E13: Psalm 119: Living Life in the Light of God's Word - The Eternal Word Of God

Hey man, isn't it true that His word is a lamp unto our feet and

a light unto our paths? And I am thankful for that as I

know many of you are thankful of that as well.

I pray as we have been studying just that for the last several

months and looking at Psalm 119 in a series entitled Living Life

in the Light of God's Word. I pray that you are earnestly

and intentionally doing that, living your life in light of the

scriptures, in light of what the Word of God does truly proclaim

and declare. Ji Packer said this.

He said life must be seen and lived in the light of God's

Word. This and nothing less is true

religion. This and nothing less is true

religion meaning this if we are not living.

Our life. In light of God's Word, we are

not in reality living what the Christian life is intended for

us to live. So Ji Packer making that known.

So as we continue learning from Psalm 119 about what it means to

live life in light of God's Word, let us turn there in our

Bibles. But let us turn there with our

hearts and let us really see what the psalmist is going to

teach us today. Under the 12th letter of the

Hebrew alphabet, lamed. And that is the 12th letter.

And we know that there's going to be a corresponding 8 verses

as we have seen this pattern all throughout the 119th Psalm.

What He's going to be teaching us today and what He's going to

draw our attention to is the eternal Word of God, but more

accurately put the eternality of the Word of God.

And it's important that we understand that the Word of God

is eternal because God himself is eternal.

He's eternal in all of His facets.

He has no beginning, He has no end, He always has been.

That's why he can confidently declare in Revelation one verse

8, I am the alpha and the Omega says the Lord God who is and who

was and who is to come the Almighty.

He can declare that about himself that he is the one who

was, who is and who is to come that in eternity past he always

existed. Even now he exists and he will

exist for all eternity future. Now in knowing that we must also

learn that his word is eternal just the same.

And in seeing that we're going to see great benefits and and

great rewards that we reap from the eternality of the word of

God. Because I know you have to ask

yourself, why is this so important?

Why is it so important that we know that God's word is eternal?

Let me make this real clear for you today.

There are many things that you could hold in your hand.

You can hold a family member in your hand.

You can hold a young child in your hand.

You you could hold lots of money in your hand.

You can hold lots of gold in your hand.

You can hold your career in your hand.

You can hold many things in your hand.

And all of the things that you can hold in your hand are all

temporal and fleeting except for the very eternal Word of God.

And if we're going to really walk in the light of God's Word,

we're going to have have to understand the eternal nature of

the Word of God because it is in seeing that nature that we are

drawn to what God is truly going to teach us in His eternal Word.

And so let's read that together. Psalm 119, Psalm 119, and verse

89. And it says this.

Your word, O Lord, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens.

Your faithfulness continues through all generations.

You establish the earth, and it endures.

Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you.

If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished

in my affliction. I will never forget your

precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.

Save me, for I am yours. I have sought out your precepts.

The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder

your statutes to all perfection. I see a limit, but your commands

are boundless. Let's pray together.

Father, in the name of Jesus, we come to you now.

We thank You for Your eternal Word, but I know that many of us

have never given one thought to the eternality of the Word of

God. We've never given one meditation

to what that means to understand that.

Lord, I pray that You would change that now in this time

together, that we would see how important it is to understand

the eternal nature and essence of Your Word, to really and

truly appreciate and to understand that this Word that

we have in our hands was spoken from our eternal God in eternity

past and it will endure forever. Lord, thank You for the hope

that You give us in Your Word. Thank You for the encouragement

that we will receive today from just simply realizing and

knowing Your Word is everlasting.

It is eternal and it will endure no matter what comes along in

this world. Lord, we give you praise for it.

We pray for the unbeliever who's here today who does not know

you. God is your eternal word goes

forth. May you declare to them your

eternal promises to save sinners who call upon you.

Lord, may you by your Spirit regenerate them to new life and

faith today that they would do just that, repent of their sin

and to call on Jesus. The only hope that there is for

true salvation, for forgiveness and eternal life.

God, we pray that your will would be done.

Teach us, Holy Spirit now as we yield to you and we pray these

things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

So the Psalmist here giving great emphasis to the eternality

of God's holy Word. Again, to many of you you say

what does difference does? That make for me I will tell you

this when we began to understand that this is not just another

book that this is not just a bunch of black letters on white

pages that was written as any other book would be.

But when we really begin to understand the eternal nature of

the word of God and what it is that we truly do hold in our

hands every time we open it and we read it.

We really do bear with our eyes truth that God has spoken and

truth that is eternal because the very nature of God is

eternal. Therefore the very word of God

is eternal. And if it is eternal, I'm going

to get it out. We will then realize the

promises that it is His enduring word.

If it is eternal, it will always endure.

The psalmist understanding that today, as he says, your Word, oh

Lord, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens.

Nothing is going to shake the Word of God.

It will endure. He says your faithfulness

continues through all generations.

You establish the earth and it endures.

He's using that as an example. How did the Lord establish the

earth? By His Word and it endures.

Why? Because His Word is eternal and

His word endures. He says your laws endure to this

day, for all things serve you. Now watch this.

The laws endured to the day of the psalmist.

Did you know this? Thousands of years later,

they're still enduring. Why?

Because an eternal God spoke his eternal word and it will endure

forever. So the psalmist understands this

and I, I pray that we would understand this as well, that

his word is enduring. And it is enduring because it is

eternal in essence, just as we know God is eternal in His

essence. And when we look at the Word of

God, it endures because first, write it down.

It is eternally spoken, spoken from an eternal God who was not

like us and is not like us. He doesn't have a point in time

where He began and a point in time where He will end.

He's not like anything in all of His creation.

He always has been, always will be.

And so when He speaks, He speaks eternally and when He speaks, He

speaks from His mouth that cannot and does not lie

according to the word of God. His word is eternally spoken

because it is eternal in its very nature.

In fact, Matthew 24 verse 35, this is Jesus comments on it.

Matthew 24:35

He says heaven and earth will pass away.

Why? They're temporal.

He says heaven and earth as you know it are going to pass away,

but my words will never pass away.

Spoken from the very mouth of God.

Eternal words spoken from spoken from an eternal God, from his

eternal mouth. Jesus revealing to us that the

word of God is. Eternally spoken, therefore it

will endure the test of time. Scriptures are simply God's

eternal declarations, words and thoughts from His very mouth,

the very mouth of God Almighty, omnipotent, all powerful.

In fact, Second Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 and Speaking of the

2 Timothy 3:16

scripture, Paul says this all scripture is God breathed and is

useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training and

righteousness. Oh, please pay attention to that

phrase. God breathes because it's

impossible for you to hold your breath and at the same time

talk. And so when God spoke, he spoke

with his breath, that pneuma, the Spirit, and he spoke, and as

he spoke, he breathed his eternal word forth.

And the one true and eternal God breathed all of scripture into

existence. And this is so much more than

just being inspired by God. And yes, you're right if you say

that Scripture is inspired by God, but it's so much bigger

than that. And I want you to try to wrap

your small human minds around that.

That Scripture is not only just inspired by God, it's it's

grander than that. It is breathed out by God,

therefore it is eternally. Breathed from an eternal God.

So when we read the word of God, we read the very commands,

precepts, principles, instructions that the Eternal

God Almighty Creator of all. Things the Lord of all has

spoken forth. These are not books full of

suggestions from a well meaning person.

These are eternal words from an eternal God.

Therefore, they endure forever. That's why Jesus could

confidently say heaven and earth is going to pass away, but not

my words. My words will endure forever.

Or may we contemplate that when we read our Bible, when we study

the text, when we learn from it, well, may we contemplate that

today that you're not hearing the words of Kirk Hall this

morning as I read Scripture. You are hearing eternal words

from the throne of our eternal God.

And This is why God's Word should be treated with the

utmost seriousness and respect and reverence, because this

eternally spoken word is spoken from the very God who sought to

redeem you by the precious blood of His only begotten Son.

We ought to approach it with seriousness and reverence.

And I know many think this of me.

You're just a little too serious, right?

Because they want clowns at pub tables instead of preachers and

pulpits. They want people to entertain

them and to tell them funny stories and things that don't

matter. We have to approach the Word of

God with the seriousness and the reverence that it calls for.

If we really understand the eternality, the very nature of

the Scriptures, we're not going to clown around with them.

We're not going to play with them.

We're not going to mold them and transition them to fit our

lives. We're going to then.

Fit our lives to match the scriptures because an eternal

God has spoken on the matter, but far too often in our

society. Many who don't take the Word of

God seriously enough are leading people down paths of

destruction. Paul tells Timothy just this in

Second Timothy chapter 2 in regard to the eternal Word of

2 Timothy 2 · chapter mention

God, how we are to approach it. He says this in 215 a second

Timothy. Do your best to resent yourself

to God as one approved a worker who does not need to be ashamed

and who correctly handles the word of truth.

And I believe this 100%. To correctly handle the word of

truth is to see that it is truly the enduring eternal Word of

God. And that is where we must start

on this journey. Because if we don't start there

on this journey, we don't have the proper respect and reverence

that we need to have for the Word of God.

I can promise each of you this morning, I am not up here with

the serious demeanor because I take myself very seriously.

If you know me outside of the pulpit, I'm not that guy.

But I do take the Word of God very seriously.

I do approach it with reverence because I know exactly where it

came from. I know that it is eternally

spoken. I know that when I open the

pages of Scripture and I read those words, I read words

directly from my Lord and my God, and I respect that.

And I don't want to be ashamed, as Paul told Timothy, of someone

who doesn't handle the magnitude of that in a proper way or who

handles it too lightly. And so when we understand the

nature of God's Word, we'll approach it with the proper fear

that we ought to have for God. Desiring to be an approved

Workman, approaching the enduring Word of God.

Knowing this, that if I mishandle the Word of God, there

are promises in Scripture that discipline and judgment will

come upon me because I have mishandled the Word of God.

His Word will endure. And so we see it isn't the

enduring Word of God because it is eternally spoken.

Let us understand the nature. Of the scriptures, but not only

is the enduring word of God enduring because it's eternally

spoken, God has spoken it forth and there is no mistake in that

and it can't be taken back. The Word of God is eternally

standing because it is eternally spoken.

It is eternally standing, therefore it endures forever,

standing firm in the perfection of not this earth that is

imperfect because of sin, but standing in the perfection of

heaven. Look what the.

Psalmist says Your word, O Lord, is eternal.

It stands firm in the heaven. It's there in the heavens where

the word is declared, where it stands not standing in the

fallenness and the imperfection of man with standing in the

heavens. And we can all poll one another

today and we would all come to the conclusion, do you believe

that heaven is a place of perfection?

We would all have to say yes. Do you believe it is a place of

holiness? Yes.

Do you believe it's a place of reverence?

Yes. You believe it's a place where?

All creatures there fear the Lord.

Yes, we would all agree to that, because Scripture declares that.

And so when He says that your word is eternal, it stands firm

in the heavens. It stands perfect in the

heavens, untwarted by any sinful influence, unlike anything else

that we can see, touch, or taste in this world that has been

thwarted by sinful influence. The Psalm is having great

confidence of that in the fact that the Lord's word will endure

forever because it stands firm in the heavens.

He didn't say it stands firm in my confession.

He didn't say say it stands firm my denomination.

He didn't say it stands firm in my belief system.

It stands firm in the heavens. Why?

Where God supersedes over His own Word, His sovereign power

holds it up no matter what. It will endure forever.

Why? Because God will endure forever.

Because God's Word, like God himself, is just.

Write it down. Infinite.

Infinite. Psalm 90, verse 2.

Psalms 90:2

This is before the mountains were born.

You brought forth the whole or you or you brought forth the

whole world from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

He's talking about the infinite nature of God.

And when we begin to understand the infinite nature of God, we

will begin to understand the infinite and inexhaustible

nature of the Word of God. What I am blown away most about

the Scriptures is this. I can study them day in and day

out. And when I get through after

several days of studying the Word of God day in and day out,

I am reminded that I know nothing about the enduring

eternal infinite Word of God. That I have only but just

scratched the surface. Because as God is infinite, His

Word is also infinite. It is infinitely spoken from the

mouth of an infinite God. Therefore, it will endure when

all other things pass away. Not only is it infinite in its

nature because God in himself is infinite in his nature, it's

also immutable. Malachi chapter 3 verse 6.

Malachi 3:6

Malachi under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, says, I, the

Lord, do not change, so the descendants of Jacob are not

destroyed. Malachi penning the.

Voice of God, the words of God there, the Lord himself

declaring about himself. I don't change.

I'm thankful for an immutable God.

I am also thankful for his immutable word, because his word

endures for the same reason that God the Father will endure

forever. Because the word of God, just

like God himself, is immutable. That means this He cannot

change. Therefore, his word cannot and

will not change. Now, why is this important?

It's important to our culture. I can assure you of this.

It's important to the the the church culture in in the age

that we live in because many people are constantly trying to

change the word of God, aren't they?

They are constantly trying to mold and to fit and to morph the

word of God into what it is that they want to believe, into what

it is that they want to think into what it is and what manner

is that they desire to live. And God has immutably spoken His

word. Now, what I mean by that is

this. If God said to Moses that a man

is not to lie with a man as he does with a woman, he's talking

about homosexuality. No one wants to go to the Old

Testament to learn those things. It is very clear what he is

saying. He is saying homosexuality is a

sin and you can't find any room in Scripture to declare it as

something else because God is immutable and His word is

immutable. If it was wrong in the days of

Moses for a man to lie with a man in a homosexual

relationship, it is still wrong today.

Now, I know in our crazy culture, there are many people

even professing Christians, and I use that word lightly

professing because that's about all you have.

If you can take this stand, who are going to get angry with me

because I simply quote to you the immutable, unchanging word

of God. We know this.

He reiterates it in the New Testament.

Such will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Let's don't just talk about that.

Let's talk about other types of sexual immorality.

Those who think it's OK to test drive a spouse these days,

right? To just live with them for

several years to make sure that everything's going to be OK

because I don't want to get into a relationship and it not be OK.

Can I help all of you? If you are going to marry a

woman, you are a man and you marry a woman or you're a woman

and you're going to marry a man, everything's not going to be OK.

You're 2 sinners trying to coexist.

You're going to have to learn how to depend on God much.

But isn't that the mindset we've changed the scriptures to, where

we just join in some kind of cohabitation and justify our

sexual immorality? It shouldn't be so.

Many people trying to change the immutable Word of God when it

comes to meeting together on the Lord's Day and worshiping him,

joining together with other believers, doing what we will do

in just a moment, observing the Lord's Supper, observing

communion together, remembering Christ.

Oh, and it's not about those things, though the Scriptures

say it should be about those things.

It's not about your thought needs or how you can live your

best life now or a better life on this world that is fleeting

and temporal. God's immutable Word has not,

will not, and cannot ever change.

He's spoken on these things. It's sad that many denominations

are divided over issues such as women and pastoral.

Leadership. It's pretty easy for me.

I don't even have to get into the debates.

In fact, I will not debate you on this.

I will simply say to you that a woman is not the teacher to have

authority over a man. He was speaking about leadership

in the church. I will also quote to you that

the woman is the weaker vessel and it is the man who is the

leader of his home and he should be the prophet and priest and

king of his home. I will not apologize to anyone

for that. Why?

Because the immutable word of God has spoken and has not

changed. God has not changed His mind on

these issues. Now the world has changed their

mind on these issues, but God is not wavering in His mind as we

are. He does not change, therefore

His Word does not change. And when He has spoken, He has

spoken and He has said what He said, and He meant what He

meant, and we need to take that to the bank.

These issues are so clear in Scripture, but yet in the

society that hates God and hates His word, even in the so-called

church, we're having debates over this.

You know what we want? We want God's Word to fit our

lives instead of desiring that our lives fit God's Word.

That's what we really don't want.

That's what's at the root of it. And you know what?

A wicked person desires that a wicked person desires to justify

their sin. I remember what it was like

before I was redeemed, constantly justifying my sin as

if it was right, and Scripture said full well that it was

wrong. God does not change.

He's immutable. That's why His word is eternally

standing. It's infinite.

It's immutable, it's indestructible.

That's what Peter says when he quotes from Isaiah 40.

Peter says this. He says, for you have been born

again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable through the

living and enduring Word of God. Be thankful of that.

It's the living and enduring Word of God that brought forth

salvation in your life. Aren't you glad that the Word of

God didn't cease before you heard the gospel and were saved?

And it will not cease, He goes on and he says this.

For all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the

flowers of the field. The grass Withers and the

flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

And he says, and this is the word that was preached to you.

He says this is the word that was preached to you, that

everything in this world, the grass, the flowers, even

humanity, it will fall and it will fade.

But the word of God, it will endure forever because it is

the. Eternal, infinite, immutable,

indestructible Word of God. Everything throughout history

that has come against the Word of God, the burnings, the laws

that were passed making it illegal illegal, the efforts

that tried to keep the Word of God from being printed in

English so that we can have a copy in our hand, All of those

things. Failed.

Why? Because God's word is eternal.

The grass Withers and the flowers fall, but the word of

God endures forever. Oh, be thankful for the enduring

Word of God. Psalmist encouraging us with

this. We know though at times the word

might not be settled in our heart, might not be settled in

our mind, but it's forever settled in heaven.

Let that bring us confidence. Let that bring us confidence

when we pray. Why?

Because Jesus taught us to pray like this.

Not our will, but your will be done on earth as it is in

heaven. Oh, do you think for a second

that in heaven the will of God that has been revealed in the

scriptures is not being done right now?

I can take you to passages that will show you it is.

It's worship 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365.

Days a year and it will be like that and it's no longer measured

by time where it's just measured in the expanse, vastness of

eternity. And we approach the Word of God

knowing that it is the enduring word of God.

Secondly, I want you to see this from the psalmist.

God's eternal word is encouraging.

Oh, it's so encouraging. I pray this morning that you

would be encouraged by His Word. Verse 92 says this.

If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished

in my affliction. Wasn't that the testimony of all

Christians if they were to get honest?

He goes on. And he says, I will never forget

your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.

Well make no mistake, it's by His word that your life.

Was preserved. It's by His word that you are in

Christ. Be thankful that His word went

forth and you heard the truth of the gospel according to the

scriptures. And in that God used the word of

God to draw you unto himself for salvation, to birth faith in

you, to regenerate you to new life.

It's exactly what Scripture, by nature and by design, is

designed to do. He says I'll never forget your

precepts, for by them you've preserved my life.

He says in 94, Save me, for I am yours.

Look at the surrender there. Save me, for I am yours.

I know that because I belong to you, I have the hope of

salvation. And how do I know that I've

sought out your precepts? Your word declares that I've

sought out your precepts, and your precepts have proven that.

But there are those days when maybe I don't feel safe.

But your word says that I am saved.

Aren't you glad that salvation is not a feeling?

It's a truth. It's solid and it stands firm

because God's Word is eternal. He says the wicked are waiting

to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes.

He says people are trying to take my life.

I'm not going to worry about that because I have promises of

eternal life. I have promises of security, I

have promises of your protection.

And so the word of God is, is not only blessing us because

it's everlasting and enduring, but also because of how

encouraging it is to the believer.

God's word, write it down, promises salvation.

Anyone here thankful for the promised salvation that we have

according to the word of God, the eternal word of God provides

eternal salvation. Psalm 6820 Our God is a God who

saves from the sovereign Lord comes escape from death.

The psalmist there riding that with great confidence, knowing

that our God is a God who? Saves and who rescues his people

from death? How does he know this?

He didn't know this because he got some apparition, because he

dreamed some dream or had some vision.

How does the psalmist know the things that he knows?

He says if your law had not been my delight, I would have

perished in my affliction. I know what I know about life

and death because of the Word of God.

I know what I know about salvation because of the Word of

God and what the Word of God promises.

And He gives great promises concerning salvation, doesn't

he, to the believer, because it's only the true believer

who's saved. In fact, John chapter 6, verse

John 6:40

40, Jesus says this from my Father's will is that everyone

who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have

eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

What? A promise, eternal life, a

future resurrection, a future glorification, all contained

there, and the enduring eternal promises of Scripture straight

from the mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, giving

the promise of salvation to all who will believe and trust in

Him for eternal life. This happens, as we know,

through faith in Christ and faith in Christ alone.

Or may we be reminded of that once again.

May we be reminded of that daily.

I would encourage everyone preach faith in Christ alone to

yourselves every day. Some of my greatest sermons on

faith alone and trusting on faith alone have been preached

only to me, where I went back to the scriptures and I realized

that this has nothing to do with Kirk Hall, that I have nothing

to offer a holy God who is in need of nothing, but yet that he

offered everything for me, that I would be saved, that I could

experience true salvation, true forgiveness of sin, true eternal

life. And I preached to myself

constantly through grace alone, through faith alone in Christ

alone. Why?

So that I don't have the tendency to boast in what I've

done because I've done nothing, only thing that I've ever done.

It's proved that I am a scoundrel and a rotten Sinner.

God has proved that He's faithful to His promises and His

Word over and over and over to the Sinner who will believe and

trust in Him. Is that not what John tells us?

John chapter 3 verse 16, it says for God so loved the world that

John 3:16

he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him

shall not perish but have eternal life.

He says in 17 for God did not send his Son into the world to

condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

He didn't have to come to the world to condemn us.

We were already condemned, lost in our sin, cut off and

alienated from a holy God. He says in 18, whoever believes

in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands

condemned already because they have not believed in the name of

God's one and only son. What is he talking about that

here? He's talking about belief, faith

to sue O in the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.

He's he's talking about trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness

of sin. He's trusting about, He's

talking about trusting in Christ for the condemnation that was

upon you to be lifted, to be washed.

What does he say about it? This for all those who by faith

trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Oh, may we return to the scriptures over and over and

over again cling to the fact that I do by faith trust in

Jesus Christ and his finished work at Calvary, his death, his

burial, his resurrection and that and that alone do I trust

for forgiveness and eternal life.

Well, the scriptures give us great encouragement because of

the promises salvation John Chapter 10.

John 10 · chapter mention

Mercedes says all who have come before me are thieves and

robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.

He says I am the gate, whoever enters through me will be saved.

They will come in and go out and find Pastor, whoever enters.

Through Christ will be saved. What a promise.

Have you entered through Christ? Are you trying to enter into

another way? There is no other gate.

There is no other door. It is Christ, and it is Christ

alone, and faith in Him the Scripture does so promise.

And those who enter in through Christ will be saved.

John 17 verse 2 says for you granted him authority over all

John 17:2

people that he might give eternal life to all those you

have given him. Speaking of Christ Now this is

eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and

Jesus Christ whom you have sent the Father granting authority to

the Son, the Son coming, promising and offering eternal

life to all who. Believe.

And to those who know him and to know the only true God whom he

has sent the Lord Jesus Christ, he says you'll be saved, you'll

be rewarded with eternal life. What promise, what encouragement

that we have from that? Not only do we have that

promise, salvation in the future through Jesus Christ, we have it

now promise. Salvation from all suffering,

affliction and death. But you know that we can cling

to that, that our sufferings, our afflictions.

We sing the psalmist and his share of sufferings and

afflictions. Through this journey in the

119th Psalm, we can cling that God is going to bring salvation

for our suffering, our affliction.

And even death. Second Timothy chapter 4 verse

2 Timothy 4:18

18, it says the Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and

will bring me safely to his heavenly Kingdom, to him be

glory forever and ever. Amen.

That's the apostle Paul giving encouragement to Timothy and

those. Believers there who?

Were under Timothy's care, he says.

The Lord's going to rescue me from every evil attack that this

world and Satan might bring against me, and he'll bring me

safely into his heavenly Kingdom.

What promise of salvation? That promise stands.

Why? Because God's Word is eternal.

And if God's Word wasn't eternal, we'd be in trouble,

wouldn't we? That's the reason that many

people don't want to believe in the doctrine of eternal

security, because they don't believe in the doctrine of the

eternal Word of God. God has.

Spoken it, it is so let us just go back and review for a second

John 316. What did he say?

He tells us right there that if we will in John 316, believe and

we will trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

That we will never perish but have eternal life.

Now God couldn't promise eternal life and then take it back from

you because His eternal word is already dubbed at eternal.

And therefore God's word when He says to promise to save those

who believe in Christ, when you believe in Christ truly.

Surrendering to Him as your Lord and Savior, you are forever

sealed. In fact, Scripture says you're

sealed to the day of redemption and the Holy Spirit seals you,

just as God sealed the door of the ark when Noah and his family

were ushered in by. The will of God and the power of

God. We too in Christ have received

promise salvation. I'm all suffering affliction and

even death. It's for all those who call on

the Lord and surrendered. Look at the psalmist here

calling on the Lord and surrender.

Verse 94 He says save me for I am yours.

He is surrendering himself completely to the Lord, knowing

what His word. Says I have sought out your

precepts, and you know what his precepts said.

Fear the Lord, surrender to the Lord, have faith in the Lord,

honor the Lord, give everything to the Lord, and hear the

psalmist doing exactly that. Save me for I am yours.

He's doing what Paul instructs the church to do in Romans 1013,

where he says for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

will be saved. On your hour of desperation,

your time of reckoning, where God brings your attention to the

fact that you are a Sinner and you are deserving of the wrath

of God and deserving of hell. Call on Jesus for His mercy.

Call on Jesus for His mercy. Why?

Because whosoever calls upon him will be saved.

Psalm 86, five says this. Yet you, Lord, are forgiving and

good, abounding in love to all who call to you.

Or perhaps today is that day where you see your need

according to the Scriptures, and you will call unto Him, and He

will, according to His promises that we see in His Word, save

you, just as He has eternally promised to do for all who

called Him. Would you call to Him today and

be saved? Would you trust in Him and Him

alone? Why?

Because it's been revealed to you in His Word.

That those who believe and trust in Him will be saved.

And that is eternal. It has not changed.

It is not who trust in Him to be saved.

And they attend church and, and they, they, they are baptized

and they, they observe communion and they.

Are are are really really good in attendance.

They even become full-fledged church members.

He didn't say that one must begin with trusting Him for the

salvation that He has promised, believing that that is an

eternal promise for all. You trust in Him, Oh my God,

open your eyes to show you that today, because in showing you

that what He will do then as He will draw you to the only hope

that you have, which is Christ, We see that His word promises

salvation. How encouraging that is to each

of us. How encouraging that is in those

dark times. And we have to trust in nothing

but the word of God, because we have nothing to trust in but.

The word of. God to know that all of His

promises concerning salvation are true.

He also promises security, eternal word that provides

eternal security to God's children, eternal security in

regard to salvation, but security in the fact that He is

carrying us and He is protecting us and He is holding us

constantly by His word. Proverbs 30, verse 5, Every word

Proverbs 30:5

of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take

refuge in Him. Are you taking refuge in Him?

Are you taking refuge in the Lord?

If you're taking refuge in the Lord, according to his word,

he's a shield. He is a protective from you, for

you. And what does He protect you

from? Write it down.

He protects you from wickedness and the influence of wickedness.

Let's all ask the question, is there an influence of wickedness

around us constantly in this world?

Of course there is the Prince and the power of the heirs,

influencing the entire world with wickedness the Lord will

protect. Us through His eternal word, as

we look to it, in the midst of that influence, He will protect

us by His Word. Psalm 3740.

The Lord helps them and delivers them.

He delivers them from the wicked and saves them because they take

refuge in Him. And how do we know?

We're taking refuge in Him? We're taking refuge in His Word.

We are standing on the firm foundation of the promises of

Scripture. Oh, you go back and you see

Jesus teaching about the homes 1 built on a sand, the sand one

built on a firm foundation. That firm foundation being the

word of God. That fleeting foundation being

the sinking sand of this wicked world.

And you can seek refuge and you can found find foundation in

either or, but won't last and 1 won't.

And the wise man is going to build his house on Christ and

build his house. From the promises of the words

of Christ found in Scripture is His eternal word that gives us

the promised security that we all have access to in Christ,

shielding us from wickedness. The influence of wickedness.

The intentions of the wicked. Don't you know that the wicked

have intentions? Their intentions are just as

their name declares, wicked. The psalmist here experiencing

that the wicked are waiting to destroy me.

They want to take his life. You know what he does?

He doesn't fear in what the wicked can do to him.

What does he do? He meditates on the word of God.

He said the wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder

your statutes. Why would he be pondering the

Lord's statues when the wicked want to destroy him?

Because he knew that the Lord would shield him from the wicked

attacks, that the Lord would even shield him from death.

Psalm 138, verse 7. He says, though I walk in the

Psalms 138:7

midst of trouble, you preserve my life.

You stretched out your hand against the anger of my foes.

With your right hand you save me.

Where do we find that? We find that in the Word of God.

Where did he find that? He found that in the Word of

God. He knew how God had preserved

His people throughout the ages and that God would continue to

preserve His people according to His Word.

He has made us that promise. That he will shield us.

The influence of the wicked from the intentions of the wicked,

but also from the world. Anyone here thankful that God

Shields us from the world? Oh, if we were not shielded from

the world right now. You think the world is wicked

and evil now? Oh please know this, that God is

shielding us from just how. Wicked it would be if man was

just simply turned over to themselves.

He Shields us from the world, from the deception of the world

constantly coming at us. Bossians 113.

It says this. For he, Speaking of Christ, has

rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the

Kingdom of the Son he loves. We don't have to walk Into

Darkness. He's rescued us from the

dominion of darkness, the deception of this world we can

now walk in. Truth.

You know what's interesting about that?

Where do we find truth? We find truth in the eternal

Word of God that He has spoken. You want light in your darkness?

You want truth in a mixed up world.

You find truth in the 66 books of Scripture.

Can you find no truth anywhere else that is absolute and that

is eternal? That's what the psalmist desires

that we understand here. We have promises from God's

Word, promises salvation, promises of security from

wickedness from the world, the deception of the world, the

destruction of the world. Did you know the world will face

utter destruction? It says in second Peter chapter

2 Peter 3:10

3 verse 10. But the day of the Lord will

come like a thief, the heavens will disappear with the roar,

the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and

everything done and it will be laid bare.

He said there's going to come upon the earth's destruction.

You know what the eternal Word of God promises those who are in

Christ? Security from the coming

destruction well I can't think help but think about my good

friend Christian in the Pilgrim's Progress where

evangelist warned him about the destruction that was coming that

he should flee the city of destruction and he left his

family behind and he fled the city of destruction headed to

the Celestial City according to the word and the will of God

Church be thankful if you have fleed the.

Destruction that is to come and you are safe and secure in the

arc of Christ. Rejoice that God has brought you

there and He brought you there through His eternal Word.

Don't forget that. Destruction is coming upon the

world, just as the Scriptures declare that God promises

security to those who trust in His Word.

Just as the psalmist is saying here, the wicked are waiting to

destroy me. But I will ponder your statutes.

I'll delight in Your Word because if it were not for Your

Word, I would have already perished.

You can see the promised security that His Word brings

from wickedness and from the world, the destruction and

deception of the world. Oh, but there's one more that we

have to speak of. That's not a very popular topic.

God's Word promises us security from wickedness, from the world,

but also from the wrath of God. I understand that it's not a

topic that everyone wants to talk about.

In fact, it's one that many don't talk about at all.

But please know this, according to scripture, when God saves us,

we are saved from someone and something many.

People, if you were to ask them, unfortunately in the modern

church age, what are you saved from?

When they tell you that they're saved because someone has taught

them that they're saved but never has taught them what they

have been saved from. And you were to say, what are

you saved from? And they would respond, so I can

go to heaven. No, you're not saved from.

So anything. You're saved from something.

And people are afraid to say this for fear that it would

somehow paint God in a bad image.

No, His wrath is just. His wrath is holy.

His wrath is pure. And when you are saved,

according to scripture, you are secured from the wrath of God

that is to come upon all unbelieving mankind.

Please make note of this. You're saved from the wrath that

you deserve. Because you're a Sinner, God and

His mercy and His love for you in Christ poured His wrath upon

His only begotten Son so that you could go free.

He who knew no sin became sin, so that we might become the

righteousness of God. God has by His word promised to

secure the righteous, and to remove his wrath from them.

Now watch how he did this. He offered himself on a cross,

and the wrath of the Father was poured out upon Him, He who knew

no sin. And he bore the wrath that I

deserved, and I. Bear the righteousness that is

rightfully his. Therefore I stand before God.

Not as someone deserving of the wrath of God, though I'd be

deserving of the wrath of God. I stand before God, clothed in

the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the wrath of God being

removed not just in this life, but for all eternity, never to

face the wrath of God again. Romans 58 and 9 says this, but

God demonstrates His own love for us in this.

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Watch what He says in nine so many times.

We read 8 by itself, but don't forget nine since we have now

been justified by His blood. How much more shall we be saved

from God's wrath through him? How much more will we be saved

from God's wrath through him? Or what promises that we have,

encouraging promises from Scripture that we are secure

from the wrath of God that will come upon this earth, that will

come upon the unbelieving and the wicked sinners.

In fact, First Thessalonians chapter 5, Paul says this, he

says for God did not appoint us. Who's the US, the believer?

God did not point us to suffer, appoint us to suffer wrath, but

to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Oh, I'm so thankful that God appointed me to receive

salvation through my Lord Jesus Christ.

And He has promised me in His Word that because I have

surrendered to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, as I was

appointed to do before the foundations of the earth, He

promises that the wrath of God will never come upon me.

Well, I know what you think, Kirk.

You deserve the wrath of God. Yes, I do.

I'm so thankful that in his grace and His mercy, He didn't

give me what I deserved. And he continues to give me so

much more than I could ever begin to deserve.

Oh, he promises US security. What encouragement?

Be secure, believer. Today, God's eternal Word offers

eternal encouragement and offers internal and eternal

encouragement for all who trust in Jesus Christ according to the

Scriptures. So God's eternal Word, we've

seen it is enduring, it's encouraging.

Let's not miss this. It's excellent.

It's excellent, and I say it because it's excellent beyond

compare. Look what the psalmist says to

all perfection. I see a limit, but your commands

are boundless. The psalmist notates that total

perfection is found in God's Word and that when we lay the

Word of God beside everything else that we would dove with our

human minds perfect. For instance, a newborn baby.

Your baby's born. You look at your baby's eyes,

you make eye contact for the first time, and many times you

hear the words he or she is perfect until you take them home

that first night. You realize they are not perfect

at all. They're little sinners.

Oh, we would look at the driven snow and we would say, oh, look

how beautiful and how perfect it is until you take a walk in the

driven snow and you see that it has been tainted by animals or

humans. And so it seemed perfect at

first glance. It's not as perfect as you

thought it would be, or until it begins to melt and it mixes with

dirt and it becomes mud. You've all been in those towns

where that happens. Oh, it seemed perfect, but it

wasn't perfect. Well, what about the perfect

sunrise, perfect sunset that you witnessed?

Well, just the other night as we witnessed a beautiful sunset.

I knew that it wasn't a perfect sunset because this world has

been corrupted by sin, and I long for the beauty of the

things that are eternal, the beauty of the word of God.

That's what the psalmist is saying.

You say I'm laying the word of God next to the most beautiful

sunset that I have ever. Seen and I see a limit in that,

but your word is boundless. It's perfect.

It's perfect in all aspects. I'll write this down.

It's perfect in composition. Please understand this about the

Word of God In a generation where people do not want to

believe this. The Word of God is inerrant.

There are no errors from Genesis all the way to Revelation.

The Word of God is pure and inerrant.

If you want to debate someone on that topic, don't come to me.

I will not debate it with you. I will simply quote to you what

I just read in Psalm 1/19/96 to to all perfection.

I see a limit, but Your commands are boundless.

Your word is infinitely perfect. The excellence of God's word is

confirmed to us by it's perfect composition.

The Bible's not some invention of man.

Man didn't sit down and say, you know what?

I think I'm going to write law for myself.

He's no sinful man would have ever done that.

And if we were to do that, there would be liberty and not law.

We would do whatever it is that our sinful inclinations wanted

us to do. But God has in his Word written

to us His perfect and boundless inerrant commands.

And they're perfect in their composition.

Not the invention of man, not the inscription of humans, but

the inscription of a perfect, complete.

Holy, flawless God spoken by God himself.

Well, Please remember that, believer, when you read one

verse, when you read 10 verses, when you read an entire chapter,

when you read an entire book, all of it spoken and breathed by

a perfect God, Therefore it is perfect in its composition, was

spoken by God and his perfection.

But what's this? It was also.

Superintended by God himself. Many people forget this.

Many people forget the fact and they say stupid things like

this. Yeah, but when man got involved,

it all got messed up. No, it didn't, because it was

God's will that man got involved.

But can I tell you, this scripture is very clear.

Second Peter, chapter one, verse 19, he says we also have the

prophetic message as something completely reliable, perfect,

and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light

shining in a dark place, a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto

our path, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in

your hearts. Above all, he says, you must

understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the

prophet's own interpretation of things.

If you continue to read what you will see, these were men of God

who were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Now, I know that a lot of people want to reduce the Holy Spirit

to secondary. He is not.

He is the third person of the Triune Godhead.

He is as equally and eternally God as the Father, and God as

the Son and God. The Holy Spirit superintended

every single aspect of Scripture.

He guided the hands of man before they ever dipped the

feather into the quill. He guided them, they dipped that

quill into that ink. He superintended every single

aspect so that the word of God is perfect in His composition.

He carried them along. He carried them along into

perfection, and so we can have great confidence that His Word

is excellent, perfect in composition, superintended by

God Himself, spoken by God Himself, but also secured by God

Himself. Psalm 138.

Two, Psalm 138 two says this. I will bow down toward your holy

temple, and we'll praise your name for your unfailing love and

your faithfulness. For you have you have so exalted

your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame?

He said. Lord, you have exalted your word

so high that it surpasses your own fame.

I want you to stop and think about that for a second.

That God values His Word so much that He allowed the eternal word

of Himself to surpass His fame. Oh, it's not a coincidence that

this is the all time bestseller. It will always be the all time

bestseller. It is the Word of God that He

Himself has exalted, the perfect Word of God, and the Word

declares that, and it's perfect. In its composition he vouchsaves

his own word by his own name. Numbers 2319.

The word of God declares this God is not human that he should

lie, not a human being that he should change his mind.

Does he speak? And then not act.

Does he promise and not fulfill? No.

Everything that he says in his word is a promise, and it is

true. He will fulfill all of that

according to His name. He has exalted His word above

even His very name. First Samuel 15 verse 29 says

1 Samuel 15:29

this. He who is the glory of Israel

does not lie or change His mind, for He is not a human being that

He should change his mind. God hasn't changed his mind.

He does not lie. His word is perfect.

His promises are perfect. Everything that He set forth for

it to do, it will do. It's perfect in composition, but

it's also perfect in character. We talked about it being

inerrant. There is no fault.

There is no error. It's also perfect in character.

Why? Because God's character is

perfect. The infallible character of God

assures the infallible nature of his eternal word.

So just as the characteristics and attributes of God are

infallible, how many of you say? Yes, I believe that.

Then every word spoken from his mouth that cannot and does not

lie is infallible as well. We'll see the excellence of

God's Word when we think about that.

It's perfect in character because it articulates the

perfect one who spoke it. And that's how we learn about

God, isn't it, through his word, the articulation of his word,

Deuteronomy 32 four, it says He's the rock, His works are

perfect and all his ways are just.

A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

He's a rock, His works are perfect and all his ways are

just and faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is

He. He's a rock, His works are

perfect, and all his ways are just and faithful.

God who does no wrong, upright and just.

Is he? And if he is infallible there,

therefore his word will be found infallible.

Psalm 1830. It says, As for God, His way is

perfect, Lord's word is. Flawless.

He Shields all who take refuge in him because God is perfect.

His Word is flawless and perfect as well.

What great hope we have from the eternal Word of God when we look

at the excellence of what it really.

Is how He articulate articulates the perfect one who spoke it,

but who in His word also accomplishes exactly what it was

spoken to do. Not only does He articulate who

He is, revealing that to us. His perfection, His Majesty, His

glory, all seen in His. Word.

He accomplishes exactly what he has spoken to do.

Aren't you glad that God's just not a God of talk?

He's a God of power. In fact, Isaiah 55, in a verse

that you all know and often misquote it, says this.

So is my word that goes out from my mouth.

It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I

desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

What is God saying about His perfect character being revealed

in His perfect and excellent word?

He's saying this that my Word accomplishes exactly what I

desire for it to accomplish. You know what God's Word doesn't

accomplish? Exactly what you want it to

accomplish. Oh, I've had to rest in this as

a preacher of the gospel because when I preach the Word, you know

what I wanted to accomplish? The souls of everyone who hears

it to be saved. The unfortunate truth is this,

not everyone will be saved. Sometimes when the Word goes

forth, it is to accomplish the fact that God is going to give

some over to their very sin. You don't believe me?

Read Romans chapter 1 where in seven verses he gives man sinful

Romans 1 · chapter mention

man over six different times. God gave them over, God gave

them over, God gave them over. And sometimes when we preach the

word of God, the Word of God goes out, the promises of

Scripture go out, and men believe and women believe.

And sometimes when the Word of God goes out, men resist and

they refuse, and they remain in that state of refusion and

condemnation that we're all in before God graciously saves us.

And so know that God accomplishes His Word and the

things that are projected in His Word perfectly.

I say that so you'll know this. There are going to be those who

were saved through the preaching of the gospel according to the

will of God and the Word of God. But there will also be those who

refuse the gospel who will perish for all eternity.

Please know that. And God's will through His Word

will be accomplished both in heaven and hell for all

eternity. Let that wake you up.

Let that cause. You to see the.

Excellence of the Word of God. Because it is the Word of God,

the same word that can set you free from your sin this morning,

but it's the same word that you could reject and walk out of

here and lose your life and be condemned for all eternity and

remain in the state that you walked in in.

See that His Word accomplishes exactly what is spoken He

desires to do, and that His Word abolishes any possibility of

flaws or failings. It's perfect in character

because again, God remains perfect in character.

Psalm 12 verse 6 and the words of the Lord are flawless like

Psalms 12:6

silver purified and a Crucible like gold refined 7 times human

being that he should change. Oh excuse me, that I needed to

end at times it says that the words of the Lord are flawless

like silver purified and a Crucible like gold refined 7

times. So see that the word of God is

flawless. I probably should have went to

these for that. And but the word of God is

flawless and perfect, abolishing any possibility of any failings,

because it is the very word of God.

Psalm 1830. As for God, his ways, they're

perfect. The Lord's word is flawless, and

he Shields all those who take refuge in him.

Always Sums it all up there, doesn't he?

The psalmist here, finding again security in God's word.

And why is he finding security in God's word this time?

Because God's word is eternal. So how should we respond to

this? How should we as professing

believers respond to the fact that God's word is eternal?

Here's how we should respond. We should see the value of God's

word that in seeing that it brings us hope beyond this

fleeting and passing and cruel and wicked sinful world.

Is that what you're doing believer?

Are you viewing God's eternal word as the psalmist has in this

passage? Well, look how he has viewed his

word. He says were not for your Word,

I would have perished to my affliction.

Are you thankful for the word of God that He has used not only to

bring forth new life in you, but to bring forth new life in all

who believe and trust in Him, according to His Word to the

unbeliever? Please pay attention to this

message this morning and contemplate this if you would

contemplate what the psalmist has said, that the Word of God

is enduring and encouraging and it's excellent.

Consider those things. Consider all the truths that we

have seen that surround those things.

Consider the. Truth regarding unrepentant and

unbelieving sinners. I want you to think about that

for a second. If God's Word is true regarding

unrepentant and unbelieving sinners, if you remain in a

state of unbelief and unrepentance, you will perish

under the wrath of God for all eternity.

Did you contemplate these things in light of God's Word?

Did you contemplate the truth regarding true faith in Jesus

Christ is the only manner in which a Sinner will ever be

saved? Oh, know this.

And unless you repent of your sin, and unless you turn to

Christ, you will perish in that sin.

You'll perish for all eternity according to the Word of God.

That's not just something that I'm saying to you because I want

to sound mean. That is something the Bible

declares because God is just and you can face the justice of God

for all eternity, or you can enjoy the mercy of God for all

eternity. And it all comes down to

surrendering to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the truth

that God promises to forgive and redeem all who call on Jesus to

save them from their sin. Would you contemplate that this

morning? Would you call on Jesus to save

you today? It's the only hope that you

have. I mean desperately call upon Him

because He is your only hope. Oh, you contemplate the truth

that God does in His love grant eternal life to all who

surrender to Jesus as Lord and Savior according to His word.

And would you surrender to the Lord Jesus as your Savior today,

leaving your life of sin, forsaking the things of this

world, and running to the feet of Jesus where you will find

mercy, forgiveness for sin? Oh unbeliever, would you

consider the eternal Scriptures today, my prayers that God would

use them as he does to draw you to salvation and forgiveness in

eternal life today? Let's pray together.

Father, in the name of Jesus, we come to you, thanking you for

Your Word, thanking you for the time that we've had and the

opportunity that we've had today to spend in Your Word.

Would I pray for those who give no regard to the magnitude of

your eternal Word? God, would you change them

today? Would you change their hearts?

I pray for the lost soul who's here today who does not know

Christ. Would you save them according to

Your promises? Would you open their eyes,

regenerate them the new spiritual life as you've

promised to do? Would you give them faith to

believe and strength to repent that is required, but that you

provide? Would you save them today as

they cry out in desperation? Show them how desperate they are

without Christ and then show them how faithful you are to

your eternal word. We'll give you all the praise
