  6. Lay men, may we, as we have just been reminded in song, may we

  7. remember that the apostle Paul himself realized that he had

  8. been crucified with Christ. Yet he lives because it is in

  9. Christ that we find true life, isn't it?

  10. Aren't you thankful for that this morning?

  11. And you die with Christ. You were buried with Christ and

  12. you have risen to new life in Christ.

  13. Get your Bibles. If you would turn to first

  14. Timothy and the second chapter as we are going to finally get

  15. back to our series entitled Biblical Ministers and Biblical

  16. Ministry. As we have been walking through

  17. the pastoral epistles, beginning with first Timothy, we will then

  18. walk through Titus and then we will walk through Paul's

  19. believed to be the last letter, the letter of Second Timothy.

  20. And we will in those pastoral epistles see instructions and

  21. commands, encouragements to be biblical ministers and to be

  22. biblical ministries, as we are here at church, a ministry of

  23. the Lord Jesus Christ. And in today's lesson, Paul is

  24. going to start in chapter 2 with the first of many instructions

  25. to the church. It's interesting that he's going

  26. to begin with the call to prayer and wants to focus on that.

  27. I want to make great emphasis towards that today because it's

  28. important. And it's especially important in

  29. the church today because Paul is giving us instructions on how to

  30. be biblical ministers and how to be biblical ministries.

  31. And the topic is that he begins with.

  32. It's not how to have a great sounding praise van.

  33. A very melodic worship team, smooth talking, eloquent

  34. preacher, church members who do everything right, elders who

  35. always make the right decisions. He doesn't begin with those

  36. things. What he's going to do is he's

  37. going to begin with prayer. And what a sad testimony to the

  38. modern church that prayer has become so unimportant that we

  39. usually don't have it at the front of the list.

  40. We usually have it at the last of the list.

  41. When everything else hasn't worked, we then attempt to

  42. incorporate prayer. Now there is a sense in the past

  43. is that we're going to look at that.

  44. God is going to tell us through Paul to pray for everyone in

  45. general and that that truth is there.

  46. But I but I don't want you to miss the greater truth here

  47. because in the context what you're going to find out is he

  48. is specifically calling on the church to pray for the

  49. unbelievers, pray for those who lost.

  50. And so when we put it in its context, the thrust of this

  51. passage today. Will be prayer, but it will most

  52. importantly be praying for the unbelievers.

  53. So let us contemplate this today because I can tell you as I have

  54. prepared for this message, much conviction has set into my heart

  55. and in my mind. Though I pray for the lost on

  56. occasion, I don't find myself praying for the lost as often as

  57. I should have. I don't find myself looking at

  58. the situation of those who are without Christ and that bringing

  59. me to a place of prayer and brokenness for their souls.

  60. We're going to see Paul teaches the exact opposite here Today.

  61. He's going to teach us to pray evangelical prayers for the

  62. unbelieving, for the lost, the lost of all social or economical

  63. backgrounds, for the lost of all races, religions, nationalities,

  64. backgrounds, whatever they may be.

  65. He's going to use terms like all men and everyone to describe

  66. them, and he's going to point to the church to pray for them.

  67. And I pray that we would learn this today.

  68. I pray that we would learn to pray for the lost and that we

  69. would respond in obedience to what we are going to learn

  70. today. Praying for unbelievers, though

  71. it is often neglected in today's church, The Church of yesteryear

  72. founded of great importance, the early church founded of great

  73. importance, the Church Fathers walking in obedience to the

  74. commands of the apostle Paul that we'll see today, who

  75. received what he received from Christ himself, found that

  76. praying for unbelievers was an important part of the

  77. Christian's life. Now I don't say this to try to

  78. beat any of you up. I just want you to to really

  79. just examine your life and ask yourself this.

  80. Question. When's the last time that you

  81. prayed for someone who was an unbeliever?

  82. When was the last time that you turned on the news and saw the

  83. chaos around us of the corrupt government officials, our

  84. culture or society that is without Christ and totally

  85. godless? No, no, oftentimes we look at

  86. those things and we in our self righteousness complain about

  87. them. They're over critical about

  88. them. But I'm talking about seeing the

  89. lostness of the unbeliever and then that driving you to your

  90. knees in prayer, pleading to God for their souls.

  91. Because what Paul is going to teach the church here today is

  92. what was passed on to the early church fathers that they echoed

  93. throughout church history. It's important that it's crucial

  94. that we as believers pray for the unbelievers.

  95. In fact, Justin Martyr, you've heard me mention Justin Martyr

  96. many times, who lived between 10165AD, one of the early Church

  97. fathers, He said this, he said we.

  98. Pray for all men everywhere asking that they may come to

  99. know the truth. He says that in his writing

  100. entitled The First Apology, praying for the unbelievers, all

  101. men everywhere, they would hear the truth of the gospel.

  102. Tertullian, another church father, he said this We pray for

  103. all emperors that God may grant them a long life, secure

  104. dominion, a safe home, brave armies, a faithful Senate, a

  105. righteous people and a peaceful world.

  106. The thoughts of Tertullian and praying for the unbelievers

  107. origin is another. And he said this we pray not

  108. only for ourselves but for those who persecute us.

  109. That they may be converted and obtain mercy.

  110. Now, that's not often how we pray for the unbelievers who

  111. hate us, is it? We pray that God would just take

  112. care of them, That God would just remove them from our lives.

  113. That God would just do something about them.

  114. You know the greatest thing that God could do for our enemies,

  115. Save them and make them our friends.

  116. Save them and make them like minded with us as we were like

  117. minded with Christ. The early Church fathers

  118. understood this. Cyprian of Carthage, he said, We

  119. ask and entreat that the mercy of God may be poured upon all.

  120. That's on his in his discourse on the Lord's Prayer that God

  121. would pour his mercy out on all, you say, Well, Kirk, we've read

  122. the end of the book and we know that God's not going to actually

  123. pour his mercy out on all because there are going to be

  124. those who spend an eternity in hell.

  125. And that is true. You don't know who they are and

  126. I don't know who they are. And we are not called to decide

  127. who God gives mercy to and who. He withholds mercy from We are

  128. called to bow the knee, and to bow the head, and to bow the

  129. heart, and to pray for. All men that God would have

  130. mercy on their souls, just as he has had mercy on our John

  131. Chrysostom, he said. This, he said nothing is so

  132. characteristic of a Christian as to pray for his enemies.

  133. I want a thought. Nothing is more characteristic

  134. of a Christian as to pray for his enemies.

  135. How can we come to that conclusion?

  136. Because it's Christ himself who prayed for his enemies.

  137. Can I tell you this, This once enemy of God is now Son of God

  138. Most High because of a prayer that Jesus prayed for me in John

    John 17 chapter mention

  139. chapter 17. Don't you forget that when he

  140. prayed for all those who would believe I was one of those, He

  141. prayed for me, knowing full well that I would spend the beginning

  142. part of my life as a direct enemy of God because of my sin.

  143. Yet in His grace and His mercy, He sought to deliver me and he

  144. petitioned the Father on my behalf.

  145. Augustine Hypo, you're familiar with Augustine, I hope he says

  146. the church prays for unbelievers that they may believe, for

  147. believers that they may persevere.

  148. What a heart of the church Fathers that he would pray for

  149. the unbelievers. And the only prayer that we can

  150. really pray for an unbeliever is that that they would believe.

  151. Won't open their eyes so that they can see.

  152. Forgive them ears to hear and eyes smothered with your salve

  153. that they may see. Give them a heart, a new heart

  154. that longs for you and beats for you.

  155. It's God and God alone who can do that.

  156. And that ought to be the way that we pray for the

  157. unbelievers. Just Paul is going to in these

  158. first 8 verses, give us a call to pray.

  159. Please see the context of it that he is.

  160. Calling on the church to pray for the lost, the unbelieving

  161. and the dying. May we be convicted, may we be

  162. challenged, may we be obedient to that call in our lives as

  163. believers. He says in First Timothy chapter

    1 Timothy 2:1

  164. 2 verse 1, he says, I urge then first of all, that requests,

  165. prayers, intercession and Thanksgiving be made for

  166. everyone, for kings and all those in authority, that we may

  167. live peaceful and quiet lives and all godliness and holiness.

  168. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be

  169. saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  170. For there is one God and one mediator between God and man,

  171. the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom.

  172. For all men. The testimony given in its

  173. proper time and for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an

  174. apostle. I'm telling you the truth.

  175. I am not lying and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

  176. He says in verse 8, I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands

  177. in prayer without anger or dispute.

  178. Let's pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus, we

  179. come to you now. We lift this text to you.

  180. Well, then we ask that your Spirit would teach us today as

  181. we see this text unfold before our eyes, the very word of God

  182. would I pray that we would be driven and urged, as Paul says,

  183. to lift up others in prayer, namely the lost, the

  184. unbelieving. Now that you would teach us how

  185. to do this, You would teach us how to do this effectively.

  186. You would teach us to do this just as Christ did this God.

  187. I now even pray for the lost who may be in this service.

  188. I pray not for their health, their wealth, their prosperity,

  189. when I pray for their soul. Because what profits a man if he

  190. gains the? Whole.

  191. World yet loses his soul. God, I pray for any unbeliever

  192. who is here today that you and you alone, as only you can, do

  193. but shower Your mercy and Your grace and Your forgiveness upon

  194. them, that You would bring them out of darkness and into Your

  195. marvelous life, showing them the depravity of their sin and their

  196. great need for Christ. Lord, I pray that You would be

  197. faithful to save those who call upon You today, as I know you

  198. will. Lord, we'll give you all the

  199. glory for it and I pray for every believer in this room that

  200. they would be moved to be people of prayer who petition the

  201. throne of God on behalf of all those who are in need of Christ.

  202. We give you all the glory and praise in Jesus name, Amen.

  203. So as we examine this call to prayer today, I want you to

  204. really understand what it is really all about, what he is

  205. really saying here. Now go ahead and tell you right

  206. off the bat, there are many verses in this particular text

  207. that get taken out of context quite frequently.

  208. I'm not going to do that this morning, nor.

  209. Will I allow? You to do that, we're going to

  210. look at it in its proper context.

  211. So that we can understand this call for Christians to pray for

  212. the unbelieving, this call for us to pray evangelical prayers,

  213. to pray for the lost souls. If you're going to understand

  214. this, the first thing that you need to take note of is Paul's

  215. approach to this. You're taking notes.

  216. Write this down. Biblical prayer must be a

  217. priority. It must be a priority to pray

  218. for lost people biblically must be a priority.

  219. Watch how Paul phrases this, he said, I urge.

  220. Then watch the next phrase. First of all, he didn't say, I

  221. want you to be great theologians, though that's

  222. important. He didn't say, I want you to

  223. memorize entire passages of Scripture, though.

  224. That's important. He didn't say that.

  225. I want you to be a great minister and servant of God and

  226. everything you do though. That's important.

  227. Before he ever gets to anything involved in ministry, watch what

  228. he says and don't miss this because it has been neglected in

  229. the church for too long, he says.

  230. First of all. That request prayers,

  231. intercession and Thanksgiving be made for everyone, he says.

  232. First of all, you pray. I urge you first of all.

  233. To pray. Paul's calling on the church.

  234. He's calling on the leaders of the church.

  235. He is calling them to pray and to especially pray for the

  236. unbelievers around them. Spurgeon, the Prince of

  237. preachers, said it like this. He said I would rather teach one

  238. man to pray and tend to preach. Oh, let us see the importance of

  239. prayer today. Let us say that we are all

  240. called to bend our knees and humble ourselves and pray on

  241. behalf of the lost and the unbelieving, Spurgeon himself

  242. saying it would be more profitable.

  243. To the Kingdom of God, one man learned how to pray effectively

  244. and for ten men to preach the Scriptures eloquently.

  245. Paul is going to do exactly that same thing and reminding us that

  246. we are to make prayer a priority.

  247. If we're going to do that, we must be devoted in prayer.

  248. Devoted in prayer. That is in obedience to God's

  249. Word, Paul says to the Colossians in chapter 4 verse

  250. two. He says devote yourselves to

  251. prayer, being watchful and thankful.

  252. Then what a sad testimony that comes out of the American

  253. church. You know the fastest way to kill

  254. attendance at church, call a prayer meeting.

  255. There are many people who are devoted to being fed the word of

  256. God. There are many people who are

  257. devoted to ministering to others physically.

  258. But when we call on God's people to be devoted in prayer, there

  259. is a huge deficiency in the American church, is it not?

  260. So we were to pull the congregation this morning.

  261. When is the last time that you petition God for an unbeliever?

  262. I'm not asking you when's the last time that you petitioned

  263. God for your thought need? The last time that you

  264. petitioned God for something that you desired or that you

  265. wanted? Because that's how the American

  266. church has been taught to pray, and that's not biblical.

  267. Prayer. When is the last time you had

  268. compassion? That supermarket clerk who just

  269. by simple expression, in a short conversation, revealed her

  270. losses or his losses. When's the last time that you

  271. went to your car, you prayed for them?

  272. When's the last time that you had that employee that sat next

  273. to you talking about the sexual immorality and the drunkenness

  274. that they participated in the past weekend with no regard to

  275. God and His commands at all? When's the last time that you

  276. didn't look down on them with yourself righteous view down

  277. yourself righteous nose, but you were moved into compassion and

  278. humility and you petitioned to the throne of God on their

  279. behalf. God save them by your mercy.

  280. Save them by their by your grace, because without.

  281. You, Lord Jesus Christ, they are as hopeless as I once was.

  282. There's a deficiency in the church, in our devotion to

  283. prayer, disobedience toward God's Word.

  284. Paul says devote yourselves to prayer.

  285. Are you devoted to prayer? Are you devoted to prayer?

  286. Is it obvious that you're obeying God in regard to this?

  287. Are you devoted to prayer and dependence upon God's power as

  288. you pray? And that's what prayer truly is,

  289. isn't it? And it's most.

  290. Simplified definition, prayer is simply this dependence upon God.

  291. You know why the enemy loves to distract us from praying?

  292. And doesn't he do a great job at it?

  293. He loves to distract us. From praying because when we are

  294. truly on our knees in prayer, we are truly depending upon God.

  295. I can't tell you the countless times.

  296. In my life as a minister, where I've been in my office, I've

  297. been studying the Word of God, and I was prompted by the Spirit

  298. to come into this auditorium that we sit in today to walk up

  299. to one of these containers with these cards here.

  300. We call them redemption cards that have the names of many lost

  301. people, unbelievers that we know and that we.

  302. Love on there. I can't tell you how many times

  303. the Holy Spirit has prompted me to come in to take these cards

  304. and to kneel before the Father and to petition these

  305. unbelievers on His behalf. And before I make it to this

  306. door, it's probably only 12 feet.

  307. Someone drops by unexpectedly. 30 text messages go off at the

  308. same time. 15 phone calls come in.

  309. And all of a sudden the enemy is distracting me from that which I

  310. need to do, and that is to be devoted to praying for the

  311. unbelievers to take that time to throw that phone away and to get

  312. on my face before a holy God and petition Him for their soul.

  313. Crying out to him to show them mercy, dependent upon him and

  314. him alone to save them. Why is that important?

  315. Because he's the only one who can save them.

  316. He's the only one who can save them, and if I'm not praying for

  317. the lost people, I'm not trusting God to save the lost.

  318. You trust God to save the lost you.

  319. Simply put, if you're not depending upon God in your

  320. prayers, you aren't depending upon God.

  321. That is the avenue to which He has given us to show our

  322. dependence upon Him. Remember what the Lord had

  323. taught our Father, which art in heaven.

  324. Hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done

  325. on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day Our Daily

  326. Bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and

  327. lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  328. For thine is a Kingdom of the power and the glory forever.

  329. Amen. Why did the Lord give us that?

  330. To teach us how to depend upon Him that entire model prayers

  331. about depending upon God in and through prayer.

  332. Now let's take that in context of what we're going to see Paul

  333. teaching here today. It is praying and depending upon

  334. God to save the. Unredeemed.

  335. Are you devoted in prayer? He says.

  336. First of all, make this a priority.

  337. Put it where it belong. We fail as evangelist if we go

  338. and share the gospel without it first being bathed in prayer.

  339. We are simply depending upon our words to convince people instead

  340. of depending upon a sovereign God to save them by His mercy

  341. and His. Grace every Saturday we have

  342. outreach groups that go out from this church to share the gospel

  343. in the community and I've been there and experienced it with

  344. them prior to ever leading leaving.

  345. We joined together and we petition God for those who we

  346. will come in contact with that God would have mercy on them

  347. simply depending upon him. Are you devoted in your prayers

  348. for the unbelievers? Depending upon God, devoted in

  349. prayer, but also diverse in prayer.

  350. Watch what he says here, he says.

  351. I urge them. First of all, there's that

  352. priority, that utmost devotion, he says.

  353. First of all, that request prayers, intercession and

  354. Thanksgiving be made for everyone.

  355. So we see that we're to be devoted in prayer, but we're to

  356. be diverse in prayer. What do I mean by that?

  357. We are to pray all kinds of prayers on behalf of the

  358. unbelievers. Ephesians chapter 6 verse 18

    Ephesians 6:18

  359. Paul says and pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds

  360. of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and

  361. always keep on praying for all the Lord's people with.

  362. All kinds of prayers and requests.

  363. There are many variations of how we should pray for others.

  364. That stands also true for the unbelieving world.

  365. He uses the term here request that we see in the English.

  366. The Greek word has a distinct meaning.

  367. It means a specific need presented to God that otherwise

  368. would not or. Could not be met.

  369. For instance, salvation. Only God can save.

  370. So if we have a burden for someone who is unsaved, why

  371. would we not take this request to the throne of God and to

  372. plead for their soul before His throne of grace?

  373. That ought to be our natural response as believers to make

  374. that request known. God, I can't save this person.

  375. The person next to me can't save this person.

  376. Billy Graham couldn't save this person.

  377. Lord, only you can save sinners, he says.

  378. Make requests on behalf of all. Kinds of men of everyone that

  379. God would do what only God can do in their life.

  380. God would save them as only He can.

  381. Secondly, he says prayers, and this is a general word, a

  382. general term. In reference to prayer, he's

  383. saying that this is general trust or a general calling upon

  384. God and dependence upon Him. This is our daily prayers where

  385. we're depending upon God. He's saying in your daily

  386. dependence upon God, depend upon Him to save souls.

  387. Let me just ask you this church, is he faithful to save the lost?

  388. Did he go to the to the extreme and do beyond even what we can

  389. comprehend in our human minds to rescue the lost?

  390. Then shouldn't we pray, trusting in the fact that He is able and

  391. willing to save the lost? Of course we should, he says,

  392. request prayers, and then he says intercession.

  393. Oh, this is where it gets really interesting and really amazing

  394. to me. The Greek term here for our

  395. English term intercession, means to fall in with someone.

  396. It means to get on the same page.

  397. With someone, and when we talk about interceding for the

  398. unbeliever and we understand that that term means to fall in

  399. with someone, let me just remind you of a couple of facts #1 the

  400. holy. Spirit is interceding for us.

  401. Constantly with groans that we can't even understand is what

  402. Paul said. Not only is the Holy Spirit

  403. interceding on our behalf, Christ himself lives to

  404. intercede for us. That's what scripture says.

  405. And so when we begin to intercede for the unbeliever, we

  406. are literally getting on the same page we are falling in

  407. with. The Holy Spirit and his

  408. intercession, and the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ in his

  409. intercession. We are.

  410. Finally, praying for the lost in accordance to the will of God.

  411. We are praying in agreement with God's intercession as God

  412. intercedes on behalf of those who need Christ.

  413. We are joining in with Christ and with the Holy Spirit and we

  414. are doing the same. What an honor and a privilege

  415. that we miss out on when we don't intercede for the lost.

  416. Pleading for the soul. Trusting in God and God alone to

  417. save them. Praying with the same empathy,

  418. the same compassion, the same zeal, the same fervor as both

  419. the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  420. Continually pray to the Father with what a privilege that is

  421. that we would be called. To intercede.

  422. That is exactly what praying in the Spirit is for all the

  423. charismatics. You want to distort it and to

  424. make it into something that it's not.

  425. For all the Pentecostals you want to twist the scriptures to

  426. fit your agenda. Praying in the Spirit is simply

  427. praying in alignment with the Holy Spirit.

  428. It is falling in with someone. When you pray in the Spirit, you

  429. intercede on their behalf. Can I just tell you today that I

  430. stand here before you, first of all because Christ was merciful

  431. to me, gracious to me beyond anything that I can even begin

  432. to imagine. Can I also tell you that there

  433. were others who fell in with the Spirit as He prayed on my

  434. behalf, namely my grandmother who diligently prayed for me,

  435. and not just me only, but all of her unbelieving grandchildren

  436. and children. And yes, I stand here today

  437. first and foremost because of Christ.

  438. I would never take that glory away from Him, but I am thankful

  439. that in His mercy and His grace, He raised up a woman who would

  440. be devoted to praying for this unbeliever who interceded,

  441. joined in with the Spirit, with the Son, with the Father,

  442. joining in with the Triune Godhead in agreeance for my

  443. soul, praying with that compassion and zeal Christ

  444. prayed with. We need to be diverse in our

  445. prayers, praying with all kinds of prayers for the lost, request

  446. prayers, intercession, and then he says Thanksgiving.

  447. Thanksgiving. Well, that's a simple term that

  448. we all basically understand. Gratitude and praise to God on

  449. behalf of others. I know it's difficult in our

  450. self-righteous pharisaical mindset sometimes in

  451. Christianity to learn to pray with Thanksgiving for lost

  452. people who come into your life. I pray that you would learn that

  453. because it is a great blessing when God draws your attention to

  454. that lost person. To take the time and to say

  455. thank you Lord, for their lives. Thank you one, that they are

  456. living and that they are still living.

  457. And because they are living and they are still living, there's

  458. hope for them. And that hope is found in the

  459. gospel. Thank you that they still have a

  460. breath in their body. That reminds me that I don't

  461. need to stop praying for them. Thank you that they do have

  462. something in their lives to offer God when they are

  463. redeemed. Thank you that I I have seen the

  464. qualities that you've already placed in them.

  465. Now redeem those qualities for your purpose.

  466. Redeem those qualities for your glory.

  467. Thank you, Lord, even for the unbelievers.

  468. They're just as much a part of your sovereign plan as

  469. everything else. Lord, I pray that you would

  470. bring them in salvation, showing them mercy, forgiveness, so that

  471. others will see your kindness to the lost, Your kindness that

  472. brings them to repentance. So he calls us to be diverse in

  473. prayer, praying all kinds of prayers, right?

  474. It's not as simple as Lord just help all the lost.

  475. Oh Lord, my Co worker Joe, who's going through a divorce and he's

  476. going through a divorce and he's going through his third divorce

  477. because he's trying to do this thing on his own his entire.

  478. Life. And he's given no regard to you

  479. and to your word. He's never surrendered to

  480. Christ. Lord, I lift Joe to you.

  481. I don't look down on Joe. He's doing exactly what lost

  482. people do, exactly what I would have done had you not rescued

  483. me. And Joe needs to be rescued.

  484. I thank you for our friendship, and I think about how great that

  485. friendship could be if you were to save Joe, bringing him into

  486. fellowship with you, Lord Jesus, and with the Father through the

  487. Holy Spirit, and into fellowship with me as a member of your

  488. church, Lord save Joe. All kinds of prayers, not just

  489. some blanket statement at the end of your prayer.

  490. And Lord, save all the lost. Now be diverse in your prayers,

  491. all kinds of prayers. But then he goes on and he says

  492. this not only all kinds of prayers, in regards to being

  493. diverse in our prayer, all kinds of people, he says.

  494. I urge him first. Of all that request.

  495. Prayers, intercession and Thanksgiving.

  496. Those kinds of prayers be made for everyone.

  497. For everyone now, you nor I will have the opportunity to pray for

  498. every single person that exists in this world, but we will have

  499. the opportunity to pray for all kinds of people in our lives.

  500. That's what he's talking about. All kinds of people, everyone.

  501. Unbelievers of all kinds. This is important.

  502. Why? Because God desires to save

  503. unbelievers of all kinds, it is His will to rescue people from

  504. every people group. In fact, Genesis chapter 22

    Genesis 22:18

  505. verse 18, reiterating His promise to Abraham, He says this

  506. and through your offspring, all nations on earth will be

  507. blessed, because you have obeyed me.

  508. He promises a blessing to all the nations of the earth, every

  509. kind of person. How diverse is that blessing?

  510. And our prayer ought to be that diverse.

  511. Why? So we don't fall into the trap

  512. of just praying for our own kind, our own family, our own

  513. friends. We devote ourselves to diversity

  514. and prayer, praying for all kinds of people.

  515. Isaiah 49, six, it says. He says it is too small a thing

  516. for you to be my servant, to restore the tribes of Jacob and

  517. bring back those of Israel. I've cut, so I'm not going to

  518. stop there. I will also make you a light for

  519. the Gentiles that my salvation may reach to the ends of the

  520. earth. It is God's desire that His

  521. salvation reaches to the ends of the earth.

  522. Now the ends of the earth is not geology or geography.

  523. Excuse me? But it is anthropology, it is

  524. the fact that the gospel is to go out to all kinds of men, to

  525. everyone, everywhere, just as the Lord commissioned the

  526. disciples to go and to make disciples of all nations.

  527. And the joy of this is knowing what happens in the end.

  528. And, you know, we get a glimpse of the end there in Revelation

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  529. chapter 5. Revelation 59.

  530. Here's what it says. And they sang a new song,

  531. saying, you are worthy to take the scroll and to open its

  532. seals, because you were slain. And with your blood you

  533. purchased men for God. Persons from every tribe and

  534. language and people and nation. What is he talking about?

  535. A diverse group of people from every tribe, every people, every

  536. tongue, every nation. And so you know who we ought to

  537. pray for? Everyone.

  538. People of all kinds, as Jacob announced a moment ago, Joe

  539. Hendricks men and his wife Amy are next door and enriched.

  540. They were here in our first service.

  541. They are visionaries that we as a church support in Oaxaca,

  542. Mexico we're to praise specifically.

  543. For those that Joe comes in contact with in Mexico that they

  544. will come to know Christ. Why?

  545. Every tribe, every tongue, every people, every nation.

  546. That is God's will. And if we are praying for people

  547. from every tribe, every tongue, every people, and every nation,

  548. we are now finally praying for the lost in accordance with the

  549. will of God. But if you only pray for your

  550. sister who's lost or your aunt who's lost, and yes, they need

  551. prayer and yes, pray for them. But Paul doesn't leave it there.

  552. He's saying be diverse in your prayers for the.

  553. Law, Everyone, everywhere. The American church has failed

  554. at this long enough. So self absorbed, so

  555. self-centered. Let us put a halt to that today,

  556. at least here at Key Life Fellowship.

  557. Let us say that we are going to make prayer for the unbeliever a

  558. priority. Why?

  559. Because the Word of God says first of all.

  560. First of all, before we do anything else that we may pat

  561. ourselves on our religious backs about church, let us drop to our

  562. knees. Let us make requests and prayers

  563. and intercession and Thanksgiving for everyone, for

  564. everyone. Without exception, all kinds of

  565. people, biblical ministers and biblical ministries will make

  566. prayer a priority. They'll be devoted in prayer.

  567. They'll be diverse in prayer. Secondly, we are going to submit

  568. to this call to prayer for the unbelieving.

  569. Not only must it be a priority, it must be without prejudice.

  570. Must be without prejudice. Watch what He says next.

  571. He says for kings and all those in authority, that we may live

  572. peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

  573. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be

  574. saved and to come to a knowledge of.

  575. The truth Here's what Paul is saying here.

  576. Paul knows that it's easy for us to pray for those that we love

  577. and those who love us. Those who are in our family,

  578. those who are our friends. But he's now going to call the

  579. church to pray for unbelievers who potentially hate us.

  580. We bring persecution in our life.

  581. It calls us to suffer. And he's refusing.

  582. And he's wanting the church to refuse to show any prejudice and

  583. how they pray for the unbelieving, but to simply see

  584. all unbelievers as what they are, you know what?

  585. They are lost, and to see them as lost, lost souls who are in

  586. need of God's mercy through Christ Jesus.

  587. That's it. We need to pray for them without

  588. any kind prejudice, praying without discrimination at all.

  589. Praying for all unbelievers, not just those who are easy to pray

  590. for. Please note what he says here

  591. for kings and all those in authority that we may live

  592. peaceful and quiet lives and all godliness and holding.

  593. He's saying pray for the Romans that are in authority over you.

  594. They're in Ephesus. That's where they are.

  595. Those who are bringing persecution into your life, pray

  596. for them. Pray that God would change their

  597. heart, that God would draw them out of darkness and into light,

  598. that Christ would save them by his precious blood.

  599. Pray for them. Why?

  600. Because this is good, and it pleases God our Savior, that you

  601. do this. That you would pray even for

  602. your enemies. And then he says, who wants all

  603. men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth?

  604. Now we have some theological problem here sometimes, don't

  605. we? There are many people who like

  606. to take that one little verse in that section, that verse out of

  607. context and see there and, and to say see there.

  608. Those of you who adhere to the doctrines of grace, those of you

  609. who believe in God's sovereign salvation, that no one is saved

  610. apart from His grace alone and is all His grace that saves

  611. them. Those of you who believe that

  612. God has mercy on who He has mercy and He judges those who He

  613. desires to judge, see what about that verse when we see it in its

  614. context, who wants all men to be saved and to come to the

  615. knowledge of the truth? It hasn't changed.

  616. They're in the context. He's still talking about all

  617. kinds of men, The examples that he uses here, kings and those in

  618. authority, that'd be the enemies to the church in Ephesus that

  619. he's writing to, and he's saying this to them.

  620. I even desire to save people from among Roman emperors and

  621. Roman authorities. I can save whoever, whenever I

  622. choose to save them. So don't think for a second that

  623. this verse out of context is going to somehow cancel all of

  624. the teachings on the doctrines of grace throughout Scripture,

  625. because that's not the case. And we see it in its context.

  626. What does it do? It reminds us that he's teaching

  627. them to pray without prejudice, to pray without discrimination.

  628. He's saying don't just pray for the people that you like.

  629. Don't pray for your fellow Jews. Even your fellow believing Jews

  630. don't. Pray for your fellow Gentiles.

  631. Pray also for the Emperor himself.

  632. Pray for the emperor himself that God would break him and

  633. bring him to his knees. Isn't it interesting how we in

  634. America forget this? We watch the news, we see the

  635. opposing political side who many times is very lost and without

  636. Christ. It's obvious and.

  637. Instead of petitioning God for their soul, we basically have

  638. the attitude, let them go to hell and they'll get what they

  639. deserve. Aren't you thankful that that's

  640. not what happened to you? I can tell you this, if I would

  641. have spent an eternity in hell, it would have been exactly what

  642. I deserved. You know what we ought to do is

  643. we ought to petition on behalf of kings and those in authority.

  644. Even if they're making our lives miserable.

  645. Even if they're passing laws that we don't agree with.

  646. Even if they are passing legislation that allows people

  647. to kill unborn babies and homosexuals to marry as

  648. heterosexuals are called to marry.

  649. Even if it's what we don't like, shouldn't we pray for them?

  650. Shouldn't we pray for their soul?

  651. Because surely anyone who votes for same sex marriage, Surely

  652. anyone who votes to kill unborn innocent babies, surely anyone

  653. who votes to emasculate children and make them into something

  654. that God never intended for them to be, Surely they're

  655. unbelievers. But what we ought not do is just

  656. to cast them into hell. Why?

  657. It's not your job to cast people into hell.

  658. But it is your job to pray for their soul God, that you would

  659. change the souls of our lawmakers, that you would change

  660. the souls of those who are in authority, yet you would change

  661. the souls of the kings. That you would redeem them, that

  662. you would rescue them, that you would save them as only you can

  663. do. Or we're beginning to see how to

  664. pray as a true believer. Now, aren't we praying without

  665. discrimination? Not just those that are easy to

  666. pray for. Pray for all kinds of men.

  667. Why? Because God desires to save all

  668. kinds of men. He desires to save blue collar

  669. workers, white collar workers, politicians, non politicians.

  670. He desires to save plumbers. He desires to save Jews.

  671. He desires to save Gentiles. He desires to save Barbarians.

  672. He desires to save Romans. He desires to save pagans.

  673. He desires to save save the rich.

  674. He desires to save the poor. He desires, desires to save men

  675. from every type of man. God wants to save unbelievers.

  676. How do we know this? He sent His only begotten Son to

  677. prove and to demonstrate His love for us and that while we

  678. were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  679. Pray for those who are still sinners that they would see the

  680. love of God that was displayed in Christ and that they would

  681. repent and turn to Christ as the only hope of salvation that any

  682. of us have. Should pray without

  683. discrimination. About any prejudice, even

  684. praying for our enemies, Can you believe that he would call the

  685. Ephesians to pray for the Roman authority?

  686. Those who persecute them and make their life miserable, those

  687. who mock them because they won't indulge in Pagan sacrifice and

  688. Pagan sexual immorality. Can you believe that he would

  689. even call on them? To pray for those kinds of

  690. unbelievers, they're enemies. Is that not what Jesus commands

  691. us to do? Well, you heard the scripture

  692. reading this morning and Matthew chapter 5, verse 43, you have

    Matthew 5:43

  693. heard that it was said, love your neighbor and hate your

  694. enemy. But I tell you, love your

  695. enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  696. You have heard love your neighbor and hate your enemy

  697. that it's OK. Americans were inundated with

  698. this, aren't we? Anybody who's an enemy to

  699. America, we need not even pray for them.

  700. Wrong. We can look at the headlines

  701. just recently, all the chaos and all the things that are going

  702. on. Christian, are you moved to pray

  703. for souls? We've all seen footage of a

  704. Venezuelan leader and his wife taken from their home and we all

  705. have opinions about it. We all have to get caught up in

  706. discussing our opinions. You know what we ought to do?

  707. Someone who can be so wicked and so vile obviously is lost.

  708. Have you bent the knee one time to pray for that man and pray

  709. for his family? Have you even thought about it

  710. like this? Perhaps God and his sovereign

  711. plan brought them to the United States.

  712. So in that penitentiary in New York, they'll hear the gospel

  713. where it's still legal to hear the gospel and to preach the

  714. gospel and to be saved. Oh no, in order for us to think

  715. about those things, we would actually have to think

  716. biblically, and then we would start praying biblically,

  717. wouldn't we? Without discrimination as Jesus

  718. did, praying for his enemies. He said, you've heard that it

  719. was said, love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  720. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who

  721. persecute you. That's where Paul got this from.

  722. Pray for those who persecute you.

  723. Why? That you that you may be

  724. children of your Father in heaven.

  725. He causes his Son to rise on the evil and the good, and sends

  726. rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

  727. What is he saying there? He's compassionate to all His

  728. general love and his general grace falls upon everyone.

  729. Pray in general that God would shower His grace and His mercy

  730. upon that lost. Soul that he has prompted you to

  731. pray for in doing so you reflect Christ.

  732. He goes on and he says if you love those who love you, what

  733. reward will you get? Speaking common sense here.

  734. I love that Jesus spoke common sense.

  735. You won't get any reward. There's nothing in that, not

  736. even the tax collectors doing that.

  737. So the tax collectors love those who love Him.

  738. And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more

  739. than others? You're not even pagans do that.

  740. Then He says be perfect. Therefore, as your Heavenly

  741. Father is perfect, what is He saying?

  742. Have compassion on all. And if you truly are having

  743. compassion on all, you will be praying without discrimination,

  744. even if they are on the opposite aisle of your political lean or

  745. your political agenda, even if they don't agree with you on

  746. certain topics, they pray for their soul without

  747. discrimination, without any prejudice at all.

  748. You'll even pray for those who hate you or even harm you.

  749. Luke chapter 23 the Lord Jesus and statement that every time I

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  750. read it, it grabs me with great intensity because I'm so far

  751. from being able to pray anything of the.

  752. Sort, but I pray. Lord teach me to pray like this,

  753. it says in Luke 2334, Jesus said, Father forgive them for

  754. they do not know what they're doing.

  755. They divide it up his clothes by casting launch.

  756. What was going on here? Well, they just tortured him and

  757. they just beat him, and they just stripped his clothes from

  758. him. And you know what they're doing?

  759. They're now gambling for his garments.

  760. Oh, I would to God that I would pray for unbelievers in such a

  761. manner. Father, forgive them for they

  762. know not what they do. Jesus even praying

  763. undiscriminately toward his executioners, praying that the

  764. Father would exercise forgiveness and mercy on their

  765. behalf or must be without prejudice if we're going to pray

  766. biblically for the unbelievers, praying without discrimination,

  767. but praying with sincere desire. Now, let me help you with this,

  768. why I say this and why I believe that Paul wants us to know this.

  769. When we pray for the lost, let us pray with a sincere desire

  770. for them to be saved. I don't want anyone today to

  771. simply just begin to pray for lost people because you've been

  772. told that's what you're supposed to do.

  773. But I do want everyone to pray for lost people with an earnest

  774. desire for them to be saved. But don't be like Jonah, right?

  775. You remember Jonah, he sends him to Nineveh.

  776. Go priest. There's going to be a revival.

  777. Jonah didn't want to do it. We know the story. 3 days and

  778. three nights in the belly of a fish was speed up on the beach.

  779. Eventually went to Nineveh because that was God's will.

  780. Jonah. Jonah goes to Nineveh and

  781. preaches one of the greatest revivals in history.

  782. They're in the capital of Syria. And then what happened?

  783. Jonah gets upset about it, doesn't he?

  784. He gets upset about it because he knew that God was full of

  785. compassion and God was full of mercy.

  786. Listen, don't pray for unbelievers and then get upset

  787. about it when He saves them because you want them to have

  788. some kind of justice in this life.

  789. No, Pray that He freed them from justice and the life to come.

  790. Pray that He lift His wrath off of them and that wrath be placed

  791. on the back of Christ. Pray that they'd be saved

  792. because of God's mercy and disgrace toward them, just as

  793. He's been merciful and gracious toward you.

  794. Pray truly and sincerely, desiring that they will be saved

  795. without prejudice, desiring salvation instead of judgment,

  796. even for the wicked and for the vile, because isn't that what

  797. you received? I can tell you this, a man who

  798. was once wicked and vile stands before you and I look out at a

  799. congregation of people who were once wicked and vile That God

  800. has had mercy on her soul was pray with sincere desire that he

  801. would have mercy on others. Ezekiel 3311 says, say to them

  802. as surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I take no

  803. pleasure in the death of the wicked, rather that they turn

  804. from their ways and live turn turn from your evil ways.

  805. Why will you die? People of Israel, you know what

  806. God was desiring there as he's communicating through Isaiah

  807. that these people turn from their wickedness and that they

  808. turn to Him. He finds no delight in the death

  809. of the wicked. That's for all the people who

  810. think that God just somehow sadistic and up in heaven.

  811. And when people who didn't acknowledge him and remained in

  812. their wickedness passed from this earth, he says, aha.

  813. Now you get to go to hell finally.

  814. It's not as hard at all. Grieves him that his creation

  815. would have fallen to rebellion to begin with.

  816. He's gone to great lengths and to great extremes to redeem many

  817. from that creation through Christ.

  818. So you don't be opposite of that.

  819. And you're looking at the unbeliever, hoping that they

  820. perish, hoping that they get what they deserve.

  821. I've heard people say that all the time, right?

  822. They'll hear some story about a serial killer.

  823. I hope he goes to hell and he gets what he deserves.

  824. I hope he doesn't. I don't wish hell on anyone.

  825. Why? Because my Heavenly Father does

  826. not delight in the death of the wicked, nor shall I.

  827. I pray that God would turn His heart toward Him.

  828. He would exchange that old filthy heart of stone for a

  829. heart of flesh. That He would raise up a man of

  830. God, even from the dredges of society, to show the power of

  831. His grace and His mercy. Maybe pray like that sincere

  832. desire for that person to be saved, sincere desire that we

  833. see in the Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 10 where he says,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  834. brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the

  835. Israelites is that they may be saved.

  836. He was grieving because of unbelieving Israel.

  837. He was. Praying that their that their

  838. hearts would be changed, that they would be saved, He said.

  839. It is my desire. It is my prayer.

  840. His desire was sincere. In fact, when you read on, you

  841. realize how sincere his desire was.

  842. You know what he was willing to do if possible.

  843. Forfeit his own salvation so that his brothers of Israel

  844. would be saved. What a prayer, what a prayer.

  845. Just say, you know what? I would lose my own salvation if

  846. it meant the salvation for my people.

  847. What a heart. What a true desire for people to

  848. be saved. When's the last time that you

  849. approached praying for an unbeliever in that manner?

  850. Lord, I would give it all away, all the mercy, all the grace,

  851. all the forgiveness, all the eternal life, so that this

  852. person who is bound for hell could be saved.

  853. Where's that heart? Where's that attitude in the

  854. church? We see it in the Apostle Paul.

  855. We see it in his writings here, teaching us to pray with sincere

  856. desire, without prejudice, no discrimination at all, desiring

  857. that the same grace that we have been shown, the same grace that

  858. we have received, would be exercised upon others.

  859. American Church, listen, we should never want anyone, not

  860. anyone in this country, not anyone across the globe.

  861. As Third World and as Pagan as they may be, we can never let it

  862. be our desire that they just go to hell simply because they

  863. deserve it. We should forgive as we've been

  864. forgiven. And if you desire that someone

  865. should go to hell simply because you've deemed that they deserve

  866. it, how much more do you deserve it?

  867. Let's be moved to pray for those who are bound for hell.

  868. Biblical ministers. Biblical ministries, according

  869. to what Paul's teaching here, they'll be doing just that,

  870. praying for unbelievers with unbiased hearts, refusing to

  871. only pray for those that it's easy to pray for, those they

  872. approve of or those they like, or those who show some kind of

  873. potential, or whatever the case may be true.

  874. Biblical ministers and biblical ministries will be praying even

  875. for those who persecute them without prejudice in their heart

  876. toward the middle. Thirdly and lastly, seeing this

  877. call to prayer, we've seen this must be a priority, must be

  878. without prejudice. It must be with a purpose,

  879. purpose, what he defines for us, the purpose.

  880. Next, he says in verse 5, and this is no accident or

  881. coincidence that he throws this in here.

  882. He's telling the people to intercede on behalf of the

  883. unbelievers, and he's going to. Remind them of this says in

  884. verse 5. For there's one God and one

  885. mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus, who gave

  886. himself as a ransom for all men the testimony given in its

  887. proper time. What is the purpose of our

  888. prayer? To point them to the true

  889. mediator. We intercede on their behalf so

  890. that they can see the one who has interceded for them and will

  891. intercede for them for all eternity.

  892. Christ, he goes on, he says, and for this purpose I was appointed

  893. a herald and an apostle. I'm telling the truth, I'm not

  894. lying, and a teacher of true faith to the Gentiles.

  895. What's going on in the world of the Apostle Paul here?

  896. He's saying this. My job, my purpose is to pray

  897. for the unbelieving Gentile believers that they may see

  898. Christ and see him for who he truly is.

  899. Pray for the unbelieving among us, he says.

  900. I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands and prayer without

  901. anger or disputing. What was Paul doing it?

  902. Paul was instructing purposeful and intentional prayers.

  903. He is telling the people and reminding the people that you

  904. must pray, pointing these people to Christ, whether they are Jew,

  905. whether they are Gentile, whoever they are.

  906. He says, now understand I've been called to the Gentiles and

  907. so I'm going to share the gospel with the Gentiles.

  908. I'm going to pray for the Gentiles.

  909. That is my role. You do likewise pray for

  910. everyone, as I pray for everyone and as Christ the Mediator saves

  911. those who. Believe, do with purpose,

  912. purposely pray for the salvation of those who are perish you.

  913. Let me just ask you this professing Christian, do you

  914. know an unbeliever? In fact, let me ask you this, if

  915. you do not know an unbeliever in your life, at least one raise

  916. your hand none. So I ask you this, are you

  917. purposely? And intentionally praying, even

  918. if it's that one unbeliever, are you praying that they would see

  919. Christ, their only hope, the only mediator between God and

  920. man? He's not calling here for

  921. needless babbling, right? In fact, Jesus condemns that

  922. Matthew chapter 6 verse 7 when he tells us not to pray and to

    Matthew 6:7

  923. keep on babbling like the pagans who think they'll be heard

  924. because of their many words. He's saying this purposely.

  925. Pray for the lost, that they would be saved.

  926. Call them by name. Name them.

  927. You know them, you are acquainted with them, you are

  928. family members of some of them you are Co workers with.

  929. Some of them. Now be purposeful and

  930. intentional in your prayers, praying for the salvation of the

  931. perishing. There's only one way to

  932. salvation, isn't there? That is Christ and so we should

  933. specifically be praying that God would open their eyes to see

  934. their need for Christ because without Christ they perish.

  935. Thomas Watson said this. He said pray that God will

  936. soften their hearts. Speaking of the unbelievers, the

  937. work is his though the prayer be thine.

  938. He says our job is to pray. The work of softening the heart

  939. of the unbeliever, that's God's job, and he will do that in

  940. Christ, and he will do that far better than we can maybe do

  941. that. Maybe pray for the lost.

  942. With a purpose and that purpose being their salvation.

  943. This is modeled throughout the Scriptures.

  944. If you'll think back with me for just a moment, those who would

  945. have prayed for the lost or the ungodly or the unbelieving, we

  946. go quickly in our minds hopefully to Genesis chapter 18,

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  947. Genesis chapter 18, there in verses 22 through 33, you know

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  948. what you see? You see Abraham and you know

  949. what he's doing. He's praying for a bunch of

  950. sexually immoral homosexuals in Sodom and Gomorrah.

  951. You know what he's not doing? He's not saying let all the

  952. homosexuals there in Sodom and Gomorrah go straight to hell

  953. because they deserve it. You know what he is doing?

  954. He's pleading with God. God, if there were just 50,

  955. surely you would save them. God, there was just 45.

  956. Surely you would have mercy on these immoral people.

  957. Surely, maybe we could find 40. God surely 30.

  958. And then 20 and then 10. Surely for 10 you won't destroy

  959. these people. What was Abraham doing?

  960. He was petitioning a God of mercy.

  961. Oh, let us learn something from that instead of condemning the

  962. lost. They're lost.

  963. That's what they do. Lost people things just as you

  964. did when you were lost. Instead of sitting around in Fox

  965. News watching the TV and complaining about the lostness

  966. of the of the lost, instead, why don't you close your eyes and

  967. bow your head and bend your knee and humble yourself before God

  968. and plead for the very souls of the lost people that you see on

  969. the screen. Because.

  970. That's what Abraham would do and that's what Jesus would do.

  971. What about an Exodus 32 where we see Moses doing the same?

  972. He prays for idolatrous Israel, interceding on their behalf.

  973. Lord, save them. Don't exercise your judgment

  974. upon them. Lord, have mercy on them.

  975. Go back and read it. How is he approaching God on

  976. their behalf? Prayer.

  977. Why were they in the condition that they were in unbelief?

  978. What did Moses desire? That God would bring them out of

  979. their unbelief and bring them in to believe?

  980. And he prayed for them. What about Samuel?

  981. In first Samuel chapter 12, verses 19 through 23, he's

    1 Samuel 12:19–23

  982. praying for sinful Israel. Israel who was always bent to

  983. rebellion, it seems, just like us.

  984. What does Samuel do? He doesn't say, God just wipe

  985. them from the face of the earth because they're stubborn and

  986. they're obstinate. They're immoral.

  987. I plea, please, for God's mercy, God's restoration, God's

  988. healing, God's forgiveness. What about Jeremiah?

  989. Jeremiah chapter 14, where Jeremiah intercedes for

    Jeremiah 14 chapter mention

  990. rebellious Judah again, rebelling at every turn.

  991. Here they are again, straying away, whoring away from.

  992. God, the one true God. Jeremiah praise for them about

  993. First Kings chapter 8 verses 41 through 43.

    1 Kings 8:41–43

  994. If you don't think praying for lost people is something that we

  995. see all throughout Scripture, Solomon prays for even the

  996. unbelieving foreigners at a time when people wouldn't have prayed

  997. for foreigners, for the foreigners that had come into

  998. their land. You know what he prayed.

  999. And while they're here, may the heart be turned to you, the one

1000. true and living God. He prayed for the salvation and

1001. the redemption of foreigners who didn't belong to the Jewish

1002. people at all. Luke chapter 23 as we've already

    Luke 23 chapter mention

1003. discovered Jesus giving us the greatest example, praying for

1004. his own executions, praying to God the Father would spare them.

1005. Acts Chapter 7 we see him following in the footsteps of

    Acts 7 chapter mention

1006. Jesus Stephen there in Acts Chapter 7 at his execution and

    Acts 7 chapter mention

1007. his stoning for his faith in Christ.

1008. He says this in verse 59 while they were stoning him.

1009. While they were stoning them, him, it says Stephen prayed.

1010. I want you to think about that for a second because I know

1011. that's difficult for the American church to wrap our

1012. minds around this. He wasn't calling local law

1013. enforcement. He wasn't begging them to stop.

1014. As they were stoning him, he prayed.

1015. What did he pray? Lord Jesus received my spirit.

1016. He didn't stop there. Then he fell on his knees and

1017. cried out. Lord, do not hold this sin

1018. against them. And when he had said this, he

1019. fell asleep. His last and dying words were a

1020. prayer for the unbelievers that were killing him by stoning him

1021. to death while it was actually happening.

1022. He was not recovering in the hospital after a brutal stoning

1023. that he lived through. His last breath was to pray for

1024. the lost people who were murdering him.

1025. Church LED us to see the magnitude of this.

1026. Let's see what the Apostle Paul is teaching us.

1027. Let us decide. Will we be a biblical ministry

1028. in regard to our prayers? Will we be like the rest of the

1029. selfish self seeking American churches, seeking only what we

1030. can get in this lifetime? It's free with purpose, the

1031. salvation of the perishing, but the promotion of peace.

1032. I end with this because this is where we stopped today.

1033. He says in verse 8. I want men everywhere to lift up

1034. holy hands in prayer without anger or disputing.

1035. Many say that maybe that goes in the next passage.

1036. Maybe it fits in this patch, as I think it stays in this passage

1037. because it is the context of prayer.

1038. Context is going to change next, the propriety, the worship of

1039. women, not actually worshipping them, but how they should

1040. worship. He's saying that we ought to

1041. pray for the unbelievers, lifting up holy hands in prayer

1042. without anger or disputing. This is prayer for the promotion

1043. of peace. You know how to make an

1044. unbelieving enemy your friend and pray for his soul.

1045. And then not only when he's saved will he become your

1046. friend. He will become your brother in

1047. Christ, and you will have unity and fellowship with God the

1048. Father, with this new brother in Christ.

1049. Second person purpose that we see here, the first purpose,

1050. salvation for the perishing. So let this be our purpose in

1051. prayer, but also let it be for the promotion of peace.

1052. Let me remind you what Jesus said in Matthew 590 said blessed

1053. are the peacemakers, blessed are the peacemakers.

1054. Paul calling these men lift up holy hands in prayer without

1055. anger disputing. Be people of peace.

1056. As you pray, pray that God would bring the unbelieving into his

1057. fold so that they can find rest and they can find peace, just as

1058. we have in the fold of Christ. And we promote peace through our

1059. prayers, through our communion with Christ.

1060. As they persecute us, as they cause us to suffer, May we lift

1061. up holy hands, praying for them without anger in our heart

1062. toward them, just as Jesus displayed or disputing.

1063. In doing so, we promote peace by portraying Christ.

1064. Doesn't the New Testament call us to live such godly lives that

1065. even though they insult us and they persecute us, in the end,

1066. they know they have nothing to say about us?

1067. Oh, if we were a people who were devoted to lifting up holy hands

1068. in prayer, not being angry when we watch Fox News or see the

1069. world crater around us, not getting in into endless disputes

1070. over controversial crazy issues that we see come up today,

1071. conspiracies and the like. Wouldn't it be better if the

1072. world saw us, its men and women, lifting up holy hands in prayer,

1073. refusing to be angry as Jesus refused to be angry at those who

1074. took his life? What would happen when the lost

1075. world see us, sees us praying like that?

1076. What's going to happen? Your Christ likeness is going to

1077. promote peace because they will see not you, but they will see

1078. the Prince of Peace and then through you, you will be doing

1079. what Paul says to do in Romans chapter 12 verse 18, where he

    Romans 12:18

1080. says if it possible, as far as it depends upon you, live at

1081. peace with everyone. How do we do that?

1082. Holy hands lifted in prayer, refusing to be angry and

1083. refusing to dispute with unbelievers simply to petition

1084. God for their lost souls, pointing them to Jesus Christ as

1085. we preach the gospel to them, as we share with them the love of

  1086. Christ. Biblical ministers, biblical

1087. ministries, we praying with intention and with purpose.

1088. Let us be that. Let us be that you men who are

1089. here today, you are a minister in your home.

1090. You moms who are here today, you're a minister in your home,

1091. minister to your children. Pray for their souls.

1092. Let us be obedient to what we've seen this morning.

1093. It's going to look a little different here at the end.

1094. I've already mentioned up up front here in these wooden

1095. containers, they're, you'll find yellow and green and blue

1096. redemption cards on these hundreds of cards that are here,

1097. the names of loved ones and friends and families and maybe

1098. even enemies that others believe to be lost.

1099. They have asked that we, the church, would pray for them.

1100. Many of you, you've taken many opportunities to do that.

1101. Some of you I've never one time walked 25 steps to pray for a

1102. name on a card that God would show them mercy and forgiveness.

1103. And I pray today that that changes forever.

1104. And we would utilize this time here at the end of the service,

1105. not for ourselves or our needs for the needs of the

1106. unbelievers. What do they need?

1107. Christ in a moment as I pray, going to ask our invitation

1108. counselors if you would come forth standing to my right and

1109. to my left. Perhaps you're here today and

1110. you're an unbeliever and you don't know Christ.

1111. And God has made that clear maybe in the weeks and the

1112. months past. And you know that today you need

1113. to surrender to Christ. You've heard the gospel, you

1114. know that you're a Sinner. You know you have a great need

1115. for Christ, and today I pray that it would be the day that

1116. you repent of your sin and you turn to Christ.

1117. If that's you, I'm going to ask you to do something simply to

1118. come up to one of these people, my right, my left.

1119. And all you have to do is tell them I need to know how to be

1120. saved, and they're going to show you how to be saved biblically.

1121. For the rest of us, may we hear this call to prayer.

1122. May we be obedient to pray for the lost.

1123. Perhaps someone that you know whose name's not on this list.

  1124. There's pens here, there's empty cards.

1125. Put their name on there that others would pray for them as

1126. well. Very startling statement from

1127. the ministry of Jesus Christ constantly grips me as a pastor

1128. and as a man of God. I pray that we never become

1129. this. Jesus walked into the temple

1130. after weaving a whip together, and he drove all the money

1131. changers and all the crooks from the temple and he drove them

1132. away with this statement, says. My Father desires that this be a

1133. House of prayer, but you have made it a den.

1134. Thieves. You've only come here to get

1135. what you can get over and over and over and over again.

1136. Yes, maybe what you get is good theology.

1137. Maybe what you get is good Bible teaching.

1138. But you were all about you getting.

1139. He says shame on us, this should be a House of prayer.

1140. Be humble yourself. Will you petition the lost and

1141. the dying at the throne of God this morning?

1142. Although we love you, we thank You for Your Word, we know that

1143. it will accomplish what you set out for it to accomplish.

1144. Bring us to our knees. Make us the people of prayer, as

1145. you desire and as Your Word teaches us to be.

1146. May no one that we know spend an eternity in hell because we did

1147. not pray for them. Jesus, you've been listening to

1148. Key Life Fellowships Pulpit Ministry podcast.
