  1. You're the one I hold on to for the beauty of your name, my soul will live to say, Jesus

  2. I love you, my soul will live to say, Jesus I love you, my soul will live to say, Jesus

  3. I love you.

  4. Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity we have to come and to do what we're doing

  5. today.

  6. God, I dare to say that there's a bunch of people in this room who have plates that are completely

  7. full and there's a lot of other things they could be doing right now.

  8. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the time to come and just submit and to humble ourselves

  9. before you.

  10. And those aren't two words that we really like to hear or we like to do a lot of times.

  11. But Lord, if we truly understand what it is that you did for us and the price you paid

  12. for our sins, Lord, we would be joyful to come and to submit and to be humble to you.

  13. And so in these next moments, as we read your word, as we just contemplate some of the

  14. things that you've called us to do as believers and some of the expectations you have for

  15. our life, I pray that we would be humble and that we would submit to you.

  16. It's a privilege to be here and there's many who can't.

  17. So Lord, we pray for our brothers and sisters who are homebound.

  18. God, we pray for Mr. Bruce's family with the loss of his mom this week.

  19. We pray for Brenda Cantrell with the loss of her husband.

  20. Lord, we pray for the people who've had procedures and surgeries this week and God

  21. just be with them.

  22. Thank you that we're able to be here.

  23. God, thank you that we're able to just listen to your voice and let you guide us in these

  24. moments.

  25. Help us to be obedient to you.

  26. Jesus, we love you.

  27. We thank you and we ask all this in your precious and holy name.

  28. All God's people said, Amen.

  29. You may be seated.

  30. Well, if you're new or if you've missed a few weeks, we're in our third week of talking

  31. about marriage and I said at the beginning that as soon as we start talking about this

  32. that me and Hannah would probably start arguing, didn't know it would be over Bible

  33. trivia and had to wear my long sleeves and my collar today to hide the bruises.

  34. So it was brutal last night, man.

  35. I got a twitch.

  36. I have to go see a therapist.

  37. So preface this when we talk about marriage, one of the things that was just really heavy

  38. on my heart is I know we live in a culture where there's so many people around us, even

  39. for ourselves.

  40. Most of us have been affected by divorce in some way or another.

  41. We have family members who've been divorced.

  42. Maybe we've been through a divorce.

  43. Maybe you were a child who saw your parents go through a divorce.

  44. And so in no way, shape or form are we talking about this to shame anyone who's been

  45. through any of that.

  46. One of the things we've said from the beginning is you can't change the past.

  47. You can't undo what's been done.

  48. The only thing that we can do is move forward from this point forward and be obedient

  49. to God the way that he wants us to be.

  50. Now in that we do have to realize that there's a lot of things that God calls us to do

  51. as Christians.

  52. It's very different from the world.

  53. It should not be surprising that the way he's called us to do marriage would be very

  54. different from the way the world does marriage.

  55. So if you're new today, understand this like you may see what you think are good

  56. marriages.

  57. You may see what other people are doing.

  58. You may see what other people are posting online.

  59. Do not try to copy anyone else.

  60. Come humbly before the Lord.

  61. Make this decision in your life where you say, OK, God, I'm not an expert.

  62. I've seen a lot of really bad marriages.

  63. I've seen some good ones.

  64. But Lord, I'm willing to submit to you to read your word, to be obedient in that so

  65. that my marriage will be exactly what you want it to be.

  66. And that should be our desire not to be like somebody else, not to chase after

  67. somebody else's hopes and dreams, but to be what God has called us to be.

  68. And today we're talking about picking your spouse.

  69. And the title of the sermon is Your Battle Partner.

  70. OK, now many of us will desire love, especially you young ladies, you will

  71. desire love.

  72. There's nothing wrong with that.

  73. Men, you will want to feel love, too, in a different way, but you will still

  74. want to feel love.

  75. There's a reason why romantic novels, romantic comedies like they do great in

  76. the box office because we want that.

  77. We love that.

  78. We love the thrill of dating someone, spending time with them, doing all this

  79. stuff. And in the midst of life of what we're doing, we just really need to

  80. understand today that love is a wonderful, beautiful thing.

  81. It's a great blessing from God.

  82. But love can be a very fickle thing and it changes.

  83. And it's an emotion that can change in your life very easily with the drop of a

  84. hat. And if you don't believe, let's read some scripture.

  85. Let's talk about it from God's perspective.

  86. Revelation 2, verses four through five.

  87. The apostle John is on the island of Patmos.

  88. God appears to him and starts giving him all these revelations, all these visions.

  89. And he appears to him and John sees Jesus in his transformed image like his

  90. glorious image.

  91. And he's afraid.

  92. He falls down before Christ and Christ reaches out his hand, strengthens, do not be

  93. afraid, which is something we see in scripture constantly.

  94. Do not be afraid.

  95. He stands John up, says, listen, I want you to take these messages to these

  96. churches and tell them what I'm about to tell you.

  97. So in chapter two, verses four through five, the message he sends to the

  98. church in Ephesus, Ephesians, Book of Ephesians.

  99. This is the church in Ephesus.

  100. But I have this complaint against you.

  101. You don't love me or each other as you did at first.

  102. Look how far you have fallen.

  103. Turn back to me and do the works you did at first.

  104. If you don't repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its

  105. place among the churches.

  106. So here's Jesus sending this message to the church in Ephesus and he's telling

  107. the entire church, he's like, look, you don't love me like you did at first.

  108. And if we are people who can take Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, if we

  109. really believe what we say, we believe that he's perfect, like he never did

  110. anything wrong.

  111. He loved us before we ever loved him.

  112. He gave up his life so that we may have life.

  113. He gave, he poured out his blood so that we could have eternal life.

  114. And if we can fall out of love with him, we can most certainly fall out

  115. of love with our spouses.

  116. How many times have you ever heard somebody say, we just fell out of love.

  117. We just don't love each other anymore because life happens and it's hard and

  118. situations and circumstances are going to change.

  119. The person that you walked down that aisle with and you stood before God and

  120. you made that covenant with before God may not have turned out to be the man

  121. or the woman that you hoped or imagined that they would be.

  122. And that's not necessarily their fault because you're doing it together.

  123. And so we take a little bit of the blame.

  124. Like we didn't help them become who God wanted them to be.

  125. We didn't help them who become they should be.

  126. But also like we just don't know what the future is going to hold.

  127. You might go into this thing and be broke for the rest of your life.

  128. That's hard.

  129. You might go into this thing thinking you're going to have 10 children

  130. and never have not one child.

  131. And that's hard.

  132. You may come into it not expecting any children have 10 children.

  133. That's really hard.

  134. We don't know.

  135. And if we can fall out of love with the people that we say that we love the

  136. most maybe we shouldn't be necessarily walking around just looking for this

  137. opportunity to have this magic moment.

  138. Love at first sight sounds great sells a lot of books sells a lot of movies.

  139. But man that's tough because the person you can fall in love with maybe

  140. a slob and you don't know it yet.

  141. They may be lazy and you don't know it yet.

  142. They may not brush their teeth and you don't know it yet.

  143. So you better pick somebody that you can go to battle with.

  144. And I say that because if you've ever talked to somebody who's actually

  145. fought in a war there's a camaraderie that they build together that they

  146. don't have with anyone else.

  147. You know we've had we've got a lot of veterans in our church.

  148. Some of them have passed on but the ones who are still living they've

  149. been out of the service for 30 40 50 years.

  150. And they will still go to their reunions with their fellow soldiers like

  151. hours away they'll drive hours to go be with them because they share

  152. something that no one else can possibly understand because they've

  153. spilled blood they've shed blood they've watched people that they

  154. love and care about like die before them.

  155. There's an experience there that's like nobody else can understand

  156. what they've been through together.

  157. And that can translate to the workforce that can translate on the

  158. to many different things because if you go through hard times together

  159. there's a bond that's built between you and the person that you

  160. make it through hard times with it.

  161. Nobody else can understand.

  162. There will always be a bond there.

  163. And so when I say pick your battle partner you need to understand

  164. that as you go into marriage it's going to be a spiritual

  165. battle.

  166. The reason why is because as soon as it starts the first thing

  167. you do is a spiritual thing.

  168. You walk down the aisle you go you make the covenant before

  169. God you quote that covenant you recite that thing together in

  170. front of everyone who's there to witness it and God himself.

  171. And if you miss that one that was sermon one of the series.

  172. And as soon as you say I do Satan is going to be on you like

  173. white on rice glass of milk white paper plate snowstorm.

  174. He's going to try to bust it up and so you better find you a

  175. partner that you know that you can go to battle with.

  176. Second Corinthians chapter 6 14 to 18 Paul writes and says don't

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  177. team up with those who are unbelievers.

  178. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness.

  179. How can light live with darkness.

  180. What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil.

  181. How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever.

  182. And what union can there be between God's temple and idols.

  183. For we are the temple of the living God as God said I will

  184. live in them and walk among them.

  185. I will be their God and they will be my people.

  186. Therefore come out from among unbelievers and separate

  187. yourselves from them says the Lord don't touch their filthy

  188. things and I will welcome you.

  189. I will be your father and you will be my sons and daughters

  190. says the Lord Almighty.

  191. That's a great promise to have but it's a very specific calling

  192. that we have as Christians to really make sure that we are

  193. not putting ourselves in a situation where we can be

  194. affected or drug down or manipulated by people who do not

  195. believe in God and serve him and are devoted to him in the

  196. same way that we are.

  197. The first thing we should be looking for is someone that we

  198. can do life with and go to battle with is a real Christian.

  199. Point number one.

  200. Merry a real Christian.

  201. Now this sounds simple but man it's so important because

  202. there's a lot of people out there who can say it.

  203. They got a lot of good words to say.

  204. They can they can speak the name of Jesus that they can

  205. talk a game they dress nice they go to church they'll play

  206. the part but remember Jesus said to those who called him

  207. Lord and cast out demons and done mighty works in his name

  208. depart from me.

  209. I don't know you.

  210. There's a lot of people who can say they know Jesus and

  211. not know him.

  212. So we need to find people who are real Christians because the

  213. truth is most people aren't going out in our community in

  214. our society and saying yeah I live for the devil.

  215. He's my best friend.

  216. I like him that I do stuff for him.

  217. Nobody's saying that but in truth we live in a society where

  218. people are very much internally self focused.

  219. It's all about self health self wealth.

  220. I want to prosper.

  221. I want to be the best me.

  222. I'm going to look out for me to make sure I'm doing good and

  223. that added in itself.

  224. There's nothing more satanic than for somebody who lives

  225. their life completely focused on themselves.

  226. That's exactly what Satan did.

  227. He rebelled against God.

  228. He tried to promote himself to be worshiped above God.

  229. And if we as people live our lives completely internally

  230. focused on ourselves we're basically following in the

  231. footsteps of Satan.

  232. And that sounds really weird.

  233. Nobody would like know that or think that but when you get

  234. down to the nitty gritty of it that's exactly what it was.

  235. People who lived their lives for themselves are their own

  236. gods.

  237. And if life is all about them you better know and

  238. understand that eventually one day they'll expect you to bow

  239. down to them too.

  240. So the spouse that you pick could very easily become your

  241. idol if you're not careful because if you're committed to

  242. making the covenant last and they're all about them you're

  243. going to have to be all about them in order to honor the

  244. covenant that you made.

  245. And there's a lot of people who've put their spouses in

  246. those situations many many times.

  247. So you got to marry somebody who's a real Christian.

  248. And you do that by looking at their fruits because there's a

  249. lot of people who say they've accepted Jesus as Lord and

  250. Savior.

  251. There's very few people who's actually filled with the

  252. spirit of God.

  253. The fruits of the spirit love joy peace patience kindness

  254. goodness gentleness faithfulness self-control non

  255. fruits of the spirit that should be evident in every

  256. believer's life.

  257. Those are not things that necessarily become natural.

  258. They will be things that God has to work in your life on but

  259. they should be things that are pretty evident that we

  260. should be able to observe.

  261. So the trick is is when you're talking to people and

  262. you're looking at dating so you young people if you're

  263. dating thinking about getting married don't listen to the

  264. words that the person you're dating saying watch them watch

  265. what they do.

  266. Don't listen to what they're telling you on a date

  267. night across from the table and they're just speaking

  268. these things.

  269. Watch what they do.

  270. Watch how they interact with other people.

  271. Look at their life.

  272. Look at the disciplines of their life.

  273. Look at their commitments.

  274. Look at their friends.

  275. There's nothing more revealing about a person than the

  276. people they surround themselves with and it doesn't

  277. matter whether you're five or whether you're 70 you

  278. surround yourselves with the wrong people you will

  279. become like them.

  280. You aren't that strong no matter how old we are.

  281. Watch how they treat everyone and listen at how they

  282. talk about everyone else.

  283. You know me and Hannah joke a lot of times because

  284. we'll be around different people a lot family members

  285. you know just different things and we'll hear them

  286. say stuff about other people and the first thing we'll

  287. say when we get in the car is like I wonder if they

  288. talk about us like that if they're talking about

  289. other people like that they'll talk about you like

  290. that.

  291. And you observe these people that you're dating that

  292. you're thinking about marrying you need to observe

  293. them in stressful hard situations.

  294. Don't go out on dates.

  295. Don't go don't don't go do fun things.

  296. That's easy.

  297. Those are celebration times.

  298. Those are times when everybody's going to look

  299. their best you're going to smell your best you're

  300. going to dress your best you're going to have

  301. you're going to practice all the answers you have

  302. everything say go do something hard together.

  303. You want to know who somebody is watch them in

  304. a hard situation.

  305. One of the most memorable moments of my faith in my

  306. life was whenever I was in youth group and I

  307. probably shared this before I was like 16 years

  308. old first saved we go out somewhere we're doing a

  309. youth event and I can't remember exactly what

  310. happens but whoever was in charge of the place

  311. we were at was not cooperating and had to

  312. really kind of like mess some stuff up.

  313. And if you know Greg Edmonds Greg Edmonds is

  314. like one of the most like he's just he's

  315. different OK.

  316. And I remember I would have been hot.

  317. I was wanting to just like go up there and just

  318. like start chewing this guy out because that's

  319. the way I was raised.

  320. You say what's on your mind you let it fly and

  321. then you might apologize but probably not

  322. afterward.

  323. And Greg handled it with such grace and I could

  324. tell he was furious like you could see it in

  325. him. He was fierce and handled it with such

  326. grace totally different outcome ended up being

  327. really good like work through that situation.

  328. And I can remember as a 16 year old looking at

  329. that thinking like man that's totally different

  330. than how I would have handled it.

  331. And it was so much better and the result was as

  332. good as I could have ever asked for it to be if

  333. I would have been hollering and screaming

  334. about it. And that stood out to me.

  335. And if you want to know who somebody is watch

  336. them in the hard times watch them when things

  337. get hard because then the things that are

  338. coming out of their mouth is really what's

  339. down deep that they're maybe keeping back.

  340. Then the way they're treating people you can

  341. see how they're going to treat you because

  342. you can guarantee this whenever you get

  343. these going to be some tough days and you're

  344. going to get really mad at each other.

  345. And there's some times where I've done said

  346. things to Hannah that I hadn't done and said

  347. that any of you and she didn't deserve that.

  348. But I did it. And so if you want to know who

  349. somebody is you need to make sure you know who

  350. they are in the tough times.

  351. In Ephesians chapter 4 verses 31 to 32 Paul

    Ephesians 4:31–32

  352. writes to the church in Ephesus which we just

  353. talked about in Revelation a second ago he

  354. says get rid of all bitterness rage anger

  355. harsh words slander as well as all types of evil

  356. behavior instead be kind to each other tender

  357. hearted forgiving one another just as God

  358. through Christ has forgiven you.

  359. The reason why it's important for you to marry

  360. a Christian is is because a Christian in

  361. general is called to love everyone and serve

  362. everyone and forgive everyone underneath the

  363. calling of Christianity in general.

  364. And so how much more should they do that in

  365. their relationship with Jesus Christ.

  366. But if you marry somebody who just yeah I'm a

  367. Christian but they don't live it yeah I'm a

  368. Christian but they haven't fully

  369. surrendered their life and they're living for

  370. themselves and they're doing all this other

  371. stuff they're not going to forgive and let

  372. me remind you inside of marriage you're

  373. going to make a mistake you're going to say

  374. something to make your spouse mad you're

  375. going to do something to hurt them and you need

  376. to know that you're with a battle partner

  377. that's going to forgive you and be willing

  378. to move forward in spite of your bonehead

  379. mistake. They're going to make mistakes and

  380. you're going to need to be able to forgive

  381. them and work through it and move forward.

  382. And if you're not a Christian there's no

  383. guarantee that somebody might be willing

  384. to do that but as a Christian we are

  385. called to do that for everyone especially

  386. our spouses.

  387. Point number two marry the one you can

  388. suffer with. We all want fun we all want

  389. vacations we all want luxury we all want

  390. comfort comfort but the truth is any

  391. coward can love during the good happy

  392. times. Any coward can be your friend any

  393. coward can stand beside you when things

  394. are good and you have plenty of money

  395. and the success is going well and you

  396. feel like you're accomplishing things

  397. there will be a lot of people who will

  398. stand around you and rub elbows with you

  399. during those times. But when things get

  400. tough that's when people begin to peace

  401. out. That's whenever they start running

  402. in another direction and you need to

  403. find someone whom you know that will

  404. suffer with you because there's going

  405. to be so many hard and difficult times

  406. in your marriage. Like it's great it's

  407. a wonderful blessing from God but it's

  408. going to be hard and you shouldn't be

  409. surprised because if you got a best

  410. friend when you were growing up you

  411. know if you spent more than like two

  412. nights together with your best friend

  413. you were fighting right with your best

  414. friend and you had to go home and take

  415. some time apart. It's like when you live

  416. with somebody day in and day out you're

  417. doing life together you're making

  418. decisions together stressful decisions

  419. together life offering decisions

  420. together it's going to get tough. You

  421. got to find someone that you can

  422. suffer with. Matthew 16 verses 24 to 25

    Matthew 16:24–25

  423. as Jesus is speaking to his disciples he

  424. said if any of you wants to be my

  425. follower you must give up your own way

  426. take up your cross and follow me. If

  427. you try to hang on to your life you

  428. will lose it but if you give your life

  429. up for my sake you will save it. As a

  430. Christian we are literally called to

  431. give up our lives to take up our cross

  432. and suffer for the kingdom of God to

  433. suffer in the name of Jesus Christ. When

  434. we talk about the importance of man or

  435. Christian you if you marry a true

  436. Christian a true believer they are

  437. called to suffer and so in the midst

  438. of marriage when marriage gets hard and

  439. whatever comes in whatever situations and

  440. circumstances a true believer is not

  441. going to run at the side of suffering

  442. because they've already committed their

  443. life to suffering in the name of Jesus

  444. and the covenant they made before God

  445. with you you can be confident to know

  446. that they love God so even when I'm not

  447. there even when I'm not able to keep an

  448. eye on them and make sure they're not

  449. doing things I don't like or talking to

  450. somebody that I don't like or what you

  451. know whatever it may be that you say I

  452. know that they love Jesus and I know

  453. that they want to honor him and I

  454. know that they're gonna honor that

  455. covenant and because of that I can rest

  456. easy and trust in them to know that the

  457. Lord's got it because they're gonna be

  458. faithful we got to find people that are

  459. willing to suffer along with us

  460. there's very few people who are gonna

  461. love you when you're sick there's very

  462. few people who are gonna love you when

  463. you're broke you can be successful and

  464. I know you young men there's always this

  465. pressure of I've got to prove myself I

  466. gotta have so much money I gotta show

  467. that I can provide I got to show that

  468. that I'm responsible and any woman can

  469. love you as long as you're providing all

  470. those things and you got success and

  471. you can do that a lot of women will be

  472. attracted to you for that but it's

  473. not what matters and women you can say

  474. well I gotta look so beautiful I gotta

  475. look so good you spend all your time and

  476. money and getting ready and trying to

  477. wear the right clothes and makeup and

  478. hair and trying to look good and do all

  479. these things and maybe go along and do

  480. all these hobbies with him even though

  481. you hate them you just do stuff with

  482. him because you want him to like you

  483. and we put all this effort into it

  484. and the truth is is like we're dating

  485. and we're making decisions off getting

  486. married based off the best of

  487. circumstances in the moment for just a

  488. short time I mean let's be honest

  489. whether it's a few months or maybe even

  490. a year even a couple years you can hide

  491. a lot of things in that time you can

  492. push it down before it comes out you

  493. need to know that the person that

  494. you're gonna marry is going to be

  495. willing to suffer with you because

  496. life's not always gonna be great you

  497. may have to walk in one day and say I

  498. got laid off or I got fired or I screwed

  499. up or this is what it's gonna be and you

  500. need to know that the person's like okay

  501. we'll get through it because their heart

  502. is committed to Christ and not committed

  503. to your performance point number three

  504. marry the one who will fight with you

  505. not actually fight with you but fight

  506. alongside of you life is a battle and

  507. you need someone who is going to fight

  508. along with you to know that they are

  509. going to have your back no matter what

  510. because the truth is you're gonna have

  511. enemies everywhere you're gonna have

  512. enemies at work you're gonna have

  513. enemies in life you're gonna have

  514. enemies in your own family even your

  515. own blood relatives and in some ways

  516. can become enemies maybe even not

  517. necessarily meaning to it's just things

  518. happen and you need to know that no

  519. matter what through every circumstance

  520. despite the enemies that your spouse and

  521. you are absolutely committed to one

  522. another no matter what your own enemies

  523. will be in your house even your kids

  524. will be your enemies so you're married

  525. this morning you got kids no your kids

  526. they can be you and your wife's or

  527. your your husband's enemy and if you

  528. don't believe me they're cruel like

  529. they're they're sophisticated talented

  530. double agents like they are like you

  531. love them as soon as you start talking

  532. with one another they come up and they

  533. start talking like mint they just don't

  534. even wait for you to stop they just

  535. start talking while you're talking is

  536. that I'm not gonna let you have a

  537. conversation without acknowledging me

  538. first I'm pretty confident you all

  539. experience that please tell me you

  540. you're getting what we're getting okay

  541. thank you all right you shut the door

  542. they they could be on the other side

  543. of the house playing they could be

  544. outside as soon as they hear your

  545. bedroom door shut they want your

  546. attention so anytime that you're trying

  547. to give to one another even your own

  548. children can pull away from you in that

  549. regard so you got to find someone that's

  550. gonna fight with you this on your team

  551. that has your back no matter what and

  552. if you've ever been in a situation in

  553. life where you're like I have I have

  554. nobody that I can call that is a

  555. terrible feeling that's a terrible

  556. feeling to be in a situation was like I

  557. have I have no one to call in this

  558. moment to help me with what I'm dealing

  559. with and the wonderful thing about

  560. marriage is is like we like to think oh

  561. they're so good-looking all they're

  562. they're great man all they're just

  563. they're the greatest prize you can get

  564. but just to be in marriage one day and

  565. to go through something and to feel like

  566. you couldn't even look at your husband

  567. and talk to him about what's going

  568. on you couldn't look at your wife and

  569. tell her what you're going to because

  570. they're not that person and that's

  571. heartbreaking that's not the way that

  572. God intended it to be and so even going

  573. into this having someone who you know

  574. is going to get your back is

  575. understanding that you also have one

  576. who's committed to serving Christ and

  577. doing their part inside the marriage to

  578. make sure that you're going to do this

  579. thing together that you know that I'm

  580. gonna do my part what God's called me

  581. to do and you're gonna do your part

  582. what God's called you to do and

  583. because of that we can work together

  584. then we know that we can make it

  585. through this that we're gonna fight with

  586. one another now first Peter chapter 5

    1 Peter 5:1–2

  587. verses 1 through 2 it says in the same

  588. way you wives must accept the authority

  589. of your husbands then even if some

  590. refuse to obey the good news your godly

  591. lives will speak to them without any

  592. words they will be won over by

  593. observing your pure and reverent lives

  594. skip to verse 7 of first Peter chapter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  595. 5 in the same way you husbands must

  596. give honor to your wives treat your wife

  597. with understanding as you live together

  598. she may be weaker than you are but she is

  599. your equal partner in God's gift of new

  600. life treat her as you should so your

  601. prayers will not be hindered now now

  602. we talk about these things and we talk

  603. about making sure that you have someone

  604. who's going to go to battle with you

  605. and fight alongside of you you can't

  606. trust someone to fight alongside of you

  607. in the battles outside if you can't

  608. trust them to do their role on the

  609. inside and I think that's one of the

  610. things that when you talk about military

  611. and people who've been the battle

  612. together to be able to trust someone

  613. when you're going in and you know your

  614. life's on the line to know that that

  615. guy or that girl has your back and

  616. they're willing to like die for you

  617. and they're willing to even take

  618. someone else's life for you that's a

  619. bond that you cannot buy and you

  620. don't know what's going to happen

  621. until you get in the thick of it

  622. and it's one of the things we talk

  623. about in football because always coach

  624. the line I coached the chubby guys

  625. because I was a chubby guy and saying

  626. look you have to do your job if you

  627. don't do your job even though no one's

  628. celebrating you and most people aren't

  629. watching you if you don't do your job

  630. everything that's going on behind you

  631. it's all going to crash and burn you

  632. got to be able to trust and believe in

  633. the person that you're going into

  634. this with that they're going to do

  635. their job and so ladies we talked

  636. about this a little bit last week the

  637. whole concept of the authority and

  638. submitting we don't like those things

  639. but we have to remind ourselves do I

  640. believe in Jesus Christ and do I believe

  641. in his word and am I willing to put my

  642. trust and faith in what it says and I'm

  643. am I willing to do this to honor God

  644. and to not get hung up on it because

  645. right before it speaks personally to the

  646. women in the men it says submit to one

  647. another so remember that scripture

  648. calls us as men we're called to submit

  649. to our wives too not in the same ways

  650. it's very different but we submit to

  651. one another and then you look at first

  652. Peter 5 7 she's your equal partner in

  653. God's gift to new life your wife is

  654. your equal partner so we're not throwing

  655. around these terms of authority as this

  656. way to get what we want and just just

  657. have the last decision and have these

  658. presidential veto powers that we can

  659. just say nope yep nope yep on all the

  660. stuff that we want to do know like

  661. she's your equal partner we don't take

  662. advantage of the authority that God's

  663. given us but we we tread very carefully

  664. because we're gonna have to give an

  665. account for that Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3:18–19

  666. verses 18 through 19 wives submit to

  667. your husbands as fitting for those who

  668. belong to the Lord husbands love your

  669. wives and never treat them harshly

  670. there's a reason why in scripture it

  671. reminds us of all the things that

  672. we're supposed to do it's not gonna

  673. come natural we're gonna have to choose

  674. to do this choose to submit to the Lord

  675. choose to commit ourselves to love to

  676. honor to respect and all those things

  677. and the question is are we willing to die

  678. to ourselves in order to go to battle

  679. with our spouses if you're a real

  680. Christian you've already been called to

  681. die you've already been called to die to

  682. the world but you enter into that

  683. covenant are you willing to die to

  684. yourself and begin this new life with

  685. your spouse to make sure that you're

  686. gonna honor that covenant more than

  687. anything else because the truth is is

  688. it's different there's nothing else

  689. like it I had a friend he and his

  690. girlfriend were living together and

  691. they got engaged they lived together for

  692. a while before they got married and we

  693. did their premarital counseling and I

  694. married them and I just kind of had

  695. him one-on-one right before the

  696. wedding I said look I was like you

  697. need to know when you get married it's

  698. gonna change he's like I don't understand

  699. like like what what's gonna take we

  700. already live together we're paying bills

  701. we're doing life together like we're

  702. doing this together I said you need to

  703. know it's gonna change there's something

  704. about it right now in your life you

  705. are living in sin because I told him

  706. I'm not look there's no way you're

  707. living together and not being intimate

  708. with one another and I always tell

  709. people if you're living together and

  710. you're not being intimate that's more

  711. weird than the other like there's

  712. something wrong so you need like

  713. understand that so you're being

  714. intimate you're living in sin Satan's

  715. not worried about you right now as soon

  716. as you say I do you're entering into a

  717. spiritual battle that's going to be a

  718. totally new aspect of your marriage and

  719. your relationship that you haven't

  720. experienced yet we marry them on

  721. Saturday they go on their honeymoon for

  722. a week they come back home they're home

  723. for a week and literally after a week of

  724. being at home he calls me he's like you're

  725. right it's different automatically we

  726. need to understand that when we get

  727. married and we go down to that altar

  728. and we say those vows we're putting

  729. ourselves out there for Satan to come

  730. in and start dancing a jig in our lives

  731. to try to disrupt the very covenant

  732. that we've committed ourselves to

  733. before God and if he can disrupt that

  734. he can disrupt your entire family if you

  735. have children he can disrupt your

  736. children's lives forever friendships

  737. church relationships your spiritual life

  738. your own relationship across he knows

  739. man if he can tear that one thing

  740. apart if he can split you up he'll

  741. wreak havoc for years to come and so

  742. when you go into marriage it's a

  743. wonderful gift from God but it is most

  744. certainly a hard and difficult battle

  745. that you're going into so you better

  746. make sure you're picking the right one

  747. who's got your back and willing to fight

  748. with you let's pray father thank you

  749. for this day and this time together

  750. Lord I thank you for the men and

  751. women in this room and I pray that you

  752. would work and move in their hearts

  753. and lives and speak powerfully to them

  754. Jesus use your word to shape us and

  755. mold us and Lord even some that we

  756. don't understand or comprehend I pray

  757. that you would open up our eyes and

  758. help us to see what it is that you've

  759. called us to do as believers and as

  760. husbands and wives Lord guard our our

  761. couples who are already married prepare

  762. teach and mature the ones who are

  763. close and Lord even for the really

  764. young ones we pray that you're already

  765. preparing them and also preparing someone

  766. for them for years to come that they

  767. can get married to and fight the battle

  768. with Jesus we love you today we thank

  769. you we ask this in your name amen
