Press, Press, Press, Press, Press

We're going to be in Philippians, chapter 3, today, and I'll begin in verse 12. It'll be on the screens for you. I'm not going to make you stand up, unless you just want to Feel free to stand up, but don't, don't, don't have to, You don't have to. I shouldn't offered you the opportunity. It's a little weird.

Philippians 3 · chapter mention

Then the random person stands up, Very spiritual, And if you're standing and I can't see you, I'm so sorry. You're so spiritual. Is it on the screen? It starts in verse 12, right, Am I wrong? Okay, cool, Verse 12.

Not that I have already obtained all of this or I've already arrived at my goal. Now, this is Paul. He's talking about all the gains that he's had in life: Pharisee of Pharisees, u tribe of Benjamin, all of these amazing accolades that Paul would have received as a learned man in the law of Moses. All of that stuff he has considered loss, rubbish, scuba, in light of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus. And so Paul's built that case up that all things are loss in light of the surpassing value of knowing Jesus.

And Paul, very pragmatic, he's a, he's a practical person. He then jumps in with kind of his process whereby he's considered everything lost. So now, what does he do? And he says this: "Not that I have already obtained all of this, all of the participation in his sufferings, all of the becoming like him in his death, all of the attaining to his resurrection from the dead". He says, "Not that I have already obtained all this or I've already arrived at my goal, but I say this word with me: Press".

Say it again: All right, Not that I have already obtained all of this or I've already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. I think a lot of us think our faith is 100% inactive, because Jesus died on the cross for our sins, rose again on the third day, and when we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, then we have life abundantly and we have no activity necessary. It is by grace. You have been saved through faith, not that of your own, so that no one may boast: You didn't do anything other than accept your salvation. But then we act like our faith does not require action.

And I'm going to tell you this. I'll probably say it at the end. This isn't one of my points. I'm going to tell you this: We, We walk with God daily as an expression of what God has done for us. We don't walk to impress.

We did nothing to obtain salvation. It doesn't impress God because all of your works are but filthy rags. Nothing you can do can give you the inheritance you look for Only what Christ Jesus did. There's nothing you can do to obtain salvation. And Paul says: "Not that I've already obtained this".

But he says this: "I press on". This is Paul's expression, that I press on. He says this: "I press on toward, oh, to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me". Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. It's interesting that Paul repeats himself.

When Paul repeats himself, it's very important for us to pay attention to. I don't know if you knew this, but when they were writing Scriptures way back in the day, they had what they call papyrus. Say that word with me, papyrus. Papyrus was a limited resource. There weren't like unlimited trees back in the day, And they didn't even get that from trees.

They got it from reads and water And there's a whole bunch scientific process that I learned in textual criticism that I'm not going to repeat to you now, But I need you to know that getting papyrus was not a cheap thing. Getting someone who could write this and then mail this was not a cheap thing. So when they wrote something twice, it wasn't because they just like to repeat themselves, Like your pastor here. When they repeated it twice, it was because they really, really, really, really, really, really, really really wanted to impress upon you the importance of the things that he's saying. It's not that I've already taken hold of it, but one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is it, what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which Christ, or for which God, has called me: heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Now, any of you- you don't have to be a Bible scholar for this, but any of you who were paying attention- if there was one word that was repeated multiple times in the text, what was it?. Hey, look at your neighbor. Tell them my sermon title: Press, press, press, press, press.

If you know, you know I want to move on from this. Yes, I want you to think about pressing today. My first point today is going to be. Press on, Press on. Look at your neighbor, Tell them.

Press on, Press on. There's so many, so many ways that you could take this, this point, . Press on Meaning you're focused on the things of the past. You've been struggling or you have been inactive, . Or maybe someone has frustrated you and you're you're hesitant on coming to church, You're hesitant to move forward in your relationship with Jesus.

Or maybe you like Jesus but you struggle with the people, that claim Jesus and you're like I don't know. I want to tell you this: Press on. Maybe you've been completely deactivated because of shame and guilt in your past, . Or maybe someone told you would never amount to anything or that God couldn't do anything through you because you're so screwed up. I want to tell you this: Press on.

It's like a remote. Sometimes, if you want access to the thing that you want to look at for the next three hours as a bad habit in your life, it's called a TV. You just got to, press on. And if you want access to your creator, sometimes you got to stop being an inactive, passive instrument that doesn't do anything and hopes that Jesus is one day going to reveal himself to you. God is kind enough to reveal himself to us even when we are hostile or inactive in relation to him, But God loves it when we are activated As you press on.

This is what Paul says. He says: "Not that I've already obtained all of these things, Not that I've already arrived at my goal, Not that I've already taken hold of these things, but one thing I do. This is in verse 13. I forget what lies behind and strain toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me: heavenward in Christ Jesus.

And this sermon is not going to be very complicated, It's going to be very simple. But when I look around, I see a group of people. I'm not talking specifically about you. If, if it feels like I'm in your living room right now, I'm sorry. It's the spirit of God, not me.

I'm not trying to talk mess and offend you today. And if it doesn't hit you, maybe it's not your day to be revealed something from the spirit of God, Or maybe I'm completely off, But I, I'm. I'm looking at a group of people inside this room and outside of this room, who you need to be activated. Amen, .

You, you, you need to understand what Paul says. And what he says is this: He says that the reality that nothing I can do or nothing I do can give me the heavenly things that I'm looking for. It shouldn't cause me to be inactive. It should active, it should actually activate me for the will of God in my life. I say this sometimes.

I say I say we act not to impress but to express, And I want you in your life to do what Romans, chapter 12 says. It says this"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may prove what is the right will of God". And he says this: "This, this is your reasonable" He said: "We should offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, which is our reasonable act of worship, like our natural expression to the glorious things of God, to his life, his death, his resurrection, to the fact that he is the creator, the sustainer, the author and the perfector. The reasonable response to God is activation, not passivity. Amen, .

Romans 12 · chapter mention

So it doesn't make sense to me- I can, I be honest- It doesn't make sense to me that groups of people all over our country find themselves content at coming in once a week. I'm not talking mess. I'm glad that you're here. If it's your first time, Can I just? I'm just being honest for a sec.

I'm just telling you what makes logical sense to me: that if you believe, a dude died 2,000 years ago on the cross, rose from the grave, gave you the Holy Spirit to have power and authority in this world and at one day you're going to be seated in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus. It doesn't make sense that we would be content coming in once a week and sitting down and being done. I'm not even talking about the people outside of this room. I'm just talking to you.

They're not here. You know I can't really talk to them if they're not here. If you're online, I don't. It don't make sense to me that you can be content when the creator has done all the things that he's done for you that you can't- I, if you're able- figure out how to make it to the gathering at some point.

Paul casts a vision here by saying what he does. He says: "I, I've not gotten where I want to be yet, so I press on. So I press upward, So I press on. I, I keep pressing. Paul keeps pressing.

He recognizes that the will of God is so valuable and so beautiful that it takes every inkling of his being. He's got to do stuff Again. Have I, have I not been? I want, I want to make sure I'm clear. Do you have to do anything, to receive the grace of Jesus?

No. But the grace of Jesus should provoke in us the willingness to do anything. Amen, I'm I'm. If he died for you, if his blood was shed for you, if his hands and feet were pierced for you, I. If, in the midst of your hostility, he still loved you, If he was pierced in the side for your transgressions, If he spent three years doing ministry, 33 years walking the earth dealing with our difficult stuff, If he shifted the process whereby he would connect with us, If he made a radical adjustment from heaven to earth, If he did all of those things to save you from your own choices, what in the world should we do for God?

I think Paul's on to something here. He says: "Nothing I have done is special. Everything he has done is special. And since nothing I have done is special and everything he has done is special, I should put myself in this humble mode where I receive constantly for who God is, Where I'm looking for him in his word. Where I'm looking for him in his church.

Where I'm looking for him on the field. Where I'm looking for him at my workplace. Where I'm looking for him when I'm praying, where I'm looking to listen to him when I'm talking to my spouse. Isn't that difficult sometimes when you're talking to your spouse? I got home from a trip this week.

I don't know if y'all noticed I was gone last week, Didn't Aaron do such a great job?. I love it, bro, And it's funny. People started telling me how good he did when. When I got back, I think they were trying not to mess with me, but sometime, like I'm used to people texting me when someone preaches.

But Aaron, I want- I don't know if you're in here, you're probably in the second servant- I want you to know if you're in here or if you're watching later. When people don't text me, that means they assumed you'd do a good job and you did So. Kudos to you, bro. Super proud to just have a volunteer lead, be able to just pull it out like that Man. It was exciting.

I loved watching it. It was. It was super late for me when I watched it. Live, but man, what a good opportunity. But I was gone, and when you're gone for a week, things change at the household.

And I got back and my wife did an amazing thing. She, you like, finalized my meditation, our meditation room. Such a beautiful thing that you did. And the first thing that I noticed is that my big island in my kitchen is not got like patterns on it, It's just solid. You know, thing about solid like no pattern islands is that you have to wipe them down every 30 seconds.

You know, anyone know what I'm talking about? It's miserable. So the first thing I noticed was that there were there. Was it needed to be wiped down? And so the first thing I say was: did y'all clean anything while I was go?

I know, I know, John, It was terrible, It was terrible And y'all think I'm not going anywhere with this, But in that moment I was reminded of the fact that I need the grace of Jesus, And the grace of Jesus should activate me, not toward this selfish hostility toward people around me, but it should activate me toward my wife in a loving way, because the Bible says that in relation to my wife, I'm kind of like Christ to the church And so I need to start acting like Jesus. It wasn't because I wanted to get saved better that I need to treat you well. It's because of what Jesus did to me that shows me how I should respond, And that's just in a nuanced way. But in every aspect of your life it should not be a crazy thing for you to donate it to the Lord. I did go on this trip last week.

It was a crazy trip. If you didn't know, I went to They say, since we're live, I can't say exactly where I went. I went to Southeast Asia. Most of you know where I went. It was a place where there's tuk tuks and rick shaws and they say, da, vad for, thank you, all that other stuff Namaste.

All right, you got where I'm going, Okay, cool. So I went there and you know I've been to third world countries before. But it was a really good reminder as to what God is trying to do in the world, that he didn't just die for me to sit here and be chill. In fact, he died for all of us so that we would take the mission of the Gospel and share it with the rest of the world, And there are about 1.6 billion people in that country. Most of them have never heard about Jesus, And so it's just a good reminder that the grace of Jesus that's been lavished on us, like it's a luxury that we have the grace of Jesus, Like most people don't hear about that stuff, And so I just want to encourage you, inspire you, activate you in any way that I can to not be content with the minimum activity in relation to Jesus.

Paul says: "I press, I press, I press". I told him this sermon: "Press, press, press, press, press" because he repeated it like a million times. He's saying that it takes me a lot of energy. I don't want to say effort, cuz effort gets misconstrued for trying to win salvation. Y'all know I'm not talking about that, But I want to say it takes a lot of energy in order to receive the grace of Jesus and then be a person who shares it with other people, that donates his life to the will of God.

And I've been thinking about, like, what does it take for me to impress upon you the importance of pressing in your faith? And I started to think about the people in the room who maybe you're not like where God would want you to be, Or maybe you're exactly where God would want you to be for right now, but God wants you to move forward in your faith. You know what I'm saying. It's like if you start off and you trusted in Jesus last week and you get baptized and then you're sitting in and you're not quite ready to serve because you haven't radically shifted everything in your life. You're not ready to join a small group because God's still working on some things in you.

I totally get it If right now, where you are is in this place, where you can come in here and receive it and try to apply it through your life. But at some point look at your neighbor, say it's got to happen. At some point your activation needs to continue to improve. Paul says: I press on- And I quote this all the time I press toward the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus, pressing and I'm not. I'm not one of those gym bros.

I just want to be clear. But just going to give you a real image, for don't think of me like that. I'm not a gym bro, but I'm going to show you a push-up. Can I show you a push-up real quick. I don't want you to judge me for it, because everybody's going to be like "What a till.

He's up there doing gym bro stuff, and then he's probably going to take a picture of him". No, I'm just going to show you. No, All right, So, all right. So. So diamonds- y'all are crazy.

Diamonds was two weeks ago. Shine bright like a diamond. See, everybody can do one. Hey, I don't need no armchair quarterbacks over here.

All these people don't do push-ups in their free time, trying to tell me how to do it. It's crazy. I heard all the people talking. I know you don't do push-ups. See, that was one.

That was one. We can all do one, can't we? Hey, Hey, . You want to press on?.

Is Jake in here?. Is that Jake back there? No, that's not Jake.

Oh, Jeff, Why'd you come up here?. You think we're going to do a competition? You're crazy. All right, I just I want to do an experiment, because faith is a lot like pressing continually.

. Yes, sir, . Every day, Paul's. Paul's using an active verb there, It's not a passive verb.

He's also using a continuous verb there. It's not something that starts and then stops immediately. It's not a that's a Greek thing, It's. It's continuous, It's active. So the pressing means that when I wake up in the morning and it's a bad day and, I'm not really in a good mood, I've got to press inward in my relationship with God so that I can have a better attitude, so that the day is a little bit better and that God gives me the opportunities, or at least I see the opportunities that God gives me.

And then midday my boss gets frustrated at me. And then I've got to. I've got to really press inward in my relationship with God to respond in grace and respond in teachability rather than respond in defensiveness and frustration. And then when I get home and I go hang out with my kids- who don't listen to me the first 10 times I tell them something they eventually do. I got to.

I got to press inward to remind myself that God gave me those children to steward. So I've got to. I got to press in order to love them the way that God's called me to. But then I still got a wife and then I still got stuff to do at home and I got stuff to do at church and I'm a manager. So I've got staff.

That I've got to manage, and then I've got other things I've got to manage. Jeeoff, how many jobs you running right now? Just two. - Just two. Most of us just doing one.

That's a whole lot. And so, in order to do that effectively, while still showing up at church in the morning and serving, and then coming and sitting, and then going to small group during the week- right, it takes pressing, doesn't it? So I just want to see. I want to see how much you can do. Let's do some push-ups.

. How many think you can do?. Lay them out. - Yeah, do them.

Let's do them. I'm going to do 50s. - Oh, 50. - One, two, I'm not gonna count them for it.

. Y'all can. Count them out. That's impressive. - Oh, stay there, Stay there, Stay there, Stay there, Stay there, Stay there.

Oh, no, No, Yeah, You can stay up, You can stay. Hey, hang tight though. Yeah, Yeah, No, No, You're not done. No, Because, Because here's the thing You can- you can stay in normal position. You don't have to go down.

That's stressful, man, Cuz I got to talk for a sec. You stay there Because, cuz here, here's the thing It. It reminds me of the feeding of the 5000, where Jesus asked the disciples to do something that was beyond what they could do and they had to bring it to him. And often what happens is, this, this life of following Jesus requires me to press so frequently and so intensely that I get to where I'm limited. And then I got to continue to press.

Now you're at 50. Let's continue. He wasn't even. Oh, man.

See, sometimes y'all just stop earlier than you can. He didn't go all the way until he was done. I'm so impressed. Do you work out? - 10 more.

- 10 more. You got this. Sorry, I'm trying to get to the point where we all get in our faith once in a while. No, you're not done, . I'm just kidding with you.

. All right, I'll leave it up. I'll leave it alone. I'm going to get somebody different next time, somebody who don't make me look.

But here's the thing: You want to stay here for a second. Say it one more second. So here's the thing I found in my life: that not only does God try to push me past what I'm comfortable with so that he can do something special, right, But it requires me to press to get to my limits. I heard somebody say that sometimes you got to be in a position where you can't, solve the problem in order to see God actually give you a solution, right, And so it's an interesting thing. I've heard this when it comes to, like, mission trips and things like that.

I never forget. I heard a story one time where there was this guy who went, didn't speak the language. I don't know why he's in another country not speaking languages. That's weird, but he had a translator with him and he was carrying this cross. I probably told this story before, And when he was carrying this cross, he, like got separated from the translator and then he starts speaking the Gospel in front of a group of these people, because he didn't speak the language, So he just spoke it in English and then, by the end of it, people naturally heard him.

It was interesting that he reached his limit and God stepped in. We see this all the time throughout Scripture- that God will step in. But then there's another scenario that gets really difficult for us, And this is what I think prevents many people from getting started in the pressing process. How many of you would have said no if I asked you to come up here and do 50 push-ups. Just raise your hand.

Be honest, I know you can't do them. I just happen to get lucky with this guy. I should have looked at the vein veins in his arms and then moved to the left and found somebody different. Where's Jake at?

Where's Jake? I know I try for Jake cuz he looks like he can do a lot, but he's probably limited. I'm kidding. No, Here's what I know about Jake. What I know about Jake is he had a shoulder issue.

. All right, . And what I know about me right now is I've got a shoulder issue. I'll be 39 next, .

Yeah. And so what happens is when I go and do push-ups is like Oh, pop, pop. You can't hear it. But I'm just telling you there's a pop, You could hear it. Yeah, there's a pop right here.

I don't know what it is. I got a, a cheap MRI in Southeast Asia where I went, and it was like a hundred bucks, guys, And I need to get a radiologist to read it. So if you know someone, there's something wrong with my shoulder. And so here's. I was talking to my old personal trainer and here's what I what I asked him.

I said: "Hey, what do I do? Because I've still got to grow, I've still got to develop, I've still got to stay in shape, I've still got to be active, . But this hurts". And he said: "What you need to do". You know what he said.

He said: "You got to. You got to. You got to change the way that you press", . And so what he told me was: you got to go kind of like neutral grip. And what that did was it significantly helped me.

You don't even get a pop anymore. Now I'm still in trouble up here, but when I shift to neutral it's a little bit better And you can go sit down, Give my hand real quick, . And for right now, for for many of us, we, we struggle to step into our walk with God, We hear this command to press onward and we, we are immediately bombarded with the reality of our past. We're immediately bombarded with the reality of some of the issues we presently have that will inhibit us. Or, let's be real, some of us are just immediately bombarded with all the excuses that will pre prevent us from spiritual success.

And they're- some of them are legit, Like there's some people who are like: "Well, my spouse doesn't want to come to church, or my spouse is not interested in participating in this with me, or my kids won't come, and so I want to be flexible with them. So, rather than be obedient, I'm going to let my kids kind of control what happens". I can, I can keep going with this. My boss told me I have to do this, And I'm not just talking about church, I'm talking about in your walk with God. I didn't get the education that other people may have gotten.

It would have been nice to grow up in a Christian household, because it would have enabled me to understand this a little bit better. We've all got these different things, And so what I want to tell you is, whatever the injury that might inhibit you, you still call the press. And what you need to do? Look at your neighbor, tell them this. Change how you do it, make an adjustment.

You might find it's a slight adjustment. Those of you, Those of you, if you're honest with yourself, you struggle with reading in general. You failed every reading course or or whatever, and you're like: "I'm not a reader". I've heard people tell me that all the time. It's just that they don't like to read.

Well, guess what They got? Audio Bible. Change the way you press.

So, like I, I can't. I can't make church. We make it real easy online, right there. That's right.

. But listen, it's still easy. Change the way you press. Sometimes you've been asking your boss to get off work so that you can come to church and do what God's called you to do. That's pressing, right.

You're pressing in to your boss. He's been telling you no And what you need to do is change the way that you work, Because if you're not excellent, why would he tell you yes when you're asking him to get off work and you're blaming your boss for not being able to come to church, but really it's your bad work, ethic. Change the way that you press. I've learned in life that God has endowed us all with the opportunity to know him at a deeper level, But we all have injuries or preventatives. We all have what Paul would say thorns in our side.

But Paul, the person who knows he's got a thorn in his side- Second Corinthians tells us quite a bit about that- Is the very one saying that there's nothing I can inherently do to obtain salvation. So what I'm going to do is everything that I possibly can. I'm going to press toward the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus, And in verse 15, he says this: All of us, then, who are mature, should take such a view of things, And if, on some point, you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us say this with me, This phrase: live up.

Oh, you didn't say it with me, Sorry. Only let us live up to what we have already attained, . Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, And, just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For, as I have often told you with tears, or before and now tell you again, even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction.

Their God is their stomach and their glory is their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things, But our citizenship is where, In heaven, - And we eagerly does it say passively, Eagerly, We eagerly await a savior. It's not like I hope he returns someday. It's not like clicking through the news: Man, this world's going to hell in a hand basket. It's not even being active in the wrong categories, It's not even going out there and saying the end is near, while you're judging everybody in a way that Jesus wouldn't have called you to.

It's eagerly awaiting our savior Eagerly. There's a parable of the 10 virgins. You know that one. What they did was they lit their lamps and then some of them kind of let their lamps go out. Then Jesus returns.

Their lamps weren't lit, And so they. They didn't get to interact with the bridegroom. I should have paraphrased that one way better. Point is: there's an expectation from our creator that we would eagerly await his coming. And he's coming again.

. I don't know when it is. The Bible tells us a little bit about how that's going to look, But what I do know is I would rather be on the side of people who eagerly await, who are expectant of what it looks like. Many of us are going to be caught off guard.

So, oh goodness, Jesus, you returned. I was going to get it together. Oh, Jesus, you returned. I was going to start going to church. Jesus, you returned.

I looked at the Bible several times and I know it's got dust on it, but I listened to it one time And I'm not trying to make you feel judged or inadequate. Wherever you are is where you need to start. Wherever you are is not something to be guilty about or feel guilty and shamefilled about. Paul even says it.

Forget what lies behind That. Past life is behind you, Whether you've trusted in Jesus or not, that past life is behind you. And right now is this crucial point in your life where you can say: "I'm going to eagerly await my savior. I've confessed with my mouth, I've believed in my heart that Jesus is Lord". So it's going to be a whole life of expression And nothing I do is going to impress him.

But until he comes, I'm going to adjust any way I need to press upward toward the call of God who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control- This is Jesus- will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. I'm gonna end with this. I don't know where I'm at on time, but I'm gonna end with this. There's a weird dynamic that occurs in this process that we're talking about. On one side, I've told you that we should press, We should spend our entire lives seeking hard after our creator.

As an expression of love toward God, because of his grace toward us. We should donate our entire lives to him. I've said that, this, this message, but in Romans, chapter 12, and in this passage it tells us something else that's attached to this dynamic. It says that let's go 12:1. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed.

Romans 12 · chapter mention

That's not active, It's passive. Be transformed It's a, it's a B verb, like like. God's going to transform me. And right here it also says that he is going to transform us from our lowly state into something much more beautiful, that, in the midst of us doing everything that we can, everything that we think of in order to serve and love on our creator, he is also in the process of doing everything that he is capable of to restore us to himself, to reveal himself to us, to transform us. This is a process that we call sanctification, where I am being sainted, right, Sanctified, I'm being set apart so that God can transform me.

And here's the encouragement, in that That you truly can forget about your past, You truly can forget about your injuries and difficulties and you can move forward as hard as you can, trusting that, with everything that you give, God's going to fill the lack. Amen. That's a beautiful message and it's a message that is rooted in the very same thing: that we all claim: The good news of Jesus: that in spite of all of our inactivity or wrongly forced activity, Jesus died for us and offered us salvation to fill the gap of our sin. And what the Bible says is what I always say: that if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in our heart that God raised from the dead, we will be saved, and then we'll be set apart and sanctified by Jesus. That's the process, And if you want to enter into it, I want to give you that opportunity right now.

Those of you who are in it, I want to encourage you. Allow God to do the work by hustling for him. I call holy hustling Ho. Can we use that term? Holy hustling, Not hustling like you try to tell someone that you're bad at something so that they think you're bad at something and then you're secretly good at something.

That's the wrong kind of hustle I'm talking about. Let's work hard for the Gospel. The one question I was asking when I got over there, this was the struggle that I had. What do you mean? There's only 100 to 200 workers in this area that has a billion plus people.

Now that's talking specifically expatriate workers. Well, but what do you mean? That there's only that many workers?
