Where Do We Stand? On The Resurrection

[SPEAKER_02]: In this episode, we will commemorate Easter Sunday morning, and the way community church, we call it Resurrection's Sunday.

[SPEAKER_02]: We believed it because he got up.

[SPEAKER_02]: We can get up too.

[SPEAKER_02]: Today, we're going to be greeted by guest from the past.

[SPEAKER_02]: Matthew, also known as Levi, one of Jesus' twelfth disciples is going to lead us today, as we appreciate and celebrate the resurrection.

[SPEAKER_02]: You can follow along in the transcript of this podcast, grab your bibles, and let's study together.

[SPEAKER_02]: Has God ever told you to do something?

[SPEAKER_02]: You can use it so I understand why.

[SPEAKER_02]: This is a tough time for us.

[SPEAKER_02]: We have a narcissist.

[SPEAKER_02]: in the highest office of the empire who is unconcerned about anybody other than himself.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he's making it difficult for Christians to know how we should live and how we should be.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm talking about the emperor of the Roman Empire.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, y'all know the Emperor?

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: The Holy Spirit is just burdened me to write down the things I experience while I walk with Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I just don't know why He chose me to do it.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know why He chose now to do it.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry, I just started talking to be honest on nervous.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not really a good speaker or a good writer.

[SPEAKER_02]: But here I am speaking to here I am, writer.

[SPEAKER_02]: A more of a mathematician.

[SPEAKER_02]: My name is Levi.

[SPEAKER_02]: Some people call me Matthew.

[SPEAKER_02]: You can call me Matthew.

[SPEAKER_02]: Good morning, everybody.

[SPEAKER_02]: Good morning.

[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.

[SPEAKER_02]: I've heard so many great things about this young church.

[SPEAKER_02]: How about how committed you all are to showing people the way to life with Jesus?

[SPEAKER_02]: And it's amazing because we're just now meeting for the first time, but we have the same mission.

[SPEAKER_02]: My commitment in writing my point of view of Jesus' story is to do just that to show people that Jesus is really the king over God's kingdom.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I would like to with you to just kind of work through some of my final thoughts as I close out this writing.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm getting close to the end, but I want to just think out loud with you and I want you to help me if that's okay this morning to complete, complete my writing.

[SPEAKER_02]: I knew it was the Holy Spirit who told me to do it because not only am I not a writer, I just felt the Holy Spirit breathe on me.

[SPEAKER_02]: In the moment, it was almost like he inspired me to do it.

[SPEAKER_02]: It reminded me of pinnacles today when the Holy Spirit fell in all of us and we were speaking in tongues in this light.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were in our minds, but out of our minds, in our bodies, but out of our bodies at the same time.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I had never felt a feeling like that before.

[SPEAKER_02]: Years later, that same spirit has moved me to start writing.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I knew it was God because as soon as I sensed,

[SPEAKER_02]: that the Holy Spirit was moving me to right, he started to remind me of things that I have forgotten.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's been almost 20 years since he's events have taken place, and you know, you kind of never forget, but then something is you forget to remember.

[SPEAKER_02]: And as I started to right, it's like the more I obeyed him, the more he reminded me of key details from my time with Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: I still can't believe Jesus chose me to follow him.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not the best teacher, I'm not what I would think, rabbi material, I'm more of a mathematician, actually.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a numbers guy.

[SPEAKER_02]: So because I'm good with math, I went into the career of being a tax collector.

[SPEAKER_02]: And you can imagine, even though I'm a nice guy, I was in a mean job, so nobody liked me or my colleagues.

[SPEAKER_02]: I heard that you all got some people like that here.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think you all call them the IRS.

[SPEAKER_02]: And tax day is next week, so I just want to remind you to remember that.

[SPEAKER_02]: But I was sitting in my tax office just a normal day's work.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't realize that I made a false choice, that I was making good money, but because I was making good money, it doesn't mean it was okay to have a bad name.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't realize that I had messed up.

[SPEAKER_02]: My name to make money, and I didn't know how to fix it.

[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know how to make things, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody in the community accepted me or my colleagues.

[SPEAKER_02]: They kind of avoided us.

[SPEAKER_02]: They felt like we were sell outs, because we were taking taxes from the Jews to pay back to Caesar and to the Romans.

[SPEAKER_02]: And just when I felt like I was on the outside looking in,

[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus came walking into my tax office and it reminded me of the wisdom of Solomon.

[SPEAKER_02]: Solomon says, a good name is to be more desire than great wealth and that favor is better than silver and gold.

[SPEAKER_02]: And when Jesus came into my office that day, he gave me back a good name.

[SPEAKER_02]: My friend Luke is a physician and

[SPEAKER_02]: The Holy Spirit also led him the right to.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he wrote a little bit about my experience with Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: Today Jesus came right into my tax office.

[SPEAKER_02]: He wrote these words about my story.

[SPEAKER_02]: He says after that, he went out and looked at a tax collector named Levi.

[SPEAKER_02]: Also called Matthew sitting in the tax office.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he said to him, follow me.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he left everything behind, and got up, and began following him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And Levi gave a big reception for him in his house.

[SPEAKER_02]: And there was a large crowd of text collectors, and other people who were reclining at the table with them.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's exactly how I remember it.

[SPEAKER_02]: I remember him saying those two words.

[SPEAKER_02]: It was like a lifeline, follow me.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm good with numbers.

[SPEAKER_02]: I know opportunity calls.

[SPEAKER_02]: I knew when I was giving up, could not compare to what I was about to get.

[SPEAKER_02]: So it was easy for me to walk away from it all to follow him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And as soon as I started following him, I started showing all my friends the way to life for Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: After a big old party at the crib,

[SPEAKER_02]: We had a blast in Jesus' name.

[SPEAKER_02]: And instead of inviting all the people who were religious and righteous and who had already been down at the temple in the synagogue, I decided to invite people like me, tax collectors.

[SPEAKER_02]: Those of us who were on our side, needing to be brought back in.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I was told that you all have been in a series called Where Do We Stand.

[SPEAKER_02]: And as a young church, you're looking at where you stand or on key issues that are important to the faith.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so today, I'm here as a guest to talk about where we stand or in the resurrection.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm telling you from the outset, don't expect much from me by way of teaching or talking, but math, that's my subject.

[SPEAKER_02]: numbers.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's my strength.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so today, I just want to look at the evidence surrounding this story of Jesus and I want to make sure that it all adds up.

[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the main thing I'm thinking about as I finish my writing, hopefully.

[SPEAKER_02]: And that is this, the evidence all adds up to the fact that Jesus got up.

[SPEAKER_02]: Can you say that with me, the evidence, all adds to the fact that Jesus, here's the first piece of evidence that is very important, that is earthquakes, earthquakes.

[SPEAKER_02]: The Friday when Jesus died, there was an earthquake like we had never felt before.

[SPEAKER_02]: when the earth's shook, but what else was happening as the earth's shook?

[SPEAKER_02]: It was about three and a half to noon, and it had been pitch black dark since noon.

[SPEAKER_02]: This is the middle of the day.

[SPEAKER_02]: The time where we expected to be the brightest and the hottest and all of a sudden it was the darkest.

[SPEAKER_02]: You couldn't even see your hand in front of your face.

[SPEAKER_02]: And this darkness was a airy darkness.

[SPEAKER_02]: It was a spiritual darkness.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he stayed like that for three hours, and then all of a sudden, around three o'clock in the afternoon, the earth violently started to shake.

[SPEAKER_02]: I had a nowhere under our feet, and I'm not talking about like a minor trouble.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm talking about a real, real earthquake.

[SPEAKER_02]: Stuff was falling off the tables, doors were coming off the hinges.

[SPEAKER_02]: People were holding on to each other.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were all terrified by this earthquake.

[SPEAKER_02]: And,

[SPEAKER_02]: When the earthquake happened as around the time, looking back that Jesus died, and it's interesting, I'm told that at the foot of his cross, that earthquake and his death helped people to see that he truly was God saw him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so I want to write about it in the end of my book, and I'm thinking about saying something like this,

[SPEAKER_02]: with a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.

[SPEAKER_02]: And behold, the veil of the temple was torn into from bottom to top.

[SPEAKER_02]: No, let me exit out, top to bottom.

[SPEAKER_02]: And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.

[SPEAKER_02]: also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered the Holy City and appeared to many.

[SPEAKER_02]: and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus when they saw the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said truly this was a son of God.

[SPEAKER_02]: So that earthquake we felt that Friday night caught us all off guard.

[SPEAKER_02]: But the earthquake on Sunday morning was just as bad.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we hadn't felt the urge shaped like that and our entire lives let alone twice in the same weekend.

[SPEAKER_02]: And not just any weekend, this was Passover weekend.

[SPEAKER_02]: This was a specific time in our culture where we came together to sacrifice lands and to shed their blood as we remembered the power of the Passover.

[SPEAKER_02]: But that Friday Jesus died and a earthquake signified his death.

[SPEAKER_02]: So we just adds up to me that if there was a violent earthquake on the Friday when he died, the violent earthquake on the Sunday must mean he rose.

[SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't there to see with my own eyes, but I'll never forget how the ground shook under my feet.

[SPEAKER_02]: So I want us to do some math and we're going to start first the first part of this equation is these two earthquakes and for me, it just adds up.

[SPEAKER_02]: The second piece of evidence that I want us to look at is the stone.

[SPEAKER_02]: The truth is, we abandon Jesus at His worst possible moment.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm tempted to feel shame, but his mercy is so powerful that it redang me and my friends from how we, which is left in hangin'.

[SPEAKER_02]: The reality is, we couldn't handle the trauma of what we were experiencing.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were all so young.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know, in y'all day and time, you call them teenagers.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's what we were.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were boys, well, most of us, Peter was the oldest.

[SPEAKER_02]: He was already married.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were all single.

[SPEAKER_02]: And Peter also was paying taxes.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I know that because I'm a tax collector.

[SPEAKER_02]: I was right after him, I mean, I had just started my career, but I wasn't really old enough to grapple with what was happening in the rest of the other 10.

[SPEAKER_02]: They were practically boys.

[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't know what to do.

[SPEAKER_02]: Can you imagine watching your rabbi, your teacher, that you believed to be the one, all of a sudden, taken in chains and led out to a cross of all places and killed.

[SPEAKER_02]: So we deserted them.

[SPEAKER_02]: at his worst hour.

[SPEAKER_02]: Judas betrayed them.

[SPEAKER_02]: We all deserted them.

[SPEAKER_02]: And later on, we found out that Peter did not own.

[SPEAKER_02]: And the 10 of us, and the 9 of us, we were in a room, Judas somewhere on his own.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so was Peter.

[SPEAKER_02]: Peter we didn't see him for like a week after it all happened.

[SPEAKER_02]: and found out he went fishing again.

[SPEAKER_02]: So he just went back to what the Lord called him from.

[SPEAKER_02]: And it's something about trauma that will always tip you to go back to what the Lord called you from.

[SPEAKER_02]: John though, John held it down.

[SPEAKER_02]: John stood there at the foot of the cross until the very end.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm so glad Jesus had other followers than us because if it was up to us, he would have been left all alone.

[SPEAKER_02]: The women were there to the end, but not just them, there was another man, a man named Joseph, and I wanna add him to my story because his part is so important.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm thinking about writing it something like this.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, when it was evening,

[SPEAKER_02]: A rich man from Arimataya came named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a cleanly and cloth.

[SPEAKER_02]: and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.

[SPEAKER_02]: Joseph was the one who rolled the stone to cover the tomb.

[SPEAKER_02]: But it was the guards assigned to the tomb afterwards.

[SPEAKER_02]: That made the difference.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think you saw one of them on a video right before I came out.

[SPEAKER_02]: He was one of those guys who were assigned to the toolman.

[SPEAKER_02]: He and the others were the one who sealed this tool.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now when they put the seal on the tool, that just made our fear grow even more.

[SPEAKER_02]: We already didn't know what to do.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were in above our heads.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were mad at Judas.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were scared about Jesus.

[SPEAKER_02]: We thought wrong was going to come get us to.

[SPEAKER_02]: And then when we found out that there was a seal on the tomb, we definitely didn't want to put ourselves in the position to break the law or become an enemy of Rome.

[SPEAKER_02]: It was easy because it was the Sabbath, a Saturday, and we just used that as our religious excuse to do nothing.

[SPEAKER_02]: But the truth is, we were afraid.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were afraid of Rome.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were afraid of being crucified too.

[SPEAKER_02]: Even if we wanted to, we probably couldn't have moved that stone.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, not that we weren't strong enough, but we were so afraid that it took our strength.

[SPEAKER_02]: You've been so afraid that it made you feel physically weak.

[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think if we wanted to, we could have moved the stone.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were overtaking by terror.

[SPEAKER_02]: But the earthquake on that Sunday,

[SPEAKER_02]: I believe it moved the stone itself.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you got to think that if the first earthquake happened while he was dying and open tombs and people started walking around, then it makes sense that this second earthquake could have signified his resurrection and moved that stone, so that he could walk out of the tomb.

[SPEAKER_02]: And Jesus cried out again with the loud voice and gave up his spirit.

[SPEAKER_02]: And behold, again, the veil of the temple was torn into from top to bottom in the earth, shook in the rocks of split.

[SPEAKER_02]: Also the tombs were open.

[SPEAKER_02]: And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered the Holy City and appeared to many.

[SPEAKER_02]: So,

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to make sure this adds up.

[SPEAKER_02]: Here's my first quattcratt at an equation, all right?

[SPEAKER_02]: If E plus R S equals H D, then E square plus R S equals H G U, that makes sense to me.

[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I forgot.

[SPEAKER_02]: Y'all not good at math, aren't you?

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry, I told you math is my language.

[SPEAKER_02]: I heard y'all got something called algebra that y'all all hate, whatever.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna explain it to you.

[SPEAKER_02]: Essentially what I'm saying is, if earthquake plus rock split equals, he died then earthquake to the second power, plus low stone equals, he got it.

[SPEAKER_02]: The earthquakes, the stones, here's the last piece of it.

[SPEAKER_02]: The guards at the tomb.

[SPEAKER_02]: You see, when the Holy Spirit moved on me to start writing, he just gave me not just the ability to write, but he also reminded me of things I forgot to remember.

[SPEAKER_02]: And even though it was 20 years after the event, the Holy Spirit reminded me of these guards who were there.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's why I started to look these guys up.

[SPEAKER_02]: If somebody's guys did not want to be found, but I was able to find them because their story is the exact opposite of the story, some of the other guys were telling.

[SPEAKER_02]: And it's amazing that even after 20 years, the minute I started asking them about that Sunday morning, it's like their recollection took them back to the very day.

[SPEAKER_02]: You have experienced something so heavily that no matter how old you get, every time you talk about it, it takes you back to the moment.

[SPEAKER_02]: These men with joy in their eyes started to tell me about what happened that night and what I learned as they taught.

[SPEAKER_02]: And as they told the story is that there were some guards who went back to the chief priests and some who did it.

[SPEAKER_02]: So I got to include that in the story.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, while they were on their way, some of the men from the guard came into the city that reported to the chief priests all that had happened.

[SPEAKER_02]: So if some, so we do the math, that's we're going to divide it by two, and that's

[SPEAKER_02]: What I think is happening is half of them went back to the chief priest, which means half of them did it.

[SPEAKER_02]: What does that mean?

[SPEAKER_02]: That means that the ones who went back were brides, but the ones who did not go back were not brides.

[SPEAKER_02]: That means that the ones who were brides were fed a lot that they were supposed to feed to the streets.

[SPEAKER_02]: while the wounds who were not robbed would tell the truth about what they saw on that Sunday morning.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so when I learned about their backstory, I also learned why they were assigned to the tomb anyway.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, why did you need guards at a dead man's tomb?

[SPEAKER_02]: Here's what I learned.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, on the next day,

[SPEAKER_02]: the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, and they said, Sir, we remember that when that deceiver, that's what they call Jesus, that's not what I call it.

[SPEAKER_02]: When that deceiver, I call him deliverer.

[SPEAKER_02]: Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day.

[SPEAKER_02]: Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal him and say to the people he has risen from the day.

[SPEAKER_02]: And the last deception will be worse than the first.

[SPEAKER_02]: Pilate said to them, you have a guard, go make it as secure as you know how.

[SPEAKER_02]: And they went and made the tomb secure.

[SPEAKER_02]: with the guard, sealing the stone.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we could get mad at these guards and rightfully sold.

[SPEAKER_02]: But the truth is, they were just doing the bidding of the politician pilot who was too spine-listed to actually speak up for what was right.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I kind of grieve for them because they were sent to the tone under one idea, not knowing while they were there, they were realized their assignment was based on something that was not true.

[SPEAKER_02]: They were sent to the tone thinking they were there to protect the truth and keep us from still in the body.

[SPEAKER_02]: But while they were there, they saw the truth with their own eyes and then they had to decide

[SPEAKER_02]: You know, to truth or find you, even when you're not looking forward.

[SPEAKER_02]: So, all the guards see the same thing.

[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the guards go back to the cheap priest and they tell the cheap priest what they saw.

[SPEAKER_02]: But then the cheap priest, bribe them to change the story into a line.

[SPEAKER_02]: And here's what I've learned from all my days and dealing with money.

[SPEAKER_02]: Some claim money, and some dirty money.

[SPEAKER_02]: Because what I've learned, if you can be bribed, you will also be blamed.

[SPEAKER_02]: So never be bought.

[SPEAKER_02]: When you let yourself get bought, then you carry the blame.

[SPEAKER_02]: And the lot to me is just so,

[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I just, I can't believe they would agree to tell a lot on themselves.

[SPEAKER_02]: The lie they were supposed to tell is that they failed on the job by going asleep at the tomb of public enemy number one.

[SPEAKER_02]: And if they fell asleep at the tomb and pilot found out, he would shift the blame and could kill them for doing a bad job.

[SPEAKER_02]: Even though he was a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a

[SPEAKER_02]: You pilot whose wife had more Holy Spirit than him.

[SPEAKER_02]: And she had a dream that told her about the true nature of Jesus and the leave is man alone.

[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes to tell pilot, I had a dream about this man.

[SPEAKER_02]: Don't you have a hand in what potentially going to happen to him?

[SPEAKER_02]: And pilot instead of speaking up, he just washed his hands of the matter by giving the crowd the choice that he should have made.

[SPEAKER_02]: One Jesus named Barabas, the other Jesus, who is the Christ.

[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus of Nazareth, the annoying tip one.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he told the crowd to choose which one they wanted to go free and which one they wanted to crucify.

[SPEAKER_02]: And the crowd chose to free and insurrectionists.

[SPEAKER_02]: This man stormed the capital and went away free.

[SPEAKER_02]: You're not supposed to be able to do that.

[SPEAKER_02]: You're not supposed to be able to lead a mutiny.

[SPEAKER_02]: And then be absolved of all charges.

[SPEAKER_02]: But Barabas went free.

[SPEAKER_02]: In Jesus, a righteous man, a innocent man.

[SPEAKER_02]: He gave his life.

[SPEAKER_02]: And as bad as that is, as injustice as that is, to truth is, every time one of us gets saved, this is actually what happens.

[SPEAKER_02]: We trade those who are guilty for the weren't who's not.

[SPEAKER_02]: And he willingly goes to the cross.

[SPEAKER_02]: Can't you see the melanative Messiah standing there with locks in his hair?

[SPEAKER_02]: Tears in his eyes.

[SPEAKER_02]: knowing he has to do this, even though he don't want to.

[SPEAKER_02]: I like the way you all depict to him, it's all church.

[SPEAKER_02]: That's more like how he looked.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: As soon as I got here, before I could even come to the church, share my little finish at the end of my book with you, I saw all these pictures of me and Jesus ended the cypress, and I'm trying to figure out, who is that?

[SPEAKER_02]: And what have they done with the real Jesus?

[SPEAKER_02]: Then I get here, and y'all got somebody who's closer to how he looked.

[SPEAKER_02]: And not only did they have the real Jesus wrong to have us wrong.

[SPEAKER_02]: They got us all his old men with gray hair and no disrespect to the age.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I honor my eldest.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just saying we were boys.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were pupils.

[SPEAKER_02]: We were just students.
