The True Lord's Prayer Part 1 - John 17:1

Thank you for joining us. That key Life Fellowship for our

a.m. Now, let's open God's word and

ask him to reveal his truths for our lives.

Going to the Gospel of John 17th chapter Those of you who are

visiting with us for the first time, those of you who are

guests and not normal attendees here at Key life, you don't know

this, but I'll go ahead and tell you.

We've been going through the Gospel of John for quite some

time. Now verse by verse and We are

here at the 17th chapter and we're going to the next few

weeks break. This 17th chapter down in

several different parts. I wrestled with this all week

long verse 1, I was going to attempt to go beyond verse 1 but

I couldn't. Not and get you out of here by

3:30. and so, as I studied in, as I Contemplated and meditated

on verse 1 as what we're going to look at today.

The first verse chapter 17 John Bunyan said this, he said you

can do more than pray after you have prayed.

But you can't do more than pray, until you have prayed what a

statement. Jesus hear the king of kings,

and Lord of lords who condescended as we said, from

his glory, in heaven to this Earth, where he Became.

Flesh. And he failed his glory in his

flesh. And he came to this earth to

live as our example and to die as our sacrifices here in John

17, he is taking one more step closer to his predestined

Mission, his death, his burial and his resurrection in

accordance with the will of the father.

Is Jesus is moving closer and closer step-by-step to the

Suffering The Agony of the cross.

We're going to see that he is moved to prayer.

He's moved to prayer. He can't go any further.

Without praying. Just as bunion said, you can do

more than pray after you have prayed, but you can't do more

than pray until you have prayed. And here we see the Lord Jesus.

Moved. To prayer move to prayer and

many would ask. If Jesus Is God, as he's been

saying this whole time in his, I am statements in John, we've

talked about it over and over the deity of Christ.

Why would he have to pray to the father?

Let us not forget that in this subsistence, the these

subsistence e of the trinity. The Sonic came to do the will of

the father. It is, the Father's will that he

is seeking here. We see this laid out in Jesus

prayer here. In John, chapter 17 known as the

high Priestly prayer of Jesus. In this prayer, he is going to

pray as we will see today for himself.

He is also going to pray for the disciples who were with them.

They're on Earth at this time. As we will see in the lessons to

come. He's going to pray for us.

He is going to pray for each and every one of you who are in

Christ two thousand years ago. Jesus on his way to the Cross

stops. He prays for you.

People have sung a song in error so many times when he was on the

cross, I was on his mind know before the foundations of the

earth you were on his mind. he came to rescue, you He came to

intercede for you. We see his high Priestly prayer.

So much is going to be revealed about Jesus in the following

lessons and lessons lesson today.

I want you to pay close attention to it because many

people have called Matthew chapter 6.

What we see there, as the Lord's Prayer, when, in fact, Matthew

chapter 6, Jesus is not praying at all.

But what he's doing is he's instructing his disciples on how

to pray. He's teaching them and giving

them a lesson on how to pray. So that's not the Lord's Prayer

at all. That is the model prayer that

the Lord taught the disciples. Here's what prayer ought to be.

But here in John chapter 17, we're going to see the Lord,

actually praying. We are going to see the true

Lord's Prayer. We're going to see it here as

John unfolds, the details of this account for us just ours.

Before Christ goes to the cross. He's going to offer as our great

high priest. That's what Hebrews calls him.

Our great high priest, in the order of Melchizedek, he is our

Eternal high priest. We're going to see Jesus

operating in the office. Of the priest.

The priesthood of Jesus. He is going. to pray for us

prior to Becoming the sacrifice of atonement for us.

Jesus fear praying in John 17 verse 1.

John 17:1

It says this after Jesus said this.

He looked toward heaven. And prayed.

Father, the time has come. Glorify your son that your son

may glorify you after this. Whatever it was that Jesus said

and we go back to last week. Remember what he said?

In chapter 16, the last verse in verse 33, he said I have told

you these things so that in me you may have peace.

He just told them you're about to run for your life.

You're going to feel like you abandoned me but the father's

never going to abandon me have peace, rest in me the same Jesus

who told them, don't lose heart. Don't be trouble.

He says, I told you these things so that you in me may have peace

in this world, you will have trouble, but take heart, I have

overcome. The world and then.

Jesus begins to pray. After Jesus said this.

He begins to pray, not only for himself, not only for the

disciples who were about to run for their lives, but the

Disciples of all time who would follow the lord Jesus?

He looked toward heaven and he prayed again, father the time

has come glorify your son so that your son may glorify you.

What is this saying? What is this reviewing about

Christ? In this lesson, I want you to

see What this reveals. Not only about prayer.

But what it reveals about Christ. how compassionate he is,

how focused he is, how determined he is to do, the will

of God First thing that I want you to see as we look at this

first sentence of this prayer, as Jesus prays.

He Reveals His demeanor in prayer, his demeanor in prayer.

Look what it says he looked toward heaven and prayed.

This is no accident. That the holy spirit is through

John the Apostle included this very important detail in

Scripture. You ever come to Something in

Scripture? That you think?

Well, that's not that important you're wrong.

If it isn't included in scripture, the Holy Spirit

sought that it was very important.

In fact, it is infallible And it's important that we see this

Jesus demeanor. He looked toward Heaven, not an

unimportant detail, but a very crucial detail to understanding

everything else that we're going to see in chapter 17.

He looked toward Heaven. What does that tell us about?

Jesus reverent demeanor here during his prayer?

It tells us that he had a clear focus in his prayer.

He was focused with clarity. On his prayer and he was praying

to, he was not just casting wishes into the window.

That's so often is what our prayer life is.

We pray just casting our wishes into the wind, hoping that

somehow they make it all the way to heaven.

Presenting our wishlist to God. Hoping that it gets there.

He was not just casting his wishes into the wind.

He focused his eyes toward the father.

He focused himself toward the throne.

He was not just aimlessly throwing upwards as the pagans

do in fact, Jesus himself ridiculed people for doing that.

No, he had a purpose and a clear focus in his prayer.

He had a focus toward the father.

Why is this important because in Matthew chapter 6, when he told

Matthew 6 · chapter mention

his disciples? How to pray, look how he starts.

It's a lord, teach us to pray. Verse 9, this then is how you

should pray. They wanted to know how do we

pray in? Jesus said this then is how you

should pray. Our Father in heaven Hallowed Be

Your Name. Our Father in heaven.

Hallowed be your name. What did he teach them to do?

Cast your eyes to the Heavens to the father?

Jesus, demeanor in prayer here. Had a clear Focus.

For the father. He was exercising exactly what

he taught his disciples to do here.

Jesus didn't teach them. The praying to their Heavenly

Father only to somehow bypassed that in his prayer life.

No, it says he looked toward Heaven.

Why is that so important? Because that is where the Throne

of God resides. Jesus knowing full.

Well, this to be the truth. He looked toward the father with

a clear focus in the sprayer. Not only did he have a clear

focus in his prayer, he had a fervency in his prayer.

Now this is not going to be as we see.

John's 17th chapter unfold in the next few weeks.

This is not going to be a lifeless cold impasse in it

prayer. No, he is driven by fervent

passion in his prayer. To pray without passion is to

pray cold prayers. The Puritan Thomas Brooks said

this, he said cold prayers always freeze before they reach

heaven. What wisdom and insight into

that cold prayers just based from our fleshly desires or

maybe base from are a pathetic attitudes.

He says those prayers, don't even reach heaven.

Jesus did not pray with a lack of passion as we will see in

this chapter We prayed with fervency.

Not offering a cold prayer. Returns, a passionate gaze

toward the Father in heaven and reverence and in fervency James

James 5:16

5:16 to King James says it like this, the effectual fervent

prayers of a righteous man. Availeth much those fervent

prayers. What does that even mean?

That word at, we sieve for fervent.

Effective. You'll see it in a modern

translation that is the Greek word at where we get our English

word energy, so many times. Our prayers are dead and

lifeless weed out when we pray. You don't passionately focus on

God in our prayers. Here Jesus doing the exact

opposite of that fervent. In his prayer with great energy

and passion. We refer to these days that

we're going to see unfold toward the cross and the resurrection

as The Passion of Christ. But, you cannot be passionate in

his action, fervent in his actions unless he was first

fervent in his prayer. I would to God that every

Christian in this room here that you will only live the Christian

Life to the fervency to which you pray in your prayer closet.

You will only. Live out your passion in the

day-to-day. That you pray with in the

secret. Jesus, showing us this principle

here with a fervency in his prayer passion.

Toward the heavens toward the father, his entire demeanor as

we will see step-by-step laid out for us.

That he is passionate and not cold in his prayers.

We see Jesus fervency as our great high priest and how that

over Joy's my soul. To know that Jesus.

Dispassionate in the sprayer that we are about to discover

about to examine. His fervent in his demeanor.

He's clear and focused in his demeanor, Jesus is again,

fulfilling all of his Offices here but specifically The office

of priest. He being our Prophet, our

priest, and our King. We see him here praying, As that

great high priest would pray for those who he was making

atonement for. Next is Jesus.

Praise He reveals not only his demeanor in prayer.

But secondly, he Reveals His determination to do.

The father's will What he says next.

He looked toward heaven and he prayed father. the hour of the

time has come, You know, we've seen other instances in John's

gospel had only you remember with me and chapter 2 there at

the marriage in Cana of Galilee, there was the marriage supper

and they ran out of wine. And Jesus turned the water into

wine, but when his mother came to him, she said Jesus you've

got to do something here. This whole family is about to be

embarrassed, the party's not over and they never run out of

wine. What did Jesus say to her woman?

My hour has not yet. Come.

We see another time. At the Feast of Tabernacles in

John 7:30. But a desire to seize Jesus.

The father would not allow it why he escaped because his hour

had not yet come. We see again in John chapter 8,

John 8:20

verse 20, there at the temple and wanted to seize Jesus again.

They were not permitted to see him at this time, either why his

hour had not yet come, but in just a few hours here from John

17, there in the Garden of Gethsemane, they are going to

seize him only because he allowed them to do it, why?

Because his hour had come. The perfect timing and

fulfillment of the will of God had come.

And Jesus knew this, he says father the hour has come and he

is determined to in that statement to do the father's

will what a prayer? Jesus here, approaching the

father turning his eyes to heaven.

Knowing everything that is coming.

Father. The hour has come what he was

not doing, he was not giving the Father, the news that it was

time. That would be ridiculous.

Jesus was acknowledging. We're on the same page.

And I'm ready to fulfill what has been destined for me in

eternity past. The hour has come Jesus prayed,

knowing in and accepting whatever lie ahead.

Oh, we could learn so much from the Savior here in his prayers.

Lord, I don't know what lie ahead.

But I'm trusting in your will Jesus fully.

Knowing All of the terror. That just hours from then he

would inder. And he says, my hour has come my

hour has come to do your will father.

He knew the pain and the suffering that he would undergo.

He knew the ridicule in the mockery that he would face.

He knew that his beard as the prophet had proclaimed would be

ripped from his face and that his flesh would be torn from his

back and that Nails would be driven in his hands and his feet

and that a thorn crown of thorns would be pressed into his skull.

He knew all of these things. Said, it's time for this thing

the hour. Has come.

He knew the weight of sin. If he would carry the weight of

sin that he would carry, he knew that he was going to be weighted

down with the wrath of God, that belonged to the wicked Sinners

such as myself. He said the hour has come for

that. The hour has come.

That I submit to do the will of the father.

He was determined to do the will of the father, praying knowing

and accepting, what lie ahead. Why would the gun that we would

learn? That?

I would learn that we collectively could learn to

pray, whatever, lie ahead, Lord, your will be done.

The hour had come. And he would not make an

attempt. To evade that hour.

He would walk through the valley of the shadow of death. knowing

that he need not fear any evil here, he is knowing that full

well Accepting what lie ahead. Not only that Jesus prayed.

Embracing what he must do in accordance with the father's

will In accordance with the father's will in specifically

redeeming Sinners for God. The plan of the father had been

established in eternity past. Jesus was not just now getting

the memo on that. He knew the plan and he knew

that the time had come to its full fulfillment.

And that he Was embracing. Everything that the father had

planned in eternity past, he's embracing it in this prayer.

The hour has come Let It Be. Your predestined plan.

Has arrived. Acts chapter 2 Peter speaks of

Acts 2 · chapter mention

this predestined plan in Chapter 2 of Acts.

Peter says this, in verse 23, this man was handed over to you,

by God said purpose. He's talking about Christ and

for knowledge for God, set purpose and foreknowledge.

That means this, it was set in eternity past through the

foreknowledge of God. He knew exactly how it was going

to play out. And you with the help of wicked

men, put him to death by nailing him, to a cross.

But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony

of death because it was impossible for death to keep

its, hold on him. Jesus embraced what the father

had willed. Even though he probably wasn't

giddy about it in his Humanity. Oh we not are and forget that

though he is fully God. He is also here in John 17,

fully man. He wasn't giddy about going to

the cross. He was determined to do.

The father's will in spite of what he had to suffer.

What he had to endure? Knowing that the father would be

faithful to do, all that he had promised Jesus prayed embracing

what he must do in accordance with the father's will in

redeeming Sinners. And I'm so thankful today that

he did Where would we be? Had Jesus run from the will of

God in regard to the cross. I can tell you where I would be,

I would be a sinner lost in my sin forever.

Condemned to already destined for hell and wrath and judgment,

were it not for Christ obediently, fulfilling the will

of God through his death burial and Resurrection Calvary.

The plan of the father that had been established was now being

enacted by Christ. Not only did he embrace it.

And accept it as the father's will in this prayer.

We're going to see he obeyed it with his actions.

He obeyed it with his actions, John 4:34.

John 4:34

The Lord said my food said Jesus is to do the will of him who

sent me and to finish his work. He didn't say was just to accept

it and to embrace it, he said it is also to do it.

The follow-through in the action with the plan of the father,

Isaiah 50 verse 6. The prophet writing hundreds of

Isaiah 50:6

years before Christ, watch what he says, I offered my back to

those who beat me my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard, I

did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.

Isaiah hundreds of years before Christ revealed the plan,

exactly what was going to happen.

Exactly what did happen. And you know what Isaiah says,

he did not hide his face from this. but instead, He offered

his back to those who beat him, he offered himself, his cheeks

to those who pulled out his beard.

He did not hide his face from mocking and spinning, he endured

this. Jesus went through this to

redeem Sinners because it was the will of the father.

He embraced the father's will and he enacted it.

I putting it into action little lesson to learn here if we're

going to pray for the father's will.

We must also be willing to do the father's will so many times

we pray the will of the father because it's a spiritual thing

to do and then when we know the will of the father because we

see it clearly in the word of God, we neglect to do it.

That's simply just words, Thomas Watson said if the heart does

not accompany Duty. It's speaking not praying.

Thomas Watson, understood this and if you're truly praying from

the heart, you will embrace the will of God and you will act it

out in the duties of the Christian Life.

Jesus is acting this out. Here he is doing What he was

predestined to do. We mustn't ever mustn't, ever

pray. The will of God and then turn

around only to disobey the will of God that is just empty

speaking, that's not prayer, prayer is saying.

Lord Reveal Your Will to me why Not simply so I can know it.

But so as your child I can obediently do your will so many

times you know the will of God but you aren't actively doing it

should not be. So Jesus gives us a different

example here that we must do all that the father has willed in

every hour of our life just as Christ did even in his hour of

suffering and death. In our prayers.

Let us pray as Jesus did. But as trust in God's

providential plan, let us be determined to do the will of God

watch this even if it contradicts your will.

I am so thankful that the will of God contradicted, my will in

Salvation. I would have never come to God.

Had he not drawn me unto himself?

we've already learned that in John's gospel hadn't, we And no

man comes unless the father draws him.

How beautiful that is when we see the truth of that.

Jesus prays here and he reveals in his prayers.

Determination to do, the father's will As he continues to

pray in this one short sentence. We also see that he Reveals His

dependency upon the father, His dependency upon the father,

watch what he says. Next father, the time has come

Glorify your son. Glorify your son.

The only Glory that Christ was interested in was to be

glorified because of his obedience to the father.

Jesus depended on the father's glory and not in His glory

alone. John chapter 8.

John 8 · chapter mention

Verse 54. Jesus replied.

If I glorify myself. My glory means nothing.

My father whom you claim as your God, remember he was rebuking

the religious leaders there. He says is the one who glorifies

me. Well see the dependency of

Christ upon the Father. The glory of the sun was

finished and complete through the preordained work of the

cross. That the father had determined

in eternity past would come to be.

And here we see Christ accepting that and depending on to the

father to give him glory through.

It just as the father has promised that he He would Jesus

was simply trusting in the father to accomplish the plan.

That plan that he had laid out that plan that was his that men

would be redeemed and reconciled to a holy God.

So how beautiful it is to see the dependency of Jesus upon his

father? She the fathers?

Power. Displayed in his suffering

Christ depended on this. The father's power in his

suffering on the cross. He trusted the father would

glorify the sun in all of his suffering.

To take what wicked men intended for harm and to use it for the

greater good. And for the glory of God,

Hebrews chapter 2, the writer of Hebrews says this in verse 9,

but we see Jesus who was made a little lower than the Angels,

that's the condescension of Christ that we talked about

before, As we sing the song All sufficient Merit Now crowned

with Glory though we saw him made a little lower than the

Angels. Now he's crowned with Glory and

Honor because he suffered death And that by the grace of God.

He might taste death. For everyone.

Now, we see him, crowned, with Glory and Honor.

Why? Because he pleased the father in

his suffering, and in his death, Well, that is so foreign for us

to even attempt to grasp that the father would be pleased in

our suffering. Yes.

In fact, we're promised in Scripture that our sufferings

our light and momentary in this world.

They are light and momentary compared to the glory that we

will receive in Christ. And oh, what hope we have in

that Glory. Father's power.

Jesus was, depending upon it here in his prayer that he could

endure the suffering of the cross that he would once again,

where the glory of that suffering.

He also depended here, as we, look at his dependency upon the

father in Paris, he says, glorify your son.

He depended in the father's presence and his abandonment.

Remember back in 1632, he told his disciples.

You're all going to abandon me, but don't worry.

The father's never going to abandon me.

He depended upon the father to do just as the father had

promised. He would do Though he was

abandoned by all of those, he knew In the Flesh in his

lifetime. Though, he was placed in a grave

and buried. He was never abandoned by his

ever-present father Peter again preaching in Acts chapter 2 in

Acts 2 · chapter mention

the same sermon watch what he says he quotes the prophet David

verse 25 David said about him. He said this about the Lord, I

Saw the lord always before me because he is at my right hand

and I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad and

my tongue rejoices my body. Also will live in Hope because

you will not abandon me to the Grave.

Nor will you let your Holy One? See, Decay Jesus knew that

through David, that there was a promise that was already made in

eternity past, hit the father, would not let the sun stay in

that grave. And he depended upon the father

in his prayer here. Glorified me through my death

glorified me through my burial. Glorify me through my

resurrection trusting in the father to do that work.

Glorify your son. You trusted in the father's

presence. When all others abandon him.

Jesus trusted. The father would soon glorify

him. Price dependent on the father.

Defendant depended on the father's power in his suffering.

He depended on the father's presence and his abandonment.

And he depended upon the Father's Promise of his

resurrection from the dead Isaiah 53.

Verse 10, Isaiah being used by God.

To foretell the resurrection of Christ verse 10 is said yet.

It was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer was

God's will. We've already talked about that,

Jesus was embracing that the hour has come Glorify your son.

Though, the Lord makes his life a guilt offering.

He will see his offspring and prolong his days and the will of

the Lord will prosper in his hand.

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life

and be satisfied by his knowledge.

My righteous servant will justify many and he will bear

their iniquities there. In Isaiah's prophecy.

The Plan of Salvation is laid out that the Lord's will.

Was that the Sun be crushed? And then he suffer and that he

died. But he promised him, I'm not

going to leave you there. You suffer in your soul.

On the third day. That stone is going to be rolled

away and you are going to see the light of life and you are

going to be satisfied. Why?

Because the will of the father was accomplish It is through

Christ, that that Will was accomplished.

He trusted in the Father's Promise of his resurrection from

the dead here, as he says, glorify your son, he knows all

that that entail. Because the glory of the son is

in his suffering, it is in his death, it is in his period-- is

in his resurrection. It is in his Ascension, it is in

his soon to be returned. He knew that all of these things

had to be accomplished in the only way that they could be

accomplished. God, glorified the Sun.

Not the son seeking his own Glory.

Father, glorify. Son.

What a beautiful picture. We see there.

In a world where we so often seek to find and to achieve our

own Glory. Lord, I don't want to be

successful. In the eyes of this world.

Lord, you glorify your son. I want to be successful in your

eyes. I want to live out, the good

works, which you have prepared in advance for me to do that.

Bring you glory in this world. And on this Earth, as I live

this life, father I depend on you for any Glory that I have

and it is the glory of Christ that I share and that alone.

I tell people all the time. If you see any good in me, it is

the glory of Christ that has been graciously, granted to me,

by the father, You see Christ in me, not me.

Jesus here as he prays Reveals His dependency upon the father,

father's power in his suffering on the cross, the father's

presence and his abandonment and the Father's Promise of his

resurrection from the dead. And then lastly, as Jesus prays

revealing so much in this one little verse, He Reveals His

desire to bring, glory to the father.

What's this? He says, father, the time has

come glorify your son. and the only reason that I want to be

glorified, So that I can glorify you.

Glorify your son. That your son may glorify you.

Oh how different that is from our prayer.

Life Lord do work so I can benefit or do work so I don't

have to suffer any pain or any Agony Lords or do something.

So I have to go through any trial.

No knowing full. Well, what lie ahead, Jesus says

glorify your son so that I can bring you glory.

Oh, we could learn so much from the Heart of Jesus that is being

revealed. And just the intro to this

wonderful passage. He has here a desire to bring

glory to the father that the son may glorify you.

John chapter 12 we got a glimpse into this In this passage.

John 12 · chapter mention

If you remember back with me verse 23 it said Jesus replied,

the hour has come for the son of man to be glorified.

He was letting his disciples know that the time is

approaching. He said I tell you the truth,

unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it

remains only a Single Seed but if it dies it produces many

seeds. How many of you here today are

thankful? That you were one of those many

seeds that because Christ fell to the ground and he died in

that. We have been produced Just seeds

unto God, the man who loves his life.

He says, we'll lose it while the man who hates his life.

In this world will keep it for eternal life.

Whoever serves me must follow me and where I am.

My servant also will be my father will honor the one who

serves me. Now, watch what Jesus says, here

in verse 27. Now, my heart is troubled.

And what shall I say? Why was his heart trouble?

He knew what was about to happen, but watch what he says.

Shall I say father, save me from this hour.

Watch what Jesus says, no. It was for this very reason.

I came to this, Our Father, glorify your name.

Then a voice Came From Heaven, I have glorified it and will

glorify it again. How is he doing this?

He was glorifying his name through the Life of Christ of

the Miracles that he wrought to the preaching that he preached.

And now he's saying I'm going to glorify it again.

Then your death, your burial and Resurrection your Ascension and

your return. I'm going to glorify your name

because in glorifying your name, my name will be glorified.

Jesus prays that in his desire is to bring glory to the father.

Where is that in the American church?

When we pray, Lord, your will be done.

So that you can receive glory and honor and praise.

Jesus understood is that the glory of the father was his

entire purpose? The father's glory is the whole

purpose of Christ. Jesus came.

He said it many times to do the will of the father who sent him.

And he did it flawlessly. Is all sufficient Merit.

Flawlessly. He did, the will of God.

So that the father would receive all of the glory.

As he praised there in verse 1 of 17 that the son may glorify

you. The father's glory is the whole

purpose of Christ. May we never forget that.

And the father's Glory. Should be the whole purpose of

all who are in Christ. You share that purpose in your

prayer. What do you pray?

So that the father may be glorified or do you like most in

the American church? Pray only.

So you can get more The whole charismatic movement that is

built on selfish, American Greed, praise that way.

Don't join their ranks. What would happen if the church

started praying? This Lord, your will be done, no

matter what that is, even if I have to suffer.

So long. As you.

Are glorified. So long as you are glorified, be

analyzed the death, be it suffering in pain.

That's how Jesus prayed here, knowing suffering and pain was

just ahead. And he says I need you father to
