  1. Welcome to ECB's weekly sermon podcast. ECB is

  2. an international church in Bangkok, Thailand,

  3. with dozens of nationalities worshipping together.

  4. We invite you to connect with us from wherever

  5. you are through our website ecb .asia or our

  6. mobile app. And now we pray that you are blessed

  7. by this week's sermon. Living life with the Holy

  8. Spirit. It's at the core of following Jesus because

  9. the Bible says that the moment you gave your

  10. life to Christ, you heard the gospel and you

  11. believed in Christ, at that moment the Holy Spirit

  12. came to live in you. And now that the Holy Spirit

  13. is in you, it's going to stay there until the

  14. end. He's not going to get tired of you. No,

  15. he loves you too much. He wants you to experience

  16. the love of God in you. And therefore, when the

  17. Holy Spirit comes to live in you, we learn the

  18. last time that is the love of God being poured

  19. into your heart. And this reality now of experiencing

  20. the love of God through the Holy Spirit in our

  21. lives has an effect that is captured in the words

  22. of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians. And he's

  23. going to start describing this experience as

  24. the compelling presence of God in our lives.

  25. So I'm going to ask you to read 2 Corinthians

  26. with me together. We will read verse 14 and 15.

  27. Christ's love compels us because we are convinced

  28. that one died for all and therefore all died.

  29. And he died for all. That those who live. Should

  30. no longer live for themselves. But for him who

  31. died for them. And was raised again. These people

  32. that have encountered the love of God. Now feel

  33. compelled. To now live. For the one. Who actually

  34. saved us. And these were to be compelled. means

  35. that now there is this internal motivation, this

  36. internal desire that propels you to engage in

  37. certain things and to do certain things that

  38. otherwise you wouldn't have done. But this love

  39. of God is now in you and the Holy Spirit is going

  40. to guide you throughout your life in certain

  41. situations in which you will realize that He

  42. is propelling you. To act. And that in itself.

  43. Means that following Jesus. Resembles not so

  44. much a power bank. But a power grid. Because

  45. with the power bank. It's all about me getting

  46. all the power. So I can accumulate all the power.

  47. And have it when I need it. And many Christians

  48. live like that. Especially if you have been shaped

  49. by prosperity theology mindset. It's all about

  50. God. Give me, give me, give me, give me, give

  51. me, give me, give me, so I can have more and

  52. more and more and more. And when you don't give

  53. me, I get upset and I quit. That's a power bank

  54. Christian. The power of a great Christian is

  55. very different. I receive God's love so that

  56. His love will flow through me. And impact the

  57. lives of others. That is the compelling nature

  58. of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants to

  59. flow through you into the lives of others. And

  60. that's why Paul says the love of Christ compels

  61. us now not to live for ourselves. But to live

  62. for Him who died and resurrected for us. And

  63. that. of being compelled by the Holy Spirit is

  64. going to happen in the book of Acts. And there's

  65. going to be three experiences that they are all

  66. linked to the same location, the same city. And

  67. I want us to take a look at those three experiences

  68. in that location because it reveals something

  69. about how is it for us Christians to follow Jesus.

  70. And as we look at those experiences, I want you

  71. to ask yourself, is there something that is holding

  72. you back from pursuing God wholeheartedly? Because

  73. chances are that as we look at these three experiences,

  74. they may turn into a mirror that you're looking

  75. at yourself. What are these experiences? And

  76. where do they begin? Let me start by giving you

  77. a little bit of the background. Remember that

  78. during Pentecost Sunday, we studied how the gospel

  79. was preached by the apostle Peter for the first

  80. time in what city? Jerusalem. And how many people

  81. came to know Christ? 3 ,000. And it was the first

  82. time the gospel was preached ever in human history.

  83. And God had given Peter, The responsibility as

  84. he told him, I'm giving you the keys of the kingdom.

  85. He was the first one to preach the gospel. But

  86. that audience was very unique. These were the

  87. Jews that had come to Jerusalem. But what about

  88. the Gentiles? They haven't heard the gospel yet.

  89. Well, God knows that. And he's going to use Peter

  90. to preach the gospel for the first time to Gentiles.

  91. Well, Peter was in Jerusalem for all the events

  92. that happened, the death of Christ, the resurrection,

  93. then the 3 ,000 people that came to know Christ.

  94. He was tired. He needed a break. So he is going

  95. to move just a short break to Joppa, a small

  96. town in the beach. It's like when you are tired

  97. of... The traffic in Bangkok and all the tourists

  98. and all the crowds. And you say, I'm just going

  99. to go to Cham or Hua Hin or something. I just

  100. want a few days in the beach. And that's what

  101. Peter is doing. He's taking a break. And he's

  102. at a friend's house. He's waiting for lunch.

  103. And the Holy Spirit is going to encounter him

  104. in that place. To reveal something that he wants

  105. to do in a city called Caesarea Maritima. which

  106. is in the north. And that city is the focus of

  107. our study today. Let me tell you about it. If

  108. you hear the word Caesarea, what does it sound

  109. like? Caesar, right? Because it was a city that

  110. was established, created by Herod the Great to

  111. honor the Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus. And

  112. not only to honor the emperor, but to worship

  113. the emperor. And this city was in the coast.

  114. It was a port. They had built a special harbor

  115. with special technology to be able to facilitate

  116. economic transport in that area. If you have

  117. traveled internationally, and you have visited

  118. different Chinatowns, You know how they look

  119. alike? It's a little bit of China in these different

  120. places. But the same thing with this city. This

  121. was Roma town. This was the architecture of Rome,

  122. the worship of Rome, all of these different things.

  123. And there was a military base for Rome to the

  124. entire Judea area. It also had the temple of

  125. the king. And in that place, you can go today

  126. to Caesarea and you will see all the ruins of

  127. this place. All of this is rich in archaeology.

  128. And we are told that at the very opening of the

  129. harbor, there was a big temple with a big statue

  130. of the worship of... Emperor Caesar Augustus.

  131. And not only that, we also know by this pilot

  132. stone that there was another temple dedicated

  133. to Emperor Tiberius. So you can start picturing

  134. that this city is a little piece of Rome surrounded

  135. by all this pagan worship, military presence.

  136. And it's in this place that now God is going

  137. to send Peter And there's a military man who

  138. is a guy who is in authority over like a hundred

  139. soldiers or so. And in this position, he has

  140. authority, he's very well connected, and now

  141. God is going to do something in his life, being

  142. the first Roman now to come to know Christ. So

  143. that takes us to Acts chapter 10, and this is

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  144. how it starts. At Caesarea, now you can picture

  145. the city, there was a man named Cornelius, a

  146. centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

  147. He and all his family were devout and got fearing.

  148. He gave generously to those in need and prayed

  149. to God regularly. In the Jewish doctrines and

  150. teachings. And he was trying to follow this God.

  151. Even though he himself was not a Jew. One day.

  152. At about three in the afternoon. He had a vision.

  153. He distinctly saw an angel of God. Who came to

  154. him and said. Cornelius. Cornelius stared at

  155. him in fear. What is it Lord? He asked. And the

  156. angel answered. Your prayers and gifts to the

  157. poor have come up. As a memorial offering before

  158. God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man

  159. named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying

  160. with Simon the Tanner whose house is by the sea.

  161. And now you can picture right there Peter in

  162. Joppa. So Cornelius sends this guy to Joppa.

  163. And they arrive right at the moment when Peter

  164. has been waiting for lunch. And we are told that

  165. Peter is there getting hungry, and he has an

  166. experience with the Holy Spirit. Peter went up

  167. on the roof to pray, and he became hungry and

  168. wanted something to eat. And while the meal was

  169. being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw

  170. a vision, and it was the most awkward vision.

  171. It was these animals that were coming down, and

  172. a voice was saying, kill and eat. And all these

  173. animals were animals that in the Jewish teaching

  174. were animals that were considered unclean. You

  175. could not eat those. So I was like, what? And

  176. the thing happened one time, and then a second

  177. time, and then a third time. And the voice in

  178. the vision said to him, do not call anything

  179. impure that God has made clean. I was like, what

  180. is that supposed to mean? So the vision ended,

  181. and he's there thinking, what in the world just

  182. happened? And at that moment, while Peter was

  183. still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said

  184. to him, Simon, three men are looking for you,

  185. so get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate

  186. to go with them, for I have sent them. The Holy

  187. Spirit knew Peter very well. You see, Peter grew

  188. up as a Jew being told, avoid Gentiles at all

  189. costs. You never go into their cities. Never

  190. befriend them. God forbids that you ever enter

  191. their homes. Don't do any business with them.

  192. Avoid those people because those people are pagan.

  193. They worship idols. They are unclean. And if

  194. you associate with them, you become ceremonially

  195. unclean. So avoid those people. And now, God

  196. is sending these Gentiles from Caesarea, the

  197. very city with all these temples that worship

  198. Roman emperors, to meet a Roman soldier that

  199. is in charge of all these soldiers. It's like

  200. the worst place for Peter to ever go. So the

  201. Holy Spirit has to tell him, hey, these guys

  202. are going to appear. Go with them. Don't resist.

  203. I'm doing something here. So Peter goes with

  204. them. It's like about a month, I mean a day and

  205. a half or so of traveling distance. He gets there

  206. to Caesarea. He goes into the house of these

  207. Cornelius and he tells them, hey guys, I'm a

  208. Jew. You know that it's against my law to enter

  209. into your home. He's feeling so uncomfortable

  210. all throughout the whole experience. Until finally

  211. he realizes, oh, they want to hear the gospel.

  212. So he starts sharing the gospel with the Gentiles.

  213. And this is the first time that the gospel is

  214. shared. So let's read what Peter said. Then Peter

  215. began to speak. I now realize how true it is

  216. that God does not show favoritism. But accepts

  217. from every nation the one who fears him. And

  218. does what he writes. It never crossed my mind

  219. before. You know the message God sent to the

  220. people of Israel. Announcing the good news of

  221. peace. Through Jesus Christ who is Lord of all.

  222. Wait, wait, wait. Can you say that a little bit

  223. more quietly? Because in this city we believe

  224. that Caesar Augustus is Lord of all. So you are

  225. telling me that this Jesus is actually Lord of

  226. all? You can get killed for that. Yes. This Jesus

  227. is Lord of all. And you know what has happened

  228. throughout the province of Judea beginning in

  229. Galilee after the baptism of John that John preached.

  230. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy

  231. Spirit and power. And how he went around doing

  232. good and healing all who were under the power

  233. of the devil. Because God was with him. We are

  234. witnesses of everything he did in the country

  235. of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him

  236. by hanging him on a cross. But God raised him

  237. from the dead on the third day and cast him to

  238. be seen. He was not seen by all the people. but

  239. by witnesses whom God had already chosen by us,

  240. who ate and drank with him after he rose from

  241. the dead. Which, by the way, this is one of those

  242. hints again, that Jesus' resurrection was physical.

  243. He ate and drank with the apostles. He commanded

  244. us to preach to the people and to testify that

  245. he is the one whom God appointed as judge of

  246. the living and the dead. All the prophets testify

  247. about him. That everyone who believes in him

  248. receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

  249. And now he gets to the core of the message. He's

  250. telling them, look, Jesus was the promised Messiah.

  251. He died, he resurrected to pay for our sins.

  252. And now he can forgive anyone that comes to him.

  253. And as this audience of Romans are listening

  254. to Peter. This message rings true to their hearts.

  255. They start believing every word Peter is saying.

  256. And as that is happening, while Peter was still

  257. speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on

  258. all who heard the message. And not only came

  259. to them because they believed in Christ, but

  260. something else happened. The circumcised believers

  261. who had come with Peter, meaning the other Jews

  262. that were with Peter, that were also followers

  263. of Jesus, were astonished that the gift of the

  264. Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.

  265. How did they know? Oh, for they heard them speaking

  266. in tongues and praising God, just like it had

  267. happened a few days before at Pentecost. Same

  268. experience, not the same people. That means that

  269. you are one of us. Then Peter said, surely no

  270. one can stand in the way of their being baptized

  271. with water. They have received the Holy Spirit

  272. just as we have. So imagine these guys. They

  273. are going through all of these things that God

  274. is doing. And everything that God is doing is

  275. completely against everything that they had assumed.

  276. That Jesus was just for the Jews. And that these

  277. Gentiles could not ever. Really follow Jesus.

  278. And now they're experiencing the same salvation.

  279. And now they get baptized. So he ordered that

  280. they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

  281. And then they asked Peter to stay with them for

  282. a few days. The story begins Peter being very

  283. uncomfortable. I'm not sure I should be here.

  284. It's against my law to enter your home. To now.

  285. Hey, we're going to spend three days together.

  286. We know that the regiment in this area was in

  287. a very specific location close to the palace

  288. of Herod. And in church tradition, what happened

  289. is that in the late 300s, 400s, many of these

  290. important places became places where churches

  291. were built. And according to one of the church

  292. fathers, his name is Jerome, he tells us that

  293. right there in the house of Cornelius, the first

  294. Christians in that city, a church, Christian

  295. church was built. And we have the ruins of that

  296. church today. So if the archaeology is right,

  297. And that church was built on Cornelius' house.

  298. That means that you can go there and stand on

  299. the very same place where the first Gentiles

  300. heard the gospel. A city that had been designed

  301. with the purpose of telling the world that Caesar

  302. is Lord. It's the city that now God is encountering

  303. the Romans to tell them actually Jesus is Lord.

  304. And even though they are surrounded by all these

  305. temples built by human hand, now God is starting

  306. this temple of the Holy Spirit in the lives of

  307. these people. And he's starting something completely

  308. new, powerful, that will help. for generations

  309. to come. But Peter does not know that. He did

  310. not know that. The only thing that he knew is

  311. that the Holy Spirit was calling him and compelling

  312. him to go beyond his comfort zone. And the Holy

  313. Spirit is not going to just ask Peter to go beyond

  314. his comfort zone. He's going to ask you to go

  315. beyond your comfort zone. Time after time. And

  316. every time the Holy Spirit wants you to move

  317. beyond your comfort zone, you are going to feel

  318. the resistance of saying, well, me? But no, I'm

  319. not sure. And then all that thinking will start

  320. taking place. Are you willing to live life with

  321. the Holy Spirit? Then you have to be willing.

  322. To follow beyond your comfort zone. And as you

  323. do, you have no idea what God can do with you.

  324. I remembered the first time I started pastoring

  325. the church in Dallas and the first time I had

  326. to preach. That was the first time ever for me

  327. to preach a sermon in English. Because I was

  328. born in Santiago in Chile, South America, Spanish

  329. was my native language. And I studied English,

  330. you know, since I was in kinder all the way through

  331. high school, but you don't study it to actually

  332. speak. And then when I went to the U .S., I was

  333. 18. And when I was doing my master's degree,

  334. that's the first time I started functioning in

  335. English. I remember all those papers I had to

  336. write were so hard because everything was in

  337. English, you know, and reading, no problem, but

  338. writing and speaking, that was really hard. And

  339. I remember that I had some friends that would

  340. correct my papers, you know, all these notes,

  341. everything. I learned so much at the beginning.

  342. I was fearful to say certain words. There was

  343. a word I always avoid saying, cheat. I would

  344. say the word piece of paper instead. Because

  345. I was afraid of saying the wrong word, if you

  346. understand what I mean. Talking about comfort

  347. zone. And here I am. Never imagine. What can

  348. God do through us? If instead of saying, no,

  349. God, me, no, no, please, no, I don't like that.

  350. What if instead we were to say, God, is this

  351. you? I'm not sure I like this idea, but as long

  352. as this is you, I'm okay. But please, let it

  353. be you. Don't let your comfort zone hold you

  354. back from experiencing life with the Holy Spirit.

  355. There's another thing that's happening at Caesarea.

  356. And it's going to involve Herod, the king. Now

  357. Herod is a very interesting family because you

  358. find the name Herod all throughout the New Testament.

  359. And we say, oh Herod, Herod, but it's not the

  360. same person. It was a family. Herod the Great.

  361. He's the one that tried to kill Jesus. Then Herod

  362. Antipas, the son. He's the one that decapitates

  363. John the Baptist. And now we're going to encounter

  364. the son of that guy who is Herod Agrippa I. And

  365. you will see that the family line has something

  366. in common. Look at what the Bible says. About

  367. that time, King Herod Agrippa began to persecute

  368. some believers in the church. Also antagonizing

  369. what God was doing. He killed the first apostle,

  370. James, the brother of John. And he sent Peter

  371. to prison. This Herod. But Peter escapes because

  372. of the miraculous intervention of the angel.

  373. And now after that, Herod decides to leave Jerusalem

  374. and he's going to go to another city. You want

  375. to guess which city did he go to? Caesarea. Because

  376. that's where the palace was. Afterward, Herod

  377. left Judea to stay in Caesarea for a while. So

  378. now he's in Caesarea. This was a family that

  379. wanted to have the favor of Rome. They wanted

  380. the allegiance of people. They wanted to be on

  381. top at all costs. And now that Herod arrives,

  382. he's in Caesarea. all these things going on with

  383. some of the cities in the surrounding area, they

  384. send a delegation to have a meeting with him

  385. because they need his help with certain things.

  386. So they set a meeting, and now we are told that

  387. when the day arrived, Herod put on his royal

  388. robes, sat on his throne, and then he made a

  389. speech. To this audience of people that are seeking

  390. his help. And something happens. The people gave

  391. him a great ovation. Herod. Herod. It's the voice

  392. of a God. Not a man. Great ovation. All of them.

  393. And Herod is there like. And he believed it.

  394. I'm not just a man. I'm God. In this city, we

  395. worship the Roman emperors. It is time you start

  396. worshiping me. But it didn't last long. Instantly,

  397. an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness

  398. because he accepted the people's worship instead

  399. of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed

  400. with worms and died. Abruptly. It's like, Herod,

  401. you're not a Roman, even though you would like

  402. to be. You're a Jew. And there's only one Jew

  403. that is Lord of all, that deserves the worship,

  404. and that is Jesus, not you. And this guy that

  405. has been persecuting Christians, killing these

  406. Christians, now gets judged by God. And actually,

  407. the Bible is not the only place that mentions

  408. this. There's a Jewish historian that wrote the

  409. early history of the Jews. His name is Flavius

  410. Josephus. And in one of his books called The

  411. Antiquities of the Jews, he mentions what happened

  412. to Herod. A severe pain also arose in his belly

  413. and he began in a most violent manner. Sudden.

  414. And he also shares how he died. And this persecution

  415. against Christians in Caesarea continued throughout

  416. the Roman emperors. There's a time in the 200s

  417. where one of these Roman emperors, his name was

  418. Valerian, I think I remember. And we are told,

  419. In another book written by Eusebius, who was

  420. a Christian that writes about the history of

  421. the church. And he mentions some of these Christians

  422. that died. Three of these friends, Priscus, Malchus,

  423. and Alexander. All these three guys, they were

  424. killed by the beasts in this Roman. Spectacle.

  425. Right there in Caesarea. Next to Herod's palace.

  426. And also we have Marians. Let me see how is that.

  427. Marians. And he is decapitated. And his story

  428. was very sad. Because this was a Roman guy. Just

  429. like Cornelius. Cornelius was a centurion. A

  430. very high rank. This guy was supposed to become

  431. a centurion. And he's applying for the job. He

  432. gets qualified for it. And before he can get

  433. the job, there's another guy that wants a job.

  434. Another Roman. And he says, hey, but that guy

  435. is a Christian. So they start the investigation.

  436. And it's like, yeah, this guy is a Christian.

  437. So you have to declare that Caesar is Lord. And

  438. he can't. He says, no, Jesus is Lord. So they

  439. kill him. By decapitation. This is what these

  440. guys had to suffer in order to follow Jesus.

  441. So imagine, there's a king that is trying to

  442. oppose Christianity and killing Christians. There's

  443. an emperor that is killing Christians. And on

  444. top of that, you are in a city that is trying

  445. to proclaim the worship of the Roman emperors.

  446. What do you think will happen with the church

  447. in that place? It will die? Actually, you don't

  448. even have to imagine what would happen because

  449. the text tells us. Meanwhile, the word of God

  450. continued to spread and there were many believers.

  451. Why did the church in Caesarea remain alive,

  452. didn't die? It's because there was a group of

  453. Christians indwelled by the Holy Spirit, learning

  454. to live life with the Holy Spirit, who were being

  455. compelled by the love of God to have a power

  456. grid type of Christianity. And they kept impacting

  457. the lives of others, even if it cost their lives.

  458. And that is how the Holy Spirit leads. is going

  459. to compel you beyond safety. And there are times

  460. in which your allegiance to safety is going to

  461. be higher than your allegiance to the Holy Spirit.

  462. And that is going to be a problem. Because when

  463. the Holy Spirit compels, you go. And if safety

  464. holds you back from pursuing what the Holy Spirit

  465. is telling you to do, then you have to decide

  466. what you're going to do. And I know the answer

  467. is not easy. Because there's nothing wrong in

  468. wanting to have safety. But the problem is that

  469. God did not save you to be safe. He saved you

  470. to be impactful. And sometimes that will require

  471. that you risk it for the Lord. When I was a teenager,

  472. I went to Paraguay. And it was a special program,

  473. a special event that the youth had organized,

  474. and there was a couple of Christians that were

  475. serving in an area of the country that was known

  476. to be very dangerous. So at the end of the presentation,

  477. we had a time of Q &A, and one of the guys asked,

  478. how do you reconcile serving God and putting

  479. your family at risk, going to a place that is

  480. dangerous, because they had children? And I remember

  481. the guy passing and reflecting. He says, we've

  482. wrestled with that. But what we have concluded

  483. is that our lives are in God's hands. He has

  484. control over our lives. And he knows when he's

  485. going to call us into his presence. If he wants

  486. me to die here, I'll die here right now. So safety

  487. is not a place. Safety is a person. And therefore,

  488. God. It's my safety. If he wants me to die, he

  489. calls me to his presence. He will do it anytime.

  490. So if we go to work in this place that is dangerous,

  491. if God doesn't want us to go to his presence

  492. yet, we won't. But if he wants to call us to

  493. his presence, he will. So they submitted that

  494. fear to the Lord and that desire for safety as

  495. if that is what we are living for. To the Lord.

  496. And in that process they discovered. That their

  497. safety was in Christ. All along. And any other

  498. form of safety. Is but a mirage. Is safety. And

  499. your desire for safety. Holding you back. from

  500. pursuing what God is calling you to do. You will

  501. have to make a choice. And I'm here to tell you,

  502. there's no better choice than to be compelled

  503. by the love of Christ and act on it. And that's

  504. what happened with Herod. But now the story continues

  505. and there's a third experience that the Holy

  506. Spirit is going to do right there in Caesarea.

  507. And this one involves the Apostle Paul. Paul,

  508. as you know, he persecuted Christians. Jesus

  509. appears to him. He becomes a follower of Jesus.

  510. And now he's called by Jesus to be an apostle

  511. to the Gentiles. He goes and travels throughout

  512. many years, preaching Christ throughout the Roman

  513. Empire. Churches are... Christian communities

  514. are established. It cost him so much. But at

  515. the end of his third missionary journey, Paul

  516. goes back to Judea. He arrives there to the coast

  517. town. He stays in the house of Philip, the evangelist,

  518. for a day or so. And then he goes finally to

  519. Jerusalem. And as he is in Jerusalem, He's going

  520. to be worshiping the Lord there, and there's

  521. this commotion that happens. He's opposed by

  522. the Jewish authorities. He's sent to prison.

  523. There's a plot to kill him because he's a Roman

  524. citizen himself. When the Romans learn that there's

  525. a plot to kill him, they have to take him out

  526. of Jerusalem, and they're going to take him to

  527. another city. You want to guess what that city

  528. was? Caesarea. And now Paul is going to arrive

  529. with the cavalry and all his soldiers to Caesarea.

  530. And it tells us when the cavalry arrived, when

  531. the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered

  532. the letter to the governor and handed Paul over

  533. to him. Then he ordered that Paul be kept under

  534. guard. Where? In Herod's palace. Wow. This was

  535. the palace built by the herd that tried to kill

  536. Jesus. And that guy is dead. And Jesus is alive.

  537. And now Paul is there because of Jesus. So it

  538. happens that he is there. waiting for trial,

  539. you know, the justice system all go through,

  540. but there's corruption. So the governor that

  541. is there, his name is Felix, he keeps Paul there.

  542. He's talking about things here and there. He

  543. calls him another day, and Paul shares the gospel

  544. with him, but he's not interested. What he's

  545. interested in is money. By the way, we say money

  546. like this in Mexico. They say money like this.

  547. That's a cultural difference I learned. I don't

  548. know how they do it in your country. Money. Money.

  549. He was waiting for Paul to pay him a bribe to

  550. let him go. But Paul never did. Two years passed.

  551. And Paul is there still at Herod's palace. And

  552. now there's a new governor that comes. His name

  553. is Festus. And now that Festus is the new governor,

  554. he hears this guy and he's curious about this

  555. pole, you know. He learns about it. And one day,

  556. Festus, the governor, hears that King Herod and

  557. his wife are coming to congratulate him for his

  558. new position. So they're going to come and visit

  559. him at the palace. So they arrived. And they

  560. are talking and in the conversation, Phistos

  561. says to King Herod Agrippa II, hey, you know,

  562. I have this guy here. He's been here, you know,

  563. like more than two years or so. He has a very

  564. interesting story. Maybe you might enjoy listening

  565. to him. And the guy says, yeah, that sounds interesting.

  566. I think I would like to listen to that guy. So

  567. we are told that they are meeting right there

  568. in Herod's palace. By the way, As you see this

  569. picture, we have the ruins of that palace, which

  570. means that you can go to Caesarea Maritima today,

  571. and you can stand in the very place where Paul

  572. is having this conversation that we are about

  573. to read. The next day, Agrippa and Bernice came

  574. with great pomp, entered the audience room with

  575. the high -ranking military officers, And the

  576. prominent men of the city, and at the command

  577. of Festus, Paul was brought in. So I want you

  578. to picture the room. The king, the wife, all

  579. the officials, everybody there. And Paul shows

  580. up. What? King Herod? your father is the one

  581. that killed James and sent Peter to prison. Your

  582. grandfather is the one that killed John the Baptist.

  583. Your great -grandfather is the one that tried

  584. to kill Jesus. And now I'm before this guy and

  585. all these Romans that worship the emperors. And

  586. now I'm here. How would you feel? They can kill

  587. you just like this. Watch out what you say. And

  588. then Agrippa said to Paul, you have permission

  589. to speak for yourself. So Paul motioned with

  590. his hand and began his defense. King Agrippa,

  591. I consider myself fortunate to stand before you

  592. today as I make my defense against all the accusations

  593. of the Jews. And especially so because you are

  594. well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and

  595. controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen

  596. to me patiently. And he's going to start telling

  597. him this whole testimony. I persecuted the church.

  598. Jesus appeared to me. I started preaching the

  599. gospel. This Jesus is real. He wants to say he

  600. forgives sins. He's telling him the whole thing.

  601. And he has the captive audience right there listening

  602. to him. And he says, but God has held me to this

  603. very day. So I stand here and testify to small

  604. and great alike. I'm saying nothing beyond what

  605. the prophets of Moses said would happen. That

  606. the Messiah would suffer. And as the first to

  607. rise from the dead. Would bring the message of

  608. light to his own people. And to the Gentiles.

  609. He preaches the gospel like. The only thing that

  610. remains is. Who wants to accept Christ? Raise

  611. your hand. You know. It's like he shared the

  612. gospel in detail. And at that moment. Festus

  613. interrupts Paul. And says, Paul, enough. You're

  614. out of your mind. Your great learning is driving

  615. you insane. What would you do? Would you go like,

  616. oh, sorry. Not when the Holy Spirit is compelling

  617. you. I'm not insane. Most excellent festus. Paul

  618. replied. What I'm saying is actually true and

  619. also reasonable. And no offense, but let me turn

  620. back to the king. The king is familiar with these

  621. things and I can speak freely to him. I'm convinced

  622. that none of this has escaped his notice because

  623. it was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, do

  624. you believe the prophets? I know you do. And

  625. then Agrippa said to Paul, okay, do you really

  626. think? That in such a short time, you can persuade

  627. me to be a Christian? Oops, what will you do?

  628. Sorry. Not when the Holy Spirit is compelling

  629. you. King, short time or long time? I pray to

  630. God that not only you, But all of you who are

  631. listening here may become what I am except for

  632. this change. I can't believe you just said that

  633. to the king. You know that he can kill you. Yes.

  634. The king rose and with him the governor and Bernice

  635. and those sitting with them and they left the

  636. room saying, This guy didn't sound crazy. He

  637. didn't have to stay in prison. He can be set

  638. free. And Paul will end up going to Rome and

  639. eventually he dies at the hands of the Romans.

  640. And here we see the Holy Spirit placing him in

  641. a platform and an audience that only the Holy

  642. Spirit could have arranged. The great grandson

  643. Of Herod who tried to kill Jesus. Has a captive.

  644. Now. Place to hear the gospel fully. We do not

  645. know what the gospel did in his heart. But he

  646. heard it. By God's grace. He's going to compel

  647. you. To go beyond all fear. And when you are

  648. in that place of fear. You have to remember what

  649. Jesus told the apostles. The Holy Spirit will

  650. teach you what to say. So do not worry because

  651. it's not going to be you speaking. It's going

  652. to be the Holy Spirit speaking through you. And

  653. sometimes God is going to position you in a place

  654. to have a conversation that you know God is prompting

  655. you. And you're going to be afraid. God is going

  656. to give you platforms of people that are very

  657. influential and the very fact that they are so

  658. influential is going to make you feel intimidated

  659. whether you should say something or not. But

  660. in all of those moments, remember that if you

  661. are following Jesus, it is the Holy Spirit that

  662. has placed you in that moment, in that conversation,

  663. in that platform. And rather than being afraid

  664. and letting fear hold you back, you need to pray

  665. at that moment and say, Holy Spirit, you better

  666. walk. hear with me and speak through me because

  667. I have no idea how to approach this but I'm going

  668. to trust in you and you go in Jesus name would

  669. you let fear hold you back or would you let the

  670. Holy Spirit propel you forward and these are

  671. the experiences that we see in Caesarea now you

  672. will never read the Bible and see that city The

  673. same way again. The city created to exalt the

  674. emperor as Lord became the city that exalted

  675. Jesus as Lord of all. By the power of the Spirit.

  676. That's why Paul writes later, the love of God

  677. in us compels us. It calls us not to be living

  678. a Christian life Like a power bank. But it's

  679. a power grid. And what God can do. And places

  680. he can reach through you. Are unimaginable. You

  681. have no idea. Just trust him. Because. Read with

  682. me one more time. He died for all. That those

  683. who live. Should no longer live for themselves.

  684. But for him who died for them. And was raised

  685. again. That is what we live for. Not for comfort.

  686. Or safety. We live for Jesus. And his plan. His

  687. time. His purpose. So let me conclude the study

  688. with this question. What is holding you back.

  689. From following Jesus wholeheartedly. And serving

  690. him. Well. Is it the comfort zone that you're

  691. attached to? Is it the safety that you're attached

  692. to? Is it fear that you're attached to? Whatever

  693. it is, may you accept the invitation to come

  694. to the Lord today and say, Lord, I'm going to

  695. follow you no matter what. Because you are Lord

  696. of all. Victorious Jesus will live for you. Lord,

  697. it's easy to forget. That there are generations

  698. of Christians before us that overcame so much

  699. so that the gospel will be proclaimed and it

  700. reached us this far. Thank you for their faithfulness,

  701. for their willingness to go beyond all of these

  702. things and risk so much. Would you help us be

  703. that kind of Christian? Let your power and your

  704. grace and your love flow through us to accomplish

  705. the things that you have. And I ask in Jesus'

  706. name and by the power of the Spirit that any

  707. chain that is holding us back be broken right

  708. now in Jesus' name and that you will unleash

  709. us for greater kingdom impact because that is

  710. what you envision. In the name of Jesus, we pray.

  711. Amen. you will find giving options on our website.

  712. And remember to join us next week. God bless

  713. you.
