  1. What's up everybody it's Pastor James and we are still in chapter 5. So we're

  2. gonna finish this up today and talk about these two amazing miracles that Jesus

  3. does that reinforce his authority over the physical world and yet it is

  4. reinforcing his authority over the spiritual world as well which is a

  5. constant communication that you're seeing from the Gospel of Mark. So let's

  6. read Mark chapter 5 verses 21 through 34 in the beginning as Jesus heals in

    Mark 5:21–34

  7. response to faith. So Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other

  8. side of the lake where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. Then a

  9. leader of the local synagogue whose name was Jairus arrived when he saw Jesus he

  10. fell at his feet pleading fervently with him. My little daughter is dying he said

  11. please come and lay your hands on her heal her so she can live. Jesus went

  12. with him and all the people followed crowding around him. A woman in the crowd

  13. had suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal

  14. from many doctors and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay

  15. them which she had gotten no better in fact she had gotten worse. She had

  16. heard about Jesus so she came up behind him through the crowd and

  17. touched his robe for she thought to herself if I can just touch his robe I

  18. will be healed. Immediately the bleeding stopped and she could feel in her body

  19. that she had been healed of her terrible condition. Jesus realized at once that

  20. healing power had gone out from him so he turned around to the crowd and asked

  21. who touched my robe. His disciples said to him look at this crowd pressing

  22. around you. How can you ask who touched me? But he kept on looking around to

  23. see who had done it. Then the frightened woman trembling at the

  24. realization of what had happened to her came and fell to her knees in front of

  25. him and told him what she had done and he said to her daughter your fate has

  26. made you well go in peace your suffering is over. Okay so we see here

  27. that Jesus has come back to the other side of the lake and this is the Jewish

  28. side okay and a large crowd had already gathered to see and hear him because

  29. this was typically what was happening. But this time something interesting

  30. happens the leader of a local synagogue comes and humbles himself before Christ

  31. pleading with him. Now a synagogue leader would have been somewhat like a local

  32. lay pastor. They would have been responsible for taking care of the

  33. physical building while also arranging the services with the synagogue on each

  34. Sabbath. For this man to come before Jesus like this would have put his

  35. position in great jeopardy. It would have been a very well respected position

  36. among the people in that area and for him to associate himself with Jesus the

  37. religious leaders of the day would have very much have quickly looked down upon

  38. him and maybe have even tried to have found a replacement for him. So this man

  39. Jairus asked Jesus to come and lay hands on her. Now some people have

  40. different faiths and that's the first thing I want to talk about from this

  41. passage is that you know when you look at what we've been reading about Mark

  42. so far the Roman soldier but Jesus could just say the word and Jairus

  43. believed Jesus must lay hands on his daughter and then there's this woman

  44. who just kind of interrupts this story okay so the story is about Jairus he's

  45. he wants Jesus to come but then this woman just kind of interrupts this whole

  46. procession of going to heal Jairus's daughter so the woman believes that if

  47. she can just touch Jesus and I think it's very interesting to realize that

  48. there's a lot going on in this story there's a lot of things that have

  49. happened in the Gospel of Mark so far there's a lot of different faiths

  50. taking place in this and Jesus never looks down on anyone's faith that they

  51. have he commended the Roman officer for saying no you just speak it and I know

  52. it can be done he didn't look down on Jairus for saying no come touch my

  53. daughter I want you to come touch her he went to touch her and he did not

  54. refuse this woman who believed that if she could just touch Jesus that she

  55. would be healed and so let's just kind of go through all of these things that

  56. are happening at once so the crowd is great and it's pressing on Jesus and

  57. following him to see a little girl being healed this woman was breaking the

  58. law of Moses by being in the crowd and touching other people and even

  59. touching Jesus the fact that she reached out and touched Jesus was against

  60. the law of Moses she was bleeding she would be considered unclean anything or

  61. anyone that she touched would be considered unclean and therefore it was

  62. against the law for her to be out in public touching other people in that

  63. manner she would have probably been divorced from her husband if she had one

  64. because of this condition because he would not have been able to touch her or

  65. be intimate with her without being unclean she also would have been cast out

  66. of her home her synagogue and would have physically suffered as a result of this

  67. and scripture talks about how she had spent everything she had to get better

  68. she wanted to get better she was trying to get better she spent all of her

  69. money to get better but she was literally just getting worse and she suffered a

  70. great deal from this so what's amazing is that when this woman touches Jesus

  71. she immediately feels her body being healed her bleeding stops and she knows

  72. her condition and she knows that her body has been made whole and if you've

  73. ever been sick before so so there's been one time in my life where I've

  74. been sick for a prolonged period of time I spent a week in the hospital and

  75. then I spent about another month and a half recovering from that and it was a

  76. miserable experience I was in my 20s and yet I felt like an 80 or 90 year old

  77. person I wanted to do so many things but literally my body was so weak I

  78. could not do it and in this moment where she has been weak and bleeding and

  79. suffering for so long she feels whole again in a moment and it would have

  80. been this incredible moment but the woman isn't the only one who felt

  81. something because Jesus felt the power leave from his body and enter into her

  82. and there's something powerful that happens when God moves and I think

  83. that's really important for us to understand is that we can feel it

  84. sense it we can see it God wants to work and move in our lives in a

  85. spiritual way God wants to move in our bodies he wants to he wants to consume us

  86. he wants to fill us with his spirit he wants to move himself into us and give

  87. himself to us and that is a very powerful thing Jesus demands to know who

  88. touches him as he turns around and begins to look and try to find out who

  89. touched me I felt power go from me who touched me but his disciples thinks he's

  90. crazy because they can't comprehend what just happened because the whole

  91. crowd is pressing around him and touching him but Jesus knows something

  92. significant has happened and he is looking for the woman and the woman

  93. finally comes before Jesus and falls on her knees explaining what she had done

  94. and I want us to see from this passage day that faith is different for all

  95. people and the important part for us to understand is that Jesus is willing to

  96. speak Jesus is willing to lay hands and he is willing to let you and I reach out

  97. and make the move and touch him in order to see our faith fleshed out and be

  98. answered by God faith is not a cookie-cutter thing so if you're if

  99. you're listening to this today I think it's really important to understand

  100. that you should not try to exactly copy someone else that maybe you look

  101. up to or you admire or someone who's been a godly example in your life yes

  102. there are ways that we can follow after people and learn from them but we should

  103. never try or make the effort to be exactly like them our goal should be to

  104. have the faith that God created us to have because what we see in Scripture is

  105. that Jesus honored the faith of everyone who was willing to come and

  106. bow down before him whether they said speak or whether they said touch or

  107. whether they said pray for my children or whether they reached out themselves

  108. and touched him Jesus was willing to honor that faith and he's willing to

  109. honor our faith today never forget the father who said Jesus I do believe but

  110. helped my unbelief because Jesus wants to help us grow let's read verses 35

  111. through 43 and finish up this this this healing passage while he was still

  112. speaking to her messengers arrived from the home of

  113. Jairus the leader of the local synagogue they told him your daughter is dead

  114. there's no use in troubling the teacher now but Jesus overheard them and said

  115. to Jairus don't be afraid just have faith then Jesus stopped the crowd and

  116. wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter James and John the brother of

  117. James when they came to the home of the synagogue leader Jesus saw how much

  118. commotion and weeping and welling he went inside and asked why all this

  119. commotion and weeping the child isn't dead she's only asleep the crowd laughed

  120. at him but he made them all leave and he took the girl's father and mother and

  121. his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying holding her hand he

  122. said to her Alitha comb which means little girl get up and the girl who was

  123. 12 years old immediately stood up and walked around they were overwhelmed and

  124. totally amazed and Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what

  125. had happened and then he told them to give her something to eat so we see that

  126. Jairus's worst nightmare has happened his daughter is dead but Jesus encourages

  127. him to just have faith even when it seems that all hope is gone there is

  128. always hope when Jesus is in it through Christ all things are possible and

  129. that's something that I think as believers we should all cling to every

  130. day of our lives nothing is impossible when it comes to Jesus at this moment

  131. Jesus refuses the crowd to go any further and takes along his inner three

  132. disciples and when he arrives at the home there's all this weeping and

  133. welling and Jesus asked what's what's all this about he makes this statement

  134. that she's only sleeping and notice that the crowd laughed at him now this is

  135. not the same crowd following him this was the crowd of people had come to mourn

  136. this girl's passing Jairus was the only one of these people who went to seek out

  137. Jesus and believed in him the rest of the crowd stayed there stayed with the

  138. girl and then began to weep and mourn over her as she passed and these

  139. people laughed at Jesus but when Jesus raised the little girl up it says that

  140. they were overwhelmed and amazed they could not believe their eyes they had to

  141. eat their crow and sometimes crow isn't that hard to swallow once again as we

  142. see Jesus working and moving in these passages we see this this thing this

  143. referred to as the messianic secret this this attitude of Jesus to constantly

  144. communicate to people don't tell others what you have seen don't tell others

  145. what happened keep this to yourselves when Jesus sent the garrison possessed

  146. man a way to tell everyone what he had done he commands the Israelite people

  147. to keep it quiet and that's kind of interesting you know it's like when we

  148. when we talked about the garrison man who was possessed he told him to go tell

  149. others what God had done for him but with a lot of the Israelite people he

  150. says now keep this quiet don't tell anyone what happened he made sure the

  151. little girl was fed he knows that even if we have been healed spiritually and

  152. physically that we still need physical nourishment so Jesus definitely gives

  153. attention to our physical needs which I think is an amazing thing that God's

  154. very much aware of our physical needs and Jesus makes sure to meet all of our

  155. needs both spiritual and physical if we simply trust in him and I think as you

  156. look at this story it's really important to see that everyone else may

  157. have laughed at Jesus but Jairus believed in him and it doesn't matter

  158. if anyone else believes as long as you believe you are the one who has to

  159. give an account to the Lord as to whether or not you believe that Jesus

  160. could work and move and make a difference in your life it only takes one person's

  161. faith to see the dead raised back to life and I think that's really important

  162. to remind ourselves of today as we walk with the Lord that if we one person

  163. simply believe it only takes one to see the dead brought back to life the

  164. question is whether or not we simply believe let's pray together father in

  165. heaven thank you so much for this day everything you bless us with thank you

  166. for your love and mercy and God I pray that you'd speak into our hearts today

  167. helping remind us of your love and faithfulness and how it only takes a

  168. little bit of faith Lord from one person to see a miracle done to see

  169. the dead brought back to life and Lord I pray today that you would help

  170. us to have faith and believe that you will work and move in a mighty way

  171. Jesus we love you we thank you and we ask all this in your precious and holy
