  6. Wait, man, aren't you thankful for the words of the life that

  7. the Lord has spoken in His Word? Give the Lord praise this

  8. morning. You have your Bibles with you.

  9. Turn to Psalm 119. If you don't have your Bible

  10. with you, I ask you this question, why in the world would

  11. you not bring your Bible with you to church?

  12. But if you have your Bible and you have your digital device

  13. that will allow you to see your Bible, turn with me to Psalm 119

  14. as we continue our study entitled Living a Life in the

  15. Light of God's Word. We started this study back on

  16. April the 6th, a little over six months ago as we have journeyed

  17. through this wonderful chapter in the Psalms, and we would.

  18. Air if we were to stop short. Of what we're going to see today

  19. on October 6th 1536, after being betrayed by Henry Phillips.

  20. Henry Phillips being a man who pretended to be a good friend.

  21. This man who we are discussing today was imprisoned in

  22. Villevoord Castle in Antwerp, which is modern day Belgium.

  23. For over a year. He faced harsh conditions and

  24. mistreatment and this man was then tried and he was found

  25. guilty for his crimes and he was sentenced to death.

  26. Following his sentencing, he was then led to the state to be

  27. burned there in public. He was to be executed in the

  28. Vilver Town square, but before being burned he was then

  29. brutally strangled to death and then he was set ablaze for these

  30. horrific crimes that he had committed.

  31. His last words were Lord. Opened the King of England's

  32. eyes. Who was this, many of you may

  33. wonder? And what awful and sinister and

  34. vicious crime did this man commit to deserve such a

  35. grotesque execution? Well, this man was a man by the

  36. name of William Tyndale and he had fled from England and he was

  37. now, he was now being murdered simply because he translated the

  38. Bible from the original Greek and Hebrew into the English

  39. language, which was forbidden and against the law in those

  40. days. You see, William Tyndall

  41. believed that God's Word was so important that everyone not not

  42. just the priest, not just the clergyman who who could only

  43. read it in Latin, but that everyone needed.

  44. Access to the. Scripture in their own language,

  45. he once was recorded saying to a Catholic clergyman.

  46. He said, If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a

  47. boy that driveth the plow shall know more of the Scripture than

  48. thou dost. William Tyndall desired that the

  49. plowboy would. Learn the Word of God and be

  50. more educated in the Scripture than even those in the Catholic

  51. priesthood. Of the Pope himself, he

  52. understood how important the Word of God truly is.

  53. In fact, he understood Second Timothy chapter 3 verses 16 and

    2 Timothy 3:16

  54. 17 that we had read for us a moment ago where it said all

  55. Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,

  56. correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of

  57. God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  58. And William Tyndall wanted every man.

  59. To be thoroughly equipped for every good work, Tyndall

  60. believed we needed this book, and he spent his life, and he

  61. ultimately gave his life so that we could have it.

  62. As many of you hold there in your hand a copy of an English

  63. Bible, please know that we have that because it was worth it for

  64. a man to give his life so that we could read the very words of

  65. life that we sang about a moment ago.

  66. The very God breathe Scripture. Within a few years of Tyndall's

  67. death, his final prayer was answered and King Henry the

  68. Eighth of England had a change of heart and he authorized the

  69. printing of the Bible in English.

  70. This Bible is known as the Great Bible and he mandated that this

  71. English Bible be read in all of the churches in England.

  72. Nearly 90% of that finalized English copy of the Bible was

  73. translated by the work of William Tyndall, who believes

  74. that the word of God. This old book was important in

  75. our day. As we know there are many

  76. liberals. When I speak of liberals, I'm

  77. not talking about political liberal.

  78. I'm talking talking about liberal theologians and liberal

  79. so-called Bible scholars who have convinced themselves.

  80. That the Bible is outdated. And it's no longer needed or

  81. it's no longer relevant. But may we not fall into that

  82. camp. May we consider the great cost,

  83. the great price that has been paid so that we can have the

  84. very Word of God in our hands, in a language that we can

  85. understand, that we can grasp, and that we can learn from.

  86. And we see our need for this old book and why we need this old,

  87. in fact ancient, in fact eternal book.

  88. In fact, more accurately describe it. 66 books joined

  89. together by the sovereign hand of God, canonized throughout

  90. Scripture, kept throughout history, excuse me, and kept for

  91. us as the Holy Scriptures that we now gaze upon this morning as

  92. we look at the 119th Psalm together under the heading.

  93. Tav. Which is the final letter in the

  94. Hebrew alphabet, which ironically means truth and the

  95. psalmist ends the 119th Psalm with.

  96. Truth. He says this.

  97. May my cry come before You. O Lord, give me understanding

  98. according to your word. May my supplication come before

  99. you. Deliver me according to your

  100. promise. May my lips overflow with praise

  101. for you. Teach me your decrees.

  102. May my tongue sing of Your word, for all Your commands are

  103. righteous. May Your hand be ready to help

  104. me, for I have chosen your precepts.

  105. I long for your salvation, O Lord, and Your law is my

  106. delight. Let me live that I may praise

  107. You, and may Your laws sustain me.

  108. I have strayed like a lost sheep.

  109. Seek Your servant, for I have not forgotten Your commands.

  110. Let's pray together. Father, we come to you now in an

  111. age and in a culture who seemingly wants to dismiss your

  112. word as something that is irrelevant and of the past.

  113. But Lord, we need your word. We need this old book.

  114. We need to read it. We need to study it.

  115. We need to value it. God, I pray as we look at this

  116. last section of the 119th Psalm that we see the Psalmist

  117. declaring alongside of us our great need for the Scriptures.

  118. May we value them like never before.

  119. May we walk in them like never before.

  120. May we see our great need like never before, but I pray for

  121. those who are here today who do not know Christ.

  122. I pray that through Your Word today they would see their great

  123. need for Savior, that you would rescue them from their sin as

  124. they call on you, just as Your word promises to do.

  125. And we will give you all the praise and all the glory for it

  126. in Jesus name, Amen. And so we wind up our study in

  127. the 119th Psalm. And what a journey it has been,

  128. hasn't it? How many of you would say,

  129. because of the 119th Psalm in our recent days, spending time

  130. there, analyzing, meditating, studying, reading, that a hunger

  131. for the Word of God has been grown inside of you by the power

  132. of the Holy Spirit? Living in you, I know that many

  133. of you have personally come to me sharing testimony of the work

  134. that God has done. But I believe that we all take

  135. away something from this. And if we can't take anything

  136. else away from this, though there are thousands of things

  137. that we can take away from it. I pray today that we would.

  138. Understand this last section, that we would take away the fact

  139. that we need this old book. The psalmist is going to tell us

  140. why. When the world tells us that

  141. it's not relevant and that it is outdated and that we have no use

  142. for it in our modern culture and our modern way of thinking, in

  143. our modern philosophy and all of our fancy science and all of our

  144. fancy medicine, may we see that we still have a great need.

  145. For the book, as we look at the psalmist, he's going to declare

  146. this morning why we need this old book.

  147. Verse 169 says this. May my cry come before you, O

  148. Lord, give me understanding according to your word.

  149. May my supplication come before you deliver me according to your

  150. promise. 1st I want you to see that this old book promises

  151. believers access to God. If you want to know why do we

  152. need this old book? It is in this old book that God

  153. has preserved throughout the ages.

  154. It is through this book that we realize that we can and do as

  155. believers, have access to the very throne room of God

  156. Almighty. The psalmist here, he's

  157. obviously petitioning God based on the fact that he knows that

  158. he has access to God. And how do we know that we have

  159. access to God? But by the fact that the

  160. Scriptures declare that we can access our creator, God's Word

  161. gives us that confidence. God Word.

  162. God's word gives us that assurance.

  163. God's Word promises us simply that we can come before him.

  164. Look at the psalmist's heart here.

  165. He says, May my cry come before you.

  166. Lord, I'm presenting to you desperation in the cry.

  167. May my supplication come before you.

  168. And he said, May these things come before you according to

  169. your word, according to your promise.

  170. May I access you exactly how Scripture says that I can access

  171. you. Many of us have forgotten to

  172. value the fact that we can access the throne of God.

  173. Many of us have forgotten to see what a privilege that it is.

  174. Scripture is very clear that once we were alienated from God,

  175. once we work cut off from God. But now those of us who are in

  176. Christ, we have direct access to the very throne room of God and

  177. the throne room that we can enter into God describes as his

  178. throne of grace. And I'm thankful that I can, and

  179. you can who are in Christ, access God's throne of grace.

  180. We don't have to stand any longer before his throne of

  181. judgement, knowing full well that's what all.

  182. Of us deserve we can come before God's throne of grace as a

  183. psalmist cries out to him. Let us be reminded that our

  184. cries come before God's throne of grace as well.

  185. In fact, Psalm 34 verse 17, it says this, the righteous cry out

    Psalms 34:17

  186. and the Lord hears. Them, and He delivers them from

  187. all their troubles. O may we from the Scriptures,

  188. this old book, have the confidence of knowing that when

  189. we cry out to God, He does truly hear us and He does truly work

  190. on our behalf for His glory. Hebrews 416 speaks of this

  191. throne of grace where He says, let us then approach the throne

  192. of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find

  193. grace to help us in our time of need.

  194. Christian, whatever it is that you were going through, whatever

  195. it is that you are in need of the very word of God says that

  196. we have access to God's throne of grace in our time of need.

  197. Perhaps today you need strength petition is thrown.

  198. Perhaps today you need wisdom petition is thrown.

  199. Perhaps today you need deliverance petition is thrown

  200. and have confidence from. The Word of God that He promises

  201. believers access. To God, we are no longer cut

  202. off, we are no longer alienated. We are invited in.

  203. We are welcome to, to, to commune and to even dine with

  204. God Most High. First John.

  205. John says this in chapter 5, the 14th verse.

  206. He says this is the confidence we have in approaching God, that

  207. if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

  208. Oh dear Christian, hear that this morning.

  209. That you have full access as a son, as a daughter of God most

  210. high into His throne of grace, where you can ask anything

  211. according to His will, and he hears you.

  212. Be confident of that. John Owen said this.

  213. He said the throne of grace is a throne erected in the heart of

  214. God, where mercy reigns and grace is dispensed.

  215. Do you need mercy? Do you need grace?

  216. Run to his throne. He there delivers mercy and

  217. dispenses grace to all who trust in Him.

  218. Jeremiah Burrows said this. God delights to have us come to

  219. him, and he opens the door to the throne of grace and bids us

  220. welcome. Well, that's for all of you.

  221. We've been listening to the lives of the enemies.

  222. Even as the enemy, even as a believer, you have thought to

  223. yourself, surely God will not welcome me in.

  224. For all of you who are in Christ, let me assure you of

  225. this according to His Word. He welcomes you in, and he

  226. delights to have you come. Jesus himself said, Come unto

  227. me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you

  228. rest. Says take my yoke upon you, for

  229. my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  230. Well, this old book promises believers access to God, access

  231. to God's throne of grace. But how about this in regard to

  232. access, Access to God's infinite wisdom and His perfect will?

  233. It is in the Scriptures that God gives us access to His very

  234. mind. I want you to stop, and I want

  235. you to think about that for a second.

  236. He gives the finite human access to His infinite mind.

  237. We are enabled by the Scriptures to understand our Creator in a

  238. way that we could not otherwise ever begin to understand Him.

  239. It is because in the Scriptures He reveals Himself unto us.

  240. It's the Scriptures that give us access to the mind of God.

  241. Psalm 32, eight, the psalmist declaring this from the Lord, I

  242. will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go, and I

  243. will counsel you and watch over you.

  244. We have a God who gives us counsel and who gives us wisdom,

  245. who directs our steps according to his word.

  246. Romans chapter 12 Paul describes it like this and in 12 verse two

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  247. he says do not conform any longer to the pattern of this

  248. world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind and then

  249. you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his

  250. good, pleasing and perfect will. Paul is teaching the Romans

  251. this, that it is in the transformation of our minds from

  252. our human secular way of thinking, sinful way of

  253. thinking, to a mind that now thinks biblically and

  254. scripturally. As God reveals Himself unto us,

  255. we are then transformed in our minds.

  256. We actually put on the mind of Christ His infinite mind,

  257. knowing His infinite wisdom, and be being made familiar with His

  258. good, pleasing and perfect will. You say, well, Kurt, does that

  259. mean if you read the Bible that you're going to become infinite?

  260. No, I'm still finite. It allows me to see a glimpse

  261. into His Majesty and a glimpse into his glory.

  262. And to think that such a king would ever allow a peasant like

  263. me to even glimpse upon his sovereign reign, to glimpse upon

  264. his infinite wisdom and his pure, pleasing and perfect will,

  265. and to even know those things. In my life, it's Paul who said

  266. to Timothy that the Scriptures make a man wise unto salvation.

  267. There in Second Timothy chapter 3 verse 15.

    2 Timothy 3:15

  268. Oh, where would we be had the Scriptures not made us wise unto

  269. salvation? I can tell you this, had the

  270. Scripture not been shared to me, I would still be lost and undone

  271. in my sin and in my unrighteousness.

  272. Yet it is through the scriptures God has given us access and

  273. promised us this access into seeing who He really is and

  274. seeing our great need for Him. So we see this old book promises

  275. believers access to God, to which I hope that each.

  276. Of you are. Thankful for access to God's

  277. throne of grace and to His infinite wisdom and will.

  278. But how about access to God's power?

  279. Let us not forget this psalmist. Not only said, May my cry come

  280. before you, O Lord, give me understanding according to your

  281. word. I I want to know your will and I

  282. want to know your wisdom. But he also said, May my

  283. supplication come before you deliver me according to your

  284. promise. He knew that in the Scriptures

  285. that he also had access to the power of God.

  286. It is there that we see that our God has the power to deliver us

  287. from every single situation and circumstance, even the very

  288. death that we will all encounter one day.

  289. His word promises us a victory over death through the Lord

  290. Jesus Christ for those who trust in him.

  291. And so we see that the promises that we have in Scripture, they

  292. allow us to access God's power in our life.

  293. Psalm 145 There in this particular Psalm, the psalmist

  294. is celebrating abundant goodness and the power of God, and it

  295. brings him great joy. In Second Chronicles chapter 20

    2 Chronicles 20:6

  296. verse 6, it says this, O Lord God of our fathers, are you not

  297. the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms

  298. of the nation's power and might are in your hand, and no one can

  299. withstand you. There we see the man of God

  300. recording for us the fact that God is almighty and no one can

  301. stand against him. And it is this Almighty God who

  302. allows us access into his sovereign almighty throne room

  303. to call on Him, as the psalmist is doing here in supplication.

  304. Deliver me. And he's calling on him with

  305. great confidence. Why?

  306. Because the promises of Scripture give us confidence in

  307. the power of God that He can and He does, and He will deliver us

  308. from every situation that we face in this world.

  309. So the psalmist confidently approached God because the Word

  310. declared that He could. And without, without this

  311. promise, we would continue to feel as if we could not approach

  312. God. But over and over and over in

  313. Scripture we see the opposite of that, that He sent His only

  314. begotten Son to this earth to die in the place of wretched

  315. sinners. And to bear the wrath and the

  316. judgement that belonged to us, and to give us His

  317. righteousness, so that our status would be now counted as

  318. righteous before a holy God. Therefore we can enter in

  319. through to His throne room through the sacrifice of Jesus

  320. Christ and the righteousness that He has imputed and given

  321. unto us. Why do we need this old book?

  322. Because without it we would have no knowledge of the fact that we

  323. can now access God the Father. And we can access him

  324. confidently. Secondly, this old book and why

  325. we need this old book is because it postures man.

  326. Properly or may we all agree that before we were regenerated

  327. in Christ, our posture was skewed.

  328. We were postured to sin. We were postured toward

  329. wickedness. We were postured toward

  330. immorality, but it is the very word of God that God uses to

  331. posture us properly. The psalmist declares this here

  332. in 171. He says, May my lips overflow

  333. with praise for you. Teach me your decrees.

  334. May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are

  335. righteous. The psalmist here is praising

  336. God for the work that has been done in and through him by God's

  337. Word. What has happened?

  338. The word of God has transformed his posture.

  339. The psalmist is not complaining about those who persecute him.

  340. He's not belly aching about the the the tough times that he's

  341. encountered. He's not moaning and groaning

  342. about the enemies who are who are who are constantly nipping

  343. at him. No, what He does instead is what

  344. He does is he begins to praise the Lord, and He's asking for

  345. more of that. May my lips overflow with

  346. praise. Teach me your decrees as you

  347. teach me Your Word. May I respond in praise.

  348. May my tongue sing of Your Word, for all your commands are

  349. righteous. He's again looking at the Word

  350. of God, and His posture is being changed.

  351. It doesn't take you long if you study the Word of God to just

  352. really break in to praise automatically and organically.

  353. Because when you begin to see the majesty of the God of

  354. Scripture, when you begin to see His power and you begin to see

  355. His authority, you begin to see His might and how He loves his

  356. people and how he works on behalf of His people.

  357. Even when they're unaware of that, you can't help but break

  358. into some kind of praise. The psalmist here defining that

  359. for us, his entire posture overwhelmed with praise for God.

  360. William Tyndall, who we spoke of a moment ago, said this.

  361. God's word is the food. Of the soul.

  362. And whoever feeds on it praises God.

  363. In truth, when you feed on the Word of God, the Word of God

  364. goes into your mind and into your heart.

  365. And what then happened? Praise comes out of your life.

  366. Oh, we don't have to spend much time talking about how praise

  367. comes out of our life. It comes out of our life in the

  368. form of obedience. The the psalmist has covered

  369. that over and over and over throughout the 119th Psalm.

  370. But here he speaks of two particular elements that I want

  371. us to really look at. As the Lord positions us to

  372. praise Him, He positions us to praise Him in every single

  373. situation. Our praise should not be based

  374. on our current situation or even the chaos of our current

  375. situation. Our praise should be based on

  376. consistent praise to God because He is consistently worthy of

  377. that praise. He should not ever be praised

  378. based on our moods. Let me say that again.

  379. He should never be praised based on our moods.

  380. Your moods change. His worth never changes.

  381. He is just as worthy when you're going through a good time as he

  382. is when you're going through a bad time.

  383. And so the psalmist here is teaching us that that the Word

  384. of God will posture us properly. So that in.

  385. Every situation we'll praise God because He's worthy of praise in

  386. every situation. Isn't that the proper posture

  387. for a child of God? Has our Father not been good to

  388. us beyond compare? Has He not been kind to us when

  389. we don't deserve his kindness? Has He not been loving to us

  390. when we don't deserve his love? Has he not been forgiving of us?

  391. When we don't, we don't. Understand His forgiveness when

  392. we don't deserve it. Of course He has.

  393. He has been forgiving and He has been loving and He has been kind

  394. and He has been merciful. Over and over and over again.

  395. Let me remind you, it is the scriptures that declare even the

  396. ones who drove the nails and the hands and the feet of the Lord

  397. Himself, He said. Father forgive them, for they

  398. know not what they do. And it is through the Scripture

  399. He positions us to praise Him in every situation.

  400. Psalm 42. Five it says, why are you

  401. downcast, O my soul, why is so disturbed within me?

  402. Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my

  403. God. You know what we learned there?

  404. And we all get discouraged, don't we?

  405. We all get downcast from time to time.

  406. But. Even in the midst of our

  407. discouragement and the heaviness of our souls and the downcast

  408. that come upon all of us in this life, it does not change God's

  409. Word. He is still worthy of all of our

  410. praise and our proper posture should be to praise Him in every

  411. situation. In Habakkuk chapter 3, Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  412. records this. In verse 17 he says though the

  413. fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines.

  414. Though the olive crop. Fails in the fields produce no

  415. food, though there are no sheep in the pan and no cattle in the

  416. stalls yet. I will rejoice in the Lord.

  417. I will be joyful in God my Savior.

  418. Oh, for the people in Habakkuk's day in agrarian societies, you

  419. know what they were saying? Nothing good is happening.

  420. We don't have any figs, we don't have any grapes, we don't have

  421. any olives, we don't have any sheep and we don't have any

  422. cows. Life is not good.

  423. But God is good, yet I will rejoice in the Lord.

  424. In every situation I will be. Joyful in God my Savior.

  425. Notice what Habakkuk didn't say. Everything's going right, so I

  426. praise God. Anyone can do that.

  427. When things are going right, it's easy to praise God.

  428. Isn't it? No, but when times are

  429. difficult, God's Word repostures us to praise God in spite of the

  430. situation, in spite of the circumstance that we're in.

  431. Not only does the Word of God posture us properly by

  432. positioning us, positioning us to praise the Lord in every

  433. situation, but His Word also positions us to praise the Lord

  434. in every way. I told you a moment ago, yes, we

  435. are to praise Him by our lives, the obedience that comes forth.

  436. But the psalmist takes it further.

  437. He says my lips overflow with praise.

  438. He's asking God do this work in me, let this happen.

  439. May my lives overflow with praise constantly for you.

  440. He's talking about his words, the things that come from his

  441. mouth. Are you living a life of praise

  442. for the Lord from your mouth? I know you live in a society

  443. where when you praise the Lord, they look at you like they're

  444. you're weird or you're strange or something is off with you.

  445. May I encourage you to continue to praise Him anyway, to let

  446. those around you who have no hope, who have not trusted in

  447. Christ, know that your hope is beyond what you see in this

  448. world, that you are going to praise God no matter what.

  449. I talk to you often about when those people inquire of the hope

  450. that you have, you know one of the ways that they know you have

  451. hope in every situation, in every circumstance, the words

  452. that come out of your mouth. You're not complaining, you're

  453. not griping, you're not fretting, you're not cursing God

  454. or cursing those around you. You open your mouth and you

  455. praise God with your words. Psalm 34, verse one, the

  456. psalmist said, I will extol the Lord at all times.

  457. His praise will always be on my lips.

  458. Does that describe you? It should as a child of God that

  459. should describe each and every single one of us at all times.

  460. His praise ought to be on our lips, and you'll find this out

  461. very quickly. If you're praising the Lord

  462. constantly with your mouth, you won't have time to gossip, you

  463. won't have time to slander, you won't have time to lie.

  464. You'll be consumed with praising him from your mouth.

  465. I would just challenge each of you.

  466. Oh, when you leave here today, how to think of all the reasons

  467. and all the things that you have to praise the Lord for, and with

  468. your mouth begin to thank Him. You will spend your entire life

  469. every single day, every moment of every day, and never, ever,

  470. ever run out of reasons to praise Him and to thank Him.

  471. The psalmist showing us here the Word of God postures us properly

  472. to be a people whose words declare the praise of our God.

  473. But he also mentions something else he says.

  474. May my tongue sing of your word for.

  475. All your commands are righteous. It is the Word of God that

  476. positions us to praise the Lord in every way with our words and

  477. with our singing the music that comes forth from our mouths.

  478. Psalm 13, verse 6 says, I will sing to the Lord, for He has

    Psalms 13:6

  479. been good to me. Has He been good to you?

  480. Then a moment ago, as we sang songs unto the Lord, did you

  481. sing as if He has been good to you, or did you sing as if you

  482. didn't want the person next to you hearing you sing?

  483. May we see a revival in God's house among His people, where

  484. His people sing at the top of their lungs.

  485. I don't care what key you're in, neither does the Lord.

  486. He wants you to sing unto Him and to make a joyful noise.

  487. He wants you to sing His Word. People wonder often why we don't

  488. sing the CC on Top 40 on Sunday mornings because so much of that

  489. is not biblical. It's feel good.

  490. It's. Soft, even times confusing.

  491. We sing songs that agree with, if not contain exactly, the Word

  492. of God. And we are not going to stop

  493. doing that. Why?

  494. Because we are to properly praise Him with His Word.

  495. All His commands are righteous. May our tongues sing of His Word

  496. all that He has revealed to us, His splendor, His Majesty, His

  497. glory, His salvation. We make music with our voices

  498. unto the Lord, not just in the assembly all of our days.

  499. Or isn't there just something about it when you're all by

  500. yourself and no one's there to care how bad you're messing it

  501. up, and you sing for an audience of one out of the overflow of

  502. your heart? Well, I love those moments where

  503. I read something in Scripture that is again, close if not

  504. identical to some of the songs that we sing, and all of a

  505. sudden that song jumps into my heart and comes out of my mouth.

  506. Isn't it true you go throughout your week singing songs of

  507. praise to the Lord after you leave here, And you should.

  508. And that's why it's so important that they're biblical.

  509. That's why we approach it as such.

  510. Because I know none of you are going to get in your car this

  511. afternoon and sing my Third Point.

  512. But I pray that you will sing the praise from the songs that

  513. we sing as you remember that Third Point.

  514. Even if you can't get it exactly right, it's OK.

  515. But I pray that that Third Point cause you to gaze upon the

  516. Savior who is worthy of all of our praise, and you speak of

  517. Him, and you sing of Him with all of your might according to

  518. the Word of God. Psalm 40 verse 3 it says He put

    Psalms 40:3

  519. a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.

  520. Many will see in fear and put their trust in the Lord.

  521. Psalm 96 one and two it says sing to the Lord a new song,

  522. sing to the Lord all the earth, sing to the Lord, praise his

  523. name, proclaim his salvation day after day.

  524. Colossians 316 reminds us of this.

  525. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and

  526. admonish one another as the word of Christ is.

  527. Dwelling in you richly as you teach and admonish one another.

  528. Watch this with. All wisdom, wisdom from His

  529. Word, and then watch this and as you sing psalms, hymns and

  530. spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

  531. Well, that is praising hymn in song.

  532. Ephesians 519. Paul instructs the church there

  533. at Ephesus to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and

  534. spiritual songs to sing and to make music in your heart to the

  535. Lord. May we find ourselves postured

  536. and positioned in our lives to do just that.

  537. May we come on the Lord's Day with excitement in our heart.

  538. Because I can tell you this, there's no greater sound and all

  539. the earth to me then when the Saints of God sing so loudly

  540. that they drowned everything else out.

  541. When they sing praise to the Lord because He has transitioned

  542. them and He has postured them into a people and into an army

  543. who praised His glorious name. So we see it is through the

  544. truth of God's Word that we are transformed and we are postured

  545. into men of praise. Because we all know this right

  546. before the Lord changed us through the preaching and the

  547. teaching of His Word, as we received that into our heart,

  548. before He changed us, You know what we were?

  549. We were complainers. Belly Acres Whiners.

  550. I know some of you said, well that's not me.

  551. You're probably the worst one, because by our human nature,

  552. isn't that what we are? Isn't that what we we can become

  553. very quickly lose sight of the important things, But His word

  554. postures us properly, making us into people.

  555. For his praise, for his glory, for his honor, we go to the

  556. third. Section of this today.

  557. This whole book is very important.

  558. We need it because it promises believers access to God.

  559. It postures a man properly, but it proclaims salvation from God.

  560. This is how we find out about the God of salvation, a God who

  561. saves. Watch what the psalmist says

  562. here in 173, he says. May your hand be ready to help

  563. me, for I have chosen your precepts.

  564. I long for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my

  565. delight. Here's a psalmist reveals that

  566. he knows the word of God proclaims salvation and that

  567. that salvation is from God and God alone.

  568. Many scholars debate on this and in 173 and 174 of this 119th

  569. Psalm, they debate, is he talking about God's salvation as

  570. it it it is viewed in respect to our life in this earth, meaning

  571. that he's our deliverer in this world and he's our our constant

  572. help in our times of trouble. He's talking about the temporal

  573. salvation that he does offer. Is he talking about eternal

  574. salvation? And I have read good scholars on

  575. both sides of the argument. And I say to both sides, yes, he

  576. is the God who helps us and who delivers us and is our ever

  577. present help in our time of need.

  578. He is our salvation in the temporal, in the literal sense,

  579. in the here and now, but he is also our salvation and our help

  580. in the eternal sense in the hereafter.

  581. He's both. And I think that the psalmist

  582. actually speaks that very clearly.

  583. He says may your hand be ready to help me, for I've chosen your

  584. precepts before he ever gets to the part where he's longing for

  585. salvation. He says, May your hand be ready

  586. to help me. The psalmist through the word of

  587. God knows that God is a God who extends his hand to help his

  588. children. That the Word proclaims that

  589. that salvation is from God in any way, shape or form.

  590. He says it is his hand. That constantly rescues those

  591. who belong to him. In fact, in Isaiah 41 verse 10,

    Isaiah 41:10

  592. it says so do not fear, for I am with you.

  593. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

  594. I will strengthen you and help you.

  595. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  596. It is His righteous right hand that holds us forever.

  597. Jesus declaring that in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  598. Doesn't He make that so clear that we're in the Father's grip

  599. and we're in the Son's grip and no one shall block us from their

  600. hands? That we we, we should be very

  601. grateful. It is constantly rescuing us by

  602. his hand. Psalm 18, verse 16, it says

    Psalms 18:16

  603. this, He reached down from on high, and he took hold of me.

  604. And he drew me out of deep waters, and he rescued me from

  605. my powerful enemy, from my foes who were too strong for me.

  606. He's talking about the fact that God in real time is reaching

  607. down and he is helping us. Wasn't it good to know that that

  608. we can lift our eyes to the hills and to know where our help

  609. comes from? Our help comes from the Lord,

  610. the Maker of heaven and earth. He is constantly reaching out

  611. and holding us and helping us in every situation that we face in

  612. this life. He's a rescuer and the helper of

  613. his people, but He's also the savior of His people,

  614. ultimately. Matthew chapter one verse 21, we

  615. know this is declared about the Lord Himself.

  616. It says this, she will give birth to a son and you are to

  617. give him the name Jesus because He will save his people from

  618. their sins. That Jesus came to this earth to

  619. save his people from their sins. Who are His people?

  620. All that the Father has given unto him, and all that the

  621. Father has given unto him will come.

  622. And Jesus. Often times we say his name and

  623. forget what his name means. Jehovah Yahweh saves, and it is

  624. Jesus who came to this earth born of a virgin.

  625. Born under the law to redeem those who were under the law to

  626. rescue us from our transgression, to rescue us from

  627. our sin. It is Jesus who saves.

  628. He's a savior of his people. Psalm 37 verse 39 it says this.

    Psalms 37:39

  629. The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord.

  630. He is their stronghold in time of trouble.

  631. The Lord helps them and delivers them.

  632. He delivers them from the wicked and saves them because they take

  633. refuge in Him. The psalmist knowing that in the

  634. Lord we have a Savior who does exactly what His name says.

  635. He saves that we all who are in Christ ought to rejoice this

  636. very moment. To be a people who thank our God

  637. and you spend our lives praising Him for the salvation that He

  638. didn't have to give unto any of us.

  639. But he chose to rescue the many for his glory, and he has

  640. counted us among them in Christ. So His people ultimately, as the

  641. psalmist is doing here, will long for him, and as they long

  642. for him, they will delight in His word.

  643. We talked about that much in our previous lesson.

  644. We ought to be longing for salvation to be fulfilled

  645. completely to come. To full fruition, the psalmist

  646. again finds himself trusting and trusting in God alone for

  647. salvation, as we all should, shouldn't we?

  648. It's not based upon you, based upon any work you could do, any

  649. merit that you could ever strive for.

  650. You're saved because God is a Savior and He sent his only

  651. begotten Son to this earth to rescue his people from their

  652. sin. In the word of God declares that

  653. proclaims salvation from God and God alone Thank Him for it

  654. properly. Thank Him your entire life and

  655. your entire being. So this old book is needed.

  656. Again, even though some say it's useless.

  657. I still need a Savior, and it is in this book that a Savior has

  658. been declared. His name is Jesus.

  659. I would encourage each of you to trust in Him and Him alone to

  660. save you from your sin and from the wrath that is to come upon

  661. all unbelieving and unrepentant sinners.

  662. We need this whole book because it proclaims the salvation that

  663. Jesus paid for us to have, the salvation that came from God

  664. himself. Fourthly, this whole book

  665. provides spiritual life. 175 It says, Let me live, that I may

  666. praise you, and may your laws sustain me.

  667. The psalmist here. Testifying that he knew from the

  668. Scriptures that God in His Word speaks and promises life, He is

  669. the giver of life and he is also the sustainer of life.

  670. Peter declared this. To the Lord.

  671. Jesus, after many had abandoned the Lord and apostatized, only

  672. having just intellectual faith in him and no real change of

  673. heart. There in John chapter 6, the

    John 6 chapter mention

  674. Lord asked Peter. He said, Peter, are you going

  675. to? Are you going to go away too?

  676. Are you going to depart? Are you going to leave me?

  677. That's which Peter says boldly as we sang a moment ago in John

  678. 668 Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal

  679. life. Where can we go to find these

  680. words of life? You are the only one who

  681. provides for us the spiritual life that we need.

  682. Please know this. Prior to Christ, you were all

  683. dead spiritually. There was no spiritual life in

  684. you at all. There was no little small innate

  685. speck of goodness. You were spiritually and totally

  686. dead in your sin and in your transgressions.

  687. How many of you understand that? There's no such thing as kind of

  688. dead, right? Wouldn't that be good news,

  689. right? You get news that a loved one

  690. has passed away, and then the doctor comes back.

  691. Well, he's not all the way, Dad. He's just kind of dead.

  692. Well, there's no such thing as kind of dead.

  693. And Scripture doesn't say that you were kind of dead in your

  694. sin. You were dead, dead, dead in

  695. your sin. But it's through the word of

  696. life. That God has given you spiritual

  697. resurrection. Oh, I remember the day.

  698. And you remember the day, if you're in Christ, that you heard

  699. the word of God coming from the Scriptures.

  700. And you heard the very voice that that called Lazarus out of

  701. the grave and said, Lazarus come forth in a physical sense.

  702. That very word that is proclaimed in the scriptures

  703. went into your ears and went into your mind.

  704. And God translated that into your heart.

  705. And God allowed you to see your need for Christ, and He awakened

  706. you to life, and He quickened you.

  707. He. Resurrected you spiritually so

  708. that you could believe and be saved.

  709. John chapter 5, verse 24, the Lord says this.

    John 5:24

  710. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him

  711. who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned.

  712. He has crossed over from death to life.

  713. You have been spiritually resurrected.

  714. And how did that come? You heard his word.

  715. You heard the word of. Life and in that.

  716. God provided to you spiritual life in Christ Jesus as you

  717. believed and trust in Him. Colossians 2 verse 13 it says

    Colossians 2:13

  718. when you were dead, in your sins and in the uncircumcision of

  719. your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ.

  720. He forgave us all our. Sin.

  721. When you were dead, He made you alive, and He made you alive by

  722. preserving His word and then sending someone who would

  723. proclaim His word. And then upon the proclamation

  724. of His word, He provided for you the spiritual life that He

  725. promises to all who truly hear His word.

  726. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God.

  727. You heard the word of God, and you were spiritually

  728. resurrected, God providing spiritual life unto you, not

  729. only providing spiritual life unto you, but giving you

  730. spiritual. Purpose.

  731. He says, let me live that I may praise you, that that my life

  732. may be about your glory, that my life may be constant praise for

  733. you, my life may be hidden in Christ, that my life may be

  734. completely Christ. He provides for a spiritual

  735. life, giving us a spiritual. Purpose.

  736. Wasn't it true that before Christ, when you were dead in

  737. your sin, your only purpose was to sin and to store up wrath for

  738. yourself for all eternity? I know many of you don't like to

  739. think in those terms, but that that's exactly what scripture

  740. says. But now in Christ and according

  741. to His word, you have a spiritual purpose, and that

  742. purpose is to bring God glory with your life.

  743. In fact, Ephesians chapter 2 says this about bringing God

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  744. glory through our works. He says, for we are God's

  745. workmanship in verse 10 of chapter 2, created in Christ

  746. Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do

  747. that in eternity past. God had preordained good works

  748. for you to do for His glory, and then what He did is through His

  749. Word. He provided spiritual

  750. resurrection into your life. You were born again according to

  751. what Jesus taught in John chapter 3 to Nicodemus.

    John 3 chapter mention

  752. And when you were born again, you believed on Jesus Christ,

  753. You repented of your sin, and now you have a spiritual purpose

  754. in your life. You have a new life with a new

  755. purpose. That purpose is to do the good

  756. works. Which God?

  757. Prepared in advance for you to do.

  758. Now let me just stop you for a second in case you're missing

  759. all this. You deserved death and you

  760. deserved hell, and you deserved the judgement and the wrath.

  761. Of a holy God, but yet in His grace He has allowed you a

  762. different purpose, to fulfill His glory.

  763. Because do you know this? He will be glorified in His

  764. wrath and He will be glorified in His judgement.

  765. The praise be to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, that He is

  766. not going to be glorified in our lives in regard to His judgment,

  767. but He's going to be glorified in the good works that He has

  768. prepared in advance for us to do.

  769. We get to do things that bring Him praise.

  770. He's provided us this knowledge, this spiritual life through his

  771. very word. First Corinthians chapter 10,

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  772. verse 31 says, so whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do,

  773. do it all for the glory of God. He's writing to the believers

  774. who have been saved and who have a spiritual life in Christ

  775. Jesus. They have been risen to new

  776. life. He says now you have a new

  777. purpose, and that's to glorify God.

  778. So we see that he provides spiritual life.

  779. And This is why we need this old book because it is in this book

  780. that spiritual resurrection is declared, that spiritual purpose

  781. is declared. The psalmist doesn't stop there.

  782. He says it in the next statement, and may your laws

  783. sustain me. He's now talking about spiritual

  784. nourishment that comes from. The Word of God, this

  785. nourishment that sustains us spiritually, Is God still the

  786. giver and the sustainer of life? Then He is the giver and the

  787. sustainer of spiritual life as well as He is physical life.

  788. And He sustains us How? By His word, I've spoken on this

  789. before and I will share it again.

  790. I think that the American church is spiritually malnourished.

  791. Again, I will say I am thankful for a group of people who will

  792. endure sound doctrine, sound teaching, who love.

  793. The word of God, who can't get enough of it, who feast off of

  794. it. But I'm also burdened by the

  795. many places that call themselves churches and they give up, get

  796. up, and they give humanistic. Psychological self help talks

  797. and call them sermons and only maybe include some small

  798. footnote that even might point someone to scripture somehow.

  799. And they're afraid to feed the flock.

  800. Can I remind you that Jesus, when he restored Peter there on

  801. the banks of Galilee, gave him 1 mission.

  802. His mission was to feed his sheep.

  803. Feed my sheep. Take care of those who belong to

  804. me. How do we do that?

  805. How do we take care of God's flock?

  806. We give them nourishment and sustenance from the word of God.

  807. Is that not what Jesus meant when he said in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  808. 4? When he was being tempted by

  809. Satan himself, he says it is written, man does not live on

  810. bread alone there in verse 4, but on every word that comes

  811. where from the mouth of God, oh Christian.

  812. Please hear me today, if this is the only time that you partake

  813. of the word of God, you are starving, you are malnourished.

  814. You need. Food over years.

  815. You can't figure it out. Why can't?

  816. Why can't I figure this out? Why am I always assuming like

  817. fill in the blank? I'm distant from God.

  818. I have no confidence in my salvation.

  819. I don't know if God is listening.

  820. I don't know if I can really still approach him.

  821. I don't know if I've done too much wrong that he would ever

  822. still forgive me. You know why you're asking those

  823. questions? Because you are not feasting on

  824. the Word of God that answers every single one of those

  825. questions. How can I know God's will for my

  826. life? Open this old book, Open it up.

  827. Go through the pages. See how He reveals His His will

  828. through His Word. And then walk in it, live in it,

  829. enjoy it, and praise Him for it. He sustains us through His Word.

  830. In fact, I don't know how a real Christian can make it without

  831. the Word of God. You say, well, pastor, you don't

  832. have to be so passionate about it.

  833. Let me ask you this question. If one of you was suffering with

  834. an eating disorder and I knew that you were starving yourself

  835. to death, and I called myself your friend, and I didn't

  836. intervene and say, hey, is everything OK?

  837. Because I've noticed that you've dropped a lot of weight and

  838. you're looking very unhealthy. You got black circles around

  839. your eyes and. I'm, I'm really concerned about

  840. you. You guys would say, who, who are

  841. you? What kind of pastor are you that

  842. would not have compassion on that person?

  843. Of course I would have compassion on that person.

  844. They're starving themselves to death.

  845. I saw a kid in the street who's hungry and malnourished and I

  846. had a sandwich and I didn't give my sandwich to that child.

  847. Oh, you would all be quick to say, well, Pastor Jesus would

  848. give his sandwich and you bet he would.

  849. He'd turn it into 5 or 10 sandwiches.

  850. Then why do we get so upset when the pastor gets up here and

  851. says, church, many of you are starving because the Word of God

  852. has no predominant place in your life.

  853. Many of you are starving because all you do is come in on a

  854. Sunday morning and get a small meal from someone else.

  855. And you don't spend any time alone with the Lord in prayer

  856. and in in saturation from the scripture and meditation on the

  857. Scripture. I say these things not to

  858. browbeat you. You are missing out on feasting

  859. from the very eternal Word of God, which brings nourishment to

  860. the soul of the believer. Feast off of it, dying off of

  861. it. Gorge yourself on the truth of

  862. Scripture, because it is in these Scriptures that we find

  863. life, and man cannot live on bread of lone, but on every word

  864. that proceeds from the mouth of God.

  865. Psalm 1191-O3 You remember this, as the psalmist said, How sweet

  866. are your words to my taste? Sweeter than honey to my mouth?

  867. Are His words sweet? Do you long for them?

  868. Do you long for their taste? Do.

  869. You long to consume the very word of God into your life for

  870. nourishment. John chapter 6 verse 63, it says

    John 6:63

  871. the Spirit gives life and the flesh counts for nothing.

  872. The words I've spoken to you are spirit and they are life, the

  873. spirit in their life. Are you missing out on that in

  874. your life because you're neglecting the Word of God?

  875. Let that cease in your life today.

  876. It is from the Word of God that we receive spiritual life,

  877. eternal life, a spiritual purpose, a spiritual

  878. resurrection, and spiritual nourishment that sustains us in

  879. our walk as Christians. So the psalmist knew this and

  880. God used His word to bring life, and God uses His word to sustain

  881. life. We have to trust in that.

  882. Why do we need this old book? Because it provides spiritual

  883. life and apart from this old. Book.

  884. Word of God, you don't have spiritual life.

  885. Lastly, we see this 176. We see that this old book points

  886. us to our Great Shepherd. Oh please don't miss this part

  887. of it, because many people automatically want to dub

  888. someone who God used to pen scripture as some kind of

  889. superhero who never struggled with anything. 176 says this.

  890. I have strayed like a lost as sheep.

  891. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands, he

  892. said. I.

  893. Remember your commands. I know how you work, I know how

  894. you operate. What is the psalmist saying?

  895. I'm a lost as sheep. I have strayed, and unless the

  896. Lord rescue me, rescues me, I am in deep trouble.

  897. What is he doing also here? He's confessing his natural

  898. tendency to stray from the Lord and his great need for a

  899. shepherd. Isaiah 53, verse 6.

    Isaiah 53:6

  900. Isaiah proclaims this. He said we all, like sheep, have

  901. gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own

  902. way, and the Lord has laid on him, referencing Christ, the

  903. iniquity of us all. What is a psalmist saying here?

  904. He's saying I am a sheep who has wandered away and who is prone

  905. to wandering, and I need a shepherd to rescue me.

  906. Oh, how many of you still see your need for the Great

  907. Shepherd? Constantly.

  908. Constantly. May we realize.

  909. That he is constantly rescuing us from us.

  910. May we see that we are by nature prone to wander away from the

  911. direction that he wants us to go.

  912. How many of you would say, yeah, that's me?

  913. No, it's OK. Three of you and me.

  914. I mean, there's four honest Christians in the room.

  915. I need the Good Shepherd. I need him to leave the 90 and 9

  916. and find the one like he said that he would.

  917. Oh, I'm so thankful that He did in my life, that He continually

  918. does that in my life. How does He do that?

  919. Through His Word. Because His word constantly

  920. points me to my need for this great Shepherd.

  921. Because without Him, I'm nothing but a lost, wandering sheep.

  922. Let's learn a little about this shepherd before we depart today.

  923. He's a shepherd who loves his sheep, and he loves his sheep in

  924. spite of his sheep. He loves his sheep even when his

  925. sheep don't get it right all the time.

  926. He loves his sheep even when they blow it, when they mess up

  927. big time, when they wander to pastures that they know they

  928. shouldn't wander to. He loves his sheep.

  929. Isaiah 40 verse 11 says this about the Lord.

    Isaiah 40:11

  930. He tends his flock like a shepherd.

  931. He gathers the lambs in his arms and he carries them close to his

  932. heart, and He gently leads those who have young.

  933. I'm so thankful that 2000 years ago Jesus Christ died on the

  934. cross so that the Father could gather me to his heart to

  935. express His love to me over and over and over again.

  936. His endless, enduring, everlasting love.

  937. We have a shepherd who loves his sheep, and I'm thankful He loves

  938. his wayward sheep. How about you?

  939. I'm not going to ask you to raise your hands.

  940. That didn't work good the first time.

  941. All that did was divulge your pride.

  942. I'm thankful that I have a shepherd that those of you who

  943. are in Christ have a shepherd who loves even the wayward

  944. sheep, who desires that they come home.

  945. Or perhaps today some of you are wayward sheep and you need to

  946. come home. Oh, don't believe the lies that

  947. the shepherd no longer loves you.

  948. If you were His and he has cast His love upon you, you will

  949. always be His and His love will always be upon you.

  950. Come home, come home. Just as the prodigal son

  951. returned home, it was embraced with a kiss and given a ring and

  952. a robe and fatted calf. Come home, Come home today.

  953. He still loves you even though you're wayward, but he also

  954. loves his stubborn sheep. For this I'm extremely grateful

  955. for There is no level of stubbornness that I can't be too

  956. obstinate to the point that God will somehow release me from his

  957. love. I told you He loves us in spite.

  958. Of us, there's nothing that you're going to do to change

  959. that. Just be thankful for the Good

  960. Shepherd. Be thankful for the Shepherd of

  961. our soul who loves us with the love.

  962. That we can only in this lifetime begin to understand.

  963. And how do we know this? Through His Word.

  964. He's a shepherd. He loves his sheep.

  965. It's also shepherd who leads his sheep and I'm thankful for his

  966. leadership in my life. John chapter 10, verse 27,

    John 10:27

  967. John's gospel. He says, My sheep listen to my

  968. voice, and I know them, and they follow me, and I give them

  969. eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one can

  970. snatch them out of my hand. He leads his sheep.

  971. How does he lead his sheep? By His voice.

  972. And how do we hear His voice? By His word.

  973. Oh, you see how it all comes together now that He's leading

  974. us. By His word.

  975. He's leading us into eternal life, and He's leading us into

  976. His will for our life. And we will never perish, and no

  977. one can snatch us from His hand. Oh, I'm thankful for the

  978. Shepherd who loves and the shepherd who leads, who's

  979. constantly seeking and saving the sheep that are his.

  980. Oh, I remember that day long ago, I had no idea I was one of

  981. the sheep. So I heard his voice.

  982. I heard his voice as the Scriptures were preached, as the

  983. truth was proclaimed, the truth of Scripture.

  984. God used that to call me home into the fold that Christ died

  985. for me to be a part of. I'm thankful that He is a

  986. shepherd who seeks the sheep. He leaves the 99.

  987. He finds the 1. He is the one.

  988. Luke 1910 speaks up where it says the Son of Man came to seek

  989. and to save what was lost. He's exactly who He declares

  990. that He is in John chapter 10 verse 11, where he says I am the

    John 10:11

  991. Good Shepherd, and the Good Shepherd lays down his life for

  992. the sheep. Why is it important that we see

  993. our great need for the Shepherd? Because it is a shepherd.

  994. He laid down his life for his sheep.

  995. He didn't lay down his life for those who did not belong to him.

  996. He laid down his life for those the Father had already given

  997. unto him. An eternity past the shepherd

  998. sought, and he saves those who he laid his life down for His

  999. sheep. Oh, may we be thankful.

1000. May we be thankful for the Shepherd who loves his sheep and

1001. who leads his sheep, destructing us, teaching us through His Word

1002. over and over and over again. Ezekiel 34 verse 12 it says as a

    Ezekiel 34:12

1003. shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with

1004. them, so will I look after my sheep.

1005. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered

1006. on this on a day of clouds and darkness.

1007. First Peter 225 says, for you were like sheep going astray,

1008. but now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of your

1009. souls. I pray today that God would make

1010. known to many of you through the preaching of the Word that you

1011. are one of His sheep. That you would hear His voice

1012. this morning as He calls you unto Himself, unto His flock.

1013. That He would have mercy on you, breathing life into you,

1014. breathing faith into you, breathing repentance into you.

1015. That you would turn from your sin, you would turn from your

1016. unbelief, you would turn to Christ, and you would believe

1017. today that you would follow the great Shepherd that the

1018. Scripture points us to. Richard Baxter said this.

1019. He said, he that hath Christ for his Shepherd shall not want, for

1020. he will feed, guide, and defend his flock.

1021. May we learn that. May we lean on the Scriptures

1022. and be constantly reminded of the greatness of our Great

1023. Shepherd. Oh, many of you are familiar

1024. with the 23rd Psalm, aren't you? Some of you have memorized it

1025. even in childhood. Some of you know the gist of it.

1026. Some of you perhaps have only heard it at Funeral services

1027. where it's most often read. Must not wait to read it on the

1028. day of our death. Let's read it together.

1029. It says this. The Lord is my shepherd.

1030. I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green

1031. pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters.

1032. He restores my soul. He guides me in passive

1033. righteousness for His name's sake.

1034. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I

1035. will fear no evil, for you are with me.

1036. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

1037. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

1038. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows.

1039. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my

1040. life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

1041. Well, the Scriptures point us to our Great Shepherd.

1042. Why do we need this old book? Because it is in this old book.

1043. How? We see that we need the shepherd

1044. to rescue the wandering sheep. I pray today, if you are that

1045. wandering, you are that stubborn sheep that you would.

1046. Cry out as the Psalmist did here.

1047. Seek your servant. But I'm not forgotten your

1048. commands. I know your word.

1049. I know what it says. Seek me.

  1050. Rescue me. Save me.

1051. I need you. So as we wrap this section up

1052. this morning, believer, I'll address you first because I know

1053. people often wonder, why do you always end with addressing the

1054. believer and then the unbeliever?

1055. Because there's only two types of people in the world and

1056. you're one of those two. You are either a true follower

1057. of Christ or you're a complete unbeliever.

1058. And so to the believer. I say this about this old book,

1059. that it is the very word of God, and it is beyond old, it is

1060. beyond ancient, it is eternal. It is the eternal Word of God

1061. kept and preserved for us. It is a lamp unto our feet and a

1062. light unto our paths. In fact, we are all spiritually

1063. dead without it. It is the Word of life.

1064. May it not be something that sits on a shelf and collects

1065. dust and has no real place in our lives save for a Sunday

1066. morning at church. May it be the truth that guides

1067. us, that encourages us, that sustains us, that leads us to

1068. our Savior in every area of our life, showing us once again how

1069. much He loves us and how He died to save us from our sin.

1070. May we, may we rejoice in that. To the unbeliever, May God use

1071. His Word today as He once did in my life, to open your eyes to

1072. the fact that you need a Savior to save you from your sin.

1073. And that Savior is that great Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ,

1074. that we spoke of a moment ago. May He graciously turn you to

1075. Christ this morning and away from sin and unbelief, bringing

1076. you to a place of surrender where you call on Jesus Christ

1077. and desperation, knowing what the Word says, that for

1078. whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

1079. May He cast His mercy upon you today.

1080. May He rescue you, deliver you from sin, its power, its

1081. presence, and the eternal penalty that will come upon all

1082. unbelievers, and you trust in Christ as your Lord and your

1083. Savior. Let's pray together, Father, in

1084. the name of Jesus, we come to you now, thanking you for your

1085. word. But I know to so many it is

1086. irrelevant, archaic and useless. Lord, to those who are in

1087. Christ, it is the very eternal Word of God that we rest all of

1088. our hope upon because it declares to us the Savior and

1089. who we hope. God, I pray that we value it as

1090. such, but it truly is the word of life because it is your very

1091. breathed word. God, I pray for the lost who are

1092. here today who don't know Christ, that you would spare

1093. them, that you would spare them from the wrath and the judgement

1094. that will fall upon all the unbelieving.

1095. That you would lead them into your grace and your mercy this

1096. morning in Christ Jesus, saving them as they repent and turn to

1097. you. And we'll give you all the

1098. praise for it in Jesus name, Amen.
