  1. He is worthy, he is worthy He is worthy, he is worthy

  2. He is

  3. Well Father we are very thankful to be here

  4. and God we are especially thankful for your Son Jesus who is worthy

  5. and when it all comes down to it

  6. for every man and woman in this room

  7. that is a question that they have to answer inside their own hearts

  8. and inside their own minds

  9. Is he worthy?

  10. Do I really believe that Jesus is worthy?

  11. Because the answer to that question

  12. will determine

  13. whether or not I even need to hear

  14. the scripture that is going to be read

  15. and the words that are going to be said

  16. And Father this morning I pray that your Holy Spirit

  17. would be in this place

  18. God that you would

  19. you would just be in our hearts and speak

  20. in a powerful and loving

  21. and amazing way that would just help us to see your truth today

  22. Father we need you in our lives

  23. there is not a single person in here

  24. including myself who does not need you more

  25. that you don't want to do more with

  26. that you don't want to use in a powerful way

  27. to build your kingdom

  28. to help others and to glorify you

  29. So Father we ask this morning that

  30. we would open up our hearts to the one who is truly worthy

  31. of being able to change them

  32. and helping us to see what truth really is

  33. Father we pray for Mr. Ralph this morning

  34. pray for Mr. Ted

  35. we thank you for helping them in their procedures this week

  36. and being with them in that

  37. and Father this morning we pray for Zach

  38. and his wife and baby and Lord we just pray that

  39. that she's in labor right now

  40. and about to deliver God that your hand would be with them

  41. and Lord we're yours

  42. we're your people whether we know it or not

  43. so I pray God that you would help us to see

  44. help us to see clearly

  45. help us to know you

  46. help us to love you

  47. we thank you we love you and we ask all this in Jesus precious and holy name

  48. all God's people said

  49. the past couple weeks we've been talking about dying to live

  50. we've talked about the need for us to die to sin

  51. the need for us to die to the world

  52. and today we're talking about the need for us to die to ourselves

  53. more than sin more than the world

  54. you yourself will be your greatest obstacle

  55. in your relationship with Christ

  56. because the sin

  57. we understand like sin is sin

  58. the Lord identifies it the Lord calls us away from it

  59. he calls us to die to the sinful things of the world

  60. in order to pursue him and to follow him

  61. and to dwell with him and have that relationship with him

  62. he calls us to die to things of the world

  63. because even though the world is good and there are a lot of good things in the world

  64. there's a lot of things that we can take in this world and we can abuse it

  65. and manipulate it and use it for sinful things and put above God

  66. and in the aspect of our very own lives

  67. we by nature are self-preserving

  68. we love to make sure that we are taken care of no matter what

  69. it is the original sin

  70. I don't know if you realize that or not the sin in the garden might have been man's original sin

  71. to take of the tree

  72. but Satan's original sin was to try to elevate himself above the Lord

  73. to make himself number one above God

  74. got an Amen already

  75. there we go

  76. our lives

  77. and the need to die to ourselves

  78. will be the greatest obstacle we have to overcome as Christ

  79. or to overcome in Christ

  80. we had to go to Sam's yesterday

  81. I don't know if you've ever been to Sam's on a Saturday at lunchtime

  82. if you're ever afraid of hell, go to Sam's on Saturday

  83. but we were there, we missed our usual time

  84. and we had to go because we were running out of food

  85. so we served our punishment

  86. and it was absolutely amazing because there was plenty of food

  87. they weren't running out of anything

  88. they had stuff stacked in the aisles and the shelves were full

  89. and there were just people

  90. as soon as people would leave, like 10 more people would show up

  91. that's the first time I've ever been there on a Saturday

  92. it was an eye-opening experience

  93. and even though there was plenty of food

  94. and there was plenty of everything to go around

  95. and obviously everything was working as it should

  96. it was amazing to see how unhappy and angry people were

  97. despite nothing being in short supply

  98. everyone was frustrated, everyone was mad

  99. and basically it just came to the point of

  100. that for most people everyone else was an inconvenience for them

  101. like I have my buggies full, I have everything I need

  102. there's no short supply of anything

  103. but we're mad at everybody because they're in the way

  104. and they're taking up too much time

  105. everybody in the parking lot was honking because she wanted by

  106. and everybody was trying to get gas and it was a nightmare

  107. and people were just mad because

  108. they weren't getting what they wanted in that moment

  109. even though they weren't really being robbed of anything

  110. and as people our natural tendency is to take ourselves

  111. and put ourselves above all things

  112. put ourselves above God, put ourselves above others

  113. and that's exactly what Christ has called us not to do

  114. you know we're called to put Him as one

  115. love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength

  116. and then to love your neighbor as yourself

  117. and yet our greatest tendency is to preserve our time

  118. our energy, our resources, our finances, our wants, our desires, our hopes and our dreams

  119. and we will discard most other people in order to achieve those things

  120. even people that we should love and care about the most sometimes

  121. we will push them to a side to chase what it is that we want

  122. when Jesus speaks to people while He's on earth

  123. He does not give easy commands

  124. He does not give love and fuzzy and warm things

  125. to give to people and say it's easy to follow me

  126. yet it's quite the opposite

  127. most of the things He says when you come and follow me

  128. it's going to be hard and you need to understand it's going to be hard

  129. and you need to count the cost

  130. and you need to understand what it truly means to follow Jesus Christ

  131. and so as we talked about dying to ourselves this morning

  132. I want us to look at Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  133. we're going to read 4 verses verse 23-26

  134. Jesus is preparing His disciples over and over and over again

  135. He's talking to them about He's going to die

  136. He's telling them and predicting His death

  137. He's calling His shot like we talked about back at Easter

  138. and as He's doing this

  139. there's a crowd of people around Him

  140. and in verse 23 it says

  141. then He said to the crowd

  142. if any of you wants to be my follower

  143. you must give up your own way

  144. take up your cross daily

  145. and follow me

  146. if you try to hang on to your life you will lose it

  147. but if you give up your life for my sake you will save it

  148. and what do you benefit

  149. if you gain the whole world

  150. but are yourself lost or destroyed

  151. if anyone is ashamed of me and my message the Son of Man

  152. will be ashamed of that person when He returns to His glory

  153. and then the glory of the Father and of the holy angels

  154. and what I want to talk about today

  155. is this understanding of

  156. this is a passage of scripture

  157. along with many other passages of scripture

  158. that I'm going to read

  159. that is difficult and it's very hard to swallow

  160. because the American church has done this amazing job

  161. of preaching the gospel and trying to convince people to follow Christ

  162. and give their lives to Christ

  163. and so you have all these people who are saying

  164. if you simply believe

  165. and you ask Jesus in your heart

  166. and you forgive your sins

  167. you pray this prayer after me you will be saved

  168. right?

  169. and that's kind of how it's gone

  170. every service that I've been to

  171. there's been an invitation to the altar

  172. and a salvation message just kind of like

  173. pray this prayer after me do this

  174. and what I want us to see this morning is

  175. Jesus never said that

  176. never once did Jesus say

  177. pray this prayer after me

  178. He talked about belief, He talked about faith

  179. and those things are very important

  180. and this morning as we talk about this

  181. if you've prayed that prayer

  182. and you said you believe

  183. I'm not trying to say that you're not saved

  184. so don't misunderstand that

  185. because there are passages of scripture

  186. like Romans 10, 9 and 10

  187. if you believe in your heart and your mouth

  188. that Jesus is Lord you shall be saved

  189. and those are great verses

  190. they're very encouraging

  191. but then you have to

  192. what do we do with Luke 9 verses 23-26

    Luke 9:23–26

  193. where Jesus says

  194. if you want to be my follower

  195. you must take up your cross

  196. daily

  197. what do you do with that?

  198. and there's an understanding that

  199. yes there's a moment where we receive

  200. Christ as Lord and Savior

  201. and we can be welcomed into the family of God

  202. and we can be forgiven of our sins

  203. and there can be great joy in that moment

  204. but following Christ is not a moment

  205. it is a life

  206. it is a calling

  207. it is a calling to not only

  208. follow but to die

  209. and to do it daily

  210. and we're not just dying to sin

  211. and we're not just dying to the world

  212. but Jesus even calls you this morning

  213. and has always called us as believers

  214. to die especially to ourselves

  215. no one will keep you out of heaven

  216. but you

  217. no man, no thing

  218. nobody

  219. nobody can keep you out of heaven

  220. but you

  221. and the refusal to follow Christ

  222. the way that he's called us to

  223. so point number one

  224. all these are questions today

  225. very fitting for the last song that we sing is like

  226. who is worthy?

  227. is he worthy?

  228. and if he's worthy

  229. then the answer is going to be easy

  230. and if he's not worthy

  231. the answer is going to be hard

  232. and you're not going to know what the answer is

  233. so point number one this morning

  234. is who do I follow?

  235. that's a question that every single one of us

  236. have to answer

  237. who do I follow?

  238. and there's going to be some people in this room

  239. that you absolutely 100% you follow yourself

  240. you follow your desires

  241. you follow your wants

  242. you follow your dreams

  243. your hopes, your ambitions

  244. and that's okay because we're people

  245. and we're sinful by nature

  246. we follow what we desire

  247. some people may be a little more willing to follow somebody else

  248. to follow culture

  249. to follow

  250. you know trends and things like that

  251. but a lot of us

  252. are inevitably

  253. self-centered and selfish

  254. whether we want to realize or say that out loud or not

  255. we are

  256. I am

  257. I will be the first one to tell you I am

  258. Hannah can testify to that pretty quickly

  259. but I'll tell you I am too

  260. but we have to ask this question

  261. who do I follow?

  262. in Luke chapter 14 verses 25 through 26

    Luke 14:25–26

  263. Jesus addresses the crowd again

  264. and it says a large crowd was following Jesus

  265. he turned around and said to them

  266. if you want to be my disciple

  267. you must by comparison

  268. hate everyone else

  269. and then that's mind-blowing

  270. here's Jesus

  271. who says by comparison

  272. hate everyone else

  273. so understand and look at the verbiage

  274. not hate everyone else

  275. by comparison hate everyone else

  276. love the Lord your God with all your heart

  277. soul, mind and strength

  278. love your neighbor as yourself

  279. the greatest commandments

  280. but by comparison

  281. the next people who fall in that line

  282. it looks like you hate them

  283. compared to how much you love Jesus

  284. and we can't fathom that

  285. because you have these people in your life

  286. your spouse, your children, your parents

  287. your family, your friends

  288. who you can see and you can touch

  289. and they're tangible and they do things for you

  290. and they've sacrificed for you

  291. it's like how do I by comparison

  292. hate that person to love God

  293. whom I can't see, whom I can't touch

  294. who I'm literally by faith

  295. just believing that he's there

  296. and I'm just trusting in this thing

  297. that I'm not really even sure inside my own heart

  298. if he's real and the heavens real

  299. and this is all going to work out

  300. and it goes back to the whole question of

  301. what exactly do you believe?

  302. what do you believe about the God

  303. whom you claim to believe in?

  304. is he worthy?

  305. if he's worthy you will follow him

  306. if he's not worthy you're not going to follow him

  307. that's the question you have to answer

  308. and Jesus lays out these hard teachings

  309. he builds up a crowd

  310. people are following him

  311. he doesn't give them warm fuzzy feelings

  312. he says if you want to follow me

  313. by comparison it must look like you hate everybody else

  314. and that's hard teaching

  315. and being a Christian is believing

  316. and yet the words of Christ are

  317. take up your cross daily and die

  318. and if you want to follow me by comparison

  319. it looks like you hate everyone else

  320. your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters

  321. yes even your own life

  322. otherwise you cannot be my disciple

  323. and Jesus is drawing the line

  324. and he's saying look if you're not willing to do this

  325. here's the line

  326. make the decision to cross the line

  327. and I guarantee you there's some people here this morning who's like man

  328. I don't know I didn't know there was a line

  329. I just always thought I was good

  330. and now there's a line and now I don't know what to do with my life

  331. or my hands

  332. what do you do with that?

  333. and the truth is that we have to take the words of Jesus into consideration

  334. and apply it to our lives

  335. we cannot ignore it

  336. we cannot base our entire theology off of one verse that says one thing

  337. and completely ignore other verses that say and add great value to it in other ways

  338. but one thing that I can tell you as I promise you

  339. if you believe in Jesus Christ and you just believe and you're not dying daily

  340. your relationship with him and your faith with him is probably empty

  341. and unsatisfying at best

  342. and it's probably not very important to you

  343. but I can guarantee you that if you've made the decision to die daily

  344. and you are loving him and putting him as number one in your life

  345. then there's probably an immense amount of joy in your life

  346. and hope and peace and satisfaction in that

  347. that looks really weird to the rest of the world

  348. and they cannot understand it

  349. because you don't know until you know

  350. you don't know if it's worth it

  351. you don't know if it's worth it to follow Jesus

  352. until you step out in faith and you start doing it

  353. and you see the fruit and you feel it in your heart for yourself

  354. in John chapter 8 verse 12

    John 8:12

  355. Jesus spoke to the people once more and said

  356. I am the light of the world if you follow me you won't have to walk in darkness

  357. because you will have the light that leads to life

  358. you will not know what it's like to truly live until you die

  359. you will not know what it's like to walk in light until you leave the darkness

  360. and no matter how good this world may be

  361. and no matter how good your life may be

  362. until it's Christ it is dark

  363. so whatever you're putting is number one in your life it is darkness

  364. Perry was praying last night

  365. I think Pastor Nina or somebody did a lesson on the man that built his house upon the rock

  366. and Perry's been infatuated with that here lately

  367. and so the past few weeks he's been praying

  368. Lord help us to build our house upon the rock like the wise man

  369. which is Jesus and then he just kind of threw in this tagline last night

  370. in his prayers like and not to build our house upon the sand which is the devil

  371. and I was like okay so after prayer time I just talked to him about

  372. I was like buddy you know that whenever we talk about building our house upon the sand

  373. it's not necessarily that we're building our house upon Satan

  374. most people you don't have to build your house upon Satan to build it on sand

  375. you know sand can be anything like it can be your toys it can be it can be your hobbies

  376. it can be your career it can be money it could be anything in your life

  377. like anything that you build your life on that's not Christ is sand

  378. and so we talked about that it was kind of kind of fascinating that he was equating that

  379. and when you look at this this idea of our life

  380. anything that we put and build our life on it's all temporary in all faiths

  381. this is what Jesus is trying to teach his followers

  382. this is what Jesus wants Christians to know even now as we're meeting together today

  383. sin is not beneficial sin comes with punishment and consequences

  384. the world although good in many ways can be used for sin

  385. and can distract and take away from our relationship with Christ

  386. and then our own hearts and our own desires will pull us away from the Lord

  387. and keep us from truly committing to him and dying to him the way that he's called us to

  388. the question is who will we follow?

  389. Point two, question number two

  390. will I take up my cross daily?

  391. I will preach this until the day that I die

  392. I will say this over and over and over again

  393. I do not believe that salvation is a moment

  394. I do not believe that in a moment when you say

  395. I love Jesus come into my heart be the Lord in my life

  396. that you're saved and then it's done

  397. I believe salvation is a lifelong thing that Jesus is leading us through

  398. and guiding us through and shaping us and molding us

  399. and it is a lifelong commitment and service to him

  400. I believe that with all my heart

  401. I believe that whenever I was 16 years old and I sent one of them pews right there

  402. that used to be there and I was clinging to the back of that pew

  403. and I did not want to get up and come to this altar

  404. I believe that when I was praying the prayer of salvation

  405. that the Lord came into my life and he saved me from my sins

  406. but the work was not done

  407. I don't know about you

  408. I think it'd be pretty frustrating if I was up here this morning

  409. and I was still on the same physical and spiritual maturity level

  410. that I was at 16 years old when I was clinging to the back of that pew

  411. refusing to go to the altar

  412. I don't know how you feel about that

  413. but it would be really hard for me to follow a person from a spiritual context

  414. who refused to go to the altar

  415. and it's not that I was bad or it's not that the Lord wasn't working in my life

  416. or saving me in that moment from those sins

  417. but there was still a lot of work to be done

  418. and I've said it for the past several weeks

  419. I'm pretty stubborn, I don't die very easily

  420. the Lord has had to speak to me over and over and over again

  421. and a lot of times give me some pretty hard licks

  422. to convince me to die to some things in my life

  423. in order to continue to follow him and be where he's called me to be

  424. and I think that's for all of us

  425. you don't have to be in ministry for that to happen

  426. I believe that God wants to work in moving our lives

  427. throughout the entirety of our life

  428. and so whether you're 15 this morning

  429. or 3 this morning

  430. or whether you're 70 this morning and you're retired

  431. or maybe you've got one foot in the grave

  432. and you feel like your time's done

  433. and you have something for you

  434. and if he didn't you wouldn't be here

  435. but will I take up my cross and follow daily

  436. because it's a decision, Jesus said it

  437. we can't ignore it, Jesus said it, we cannot ignore it

  438. in Hebrews chapter 2 verse 1

    Hebrews 2:1

  439. the writer of Hebrews said

  440. so we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard

  441. or we may drift away from it

  442. you look at the entire book of Hebrews

  443. the entire book of Galatians

  444. so many other passages of scripture

  445. that warn us as believers

  446. to focus on the Lord

  447. to listen, to ponder, to carefully think

  448. and devote our lives to that

  449. for the fear of wandering away

  450. and let me remind you that every epistle in the New Testament

  451. that was written by an apostle

  452. or by someone who knew an apostle

  453. was written to a church

  454. Galatians, Ephesians, Corinthians,

  455. Colossians, all those were churches

  456. they're not just fancy names for a book

  457. that was a church that existed

  458. and so they wrote those letters to churches

  459. with people who were in those churches

  460. who professed to be Christians

  461. and all of them constantly warned those people

  462. don't do this, don't just run the race

  463. finish strong

  464. be careful not to fall into temptation

  465. be careful not to wander away

  466. be careful

  467. don't do this

  468. because there's a danger in our lives

  469. that if we don't focus on the Lord

  470. and we don't take up our cross

  471. and we don't die to everything daily

  472. we can drift away from the Lord

  473. and in John chapter 3 verse 3

    John 3:3

  474. Jesus is talking to Nicodemus

  475. he says I tell you the truth

  476. unless you are born again

  477. you cannot see the kingdom of God

  478. you cannot be born again

  479. and be the same person that you were before

  480. you've got to die

  481. that has to happen

  482. you have to die to become a new person

  483. and I believe that if you die daily

  484. you can be reborn daily

  485. God can help you be someone brand new today

  486. that you were not yesterday

  487. through the power of his spirit

  488. in 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 23-25

    1 Peter 1:23–25

  489. Peter writes

  490. for you have been born again

  491. but not to a life that will quickly end

  492. that's good

  493. I don't think anybody is ready for it to quickly end

  494. but you've been reborn to a life that will not quickly end

  495. your new life will last forever

  496. because it comes from the eternal living word of God

  497. and as the scriptures say

  498. people are like grass

  499. their beauty is like a flower in the field

  500. the grass withers and the flower fades

  501. but the word of the Lord remains forever

  502. God is the good news that was preached to you

  503. it's eternal

  504. it's an eternal thing

  505. God is not in the moment business

  506. God is in the eternal business

  507. and so when he calls us to follow him

  508. it's not a calling to just make this decision

  509. in this one moment

  510. and then you live the rest of your life

  511. just as you did before

  512. and expect to go to heaven and receive rewards and riches

  513. and share in the glory and honor of Jesus Christ

  514. his physical life for you and for myself

  515. but he calls us to die

  516. and he calls us to do it daily

  517. so are you taking up your cross

  518. and will you do it daily

  519. question three last one

  520. this is the question that most people ask

  521. what will I benefit

  522. what's in it for me

  523. give me a reason

  524. to do this

  525. because I need to know

  526. that it's going to be worth what I'm giving up now

  527. to have something better then

  528. and do I believe that what is available then

  529. is going to be better than what I have now

  530. that's what we're talking about

  531. what will I benefit?

  532. so let's just name some very common things

  533. if you cling to your career in this life

  534. what do you benefit if you cling to it?

  535. at best you get retirement

  536. and the sad part is that eventually

  537. once you retire

  538. you'll be forgotten

  539. those businesses, those organizations

  540. those things that you work for they move on

  541. people may remember you for a little while

  542. but eventually

  543. you'll be forgotten

  544. you'll have retirement if it's still there

  545. by the time we get old enough to retire

  546. maybe, maybe not

  547. you cling to your status

  548. status is always forgotten

  549. one of the amazing things that I've noticed here lately

  550. we've done a lot of stuff with the

  551. baseball and softball teams up at school

  552. and you start naming all these players

  553. who are really good from the past

  554. and a lot of times they don't know who they are

  555. which isn't casting shade on them

  556. like they're not

  557. we have a young group of people coming through

  558. who have information overload

  559. they have the ability to like Google anything

  560. and so the necessity to know it isn't as big

  561. whenever I came through

  562. you didn't have that information

  563. so you just like you tried to remember as much as you could

  564. and so like all these old players that we always heard about

  565. we heard our parents and all these other people

  566. we knew who they were

  567. they don't know who they are

  568. I was talking with somebody on the phone

  569. talking about Pastor Mickle

  570. most of you in this room probably don't even know who Pastor Mickle is

  571. I never had the privilege of meeting him

  572. never heard a bad thing about the man

  573. had so many people talk about

  574. he was

  575. the best man they ever met

  576. huge influence on their life

  577. Pastor Deere at this church

  578. I don't even know how many

  579. probably several decades

  580. the kids building was named after him

  581. when it was the fellowship building

  582. and if I said Pastor Mickle

  583. how many of you in here would know who he is?

  584. like six people

  585. a hundred of you don't

  586. and as great of a man as he was

  587. and as much as he did for the Lord

  588. even from a spiritual perspective

  589. from a worldly perspective of knowing who he is

  590. you don't even know who he is

  591. and his ministry

  592. is an enormous part of the reason you get to be here today

  593. and be in the service

  594. and you don't even know who he is

  595. so don't cling to your status

  596. whether it's spiritual or physical

  597. because eventually it'll be forgotten

  598. if you cling to your house at best

  599. one day someone else will live in it

  600. hopefully it won't be tore down

  601. hopefully it won't fall in or be destroyed

  602. the best thing you can hope for

  603. is that somebody else will live in it

  604. when you're gone

  605. cling to your car

  606. it's already junk

  607. as soon as you bought it

  608. it lost value

  609. it'll be wore out

  610. you'll probably go through two or three cars in your lifetime if not more

  611. if you like me and you buy used cars you'll go through more

  612. you cling to your hobby

  613. you'll get pleasure for a season

  614. I get to see a lot of people as they get older

  615. get to the point in life where they just can't do stuff anymore

  616. they just make that transition

  617. where they're just not able

  618. to be physically active

  619. and do the things that they used to do

  620. and the things that they love

  621. I've seen so many people

  622. who had hobbies and love doing stuff

  623. get to the point where they just can't do it

  624. and it's miserable

  625. you're going to have to give it up anyway

  626. even if you do it till the day you die

  627. you're going to die

  628. it's going to be gone

  629. it's temporary

  630. you cling to your relationship

  631. at best till death do its part

  632. you cling to your friendships

  633. at best it may last a lifetime

  634. still going to come to an end

  635. I don't know if you've ever thought about that before

  636. all the things that we want to cling to we lose anyway

  637. Brian and Ashley go to a lot of estate sales

  638. all the things that people cherished and saved

  639. and hoarded up their whole lives

  640. that were important to them

  641. their kids sell it and give it away

  642. we lose everything that we cling to

  643. but what do we gain if we follow Christ?

  644. we can give up a career

  645. there's promise, provisions

  646. and eternal life from the Lord

  647. we can give up status

  648. and the Lord promises that the least

  649. will be the greatest

  650. and the greatest shall be the least

  651. we give up the house

  652. you get a mansion you give up a car

  653. you get to walk on the streets of gold

  654. you give up hope and joy

  655. that surpasses any kind of joy

  656. that you get from your hobby

  657. you give up a relationship

  658. I believe God has a better one

  659. you give up a friendship

  660. I believe God has a more beneficial one

  661. and I've seen it in my own life

  662. I can't tell you like

  663. how you're going to know this

  664. the only thing I can tell you is

  665. in all these things

  666. God has given me more

  667. than I could have ever asked for

  668. for me personally

  669. and the peace of mind

  670. the absence of guilt

  671. the eternal joy, eternal hope, eternal life,

  672. eternal fellowship with others

  673. and eternal relationship with Christ

  674. that's what you're promised

  675. but the question is

  676. is do you believe

  677. that He's worthy

  678. of giving it up

  679. because you're not going to give it up

  680. if you don't believe that He's worthy of it

  681. you're not going to die to it

  682. in Galatians 6 verses 8 and 9

    Galatians 6:8

  683. Paul wrote to the church of Galatians

  684. says those who live only to satisfy

  685. their sinful nature

  686. will harvest decay and death

  687. from that sinful nature

  688. but those who live to please the Spirit

  689. will harvest everlasting life

  690. from the Spirit

  691. so let's not get tired of doing what is good

  692. at just the right time

  693. we will reap a harvest of blessing

  694. if we don't give up

  695. Paul wrote that to Christians

  696. he wrote that to people

  697. who profess to believe in Jesus Christ

  698. and Paul acknowledged them as Christians

  699. and if we live to satisfy our sinful nature

  700. we will harvest death and decay

  701. but if we live to please the Spirit

  702. we will harvest everlasting life

  703. don't get tired of doing what is good

  704. some of you in this room

  705. have been following the Lord

  706. and you've started to wonder

  707. maybe you're in this little lull

  708. in your relationship with Him

  709. where you feel like man

  710. I'm just in this little funk right now

  711. and I haven't seen anything good

  712. and I'm just wondering is this really worth it

  713. everything I've given up

  714. everything I've sacrificed

  715. everything I've done for God

  716. is that really worth it?

  717. don't give up

  718. at God's right time

  719. and reap the blessings

  720. of all the things that you give up for Him

  721. and you may receive some of those blessings

  722. in this life

  723. but you can most certainly rest assured

  724. that you will receive those blessings in eternity

  725. which is more important

  726. because they will last there

  727. and all the blessings that you get in this life

  728. will be gone anyway

  729. you with me this morning?

  730. we can't give up

  731. and if you're sitting here today

  732. and you're just like man is it worth it?

  733. is it worth it for me to give this up?

  734. you'll never know until you do it

  735. you'll never know until you step out in faith

  736. and you give it up for the Lord

  737. and you die to it and you follow Him

  738. I believe

  739. that the majority of people in this room this morning

  740. probably don't have some great sin in their life

  741. that they need to be cleansed from

  742. there's probably some things that we're dealing with

  743. some things that we're struggling with

  744. in our relationship with the Lord that

  745. we probably need to deal with and surrender

  746. but I guarantee you almost every single person

  747. in this room

  748. has something in their heart

  749. and in their mind and in their life

  750. that we have just refused to die to

  751. that we have clung because it's ours

  752. it's who we are

  753. it's what we want

  754. it's what we've aspired for

  755. and you've probably already sacrificed

  756. a million other things in this life for that thing

  757. and it feels like to die to it now

  758. would have been a waste for all the other stuff

  759. and the only thing I can tell you is

  760. it's not a waste

  761. if you cling to it

  762. you'll lose it

  763. if you give it up for His sake

  764. you will find it

  765. Jesus promises that

  766. over and over and over again

  767. and the last passage of scripture in John 12 verses 23 through 27

    John 12:23–27

  768. Jesus is predicting His death again

  769. and Jesus replied

  770. now the time has come for the Son of Man

  771. to enter into His glory

  772. and I tell you the truth

  773. unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies

  774. it remains alone

  775. you cannot live

  776. you cannot be reborn until you die

  777. but its death will produce many new kernels

  778. a plentiful harvest of new lives

  779. and you will know and have the confidence that Christ

  780. has worked and moved in your lives when your life begins to produce a harvest

  781. because when you die to yourself

  782. the Lord can use you

  783. to produce a harvest for Him in His kingdom

  784. He can use you to witness and minister to other people

  785. He can use you to testify to other people

  786. He can use you to lead other people to the saving knowledge of Christ

  787. but He can't use you to do that until you die

  788. those who love their life in this world will lose it

  789. those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity

  790. and anyone who wants to serve me must follow me

  791. because my servants must be where I am

  792. and the Father will honor anyone who serves me

  793. and the most heartbreaking part is verse 27

  794. where Jesus says, now my soul is deeply troubled

  795. should I pray, Father, save me from this hour

  796. but this is the very reason I came

  797. Jesus is communicating His death

  798. He's communicating His sacrifice

  799. He's letting them know that it's about to come

  800. and He is not excited about it

  801. He doesn't want to do it

  802. He sits in the garden

  803. He bows down and prays, He says, Lord, let this cup pass from me

  804. Please, if it's your, anything's possible with you

  805. If you can, let this cup pass from me

  806. yet not my will but your will be done

  807. Jesus was not excited to go to the cross

  808. He didn't wake up that morning and jump for joy and say, oh boy, today's the day

  809. He knew that it was not something that He was wanting to do

  810. He addressed that several times in Scripture

  811. and He says, yeah, but this is the reason I came

  812. He came to die

  813. He was given life so that He could die

  814. You were not here this morning and you were not called by God

  815. and saved from your sins so that you could continue on in your sins

  816. You were not saved from the world so that you could continue on living in the world

  817. and you were not saved from yourself so that you could go on satisfying and gratifying yourself

  818. You were given new life in Christ so that you could die

  819. That's the reason

  820. And Jesus does not ask us to do one single thing that He has not already done Himself

  821. He died so that you and I could have life

  822. And He wasn't excited about it but it was the very reason that He came

  823. The very reason that we are saved is so that we can die to sin

  824. into the world and we die to ourselves so that you and I can produce a harvest for Christ

  825. 10, 50, and even 100 times greater than what we could ever dream be possible

  826. And I truly believe there's people in this room this morning

  827. who you think, man, I can't do that

  828. I'm too far in, too far invested

  829. There's no possible way to get out

  830. Like I'm stuck, I can't do this, you can

  831. In your own strength you can't do it but through Christ anything is possible

  832. What do you believe about the God that you say that you believe in?

  833. Through Christ all things are possible

  834. We can die

  835. It's not easy

  836. It's not desirable

  837. I guarantee there's nobody in this room this morning who's excited about that

  838. I was never not once excited about it

  839. Never not once excited about having to leave something that I wanted to do behind for the Lord

  840. But looking back on it, I'm grateful

  841. I'm so thankful because what He had for me was so much better than anything I could have planned for myself

  842. And when you can see that and experience it just a little bit

  843. It makes it a little easier to die the next time

  844. It's not always easy but it makes it a little easier as you keep going

  845. Because you know and you have a little tangible evidence to it

  846. But we've got to step out in faith and we've got to do it that first time

  847. There's no place for sin in a Christian's life

  848. There's no place for the world and there's no place for our selfishness

  849. Saved people are changed people

  850. Saved people are changed people

  851. Don't lie to yourself this morning

  852. We have to be willing to die

  853. Let's pray

  854. Father, thank you for the opportunity to be here

  855. Thank you for your word

  856. Thank you for your love and mercy and Lord

  857. Even in the midst of our stubbornness and our failures

  858. Lord, I myself have so many

  859. Lord, you are so merciful and gracious in our lives

  860. And so Father, I don't want anyone to feel like there's no hope

  861. There's no way out

  862. But God, I pray that you would speak powerfully and just remind us this morning that

  863. Lord, you died so that we could do this

  864. You died so that we could die

  865. You died so that we could turn away from all these things that are pulling us from you

  866. And turn to you and follow you

  867. And so God, I pray this morning that you would speak and work and move in a powerful way

  868. Lord, every person in this room would know that it was you speaking to their heart

  869. That it's not just words

  870. It's not just a crafty message Lord

  871. It's what your word says, it's what your scripture says

  872. So God, I pray that we would take it and we would apply it to our lives

  873. And live for you the way that you've called us to

  874. Jesus, we love you today

  875. We thank you so much and we ask all this in your precious and holy name

  876. Amen
