  1. Glory to His name Glory to His name

  2. There to my heart was the light of fire Glory to His name

  3. Glory to His name Glory to His name

  4. There to my heart was the light of fire Glory to His name

  5. Well Father God thank you so much for the opportunity to come once again into worship

  6. and have this time of meeting together with other believers and most importantly meeting with you

  7. Lord if there is anything within us this morning that is unsure, uncomfortable, guilty

  8. God I pray that you would just bind all of that in these moments

  9. Father we are very privileged to be here and to do what we are doing right now

  10. I know there is probably a few people who would rather be at home in a warm bed watching a show on TV

  11. doing some kind of hobby, just something that just naturally appeals to us more than maybe this moment

  12. but Father it's in these times that your truth shines through a little brighter than we normally see or experience

  13. and there is a decision in our hearts that we have to make as to whether or not we are going to close our eyes

  14. and cover our ears and refuse to hear and see

  15. or if we are going to open ourselves up to what it is that you want to say

  16. So Father this morning I pray that your Holy Spirit would have free reign in this place

  17. and I pray that everyone in this room would be willing to say in this moment God, may your Holy Spirit have free reign in me

  18. because if we are honest we know that we can really make a mess of things pretty quickly in our own lives

  19. we make lots of mistakes, we do lots of things we shouldn't do

  20. but Lord we believe that you are a perfect, all knowing God

  21. and that you can show us things that we have never seen before or never thought that we could see

  22. Lord you can take things from us that we feel like we can't get rid of ourselves

  23. because only you can make the blind see and only you can set the captives free

  24. So Father this morning as we worship together we pray that you would work and move in a mighty way

  25. help us to be humble and submissive

  26. we pray for our brothers and sisters who are not here today and we just ask that you would touch them

  27. touch their bodies as many are dealing with physical issues

  28. touch their hearts and minds as many are dealing with spiritual issues

  29. Lord we give you this time

  30. God we pray for a lot of our young men who are going to a conference this morning

  31. we pray for our sister churches who are meeting right now at this same moment

  32. and we pray

  33. that in all places where people are gathering in the name of Jesus

  34. that your Holy Spirit would be there and that you would reign

  35. Father we give this time to you

  36. we give our hearts to you

  37. and we ask that you would help us to be pleasing and honoring to you in all of it

  38. we love you and we thank you

  39. and we ask all this in Jesus precious and holy name

  40. all God's people said

  41. Amen

  42. Before we get started with the sermon I do want to encourage you guys

  43. I have not said a lot about this

  44. I've kind of let Timmy do the announcements

  45. but for our family discipleship night next Sunday night

  46. if you have not signed up for that if you have not considered signing up for that

  47. I really encourage you to consider that

  48. one of the things that Timmy and I have talked about over the past few years is

  49. and one of the things we talk about as a staff regularly is

  50. you know our church is not going to be much of anything

  51. unless your relationship with God is flourishing at home in your own lives

  52. Graham Chapel is a reflection of the personal worship of the people who are here

  53. so insane that you know the idea of

  54. when when Timmy because this is this is pastor Timmy

  55. this is something God's laid on his heart and we've talked about it for a while now

  56. but when he said this I'm like man

  57. I know what that would have been like several years back for me to sign up and do that

  58. that would have been really awkward

  59. you'd had a hard time getting me to sign up for that

  60. the idea of praying in front of other people in general is is terrifying

  61. it's still terrifying to me

  62. but also like doing that with your family is is awkward

  63. and I can say as we have tried to incorporate in our family as much as we possibly can

  64. that's not an easy thing to do

  65. it's not like these great spiritual moments

  66. it's it's most mostly war

  67. you know trying to get three kids that like together and praying

  68. and spending that time together as a family

  69. and doing that regularly is tough

  70. so I encourage you whether you have a family

  71. whether you're starting a family whether you are single

  72. and you're just thinking about this and it's like man

  73. I'd love to be married one day love to have kids one day

  74. sign up for this come to this

  75. it will change your life

  76. think about what it is that you say you believe in

  77. we say all the time prayer changes things

  78. it changes everything

  79. and if we believe that then it can change your marriage

  80. it can change your relationship with your kids

  81. it can change your relationship with your parents

  82. so if you are a kid

  83. sign your parents up for this

  84. Merry Christmas

  85. incoming

  86. it changes things

  87. we we have to really put feet to words whenever we say we believe in something

  88. so I encourage you guys to do this

  89. come come hang out with us next Sunday night

  90. one Sunday night a month right now is kind of what we're shooting for

  91. so not trying to take a whole lot of your time

  92. but think it's very beneficial

  93. think it will be a great thing for our church as a whole

  94. not just now but especially in the days to come for your family as it grows

  95. so we're talking about possession

  96. we're talking about this idea that God has created you and I

  97. to be possessed by Him

  98. that He is He's created you in a way to be this vessel

  99. that needs to be filled infinitely with Himself

  100. because He is the only infinite thing that exists

  101. He's the only thing that can fill us

  102. this week as I do a lot of reading and praying

  103. and just watching different videos

  104. and just kind of preparing for Sunday

  105. just happened to stumble upon this quote

  106. I think it's great

  107. some of you may be familiar with the French mathematician Blaise Pascal

  108. it's probably according to how far you made it in high school math

  109. as to whether or not you heard his name

  110. but Pascal is pretty famous

  111. he's one of the most famous mathematicians that has ever lived

  112. there's a lot of his theories and a lot of his findings and discoveries in mathematics

  113. that are taught in school today

  114. I remember his name and hearing a lot of his theories

  115. as I was going through math in high school

  116. in the 1600s

  117. I mean this guy lived in the 1600s

  118. okay long time ago

  119. and so he was a mathematician that's what he did before

  120. he got saved

  121. he began to believe in Jesus Christ gave his heart to him

  122. and he kind of waned a little bit away from mathematics

  123. and began focusing on his relationship with the Lord

  124. he writes this piece of literature

  125. he's actually one of the first

  126. what we would consider a

  127. oh what's the term where you defend your faith

  128. apologists yeah he's one of our first

  129. thank you thank you there you go

  130. he's one of our first apologists that we really know about

  131. who like devoted significant time and efforts into publishing this stuff

  132. I'm going to read this quote to you from from this thing that he wrote

  133. it says

  134. what else does this craving

  135. and this helplessness proclaim

  136. but that there was once in man a true happiness

  137. of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace

  138. this he tries in vain to fill with everything around him

  139. seeking in things that are not there

  140. the help he cannot find and those that are

  141. though none can help

  142. since this infinite abyss can be filled only

  143. with an infinite and immutable object

  144. in other words by God himself

  145. four hundred and something years ago

  146. here's this very famous guy that we know from mathematics

  147. who is talking about his faith where he understands

  148. there is this hole within us that can only be filled by God

  149. you will hear a lot of people kind of translate this quote today

  150. in today's terms of there's a God shaped hole

  151. that can only be filled by God himself

  152. in every single one of our lives

  153. and that's kind of what we've been talking about

  154. so in the midst of God creating us to be possessed by himself

  155. possessed by his spirit he wants to fill us

  156. he wants to free us he wants to empower us

  157. and yet at the same time

  158. there's a decision that has to be made by every single one of us

  159. as to whether or not we are going to allow God to possess us

  160. because God is not going to come in unless we invite him in

  161. and give him that free reign

  162. and that authority in our lives to do what only he can do

  163. and one of the things we talked about last week

  164. is that when we reject God in those moments

  165. the scary part of this thing is that when we reject God

  166. the absence of God is inevitably the presence of evil

  167. the absence of God is the presence of Satan in our lives

  168. I forget what chapter, forget what verse

  169. in the Gospel of John there's a passage of scripture that says

  170. the sin of man is that he refuses to acknowledge

  171. and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Messiah

  172. you think about that today

  173. you can do anything in this world that is sinful

  174. and you can be forgiven for it

  175. there is no sin that you have or ever will commit

  176. that will keep you out of heaven

  177. but your refusal to allow Jesus Christ to come into your heart and life

  178. that decision will be the determining factor of whether or not you inherit eternal life

  179. or eternal punishment

  180. that's the life that we live in

  181. that's the decision that we make

  182. now we may not sit here today and say

  183. oh I want to worship Satan or I want to serve him

  184. or I want to let Satan feel me

  185. but inevitably when we reject God

  186. we are opening up that abyss

  187. that hole that is infinite to be filled with the things of Satan

  188. and we may try to fill it with what we think is good

  189. what we think is worthy, what we think is interesting or whatever

  190. but the absence of God is the presence of Satan

  191. we have to acknowledge that, that's where we are

  192. last week we read Mark 1 about this man who was possessed by an evil spirit

  193. and he went unnoticed

  194. he was at the synagogue at a holy place

  195. he was on the Sabbath day which was a holy day

  196. and he was participating in the worship at the synagogue doing holy things

  197. and he was possessed by evil

  198. so it's very possible that we are sitting here this morning

  199. and one of us or multiple of us may be filled with evil in our life

  200. we're being possessed or oppressed however you want to refer to that

  201. by Satan in areas of our life

  202. because as this man encounters Jesus

  203. the presence of God for the first time

  204. he then reveals himself and says why are you interfering with me

  205. why are you interfering

  206. so let's look at Mark chapter 5 verses 1 through 13

    Mark 5:1–13

  207. over the past two weeks we have referenced this passage

  208. and this example several times

  209. and I felt like it was appropriate as we've talked about it a lot

  210. because this is one of the most extreme examples

  211. of demonic possession that we see in the New Testament

  212. so we saw this very flying under the radar man

  213. who was possessed by Satan

  214. he was in the synagogue

  215. he was participating

  216. not necessarily participating but he was at least present

  217. in the moment where they were worshipping

  218. scripture was being read

  219. didn't bother him didn't seem to bother anyone else

  220. then you have this man that we're reading about today

  221. who is full-fledged possessed

  222. beyond anything that most of us could ever possibly imagine or comprehend

  223. Mark 5 verses 1 through 13 read this with me

    Mark 5:1–13

  224. so they arrived at the other side of the lake

  225. in the region of the Gerasenes

  226. and when Jesus climbed out of the boat

  227. a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him

  228. this man lived in the burial caves

  229. and could no longer be restrained even with a chain

  230. whenever he was put into chains and shackles as he often was

  231. he snapped the chains from his wrist and smashed the shackles

  232. no one was strong enough to subdue him

  233. day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills

  234. howling and cutting himself with sharp stones

  235. when Jesus was still some distance away

  236. the man saw him ran to meet him and bowed low before him

  237. with a shriek he screamed

  238. why are you interfering with me

  239. Jesus son of the Most High God

  240. sound familiar

  241. there's one flying under the radar

  242. here's one who's noticeably

  243. this guy's got something weird going on

  244. and the response is exactly the same

  245. why are you interfering with me

  246. and even addresses him as the son of the Most High God

  247. in the name of God

  248. think about this

  249. the demon is invoking the name of God upon his request

  250. that's pretty easy to do right

  251. how many times have we asked for stuff in the name of Jesus or in the name of God

  252. so he's invoking the name of God

  253. in the name of God I beg you don't torture me

  254. for Jesus had already said to the spirit come out of the man you evil spirit

  255. then Jesus demanded what is your name

  256. and he replied my name is Legion because there are many of us inside this man

  257. then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place

  258. so I want you to think about that

  259. when we talk about Satan flying under the radar

  260. the man last week was best possessed by an evil spirit says why are you interfering with us

  261. this man says why are you interfering with me

  262. and then Jesus asked him well what's your name and he says well

  263. my name is Legion because there's actually many of us in here

  264. so you think it's just all this there's just this one demon but

  265. and I want you to consider this this morning

  266. because this is this should be one of the most eye-opening things

  267. when we talk about this eternal hole within your body

  268. that there is just not enough room in there for you to be possessed by one evil thing

  269. but an infinite amount of evil things

  270. that this man is not just possessed by one spirit

  271. but by like probably at least two thousand spirits that we know of

  272. as the name Legion means many or thousands inside the Roman Empire

  273. and then we see two thousand pigs that we'll read about next week

  274. about how like he sends the pig in at least or sends them in at least two thousand pigs

  275. as they run off the cliff

  276. so so this hole that's within you is not only just capable of being filled with one demonic presence

  277. which would be bad enough but it has the ability to be filled with an infinite number of demonic presence

  278. so the level of evil that you and I are capable of is kind of infinite

  279. as the ability for God to fill you

  280. is only capable from him through his infinite existence

  281. that's a pretty scary thing

  282. so this man is filled with a legion with many demons

  283. and they begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place

  284. there happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby

  285. send us into those pigs the spirit begged

  286. let us enter them

  287. so Jesus gave them permission the evil spirits came out of the man to enter the pigs

  288. and the entire herd of about two thousand pigs plunged down the hill

  289. down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water

  290. point number one

  291. all of our points this morning are dealing with Satan's goals as he wants to possess us

  292. you don't get to see kind of what he's trying to do or accomplish in most cases

  293. but this man is so far gone so far possessed

  294. and ingrained in being filled with evil

  295. that you kind of finally get to see some of Satan's goals for us as people

  296. as he fills this man

  297. so point number one is confusion and disorientation

  298. I don't know about you guys

  299. but when you talk about a man who's living among dead people

  300. that's pretty confusing right

  301. here's a live person who wants to live among dead people

  302. he's howling like an animal even though he's human

  303. and he's going around and he's cutting himself with sharp rocks

  304. he's literally harming his own body

  305. now this is really difficult for us to comprehend and understand

  306. because we don't see a lot of things like this

  307. but there are things about this that we have seen in other people as time goes on

  308. for instance

  309. when I was in youth ministry especially back when I was in Eden several years ago

  310. one of the big things that teenagers were struggling with back in that time

  311. was cutting themselves

  312. we had several youth who cut themselves regularly

  313. it was something they dealt with regularly

  314. and they couldn't explain why

  315. they knew what was wrong, wanted to stop it

  316. those things that they were dealing with in their life

  317. and they talked about the pain from that

  318. took their mind off of the pain from what they were dealing with

  319. I mean just crazy so we see stuff like this

  320. so this shouldn't be that far-fetched but it is

  321. so let's talk a little bit about it

  322. God created us to be possessed

  323. so that he could fill us with himself

  324. so that he could help you see

  325. he could help you hear

  326. he could give you freedom

  327. he could give you the fruits of the spirit

  328. peace, joy, love, patience

  329. all the good things that we talk about

  330. that we say that we believe in

  331. so God wants to possess us to give us those things

  332. Satan wants to possess us so that he can control us

  333. and take from us

  334. God sets us free

  335. he gives us life

  336. not only does he give us physical life

  337. but he gives us eternal life

  338. and even in this moment

  339. Satan is possessing this man and causing him to physically harm himself

  340. now when we talk about confusion and disorientation

  341. think about this for a second

  342. there are a lot of people out there who do not believe in God

  343. they will not acknowledge it

  344. they're just not going to

  345. and so there's a lot of people not inside this room necessarily

  346. but out there this morning

  347. who have no mindset of God

  348. who would look at a story like this and be like

  349. I don't want to live in a cave of dead people

  350. but I would really like to have supernatural strength

  351. that would be appealing to some people, right?

  352. a lot of people took steroids

  353. to get stronger

  354. there's a lot of things that people have done

  355. to have or receive things

  356. that they know is bad for them

  357. and we will make choices in order to gain things

  358. and so this idea of what this man has

  359. could be seen to some people as

  360. I kind of like the idea of that

  361. I kind of like the idea of being free

  362. and not having to do stuff

  363. I'm going to pick on my dad a little bit this morning

  364. my dad lived a pretty wild life back in the day

  365. and I can remember growing up

  366. my friends thought my dad was like the coolest person around

  367. and that was really aggravating

  368. but they always really cool

  369. rode a motorcycle, had long hair

  370. earring when earrings were not acceptable

  371. he just lived out there, did what he wanted

  372. and in a lot of ways that was kind of cool

  373. people looked at that and was like

  374. he does what he wants, he says what he wants

  375. all this stuff, that's really cool

  376. and in the view of things from the outside

  377. that's freedom right there

  378. I want to do what I want to do

  379. I want to be who I want to be

  380. I don't want anybody to control me

  381. and all that stuff

  382. and it's the things that you don't see

  383. that really reveals what's truly there

  384. and so for instance that lifestyle that my dad lived

  385. for a really long time

  386. it came with a cost

  387. it came with a high price

  388. from the outside it looks like a lot of freedom

  389. but man he was paying for it

  390. and his friends were paying for it too

  391. you know every single one of my dad's friends

  392. that he hung out with and he partied with

  393. and he rode motorcycles with and he did all that stuff with

  394. back in the day they're all dead now

  395. he's 65

  396. all his friends that he did all that stuff with

  397. they're dead and gone

  398. does that sound like life?

  399. and a lot of them have been dead for a long time

  400. it's not like it just recently happened

  401. like that's been happening for a while now

  402. Satan comes to confuse and disorientate us

  403. he wants people to think that what he has to offer is good

  404. and that's freedom and that's the choice that you get to have

  405. and it's way better than what God offers

  406. and he tries to make us think that what God is offering us is really bondage

  407. he wants us to lose track of what it is that God really created us for

  408. and if you look back at Genesis 3

    Genesis 3:1–5

  409. verses 1 through 5

  410. and you look at the very first moment that Satan steps into this world

  411. and he calls to mankind and he says

  412. let me whisper something in your ear

  413. let me tell you what God really thinks

  414. and in verses 1 through 5 of chapter 3 he says

  415. the serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals

  416. and the Lord God had made

  417. and one day he asked the woman

  418. did God really say

  419. you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden

  420. and automatically his question is confusing

  421. it's taking her attention from one thing

  422. and it's moving it to something else

  423. of course we may eat from the fruit of the trees in the garden

  424. the woman replied it's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden

  425. that we're not allowed to eat

  426. God said, she knew what God said

  427. you must not eat it or even touch it if you do you will die

  428. they knew what God said but they didn't understand why God said it

  429. they did not understand what it was about this tree

  430. that was so wrong for them to partake in

  431. and I'm telling you this because I know as a human being

  432. there are a lot of things in scripture

  433. there are a lot of things that you've heard your parents

  434. your grandparents, pastors

  435. other people tell you this morning

  436. and the younger you are the more difficult

  437. you know this but even if you're older

  438. you will remember feeling this way

  439. you remember hearing these things

  440. and you remember what it's like

  441. I don't understand why it's so bad

  442. I don't understand why my mom and dad won't let me do this

  443. I don't understand why we can't do this

  444. I don't understand why scripture says to do this

  445. I don't understand why God wants us to do this

  446. there's all these things that God commands us and calls us not to do

  447. and we don't understand why

  448. and because we don't understand

  449. Satan begins to whisper in our ear

  450. he's saying it's really not a big deal

  451. your parents are just trying to keep you from having fun

  452. they're just trying to make you miserable

  453. they don't know what it's like

  454. to be a teenager because it was that long ago

  455. let me tell you something

  456. it don't matter if it's 2025

  457. or if it's 1625

  458. Blaise Pascal who lived 400 years ago

  459. knows what it's like to go through puberty

  460. to become an adult

  461. and to face this conundrum in your life

  462. where you have to decide one day

  463. am I going to serve God

  464. or am I going to reject him

  465. everything that you struggle with in your life

  466. even though it's unique to you personally

  467. within reason it's very similar to everything that everyone else is going to

  468. guys, Satan wants to confuse us

  469. in verse 4 he says

  470. you won't die the serpent replied to the woman

  471. God knows that your eyes will be open as soon as you eat it

  472. and you will be like God knowing both good and evil

  473. confusion and disorientation

  474. and let me tell you why he wants to confuse you and disorientate you

  475. because if he can confuse you and disorientate you enough

  476. and he causes you to sin

  477. guess what happens

  478. he removes you from the presence of God

  479. what happens when the presence of God is removed

  480. evil quickly fills that void

  481. when you look at Genesis 3

  482. Adam and Eve the punishment for that sin

  483. yes they would die

  484. but the true punishment of that sin was being removed from the garden

  485. and being removed from the presence of God

  486. which they had access to every single day

  487. God would come and walk with him in the cool of the evening

  488. they could see God face to face

  489. they could communicate with him

  490. ask him questions

  491. all they had to do was just wait a little bit and ask God

  492. God why?

  493. why is this so bad?

  494. but they got impatient, confused, disorientated

  495. and Satan's attempt to do this was successful

  496. and inevitably he removed them from the presence of God

  497. and it was just a snowball from that point on

  498. that's Genesis 3 and Genesis 4

  499. we have the first murder as their kids

  500. Cain kills Abel

  501. that's how fast it goes

  502. and it didn't happen right away

  503. it didn't happen overnight

  504. but it came

  505. the day came

  506. point number two

  507. Satan's goal was dominion

  508. you know Satan's original sin

  509. was to try to establish himself as God

  510. so that he could have dominion over God and over heaven

  511. he wanted to be God, he wanted to be worshiped

  512. his main goals

  513. in possessing you and I

  514. is to have dominion over us

  515. now I want you to think about this

  516. here's the difference between God and Satan

  517. Jesus Christ came

  518. and in Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  519. it says that he emptied himself

  520. of his divine privileges

  521. and his God like qualities

  522. he emptied himself of his deity

  523. to come in human flesh

  524. to be the sacrifice for our sins

  525. and give himself

  526. so that you and I can have life

  527. everlasting

  528. Satan does not empty himself of anything

  529. but comes in to claim

  530. and to take and to keep us in bondage

  531. Jesus emptied himself out so that we could have freedom

  532. Satan comes in to possess, to keep us in bondage

  533. and let's look at this

  534. let's look at 2 Corinthians chapter 4 verse 4

    2 Corinthians 4:4

  535. we're just going to read the first part of that

  536. as Paul writes

  537. and listen to what he's talking about

  538. the title of the heading is

  539. blindness of people who are perishing

  540. he's talking about how people of the world

  541. who are perishing, who are apart from God

  542. they're blind and they're perishing

  543. look at what he's talking about

  544. Satan who is the God of this world

  545. has blinded the minds of those who don't believe

  546. so Satan has come into this world

  547. he's established dominion over the world

  548. because he's called all of us into sin

  549. we've all sinned, we've all fallen short of the glory of God

  550. he's the God of this world

  551. and he is blinding everyone who does not believe in Jesus

  552. if you don't believe in Jesus Christ

  553. you don't have a relationship with him

  554. you don't see

  555. somebody said it several years ago

  556. there's no better way to say it

  557. I can't explain to you what it's like to be saved

  558. to have a relationship with Jesus Christ

  559. I can tell you about it

  560. but until you experience it for yourself

  561. it is not going to make sense

  562. you're not going to see how much it is worth

  563. giving up everything in this world

  564. to follow Christ for until you see it for yourself

  565. until God opens up your eyes

  566. and you see it for yourself you'll never understand

  567. it cannot be explained

  568. it's that powerful

  569. and Satan blinds the people of this world

  570. because they belong to him

  571. now in Luke chapter 4 verse 6

    Luke 4:6

  572. now this is talking about the temptation of Christ

  573. and as Satan has taken Jesus up to the mountains

  574. and he took him up to the highest peak

  575. and he shows him

  576. he's like showing him all the kingdoms of the earth

  577. and he says to Jesus

  578. I will give you the glory of these kingdoms

  579. and authority over them the devil said

  580. because they are mine to give to anyone I please

  581. everything in this world

  582. we love so much

  583. I don't know about you guys

  584. there's so many things I'll write around I see

  585. I'm like man that's awesome

  586. that's beautiful

  587. I'd love to own that piece of land

  588. I'd love to have that

  589. I'd love to do this

  590. like everything that we see is so great

  591. because God created everything when he created it

  592. he said it was good

  593. and Satan has moved into this world

  594. and he set up dominion over this world

  595. and because he has dominion

  596. he can take anything that God created for good

  597. and he can pervert it and distort it

  598. and use it for evil

  599. and that's why we have to be very careful

  600. as we navigate through this world

  601. because anything that is good

  602. can be used to lure us and entice us away from our Father

  603. it doesn't mean that it's sinful

  604. doesn't mean that what you're doing is sinful

  605. anything good can be used to lure us away from our Heavenly Father

  606. we got to be aware of that

  607. he's the God of this world

  608. he's offering this to Jesus

  609. if Jesus will bow down and worship him

  610. do you know why Satan is so willing to give up all the kingdoms of the earth

  611. dominion over the earth

  612. so that Jesus would bow down and worship him?

  613. because he values your soul

  614. more than he does any dirt on this earth

  615. see Satan's an eternal being

  616. your soul's an eternal thing

  617. it's like gold to dirt

  618. he would rather have dominion over you

  619. than have dominion over the kingdoms of the earth

  620. and if he can convince Jesus to bow down and worship him in that moment

  621. the ability for Jesus to be the sacrifice for our sins

  622. to save our souls

  623. is null and void

  624. and he has authority and dominion over every single one of us

  625. but because Jesus Christ refused

  626. and he paid the price for our sins

  627. our souls can belong to God

  628. he wanted dominion over all of us

  629. and so his greatest goal in life

  630. is to set up dominion over you

  631. your soul is worth far more than anything in this world to Satan

  632. you know we treat our souls like they're garbage

  633. we treat our bodies, the temple, the spirit

  634. we treat our souls

  635. that this eternal thing is going to cross that threshold from this world to the next

  636. we treat it as insignificant and unimportant

  637. but Satan would give up everything

  638. he has dominion over it to get it

  639. and Jesus has already given up everything so that he could have you

  640. the people or the creator himself values us

  641. and so does his enemy

  642. that's why he offered the world in order to get your soul

  643. point number three

  644. he wants to go unnoticed

  645. now this is tough

  646. because we see this extreme example of this man

  647. but I remind you of things like this because in Mark

  648. whenever this man is possessed by a demon or a spirit

  649. and he's in the synagogue he's in Jewish territory in Mark one

  650. and then what you see in this passage in chapter five is

  651. is that he goes to the other side of the lake of the Gerasenes

  652. where you have the pagan culture

  653. the non-Jewish territory, the capitalist region

  654. if you've been in our Bible study on Wednesday night

  655. you'd know all about this

  656. but if not that kind of give you an idea what's going on

  657. so they go to the other side of the lake

  658. this I mean it's sinful over there

  659. they're not honoring God's law, they're living in idolatry

  660. there's some wild stuff going on

  661. they're still practicing like child sacrifices in some places

  662. I mean they're just doing all kinds of crazy stuff

  663. and so whenever they go on this side of the lake

  664. it's like

  665. this dude's so far gone

  666. but over here it was still being hidden

  667. see Satan does not care to be noticed

  668. but it eventually comes to the point where he is noticed

  669. but nobody cares anymore

  670. we'll talk about that a little bit next week

  671. but in this moment when we talk about

  672. he wants to go unnoticed

  673. Satan revealed his plan when he first rebelled against God

  674. and he fell miserably

  675. God cast him out

  676. God rebuked him

  677. God set up the day that he would be punished

  678. and destroyed for all eternity

  679. because of that decision

  680. when he revealed his plan

  681. he didn't make it very far

  682. so he's not going to reveal his plans

  683. he wants to go unnoticed

  684. in 2007 casting crowns wrote this song

  685. called slow fade

  686. because sin is something that grows

  687. I guarantee you nobody in this room woke up

  688. or when you were a kid said

  689. I think I'd like to kill people one day

  690. or I think I'll be a bank robber when I grow up

  691. or I'm going to be a drunk who rides a moped for the rest of my life

  692. when you're like eight years old nobody says that

  693. but it happens right

  694. okay it's a slow fade

  695. I'm going to read you the verse

  696. first verse and chorus of this song

  697. be careful little eyes what you see

  698. it's the second glance that ties your hands

  699. as darkness pulls the strings

  700. be careful little feet where you go

  701. for it's the little feet behind you

  702. that are sure to follow

  703. now you think about that

  704. because whatever it is that you do

  705. you can rest assured that your kids

  706. are going to try to do it better or worse than you

  707. when we talk about a slow fade

  708. it's not just a slow fade in your own life

  709. it's a slow fade for generations

  710. like the side of the garrisons

  711. that side of the lake they had been fading

  712. for hundreds of years

  713. they were mired up in sin forever

  714. the people in Israel

  715. they were getting to the point where God said

  716. okay it's time Jesus you're up

  717. it's a slow fade

  718. and the people who are coming behind you

  719. will do it worse than you're doing

  720. when you think oh it's my sin

  721. it's what I'm doing

  722. it's not a big deal

  723. I can guarantee you your kids

  724. will do that sin better and more

  725. and harder than you could ever dream of

  726. because it will be a part of who they are

  727. it's a slow fade

  728. when you give yourself away

  729. it's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray

  730. and thoughts invade

  731. choices made

  732. a price will be paid

  733. when you give yourself away

  734. people never crumble in a day

  735. you can say ma'am

  736. James you're

  737. it's a little too much

  738. I think you're overthinking it a little bit

  739. okay

  740. we may not have a guy living in our graveyard

  741. across the street howling at the moon

  742. but just over a week ago

  743. there was a guy right down here at the stop sign

  744. killed his own daddy

  745. and his daddy's caretaker

  746. chopped him up and burned the bodies

  747. right here

  748. not in some big city

  749. it's right down the road

  750. it's a slow fade

  751. nobody ever looked at that 46 year old man

  752. when he was 3 or 4 years old and said

  753. I bet he's gonna kill his daddy one day

  754. but he did it

  755. you look at your life

  756. you look at your kids

  757. you look at what it is

  758. that you're clinging to

  759. that you're not surrendering

  760. and you understand something this morning

  761. and you take it with you

  762. and you remind yourself of this every single day

  763. whatever it is that you're clinging to in this life

  764. it will grow

  765. it may seem innocent

  766. it may not seem like a big deal

  767. but sin very much grows

  768. it will take hold of your life

  769. and it will take hold of your kids

  770. and then your grandkids

  771. and in generations to come

  772. you have no idea what that will be

  773. but the awesome thing is

  774. is that if you give your heart to God

  775. it's the same thing

  776. it grows

  777. it's a slow too

  778. you know people want to get saved

  779. and they want to enter into this relationship with God

  780. and they just want things to be turned around and made perfect

  781. and God just do all this magical stuff

  782. like take away, I don't know if you're my age and you're 41

  783. take away 41 years of sin overnight

  784. just make your life perfect like nah

  785. it takes time

  786. it takes time

  787. but it grows too

  788. and God can redeem anything

  789. He can take anything

  790. that was meant for evil

  791. and He can use it for good

  792. He can take any kind of sin

  793. and He can use it to glorify Himself

  794. and you look back at Matthew 1

  795. and you look at the genealogy of Jesus

  796. and you look at all those people who are listed in that genealogy

  797. there are a lot of sinners in that

  798. there was adultery and illegitimate children in that line

  799. there were prostitutes in that line

  800. God can take anything and use it for His will

  801. and His glory, He can redeem anything

  802. He can fill us, He can set us free

  803. He can give us life

  804. but I promise you that Satan wants to control you

  805. and put you in bondage

  806. and the whole time He's doing it

  807. He really don't care anything about you

  808. that's the whole thing about it is

  809. you're just a pawn in His game

  810. you are nothing more than a tool

  811. to break God's heart who's already paid the price for you

  812. so that you could be with Him

  813. you're just a tool

  814. you're a tool in God's hands too

  815. God wants you to use you to build His kingdom

  816. and to be a part of His family

  817. and to receive the inheritance that He's prepared for you

  818. to claim you as one of His children

  819. to give you an eternal home

  820. and yeah we're tools in God's hands

  821. but the tool that Satan wants to use you for

  822. will be discarded and thrown away

  823. it's the difference between being a tool of quality

  824. that you keep and pass it down to generations

  825. versus something you buy at Dollar General

  826. and you throw it in the trash and get rid of it later

  827. that's how Satan uses us

  828. his goal is to confuse and disorientate

  829. to have dominion

  830. and to really go unnoticed

  831. because as long as he goes unnoticed nobody really cares

  832. the moment he makes himself known

  833. and you got people just right down the road killing other people

  834. and doing what this man did just over a week ago

  835. it begins to change our perspective of things like

  836. maybe things are a little worse than what we think they are

  837. it opens up our eyes

  838. who will you be possessed by?

  839. let's pray

  840. Father God

  841. thank you for the opportunity

  842. to read your word once again

  843. to surrender to you

  844. to love you

  845. and devote ourselves in these moments

  846. for every man woman

  847. every young person in this room

  848. I pray Father that they would humble themselves before you

  849. and simply surrender and say God

  850. you can have me

  851. you can have all of me

  852. I don't want to slowly fade into what this world has to offer

  853. or what Satan is offering because

  854. I truly believe that it is not good

  855. and in my heart I can feel that

  856. I can already see those things in my life that are not good

  857. and how they're affecting me

  858. God I pray that you would speak to our hearts this morning

  859. help us to surrender to you and give you free reign

  860. for your Holy Spirit to fill us

  861. to set us free

  862. and to be used to build your kingdom

  863. Lord we love you this morning

  864. we ask all this in Jesus name, Amen
