  5. Amen. Isn't it always wonderful?

  6. Too afresh and a new behold the wondrous mystery of Christ for

  7. hundreds upon hundreds of years. They only longed to see what we

  8. have seen in him in our day. What a joy that is.

  9. If you have your Bibles, if you would, and if you've been here

  10. any amount of time, you know we're going to the 119th Psalm

  11. this morning as we continue our series entitled Living Life in

  12. the Light of God's Word. I pray that over the last few

  13. weeks as we have been diving into the 119th Psalm, I pray

  14. that you have been challenged. I pray that you have found

  15. yourself hungry for the Word of God.

  16. I pray that you have found yourself diving into the Word of

  17. God, studying the Word of God, meditating on the Word of God,

  18. allowing yourselves to be consumed by God's very word

  19. through the Scriptures. As we continue this journey this

  20. morning, if I were to ask you a question, that question were to

  21. be this are you truly depending upon God in your life?

  22. What would the answer be? Many would say very quickly,

  23. yes, I am depending upon the Lord, but upon further analysis,

  24. many would have to say I am depending upon the Lord.

  25. Sometimes partially, kind of a little for salvation.

  26. But what I want us to see today, as we look at a true dependence

  27. upon God, the psalmist is going to give us a great example of

  28. what that looks like. Because sadly, in the world and

  29. even in the church these days, many unfortunately would rather

  30. depend on their own sinful minds and intellect, their own human

  31. strength or might, their own worldly riches.

  32. They would rather. Depend upon these things than to

  33. depend upon an all knowing, all powerful, all sovereign God in

  34. all things. When we talk about dependence

  35. upon God, we are talking about full and total dependence upon

  36. God, and it's something that to be quite.

  37. Honest is not frequently discussed in church, nor is it.

  38. Frequently even pointed to as important because generally what

  39. we've we do is we depend on ourselves until things.

  40. Get out of our control. We depend upon ourselves as long

  41. as we have the strength, and then when all of our earthly

  42. human resources run out or fall short as they will.

  43. Unfortunately, then, and only then, does a person really step

  44. to the point where they are depending upon God.

  45. Fully, and in today's message, we're going to see the psalmist

  46. who was depending upon God fully.

  47. He's depending upon God and He's depending upon His word, and He

  48. is trusting Him in every single area of his life, as we will see

  49. in everything. As we look at this passage

  50. today, it's going to serve as a guide for us to really answer

  51. the question as to whether or not we are really depending upon

  52. God. Because unfortunately, many

  53. depend upon God for forgiveness of sin and eternal life, and

  54. they never continually depend upon Him again.

  55. Oh, and He will be faithful to deliver, to deliver that which

  56. He has promised. But oh, the blessing and all the

  57. joy that you're missing out on by not walking in dependence on

  58. God in every situation, in every area of your life.

  59. So as we look at Psalm 119, let us see this as our example in

  60. this next 8 verses, as you were familiar with the 3rd letter of

  61. the Hebrew alphabet, gamille. Gamille will be situated just as

  62. the first 2 letters of the Hebrew alphabet were in eight

  63. verses. And we're going to look at all

  64. eight of those verses today because all of those verses

  65. belong together. Therefore, we're going to study

  66. them together and we're going to learn them together.

  67. And we're going to see the heart of the psalmist here who is

  68. depending upon God and everything.

  69. Verse 17, he says this, Do good to your servant, and I will

  70. live. I will obey your word.

  71. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law.

  72. I am a stranger on earth. Do not hide your commands from

  73. me. My soul is consumed with longing

  74. for your laws at all times. You rebuke the arrogant who are

  75. cursed and who stray from your commands.

  76. Remove from me scorn and contempt, for I keep your

  77. statutes. 23 says. Though rulers sit together and

  78. slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees.

  79. Your statutes are my delight. They are my counselors.

  80. Let's pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus, we

  81. come to you, thanking you for your word that you have given

  82. us. Lord, may we not fall into the

  83. error of depending on ourselves or depending upon worldly

  84. resources? And we see the.

  85. Example of the psalmist here who understands what it means to

  86. depend upon You and Your Word. As we uncover these truths

  87. today, may You use them to change our lives for Your glory.

  88. God, I pray for the person who's here, who is lost, who is never

  89. truly depended upon you for salvation.

  90. God, I pray today that you open their eyes to see the fact that

  91. they must depend upon Christ to save them from their sin, to

  92. wash them and cleanse them from their wickedness, and to grant

  93. to them eternal life or they will face the eternal wrath of

  94. God. I pray that you make that known

  95. to them today, that they would depend upon You for salvation.

  96. What I pray for those who have already depended upon you for

  97. salvation. I pray that that not be the

  98. extent of their dependence. That they would today, by Your

  99. word be challenged, and that by Your Spirit they would be

  100. empowered to live a life of true dependence upon You, and that

  101. you would receive all glory and honor and praise for their

  102. lives. And we pray all these things in

  103. the mighty name of Jesus. And all God's people said, Amen.

  104. We see very quickly here as we jump into this text, an example

  105. of a true dependence upon God and His word.

  106. And there's some identifying marks that I want you to pay

  107. close attention to here. Now, I don't believe for one

  108. second that this was the psalmist intent to to describe

  109. or to prescribe for you. What it means to depend upon

  110. God, but what He does do in His statements is He reveals to us a

  111. person who is truly and fully depending upon God and upon the

  112. Word of God. And so from that we can learn a

  113. great lesson. Let us learn that lesson

  114. together today. So if there's true dependence on

  115. God in a person's life, if you were to examine your life today

  116. and ask this question, and I hope that you already have.

  117. Am I truly depending upon God as I should?

  118. There will be some evidence and the first thing that we see is

  119. this. If there is true dependence on

  120. God, there will be dependence upon God's grace.

  121. Verse 17. The psalmist makes it very

  122. clear. Concerning his dependence upon

  123. God's grace, he says this in verse 17.

  124. Do good to your servant. Oh, without the goodness and the

  125. grace of God, where would all of us be?

  126. He says Do good to your servant and I will live.

  127. And he says I will obey your word.

  128. The Psalm is here depending on God's grace, Do good to your

  129. servant. He's understanding this.

  130. Without the goodness of God we would all perish.

  131. He's understanding it even further.

  132. Without the goodness of God. None.

  133. Of us would live, none of us would exist.

  134. None of us would breathe. He's pointing others to depend

  135. on that same. Goodness.

  136. Matthew Henry in reference to the Psalm, once said, all grace

  137. grows as love to the word of God grows.

  138. Matthew Henry simply saying this the more we love the Word, the

  139. more amazing and magnificent God's grace becomes.

  140. We see the extent of that grace and the importance of that

  141. grace, and as we see that, that grace grows.

  142. Was that true When we open the pages of Scripture and we began

  143. to love the Word of God and we began to see the goodness of God

  144. coming off the pages of Scripture in reference to how we

  145. live our lives and how God has been good to us in our lives as

  146. believers and followers of Christ, the more that we love

  147. the Word and the more that we delve into the Word, the more

  148. Amazing Grace becomes. I'm a firm believer that when

  149. the church stopped loving the word of God, grace stopped being

  150. amazing to the church. Because when you turn the pages

  151. of scripture, you can't help but see statements like the psalmist

  152. makes here. Do good to your servant and I

  153. will live. Do good to your servant and I

  154. will live. What is he saying here that were

  155. it not for God's grace, he wouldn't even be alive?

  156. Yes, he is. First talking about physical

  157. life depending upon God's grace. First to live thanking God for

  158. his physical life. I'll please know this if you're

  159. under the sound of my voice this morning, whether that's in this

  160. auditorium, whether that's through some social media

  161. outlet, if you were listening to this, your very existence, the

  162. fact that your heart is beating, the fact that your lungs are

  163. breathing, the fact that you are alive this morning is only by

  164. God's grace. This is true both for the saved

  165. and for the lost. Even the lost man who is living

  166. is under the common grace of God that has allowed him the gift of

  167. life every little baby. In our infant classrooms down

  168. the hall, every single one of them, a gracious gift of life

  169. from the father. Every mother who is here

  170. expecting a child with a little baby in their womb.

  171. I know that's not what the Liberals call them, but they are

  172. there's. Babies in a mother's womb alive

  173. because God has breathed life into them graciously.

  174. The psalmist understands this, his dependence upon God's grace

  175. to live. He understands what Job said in

  176. Job chapter 12 verse 10, where it proclaims about God in His

    Job 12:10

  177. hand is the life of every creature in the breath of all

  178. mankind. He's not a person who has ever

  179. lived. Who did not live because of the

  180. grace of God? What would happen if we really

  181. understood that we'd wake up each morning with a song of

  182. Thanksgiving in our heart, a shout of praise, a prayer of

  183. thankfulness for the fact that we've been given another day to

  184. live for the glory of God. We would get on our knees and

  185. thank the Lord for those who live alongside of us, for our

  186. wives, for our husbands, for our children, those who has given

  187. life to enjoy with us and to serve Him in.

  188. The psalmist understands this. It's important that we depend

  189. upon God's grace to live. In Acts 17, Paul speaking there

  190. to a group of pagans, he says, For in him we live and move and

  191. have our being. Oh, what a gracious God who

  192. allows us to be, who allows us to live, who willed us into this

  193. world only by his grace. And so the psalmist begins

  194. there, depending upon God's grace because of life, not just

  195. physical life, but spiritual life.

  196. May I insert this? The only reason that any of you

  197. are spiritually alive this morning is because God

  198. graciously regenerated you to new life spiritually.

  199. You were not born into this world spiritually alive.

  200. In fact, Jesus himself said you must be born again or you cannot

  201. see the Kingdom of God. That regeneration, and that is

  202. an act of God's grace and a work of God's grace must occur

  203. spiritually so that you can live spiritually.

  204. So the Psalm is here, of course, looking at physical.

  205. Life but also a spiritual life that we've all in Christ been

  206. graciously given his word reveals that to us.

  207. Ephesians chapter 2 verse one when the apostle Paul says this

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  208. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.

  209. What were you sick? Nope.

  210. Feeling a little ill? Not at all.

  211. Limping around? No.

  212. Having a spiritual medical condition?

  213. No. You were beyond all those

  214. things. You were dead spiritually

  215. because of sin. We must understand that that

  216. apart from God's grace, none of us will live again spiritually.

  217. He says, As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and

  218. sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of

  219. this world and of the ruler of the Kingdom of the air, the

  220. spirit who is now at work and those who are disobedient.

  221. You know what he's saying, You're spiritually dead.

  222. You're following Satan, the system of this world.

  223. He says in verse 3, all of us also lived among them at one

  224. time. This is the Apostle Paul saying

  225. that that I also lived among them at one time the same.

  226. Spiritually. Dead.

  227. He's just gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature

  228. and following its desires and thoughts like the rest.

  229. We were by nature objects of wrath.

  230. It's a pretty gloomy thing, isn't it?

  231. When we talk about where we once were, but in verse 4, everything

  232. changes. It says But because of his great

  233. love for us, God. But because of his great love

  234. for us, God. Who is rich in mercy, made us

  235. alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

  236. It is by grace you have been saved.

  237. Paul, understanding that spiritual life comes from God's

  238. grace. The Psalm is here depending upon

  239. that, he says. It's by grace you've been saved,

  240. he says. And God raised us up with Christ

  241. and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.

  242. In order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable

  243. riches of His grace expressed in His kindness to us in Christ

  244. Jesus, He. He reiterates it again in verse.

  245. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and

  246. this is not from yourselves. It is the gift of God, not by

  247. words. Why?

  248. So that no one can boast. We're God's workmanship created

  249. in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance

  250. for us to do. What is he saying here?

  251. Paul spent those 10 verses to tell you exactly what the

  252. psalmist is saying here. We must depend upon God's grace

  253. for spiritual life. And apart from God's grace, we

  254. are spiritually dead. We are children of Satan.

  255. We are followers of this world's system.

  256. We are under the wrath of a holy God.

  257. That is exactly what he just said and in order for us.

  258. To be saved from that, God must grace us with new life in

  259. Christ. Oh, it's a sad.

  260. Thing that there are many in the church who would like to argue

  261. against that Please take your arguments elsewhere.

  262. Scripture has spoken. We were dead spiritually, and by

  263. His grace God has made us alive in Christ Jesus.

  264. The end of the discussion the. Psalmist, understanding the

  265. importance of dependence upon God's grace in order to live, to

  266. live physically and to live spiritually.

  267. Why? Because without grace, you have

  268. neither. And so if you are alive today,

  269. may you thank God for His grace allowing you to live.

  270. If you are alive today and you are saved, you have been

  271. forgiven in Christ Jesus. Thank Him for the spiritual life

  272. that you have received in Christ because you once were dead.

  273. And then? In your life, depend upon His

  274. grace for everything He says. Do good to your servant and I

  275. will live. We see dependence upon God's

  276. grace in the area of life, physical and spiritual.

  277. But he doesn't stop there. He says I will obey your word.

  278. Let. Me just tell you this, this,

  279. this verse is probably better rendered like this.

  280. Let me live so that I can obey your word.

  281. Well, what a thought that the psalmist says.

  282. I I need your Grace to live both physically and spiritually.

  283. So that I can live to obey your word, because it is in obeying

  284. His word. And it is the whole reason for

  285. our existence. It is the whole reason that we

  286. have been born again, that we have been saved in Christ.

  287. It is for that whole reason. So that we can glorify God with

  288. our obedience. Remember what Paul said in

  289. Ephesians the 10th verse there in the in the 2nd chapter that

  290. we read. What did he say?

  291. That he prepared good works in advance for us to do those good

  292. works. All of his grace.

  293. We get to be obedient to the things that God has planned for

  294. our lives. To be obedient in what an honor

  295. and what a privilege that is. And we depend upon him to obey

  296. these things. The whole reason that we live is

  297. to obey. That's what the psalmist is

  298. saying about himself. He lived to obey.

  299. He did not obey to live. He lived to obey.

  300. Oh, I want you to see the difference.

  301. That's not just to play on words.

  302. Many people think that if I obey all of God's commands and He

  303. will see that I'm doing good, and He will grant to me eternal

  304. life, that's not grace. That's.

  305. Works. But the psalmist understands

  306. this, that I must depend upon God's grace.

  307. I must depend upon God's grace to live physically, spiritually.

  308. And I must depend upon God's grace to obey the things that he

  309. has in Christ crafted me to do, because it's He who's doing this

  310. good work in us. What a lesson for all of us to

  311. learn, to learn to obey God out of the appreciation for His

  312. grace, to know that He has granted us life and life eternal

  313. for the glory of God the Father by His grace.

  314. Not so that we can just abuse that grace.

  315. Isn't that what many people think?

  316. Many people think, well, I have grace, therefore I can indulge a

  317. little because of grace. And many people, unfortunately,

  318. in the modern church, that's how they live their lives.

  319. With the mentality of saying instead of asking for

  320. permission, I'll just ask God for forgiveness.

  321. Instead of looking at the word of God and saying God has

  322. already forbidden such things, I will ask God for his grace to

  323. obey such things. That's what the psalmist is

  324. doing here, different than we can even probably comprehend in

  325. our minds and in our day. He was simply living out of

  326. appreciation for the grace that he had received.

  327. He wasn't doing like those who Paul was concerned about when he

  328. said in Romans chapter 6. Verse one.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  329. What shall we say then? Shall we go on sinning so that

  330. grace may increase? Paul says by no means in verse 2

  331. we died to sin. How can we live in it any

  332. longer? Paul was saying.

  333. Grace is not something that ought to be abused.

  334. Grace is something that ought to be appreciated, and we can truly

  335. measure how much. We appreciate God's grace by the

  336. obedience that comes out of our lives because if you truly

  337. trusted God's grace and saving you and giving you life, you

  338. will then truly trust God's grace to teach you how to

  339. obediently live that life. You will be living a life, an

  340. obedient life toward God because you love him.

  341. Why? Because he first loved you.

  342. Well, I'm so thankful that in our church, many people

  343. understand that principle. We don't do things that we do so

  344. that God will look at us and say, I love them because they do

  345. good things. No, the good that they do is

  346. because of the grace of God, because he's loved them and they

  347. love Him. And they prove that love by

  348. their obedience. They prove that love by

  349. continually depending upon God's grace in their lives, even

  350. beyond initial salvation. They live obedient lives because

  351. they love God. It's not not what Jesus said in

  352. John chapter 14 verse 15. It's very familiar to you, I

    John 14:15

  353. know, but I'll read it again. If you love me, you will obey

  354. what I command. Doesn't get any simpler than

  355. that, does it? And so many times we're afraid

  356. to to reverse that and give the negative side of that.

  357. But here's the reverse negative of that.

  358. If you don't obey what I command, you don't.

  359. Love me when we say it like that, that becomes quite

  360. offensive, doesn't it? But that is exactly what Jesus

  361. said. And if we're going to obey Him,

  362. we're going to have to trust in His grace to do and to live

  363. according to His will for our life.

  364. Not just trusting grace and salvation, but every day, Lord,

  365. grace me with the strength from Your Spirit.

  366. Grace me with the promises from Your word.

  367. Grace me with whatever I need to live in obedience to You.

  368. Why would you even pray that? Because I love you so much.

  369. Because You first love me. And I want to bring glory and

  370. not shame and reproach to You. I want to bring glory to your

  371. name. I don't want someone saying and

  372. you call yourself a Christian because you do bear his name if

  373. you're in Christ. I want people to take note that

  374. there's something different, and that difference is the grace of

  375. God, the grace of God that gives me life.

  376. Physically. Spiritually.

  377. The grace of God that allows me to obey Him in every area of my

  378. life, showing my appreciation for the fact that He loved me

  379. when I was unlovable and wretched and sinful.

  380. So Psalmist gets that. Do good to your servant and I

  381. will. Live, I will obey your word.

  382. Do good, your servant. Be gracious to me now.

  383. Live, and I'll live to obey your word.

  384. Oh, what a message that could be, A message in and of itself.

  385. But he doesn't stop. This is just the first part of

  386. this eight verse stanza. He goes to the next thing after

  387. seeing that if we're truly depending upon God, we will be

  388. be depending upon His grace both to live and to obey.

  389. He moves into what's next there, that if there is true dependence

  390. on God, there will be dependence upon God's direction, His

  391. direction in our life. Watch what he says verse. 18 He

  392. says, Open my eyes, that I may see wonderful things in your

  393. law. Again, using one of those

  394. synonyms for the word of God, he says that I may see wonderful

  395. things in your law. He says I'm a stranger on earth

  396. and do not hide your commands from me.

  397. What is he talking about here? He is talking about dependence

  398. upon God for direction in our lives.

  399. First in the form of revelation. Look at this illumination that

  400. we see here. He says open my eyes that I may

  401. see wonderful things in your law, leading us to know this,

  402. that the psalmist knows unless God opens his eyes to see these

  403. wonderful things, he cannot see them.

  404. That's why it's so important that when we approach the word

  405. of God, Lord, open my eyes. Give me eyes to see.

  406. Give me eyes to see your truth. Illuminate your word for me.

  407. Give me the revelation that you desire to reveal to me from

  408. Scripture and into my life. Show me those wonderful thing.

  409. Isn't it sad that so many people approach the word of God as if

  410. it's not wonderful? It's just this book of rules

  411. governs my life, tells me what to do and how I have to do it,

  412. and I don't want anybody telling me what to do.

  413. The psalmist says don't let me have that attitude.

  414. Open my eyes so that I can see how wonderful Your law is, so

  415. that I can value your every statute, your every precept,

  416. your every command, to know that there is a reason higher than me

  417. as to which I have received this, and to trust in you and to

  418. obey you in all manner. He's depending upon God's

  419. direction in the form of revelation.

  420. Where would we be had God not revealed things to us?

  421. He's trusting God for the quickening of the once dead

  422. eyes. Oh, you remember when you

  423. couldn't see Christ, you couldn't see your need for

  424. Christ, you couldn't see your need for forgiveness and eternal

  425. life, But then God opened your eyes and how did he do that?

  426. Someone preached or someone spoke to you the word of God,

  427. because it's impossible for you to be saved without the word of

  428. God. So many people going around

  429. sharing their testimony. I'm giving my story.

  430. Stop giving your story. Teach the Word of God.

  431. You only talk about your story when it's applicable to whatever

  432. it is that you're teaching in the Word of God.

  433. Because when you teach the Word of God, what happens?

  434. Eyes are opened. Centers are drawn to Christ.

  435. Faith and repentance happens. Dead souls are quickened to new

  436. life. Dead eyes begin to see things

  437. that they've never seen before. Oh, what wonderful things that

  438. we see now that we once did not see prior to God opening our

  439. eyes to see them. Look at the psalmist's

  440. dependence upon that. Lord.

  441. Open my eyes. I'm like a little puppy who

  442. can't see. I need You to open my eyes so

  443. that I can see. He's trusting in the power of

  444. God to reveal Himself and His instructions to Him.

  445. And again, he says they're wonderful things.

  446. They're not burdensome, they're not difficult, they're not

  447. impossible. Everything that God has

  448. commanded of us in Christ Jesus, those things are possible for us

  449. to live out under the power of the Holy Spirit by the guidance

  450. and revelation and illumination of the Word of God.

  451. He's not put a burden on you. He's lifting a burden off of

  452. you. The psalmist gets this.

  453. He's depending upon God's direction in the form of

  454. revelation, not only that, in the form of wisdom or insight.

  455. So we have illumination, that revelation, but we also have

  456. that insight, that wisdom. Watch what he says.

  457. Do not hide your commands from me.

  458. Why? Because I'm a stranger on the

  459. earth. What does that have to do with

  460. anything? That's what we would say in our

  461. modern church culture, right? The reason that we would say

  462. this is because we're not really strangers on this earth most of

  463. the time. In fact, departing from this

  464. earth is our greatest fear. It should not be so in the

  465. church because as the believer who has confessed Christ as Lord

  466. and Savior as he thinks about eternity, it ought to excite

  467. him. It ought to excite her.

  468. You ought to say, when I leave this world, I am finally going

  469. home to a familiar country with a familiar king and familiar

  470. people. That ought to be our desire.

  471. That was the desire of the psalmist.

  472. He said I'm a stranger on earth, and we know this.

  473. He wasn't always a stranger, and one time he probably felt quite

  474. at home here on the earth, just as I once did, living a life of

  475. sin. But he says I'm a stranger on

  476. earth, do not hide your commands from me.

  477. So he says, open my eyes, give me illumination, give me

  478. revelation into truth. And then he says, give me

  479. insight and wisdom from that truth.

  480. Proverbs 26 that's for the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth

  481. come knowledge and understanding.

  482. Proverbs 910 it says to fear the Lord or the fear of the Lord,

  483. excuse me, is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy

  484. one is understanding well, they're in Proverbs we see some

  485. understanding into God's wisdom and insight that he gives that

  486. we ought to depend upon for direction in our lives.

  487. It's sad to think that so many people even in the church aren't

  488. depending upon God for wisdom and insight and direction in

  489. their life. They only run to God when their

  490. plans fall. Through.

  491. Haven't we all been guilty of that?

  492. We had it all mapped out nice and neatly and it just didn't

  493. work out the way we planned. And so then and only then do we

  494. run to God and depend upon Him for direction.

  495. And you deal with all the heartache and all the pain of

  496. trying to do things on your own. All those years.

  497. And some of us, we live the consequence of that forever in

  498. this life. The psalmist understanding God's

  499. wisdom, his insight and the importance of that.

  500. Even Peter understood the importance of the insight that

  501. you receive from God's Word. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  502. Even John gives Peter credit, which is interesting because you

  503. you remember the race to the tomb.

  504. John wanted everybody to know. About that race, not the

  505. competition that was going on between the two.

  506. But he records Peter here in John chapter 6 verse 67, when

    John 6:67

  507. many were departing from Christ and abandoning Christ.

  508. Christ asked this question, he said.

  509. You do not want to leave too, do you, Jesus?

  510. Asked the 12. Then Simon Peter jumped up with

  511. the right answer. He's Lord, he said.

  512. Lord to him. Shall we go?

  513. You have. The words of eternal.

  514. Life. What was Peter doing?

  515. He was valuing the wisdom from the word of God, because Christ

  516. was the word made of flesh living among them, and he valued

  517. this. He depended upon.

  518. He said, where else can we go? We have to.

  519. Depend upon you, you're the only one who has the words of life

  520. and life eternal. What did he understand?

  521. We need God's wisdom. We need God's wisdom.

  522. Navigate through this dark and evil and wicked world and the

  523. culture that we live in. It's why in Proverbs you see

  524. that nugget of wisdom there in chapter 3, verse 5.

  525. Some of you have memorized this since you were children, but it

  526. says trust in the Lord with all your heart.

  527. Lean not on your own understanding.

  528. He goes on to say, in all your ways, acknowledge Him and He

  529. will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes.

  530. Fear the Lord and shun evil. Well, that's the one that we

  531. often times leave out of our memorization of that particular

  532. passage of scripture. Don't be wise in your own eyes.

  533. Well, how many times have we suffered heartache and pain

  534. simply because we used our own wisdom, thinking that we had it

  535. all figured out, only to realize we had nothing figured out at

  536. all? Let us depend on God's

  537. direction, His wisdom, and lean not on onto our own

  538. understanding. Spurgeon.

  539. Said this, he said. While we wander here, we can

  540. endure all the ills of this foreign land with patience, if

  541. the Word of God is applied to our hearts by the Spirit of God.

  542. But if the heavenly things which make for our peace were hid from

  543. our eyes, we should be in an evil case.

  544. In fact, we should be at sea without a compass.

  545. Now pay attention to what Spurgeon is.

  546. Saying or he's using, he's using illustrations from his day.

  547. For a sea captain to go out upon the seas without a compass would

  548. be foolish because eventually he's going to get so far out

  549. into the ocean that all he sees is ocean.

  550. There is no shoreline, there is no mountain peak, there is

  551. nothing. There is no lighthouse.

  552. There is nothing for him to receive direction.

  553. Spurgeon says that that if we were to have the wisdom in the

  554. direction of God's word removed from us, we would be like that

  555. sea captain without a compass out on the sea.

  556. He goes on and he says in a desert without a guide.

  557. Well the same goes for the desert.

  558. When you eventually get to the heart of the desert, all you see

  559. is dunes and all you see is sand and it all looks the same.

  560. And unless you have a trained guide to get you through that,

  561. the person who knows where all of the the Oasis are, where you

  562. can receive a drink of water and the correct path to get to your

  563. destination, you will face death.

  564. Spurgeon goes on to say not only on the sea without a compass or

  565. in a desert without a guide, he says in an enemy's country

  566. without a friend. What is he saying?

  567. He's saying we need God's wisdom and insight to navigate this

  568. crazy world. So many times we're not leaning

  569. on the wisdom and insight. From the Lord and from His word

  570. to navigate this crazy world. We lean on the thought wisdom

  571. and thought insight of this world to learn how to navigate

  572. this world. It's the blind leading the

  573. blind. But the psalmist here says, no,

  574. I'm a stranger on earth. What is he saying?

  575. I need you, Lord. This is not my home.

  576. I do not know my way around this wicked place any longer and so

  577. please do not hide your commands from me.

  578. Why we we learned this in the intro message.

  579. His word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

  580. The psalmist is simply saying I have no direction if I don't

  581. have your wisdom and insight. Oh, I would to God that the

  582. church understood that, that you would stop listening to the

  583. foolishness of the world, That you would stop listening to the

  584. foolishness, foolishness of the psychology of man, and you would

  585. trust in the Word of God and the Word of God alone for all wisdom

  586. and all direction in your life. You say that's impossible.

  587. No, you've already given up. It's not impossible.

  588. The Word contains for us all things that we need for life and

  589. godliness. God is not hiding these things

  590. from us. We are simply ignoring them,

  591. refusing to allow the Word to be our compass on the high seas and

  592. our guide in the desert and our stranger in a foreign land.

  593. But we need it. We need to learn to depend upon

  594. direction from God's Word in the form of His wisdom and His

  595. insight that He gives us. God is faithful to give us the

  596. wisdom that we need. Is that not what James says

  597. about our Lord? He says this in verse 5 of

  598. chapter 1 in James epistle. He says if any of you lacks

  599. wisdom he should ask God who gives generously to all without

  600. finding fault and it will be given to him.

  601. So we ask God for wisdom. Where do we find that answer?

  602. We find it in the pages of Scripture Church.

  603. Please understand that He has spoken to us.

  604. His Word is canonized. It is final.

  605. And in here we have all of the instructions, all of the wisdom

  606. and the insight that we need. And James says the first step is

  607. admitting that you need wisdom if you have it all figured out

  608. and you know everything. And we know that there's plenty

  609. of those people. You have it all figured out and

  610. you know everything. And you, you are all.

  611. Wise in your own mind, you are not depending upon wisdom that

  612. comes from the Lord. Isn't it interesting how so many

  613. quote educated people are atheists because they simply

  614. claim to be wiser or smarter than God?

  615. They've got it all figured out. And God says about them that a

  616. fool has said in his heart that there is no God, the man with

  617. all the intellect in the world, who's done all the research and

  618. come to the conclusion through all of his years of research

  619. that there is no God. God says that man is a fool.

  620. Because he knows nothing about true wisdom.

  621. True wisdom comes from the Word of God.

  622. When God speaks, it is an all wise God speaking nothing but

  623. pure wisdom, the purest of gold. So are you depending upon that?

  624. Are you or do you seek your answers elsewhere?

  625. Church, please listen to me when you go through crisis.

  626. If your first instinct is not to go to the Scriptures to seek

  627. God's thoughts on this particular subject, you are not

  628. depending upon God. Many times we don't go to God's

  629. Word until after we've gotten everybody else's opinion.

  630. And here's the thing, everybody else's opinion really doesn't

  631. matter. The psalmist gets this.

  632. I'm a stranger on earth. Do not hide your commands for

  633. me, he says. If you hid your commands for me,

  634. I would have no direction in this life.

  635. What would happen if the believers in our time lived like

  636. that? The only direction that I have

  637. and the only direction that I need is found in the words of

  638. God. Oh, wouldn't we value the

  639. Scriptures a little bit more each day?

  640. We value the Scriptures a little bit more in our lives as we are

  641. sanctified and we become more like Christ depending on them,

  642. depending on God's direction that is revealed in them.

  643. We see the psalmist here giving us encouragement to do that.

  644. Thirdly, there's true dependence on God.

  645. There will be, as we have seen, dependence upon God's grace,

  646. dependence upon God's direction, and thirdly, dependence upon God

  647. constantly. I love that this is included in

  648. here because it helps me, because I, like you, am an

  649. inconsistent human. But we can all pray as David

  650. once prayed. Create a steadfast spirit in me,

  651. oh Lord, make me constant. Make me consistent.

  652. If there's true dependence on God, there will be dependence

  653. upon God constantly. Look what he says verse 20.

  654. My soul is consumed with longing for your laws.

  655. At all times? At all times?

  656. What kind of dependence is this where you would depend upon God

  657. and His Word constantly? Well, first I want you to see

  658. what the psalmist says about it. It's a soul dependence.

  659. It's deeper than the inconsistencies of your mind or

  660. your human habits. It is a dependence that comes

  661. from your soul, he said. My soul is consumed with longing

  662. for your laws. And a believer's soul should

  663. crave God's Word like a newborn baby craves his or her mother's

  664. milk. In fact, Peter makes this

  665. illustration in first Peter too, where he says this in verse 2

  666. like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk so that buy it.

  667. You may grow up in your salvation now that you have

  668. tasted that the Lord is good. The sad thing is, is so many.

  669. Of us just stop on that first taste that salvation.

  670. God is good and he's good because he saved me.

  671. Then we don't crave him from our soul like that baby craves its

  672. mother's milk. Church, listen to me.

  673. Just as that baby must be fed, just as we as adults must be

  674. fed. I'm I'm sure some of you already

  675. here in your stomach growl saying when is this going to be

  676. over so I can eat? None of you look like you're on

  677. the brink of starvation. So I think you can handle the

  678. next two hours until I'm done. But here we see a soul depending

  679. and longing upon the Word of God all the time, like a baby

  680. depends upon his mother for his nourishment, for his food.

  681. Your soul needs to be fed. It must be nourished.

  682. You know what? All the problems that people

  683. like to talk about in the church, the church has this

  684. problem and the church has that problem.

  685. And we all could be guilty of pointing out those things.

  686. But let me. Just tell you this as a whole,

  687. you know what the church's problem is?

  688. They're malnourished. They're malnourished at best.

  689. On a Sunday morning, a church might get a little snack.

  690. Never to be fed into their souls, never to be challenged in

  691. the depth of their very being by the Word of God.

  692. The psalmist says that my soul is consumed with longing for

  693. your laws, that that, that is what my soul is all about.

  694. Feasting from your table, from your truth, from your Word.

  695. There ought to be that deep yearning for God's people to be

  696. filled with His Word. Is that true in your life?

  697. Is that true in your deepest and inmost part of your being?

  698. Because that's really what you are.

  699. You are what you are and your deepest.

  700. And inmost being well, I'm thankful that God has raised up

  701. people who that's true and is raising up more people to who

  702. that's true who longed to have their souls fed.

  703. I'm thankful to be able to preach to a congregation that

  704. most of the time I see the tops of your head as you were looking

  705. along in Scripture, as you were taking notes.

  706. I'm thankful that there's not someone in the back tapping

  707. their watch saying we got to go leave when you have to leave.

  708. But you wouldn't leave halfway through lunch if you were still

  709. hungry. And your soul is hungry and you

  710. need to realize that. And your soul is for is hungry

  711. for nothing other than the truth that comes from the Word of God,

  712. and it must be fed. There's so many times church

  713. remains malnourished, not hungry for the word of God, not

  714. feasting on the word of God, or if.

  715. They do receive them that food, they become anorexic.

  716. They walk out the door bulimic or spiritually, they walk out

  717. the door and then they vomit up what they just in took, never to

  718. bring in the nourishment of their soul.

  719. They forget about it before they leave this parking lot, never

  720. one time meditating on it ever, ever again.

  721. It's not feasting on it, it's just snacking on it.

  722. I pray that you see your soul needs the Word of God and that

  723. your dependence upon God's Word in the depths of your being

  724. would grow even this very moment.

  725. The psalmist here had a soul dependence, but also a steadfast

  726. dependence. He said at all times, Oh, what a

  727. heart. Shouldn't that be our heart at

  728. all times? A longing for the Word of God,

  729. and a longing for God through His Word.

  730. Can't be a seasonal thing well, you know what I'm talking about

  731. and most of you live a cyclical Christian life you have to go to

  732. the next cool thing to get fired up now we've trained kids

  733. unfortunately this way in many church circles we take them to

  734. some hype camp they. Get hyped up about something.

  735. They think it's Jesus, but they really don't know.

  736. But they call it Jesus because they don't have anything else to

  737. call it. And they did sing a song, I

  738. think, about Jesus and said something about the Bible.

  739. But anyway, so they get hyped up for a minute, but it doesn't

  740. last. But the ladies go to retreat, or

  741. the men's go men go to retreat. And there's really no steadfast

  742. dependence upon the word of God at all times.

  743. And So what happens? They have to go from thing to

  744. thing. Oh, let's go to the next cool

  745. thing. Let's go to the next hype thing.

  746. Let's go to the next exciting thing.

  747. That's why we have a lot of church hoppers as well.

  748. That's why the seeker sensitive movement is is so prevalent in

  749. America. Is there?

  750. They're experts at giving you the next cool thing, right?

  751. You want a roller coaster? We'll roll a roller coaster

  752. coaster across the stage. You want flames and fire?

  753. We'll do that. You want a guy to jump out of a

  754. parachute? Yeah, anything but preaching the

  755. word of God. Give us anything but true

  756. sustenance for our soul. We wonder why they don't have a

  757. steadfast dependence. They're getting filled with junk

  758. food all the time. Isn't it true?

  759. You can fill your kids up with junk food, but it gives them no

  760. nourishment. The psalmist here says, I, I, I,

  761. I want to be steadfast in my dependence upon your laws.

  762. I'm longing in my soul for them at all times.

  763. He's not settling for a partial longing and a partial feeling.

  764. He's depending upon God and depending upon God's Word truly

  765. and constantly in his life. I know it's easy to depend upon

  766. God in certain situations, isn't it?

  767. When the bottom falls out, there's no other answer.

  768. It's not what the psalmist is saying.

  769. He said at all times, his church, let me tell you this,

  770. when you don't think you need God, that's when you need him

  771. the most. When you think you got it all

  772. figured out and all everything's come together, that's when you

  773. need him the most, Salma said. At all times.

  774. At all times with consistency and steadfastness.

  775. Not some seasonal spell or some seasonal longing or trend.

  776. That would be like a little baby who only nurses at its mother's

  777. breast once a week. With no desire or longing for

  778. anything more. I know this.

  779. I don't know every mother in the room, but I know this.

  780. Every mother in the room would be wanting to go to the doctor

  781. as soon as possible to get their baby checked out.

  782. They would go there and they said something's wrong.

  783. My baby's not taking to my milk. My baby is not nursing properly.

  784. Why? Because the mother knows how

  785. urgent that is. If they don't get the

  786. nourishment that they need, they will not thrive.

  787. And if they do not thrive, they will die.

  788. Church, listen to me. We look at that and common sense

  789. tells us, man, then that would be a problem.

  790. Being in the church so many times, we don't have a steadfast

  791. dependence upon God and upon His word in our lives.

  792. We come once a week. We come once a week to suckle

  793. from the supply and then don't think it's a problem that we

  794. don't have a deep longing in our soul the rest of the week.

  795. Christian It ought not be so. It's what causes malnourishment

  796. in churches. The church is full of

  797. malnourished babies with no real or constant appetite for the

  798. things of God and for the Word of God.

  799. Unfortunately, many of them don't even seem to think that

  800. there is a problem. There's a problem.

  801. Why? Because Jesus said there was a

  802. problem. Matthew chapter 4, verse four.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  803. Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that

  804. proceeds from the mouth of God. Christian, are you feeding your

  805. soul? Are you steadfastly depending

  806. upon the nourishment from the Word of God that we receive as

  807. His children because we need it? You need a steadfast dependence

  808. upon God's Word. So we see the psalmist here in

  809. this Third Point point and his dependence upon God constantly.

  810. My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.

  811. Not on a Sunday morning, Not on a Thursday night men's Bible

  812. study, Not during your D group during the week, ladies.

  813. Not during the student ministry on Sunday nights, not the

  814. children's ministry at all times.

  815. Maybe we have a dependence that's constant.

  816. Next, and finally, we see this. If there's true dependence on

  817. God, there will be dependence upon God's refining, his

  818. refining work in our lives. Look what the psalmist says in

  819. the last few verses. He says in verse 21, you rebuke

  820. the arrogant. How does he know this?

  821. He was once arrogant. He knows how it goes.

  822. He said you rebuke the arrogant who are cursed and who's strayed

  823. from your commands. How does he know this?

  824. He's strayed from his commands, removed from his scorn and

  825. contempt. For I keep your statutes, since

  826. others have their opinions about me, but the truth is I keep your

  827. statutes. He's calling himself to account

  828. here. He says in 23, though rulers sit

  829. together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your

  830. decrees. Your statues are my delight.

  831. They are my counselors. We see here one who is truly

  832. depending upon God does not. Let.

  833. That dependence end with salvation.

  834. They trust God for continual refining in their lives as they

  835. are being sanctified. He approaches the work of that

  836. refinement, that sanctification, from two places here, one God's

  837. work and changing us. Anyone here thankful that God

  838. does change us, that we are new creations in Christ?

  839. And we are. Truly transformed, He depends

  840. first on God's work in changing us and then God's work in

  841. counseling us. Because we need both, don't we?

  842. I need the changing power of God, and I need His constant

  843. counsel in my life. The psalmist here showing his

  844. dependence upon that refining. Let's look at the first one,

  845. refining through that change, through God's transformation.

  846. In fact, we know that Romans 829 says for those God foreknew, He

  847. also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son.

  848. He might be the first born among many brothers.

  849. What? What is that saying?

  850. It's saying this, that God is transforming and conforming us

  851. into the image and the likeness of Christ, and that is God's

  852. will for our lives. There is a refining that is

  853. going on. If there is not a refining that

  854. is going on, you are not yet born again.

  855. Because the moment that you were born again, that refining in

  856. your life begins, the sanctification process is

  857. already in motion. You were becoming more like.

  858. Christ, you're being transformed.

  859. It speaks of that that Paul speaks of in Philippians chapter

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  860. 1. This good work that he'll carry

  861. to completion. So He is doing this good work in

  862. US, refining us, transforming us.

  863. We must depend upon God to do this, trusting in that

  864. constantly. Why?

  865. Philippians 213 says. For it is God who works in you

  866. to will and to act according to His good purpose.

  867. God is doing this work. We must depend upon Him to do

  868. the work that He has sought to do, and that is to refined you,

  869. to make you what He desires for you to be.

  870. To trust God, as the Psalmist is doing here, to move us from

  871. arrogant and rebellious to humble and obedient in our

  872. lives. Oh, just as I've already said, I

  873. guarantee the Psalmist knew the danger of arrogance.

  874. He knew that the danger that it would bring upon the life of

  875. anyone who walked in arrogance. And he knew that he must trust

  876. in God to change him and to transform him from what he once

  877. was into what God desires him to be.

  878. What does God desire him to be obedient to his commands, to not

  879. stray from them, to walk in consistency with the Word of

  880. God. So he's trusting God for this.

  881. He's not only trusting God for that, he's trusting God to keep

  882. him firm and focused on his word.

  883. Look at 23, he says. Remove from me scorn and

  884. contempt, for I keep your statutes, he said.

  885. There are people saying ugly things about me, he says, but I

  886. keep your statues. Look, keep me firm.

  887. Don't let me get focused on these things.

  888. Verse 23, same thing. The rulers sit together and

  889. slander me. Your servant will meditate on

  890. your decrees. You know what his answer is?

  891. It's not to seek revenge on his critics.

  892. His answer is to plant himself in the word of God and to be

  893. focused on that and to be firm in that and that to be his hope.

  894. So many times the critics have just just totally derailed many

  895. people, haven't they? Many pastors quit ministry

  896. because the critics became too much for them to handle.

  897. They did not meditate in the Word of God.

  898. They did not focus on the Word of God.

  899. They did not trust in God's power through the Word to just

  900. refine them and to carry them through this process and to

  901. deliver them and to defend them. Not only does that.

  902. Happen to pastors, it happens to husbands, and it happens to

  903. wives. When marriage gets difficult,

  904. why bother? No one cares anyway.

  905. You can't listen to the negative critics, even if they belong to

  906. the home that you live in. You answer to a holy God.

  907. You were being refined by and through His Word.

  908. Stay firmly focused in His Word. Look at your life, husbands, are

  909. you doing what the Word of God says for you to do as a husband,

  910. to love your wives as Christ loved the church, and are you

  911. giving yourself for her? Then keep doing that.

  912. Wives, are you submitting to your husband in everything?

  913. Yes. Then keep doing that so that you

  914. can say, as the psalmist says here, I've kept your statutes in

  915. regard to this and let God do everything else.

  916. Just stop. Don't get in His way.

  917. Just continue to keep trusting in him to keep you firm and

  918. focused to continue to transform you.

  919. I wish I had a dollar for every time I had a wife come to me

  920. burdened for her husband, wanting to change him because

  921. he's not the godly husband that she wants him to.

  922. Be he's not the godly husband that God wants him to be.

  923. That ought to be your chief concern, and you want to go to

  924. God on your knees and say, God, let me pray for him like I

  925. should, and let me do what Scripture says and win him

  926. without words through my godly example and through my prayer

  927. husband. Same for you.

  928. Trust in the Word of God to do what the Word of God does.

  929. The Word of God refines and it transforms.

  930. The psalmist understanding this completely, the transformative

  931. power of God's Word, he's depending upon it so that this

  932. process of refinement continues in his life.

  933. With the trust in that in our lives, with the trust in that in

  934. the lives of others. For example, that husband that

  935. you want to fix, or that wife that you want to fix.

  936. God is the only one who has the power to transform lives.

  937. Trust him, hold on to the promises of scripture and pray

  938. through this and God will show you just how faithful he is.

  939. Psalmist here. Not looking at the negative side

  940. of things, but focusing only on God and his word.

  941. His mind being constantly renewed through the scriptures.

  942. Paul talked about this in Romans 12, doesn't he?

  943. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be

  944. transformed by the renewing of your mind.

  945. Then you will be able to test and improve what God's will is,

  946. is good, pleasing and perfect will.

  947. How's your mind going to be transformed?

  948. Your grandma nailed it and she said garbage in, garbage out

  949. right? You didn't know how proverbial

  950. she really was. Instead of putting the things of

  951. this world into your mind constantly, again to put the

  952. things of the word into your mind constantly and watch and

  953. trust in God's refining power as He transforms you by that very

  954. word that he has spoken. So we see there is psalmist here

  955. depending upon God's refining, refining through God's

  956. transformation within refining through God's counsel.

  957. He says there in that last verse 24, your statutes are my

  958. delight. They are my counselors.

  959. What's he doing here? He's valuing the word of God.

  960. He's valuing the opinion of God. He's valuing sound counsel that

  961. comes from the. Scriptures Again, Christian,

  962. listen to me. Don't let the last place that

  963. you look for advice be your Bible.

  964. It ought to be the first place, Husbands, it ought to be before

  965. you talk to your wives. Wives, it ought to be before you

  966. talk to your husband. You ought to go to the Word of

  967. God, seek your answers there, then share them with one another

  968. at the treasure that you have found in His Word and the wisdom

  969. and the counsel that you need for that situation.

  970. You're going to have to value God's opinion more than you

  971. value man's opinion. This is we saw in our scripture

  972. reading in verse 5 of Psalm 146. Blessed are those whose help is

  973. the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.

  974. Where do you get your help? From Where?

  975. Do you get your counsel from Again, you're you're foolish to

  976. get your counsel from the world. If you claim to be a Christian,

  977. your counsel should come from the Word, not from this.

  978. Wicked world. They're just most of the time

  979. going to tell you what you want to hear.

  980. Anyone here thankful when the Word of God tells you opposite

  981. of what you wanted to hear? But it's what you needed to hear

  982. and it's what your life needed so that you would continue to be

  983. conformed to the image of Christ, that refining would

  984. continue to happen in your life. You heard it, it hurt, but isn't

  985. He so faithful that when it even when it does hurt, He comes and

  986. He heals you. He heals you from your hurt and

  987. He gives you the strength and the direction that you need

  988. because His Word is that double edged sword.

  989. It does cut and it serves its purpose.

  990. But God is always faithful to heal you and to strengthen you

  991. and to raise you up in obedience to that which you have received.

  992. Are you valuing God's Word as sound counsel?

  993. The psalmist did. Are you receiving God's Word as

  994. sound counsel? What many people like to do

  995. today is they like the world's ideology.

  996. They like to follow the world's psychology and their philosophy.

  997. We as Christians are called to a different place.

  998. We're called to receive God's Word as sound counsel and then

  999. to rest in God's Word as sound counsel.

  1000. He's spoken on it. It's done.

1001. There's no need to look anywhere else.

1002. You don't have to go to Doctor Phil, to Doctor Oz, to Oprah, to

1003. whatever doctor's coming down the pipe.

1004. He's going to tell you some kind of secular, worldly thinking.

1005. No, God Himself, the sovereign God over all, has spoken.

1006. But are we listening? Are we what?

1007. Resting in that to which he said Psalm 16, seven.

1008. It says, I will praise the Lord who counsels me even at night.

1009. My heart instructs me. What is He saying at night?

1010. I'm afraid when I don't know what tomorrow holds.

1011. I'm trusting in God's Word. I'm not trusting in my feelings.

1012. I'm not trusting in my circumstance or my situation.

1013. I am trusting and resting in the counsel of God's Word.

1014. I don't know how a person goes to sleep at night without the

1015. promises of God. That could be a very scary

1016. thing, couldn't it, if you didn't know the promises of God.

1017. What. What happens if I don't wake up?

1018. Here's the thing. I know exactly what happens if I

1019. don't wake up. What happens if I leave here

1020. today and this is the last day that I.

1021. Spend on Earth. I know exactly what happens.

1022. How do I know that? Not because someone in this

1023. world revealed it to me, Because the Word of God reveals it to

1024. me. The Word of God is my counselor.

1025. I hope because of His Word. His Word defines us.

1026. Wasn't it true? The more that we go to His Word

1027. for counsel, the more refined we become, the more sanctified we

1028. become. Just as Jesus pray, sanctify

1029. them by truth. Your Word is truth.

1030. Then before you know it, you've learned to trust in the Word of

1031. God and nothing else. May we be those kind of people,

1032. the Psalmist here, not trusting in the opinions and the

1033. philosophies of man, but in the very words of an all wise, all

1034. knowing God. So true dependence upon God will

1035. depend upon His power and Word to refine us and to sanctify us

1036. in our lives. So we ask that.

1037. Question Are you depending upon God?

1038. Is it marked by dependence upon God's grace, dependence upon

1039. God's direction, dependence upon God constantly, and dependence

1040. upon God's refining continually in your life?

1041. Are you trusting and depending upon Him?

1042. Believer, are you? For everything, Everything is

1043. the psalmist displayed here. From life to salvation to

1044. sanctification to daily direction and wisdom in your

  1045. life. Are you?

1046. I would ask that you not answer that question quickly or

1047. hastily. Now you really look at your life

1048. in light of what we've seen today in the Word, and you come

1049. up with that answer truthfully to the unbeliever who is here

1050. today, who crept in. You've not yet depended upon God

1051. at square 1. You've not yet depended upon God

1052. to save your soul through the Lord Jesus Christ.

1053. Therefore, I know that you're not depending upon God truly in

1054. any other area of your life, because you must first depend

1055. upon Christ, the One who God sent, His only begotten Son, who

1056. died in the place of all sinners who will believe and trust in

1057. Him as Lord and Savior who? Depend upon him.

1058. More than they depend upon water and more than they depend upon

1059. air, they depend upon Him for eternal life, eternal salvation.

1060. And so I ask those who don't know Christ, have you ever

1061. depended upon Him? If you have not, your journey

1062. depending upon God has not yet begun.

1063. But let me give you some good news.

1064. It can begin today. It can begin today as He opens

1065. your eyes to the truth that you are a Sinner and you are in need

1066. of a Savior, that Christ is that only Savior and you must depend

1067. upon Him. There is no other name given

1068. under heaven whereby men must be saved other than the name of

1069. Jesus. Would you call on Him today?

1070. Would you depend on Jesus to forgive you and to cleanse you

1071. of all of your sin, to give you eternal life that He and He

1072. alone can give because He is the resurrection and the life, just

1073. as John Chapter 11 tells us? And would you today begin to

    John 11 chapter mention

1074. depend on God, not only for salvation, but everything in

1075. your life? Let's pray together.

1076. Father, in the name of Jesus, we come to you, thanking you for

1077. your word, thanking you that it is true.

1078. Lord, I pray as we have been challenged today by your spirit

1079. through the preaching and the teaching of your Word.

1080. God, I pray that your will would be done now in the lives of

1081. those who have heard the message today, and that we would examine

1082. our lives and we would ask ourselves a difficult question.

1083. Are we truly depending upon God? I pray for the one who has not

1084. yet depended upon Jesus to save them from sin and the wrath that

1085. is to come. I pray that today they would

1086. call upon your name, Lord Jesus, to save them, and that you would

1087. give them the mercy and the grace that only you can give,

1088. and we'll give you all the glory for it in Jesus name, Amen.
