  6. joining with us each Sunday morning at 10am in

  7. the heart of Midtown Harrisburg. You can find

  8. us online at SecondCityChurch .org and on Facebook,

  9. Instagram and YouTube. We hope you enjoy this

  10. sermon. God Bless. How do we think of these words

  11. in the first Thessalonians, admonish the idol,

  12. encourage the weak, be patient Lord. And some

  13. of us need admonishing and some of us need patience

  14. and some of us need encouragement. And I pray

  15. Lord that this morning you would meet us where

  16. we are, that you'd encourage us, that you would

  17. admonish us, that you would challenge us. that

  18. your kindness and your grace, your attentiveness

  19. would be evident in our lives. And then, Lord,

  20. having received such kindness and care, Lord,

  21. would we imitate you, please? God, shape us by

  22. your good news, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  23. So just around the time when Lily was being born,

  24. I attended a conference, actually along with

  25. Jed, the previous pastor here down outside of

  26. Atlanta in Decatur. And among other things that

  27. were going on at this conference, it was a bunch

  28. of pastors, was one of them, this guy named Martin

  29. Bond was giving a talk, kind of a discussion

  30. that he was leading. He gave a talk and then

  31. answered questions like these things happen about

  32. parenting. I remember thinking about it, of course,

  33. because partly I wasn't down there necessarily

  34. for that. But of course, in my mind, with the

  35. idea of having a child, this was something I

  36. was eager to hear about. And I had read books,

  37. and I continue to read some books on parenting.

  38. I listen to lectures and stuff. But what Martin

  39. Bonds said with me stuck. And here's what he

  40. was mostly talking about is that parenting kind

  41. of shifts. Like there's these different stages

  42. where parenting takes on certain sort of demands

  43. and sort of invite certain kinds of speech and

  44. actions and care for.
