  1. Well, Father, we are very thankful to be here once again and to be able to worship you and

  2. sing and pray and, Father, we come humbly before you this morning and ask that you would speak

  3. powerfully to our hearts.

  4. And Lord, this building is not your house because there's something special about the way it

  5. was built or anything like that.

  6. The Father, your word says where two or three are gathered, that you are there among them.

  7. And because we're here, Lord, and we've come to worship you and we've come to sing your

  8. praises, Lord, we believe that your spirit is in this place, that right now, this is the

  9. house of God.

  10. But Lord, you don't just want to dwell inside this building, God.

  11. You want to dwell inside our hearts.

  12. And to just contemplate what that means and the significance behind that, that even though

  13. we're sinful and even though we're undeserving the God that you want to dwell inside of

  14. us, you want to be a part of our lives.

  15. You want to guide us and show us and empower us and, Father, I pray that this morning

  16. that we would be humble and submissive and that God, we would invite you in in order

  17. that we wouldn't just be satisfied with good music or a good sermon or just feeling good

  18. when we leave this place, but, God, we will know confidently that we have met with you

  19. and, Lord, you have done a mighty work in our hearts today.

  20. Father, I pray for every man and woman in this room, for every baby, to every old person,

  21. Lord, we pray that you would speak and guide and prepare.

  22. And, Father, as we're able to meet and to worship, we understand there are a lot of our brothers

  23. and sisters who aren't able to.

  24. So this morning we lift them up to you and we ask that you would be with them in a special

  25. way today, that you would touch their bodies and their hearts and, Lord, we continue to

  26. pray for the long family this morning.

  27. We also pray for the Gentry family, as Margaret Lau lost her sister-in-law, just ask that you

  28. would touch them, and we pray for Ms. Ruth Ann Worthington, that you would continue to

  29. help her to heal well, and I would pray for Ms. Joy Brown.

  30. And if there's any other request that's on our hearts today that we haven't mentioned,

  31. God, I pray that you would be with those.

  32. You know what they are, long before they were ever brought to our attention, so, God, we

  33. pray that you would work and move in those situations.

  34. But, Lord, in the remaining moments, as we meet with you, I pray that you would draw

  35. us near, speak powerfully, and help us to surrender to you.

  36. We love you.

  37. We thank you and ask all this in Jesus' name, and all God's people say, Amen, you

  38. may be seated.

  39. As always, it's good to see you.

  40. We are starting a new series this month talking about having a new heart.

  41. And today's title of the sermon is having the desire within our lives to have a new

  42. heart.

  43. And while we want to know God more, and we want to do better for Him, you know, there's

  44. still something within us that lurks that we don't like to admit a lot of times that still

  45. wants and desires the things of the world, whether it be money or things or positions

  46. or power or whatever it may be.

  47. There's still something inside of us that is drawn away from our Father in heaven.

  48. And it's really important as people, as we commit our lives to Christ, not just in

  49. a moment, whether it be years ago or just months ago or a week ago, but there remains

  50. this desire within us to know our Heavenly Father more, to grow with Him, and for Him

  51. to not only just give us a new heart when He saves us and forgives us of our sins,

  52. but even today, that as we walk with Him, whether it be years or decades or however

  53. long it is, that God continually gives us a new heart, that He continually works and moves

  54. in us, and that we have a desire to surrender to Him and allow Him to do it.

  55. We're going to read beginning today with Psalm chapter 51, verses 7 through 12.

    Psalms 51:7–12

  56. It's a very familiar passage.

  57. I've used it multiple times, probably since I've been senior pastor.

  58. I know I've used it at least a couple of times.

  59. But this is a very powerful passage, and I love this because this is the Psalm that

  60. King David wrote whenever Nathan the prophet comes and confronts him of his sin with

  61. Bathsheba of committing adultery, but also his murder of her husband Uri.

  62. And David is confronted with this sin, and now David has to deal with this sin

  63. with the Lord.

  64. This has to be handled in order for him to move forward in a spiritual sense.

  65. But I think it's such a wonderful passage because it reveals to us the heart of the

  66. man who is said to be a man after God's own heart.

  67. So let's look at his prayer this morning in the Psalm.

  68. David says, purify me from my sins, and I will be clean.

  69. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

  70. O give me back my joy again, you have broken me, now let me rejoice.

  71. Don't keep looking at my sins.

  72. Remove the stain of my guilt.

  73. Create in me a clean heart, O God, renew a loyal spirit within me.

  74. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me.

  75. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.

  76. So this morning as we get started, point number one, I think it's important to see

  77. that as we have a desire for God to create in us a new heart and to give us a new heart,

  78. the first thing we need to do is acknowledge the sin.

  79. And this morning you could be sitting here, and I really hope that you are,

  80. that as a believer you are like, well, I don't feel like there's any sin in my life

  81. right now that I need to acknowledge or deal with.

  82. I feel like here lately, things have been going good, been walking with the Lord,

  83. he's been helping me, great.

  84. Because in parentheses out beside it,

  85. then you need to be acknowledging the potential of sin that lurks within your heart.

  86. So as we talk about sin, there's this need for us as individuals

  87. to acknowledge the sin that we have.

  88. We need to deal with the sin that's in our hearts.

  89. And it doesn't matter if you've been saved for 50 years,

  90. or if you've never been saved at all.

  91. This applies to both of us today.

  92. That if we want to grow with God, if we want to have that new heart,

  93. we want God to continue to do that work within us.

  94. We need to acknowledge the sin that is in our hearts.

  95. And if there's no sin in our hearts,

  96. then we at least need to acknowledge the sin that is potentially there.

  97. Now that's really important,

  98. because when you look at King David as he writes Psalm 51,

  99. I guarantee you that King David, if he could do anything,

  100. if he could go back in time and undo one thing in his life,

  101. this would be the one thing that he would undo.

  102. That Psalm 51, his greatest desire would probably be for Psalm 51 not to exist.

  103. It's a wonderful passage for us to learn from and to have insight into.

  104. But I guarantee you, if you've talked to David and said,

  105. what would you do?

  106. He said, I would undo that.

  107. This is the biggest mistake of my life.

  108. And I wish I could undo it.

  109. I wish Psalm 51 didn't exist, but it does exist.

  110. But do you know why it exists?

  111. Because in the midst of David's life,

  112. as he is a man after God's own heart,

  113. it's not that David was perfect.

  114. It's not that David was without sin.

  115. It's not that David was incapable of sin.

  116. It's the fact that early on in his life,

  117. he loved God enough to pursue him and have a desire for him and to seek his face.

  118. But right before Psalm 51 is written,

  119. it says that in the time that kings went to war,

  120. David had gotten to this point in his life where he got very content with where he was.

  121. And he said, I'm going to stay here in the palace.

  122. Things have been going good.

  123. The Lord has blessed me.

  124. I'm going to send the boys out to go off the battle to fight.

  125. And I'm going to stay here and I'm going to enjoy what the Lord's done for me.

  126. We're not going to worry about what the Lord can do or will do,

  127. but what he's already done.

  128. I'm going to enjoy that.

  129. And while David is at the palace and he's not where he should be,

  130. that's whenever sin sets in.

  131. So it's not that David is a man after God's own heart

  132. because he's incapable of sin.

  133. Sin was very much there and very much ready to take hold of him if he allowed it.

  134. And in this moment, David does.

  135. He got complacent.

  136. He got satisfied with where he was.

  137. And there needs to be a desire in our hearts as believers this morning

  138. to acknowledge the sin that may be there,

  139. or at least the sin that could potentially be there.

  140. Because the truth is we're all sinners and we're all drawn to certain things

  141. within our lives that tempt us to try to pull us away from our heavenly father.

  142. And we need to acknowledge that.

  143. We need to be aware of that.

  144. And we need to be praying and seeking God's face

  145. so that he can help us refrain from these things.

  146. There needs to be a desire in our life to seek our father

  147. to refrain from such things.

  148. A desire in our life that God would give us

  149. a new heart and a desire to seek after him.

  150. That should be there.

  151. And you see this early on in David's life.

  152. So look at Psalm chapter 19 verses 12 to 13.

    Psalms 19:12–13

  153. A wonderful passage of scripture as David is writing this.

  154. He's a little younger.

  155. He's still, God is still working and moving in his life

  156. and he hasn't accomplished all the things

  157. that he had accomplished by the time we see Psalm 51.

  158. But look at verse 12 in chapter 19.

  159. David says,

  160. How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?

  161. Cleanse me from these hidden faults.

  162. As David is seeking God,

  163. David is not, he doesn't have this attitude of,

  164. yeah, I got it figured out.

  165. God, you've done this great work in my life.

  166. God, you've revealed to me

  167. and showed me all these wonderful things.

  168. Thank you for this.

  169. But no, as David is seeking and pursuing God,

  170. there's very much this realization of how unworthy

  171. he really is to have a relationship with him.

  172. How special it is to know him.

  173. And David understands the things within his heart

  174. and his mind that is there.

  175. And he's like, God, I love you.

  176. I want to be cleansed.

  177. I want to be purified.

  178. And I understand that as sinful as I am,

  179. there's probably things in my life

  180. and in my heart that I'm not aware or wrong or sinful.

  181. And I want you to reveal those things to me

  182. and to cleanse them for me.

  183. In verse 13, he says,

  184. keep your servant from deliberate sins.

  185. Don't let those things, don't let them control me.

  186. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.

  187. Totally different attitude from David in Psalm 19

  188. versus Psalm 51.

  189. David is on the preparation side of,

  190. I want to follow God.

  191. I want to be prepared.

  192. I want to do every single thing that I can do

  193. to make sure that I'm right with my father.

  194. And in Psalm 51,

  195. he's very much on the defense of, okay, God,

  196. you've broken me.

  197. You've revealed it to me.

  198. Restore to me the joy of my salvation.

  199. Don't take your spirit from me.

  200. Don't take your presence from me.

  201. Help me deal with this.

  202. Totally different attitudes.

  203. And this morning I challenged you as believers.

  204. Think about which one it is that you would rather be.

  205. Would you rather be a Psalm 19 or a Psalm 51?

  206. Because if the desire is not in your heart

  207. to seek your father in heaven

  208. and to acknowledge the sin

  209. and acknowledge the potential of sin,

  210. not just what was in the past,

  211. but even what's in the present

  212. and potentially what's even in the future,

  213. chances are we're gonna be writing

  214. our own Psalm 51s at some point.

  215. God wants us to have a heart that desires him,

  216. that loves him, that serves him.

  217. And what we see throughout scripture is,

  218. as long as people are willing to serve God

  219. and they're walking in fellowship with him,

  220. they do get to walk in holiness.

  221. They do get to do things like write Psalm 19

  222. and whenever they don't

  223. and whenever their desire is not of God

  224. and whenever their desire is to just enjoy life

  225. and to be content with what is

  226. and to just choose things of the world

  227. and they end up writing things like Psalm 51.

  228. David also wrote in Psalm 139

    Psalms 139:23–24

  229. verses 23 through 24

  230. and he says, search me O God and know my heart.

  231. Test me and know my anxious thoughts.

  232. Point out anything in me that offends you

  233. and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

  234. Again, you see this attitude of David

  235. to where he's much more

  236. on the offensive measure of pursuing God

  237. and asking God to reveal things to him,

  238. even things that he may not know.

  239. Search me, know me, test me,

  240. point out anything in me that offends you

  241. and lead me to everlasting life.

  242. Because David fully understands

  243. he cannot have everlasting life apart from God.

  244. He only gets everlasting life as God leads him to it.

  245. And this is the conundrum that we face.

  246. Because if we want a new heart,

  247. if we wanna know God, if we want everlasting life,

  248. there has to be a desire within us

  249. to seek that, to pursue that

  250. and to allow God to do it within us.

  251. Because if the desire's not there,

  252. you're not gonna let God do the work within you.

  253. You're gonna resist it, you're gonna push back.

  254. You're gonna choose other things.

  255. So point number two,

  256. you must desire to become new.

  257. As we talk about having a new heart,

  258. there's also this need within us to become new.

  259. And it's not just this moment

  260. whenever we ask Christ into our life

  261. and we get saved for the first time,

  262. but it is a continual aspect

  263. of being made new continually as we walk with God.

  264. And this scares Christians probably more than anyone.

  265. Because everybody else in the world,

  266. if they're living out there and they live in sin

  267. and they've really messed up their life,

  268. they know they've messed it up.

  269. They come to the foot of the cross,

  270. they come to Christ,

  271. and they know that they need God to make them new

  272. because they tried it their way

  273. and they messed it up royally.

  274. But for people who believe in Jesus,

  275. who were raised in the church,

  276. you had good parents,

  277. you had good grandparents,

  278. you're a decently productive citizen,

  279. you pay your taxes,

  280. maybe you've never been arrested.

  281. It's hard for us as believers

  282. when things are pretty good

  283. to understand why we need to be made new.

  284. But I promise you this morning,

  285. if you claim to be a Christian,

  286. if you claim to be a follower of Christ,

  287. there is a need in every single one of our lives

  288. to be made new continually,

  289. not just once,

  290. but to continually be made new.

  291. We cannot be satisfied,

  292. we cannot be content,

  293. we must submit ourselves to our Savior

  294. understanding that there's a work

  295. that needs to be done in us

  296. that is continual,

  297. that we cannot be satisfied.

  298. And it is so difficult for us

  299. to understand that.

  300. In Galatians chapter 6 verse 15,

    Galatians 6:15

  301. Paul writes,

  302. it doesn't matter

  303. whether we have been circumcised or not.

  304. It doesn't matter what you do,

  305. it doesn't matter what I do.

  306. There's no thing that we can do

  307. that's going to matter

  308. when it comes to salvation.

  309. What counts is

  310. whether we have been transformed

  311. into a new creation.

  312. And what we're talking about

  313. is not something that we can do.

  314. It is something that Christ

  315. has to do in us

  316. and through us.

  317. And if he does not do the work,

  318. then we have no chance whatsoever

  319. to step through that threshold

  320. into eternal life.

  321. It is something that only Christ can do.

  322. And it's not just something again

  323. that we say,

  324. oh, well, I got saved

  325. when I was like seven years old,

  326. but now I'm 25.

  327. Are you still?

  328. No one would expect you to still act

  329. like a seven-year-old, right?

  330. That would be unacceptable.

  331. A lot of people do.

  332. But it's not acceptable.

  333. And so as a believer,

  334. as you grow immature,

  335. there is an expectation in Scripture

  336. for us to be made new,

  337. to grow, to mature,

  338. to walk with Christ.

  339. But you have to have that desire

  340. in your heart to do it.

  341. And if the desire is not there,

  342. you're going to resist it.

  343. And maybe there's some of us

  344. in here this morning.

  345. It's like we got saved

  346. and we committed our hearts to Christ

  347. and we haven't been living like the devil,

  348. but we have not been giving Christ

  349. complete authority in our life

  350. to transform us

  351. and change us

  352. and give us new hearts

  353. and make us new people.

  354. And so there isn't a whole lot of difference

  355. between us when we got saved

  356. on day one versus 50 years

  357. later down the road

  358. as Christ has continually worked

  359. in some people's hearts

  360. and we can feel it

  361. and we can see the difference

  362. in other people versus ourselves.

  363. We know deep down inside,

  364. we know that Christ has called us

  365. to more than just this

  366. one-time moment experience.

  367. And think about how wonderful it was

  368. when you first called on

  369. the name of Jesus

  370. and how wonderful it felt

  371. to be saved.

  372. And to be forgiven of those sins

  373. and to know this morning

  374. that you serve a Lord and Savior

  375. who's more than able

  376. to not just give you that feeling

  377. one time

  378. but to give you that feeling

  379. multiple times

  380. as much as we allow him to work

  381. and move and reign within our lives.

  382. That should not be a thing of fear

  383. if you're a true Christian.

  384. That should be a welcome joy

  385. to think man,

  386. the feeling that I felt

  387. when I got saved,

  388. I can feel that again

  389. and again and again

  390. and yes, you can.

  391. You can know what it's like

  392. for God to work

  393. and move in your life

  394. and to be forgiven

  395. and to be made new

  396. and to be restored

  397. and to be empowered

  398. and to serve

  399. and to be used

  400. to build his kingdom.

  401. There are continuous joys

  402. that come with being a Christian

  403. that can only be experienced

  404. if we truly submit to Christ

  405. and allow him to make us new

  406. and to continually give us new hearts.

  407. And point number three,

  408. last one.

  409. It doesn't matter

  410. if you're saved or not

  411. and I don't want you to think

  412. like it's not important

  413. that you're saved.

  414. It's wonderful

  415. that you're saved, okay?

  416. Absolutely wonderful.

  417. But I don't want us

  418. to get to this thing

  419. this morning where it's like

  420. well James is preaching

  421. a salvation message.

  422. This is not a salvation message.

  423. This is a message

  424. for every single one of us

  425. whether you're saved or not.

  426. That if you're saved,

  427. if you've been saved for 50 years,

  428. God can make you new.

  429. He can give you a new heart.

  430. He can still use you

  431. and work within you

  432. and he can still give you gifts

  433. and he can still build

  434. his kingdom through with you.

  435. And if you've never been saved before

  436. to know this morning

  437. that God can save you.

  438. He can heal you.

  439. He can use you.

  440. He can call you.

  441. He can do anything he wants within you

  442. as long as you're willing

  443. to let him do it.

  444. It doesn't matter

  445. whether you're saved or not

  446. the fact that God wants

  447. to give you a new heart

  448. he wants to make you

  449. into a new creation.

  450. God very much wants to.

  451. The question is

  452. where are the desires

  453. of your heart?

  454. What is it that you want?

  455. One of the most fascinating things

  456. about God is that he tends

  457. to come and visit us occasionally

  458. to find out where we stand.

  459. And this is kind of weird

  460. because I don't believe

  461. that God does this to find

  462. for him to find out where we stand

  463. but it's more for us

  464. to find out where we stand

  465. because he knows our hearts.

  466. He knows where you are.

  467. He knows it better

  468. than we do most of the time

  469. all the time.

  470. And one of my favorite passages

  471. of scripture is in Genesis 22.

  472. Where God comes to Abraham

  473. and this is

  474. it's one of my favorite passages

  475. not because it's an easy passage

  476. it's one of my favorite passages

  477. because it's a reminder to me

  478. of who God is

  479. and how we should respond to him

  480. throughout our life

  481. because for me

  482. this probably would have been

  483. the breaking point

  484. this would have been

  485. the last straw

  486. that broke the camel's back

  487. broke my back

  488. because God calls Abraham

  489. in chapter 12.

  490. He says Abraham I want you

  491. to leave your family

  492. your home

  493. I want you to come and follow me

  494. I want you to be obedient to me

  495. and I'm going to show you

  496. what all I can do in your life

  497. and Abraham does everything

  498. that God asked him to do.

  499. He leaves

  500. he takes his family

  501. he goes

  502. he meticulously obeys God

  503. every step of the way

  504. does everything that God

  505. asked him to do

  506. and God says Abraham

  507. God visits with him

  508. on the way he says Abraham

  509. I'm going to turn you

  510. into a great nation

  511. I'm going to give you descendants

  512. as numerous as the stars in the sky

  513. look at all this land around here

  514. all this land that belongs

  515. to like five or six different kings

  516. I'm going to take it from them

  517. and one day I'm going to give it to you

  518. and I'm going to give it to your descendants

  519. and in all this time

  520. that Abraham is walking faithfully with God

  521. Abraham never gets to receive

  522. any of these promises

  523. personally

  524. with the exception of having a child

  525. and God comes along

  526. he says I'm going to give you a son

  527. well we're too old

  528. now I'm going to miraculously

  529. give you a son

  530. so that you know

  531. this was me

  532. and I gave him to you

  533. and he's a gift from me

  534. so that you know that

  535. it's the only blessing

  536. that Abraham got to experience

  537. in all of his faithfulness

  538. that God was that one thing

  539. all the other promises

  540. Abraham had to have faith

  541. that God was going to do that

  542. in future tense

  543. to his descendants

  544. that God was going to keep his word

  545. and in Genesis 22

  546. God comes back around

  547. he visits with Abraham

  548. he comes knocking at his door

  549. he says Abraham

  550. you know that

  551. that son that I gave you

  552. your one and only son

  553. I want you to take him up on the mountain

  554. and I want you to sacrifice him to me

  555. and for me it's probably

  556. where I'd be like

  557. okay God

  558. we need to have a talk

  559. because I've done everything

  560. you've asked me to do so far

  561. and this is just a little too much

  562. for me personally

  563. that's probably where I would be

  564. but thankfully

  565. we have someone like Abraham

  566. who was faithful enough

  567. and willing to serve God

  568. no matter what

  569. even though he didn't understand

  570. even though he didn't comprehend

  571. and even though it sounded crazy

  572. Abraham was still willing to do it

  573. and because of Abraham's faithfulness

  574. he goes up on the mountain

  575. he loads the wood up on Isaac's back

  576. Abraham carries a knife in the fire

  577. and he goes to sacrifice Isaac

  578. and God stops him

  579. and God provides the sacrifice

  580. and God is faithful in everything

  581. in that situation

  582. and Abraham was very much willing to do it

  583. but that passage teaches us as people

  584. that it does not matter

  585. if you got saved 50 years ago

  586. or last month

  587. or if you're not saved yet

  588. because here's the thing

  589. God will speak your name

  590. and he will call you

  591. and we are called

  592. but to merely be faithful

  593. and the whole time leading up to this

  594. yes it was very important

  595. that Abraham was obedient

  596. leading up to this

  597. but in chapter 22

  598. what Abraham had been obedient in

  599. up to this point

  600. did not matter anymore

  601. because what mattered in chapter 22

  602. is when God came

  603. and knocked on his door

  604. and said this is what

  605. I want from you right now

  606. what mattered is

  607. is how faithful Abraham was going to be

  608. in that moment

  609. are you willing to surrender to me?

  610. are you willing to give up something

  611. that you love

  612. in order to please me

  613. and do what I'm asking you to do

  614. and so everything that Abraham had done before

  615. was put on hold

  616. because the test now was

  617. what are you willing to do right now?

  618. and as believers

  619. it's so important for us to see

  620. and understand that

  621. as we follow our Lord and Savior

  622. that God can give us a new heart

  623. he can make us new

  624. and yet at the same time

  625. he comes to us

  626. and he calls us

  627. and he says listen

  628. I know I saved you

  629. I know I called you by name

  630. I know that you've given up this for me

  631. and I know that you've given up this for me

  632. and I know that you've given up this for me

  633. but today

  634. this is what I require of you

  635. will you be obedient

  636. today?

  637. do you have the desire in your heart

  638. to give this up today?

  639. in Romans chapter 6 verses 3 through 4

    Romans 6:3–4

  640. Paul writes to the church in Rome

  641. and he says or have you forgotten

  642. that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism

  643. we joined him in his death

  644. for we died and were buried with Christ by baptism

  645. and just as Christ was raised from the dead

  646. by the glorious power of the Father

  647. now we also may live new lives

  648. we love as Christians to talk about eternal life

  649. we love to talk about the blessings

  650. we love to talk about all the many good things

  651. that God does for us

  652. and how he answers prayers

  653. and all those things

  654. and very seldom do you hear people

  655. talk about this aspect of

  656. when Jesus Christ calls us to follow him

  657. we are called to die

  658. we are called to give up our lives

  659. so that he may live within us

  660. and show us and guide us and teach us

  661. and if you're sitting here today

  662. and your question is like

  663. man I don't I don't know whether God

  664. whether or not God can give me a new heart

  665. I don't know if he can make me into a new person

  666. and I just challenge you this morning

  667. that the the ability for God to work

  668. and move within your life

  669. is going to be based strongly

  670. if not primarily on the amount of faith

  671. in which you have to allow him to do it

  672. God working and moving in your life

  673. will be based off of the faith

  674. in which you have for him to do it

  675. we've been studying in Mark

  676. for the past several Wednesday nights

  677. and so far we've seen several examples

  678. of people's faith

  679. and how they come to Christ

  680. and what they ask of Christ

  681. and what they're what they're wanting from him

  682. and so far we've seen this Roman soldier

  683. who came and he said Jesus

  684. my servant he's dying

  685. will you heal him

  686. and Jesus says yes I'll come with you

  687. Roman soldier says no

  688. you don't need to come

  689. I know that if you say the words

  690. and simply say it

  691. it will be done

  692. and his faith

  693. was praised by Jesus

  694. as more than anyone

  695. in the whole nation of Israel

  696. that he hadn't met anyone

  697. in the whole nation of Israel

  698. who believed like that

  699. and Jesus healed his servant

  700. it was done because the servant

  701. because the Roman soldier believed

  702. and then you have this guy

  703. who's the leader of the local synagogue

  704. and he comes and he says Jesus

  705. if you will come

  706. and you'll lay hands on my daughter

  707. and you'll heal her

  708. I know that she can be healed

  709. and Jesus doesn't chastise him

  710. for not having the faith

  711. Roman soldier

  712. but he goes

  713. and he heals the daughter

  714. because the synagogue leader

  715. believed that if that's what Jesus did

  716. then it would be done

  717. and then you have this woman

  718. who comes along

  719. and says if I can just touch

  720. the fringe or the hem of his robe

  721. I know that I can be healed

  722. and as Jesus is on the way

  723. to heal the synagogue leader's daughter

  724. she reaches out

  725. and she touches his robe

  726. and she is healed

  727. because she believed

  728. that that's what would happen

  729. and this morning

  730. I want to challenge you

  731. it does not matter

  732. what kind of faith that you have

  733. or how strong

  734. or how weak you may feel

  735. that your faith is

  736. if you believe that

  737. God can do a work in your life

  738. and creating you a new heart

  739. and make you into a new creation

  740. it can be done

  741. because God is more than able

  742. the question is

  743. how much do you believe?

  744. how much are you willing to surrender

  745. and allow him to come in

  746. and do the work that we say

  747. that we want him to do

  748. and there's this father

  749. that comes to Jesus

  750. and he says Lord my son

  751. he has these seizures

  752. and he falls into fire

  753. and he says

  754. will you please heal him?

  755. he says if you can heal him

  756. if you want to

  757. and Jesus says if I want to

  758. do you not believe that I can?

  759. he says yes Lord I believe

  760. but help my unbelief

  761. and you might be sitting here this morning

  762. you might believe in Christ

  763. that he can do it

  764. but then there's something within you

  765. that just doubts a little bit

  766. it's like can this happen for me?

  767. Can this happen in my life?

  768. Will God do this for me?

  769. Then maybe you need to be praying right now

  770. God I believe in you

  771. but help my unbelief

  772. help me in the things that I doubt in

  773. strengthen my desire

  774. strengthen my want

  775. strengthen my mind

  776. my heart

  777. so that I can serve you

  778. because I want to be made new

  779. This morning

  780. the work that God can do within your life

  781. is not limited by his ability

  782. we serve a God who can do anything

  783. through Christ all things are

  784. possible

  785. it's not limited by him

  786. many times the things in our life

  787. are just limited by us

  788. by our faith

  789. by our desire

  790. by our resisting God

  791. to come in and to make us new

  792. to call us to change us

  793. because we're afraid

  794. what will it look like?

  795. I mean being a Christian is one thing

  796. but being like a serious Christian

  797. that's that gets weird

  798. it's okay if I post a Bible verse

  799. every once in a while

  800. if I slap a sticker on my car

  801. saying I love Jesus

  802. but whenever I start talking about it

  803. and I start praying for people

  804. and I start living this thing out loud

  805. then it's then it's weird

  806. what's the desire in your heart?

  807. Maybe this morning

  808. our prayer should be God

  809. give me that desire

  810. because I know I need to be made new

  811. and I want to be made new

  812. but give me the desire to turn loose

  813. of everything else

  814. so that I can be made new

  815. let's pray

  816. Father God thank you again

  817. for this opportunity to be here today

  818. thank you for your love and mercy

  819. and Lord we just ask that you would

  820. speak powerfully in our hearts and lives

  821. and God I will be the first one to admit

  822. it is not easy to follow you all the time

  823. it is not easy to surrender

  824. the things of this life

  825. or things in this world all the time

  826. but Lord I pray that you would instill

  827. within us a desire

  828. to seek your face

  829. and to turn loose

  830. of the things of this life

  831. that are just hindering us

  832. and holding us back

  833. Lord help us to give it all to you

  834. to surrender to you

  835. so that we can see you work

  836. and move in incredible ways

  837. and Father as we look at examples

  838. like Father Abraham

  839. who was willing to give

  840. his one and only son

  841. that because of his willingness

  842. Lord you gave your one and only son

  843. so that we could all be saved

  844. and come here today

  845. and worship

  846. and hear your word

  847. and to experience a change in our life

  848. Lord thank you for his faithfulness

  849. and Lord we pray

  850. that through the power of the Spirit

  851. that you would give us the desire

  852. and help us to surrender

  853. so that we too

  854. can see you work and move in us

  855. and through us

  856. Father we love you

  857. and we ask all this in Jesus name

  858. Amen
