  1. oh y'all are great

  2. y'all are great whoo

  3. wow

  4. what an introduction thank you

  5. what a

  6. yeah hell yeah

  7. Lindy and I were watching the movie

  8. wonder with the grandkids last night

  9. and little boy got a standing ovation

  10. it was kind of like everyone needs a standing ovation

  11. we all need a standing ovation

  12. yeah

  13. well um I

  14. I did want to introduce um

  15. you know when two become one

  16. it's a new person so I guess I

  17. I don't know if that makes you a first time visitor

  18. if you've just got married

  19. but um

  20. uh Walter and Sandy Ice

  21. would y'all stand newlyweds

  22. first time back to church

  23. so we're gonna we're gonna talk about Palm Sunday and

  24. uh

  25. and we're just going to take a laser

  26. and circle some scriptures about Jesus

  27. and Palm Sunday and the humanity of Jesus

  28. the humility of Jesus

  29. and I believe he's gonna just continue doing a work

  30. like he already is this morning

  31. so I hope you brought a Bible

  32. or a Bible app or something to take notes with

  33. we're gonna we're gonna touch on some

  34. some familiar scriptures but also some of the deepest

  35. and most rich and beautiful

  36. scriptures my favorites in the Bible

  37. so let's jump in

  38. John 1 1 is a very in fact

  39. someone's talked about John 1 here lately

  40. but John 1 1 in the beginning was the word

  41. and the word was with god

  42. and the word was god he was in the beginning with god

  43. all things were made through him

  44. and without him nothing that was made was made

  45. and in him was life and the life was the light of men

  46. and the light

  47. shines in the darkness

  48. and the darkness did not comprehend it

  49. there was a man sent from god

  50. whose name was John this man came for a witness

  51. to bear witness to the light

  52. so as you all know

  53. the the word there is talking about Jesus

  54. the word was Jesus and so when you read it

  55. in the beginning was Jesus

  56. and Jesus was with god and Jesus was god

  57. he was in the beginning with god

  58. all things were made through him

  59. and it's never said and it's never

  60. no one believes it but some

  61. I don't want there ever to creep in

  62. that god was on the throne

  63. eating bomb bombs

  64. and he sent his son to do a really hard mission

  65. no one ever says that

  66. but it helps me to know that Jesus

  67. as god came to earth

  68. and Jesus as God God crawled up on a cross

  69. to me it's more powerful

  70. it's more powerful in the way he loves us

  71. and Hebrews 1 3 and other verses in Colossians

  72. it just says

  73. Jesus was the exact representation of the father

  74. and and Jesus in John 14:19 said

    John 14:19

  75. have you been with

  76. have I been with you for so long a time

  77. and you yet you have not known me Philip

  78. the one who sent me has seen the father

  79. so if you've seen me you've seen the father

  80. and Jesus was like Philip

  81. I've been with you so long

  82. haven't you gotten that yet

  83. so Jesus is god co equal

  84. co eternal with the father and the spirit

  85. as persons of the Triune God

  86. all involved in creation

  87. so we're not polytheist worshipping more than one God

  88. God is one in three expressions

  89. it's a mystery we sing that hymn

  90. god in three persons blessed Trinity

  91. and sometimes I wonder if god didn't just have to

  92. that when we get to heaven

  93. we'll find out it's much more complex than this

  94. that it's like one of us trying to tell

  95. teach calculus to a four year old

  96. like you just have to dummy it down

  97. it's a mystery

  98. someone once said that uh

  99. if you deny the Trinity you could lose your soul

  100. but if you try to figure it out

  101. you could lose your mind

  102. it's a mystery

  103. his ways are higher than our ways

  104. we're describing a god who's inconveniently invisible

  105. and lives in a timeless zone

  106. and he makes statements that are mind boggling

  107. like

  108. he knew you

  109. you were chosen before the foundation of the world

  110. come on Steve

  111. that's right it's kind

  112. you know it's miss

  113. it's difficult yeah

  114. or you're seated with him in heavenly places right

  115. he just jumps into the timeless zone

  116. like that's easy for us to do

  117. come on that's good

  118. but I think these things for me

  119. make the way he came even more meaningful

  120. and there's a lion in us and there's a lamb in us

  121. there's a roaring lamb in you

  122. so my purpose is to open the page of the Lamb in us

  123. the Lamb in Jesus

  124. and the lion in us and the lion in Jesus

  125. so let's talk about how he was humble

  126. in different ways he was humble

  127. his humility

  128. shows up in one of my favorite chapters of the Bible

  129. Isaiah 61 we talk about this a lot here

  130. but it starts out the spirit of the Lord

  131. God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me

  132. to preach good tidings to the poor

  133. he sent me to heal the broken hearted

  134. to proclaim liberty to the captives

  135. and the opening of the prison to those who are bound

  136. so god comes on the scene as a person as a man

  137. and Jesus opening up his ministry

  138. prophesied by Isaiah 600 years earlier

  139. and he opens he goes in

  140. he opens the scroll

  141. it's his inaugural address

  142. he's reading his own mission statement

  143. and a prophecy written 600 years ago about him today

  144. I would pay a lot of money for that video

  145. I would pay a lot of money to be in the room

  146. transport me to the room

  147. I'd pay a million dollars for that

  148. how rich

  149. and I can't read that scripture without emotion

  150. and I'm not an emotional guy

  151. but the fact that god opens up his address

  152. opens up his mission statement

  153. and says I'm coming from the broken

  154. I'm coming for the hurting

  155. I'm coming for the poor I'm coming for those bound

  156. I'm coming for those in prison

  157. I'm coming for you I just can't get past

  158. who is this god

  159. who's this one we have faith in

  160. who's the god that chose us before the foundation

  161. how blessed are we I can't get past it

  162. every other faith like

  163. you just gotta climb up to some unattainable thing

  164. and our god comes to us and said I'm coming for you

  165. that's right that's right

  166. I don't know

  167. if it doesn't bring gratitude in your heart you're dead

  168. it it it

  169. this week I spoke with a man

  170. who was having to get out of his house

  171. the lease the lease was up

  172. he didn't have money for the

  173. you know it's hard to change houses

  174. like first month

  175. second month deposit

  176. like three months

  177. bills were coming his business was imploding

  178. the shame of not being able to feed your family

  179. as a man and protect that

  180. like I

  181. talk to another young man this week

  182. that got a horrible diagnosis

  183. a young girl who's filed for divorce

  184. and a missionary who says she feels alone

  185. and forgotten and betrayed

  186. the last five days

  187. this is the human condition

  188. this is real this is life

  189. and our god came and said

  190. I came for those four people

  191. I came for you I came

  192. think of the time when you felt most down

  193. most hurt most betrayed most poor

  194. and he came for us

  195. Palm Sunday is the day we remember his humility

  196. and how he came for us

  197. probably the most humbling thing he did

  198. is a term theologians called kenosis

  199. and in Philippians 2

  200. god he

  201. where god just poured out

  202. and he god gave up his divine privileges and glory

  203. to take the form of a servant and become human

  204. without ceasing to be god

  205. he walked

  206. staying god he walked

  207. he he voluntarily set aside the divine privileges

  208. to walk as a man that's right

  209. to limit self limit

  210. I'm gonna walk that's right

  211. like you and me

  212. how humbling

  213. the majestic god

  214. the king of Kings the Lord of Lords

  215. the one who sits on the throne

  216. the one with a word and the cosmos was created

  217. comes and humbles himself as one of us

  218. and opens the scroll and says

  219. I'm coming for the hurting

  220. it's too good

  221. and he didn't just come as a man he came as a baby

  222. he came totally dependent on his mama

  223. his dad

  224. came riding on a Colt on Palm Sunday

  225. I

  226. I kind of envisioned today

  227. maybe we'll do it next year

  228. but

  229. all of us having palm branches all the way down here

  230. and having John who was singing today on a cult

  231. come through'cause 'cause he kind of looks like Jesus

  232. I mean he gets the part

  233. you know I don't

  234. you don't have to be a casting guy to

  235. but that would be a great video

  236. the palm trees were a sign of victory

  237. and people were throwing their

  238. their garments their coats

  239. their jackets on the ground throwing

  240. and our king came on a humble donkey

  241. if he came today I wonder what kind of car it would be

  242. I don't wanna offend anybody

  243. this is this is a troubling moment

  244. I used to own a Pinto

  245. a brown station wagon Pinto

  246. it's as bad as it gets

  247. or by or by hatchback VW

  248. either 1 2 college cars that were very poor

  249. I pulled up to a stop sign with my wife Lindy

  250. when I was trying to impress her

  251. in my hatchback Volkswagen

  252. pulled up to the stop sign

  253. and the left wheel just fell off

  254. true story right

  255. ouch

  256. so Jesus

  257. I'm offended that Jesus was in a blue hatchback VW

  258. on Palm Sunday

  259. I want him on a black steed

  260. studly horse

  261. a stallion

  262. he was humble when he

  263. in the last supper washed the feet of the disciples

  264. he put a towel on his arm

  265. and probably a towel on his thigh

  266. and his betrayer he's washing his feet

  267. God's even though he's a man

  268. God's given him a word of knowledge

  269. that this man's gonna betray him

  270. it was a

  271. it was a role for servants or slaves in that culture

  272. they walked on with sandals and sand and dirt

  273. and animals defecated in the road

  274. and they're walking amongst all the stuff

  275. and it was a hot sweaty

  276. not a fun job most people's feet aren't that pretty

  277. anyway

  278. he's on the cross I

  279. I just envision god willingly just got on a cross

  280. lived a perfect life and got on a cross for us

  281. by the time he got there I think I'd been so fed up

  282. you know the

  283. the whole Barabbas thing that was frustrating

  284. we have this horrible criminal and Jesus

  285. the perfect one and people are saying

  286. free Barabbas free Barabbas free Barabbas

  287. pick a guy if it was today

  288. Jeffrey Epstein Jesus

  289. it's no different

  290. how humbling how humiliating

  291. Pontius Pilate the proud one

  292. he didn't even open his mouth to defend himself

  293. you ever been in an argument

  294. when you think you're really right

  295. and kept your mouth shut I didn't think so

  296. I haven't either hardly

  297. I think by the time I got on the cross

  298. was probably why god didn't have me doing it

  299. I'd have sent down the angel armies

  300. and toasted everybody by this time

  301. turn with me to Isaiah 53

  302. another fabulous scripture

  303. in verse 3 he was despised and rejected by men

  304. a man of sorrows acquainted with grief

  305. and we hid it as it were our faces from him

  306. I imagine it the scene on the cross was so rough

  307. so harsh so terrible

  308. it's kind of like when we

  309. the closest thing maybe we've seen to that

  310. is watching The Passion of the Christ

  311. you know it's a movie you don't really watch twice

  312. right

  313. it's one of those I'm glad I saw it

  314. but I'm not rushing to watch it again

  315. cause we hit our faces from it was too hard to watch

  316. Shirley has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows

  317. we have esteemed him stricken

  318. smitten by god and afflicted

  319. he was wounded for our transgressions

  320. bruised for our iniquities

  321. the chastisement for our peace was upon him

  322. he even paid the price for your peace on the cross

  323. there's no peace without the Prince of peace

  324. he purchased your peace on the cross

  325. and by his stripes we were healed

  326. we didn't just get saved on the cross

  327. he purchased our healing on the cross

  328. we like sheep

  329. have gone astray can you say amen

  330. amen we've turned everyone to our own way

  331. and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all

  332. I can't imagine the sins of all mankind

  333. from beginning to today to the future laid on him

  334. my god my god why have you forsaken me

  335. my brain doesn't comprehend

  336. I want us to feel his humility

  337. a goal of mine I wanna feel it

  338. he wasn't a victim he willingly gave himself

  339. he could have called the angel armies down any moment

  340. there's no one like him

  341. this uh

  342. theme of being a lion and a lamb

  343. I've been thinking about for weeks and weeks

  344. and then a couple of weeks ago

  345. ran across Lafe Hetland's book

  346. the heart of roaring lambs

  347. isn't that a beautiful saying

  348. roaring lambs

  349. you're a roaring lamb

  350. have you ever read something so well

  351. and you're you're saying well

  352. I'd like to just reiterate that

  353. but you can't say it as well as he wrote it

  354. and so I don't like to read things to you

  355. but I can't say it better than he wrote it

  356. so I'm gonna read a page or two to you

  357. it's really powerful

  358. occasionally we see the lion calming storms

  359. casting out demons

  360. rebuking hypocritical religious leaders

  361. preaching powerful words to multitudes

  362. or overturning the tables of money changers

  363. but mostly we see the lamb

  364. that's the nature of the kenosis

  365. the emptying the humble service

  366. that LED Jesus to the altar of sacrifice

  367. as the lamb he was laid in a manger

  368. escaped the wrath of a vicious lion

  369. who slaughtered the babies of Bethlehem

  370. fled with his family as a refugee

  371. and was raised in the humble home of a craftsman

  372. as the Lamb he grew in wisdom and stature

  373. and in favor with god and man

  374. not by asserting his rights or displaying his deity

  375. but submitting to his parents and being full of Grace

  376. as a lamb he hungered

  377. thirsted got tired

  378. felt pain and wept as a human

  379. and after he wept as a lamb

  380. he raised the dead to life

  381. as a lion

  382. he wept for Lazarus and he raised Lazarus

  383. he was a LA he was a lamb he was a lion

  384. as a lamb he put on the garments of a servant

  385. and humbly washed the dirty feet of his disciples

  386. and then he stood up and taught

  387. with the authority of a lion

  388. as a lamb he offered prayers with loud crying and tears

  389. and he sweated drops of blood one agonizing night

  390. and he stood as determined and dignified as a lion

  391. before his accusers

  392. as a lamb he chose the Father's eternal will

  393. over his own immediate desires

  394. and in embracing the Father's will

  395. he laid down his life

  396. not because anyone took it from him

  397. but because he gave it willingly

  398. and not for any other motive

  399. than the greatest love anyone can have

  400. he chose to become a grain of wheat

  401. that falls into the ground and dies

  402. in order to produce a great harvest

  403. as the lamb he was despised and rejected

  404. a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief

  405. he carried our sorrows

  406. he was wounded for our transgressions

  407. and he was LED as a lamb to the slaughter

  408. and as a lamb

  409. he cried out from the cross in his pain and humility

  410. for god to forgive his tormentors

  411. promise life to a thief provide care for his mother

  412. express his thirst and his forgiveness

  413. and declare that his work was finished

  414. and commend his spirit into the hands of his father

  415. amen

  416. out of the ugliest most painful kind of death

  417. the lamb demonstrated the beauty and power of love

  418. and revealed the heart of god

  419. and then he rose from the dead like a lion

  420. to eternal kingship and glory

  421. that's the nature of the roaring lamb

  422. and for this as the scripture says

  423. god highly exalted him

  424. and gave him the name above all names

  425. to which every knee will bow

  426. and every tongue will confess he is Lord

  427. Jesus in you says yes and amen

  428. the Holy Spirit in you says

  429. that's my god

  430. that's the Lamb

  431. in John's vision in the book of revelation

  432. the roaring lamb is worthy of all worship

  433. and seated on the throne it's the lion who prevails

  434. to open the scroll with seven seals

  435. but it's the slain lamb at the center of the throne

  436. who comes and opens it

  437. multitudes gather around the throne to worship the Lamb

  438. and declare the self salvation he accomplished

  439. the Lamb overcomes evil kings

  440. because he is Lord of Lords and king of kings

  441. he welcomes his bride

  442. to the marriage supper of the Lamb

  443. and his glory illuminates the city of god forever

  444. that's why God's lions roar with the heart of a lamb

  445. we are orphans who inherit sonship

  446. we serve in order to become great

  447. we humble ourselves to be exalted

  448. we surrender ourselves to become free

  449. we die in order to live

  450. what a great god we serve

  451. he's worthy of our passionate worship every

  452. every week every day

  453. he's so good to us

  454. you know he rode in on a donkey

  455. but when he got to the temple

  456. he turned over the tables

  457. he was a lion when he turned the tables

  458. he was a lamb riding on the donkey

  459. when he wept he was a lamb

  460. and when he raised Lazarus he was a lion

  461. when he crawled on a cross

  462. he was a lamb

  463. on Easter next Sunday

  464. he was a lion

  465. you know there have been a lot of sermons preached

  466. and I tried to figure out

  467. how many sermons have been preached

  468. in the history of the world

  469. if you Google how many churches there are

  470. it says somewhere between 4 million and 37 million

  471. what kind of answer is that

  472. like how do you get paid for that job

  473. it's like I want that job

  474. it's like the weatherman it's a 50% chance of rain

  475. like you get paid for that

  476. that's a job

  477. but if there were 10 million churches

  478. and they only preached one sermon a week

  479. for 2,000 years

  480. we've had a trillion sermons

  481. that's a lot

  482. I'm feeling really insignificant right now

  483. but the greatest sermon was the sermon on the mount

  484. and it started out with words like

  485. blessed are the poor in spirit

  486. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

  487. if you start to put on the lens of looking for

  488. the lion in the lamb

  489. it's like when my son bought a red Civic Honda

  490. all you see is red Civic Hondas

  491. you see what you're looking for

  492. and I've been looking for the lion

  493. and the lamb in the word lately

  494. and there it is blessed is poor in spirit

  495. Lamb

  496. for theirs is the kingdom

  497. they possess the kingdom of heaven that's a lion

  498. blessed are the peacemakers

  499. land they'll be called sons of god

  500. here's your lion

  501. it's everywhere

  502. but I think we're in a season just to close

  503. of

  504. one of my favorite verses is

  505. he gives Grace to the humble

  506. our movement is it

  507. has admittedly made a few mistakes

  508. and I love the way our leaders are owning it

  509. and are humble

  510. I would say there's humility flowing down right now

  511. there's a Grace

  512. and

  513. you know when Chris was here

  514. I saw another Grace gift happen in the prophetic

  515. under the ministry of a prophet

  516. which is talks about seeing

  517. I saw something I've never seen

  518. I saw something in myself that I had not seen

  519. under the ministry of a prophet

  520. that's not the kind of seeing I was used to

  521. I saw this

  522. and that was humbling wow

  523. and I was having a

  524. relational issue

  525. with a very important person in my life

  526. and in seeing and speaking with him for not very long

  527. I began to see where I was missing

  528. I saw where I was not seeing something before

  529. and I think it's fair to say

  530. that the other person had the similar experience

  531. and when we got together for breakfast

  532. we both decided to go in low

  533. we had been lions

  534. and

  535. he gives Grace to the humble

  536. Grace is the operational power of God

  537. Grace I

  538. what helps me understand Grace is

  539. I think of it as a spiritual

  540. tangible thing

  541. when you read the epistles and Paul says

  542. Grace unto you it's like he's talking about a substance

  543. a spiritual substance that when it enters the room

  544. something can happen now

  545. that could not have happened a moment ago

  546. before it came

  547. he gives Grace to the humble

  548. this verse has moved from a concept that I talk about

  549. or read or understand

  550. to faith to even a deeper place knowing

  551. like I know he gives Grace to the humble

  552. and we've been given a

  553. a pattern of humility like no other in our Lord Jesus

  554. that's right yep

  555. if he can live that way

  556. if he can humble himself that way

  557. if he can be that kind of god

  558. he can ask us to be humble and go low

  559. because I think it's the humility

  560. the Grace that comes with humility

  561. that precedes the authority that comes with a lion

  562. he was both you are both I am both

  563. but I came out of that meeting

  564. feeling about 20 pounds lighter

  565. and I literally caught myself saying

  566. I'm free I'm free I'm free

  567. he gives Grace to the humble

  568. so my invitation and ending it would be this

  569. is there any area of your life that's stuck

  570. a relationship stuck a financial thing that's stuck

  571. something in your world that's stuck

  572. it's just not moving

  573. I would say there's a Grace

  574. if you'll go lower go lower

  575. he gives Grace to the humble

  576. Grace is the operational power of god

  577. there's Grace

  578. and a wake for you to jump in and see something happen

  579. come on that's good

  580. I know it I feel it

  581. the verse has become real

  582. it's not a theory

  583. I've felt it just in the last few weeks

  584. he gives Grace to the humble

  585. so Lord we

  586. I want us to uh

  587. feel your humanity

  588. your humility

  589. I want us to be grateful for the lion and the lamb

  590. but the lamb that rode on that donkey on Palm Sunday

  591. and humbled himself

  592. and now is exalted above all the name

  593. above all names the king of Kings

  594. that humble life is now being celebrated

  595. 2,000 years later

  596. everywhere in millions of churches

  597. I don't know how many millions

  598. and the invitation is if there's something

  599. the Holy Spirit has pricked your heart and said

  600. I want you to go low lower

  601. I want you to humble yourself

  602. I want you to get through this thing

  603. I just like you to stand

  604. if the Lord is speaking to you about that some area

  605. so Holy Spirit

  606. just speak to each of us

  607. how amazing you can speak to each of us in a unique way

  608. about what humility looks like in this situation

  609. any area of my life that's not glistening

  610. is under the influence of a lie

  611. so Lord

  612. I just say speak

  613. tell us

  614. what area needs do we need to go lower

  615. we open our heart Holy Spirit

  616. we open our hearts

  617. unlock places that you have said you can't go

  618. let the oil go to crevices that aren't going there

  619. let hard hearts be softened

  620. let us be conformed to the image of Christ

  621. to go glory to glory come

  622. holy one

  623. come holy one

  624. he gives Grace to the humble

  625. so Lord

  626. let your word do its work in us

  627. we pray and all the people said amen amen

  628. thank you for your participation
