  1. Welcome to the podcast of the White Church in Adelaide, South

  2. Australia. Excellent.

  3. Well, as. Justin mentioned we heard around

  4. the blood of Jesus last week. We're going to be talking a

  5. little bit about, you know, this story in Luke with, with Mary in

  6. the birth of Jesus. So we've sort of come full

  7. circle. We're back to the start and now

  8. we're going again. And I think it's funny because

  9. we're going to continue to do that forever.

  10. Talk about his birth, talk about his death, talk about everything

  11. in in between. Talk about the church.

  12. Talk. You know, it's just like this.

  13. There's no new, new things that we're going to be talking about

  14. here. Jesus has given us, you know,

  15. his word and and through the. Apostles, He's given us all that

  16. we. Need to know in the scriptures

  17. and and his Holy Spirit's with us and he's leading us and

  18. guiding us but. You know it says that the Holy

  19. Spirit will remind you of. The things that I've said and so

  20. we just continue just to to go through the word of God and and

  21. just to ask. For greater revelation.

  22. Of, of the truth of these things and what it means.

  23. And so I'm believing and trusting that even this morning,

  24. you know, this is, these are things that we've heard many

  25. times, but I'm trusting that we're going to be receiving a,

  26. a. Greater revelation of who?

  27. Christ is and, and what he's come to do and and these things.

  28. So Lord help us to do that. We open up our.

  29. Hearts to you, Lord. We can't grow.

  30. Ourselves, Lord, we can't, you know.

  31. Seek revelation through, studying through.

  32. Understanding the words on the page.

  33. Lord, it's your Holy Spirit that.

  34. Reveals the son to. Us and it reveals yourself so.

  35. We seek you. For that today, Holy Spirit,

  36. that you would reveal yourself, and that we would come to know

  37. you in a greater way. And so Amen so.

  38. So we we read the the story here with the kids.

  39. I mean, we could have just left it at that, right?

  40. That was that's pretty good stuff.

  41. So I'm not going to go for too long.

  42. So just relax. This is not going to be a long

  43. sort of sermon. So, Luke.

  44. One verse 26. Is where we're going to pick up

  45. this morning and I'm just going to start reading some verses.

  46. Here Luke one verse 26 it says now in the sixth month the Angel

  47. Gabriel was sent by God. To a city.

  48. Of of Galilee named Nazareth. To a virgin.

  49. Betrothed of a man whose whose name was Joseph.

  50. Of the House of David and the. Virgin's name was.

  51. Mary and having. Come in, the Angel said to her.

  52. Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you.

  53. Blessed are you among women. But when she saw him, she was

  54. troubled, and at his saying, and considered what manner of

  55. greeting. This was when the Angel said to

  56. her, Do not be afraid. And then the Angel said to her,

  57. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God, and

  58. behold, you will conceive in your.

  59. Womb and bring. Forth the Son, and shall call

  60. his name Jesus. He will be great and oh, and he

  61. will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will

  62. give him the throne of his Father.

  63. David. And he will reign over the House

  64. of Jacob Forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.

  65. Then Mary said to the Angel, How can this be, since I do not know

  66. a man? Then the Angel answered her, and

  67. said to her, That the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and

  68. the power of the Highest will over shadow you.

  69. Therefore also the Holy One who is to be born will be called the

  70. Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth, your

  71. relative has also conceived a son.

  72. In her old age. And this is now the 6th month

  73. for her who? Was who was called.

  74. Baron, For with God nothing will be impossible.

  75. Then Mary said, Behold, the maidservant of the Lord, let it

  76. be to me, according to. Your word.

  77. And the Angel? Departed from her.

  78. When you think about the virgin birth, it's what an what an.

  79. Unbelievable miracle, that is. You know that a child.

  80. Would be born to a woman. Who had never been with a man,

  81. never been married that causes. A lot of problems I think for

  82. you know for the. Situation.

  83. It's not going to get into that stuff now, but when?

  84. You actually consider what we're reading here for Joseph and for

  85. their families and for like. It's just, it's amazing.

  86. And we believe that that's true, right?

  87. You know when I mentioned some? Of these things to unbelieving

  88. people, you know. Sometimes maybe not this.

  89. Exact scene. They would say, do you actually

  90. believe that? And.

  91. You go. Yeah, I do.

  92. That is an unbelievable. Thing right there that we've

  93. read. But it is true.

  94. Right. We do believe that.

  95. And we believe it because what we know in here, there's a I

  96. just know, like it's one of it's like, you just know that, you

  97. know, like I just, I don't question this anymore.

  98. I believe this to be true. I've seen it in the scripture.

  99. I hold the scripture as true. I believe what it says.

  100. And I'm sure us in this room could say the same thing.

  101. We just, although we can't, can't understand these things.

  102. We just believe them because they are true, because it's

  103. God's word and we, we know that it's trustworthy.

  104. Amen. So we just believe.

  105. But it is amazing. Like it is unbelievable to the

  106. things that we read in the scripture, but we choose to

  107. believe. We trust God and Mary.

  108. Trusted the Angel that spoke. Imagine that.

  109. Imagine being Mary and having this Angel come and say to.

  110. Her you're going to have a son and.

  111. Not just any son, like you're going to have a son and he's

  112. going to be like the Most High and you know, he's going to be a

  113. king forever and all of these. Things.

  114. And Mary just believes, she says, according to your word,

  115. let it be. So this is, I think this is just

  116. testament to the sort of person that Mary was and Joseph as well

  117. when you read the story, God chose special people.

  118. For that privilege, you know. Which is just amazing.

  119. But. Mary asks a very obvious.

  120. Question of the Angel and of God.

  121. She says how can this be? Since I don't know?

  122. I haven't, I don't have a husband, I haven't known a man

  123. intimately. How on earth could?

  124. I have a son. It's a pretty obvious question

  125. to ask. Can I say that it's OK to ask

  126. God questions? Like it's OK to ask God

  127. questions? God asks hard things of us.

  128. God tells us impossible things and it's OK to ask God.

  129. You know, God asks us to, you know, Jesus told this rich man

  130. to give everything away and come follow me.

  131. We're, we're told to be generous and share things and give things

  132. away. Those are hard things.

  133. God asks hard things. You know, God asks us to forgive

  134. people no matter what, like no matter what people have done,

  135. you must forgive. That's a hard thing for God to

  136. ask of us because you don't want to in your in our heart of

  137. hearts, we don't want to forgive.

  138. This is a hard thing that God asks.

  139. God says fear, not fear not over and over again in the Scripture

  140. we're told not to fear, don't be fearful.

  141. That's a hard thing. It's like, you know God, how am

  142. I supposed to fear? Not when I feel scared, right?

  143. Like I'm feeling scared right now.

  144. I'm feeling fear and you're telling me to fear not how on

  145. earth, God. This is a question that we could

  146. ask God. How am I supposed to not be

  147. scared God there. There's a difference between

  148. asking God how and telling God you can't.

  149. You know Mary didn't say no, that's not.

  150. Possible. I can't do that.

  151. She. Said you know.

  152. How God? And so when we're faced with

  153. impossible things that God's asking us to do, there is a

  154. difference between me saying God, I can't.

  155. Forgive. Because you're saying I won't

  156. forgive. You're saying I'm not willing to

  157. forgive so it's OK to ask. God help me to forgive or show.

  158. Me how to forgive or how on earth can I forgive?

  159. But let's not just stamp our feet and say I can't do that.

  160. You know, this is not the example.

  161. That's. Mary, that Mary's given us here.

  162. So God, God's answer to. Mary is the same.

  163. Answer that God has for you and I when we seek God with hard

  164. things like how is this supposed to happen?

  165. How am I supposed to do this? The answer that God gives her,

  166. the Angel says, says the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and

  167. the power of the highest will over shadow you, and then he

  168. says, therefore therefore you will have.

  169. A son. Therefore, you'll give birth.

  170. To the King. And so that's our answer as

  171. well. When we face hard things, when

  172. we say, Lord, you know when your word says to me that I can live

  173. free from sickness. And when you know, when you read

  174. Psalm 91 and it says that you know he's going to over shadow

  175. you and, and be bring you under his wings and all these things,

  176. then it's like how God, I'm sick, I'm weak, I feel weak, I

  177. don't feel strong. How God am I going to overcome?

  178. How am I going to be healed? How am I going to live well?

  179. And it's the the power of the Holy Spirit that comes upon you

  180. that will. Empower us to walk out the.

  181. Things that God's calling us to do, the impossible things of

  182. God. It's the same answer for us.

  183. God doesn't. It's always by God's power and

  184. provision that we can do what God's asking us to do.

  185. And God will always provide what is needed for us to do what he's

  186. calling us to do, right. I think about, you know, I think

  187. about our Christmas lunch, you know, we talked about we.

  188. Sat around and we. Talked and we we counted the

  189. cost of how much is this kind of cost to do and.

  190. We came up with a. Figure and all of the money's

  191. there through through generosity and people's giving all of the

  192. money that. We we came up with a number.

  193. Justin did the math right. We have that money.

  194. We have more than that money. And that's because when God asks

  195. us to do things, God provides and he is faithful, right?

  196. And we can depend on him and trust him.

  197. And I think that's just a wonderful thing.

  198. And so I said this was. Going to be really short and it

  199. is going to be short. So there's there's one more.

  200. Thing that I just want to touch just out of this story that

  201. we've read, why is the Virgin? Birth important.

  202. And I would say that to believe that Christ Jesus came from the

  203. seed of men, like if you believe that he was just born of Joseph

  204. and not of God, we'd be denying Christ dearly.

  205. We'd be saying that he was just a man from man, as you and I

  206. are. But that is not the Jesus that

  207. we serve. The Christ Jesus that we serve

  208. was born of God. He's divine.

  209. He always has been. He always will be.

  210. Jesus is God. You could say that clearly,

  211. right? Jesus is God, Jesus is Lord.

  212. We serve one. God in three persons.

  213. That's what we believe in this church.

  214. That's what the Scripture teaches.

  215. It's God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy.

  216. Spirit. Jesus has always been the Son of

  217. God. This is one of those things that

  218. it's it's hard to. Wrap your head around.

  219. The. Things in.

  220. The word of God. That that.

  221. You know, it says that Jesus was slain before the foundation of

  222. the world, the. Lamb that was slain.

  223. Before the foundation of the world, before there was even a

  224. world. Like try and wrap your head

  225. around that glass. Like there's things that we just

  226. can't understand in our own. Understanding.

  227. But we know that it's true. So Jesus has always been the.

  228. Son of God. John 858 says that Jesus said to

  229. them most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was I am and

  230. the the Pharisees, and that that they.

  231. Knew what? He meant by that, you know, I, I

  232. speak to people and they say that Jesus never claimed to be

  233. God. Yes, he did.

  234. And the ones that that led him to be killed, they understand

  235. what Jesus was saying. I am he was saying I am I am.

  236. This is making reference to the burning Bush.

  237. Jesus made it very clear who he was and it matters who Jesus is

  238. to us, right. We have to have a a accurate

  239. understanding of who Jesus the. Son of God is.

  240. In our hearts, we need to believe on the right.

  241. Jesus, I guess is what I'm saying.

  242. So are we convinced that Jesus is Lord today, that he is God

  243. Almighty? Because he is.

  244. And people say, you know, I hear things even Hillary heard this

  245. week, people would say, you know, that people that don't

  246. believe in God or whatever they say, well, I believe in Jesus.

  247. Like I believe he was just a good teacher or he was an ethic,

  248. a good ethical guy. He was just a good man.

  249. But that's not what Jesus thought.

  250. That's not what Jesus said. That is not who he said he is.

  251. So for someone to say that Jesus was just a good teacher, well,

  252. you're you're saying that what he said was a liar.

  253. So you're Jesus is a liar is. What you're saying so?

  254. He's not a good. Person in your understanding

  255. he's a liar. He's not a liar and he's not

  256. crazy. He said what he what he said,

  257. and he meant what he said. Jesus is is God.

  258. So he wasn't just a good man. He was Lord God.

  259. Almighty Amen and God calls Jesus his begotten Son.

  260. In John 316 it says this is. A very well known verse.

  261. I'm sure we've all heard it, John. 316 For God so loved the

  262. world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever

  263. believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

  264. So begotten just means of God, you know, like I've begotten

  265. sons and they're of me. There's a piece of me in them.

  266. They've they've come from me. God, Jesus came from God.

  267. This is this word begotten. But it also says that that the

  268. that the let me read it again. It says for God so loved the

  269. world that he gave his son, his only begotten son.

  270. He gave his son. He was already a son.

  271. God gave him, his gave us his son and Isaiah 9 says the same

  272. thing. I'm just helping us to

  273. understand that Jesus has always been a son and he was given to

  274. us. God gave us his Son.

  275. Isaiah 9 says the same thing. In verse 6 it says for unto us a

  276. child is born. I love this scripture.

  277. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.

  278. God gave us his Son to be born. On the Earth.

  279. And you and I were lost sons and daughters.

  280. We weren't born sons of God. You know, just because God

  281. created mankind, it doesn't mean that when you and I were born

  282. that we were sons of the Most high, sons of God.

  283. It doesn't mean that the Scripture teaches that we were

  284. lost sons and daughters. This is why Jesus had to come.

  285. This is why the only begotten Son had to come.

  286. And do what he did. To save that which was lost, I

  287. come to save that which was lost.

  288. This is why sons that to become a son and daughter, we need to

  289. be born again, because we were born of Adam, we.

  290. Were born of the. Seed of man.

  291. Right, not like. Jesus.

  292. Jesus was born. Of the Holy Spirit.

  293. And so we need to be born again. The Spirit of God needs to come

  294. and live inside us for us to be considered sons and daughters of

  295. of of God, John one verse 12 says but as many as as.

  296. Received him to. Them He gave the right to become

  297. children of God to those who believe in His name.

  298. So we became children. We received the right to become

  299. sons and daughters. Through what?

  300. Through faith, through believing who Jesus is, through believing

  301. that Jesus is the Son of God, that he was born of the holy.

  302. Spirit and that he lived. And died and shed his blood for

  303. you and I that's the privilege, you know, through the blood of

  304. Jesus, that is the privilege that we can take a hold of that

  305. we have we take a hold of the right to become sons and.

  306. Daughters of the King, through what Jesus?

  307. Did that's a fantastic. Thing.

  308. Like, I couldn't say. Enough words to express.

  309. How wonderful it is to be lost and to be found and to be, you

  310. know, to be in death and to be born again through Jesus,

  311. through the blood of Jesus. Amen.

  312. Gosh, we've got so much to be thankful for.

  313. Behold what manner of love the Father have bestowed on us that

  314. we should be called children of God.

  315. I hope that's stirring up excitement in us to know that we

  316. have something very, very special, something more special

  317. than anyone could ever have. And if we can't get excited

  318. about that, I don't know that we understand the.

  319. Truth of the Gospel. Because.

  320. I get excited about things. Like I get excited about, you

  321. know, I like playing with RC cars and stuff.

  322. Like, I don't get excited about that.

  323. But this I get. I become alive when I think

  324. about what? Christ has.

  325. Done for me. You know we could.

  326. Get excited about many things about our kids and and about

  327. God's blessing. It's exciting to be blessed by

  328. the Lord, but this thing to know that He has died for us.

  329. And. That we are alive in him forever

  330. should. Just.

  331. You know, we shouldn't have to stir each other up to be able to

  332. praise the Lord. Amen should be bursting out of

  333. us when we catch a a heart revelation of this.

  334. It's an amazing thing that we have.

  335. And so we celebrate Christmas. Christmas is the birth of the

  336. Saviour, Jesus, the Son of God, and we worship him as Lord God

  337. Almighty. That's how we worship Jesus as

  338. God. You are Lord, you are King, you

  339. are Lord God Almighty. Amen.

  340. But there's much to be distracted away from.

  341. In this season. From that, you know, there's

  342. this is a busy time of season we've got.

  343. Dinners and we've got people and we're buying.

  344. Gifts and just. Go to the shops and just try and

  345. keep your head together. At the moment it's.

  346. Nuts. But anyway, we're.

  347. There's so many distractions. But we need to hold fast to what

  348. this means to the to what this season is all about.

  349. Because he is. All about.

  350. Him and so let's not get distracted in all of the stuff

  351. you know, let's not be working so hard to create a a nice space

  352. for our family and running around stressed and all of these

  353. things that we miss the point of what we're doing.

  354. We're coming together to celebrate what Christ has done

  355. and so don't be overwhelmed with work.

  356. You're working and and preparing and all those things.

  357. Trust the Lord for peace. These things don't matter, guys.

  358. You know, we're, we're going to come together and we're going to

  359. surf here and there's lots to do.

  360. And it sounds weird that I'm saying this, but we're going to

  361. be busy. But we need to center ourselves

  362. on who Jesus is and do this well and love one another.

  363. This is an amazing season for us, but we can't.

  364. Lose sight of who he. Is because this is all we have.

  365. It's all we have. We're going to take nothing out

  366. of this world. Nothing.

  367. All of the. Things that we think matter, we

  368. can't take them with us. You know, if we're if we're

  369. doing what Jesus has called us to do, we're going to take

  370. people with us. We're going to raise our

  371. families well and our family is going to be with us.

  372. We're going to make sure that we've done everything that we

  373. could to make sure that people around us come to know him.

  374. But that's all the only things that are going to come with us

  375. are going to be people that receive him as Christ and Lord.

  376. We do have a big part to play in that.

  377. But I will close with Isaiah 9. I'm going to read the whole

  378. thing. I love this.

  379. Maybe can we just stand to our feet while I read this just to

  380. let's just honour the word of God in this place.

  381. Isaiah 9, verse 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is

    Isaiah 9:6

  382. given, and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his

  383. name will be called. Wonderful Counsellor, mighty

  384. God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of His increase, and

  385. of his government and peace there will be no end upon the

  386. throne of David and over His Kingdom, to order it and

  387. establish it with judgement and justice.

  388. From this time forward and forever, the zeal of the Lord of

  389. Hosts will. Perform this.

  390. Isn't that amazing? Let's just, I'm just going to

  391. pray. Let's turn our hearts to the

  392. Lord. Lord Jesus.

  393. We thank you, Lord, that you are no mere man, that you are Lord

  394. God Almighty. We thank you, Lord, that you

  395. laid it all down and you came and you were born and you lived

  396. and you died and you rose again according to the scriptures.

  397. Lord, you shed your blood. That.

  398. The that the sins of the world could be forgiven and of your

  399. Kingdom, Lord, there will be no end.

  400. And we thank you, Lord, that we stand in this place today as a

  401. part of your covenant family, sons and daughters of the Most

  402. High, a part of your everlasting Kingdom.

  403. And it fills us with joy, it fills us with hope, and it fills

  404. us with peace. And Lord, we pray that all of

  405. those things would flow in US and through us this Christmas

  406. season, and all of the people around us would.

  407. Experience who you are. Give us boldness to speak your

  408. truth and Your word and your gospel.

  409. God, we pray that we would see Your mighty arm of salvation in

  410. our midst. This.

  411. Christmas season, Lord and. That you would be glorified.

  412. You would be lifted high, our amazing God and King.

  413. Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  414. Amen. Excellent.

  415. All right, I'm going to head back to Justin.

  416. He's going to. Cool.

  417. Thanks, Dave. Just a few different things that

  418. just popped out to me. Then obviously as we come into

  419. the season, if God is asking something of you, ask how, don't

  420. just say, I can't say God, how will this happen?

  421. But it's also that reminder of like merit, the story of Mary

  422. and Martha, like Martha, you're busy with so many things, but

  423. one thing is needed to sit at Jesus feet.

  424. I just pray this this Christmas season, all of us would find a

  425. place at Jesus feet. We just sit there and we're kind

  426. of go, wow, The wonder of who you are, the wonder of what you

  427. came to do, the wonder of how you were born.

  428. And and that incredible story, an impossible story.

  429. But as Mary said, with God, all things are possible.

  430. Amen. Amen.

  431. Thank you for joining us for today's message.
