Possession: Unexpected Possessions

God, we want to say thank you so much for the opportunity to be in your house and to worship

you. And Lord, we just simply come before you today. We ask that you would work and move in

this place and in a powerful way. Father, we desperately need you. And God, to just ponder

our own one and only Son coming into this world and emptying Himself of all of His Godlike qualities,

all of His rights that He had in heaven, to be born as a human and to suffer and to live like we do.

God is so humbling to think that you would choose us and you would choose that over remaining in the

place that we all desperately want to go to. And Father, this morning I pray that we would

simply open up our hearts, open up our minds that God, we would put our trust and faith in you.

And Lord, we would allow you to reign in our lives. God, you want full control. You want all of us.

And I pray this morning that we would be here, that we would be ready to give you just that.

Father, we pray for our people this morning. I just want to say thank you so much for being

with Jeremy and Hannah and letting baby Lyla come and being healthy. Lord, we just thank you for

that. God, we thank you for being with Jared and Danielle and little Ellery Lynn coming into

the world. Lord, we just thank you for being with them. Lord, we just lift up all of our

peoples. I know we have many needs, but this morning just want to lift up Miss Carolyn Johnson

to you and ask that you would touch her today. She would feel an outpouring of your spirit

and her life in a way that she has not felt in a long time if ever before. She desperately needs

it. And Lord, as we read your word, as we gather here, I pray, Father, that you would

change us. Lord, no matter how close to you we think we are, no matter how much we think we have

everything in line, God, I pray that you would change our hearts and you would speak to us.

Lord, we come humbly to you and we ask that you would be in this place, that you would be in us.

And Lord, this would be about you, not about us, not about what we can gain. But Lord, it would

simply and only be about you. Father, we love you. We thank you. And we ask all this in Jesus

precious and holy name. All God's people said. Amen. You may be seated. Is this working? It is

now? Good. Well, I'm very thankful for the opportunity to be in a place where the Lord

is not just speaking through me and you get to hear somebody else testifying about what

God's doing in your life and not just have to listen to me the whole time. We got some new

people in the room today. So if you're new, you haven't been here. We're talking about this weird

thing about possession. And if this is your first time in church in a while or your first

time here and you're like, Oh man, we picked the doozy of a day to come in on. It's not

that weird. It's a little weird. It's not that weird. Catch the sermon from last week on

Facebook, YouTubers podcast. We talked last week about how God created us to be possessed. He

created us as empty vessels. He created us as the type of vessels that constantly need

to be filled over and over and over again. And because of that, we have to be filled

with an unlimited and infinite resource upon which God is the only unlimited, infinite resource

that exists. And so he created us to be filled with him. And when we are not filled with

God, we will inevitably be empty. So it doesn't matter how much we eat, how much we drink,

how much we party, how much we indulge in promiscuous activities. It does not matter

how much money we make. It does not matter how much we exercise. It does not matter how

much weight we gain. It will never be enough. There's always more. God created us to be

vessels that he alone can fill us and we will only be satisfied when we are filled with

him. So that was the concept of what we need to understand as we talk about possession.

Now the thing about that, which we finished up with last week is, is that if we are not

filled with God, because we are vessels, we will inevitably be filled with something.

And the absence of God is the presence of Satan. Where God does not dwell, Satan does.

This is, we don't like to, we're talking about things that we probably know in our hearts,

but we don't like to say it. Like we don't like to say it out loud and acknowledge some of the

things we're going to talk about today because it hurts and sometimes the truth hurts. And it's

that we know it and we can feel it in our hearts, but we don't, we do not like to just

openly admit it. But where the absence of God is, Satan most certainly dwells. And when

God's presence is absent in our life, you can rest assured that Satan will dwell there.

And one of the things that we've discussed is, you know, when we think about demon possession,

our mind automatically goes to the most crazy parts of the story, like Jay referred to the

man possessed by a legion of demons and he's living in a graveyard and he's howling at

the moon at nighttime and he never sleeps and he cuts himself with rocks and he breaks chains.

And we automatically think about this crazy stuff, but there are most certainly passages

of scripture where people are possessed by evil spirits. They're being oppressed by

Satan in ways that is a little more under the radar. And we talked about this last week.

Satan's MO is flying under the radar. He does not want to make himself known. He does not like to

really reveal himself and all of his trueness because he knows if we got to see God and

then we got to see Satan with our own eyes, which one would we obviously pick? If we got

to see them for who they truly were and what they were capable of and what they had to offer

us, we would obviously choose God. So Satan flies under the radar. And so I think the

passage that we're going to read today is going to hit a little closer to home than what we

would like to admit or realize in our lives. So we're looking at Mark chapter one, verses 21

through 25. And Jesus is confronted by this man, but the scene as he is being confronted by this man

who's possessed by an evil spirit is just absolutely jaw-dropping. And I think this is

important because this could be us this morning. All right, so let's read this together. It says,

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. And when the Sabbath day came,

he went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching for he

talked with real authority, quite unlike the teachers of religious law. Suddenly, a man in

the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, why are you interfering with

us? Now, I want you to pay close attention to the verbiage and the wording of this passage,

because even though this man is possessed by spirit, think about the question he just asked

Jesus, why are you interfering with us as in plural? Jesus of Nazareth, have you come to

destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus reprimanded him, be quiet, come

out of the man he ordered, at that the evil spirit screamed through the man into a convulsion and

then came out of him. So our points this morning are going to be questions. So number one is who?

I think it's really important as we talk about this to understand who it is that we're talking

about. Obviously, the main character of this passage is Jesus, but the other guy that's on

display here is the one who is possessed. And he seems to be just a normal guy. Now,

I want you to think about what this passage is inferring to. Okay, it doesn't really give us a lot

of backdrop detail on what's going on, what's happened beforehand. But you know, when we talk

about the man who was possessed by a legion of demons, it really gives us a lot of information

as to what's been going on in his life and the experience that everyone else has had around him

and how people were afraid of him. And they tried to bind him, but they couldn't because he kept

breaking the chains. But for this man, there's nothing leading up to this telling us about him.

So for all we can understand in this passage, he seems to be just a normal person. He's there.

No one, as far as we can tell, suspects him of being possessed by an evil spirit. No one has

questioned why he's here. No one has brought attention to it. No one brought him and said,

Jesus healed this man. He's possessed by an evil spirit because we saw that multiple times

throughout the gospels of people who recognize possession when they saw they would bring them

to Jesus. This man is just present. And when we talk about this, this morning, I want to

be really careful in this. We're not starting a witch hunt. Okay, so I don't want you to

look around this morning at the people around you in the sanctuary and be like, look at

them over there. They probably possessed by Satan. That's what y'all be talking about

lunch today. I knew it. I knew it. But everything we're talking about, everything that we discuss

when we gather in when we gather in corporate worship and we're talking about God and we're

talking about spirituality. We talk about our relationship with the Lord. I really think

it's important, especially in a context like this, that the way that we speak and the way

that we rationalize things, we're looking internally into our hearts first to make sure that this

isn't us, not that, oh, there's someone else here who's possessed, but in reality, this could

be us. And our desire should be, Lord, I don't want that to be me. I want to be filled with

you. I want to be wholly filled with your spirit. So as we talk about this, we're not

pointing fingers. We're not talking about other people. We're talking. We're looking in the

mirror and we're talking to ourselves and to look at this man who just seems completely normal.

And as far as we can tell, no one else suspected anything. They just thought, oh, he's a normal

dude. He come to the synagogue. He participated in all the stuff that's going on. And in first

John chapter four, verse one, John writes, and he says, dear friends, do not believe

everyone who claims to speak by the spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they

have comes from God. There are many false prophets in the world. You know, when you

look at New Testament scripture, one of the most prolific teachings that you will find

throughout the New Testament is the warning against false prophets, the warning against

people who come in the name of the Lord but are not of the Lord. And so it is very possible

this morning. And I think this hits a little closer to home for us than what we would like

to admit because we know this to be true. There's a lot of people, a lot of people

in the world who claim to know Jesus. They will speak his name. They will say, I believe

in Jesus. I'm saved. I'm going to heaven. They can talk a good game. But you know very

well there are people, even pastors, who have stood up inside a pulpit, talked a really

good game and to be filled with everything else in this world but the spirit of God.

And so when we look at this guy right here, he's attending the worship service. He's there.

He's listening. He listened to the message that Jesus spoke inside the synagogue. And

no one seemed to suspect anything. I imagine Jesus probably knew, but at this moment no

one else really knew what was going on because it was kind of all of a sudden this man started

speaking to Jesus. But John writes to his people as he's communicating them, he's like,

look, you need to beware. Like there are people in this world who are evil. And in the same

way there are us in this world like we are evil. And if we are not filled with the spirit

of God inevitably we will be filled with the spirit of evil, the spirit of Satan

or some type of demonic spirit. And look at what he says, you must test him to see if

the spirit they have comes from God. This is the hard teachings that we do not like

to admit. If God has created us to be filled with something, then the absence of his spirit

means that Satan will be present. If we're sitting here this morning and if we as an

individual is not filled with the very spirit of God, then inevitably we will be filled

with some other type of evil. Whether we want to say that out loud or not, you don't have a choice.

You and I are not as strong as what we would like to think that we are. We cannot fill ourselves

with stuff that is what we claim or like to label as good. The only thing that can fill us

and make us whole and complete us is the presence of God himself and where God does not dwell you

can rest assured that Satan does. And nobody's amen in that because that's hard.

And we know you can fill it in every aspect of who you are that that is true. Because you know

whenever you're not letting God reign in your life something else is raining and it's not good

and we don't like to talk about it. Because I've been there and I'd like to talk about it when

I'm there. So there's this warning and there's this understanding that there are people who come

who are filled with a spirit. They may do powerful things. You know the demon-possessed man in the

graveyard used to snap chains with supernatural power just because people can do things and they

may have talents and abilities and all these gifts or whatever does not necessarily mean that

they're filled with the spirit of God. They're filled with the spirit but it's something other

than God. So you have to test them. When you come here on Sunday morning I hope and pray that you

test every word that I say. You should. That's what Scripture commands you to do to test what

is being said to see if it comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

This is one of the most common teachings of the New Testament for believers is to be aware

that Satan is in the midst working and moving and you can bet your money on that. That's something

that you can constantly bet on to know that even if you are serving God and you're leaving for him

and you're filled with his spirit Satan is working and moving around you and if he's not working and

moving in you chances are there's someone around you that he's working and moving in and that makes

life difficult in itself. Point two. What, when and where. So we talk about this man who just seems to

be normal from what we can tell. He just kind of flew under the radar so far until Jesus comes.

But think about what's happening. What? This guy is in a place of worship. On the Sabbath,

that's the wind. On a holy day and where in a synagogue that's dedicated to the worship of God.

And we love to think that if we go into a place like a church or we go to a holy place or something

like that that there's some kind of like protection over us and stuff. But I want you

to understand this morning these people were at a place dedicated to the worship of God on a day

that was dedicated to the worship of God. Literally worshiping God and Satan was there. Evil was present

among them. And we need to remind ourselves this morning that as you walk through the doors of

this church the holiness of this place is only determined by the holiness of the people who

walk through it. There's nothing special about this building. It's a beautiful church. We prayed

over it. The people who were responsible for building it dedicated it to the Lord. Sacrifice

so that it could be here. But you rest assured that if we're not careful and we're not filled

with the Holy Spirit, Satan would love to come in here and set up shop and he would take it

over very quickly. It's just a place. And we see that in this moment. Nothing significant has

happened because he's just been there the whole time. Let's have some honest conversations.

Y'all ready for this? We just said it, number one. We like to think they're special things.

Doesn't matter. Satan can dwell in here just like he could anywhere else down the road.

The Spirit of God dwells in his people, not necessarily in a place. The Spirit of God

dwelling in a place is Old Testament covenant. The Spirit of God dwelling in you, that's the

New Testament covenant that we live in. The Old Testament covenant is old. Not bad, but Jesus

came to fulfill it and complete it so that God's Spirit could live in you. There's nothing special

about the place. It's about this. The second thing is when you look at this and you think

about this, when unsaved people walk inside the doors of this place, they're bringing evil

in with them. They're bringing sin, they're bringing possession, oppression, they're dragging

it in. So think about this this morning. How many of you have ever invited someone

to come to church because you're like, I love that person. I want that person to get saved. I

want to bring them to church, right? Yeah, most of us have done that. And every time that we've

brought someone to church, how many times have we ever truly been aware that whenever that

person who does not claim to know Jesus Christ, does not profess faith, has not surrendered their

life to them, is literally dragging everything that's in their life that is evil and wretched

and messed up, that God has not dealt with yet. They're bringing it into the place that we like

to consider holy in a time where we're doing holy things and they're bringing spiritual warfare

into the presence that we're in right now. To come in here this morning and know that

we came to worship God and yet there may be people in here who are literally bringing in

evil spirits and is present in this place right now. And you probably don't even realize it

because I don't realize it. Because as a pastor, I love you. But if there's something going on in

your life, God has not given me the ability to see through you. That's not one of my gifts.

And so you could be here this morning completely filled with evil and bringing

spiritual warfare into place and we have no idea. So if you ever invite someone to church,

how many times have you ever prayed, God prevent evil from entering into this place

so that there will be room for your Holy Spirit to move and work in their life and to possess them

rather than the evil to possess them. That should be one of our prayers. Because those people walk

through the doors and they're not intentionally bringing in evil. They may not intentionally be

trying to disrupt the serp. They're just coming because you invited them and they're as

uncomfortable as most of us are walking into this place. But this other thing is, is the

worst thing is people who do profess Jesus, who do say, I love Jesus and I'm saved and

I believe in eternal life and I'm going to church to worship. And they know that they have sin in

their life. They know that they have not fully surrendered to God. They know that there is evil

in their hearts and lives that they have not dealt with. They have not surrendered.

And yet they walk into the church anyway, and they will even say something on the lines of God.

I know that I need to deal with this, but I'm not going to deal with it today.

I know I need to go to the altar, but it's not going to be today. I'm going to come. I'm going

to do church because I know I need to be there. I know I need to surrender to you,

but I'm resisting and I'm not going to do it today. I'll deal with it eventually.

And that's intentionally bringing in the spirit of Satan into the house of God for worship.

And that happens a lot more than we'd like to admit because I've done it before.

I know it can happen because I've done it.

And as we pray before we come to church, I don't know if you guys do this,

but before you come to church to like to begin praying and preparing your hearts and preparing

to be there and preparing to hear the message of God and preparing for God's spirit to move

and work in your life that you would say, God, protect this place, protect our hearts.

Do not let Satan enter in so that you can have free reign because where the spirit of God is absent,

that is where Satan dwells. And let me share something with you this morning.

You look at this passage and one of the most powerful things that you see

is that when Jesus speaks, the people were amazed because he spoke with authority

and the teachers of religious law didn't. They didn't speak with authority.

And so this whole time in a house of God, on a day of God doing things for God,

God's spirit has never been present in this place. And finally, when God shows up

and Jesus has spoken and Jesus has communicated to these people,

this man looks at him and the spirit within him says, what are you doing here?

Why are you interfering with us? This is our place. We've had shops set up here

for Lord knows how long. You haven't messed with us. You've given us this place. Why are you here?

The second Thessalonians chapter three, verses two through three

says, pray to that we will be rescued from wicked and evil people for not everyone is a believer,

but the Lord is faithful. He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. There is a need

in our lives to understand that there is a spiritual battle going on that you and I cannot see.

There are wars and battles being waged for your soul and the souls of everyone you love

and the souls of everyone that you come in contact with for everyone in this room.

Satan is fighting. You should be praying for yourself. You should be praying for the people

you love. You should be praying for your church family that God will strengthen you because there

are evil people there. Chances are there are people here present among us, people who may even be

members of our church who is not letting God reign in their life. And because of that,

Satan is reigning whether they like to admit it or not.

That's because the only thing that exists to combat Satan is God's presence.

The only thing to exist to combat Satan is God's presence. So point number three, why?

Why was this possessed man in a holy place on a holy day at a holy time? It was simply because

God had not been there. It is very possible for people to meet in the name of Jesus,

to pray in the name of Jesus, to sing in the name of Jesus, to get ready and look pretty on a Sunday

morning and go out to eat lunch and Sunday afternoon in the name of Jesus and Jesus never

be there. We can put on a terrific dog and pony show. We can make it look great.

And not just people who attend church, but even people who do church, worship team,

pastors, everybody, it's possible. But the reason why Satan was present is because God was not.

And the only reason they ever found out this guy was possessed by a demon was because God showed up.

God's presence is the only thing that can combat Satan. When you look back at verse 22,

it says, the people were amazed at his teaching for he taught with real authority,

quite unlike the teachers of religious law, the men who had been charged to keep the law of God

and to teach the people about God did not have God in them. God's presence was absent

from everything that they were doing. And even though it was a holy place on a holy day,

and they were doing holy things, there was nothing holy about it until God's presence showed up.

And I say that because for you as an individual and for me as an individual,

it's so important to realize we can do the dog and pony show all day long, every single day

for our entire lives. And until God's presence actually comes into our lives, it's all for nothing.

Because Satan is quite okay with the show, but he's not okay when God shows up.

Look at the questions he asked him. The man asked Jesus,

why are you interfering with us? This is our place. This is our time.

We have had control and dominion that was unchallenged over this place for the entire

time until you finally show up and they wanted to know why Jesus was there.

But let me take you to another spot where Jesus was also at a synagogue.

And in Luke 4 verses 18 through 19, Jesus goes to Nazareth, which is his own hometown.

Luke 4:18–19

And he goes to the local synagogue and he begins to teach and he grabs the scroll from Isaiah

and he begins to read this in verses 18 through 19. He says, the spirit of the Lord is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will

be released, that the blind will see that the oppressed will be set free and that the time of

the Lord's favor has come. Why are you interfering with us? Because the purpose of God's presence

for Jesus to come and for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell in us was to set the captives free,

to make the blind able to see, to bring darkness to light, to bring evil and expose it and to take

evil and destroy it so that you and I could be free. One of the things that we talked about last

week is that Satan operates in a way that controls us. We feel helpless. We feel like we can't quit.

We can't say no. We can't get out of this. God brings freedom. How many of you, you want to

be honest this morning? How many of you almost didn't make it today? Like it was hard to get

here. How many of you, it's like almost hard to get here every single Sunday. There is something

about God. Now you think about this and you take this home and you put it in the bank and you

tuck it away and you keep it for the rest of your life. Everything about God gives you an option.

It is very easy to say no to the Lord. There is nothing addictive about serving God. It's a choice

that you have to make every day. It's almost like on Sunday morning when you know you're

supposed to be at church, everything in the world happens and you just cannot. It's like,

God, how am I going to get there? Because it's a choice. And then you look at everything that

Satan gives you and everything that the world has to offer and it's addictive.

And you don't feel like you can say no. And you don't feel like you can change. You don't

feel like you can get out of it. You don't feel like you just feel like there's no hope.

And at the same time for the God who it's so easy to say no to, there's joy and there's

happiness and we know when we're living for him, everything's right. And it's the way that it

should be. And that brings joy in our lives. And yet at the same time, it's so easy to just be like,

nah, I'll put that off and I'll take a break today.

We'll just do that tomorrow. And next thing you know, it's the next time. And this the next time

is so easy to say no to God. God gives you a choice. Satan binds you. Jesus came to set

the captives free. Satan comes into setup shop to bind you and to hold you captive.

The second question he asked, have you come to destroy us? The presence of God is the power

upon which all evil will be destroyed and overcome. This evil spirit looks at Jesus in the eye

and he says, have you come to destroy us? Yes, we've had free reign. We've been unchecked.

We've operated without any issues or anything like that. But now that we see that your presence is

here, it's our time of destruction at hand. The only thing that can combat evil and addiction

and sin and possession and oppression is the very presence of God. It is the power upon

which evil will be destroyed and the chains will be broken. God's presence is the very

evidence of evil being destroyed and overcome.

That is the power upon which you and I should be living and craving and seeking to be filled with.

First John chapter three, verses seven and eight. John writes and says, dear children,

don't let anyone deceive you about this. When people do what is right, it shows that they

are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. But when people keep on sinning, it shows that

they belong to the devil who has been sinning since the beginning. But the son of God came

to destroy the works of the devil. Why is Jesus there? He came to set the captives free and to

destroy the works of the devil. And another hard teaching that we hate to admit is that if we keep

on sinning, it shows who we truly belong to. And that's hard to swallow.

Because if we belong to Christ, in the spirit of God is within us, we will be righteous even as

Christ was righteous. But if we keep on sinning, it shows who we truly belong to.

Now, I want to clarify a couple of things in that this morning, as we're sitting here before

you leave. I don't want you to go away from this place being, well, I guess I just belong

to Satan because I'm just struggling with the sin and I can't move past it. And it's captivated

me and I'm dealing with it and I know it's wrong, but so I guess I just belong to the devil.

Do not give up. Do not give in to the idea that Satan wants to make you feel like you are

conquered and that there is no hope for you. There is hope through the power and the presence

of God in your life. And so if there is sin in your life that you have been struggling with,

all it means is, is that there is an area of your life that needs to be surrendered to the Lord

where God's presence moves in and forces that evil in your life out.

So I challenge you this morning, surrender to the Lord.

Don't give up and say, well, I guess I just belong to Satan because that's what Pastor

James says. Like, no, that's not what I'm saying. You were never meant to belong to Satan.

When God's presence shows up, it destroys evil. It removes it. It breaks the chains of oppression.

So if you feel stuck in it this morning, it simply just reveals that there's a lack

of the presence of God in your life because the presence of God helps us to overcome all things.

All right, James, you're getting a little carried away. This is a little intense,

a little more than what I, you know, I don't know, I feel like you're just grasping at straws.

I think it's a little more of a witch hunt than you're like to, like to let on to.

But for me personally, anytime there's ever been sin in my life,

I know that there is a great heap of guilt and shame and I can't sleep.

And so I just ask you this morning, how's your sleep?

How's your joy? How's your peace?

If you think I'm on a witch hunt and you think I'm saying crazy things,

why is it that if you think that you're so good, you feel so bad?

You're a good person, but you feel pretty lousy.

That's the presence of the enemy. That's the message of the enemy.

Guilt and shame and captivity, bondage, oppression.

God's presence wants to free you from those things.

God's presence wants to give you victory. The spirit of God, the fruits of the spirit,

are peace and joy, which we lack so many times in our lives.

In 1 John 4, verses 17 through 18, John said,

1 John 4:17–18

and as we live in God, our love grows more perfect, so we will not be afraid on the day of judgment.

If you're so good and what I'm saying is so wrong,

do you actually look forward to standing before God in heaven or are you afraid?

Because he says, so we will not be afraid on the day of judgment,

but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.

How do you live like Jesus? How do you be righteous like Christ was righteous?

Through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has to possess you.

The Holy Spirit has to possess me.

And in verse 18, it says, such love as no fear.

If there's fear in our lives, it's because Satan is communicating that fear.

But God expels fear.

God wants us to stand before him confidently because perfect love expels all fear.

If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment.

And this shows that we are not fully experienced his perfect love.

God wants us to be filled with his spirit.

And because of that, we can have all these good things that we desire

and we can look forward to judgment day with confidence,

not because of what we've done, but because we realize, man, I can't do this.

I need God's spirit to come inside of me and empower me to do everything he's asking me to do

because I'm really stinking this up.

And I know that because I've stunk it up before.

And it's only through God and his presence that we have freedom from evil reigning in our lives.

Jesus has come to set us free.

His spirit exists to set us free.

So the question is, who are we going to be possessed by?

Let's pray.

Father God, thank you for the opportunity to be in your house and to worship you.

And Lord, as we said earlier, it's not about just being in a place.

God, it's about your Holy Spirit being present in our hearts and among us.

As Lord, I pray this morning that we would just be ever aware

that we are spiritual beings living in a physical world.

And although this physical world is what we can see and smell and touch,

and we rely on that so much that, Lord,

there is a battle going on that we cannot see unless you open up our eyes

and you reveal to us the things that are going on around us.

I pray, Father, that you would open our eyes this morning.

I pray that you would come in and that you would reveal the things in our lives

that is possessing us and luring us away from you.

And God, that you would remove those things

and fill us with your Holy Spirit so that we can live as Jesus lives.

Because it is only possible through your Holy Spirit.

Lord, we love you today and we thank you for this opportunity.
