What's up everybody it's Pastor James and we are still in chapter 5. So we're
-
gonna finish this up today and talk about these two amazing miracles that Jesus
-
does that reinforce his authority over the physical world and yet it is
-
reinforcing his authority over the spiritual world as well which is a
-
constant communication that you're seeing from the Gospel of Mark. So let's
-
read Mark chapter 5 verses 21 through 34 in the beginning as Jesus heals in
-
response to faith. So Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other
-
side of the lake where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. Then a
-
leader of the local synagogue whose name was Jairus arrived when he saw Jesus he
-
fell at his feet pleading fervently with him. My little daughter is dying he said
-
please come and lay your hands on her heal her so she can live. Jesus went
-
with him and all the people followed crowding around him. A woman in the crowd
-
had suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal
-
from many doctors and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay
-
them which she had gotten no better in fact she had gotten worse. She had
-
heard about Jesus so she came up behind him through the crowd and
-
touched his robe for she thought to herself if I can just touch his robe I
-
will be healed. Immediately the bleeding stopped and she could feel in her body
-
that she had been healed of her terrible condition. Jesus realized at once that
-
healing power had gone out from him so he turned around to the crowd and asked
-
who touched my robe. His disciples said to him look at this crowd pressing
-
around you. How can you ask who touched me? But he kept on looking around to
-
see who had done it. Then the frightened woman trembling at the
-
realization of what had happened to her came and fell to her knees in front of
-
him and told him what she had done and he said to her daughter your fate has
-
made you well go in peace your suffering is over. Okay so we see here
-
that Jesus has come back to the other side of the lake and this is the Jewish
-
side okay and a large crowd had already gathered to see and hear him because
-
this was typically what was happening. But this time something interesting
-
happens the leader of a local synagogue comes and humbles himself before Christ
-
pleading with him. Now a synagogue leader would have been somewhat like a local
-
lay pastor. They would have been responsible for taking care of the
-
physical building while also arranging the services with the synagogue on each
-
Sabbath. For this man to come before Jesus like this would have put his
-
position in great jeopardy. It would have been a very well respected position
-
among the people in that area and for him to associate himself with Jesus the
-
religious leaders of the day would have very much have quickly looked down upon
-
him and maybe have even tried to have found a replacement for him. So this man
-
Jairus asked Jesus to come and lay hands on her. Now some people have
-
different faiths and that's the first thing I want to talk about from this
-
passage is that you know when you look at what we've been reading about Mark
-
so far the Roman soldier but Jesus could just say the word and Jairus
-
believed Jesus must lay hands on his daughter and then there's this woman
-
who just kind of interrupts this story okay so the story is about Jairus he's
-
he wants Jesus to come but then this woman just kind of interrupts this whole
-
procession of going to heal Jairus's daughter so the woman believes that if
-
she can just touch Jesus and I think it's very interesting to realize that
-
there's a lot going on in this story there's a lot of things that have
-
happened in the Gospel of Mark so far there's a lot of different faiths
-
taking place in this and Jesus never looks down on anyone's faith that they
-
have he commended the Roman officer for saying no you just speak it and I know
-
it can be done he didn't look down on Jairus for saying no come touch my
-
daughter I want you to come touch her he went to touch her and he did not
-
refuse this woman who believed that if she could just touch Jesus that she
-
would be healed and so let's just kind of go through all of these things that
-
are happening at once so the crowd is great and it's pressing on Jesus and
-
following him to see a little girl being healed this woman was breaking the
-
law of Moses by being in the crowd and touching other people and even
-
touching Jesus the fact that she reached out and touched Jesus was against
-
the law of Moses she was bleeding she would be considered unclean anything or
-
anyone that she touched would be considered unclean and therefore it was
-
against the law for her to be out in public touching other people in that
-
manner she would have probably been divorced from her husband if she had one
-
because of this condition because he would not have been able to touch her or
-
be intimate with her without being unclean she also would have been cast out
-
of her home her synagogue and would have physically suffered as a result of this
-
and scripture talks about how she had spent everything she had to get better
-
she wanted to get better she was trying to get better she spent all of her
-
money to get better but she was literally just getting worse and she suffered a
-
great deal from this so what's amazing is that when this woman touches Jesus
-
she immediately feels her body being healed her bleeding stops and she knows
-
her condition and she knows that her body has been made whole and if you've
-
ever been sick before so so there's been one time in my life where I've
-
been sick for a prolonged period of time I spent a week in the hospital and
-
then I spent about another month and a half recovering from that and it was a
-
miserable experience I was in my 20s and yet I felt like an 80 or 90 year old
-
person I wanted to do so many things but literally my body was so weak I
-
could not do it and in this moment where she has been weak and bleeding and
-
suffering for so long she feels whole again in a moment and it would have
-
been this incredible moment but the woman isn't the only one who felt
-
something because Jesus felt the power leave from his body and enter into her
-
and there's something powerful that happens when God moves and I think
-
that's really important for us to understand is that we can feel it
-
sense it we can see it God wants to work and move in our lives in a
-
spiritual way God wants to move in our bodies he wants to he wants to consume us
-
he wants to fill us with his spirit he wants to move himself into us and give
-
himself to us and that is a very powerful thing Jesus demands to know who
-
touches him as he turns around and begins to look and try to find out who
-
touched me I felt power go from me who touched me but his disciples thinks he's
-
crazy because they can't comprehend what just happened because the whole
-
crowd is pressing around him and touching him but Jesus knows something
-
significant has happened and he is looking for the woman and the woman
-
finally comes before Jesus and falls on her knees explaining what she had done
-
and I want us to see from this passage day that faith is different for all
-
people and the important part for us to understand is that Jesus is willing to
-
speak Jesus is willing to lay hands and he is willing to let you and I reach out
-
and make the move and touch him in order to see our faith fleshed out and be
-
answered by God faith is not a cookie-cutter thing so if you're if
-
you're listening to this today I think it's really important to understand
-
that you should not try to exactly copy someone else that maybe you look
-
up to or you admire or someone who's been a godly example in your life yes
-
there are ways that we can follow after people and learn from them but we should
-
never try or make the effort to be exactly like them our goal should be to
-
have the faith that God created us to have because what we see in Scripture is
-
that Jesus honored the faith of everyone who was willing to come and
-
bow down before him whether they said speak or whether they said touch or
-
whether they said pray for my children or whether they reached out themselves
-
and touched him Jesus was willing to honor that faith and he's willing to
-
honor our faith today never forget the father who said Jesus I do believe but
-
helped my unbelief because Jesus wants to help us grow let's read verses 35
-
through 43 and finish up this this this healing passage while he was still
-
speaking to her messengers arrived from the home of
-
Jairus the leader of the local synagogue they told him your daughter is dead
-
there's no use in troubling the teacher now but Jesus overheard them and said
-
to Jairus don't be afraid just have faith then Jesus stopped the crowd and
-
wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter James and John the brother of
-
James when they came to the home of the synagogue leader Jesus saw how much
-
commotion and weeping and welling he went inside and asked why all this
-
commotion and weeping the child isn't dead she's only asleep the crowd laughed
-
at him but he made them all leave and he took the girl's father and mother and
-
his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying holding her hand he
-
said to her Alitha comb which means little girl get up and the girl who was
-
12 years old immediately stood up and walked around they were overwhelmed and
-
totally amazed and Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what
-
had happened and then he told them to give her something to eat so we see that
-
Jairus's worst nightmare has happened his daughter is dead but Jesus encourages
-
him to just have faith even when it seems that all hope is gone there is
-
always hope when Jesus is in it through Christ all things are possible and
-
that's something that I think as believers we should all cling to every
-
day of our lives nothing is impossible when it comes to Jesus at this moment
-
Jesus refuses the crowd to go any further and takes along his inner three
-
disciples and when he arrives at the home there's all this weeping and
-
welling and Jesus asked what's what's all this about he makes this statement
-
that she's only sleeping and notice that the crowd laughed at him now this is
-
not the same crowd following him this was the crowd of people had come to mourn
-
this girl's passing Jairus was the only one of these people who went to seek out
-
Jesus and believed in him the rest of the crowd stayed there stayed with the
-
girl and then began to weep and mourn over her as she passed and these
-
people laughed at Jesus but when Jesus raised the little girl up it says that
-
they were overwhelmed and amazed they could not believe their eyes they had to
-
eat their crow and sometimes crow isn't that hard to swallow once again as we
-
see Jesus working and moving in these passages we see this this thing this
-
referred to as the messianic secret this this attitude of Jesus to constantly
-
communicate to people don't tell others what you have seen don't tell others
-
what happened keep this to yourselves when Jesus sent the garrison possessed
-
man a way to tell everyone what he had done he commands the Israelite people
-
to keep it quiet and that's kind of interesting you know it's like when we
-
when we talked about the garrison man who was possessed he told him to go tell
-
others what God had done for him but with a lot of the Israelite people he
-
says now keep this quiet don't tell anyone what happened he made sure the
-
little girl was fed he knows that even if we have been healed spiritually and
-
physically that we still need physical nourishment so Jesus definitely gives
-
attention to our physical needs which I think is an amazing thing that God's
-
very much aware of our physical needs and Jesus makes sure to meet all of our
-
needs both spiritual and physical if we simply trust in him and I think as you
-
look at this story it's really important to see that everyone else may
-
have laughed at Jesus but Jairus believed in him and it doesn't matter
-
if anyone else believes as long as you believe you are the one who has to
-
give an account to the Lord as to whether or not you believe that Jesus
-
could work and move and make a difference in your life it only takes one person's
-
faith to see the dead raised back to life and I think that's really important
-
to remind ourselves of today as we walk with the Lord that if we one person
-
simply believe it only takes one to see the dead brought back to life the
-
question is whether or not we simply believe let's pray together father in
-
heaven thank you so much for this day everything you bless us with thank you
-
for your love and mercy and God I pray that you'd speak into our hearts today
-
helping remind us of your love and faithfulness and how it only takes a
-
little bit of faith Lord from one person to see a miracle done to see
-
the dead brought back to life and Lord I pray today that you would help
-
us to have faith and believe that you will work and move in a mighty way
-
Jesus we love you we thank you and we ask all this in your precious and holy
