  1. Thank you for joining us at Key Life Fellowship for her Pulpit

  2. Ministry, podcast. Each sermon on this podcast is

  3. from our 11 a.m. Sunday service.

  4. We are glad that you have joined us digitally, but would love to

  5. see you in person on Sunday mornings at either 9 a.m. or 11

  6. a.m. Now, let's open God's word and

  7. ask him to reveal his truths for our lives.

  8. Would turn to John's gospel. The 17th chapter John in the

  9. seventeenth chapter of his gospel is recording here for us

  10. as we have seen in the last two lessons.

  11. What is known as Jesus High Priestly prayer which we have

  12. labeled the true Lord's Prayer. The true Lord's Prayer.

  13. Contrary to what many people think that the Lord's Prayer is

  14. found in Matthew. That is the model prayer that is

  15. Jesus teaching his disciples. How to pray this here in John.

    John 17 chapter mention

  16. Chapter 17 is Jesus actually praying.

  17. This is the true Lord's Prayer. We're going to see in this

  18. prayer today that Jesus intercedes.

  19. For his own. We will begin examining this

  20. portion of the high Priestly prayer in this third lesson.

  21. And in this third lesson, we are going to see that Jesus

  22. intercedes. For his own as their great high

  23. priest. Isn't it good to know that we

  24. have a great high priest who intercedes for his own?

  25. He's going to direct petitions to the father on behalf of his

  26. sheep in this prayer. In fact, specifically those

  27. sheep over there with him. During this time they are the

  28. eleven eleven remaining Apostles.

  29. We know Judas Iscariot has already betrayed Christ.

  30. He's already gone his way of Perdition.

  31. Now, it's Jesus. The 11 who remained. we're going

  32. to read about this today, and he's going to pray specifically

  33. for them, but there are lessons in this for all disciples who

  34. will follow after them, Sinclair Ferguson says this.

  35. In his book entitled lessons, from the upper room, he says

  36. that we should turn to the high Priestly prayer of Jesus

  37. frequently. To find out what Christ most

  38. wants. We should turn to this prayer

  39. frequently to find out what Christ most wants.

  40. This is the deepest desires of Christ.

  41. He is petitioning, the father. It's the same as when you go to

  42. the father and you pour out your deepest desire, Christ tears,

  43. pouring out, his deepest desires to the father and in this

  44. portion of the high Priestly prayer, we are going to as mr.

  45. Ferguson has said, we are going to see and to find out what

  46. Christ most wants for his disciples.

  47. To even begin to imagine. That the Lord cares for me

  48. enough. That he cares for you who are in

  49. Christ enough. To have any other desire for us

  50. than that, we would perish in hell, like we deserve.

  51. Is astounding. We're going to see he Reveals

  52. His desire for his own. In this prayer.

  53. He is going to pray specifically.

  54. For the Believers. We are going to see that in this

  55. lesson, and then when we meet again for our John lesson, after

  56. the Resurrection Sunday break, which we will take next week,

  57. you don't have to advertise that on Facebook to know that a

  58. church is going to have a resurrection service on the

  59. resurrection holiday. We have one every week here.

  60. Every weeks the Lord's day every week is Resurrection Day. but

  61. when we return, we're going to see not only does he pray for

  62. these eleven who are with him on Earth, the apostles He's going

  63. to then pray for us. and to think, That 2000 years ago.

  64. Jesus is going to share in a prayer.

  65. To the father. What he most wants for me.

  66. The one who was a deserving of hell and of judgment.

  67. Yet he rescued me. So as we look at the true Lord's

  68. prayer. Today, we're going to see Jesus

  69. interceding for his own. I told the men when we started

  70. this, as one of my favorite passages of scripture, and I

  71. really do mean that and I know you find me saying that all the

  72. time about every passage that I come too. but this one, If you

  73. will, pay close attention with me today.

  74. Begins to reveal the true heart. That Jesus does have.

  75. As intercessor for those who the father has given him.

  76. We talked a lot about that. Last week.

  77. We're going to see that again. Look at John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  78. Verse 9. I'll read it all in and we'll

  79. break it down. He says, I pray for them.

  80. I'm not praying for the world attention to that.

  81. Not praying for the world, but for those, you have given me

  82. over all the people in the world who just think that Jesus is on

  83. their side, the wrong. I'm praying for all those you

  84. have given me for. They are yours.

  85. Who are his, those who the father has given.

  86. There's no need to work that out again.

  87. First 10, all I have is yours and all you have is mine.

  88. Glory has come to me through them.

  89. He's saying again so that we can understand it.

  90. We are one in essence. I will remain in the world no

  91. longer, but they are still in the world, and I'm coming to

  92. you. Holy Father, protect them by the

  93. power of your name. I'm coming to you.

  94. Then he calls on the father, Holy Father.

  95. Protect them by. Your name.

  96. The name, you gave me so that they may be one as We Are One.

  97. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them

  98. save. By the name you gave me.

  99. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so

  100. that the scripture would be fulfilled.

  101. I want Doom to extract the destruction, he didn't say the

  102. one who was saved and then got lost.

  103. He says, he was doomed to destruction.

  104. He was never of Christ. John told us this is epistle.

  105. He went out from us because he was not of us.

  106. I'm coming to you now. But I say these things while I'm

  107. still in the world so that they may have the full measure of my

  108. joy within them. Stop for a second.

  109. Jesus is just hours from the cross.

  110. Hours from the cross. And he's not focused on nails,

  111. he's not focused on a Crown of Thorns.

  112. He's not focused on the scourging, that's about to take

  113. place as they rip flesh from his back, he's not focused on his

  114. beard being ripped from his face.

  115. He's not focused from the embarrassment and the shame of

  116. hey me hanging naked there on a tree.

  117. He's not mentioning those things.

  118. He's wanting to join of his disciples to be complete.

  119. What a beautiful picture here of the savior's heart.

  120. He says this, in verse 14, I've given them your word and the

  121. world has hated them for they are not of the world, any more

  122. than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take

  123. them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil

  124. one. They are not of the world even

  125. as I am not of it sanctify them by the truth.

  126. Your word is truth as you sent me into the world.

  127. I have sent them into the world for them.

  128. I sanctify myself that they too may be truly Sanctified.

  129. Jesus said I set myself apart so that they would do the same

  130. thing. Let us look at this and let us

  131. break down this prayer of intercession from Christ.

  132. This is an intercessory prayer. He is praying for others.

  133. That is the definition of an intercessory prayer, where one

  134. prays for another, where one stands in the gap for an

  135. individual or a group of individuals, he is interceding

  136. in his prayer petitioning. The father for his own, this is

  137. a prayer of specificity. Now you've heard me say

  138. specificity wants I'm going to try not to say that too many

  139. times today because if I say specificity, I'll mess it up.

  140. If I say specificity too many times, I'm going to mess it up

  141. but don't you see? This is a specific prayer, this

  142. is a specific prayer, a pointed prayer, a directional prayer.

  143. Not a general prayer not, not another blanket prayer.

  144. This is a direct prayer for an exclusive group in that

  145. exclusive group is his own. They are that specific prayer.

  146. Verse 9 makes this very clear. I pray for them.

  147. I am not praying for the world. Who is he praying for his own?

  148. But for those, you have given me, those, the father has given

  149. him his true sheep for. They are yours.

  150. He's not praying for Judas here. Judas was not his own to father,

  151. had not given him Judas. He was not of the sheep pen,

  152. he's praying for his own. All I have is yours and all you

  153. have is mine. Glory has come to me through

  154. them, he is praying specifically for the Believers.

  155. This is specific intercession for his own for the elect.

  156. He said, I pray for them. It doesn't make any two ways

  157. about it doesn't apologize for not praying for anyone else.

  158. He is interceding for the Saints.

  159. Those the father had given him, what a privilege it is to be,

  160. given to the son by the father and to know that the sun is

  161. interceding for us. He says, I'm praying for them.

  162. He says, I'm not praying for the world.

  163. Do you know, he knows who the world is.

  164. He knows all of the unredeemed Just as he knows all of the

  165. redeemed before they ever know it.

  166. He knows it. He says are not praying for

  167. them. Jesus was not praying for the

  168. unbelieving world, why? He's not the intercessors for

  169. the unbeliever. If he were the intercessor for

  170. the unbelievers, they would be saved because he would mediate

  171. between them and God. Just as he does for the

  172. believer, they are not saved and he's making that very clear.

  173. I'm not there intercessor. That's why he includes the

  174. phrase. I'm not praying for the world.

  175. Oh, what a privilege. It is your Christian to have

  176. Christ interceding for us. Is, I'm not praying for the

  177. world. I'm praying for my own.

  178. Intercedes for his church. He doesn't understand for the

  179. world. Why does he not intercede for

  180. the world? Because he's going to judge the

  181. world. Although man on Thursday, nights

  182. are studying and walking through the Book of Revelation.

  183. Just this last week, we saw the great white Throne judgment.

  184. It is at the great white Throne judgment that all of those whose

  185. names were not written in the Lamb's Book of Life before the

  186. foundations of the Earth, Resentenced to the lake of

  187. everlasting fire. Which is the second death for

  188. their unbelief and their sin, they were judged out of books

  189. and the books that we learned about, were these.

  190. There were books that contain to every sinful deed that they had

  191. ever committed, aren't you thankful that in Christ?

  192. All of our sinful Deeds have been cast as far as the East is

  193. from the west where he remembers them no more.

  194. Aren't you thankful that they are at the depths of the ocean?

  195. Never to be seen again, but for the unbeliever, this is not

  196. true. The unbeliever, he will stand

  197. before God and he will answer for every single Wicked deed.

  198. And then if that's not enough, he will then answer for the fact

  199. that his name is not in the Lamb's Book of Life that he is

  200. not truly saved that. He did not truly believe unto

  201. Christ for salvation. He'll be their judge.

  202. And the situation. All the world loves to scream

  203. that. Oh, don't judge me.

  204. And I warned you this there is a judgment that is coming upon the

  205. unbelieving world. Jesus is not praying for you in

  206. this text here. In John chapter 17 because he

    John 17 chapter mention

  207. knows each and every one and he knows they will stand before

  208. him. And he has been given authority

  209. to judge them and they will experience the second death in

  210. Hell forever. You can't erase that from the

  211. word of God. He says, I'm not praying for

  212. them. But I am praying for my own.

  213. He intercedes for those and only those who were his those and

  214. only those who are hints. When the enemy wants to bring an

  215. accusation against a True Believer, it is Christ who

  216. intercedes for us and says they have been covered in the blood.

  217. All of the accusations that you bring against them they are they

  218. are arranged. They are null and void, why?

  219. Because my blood has cleansed him as we sing about just a

  220. moment ago from all of their sin.

  221. He's praying for his own. It's specific intersection.

  222. Intercession Ford Is he laying not only?

  223. As we look at this intercessory prayer of specificity, is it

  224. specific? Intercession for his own.

  225. It is specific intimacy with his own.

  226. Look at verse 10 verse 10 there. In the first part.

  227. All I have get have is yours and all you have is mine.

  228. He's talking there about the deep and intimate Fellowship,

  229. that is own have with the father.

  230. And with the sun, this is revealing specific intimacy for

  231. his own. It is revealing that they have

  232. been allowed communion with the father and that they have been

  233. allowed at communion with the sun.

  234. This is specific intimacy. Meaning this that he loves his

  235. elect with a different kind of love than the general love that

  236. he has for the world, he loves them with a communing

  237. fellowshiping. Intimate love, he reveals that.

  238. Here it is. That love it is that love that

  239. allows us to commune with the father and fellowship to be one

  240. with him and to commune with the sun and fellowship and to be one

  241. with him. In fact, first John John says

  242. this in his first epistle chapter 1 verse 1 that which was

  243. from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen

  244. with our eyes, which we have looked at in our hands have

  245. touched this. We Proclaim concerning the word

  246. of life. The life appeared.

  247. Yes, it was Christ. We have seen it and testify.

  248. Do it. And we Proclaim to you, the

  249. eternal life, which was with the father and has appeared to us.

  250. Eternal life was with the father.

  251. When in eternity past, Now, we've seen and heard of it, so

  252. that you also may have fellowship with us and our

  253. fellowship. Watches is with the father and

  254. with his son, Jesus Christ. Now, see if John didn't borrow

  255. this. From the words of Jesus, we

  256. write this to make our joy complete Was John saying here,

  257. John was saying this and there's intimate Fellowship for the

  258. saint with the father and the son.

  259. There is true, intimate communion and there is no

  260. intimate communion in any other way.

  261. Why is there true intimate communion between the father and

  262. the son with the believer? Watch this because Jesus prayed

  263. for it in John chapter 17. Jesus is praying for that

    John 17 chapter mention

  264. intimacy for his own that they would No, the father as he knows

  265. the father and they would know the Sun as the father knows the

  266. son and that they would be one with the father.

  267. And with the son is a specific intimacy for his own being

  268. revealed. He praised not for the world

  269. here. He has no deep intimacy and

  270. communion with the world. In fact, they shrug at his

  271. General love that he shows them everyday.

  272. And how does he show them General?

  273. Love the lost. Man is alive right now,

  274. somewhere, eating lunch, enjoying life, and it's only

  275. because of God's General benevolent.

  276. Love for mankind, that he does that because he deserves to die

  277. and he deserves judgment and he deserves hell.

  278. Oh, how much deeper? Is the love of God in Christ for

  279. those who the father has given the sun.

  280. Allowing them, intimate communion with the godhead, deep

  281. intimacy, only for the True Believer.

  282. This intercessory prayer of specificity is special

  283. intercession for his own and specific intimacy with his own

  284. thirdly. He reveals in this specific

  285. intentions for his own specific. Intentions, look at verse 10,

  286. all I have is yours and all you have is mine & Glory has come to

  287. me through them. You said?

  288. My specific intention for my followers.

  289. Is that they bring me Glory? That Christ would be seen in and

  290. through his disciples. He speaking in past tense as if

  291. it's already happened because it's already determined it's

  292. going to happen. Don't you love when Jesus does

  293. that he speaks of something that hasn't yet happened?

  294. As if it's already happened because the father has already

  295. spoke it into existence in eternity past, he said these

  296. disciples are going to bring me Glory really Peter's going to in

  297. that deny him three times and in just an hour or so.

  298. How could that be? Jesus knows the full story.

  299. Aren't you thankful for that and he doesn't base the full story

  300. based on your mess ups on the front end, he's got the whole

  301. thing already figured out. He's saying that here specific

  302. intentions for his own. What is this specific intentions

  303. for his own? It's this and he would be seen

  304. through his true disciples and that in Christ being seen in his

  305. true disciples. They would bring glory to him

  306. with their lives. It's as good as done.

  307. All of these who he's praying for here.

  308. You know what they went on to do Bring glory to God with their

  309. lives. He's apostles who he is

  310. specifically praying for here today, are the reason that we

  311. are here this morning, because they continue to be faithful to

  312. that, which Jesus prayed, they would be faithful to and that

  313. was the Gospel and the glory of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

  314. Do you see when Jesus prays things happen?

  315. What Comfort we have of knowing that if we are truly his His

  316. intentions for us will come to pass and what is his attention

  317. intention for the True Believer. That Christ would be seen in

  318. them and that they would bring Glory with their lives and bring

  319. others to the gospel with the message that they preach.

  320. The words that they Proclaim, this is an intercessory prayer

  321. of specificity is specifically for his own before you go making

  322. accusations, who does Jesus think that he is?

  323. I'll go ahead and tell you, he's king of kings and Lord of lords

  324. and he can pray for whoever. He wants to whenever he wants

  325. to, and you have no business and trying to tell him how to do it

  326. differently. I'll take that, as praise.

  327. I hope he does. The next thing we see this

  328. intercessory prayer is I prefer security.

  329. Want you to pay close attention to this?

  330. 11 through 16 talk about security.

  331. Jesus is praying that his disciples would be secure verse

  332. 11 speaks of this. He says, I will remain in the

  333. world no longer, but they are still in the world.

  334. Jesus grieving that he's leaving his disciples.

  335. I am leaving the world. Where is he going?

  336. Just as he said, he's going back to the father.

  337. But he knows he's going to leave them into the world and you

  338. know, this he knows everything that they're going to face.

  339. He knows the persecution. He knows that Peter's going to

  340. deny him three times. He knows the agony and the

  341. internal Agony that Peters going to face in the shame because he

  342. denies Christ. But he also knows that he's

  343. going to restore Peter on the Sea of Galilee and he knows his

  344. that Peter is going to go on and on the day of Pentecost, he's

  345. going to preach the greatest sermon that the world has ever

  346. heard since Christ, preached and thousands are going to be saved.

  347. And he knows that Peter one day is going to be crucified upside

  348. down on a cross, and he's going to do that with great joy in his

  349. heart. He knows what's going to happen

  350. here. Yeah, he knows that they need

  351. security. I will remain in the world no

  352. longer, but they are still in the world and I am coming to

  353. you. Holy Father, protect them by the

  354. power of your name. He's saying, father protect

  355. them. The name you gave me so that

  356. they may be one as we are one while I was with them.

  357. I protected them and kept them save by that name you gave me.

  358. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction.

  359. It was destiny that he was lost, so that scripture would be

  360. fulfilled. He's praying for the security of

  361. his own Jesus interceding here in prayer for his disciples that

  362. they would be secure and protected by God.

  363. This is the reason for a Believers eternal security.

  364. This is the sun petitioning, the father to preserve his own, this

  365. is the doctrine which is called the preservation of the Saints

  366. or persevering faith. This Doctrine was wrought not in

  367. the minds of theologians. This Doctrine is wrought to the

  368. prayer of Jesus here. In John, chapter 17, Jesus asked

    John 17 chapter mention

  369. that his father followers be preserved.

  370. People ask me, why do I believe in eternal security?

  371. Because Jesus prayed that his followers would be eternally

  372. secure and I doubt That Jesus didn't pray.

  373. The father's will. But he did pray, the father's

  374. will because that's how he taught others to pray.

  375. And he prayed perfectly, the father's will and the father

  376. secures, all those who are truly in Christ, he keeps them 1st

  377. Peter, chapter 1. Verse 3 says, praise be to the

  378. God and father of our Lord, Jesus Christ in his great Mercy.

  379. He has given us a new birth into a Living Hope through the

  380. resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an

  381. inheritance that can never how many times never perish spoil or

  382. fade. Watch this kept in heaven for

  383. you. I'm glad it's not kept here

  384. because I would probably find it in mess it up.

  385. It's kept in heaven for you who through faith or shielded by

  386. God's power until the coming of the Salvation that is ready to

  387. be revealed in the last time. Why are we shielded by God's

  388. power? Because Jesus prayed that we

  389. would be preserved by the father's power.

  390. Look at that verse 11. He praised this I will remain in

  391. the world no longer but they are still in the world and I am

  392. coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the

  393. power of your name. You are protected in Christ by

  394. the name of Jehovah, God of God. Here's another is Almighty.

  395. There's no one above him. You're a preserved by the

  396. father's power. You were kept.

  397. Why? Because you're good.

  398. Because you're a churchgoer. No, you're kept by the father's

  399. power because the sun asked the father, that it would be.

  400. So I'll see the prayer of Jesus here and how beautiful this is.

  401. You were kept and preserved. You are eternally secure

  402. preserved by the father's power because Jesus asked that it

  403. would be. So second Corinthians 1:21 says,

    2 Corinthians 1:21

  404. now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ,

  405. who does it? Is God.

  406. It's God who makes us stand. Firm in Christ.

  407. You thought it was you. I'm sorry that you're sadly

  408. mistaken. It is God, he anointed us set

  409. his seal of ownership on us and put his spirit in our, hearts,

  410. as a deposit guaranteeing. What is to come, why didn't you

  411. do this? Because here, in John chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  412. 17, Jesus asked that the father would the father is faithful to

  413. do with the sun, ask just as the sun is faithful to do what the

  414. father asked of him. What a beautiful picture.

  415. We see there that we are preserved by the father's power.

  416. He said Holy Father, protect them.

  417. Not only preserved by the father's power were preserved by

  418. the sun's position. The sun's position, look at 11

  419. as it continues. He says, I will remain in the

  420. world no longer, but they are still in the world and I am

  421. coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the

  422. power of your name. The name, you gave me So that

  423. they may be one as we are one. He says the name that you gave

  424. me. And what does that name?

  425. That name is familiar name. I hope to us.

  426. It is the name Jesus. Jehovah saves it is the name of

  427. that. The father gave to the son and

  428. his Incarnation. Why is that so important?

  429. Jesus says, father, protect them by your name and then also

  430. protect them and preserve them by my name.

  431. The name you have given me the position that you have

  432. established for me. And what is that position?

  433. Let me just tell you what that position is in case you think

  434. that Jesus is ever going to let you down.

  435. Philippians 2:9 says, therefore God, exalted him to the highest

    Philippians 2:9

  436. place. This is right after we see

  437. Christ condescend into this Earth.

  438. As a human humbling himself and humbling himself to death on a

  439. cross. And because of that watches his

  440. therefore God, exalted him to the highest place and gave him.

  441. The name, that is above every name that at the name of Jesus,

  442. every knee should bow in heaven and on Earth and under the

  443. Earth. And every tongue confess that

  444. Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God, the Father who

  445. protects us who preserves us Jesus, it is the name that is

  446. above every name and who gave him that name.

  447. It is the father and it is Jesus here saying father continue to

  448. preserve them by the name that you gave me.

  449. Orange, you think for this morning that you were preserved

  450. in Jesus the Christ, aren't you thankful that?

  451. He is your lord and your savior and you have no reason to doubt.

  452. What he says is true, your preserve your preserved by the

  453. father's power. Your preserved by the sun's

  454. position. Protected by Jesus himself.

  455. In fact, Philippians, 1:6 tells us this Being confident of this

  456. that he who began a good work in, you will carry it on to

  457. completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

  458. You can Bank on it. If you are his, you are secure

  459. in him until the day Christ returns and you are glorified,

  460. Protected by Jesus. There is no other name.

  461. It is the name that is above every name.

  462. Hebrews 7:25 it says, therefore, he is able to save completely to

    Hebrews 7:25

  463. the uttermost. He is able to save completely

  464. those who come to God through him, because he always lives to

  465. intercede for them. He started interceding for us in

  466. John, chapter 17 and he always continues to intercede for his

    John 17 chapter mention

  467. own. Showing us that the work that he

  468. has begun will be completed. Also thankful for that this

  469. morning. I'm so thankful that he didn't

  470. let me get in here and mess that up.

  471. I told the first service, I'm glad he didn't let me be

  472. involved in that because I'm a professional Messer upper Earth.

  473. I know that's not proper English.

  474. But you get what I mean. If you ever just had one of

  475. those days where Everything You Touch, just fell apart.

  476. How about one of those weeks? How about one of those months?

  477. We could go on, couldn't we? If we could mess it up.

  478. We would mess it up. Aren't you thankful that he

  479. doesn't let us? That were preserved by the

  480. position of Jesus Christ. Unless somehow he falls off the

  481. throne. And he's not going to.

  482. Because there's no one big enough to knock him off the

  483. throne. Is the name that is above every

  484. name that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow.

  485. And every tongue confess and he is the one who is preserving his

  486. own. Oh, I get so aggravated with

  487. people who don't want to adhere to the doctrine of eternal

  488. security security, the preservation of the Saints.

  489. I get aggravated with them and the reason that I get aggravated

  490. with him is because they miss the whole point.

  491. That we are eternally secure, not because we deserve it, we

  492. are eternally secure because Jesus Christ prayed that it

  493. would be. So, and I got a problem with you

  494. thinking that you can somehow override a prayer of Jesus by

  495. your behavior. I'm thankful that Jesus preed.

  496. Those that the father has given him would be preserved by the

  497. father's power and by the sun's position.

  498. We also see this. Will be preserved from the

  499. prince of this world. Look at verse 15.

  500. Verse 15. My prayer is not that you take

  501. them out of the world. That's what the charismatic

  502. wants. They won't live to be peachy and

  503. Rosie chipper all the time. So in this life Jesus said,

  504. you'll have all kinds of troubles.

  505. It's going to be that way. He's not going to take us out of

  506. the troubles just for the sake of taking us out of the troubles

  507. until it is. His appointed time what he's

  508. going to do is he's going to receive Glory through our

  509. suffering. He's going to receive Glory.

  510. Through our trials, he's going to receive Glory through our

  511. pain just as the father of receive Glory through the pain

  512. and the trials and sufferings of Christ.

  513. Oh what shoes we get to fill isn't that amazing?

  514. He says I'm going to ask that you take them out of the world

  515. but you protect them from the evil one, protect them from the

  516. evil one, The Prince and the power of this world.

  517. Satan, Jesus is praying right here for the protection of his

  518. own from the enemy. Boy, don't we need this prayer?

  519. Doesn't it seem as we look around in the society and the

  520. culture that we live in that Satan is just running rampant in

  521. our culture. Aren't you thankful that?

  522. Because of the prayer of Jesus, he's not running rampant in your

  523. life. He's not destroying your home,

  524. he's not destroying your family. He's not taking away your

  525. salvation. He can't do those things.

  526. You're secure in Christ. Okay.

  527. Need to see view. Yes, he tries all the day long,

  528. doesn't he? But he has no power in

  529. comparison to the power of Christ when we dressed in that

  530. he dressed in the protection from the prince of this world.

  531. In fact, Romans chapter 8, Paul says this, in verse 37, no, in

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  532. all things, we are more than conquerors.

  533. How many things? All thing?

  534. It all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved

  535. us for, I am convinced. That's what Paul's convinced up.

  536. That neither death nor life Christ, Our Hope and life

  537. deaths. We just saying Neither death,

  538. nor life, neither angels, nor demons.

  539. Neither the present, nor the future, nor any powers neither

  540. height, nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be

  541. able to separate us. Who's the us there?

  542. The True Believer is own. Nothing will be able to separate

  543. us from the love of God. That is in Christ Jesus.

  544. Our lord, not even the evil one Satan himself.

  545. Why? You got it all figured out.

  546. Is your here on Sunday morning at your Bible open, reading it

  547. because you went to enrich and get a little deeper Bible study.

  548. Or is it because Jesus prayed that it would be, so I'll go

  549. ahead and answer it for you. It's because Jesus prayed that

  550. it would be so that we would be preserved and protected from the

  551. prince of this world from Satan himself.

  552. I'll remember when you were lost and undone and without Christ,

  553. and Satan would just wreak havoc upon your line.

  554. But now that you are in Christ, you can take the word of God and

  555. you can apply it to your own life.

  556. You can see the words of James where he says, humble yourself

  557. resist the devil and he will flee He has no power over your

  558. life, why? Because you were more than a

  559. conqueror in every situation because of Christ, Jesus.

  560. That's a promise that he has given us through a prayer that

  561. he prayed in John, chapter 17. We see this is a prayer of

    John 17 chapter mention

  562. intercessory in regard to security.

  563. This was a prayer of security and preservation of his own.

  564. Each of us here in Christ, we were preserved because of Christ

  565. and his prayer here that we are seeing this morning were

  566. preserved by God. The father has requested by

  567. Christ, the son confirmed by the indwelling holy spirit that

  568. lives in each of us confirming. Guaranteeing that we have a

  569. redemption in store for us in an inheritance in store for us for

  570. all eternity just as the word of God promises.

  571. What a picture of the Triune godhead.

  572. Completing the work in accordance with the prayer of

  573. Jesus. In John chapter 17, he said

    John 17 chapter mention

  574. father protect them, preserve them.

  575. The father done. Protect them by your name,

  576. protect them by my name. And then he sends his

  577. indwelling, holy spirit to live in us to show us and his prayer

  578. was answered on thankful for the holy spirit this morning and my

  579. life who confirms over and over and over again.

  580. It doesn't matter what I feel. What matters is what I am

  581. according to the word of God. And I am a born-again

  582. blood-bought redeemed, adopted child of the most high God

  583. through Jesus Christ. Our Lord, he gives us great

  584. security and this prayer as he prays that his followers would

  585. be protected and preserved. And then, in the last couple of

  586. verses, I want you to see this This is also an intercessory

  587. prayer. For sanctification for

  588. sanctification sanctification. For his own 417, says this

  589. sanctify them who his own? He still talking about those,

  590. the father has given him sanctify them by thy truth.

  591. Your word is truth as you sent me into the world.

  592. I have sent them into the world for them.

  593. I sanctify myself that they too may be truly Sanctified Jesus.

  594. Praying that his followers would be distinctly set apart.

  595. That's what, Sanctification means it means that you are set

  596. apart. They would be set apart from the

  597. wicked unbelieving world that they live in.

  598. Then he goes on to praise specifically how they would be

  599. set apart. He says sanctify them by truth.

  600. Set them apart. My truth.

  601. And then he says she word is truth.

  602. How is the Believers set? Apart from the world through the

  603. word? He says sanctify them by the

  604. word because that's truth again, Sanctified being specifically,

  605. set apart for God and His glory and his gospel through obedience

  606. in Christ. It's the word that sets us

  607. apart. It's the word that makes us

  608. different. It is the word that finds us

  609. like fire. It is the word that changes us

  610. from the inside out. It is the word that renews our

  611. minds daily. If you're not being transformed

  612. by God's word, there is a good chance that you're not being

  613. Sanctified because you are not Sanctified and if you're not

  614. being Sanctified, there's a good chance that you're not truly

  615. saved. Is the one that hurts my

  616. feelings? I'm not here to hurt your

  617. feelings. I'm here to cause you to examine

  618. your life. Are you being set apart by the

  619. word of God? The pastor you don't understand.

  620. I just don't have time and I just really don't have interest

  621. in the Bible therein my friend, lies your problem.

  622. You're not set apart from the world because you don't have

  623. time for the word of God. And I take issue with a person

  624. who calls himself a Christian who does not have a hunger for

  625. the word of God. He said sanctify them by the

  626. truth. Your word.

  627. It's true. We can learn so much from the

  628. psalmist on this issue. Psalm 119 verse 9 says this how

    Psalms 119:9

  629. can a young man keep his way pure?

  630. How can a young man keep his way, pure all in this day and

  631. time? How can an old man keep his way

  632. pure? How can a young man keep his way

  633. pure watch this by living? According to your word here, you

  634. can go ahead. And you can reverse that By

  635. living according to your word, a young man, keep his way pure,

  636. but if he doesn't live according to your word, he's not going to

  637. keep his way pure. Verse 10 says, I seek you with

  638. all my heart. Do not.

  639. Let me stray from your commands. Think the psalmist loves the

  640. word of God. Don't, let me stray from your

  641. commands. He's got a hunger for the word.

  642. He says, in verse 11, I've hidden your word in my heart.

  643. Why? So that I can be smart and do a

  644. lot of things. No.

  645. Watch as I've hidden your word in my heart, that I might not

  646. sin against you. It's all misunderstood

  647. sanctification by the word. Verse 12, says, praise be to

  648. You. O, Lord, teach me your decrees

  649. with my lips. I recount all the laws that come

  650. from your mouth. I rejoice in following your

  651. statutes as one, rejoices, and great riches.

  652. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

  653. I Delight in your decrees, I will not neglect your word.

  654. Why did he not want to neglect his work?

  655. He knew that the word is truth, and that the word is the key to

  656. True sanctification. Why?

  657. Because Jesus prayed it in John, chapter 17, Word is truth.

    John 17 chapter mention

  658. We are to be set apart by that true Force.

  659. Peter. 1:22 says, now that you have purified yourselves by

  660. obeying the truth, so that you have sincere love for your

  661. brothers. Love one, another deeply from

  662. the heart for you. Have been born again, not of

  663. perishable seed. But of in perishable through the

  664. living and enduring word of God, watch what he continues to say

  665. for all men like grass are like grass and all their glory is

  666. like the flowers of the field. The grass withers.

  667. The flowers fall but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  668. He quotes from The Prophet there.

  669. And he goes on to say this and this is the word that was

  670. preached to you and you usually stop there because you think

  671. it's the end of a chapter but keep reading because there's

  672. more in Chapter 2. Therefore therefore what?

  673. Therefore, because he has given us the living and enduring word

  674. of God that has redeemed us, watch what he says, next.

  675. Therefore, rid yourself of all malice and all deceit,

  676. hypocrisy, envy and slander of every kind like newborn babies

  677. crave, pure spiritual milk. Milk.

  678. So that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

  679. Now that you have tasted that the Lord is good, I dare you get

  680. in his word and taste and see how good the Lord is and watch

  681. when you do how he grows you up. Spiritually.

  682. This is word that sets us apart of his, his word that sanctifies

  683. us. The true disciple of Christ will

  684. be set apart by the word. In fact, Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  685. talks of the church being Washed by the Water through the word.

  686. When he's talking about the husband-and-wife relationship in

  687. regard to the relationship of Christ and his church, it is the

  688. word that sanctifies us and cleanses us and sets us apart

  689. the True Believer, hungers for the word, the True Believer

  690. wants to sit under the preaching of the word.

  691. The True Believer wants to join a Bible study the truth Ever

  692. wants to join a research group. The True Believer wants to be

  693. discipled. He wants to learn, she wants to

  694. learn. Growth is something they desire.

  695. Why? Because Jesus prayed it in John,

    John 17 chapter mention

  696. chapter 17. That the father would sanctify

  697. the True Believers by his word. If you're indifferent toward the

  698. word of God, you have no interest in the word of God.

  699. It's not that. I doubt your salvation.

  700. It's that you should. You should.

  701. You should really test yourself and say, wait a second.

  702. I have no desire for the word of God.

  703. And Jesus prayed at his own would be Sanctified by truth.

  704. I can't be Sanctified by truth, which is the word if I have no

  705. desire for the word. Perhaps you have no desire for

  706. the word because you don't truly know Christ.

  707. I would encourage you to repent and turn to Christ today.

  708. Cry out to him to rescue your wretched soul.

  709. You would be saved and that you would be Sanctified.

  710. We're Sanctified by the word as Jesus praise here.

  711. But he also praised that through the word at sanctifying them,

  712. that they would be Sanctified, not just by the word, but

  713. Sanctified from the world Sanctified from the world.

  714. It's interesting here. The same word that brings

  715. persecution to the believer. Jesus is talking here and he

  716. says that they hate you because of my word.

  717. That same word that brings persecution to the believer,

  718. will also bring protection to the believer.

  719. The world is going to hate you because you stand in the world

  720. word over and over and over again.

  721. We see that in scripture. Let me give you a warning.

  722. If the Believers Are hated by the unbelievers.

  723. Because the unbelievers hate the word of God.

  724. It's according to scripture, he said that is what is going to

  725. happen. Jesus even told his disciples.

  726. Remember the hated me first? Why do they hate cry?

  727. So much? The word that came from his

  728. mouth. The truth, wh the truth Jesus

  729. praying here, that we would as Believers be Sanctified by the

  730. word. So that we will be Sanctified

  731. from the world set apart. Wholly different.

  732. Knowledge and submission to God's word in the life of a

  733. believer. Is what should and will

  734. distinguish us from this lost and sinful world.

  735. If you look just like the world, if you act just like the world,

  736. if you talk just like the world, you use their same language you

  737. and take the same substances that they enjoy.

  738. You've not yet been set apart from the World by the word.

  739. You have a spiritual issue here and I would say work out your

  740. salvation with fear and trembling see if you truly do

  741. know Christ, Because I believe this, I believe that Christ

  742. prayer didn't fail here. Some of you call yourselves a

  743. Believer, you think Christ's prayer fell because you're not

  744. Sanctified by the word. You're not Sanctified from the

  745. world and you think somehow Christ's prayer failed.

  746. It didn't Remember who he's praying for.

  747. He's praying for the True Believer so we can come to this

  748. conclusion. The True Believer will be

  749. Sanctified set apart by the word and the True Believer will be

  750. Sanctified and set apart from the world.

  751. The apostles agree with this. In fact, they teach it, they

  752. lived it and we are to be Sanctified from the world.

  753. Second Corinthians chapter 6, The Apostle.

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  754. Paul in this discourse, watch what he says, verse 14 do now

  755. Not be yoked together with unbelievers.

  756. Who are the unbelievers the world?

  757. It is a synonymous term. For what do righteousness and

  758. wickedness have in common? Or what Fellowship can light

  759. have with Darkness. What Harmony is there between

  760. Christ and Belial? What does a Believer have in

  761. common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between

  762. the temple of God and Idols for we are the Temple of the Living.

  763. God, I told you a moment ago, the True Believer has the

  764. indwelling, Holy Spirit living in them.

  765. They are the temple of God. He's saying what is the true

  766. temple of God have in common with all of this wickedness from

  767. the world? As God has said, I will live

  768. with them and walk among them, and I will be their God and they

  769. will be my people watch. What verse 17 says, pay

  770. attention. When you see a therefore in

  771. scripture of everything that you read, just before that, he says,

  772. therefore come out from them who the unbelievers the world,

  773. therefore come out from them and be separate says the Lord.

  774. Sanctification is not optional for the True Believer and

  775. follower of Christ. Sanctification is evidence that

  776. you are a True Believer. You will be Sanctified by the

  777. word and you will be Sanctified set apart from the world.

  778. Why? Because Jesus prayed that his

  779. own would, now we can come to this conclusion, if you're not,

  780. it could be. That is because you are not his

  781. his own. You look like the world and you

  782. act like the world and you talk like the world, you do as the

  783. world does. say, whatever you want to say, you're the world.

  784. Stop being foolish. If you don't look different from

  785. the world. Because of God's word, you are

  786. not Sanctified, you cannot continue in friendship with the

  787. world and think that you have an intimate communion with God,

  788. friendship with the world. According to what James wrote is

  789. emnity toward God, John said, this John said you can't love

  790. the world. And love the father that if you

  791. love the world, the love of the father is not in you.

  792. I have preached this for years and I have not made many friends

  793. because of it and I am thankful that I'm not here to make

  794. friends, but I am here to Make Disciples of Christ.

  795. A disciple of Christ cannot hold onto the world with their left

  796. hand and hold onto Christ with their right hand and think that

  797. this is the biblical Christ that they are holding onto.

  798. This is a make-believe non-biblical non-Christian

  799. Christ. Because the True Believer as

  800. Christ Just prayed. Will be Sanctified by the word

  801. and Sanctified set apart from the world.

  802. There will be a distinct difference, he is marking his

  803. own out, and he is separating them, even at this moment.

  804. If there's never been a change in your life, You have not yet

  805. been born again. For if you are in Christ, you

  806. are a new creation. I don't think that the word can

  807. be erased and changed to fit your life.

  808. Are you a new creation? He said sanctify them by the

  809. truth. Your word is truth and then he

  810. prayed that they would be Sanctified from this world The

  811. world that does and looks and speaks and acts.

  812. Contrary to the word of God. He says you're going to be

  813. different than that. Can I ask you just a common

  814. sense question while we're on that subject?

  815. Why would Jesus save you just so you can be what you've always

  816. been? Wouldn't that be a pointless

  817. death when that be for nothing? But, you know, that's not what

  818. scripture? Teaches scripture teaches that

  819. Jesus died. So, that you could be changed

  820. and transformed so that the Lost World could see that

  821. transformation. And know that God has done a

  822. work in your life, that brings us to the next part,

  823. sanctification here. He's praying for sanctification

  824. that we would be Sanctified by the word is Sanctified from the

  825. world and then Sanctified to reach the world Sanctified in

  826. order to effectively reach the world.

  827. With the gospel, we're set apart by the word set apart from the

  828. world so that the world will see that we are different.

  829. Something different about us if you look, And talk and act just

  830. like the rest of your coworkers. And claimed to have Christ.

  831. They see no need for Christ. Well that's just pure basic

  832. Common Sense, isn't it? But did you know the True

  833. Believer who is set apart by the word and set apart from the

  834. world? Scripture tells us that the

  835. world will inquire of the hope that we have in Christ.

  836. They're going to see when that situation comes in our life that

  837. they would be moaning and groaning complaining and

  838. cussing. Swearing about That in our life,

  839. we handled it completely different.

  840. Why? Because we handle it, according

  841. to the word why we've been set apart by the word.

  842. We handle it opposite of how the world would handle it.

  843. They'll take note of that they're going to come to you and

  844. there and some of you have walked with Christ long enough

  845. to know that this is true. They're going to come to you and

  846. they're going to say, why did you handle that?

  847. That way. That's not how I would have

  848. handled it. What's going on?

  849. I knew you before and you wouldn't have always handled it

  850. that way. Then there you can declare to

  851. them. The reason that I handle it this

  852. way is because I now belong to Jesus Christ.

  853. He has saved me. Yes, changed me is done a work

  854. in my life. I am no longer the creature that

  855. I used to be full of sin and full of self.

  856. I have been redeemed. I have been set apart and

  857. Sanctified for the glory of God in any good.

  858. You see in me, that is Christ. Give him all the credit that he

  859. deserves. And share the gospel with them

  860. that they might believe. Sanctified to reach the world.

  861. Why is it important that we hear this prayer of Jesus?

  862. He prayed at his own, Would be people of the word and people

  863. opposite of the world. So that through them and the

  864. message of Christ that they preached, he could then continue

  865. to draw others out of the world. Isn't that the way that he

  866. designed it to work? How will they know less the

  867. preacher tell them and how can a preacher be effective if he's

  868. just like them? All of you say, well praise the

  869. Lord, I'm not called to preach. You're all called to preach the

  870. gospel. Just because you don't stand in

  871. the pulpit and preach, it doesn't mean that you're not

  872. called to preach the gospel. You were called to tell everyone

  873. with every breath that you have the Glorious.

  874. Good news of Jesus Christ. He's offering here prayer of

  875. sanctification that they would be Sanctified by the word

  876. Sanctified from the world and Sanctified to reach this Lost

  877. World. What a beautiful prayer we see

  878. here in John's gospel, You know that as Jesus was just ours.

  879. Away from the cross. His mind at this place was not

  880. on what he had to endure. He was praying that his own

  881. would be saved secured and Sanctified saved, secured and

  882. Sanctified in. Aren't you thankful that?

  883. That's what he does in the lives of those who are truly, his The

  884. prayer of Jesus. Didn't go on answer.

  885. Aren't you thankful for that this morning?

  886. I'm thankful in my life at the prayer of Jesus.

  887. Didn't go unanswered. That in eternity past, the

  888. father gave me to the Sun and he made sure that I was saved

  889. secured and sanctified. Jesus prayers.

  890. Didn't go on answer. Let's close with this a true

  891. disciple. A true disciple.

  892. Will. They will know the father and

  893. the son, intimately through the communion, that Jesus died for

  894. the believer to have, that's his prayer that they would be saved.

  895. That they would experience that true communion you have this in

  896. your life. Do you have communion with the

  897. father and with the son? Do you have that deep

  898. fellowship? If you're a Believer here today,

  899. I'm not telling you something that you don't know anything

  900. about. You know, you can testify.

  901. Yes, I do have that. You can sing.

  902. As the old hymn says Andy walks with me, and he talks with me

  903. along, life's narrow way. Yes, I have that communion with

  904. him because of Christ. Do you have that this morning?

  905. Have you truly surrender to Jesus as your lord and savior?

  906. Are you one of the ones here that he's talking about who were

  907. truly his? Have you surrendered by faith to

  908. Jesus as Lord and Savior as your only hope of forgiveness and

  909. eternal life? Are you trusting in his cross as

  910. the thing that cleanses you from your wickedness?

  911. Are you still lost in your sin? Are you still of this world?

  912. If you are, he wasn't praying for you here.

  913. I'm praying for you now. I'm praying to God now that he

  914. would graciously open your eyes that you would see your need for

  915. Christ and that he would graciously save you this very

  916. morning. Raps, you are in Christ.

  917. No, this a true disciple will be secured forever. because of the

  918. preservation that Jesus prayed for right here in John, chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  919. 17, Well, good news. We have there.

  920. Why am I preserved forever? Is it?

  921. Because I'm good now and I get it.

  922. All right. No, in my flesh.

  923. I'm still as rotten as I've ever been.

  924. I am preserved by the goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  925. By the power of the Father, by the position of the sun proven

  926. by the indwelling, Holy Spirit who lives in me until that day,

  927. that I longed for where I'm glorified and redeemed eternally

  928. because of Jesus Christ in the price that he paid on my behalf

  929. on the tree of calvary. Be secure in that believer.

  930. Rest in that. Walking Insurance.

  931. Always that Christ prayed in John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  932. For his own. And if you're his own, you will

  933. be secure forever. I make no apologies for that.

  934. A person who wants to believe in a doctrine that contradicts that

  935. believes that Jesus didn't know how to pray.

  936. I'm here to tell you today. Jesus knew exactly how to pray

  937. because he knew this guy would mess it up if I could.

  938. And he prayed that I wouldn't And I can't.

  939. True disciple. We'll find security in Christ

  940. and Christ Alone. In the sprayer that we've seen

  941. today. A true disciple will be

  942. Sanctified by the word. Is the word sanctifying you?

  943. Is it changing you? How do you leave men's bible

  944. study on Thursday night? Challenged and changed.

  945. By what you hear motivated to share the gospel motivated to

  946. live a life that brings God glory pretty leaving in

  947. different. An apathetic attitude.

  948. A True Believer. He's going to be Sanctified

  949. through the word and they're going to love his word, just as

  950. the psalmist in Psalm 119. Ramada, Tate it on it.

  951. Day and night. Are you being Sanctified is God,

  952. setting you apart? For his glory.

  953. And for his gospel will be encouraged today by the prayer

  954. of Jesus. If you were a Believer here

  955. today, Because you're not a Believer here today.

  956. I pray that God would graciously save you.

  957. As you cry out to him this hour. as you cry out to him, the only

  958. one Who can rescue center from hell and judgment.

  959. Let's pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus, we

  960. thank you for your word. Lord.

  961. How beautiful are your words to us who are in Christ?

  962. To see your heart. For your own.

  963. Causes me to worship and adore, you even all the more.

  964. Thank you for being gracious and compassionate savior.

  965. God, I pray for those who are not saved in the in our midst,

  966. Even This Moment. God, I pray that you would be

  967. gracious to them and save them today.

  968. Draw them out of Darkness into your Marvelous Light.

  969. Regenerating them to the power of your holy spirit, that they

  970. would believe forsaking, all sin and self and turning to you

  971. Lord, Jesus as Lord and savior of their life today.

  972. But your will be done as we yield to your Holy Spirit now in

  973. Jesus name. Amen.
