  1. In pensions of glory and endless demise,

  2. I'll never adore thee in evidence so bright.

  3. I'll sing with the glittery

  4. On crown, on thy ground,

  5. If ever I love thee,

  6. My Jesus did us now.

  7. Let us pray.

  8. Jesus, we just come to you in this moment,

  9. and I just pray that that just rings true,

  10. that song that we sing, that we truly love you.

  11. And God, I just pray for us, especially those who have been saved for a long time,

  12. that we can truly say, if ever I loved you, it's now.

  13. God, that it's not just something that you've done in the past that warmed our hearts.

  14. It's not just when we went to camp, or a convention, or a revival service,

  15. but God, in this moment right now, in going forward,

  16. tomorrow the next day, that truly we can say, we love you.

  17. And God, we can respond in love to you because we know how much we are loved.

  18. God, you call us into relationship with you.

  19. You call us into life with you.

  20. You call us into goodness.

  21. You have so many good things planned for us and on behalf of us,

  22. and we just say thank you for that.

  23. And I pray that everything that goes on here,

  24. in the service, everything that goes on, and everything as our church,

  25. it will be all for just showing our love of you, Jesus.

  26. We want to honor you.

  27. We want to glorify you.

  28. We want to build up your name.

  29. We want to build up this church for you.

  30. God, because of how good you are,

  31. in every moment of every day, we can have people who are willing to testify

  32. in a service, after a service, when they're gathering with people

  33. for lunch today, or tomorrow, or for coffee, whatever it is,

  34. that you will move Holy Spirit in our hearts so that we will be quick

  35. to talk about your love that you have given to us,

  36. and how we just simply love you in return.

  37. So, Holy Spirit, we just simply ask for you to come.

  38. God, be with all those who are not able to be with us today,

  39. whether they're sick, whether they're at the hospital, on vacation,

  40. whatever it might be, God, we pray that you will be near to them

  41. to know that they are missed and valued by their church.

  42. God, may they just also sense your spirit as well,

  43. that you are God, who the beauty of Pentecost is,

  44. that you are not confined to one place at one time,

  45. but God, you are all places.

  46. And right now, wherever believers are gathered, part of Graham Chapel,

  47. but just as the church as a whole,

  48. as churches all over our country and world are meeting,

  49. we pray, Holy Spirit, that you will do something great this morning,

  50. through your power and for your glory.

  51. And so, God, we just humble ourselves before you

  52. and use us in any way that you can to lift up and build up

  53. your kingdom in your name.

  54. And we pray this in your name, Jesus. Amen.

  55. You may be seated.

  56. Well, good morning.

  57. So glad that we are able to be here to worship the Lord this morning.

  58. So today is Pentecost.

  59. It's Memorial Day weekend as well as Pentecost.

  60. And so we're going to talk about Pentecost a little bit this morning

  61. and understanding the importance and significance of it.

  62. One thing that's interesting about Pentecost this year is,

  63. depending on when theologians and scholars look at

  64. when the actual year Jesus died and rose from the dead,

  65. there's a little bit of disagreements on if they think it was 30 AD or 33 AD.

  66. But if Jesus died and rose in the year 33 AD,

  67. then the first Pentecost would have taken place on May 24th, which is today.

  68. And so as we are celebrating Pentecost today and remembering

  69. the coming of the Holy Spirit, it has potentially been exactly

  70. 1,993 years since the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

  71. And it's really important to talk about the Holy Spirit,

  72. who the Holy Spirit is, all that he does in our lives.

  73. And we're going to come back and read a little bit

  74. of the passages about the Holy Spirit and about Pentecost all those years ago.

  75. But the reason why, spoilers, Pentecost is so important is

  76. because up until that moment in world history, church history,

  77. the Holy Spirit, the third person of God, the Holy Spirit only came

  78. in certain places at certain times.

  79. But in Acts chapter 2, that all changed and the Holy Spirit came

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  80. to all believers and unleashed himself to all people

  81. so that Christians not just in one place at one time,

  82. but all Christians everywhere can be filled with the Spirit

  83. to do the good things that God has called us to do.

  84. And so it's a really significant change that takes place

  85. in how God was operating that took place there.

  86. So we're going to look at a couple things that go along with that.

  87. Today we're talking about the sent out ones.

  88. And so I want to talk about what that means

  89. and how the Holy Spirit makes that happen.

  90. First thing I want to talk about, let's talk about the 12.

  91. The 12 disciples, the 12 apostles,

  92. are those the same thing or different things?

  93. Same thing.

  94. So it's really important.

  95. I never really noticed this, how it happens.

  96. In the beginning chapters of the Gospels,

  97. when Jesus is talking, he talks a lot about his disciples.

  98. Sometimes there's more than 12, sometimes there's 12,

  99. but he refers to them as the disciples.

  100. And then something changes, and all of a sudden,

  101. in Matthew chapter 10, they're started to be referred to

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  102. as not the 12 disciples, but the 12 apostles.

  103. And there's a really significant part of what's going on in that.

  104. So let's read a passage from actually before Matthew chapter 9,

    Matthew 9:35–38

  105. verses 35 to 38.

  106. And so this is Jesus as he's doing all this teaching and miracles.

  107. Jesus went through all the towns and villages,

  108. teaching in their synagogues,

  109. proclaiming the good news of the kingdom,

  110. and healing every disease and sickness.

  111. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them

  112. because they were harassed and helpless,

  113. like sheep without a shepherd.

  114. Then he said to his disciples,

  115. the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

  116. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,

  117. to send out workers into his harvest field.

  118. And we'll pause there.

  119. So that is the end of Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  120. That's how it ends.

  121. And so Jesus is looking out in the world,

  122. the beautiful world that we live in

  123. that's full of great things and full of sinful things.

  124. And he's saying the harvest is plentiful.

  125. There are a ton of people that don't know God,

  126. that haven't received salvation through Jesus.

  127. And so he's saying, disciples, you need to be praying.

  128. You need to be praying, praying, praying,

  129. that God will send workers out into the harvest

  130. because they're ready for it.

  131. The question is, are we going to be willing to go out

  132. and to teach them and show them the love of God?

  133. And so he's saying, pray for this.

  134. And again, he's telling that to his disciples.

  135. It says in that verse of verse 37,

  136. then he said to his disciples.

  137. And so that word disciple,

  138. it's a word we don't really use it much

  139. outside of church world,

  140. like tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon

  141. or night, whenever.

  142. If you're at work or whatever,

  143. you're probably not going to use the word

  144. disciple in a casual conversation.

  145. It's probably not going to happen.

  146. And that's okay.

  147. But let's make sure we're all on the same wavelength

  148. about what that word means.

  149. A disciple is just a student or apprentice.

  150. And when I think about it,

  151. I think more of the apprentice side of things

  152. and the student side of things

  153. because, thank goodness, it is summer.

  154. So all of you students don't have school right now,

  155. so you don't have to be a student in this moment.

  156. But in today's world, when we think about student,

  157. well, back in my day, when we were students,

  158. we would open these things called books.

  159. And then we'd get our paper out

  160. and these things called pens

  161. and we would take notes on what the teacher was saying.

  162. But we know that's not how they do it anymore.

  163. You all got your Chromebooks and stuff like that.

  164. But student, often we think about

  165. as someone who's just sitting there at a desk

  166. waiting to hear something

  167. and then maybe to take a quiz or test on it.

  168. And so when Jesus has his disciples,

  169. that's not what we're talking about.

  170. They were not students who were sitting there in a classroom

  171. just taking notes on what he's saying

  172. and ready to take a test.

  173. That's not what it was.

  174. It was more he invited them into his life.

  175. They would go and they would go the places he would go.

  176. They would hear what he was saying.

  177. Hopefully they were paying attention.

  178. And they were, at least Matthew was,

  179. because he thought to write it all down.

  180. Matthew and John, two of the 12 were paying attention.

  181. But that's what we see.

  182. They were not just listening,

  183. but they were invited into the ministry

  184. that Jesus was doing.

  185. And so he would show them

  186. and then they reach this point

  187. where they stop being students in the moment,

  188. but they go out and do what God has entrusted them.

  189. So he had his merry gang of disciples.

  190. He empowered them, laughed with them.

  191. He did life with them.

  192. And it was more than just sitting in a classroom.

  193. He really apprenticed them

  194. so that they could end up becoming leaders

  195. in the church going forward.

  196. So that's the end of chapter 9.

  197. Excuse me.

  198. Sometimes, at least for me when I'm reading the Bible,

  199. you know, when Matthew first wrote the book of Matthew,

  200. did he have all those nice chapters

  201. and verses in there when he wrote it?

  202. No, he didn't.

  203. Those were added later.

  204. And all those nice, convenient section titles,

  205. those were added later.

  206. So they were not in the original thing that Matthew wrote.

  207. And so when Matthew wrote it,

  208. what we read as Matthew chapter 9 verse 38,

    Matthew 9:38

  209. we kind of mentally pause there

  210. and then we reset our minds

  211. when we look up Matthew chapter 10 verse 1.

    Matthew 10:1

  212. Matthew didn't write it that way, though.

  213. And so the verses that we read

  214. in Matthew chapter 1 verses 1 and 2

    Matthew 1:1

  215. and the building verses

  216. directly come off of those verses in chapter 9.

  217. And so we don't want to turn off our minds

  218. and switch from chapter 9 to chapter 10.

  219. We want to keep reading what God has revealed to us.

  220. And so at the end of chapter 9,

  221. what we're reading is,

  222. he is talking to his disciples and says,

  223. pray for workers of the harvest, okay?

  224. That's what they're supposed to do.

  225. The very next verse, Matthew chapter 10,

    Matthew 10:1

  226. verse 1 and 2 will read,

  227. Jesus called his 12 disciples,

  228. so those very people he had just told to be praying,

  229. he called them to him

  230. and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits

  231. and to heal every disease and sickness.

  232. These are the names of the 12 apostles.

  233. So there's this very significant change

  234. that happens in the wording

  235. from the beginning of verse 1 into verse 2

  236. and going back to Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  237. Prior to Matthew chapter 10 verse 2,

    Matthew 10:2

  238. the word apostle is never used.

  239. They're always referred to as disciples.

  240. And the same thing is true in a parallel passage

  241. in Luke and Mark.

  242. They're referred to as disciples

  243. until this one moment

  244. when all of a sudden they're called apostles.

  245. And the reason they're called apostles,

  246. it's just really the technical definition

  247. of what the word is, right?

  248. The word apostle simply means sent out one.

  249. So a disciple is like a student or an apprentice.

  250. An apostle is one that is sent out.

  251. And so in these verses,

  252. Jesus says, pray for workers of the harvest,

  253. and then guess who's the answer to that prayer?

  254. Those same people that were just praying, right?

  255. And so they're praying for workers,

  256. and then Jesus says, okay, you know what?

  257. You've been praying, you've been listening.

  258. Now you're not just going to sit there anymore

  259. and hear what I have to say.

  260. I am now sending you out as an apostle

  261. to do the things that I've been teaching you, right?

  262. And that's the beauty of what God is.

  263. God doesn't want us just to sit all the time.

  264. He wants to use us in great ways in this world.

  265. And so, yes, the word apostle

  266. does mean some of these specific 12 people,

  267. but that word is used more broadly

  268. than just 12 people in the New Testament.

  269. So those 12 people are referred to as apostles.

  270. Judas is referred to as an apostle.

  271. He dies.

  272. He gets replaced by Matthias.

  273. Paul is referred to as apostle.

  274. Barnabas is referred to as apostle.

  275. James, the brother of Jesus,

  276. who is not one of the other Jameses,

  277. is referred to as an apostle.

  278. Silas, Timothy, Epaphroditus,

  279. and then depending on your interpretation

  280. of Romans chapter 16 verse 7,

    Romans 16:7

  281. Andronicus and Junia are also referred to as apostles.

  282. And so there are way more than 12 people

  283. who are referred to as apostles in the Bible.

  284. And again, the reason I find that really significant,

  285. and I want to communicate that to you this morning,

  286. is because there is this moment

  287. when they go from being disciples,

  288. learners, hearers,

  289. to ones who are then apostles sent out.

  290. And so that needs to happen

  291. in all of our life as Christians as well.

  292. Like, we should never outgrow learning.

  293. It doesn't matter what career you're in.

  294. It doesn't matter what profession you're in.

  295. We should always be learners.

  296. Like, if you look at some of the best athletes in the world,

  297. they continue to learn.

  298. They're coachable people.

  299. And so they learn things.

  300. But they're not just sitting and learning.

  301. They're going and doing what has been taught them

  302. and what has been told to them.

  303. And so as Christians,

  304. our sole purpose is not just to sit and be a disciple.

  305. The main goal is not to come to church,

  306. not to sit in church or go to Bible study

  307. or listen to Christian podcasts.

  308. Those are all very good things.

  309. But God wants to take us from disciples

  310. and turn us into apostles

  311. who go out on mission for Him, right?

  312. We must reach this point

  313. where we're going out and telling people.

  314. And it's really important to do that

  315. because it happens all the time in all these different realms.

  316. Like, I've got a three-year-old son and a two-year-old son.

  317. If I were to give them some baseball lessons

  318. and some of these young baseball players teach them,

  319. and they just sat there.

  320. All they did was take notes on what they were saying

  321. and practice all the time.

  322. At some point, I'd be like,

  323. Daniel, Asher, I paid for you to get better at baseball.

  324. You need to go and do what they're saying, right?

  325. Go play the sport.

  326. Go do something with this knowledge that you have.

  327. The same thing is true in our faith.

  328. We have to go and act out the faith

  329. that God has given us

  330. to do the things that He's called us to.

  331. And it could be in sports.

  332. It could be in music.

  333. Like, if someone had piano lessons

  334. and you learn to play the piano beautifully,

  335. at some point, you got to go play the piano for people, right?

  336. I'm not saying you got to play the piano

  337. in front of a large crowd,

  338. at least family and friends.

  339. Use the skills that you are learning

  340. to be a blessing to other people.

  341. And that is so true in our faith.

  342. In the American church,

  343. you know, we've got all kinds of problems

  344. in the American church.

  345. I think one of the problems

  346. that we have in the American church

  347. is that we're really good at consuming God's word, right?

  348. We preach it on Sundays.

  349. Come to Bible study on Wednesdays.

  350. We consume the word of God.

  351. But to some extent,

  352. the American church has become spiritually obese.

  353. We sit there and we consume,

  354. we consume, we consume, we consume.

  355. But we never work out our faith

  356. that God has called us to.

  357. Because at some point,

  358. it's not just about learning.

  359. It's about doing,

  360. having that faith in God

  361. to do the things that He's called us to.

  362. And so we have so many people

  363. that will come on Sundays,

  364. Wednesdays, all over our country,

  365. but they don't actually do the things

  366. that the Bible teaches us to do, right?

  367. That makes sense?

  368. And so it's good for us.

  369. Like, we all need to eat.

  370. You need to eat physically.

  371. I need to eat physically.

  372. But we also need to work out

  373. and to use those calories for good use.

  374. Spiritually, the same thing is true.

  375. Go consume the word.

  376. Go home, read the Bible.

  377. Listen to a good Christian podcast,

  378. things like that.

  379. But at some point,

  380. we have to not just consume it,

  381. but to use those calories,

  382. those spiritual calories

  383. that God is giving us

  384. to make ourselves healthier

  385. as well as other people

  386. in a spiritual sense.

  387. And you might be thinking,

  388. well, I just don't know enough.

  389. And you might not know a ton,

  390. but that's okay.

  391. One of the things that,

  392. well, let's read another verse.

  393. Matthew 28, verse 19.

    Matthew 28:19

  394. If you've not heard of this verse before,

  395. it's called the Great Commission.

  396. It's one of these last things

  397. that Jesus says

  398. before He ascends into heaven.

  399. So Jesus has already died,

  400. He's already rose from the dead,

  401. and then He's about to ascend to heaven.

  402. So He gives them one last mission,

  403. the disciples and the apostles,

  404. before He goes.

  405. Matthew, chapter 28, verse 19.

    Matthew 28:19

  406. Therefore, go.

  407. It's command.

  408. It's not like a,

  409. therefore, sit.

  410. Therefore, go and make disciples

  411. of all nations,

  412. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  413. and of the Son of the Holy Spirit.

  414. This is essential for all believers.

  415. And this is a command to go

  416. to the other side of the world.

  417. It's a command to go

  418. to the other side of the country,

  419. the other side of the state,

  420. the other side of the town,

  421. the other side of the road.

  422. Like, we are supposed to go

  423. to other people who we don't know

  424. or maybe we do know

  425. to tell them about Jesus,

  426. to help them become disciples

  427. and to know who He is.

  428. It's an expectation for all of us.

  429. This is not just a command for pastors,

  430. this is not just a command for missionaries,

  431. but all of us need to have

  432. this seriousness, this mentality

  433. to go out as apostles

  434. to help people see that.

  435. And again, you might be thinking,

  436. I'm not worthy,

  437. I'm not knowledgeable,

  438. I'm not skilled enough.

  439. And the truth is, you'd be right in that.

  440. Because I'm not knowledgeable enough,

  441. I'm not skilled enough.

  442. Pastor James isn't knowledgeable

  443. or skilled enough.

  444. We all have holes in our understanding,

  445. we all have holes in our faith.

  446. But God does not call the equipped,

  447. He equips the called.

  448. God is looking more

  449. for willing hearts,

  450. people who are willing

  451. to be servants

  452. and humble themselves before Him

  453. than He is looking for

  454. the most talented people

  455. on the planet.

  456. Read the Old Testament.

  457. The Old Testament gives

  458. so much hope for us

  459. because God takes

  460. a bunch of nobodies

  461. and does a lot of really good things

  462. through a bunch of nobodies.

  463. So that quote,

  464. God does not call the equipped,

  465. but equips the called.

  466. If it's up there,

  467. I don't know what it is.

  468. It's not original to me saying that.

  469. There's a bunch of people

  470. who've said that over the years.

  471. I tried to look up

  472. who first said it

  473. to give credit to the person

  474. because it's made an impact on my life.

  475. Best the internet can tell,

  476. the first person to say that

  477. was Smith Wigglesworth,

  478. which I think is the best name

  479. I've ever heard in my life.

  480. Smith Wigglesworth.

  481. I just think about, you know,

  482. you hear some of these names

  483. and how do people get their last names?

  484. It's like, oh, what's your last,

  485. what do you do for a living?

  486. I drive a cart.

  487. Carter, what do you do?

  488. I'm a blacksmith.

  489. Smith, what do you do?

  490. I wiggle around

  491. and can't stop moving my body.

  492. Wigglesworth, like,

  493. how do you get that name?

  494. I really want more information

  495. on that, but I don't have it.

  496. But the quote itself,

  497. God does not call the equipped,

  498. he equips the called,

  499. is essential for all of us

  500. because none of us

  501. have all the knowledge

  502. or abilities to do the things

  503. that God has called us to do, right?

  504. But He will give us

  505. what we need in the moment.

  506. You have everything you need

  507. to do what God has called you to do, right?

  508. Not to say, again,

  509. we should learn more.

  510. We should become more knowledgeable.

  511. We should seek to be more holy.

  512. But you have everything in this moment

  513. that God needs you to have

  514. to do the things

  515. He has called you to do.

  516. And when you need more

  517. giftings and abilities,

  518. God will give it to you.

  519. He has and will give you

  520. everything you need.

  521. He cares more about humility

  522. than prideful boldness.

  523. And again,

  524. if you don't think you're good enough,

  525. welcome to the club.

  526. Like, read about Moses

  527. in the Old Testament.

  528. He is like,

  529. God has to drag him

  530. to go do what He wants him to do.

  531. Moses is like,

  532. I can't speak.

  533. Are you sure I'm the right person?

  534. Moses gives every excuse in the book.

  535. But God says,

  536. nope, you're the man for the job.

  537. And God does great things

  538. through Moses.

  539. We also have,

  540. when I think about this,

  541. we need to have the heart and attitude

  542. like the prophet Isaiah

  543. from the Old Testament.

  544. Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6:5–8

  545. verses 5 through 8.

  546. Woe to me, I cried.

  547. This is Isaiah talking.

  548. I am ruined.

  549. For I am a man of unclean lips,

  550. and I live among a people of unclean lips.

  551. My eyes have seen the King,

  552. the Lord Almighty.

  553. Then one of the seraphim angels

  554. flew to me with a live coal in his hands,

  555. which he had taken

  556. with tongs from the altar.

  557. With it, he touched my mouth and said,

  558. see, this has touched your lips.

  559. Your guilt is taken away

  560. and your sin atoned for.

  561. And this verse really stands out to me,

  562. and I think it should stand out to us all.

  563. Then I heard a voice,

  564. the Lord,

  565. voice of the Lord saying,

  566. whom shall I send,

  567. and who will go for us?

  568. And I said, here I am, send me.

  569. This is the same concept

  570. that we read about

  571. in the book of Matthew

  572. that we talked about earlier.

  573. The harvest is plentiful,

  574. the workers are few.

  575. God is looking to send people out

  576. into the harvest field.

  577. God is looking to send people

  578. out to the nations.

  579. The question is,

  580. are we going to have

  581. an attitude say,

  582. I'm not good enough,

  583. or are we going to say,

  584. here I am, send me.

  585. I'm a willing person,

  586. I'm a willing spirit,

  587. ready to do the things

  588. that you have called me to do?

  589. Because in this moment,

  590. we start off with Isaiah saying,

  591. woe to me,

  592. I'm a man of unclean lips.

  593. And then he is purified, right?

  594. He is purified by God

  595. to then go do what

  596. God calls him to do.

  597. The same thing is true for us, right?

  598. Woe to us.

  599. We are sinful people.

  600. Like if it's not for the cross

  601. of Jesus Christ in his blood shed,

  602. it would be a poor day for us

  603. come eternity.

  604. But thankfully,

  605. Jesus has purified us

  606. through his blood.

  607. And so now we can hear

  608. this conversation that God is saying,

  609. whom shall I send?

  610. People need to hear.

  611. Who am I going to send out?

  612. And the question is,

  613. are we going to be like Isaiah

  614. signing up,

  615. here I am, send me.

  616. Send me wherever that is.

  617. That can be across the street.

  618. It can be across the globe.

  619. But all of us need to be willing

  620. to be the people to go

  621. where God has called us to go.

  622. He wants to set us apart

  623. just like Isaiah was set apart for him.

  624. And God can purify you.

  625. We all go through difficulties.

  626. We all have temptations.

  627. We all have sins in our life.

  628. The truth is God can purify you.

  629. You do not have to live in sin.

  630. You can be set free from the power

  631. of sin in your life

  632. through submission to Jesus

  633. and by receiving that blood

  634. that he gives you.

  635. It might not necessarily be overnight,

  636. but God can deliver you from that.

  637. You don't have to live

  638. in that guilt and shame of sin.

  639. You can live in the freedom

  640. that God desires for you to have

  641. going forward.

  642. Here I am, send me.

  643. And the truth is,

  644. there's a lot of people

  645. that need to hear about Christ.

  646. Globally, don't get us started.

  647. You can go talk to Greg Edmonds

  648. in the back.

  649. He'll get you going about that.

  650. Four in ten people around the globe

  651. don't know a Christian, I believe.

  652. Not that they aren't Christians.

  653. They don't know a Christian.

  654. That's a huge part of the world

  655. that doesn't even have access

  656. to the gospel.

  657. So we absolutely, hopefully,

  658. there are people in this room

  659. saying, here I am, send me,

  660. willing to go overseas

  661. to declare God's goodness to the globe.

  662. Right?

  663. Hopefully that's the case.

  664. But we all at least

  665. need to go across the street.

  666. We at least need to go

  667. across town to tell people.

  668. In our world, ten years ago,

  669. which isn't that long

  670. to old people like me,

  671. ten years ago, not that long ago,

  672. in our good old country,

  673. the US of A,

  674. 71% of people identified as Christians.

  675. Ten years ago.

  676. Today, that number is down

  677. from 71% to 62%.

  678. That's pretty low.

  679. 62% is not a high percentage.

  680. You just think about

  681. Chesney High School

  682. had their graduation.

  683. Let's say there was

  684. a thousand people

  685. that showed up to graduation,

  686. which was probably more than that,

  687. but for numbers' sake,

  688. a thousand people showed up

  689. to that graduation.

  690. 62%, that would mean

  691. 380 of those people

  692. would not profess to be Christians.

  693. That is a large group of people

  694. in our country

  695. that do not claim Christ,

  696. do not claim to follow Jesus.

  697. Right?

  698. That's a lot.

  699. Yeah, it's an F.

  700. That's an F.

  701. We're not doing great

  702. in terms of that.

  703. And the number is going down,

  704. not going up.

  705. We have a lot of work

  706. to do in that regard.

  707. And let's be honest,

  708. if 62% of people

  709. profess to be Christians,

  710. not everyone who says

  711. they follow Jesus

  712. is actually following Jesus.

  713. And so that number is lower

  714. than that statistic,

  715. I can say confidently.

  716. And we can look at,

  717. that's the country statistic,

  718. South Carolina,

  719. we're doing a little bit better.

  720. We're actually,

  721. in terms of percentage

  722. of Christians,

  723. the second highest state

  724. in terms of percentage

  725. of Christians,

  726. but it's still below 70%

  727. in our country.

  728. One reason why I always

  729. continue to work

  730. with school ministries

  731. to help teach the Bible

  732. through the middle school

  733. is because of this.

  734. So many people,

  735. there's hundreds of people

  736. in the middle school,

  737. about 200 sign up

  738. to be a part of

  739. school ministries.

  740. And so we get to teach them

  741. about who God is

  742. and we give a salvation

  743. message twice a year.

  744. Every year when people sign up

  745. to be a part of this program,

  746. one of the lines to sign up

  747. is what church are you part of?

  748. And there's a huge number

  749. of them who put

  750. no church affiliation,

  751. none.

  752. They put,

  753. I've been looking for a church

  754. but haven't found one.

  755. So many people right here

  756. in our backyard

  757. don't know Christ.

  758. And then every year,

  759. I'm never,

  760. the first couple of years

  761. I was surprised,

  762. but then it makes total sense.

  763. When we see people

  764. in release time

  765. give their life to the Lord,

  766. profess salvation,

  767. we try to follow up

  768. with the local churches,

  769. those pastors,

  770. we're like,

  771. hey, this kid got saved.

  772. You can disciple them in that.

  773. So many times,

  774. they have no church affiliation.

  775. The reason why they gave

  776. their life to the Lord

  777. is because they'd never heard

  778. the gospel before,

  779. right here in Chesney,

  780. South Carolina, right?

  781. And this statistic,

  782. these statistics we look at,

  783. there's such a need to say,

  784. here I am, send me.

  785. In Spartanburg County,

  786. there's 380,000 people

  787. in our county.

  788. This is talking about

  789. the work that we have

  790. to do as Christians.

  791. There's about 600 churches

  792. in Spartanburg County.

  793. That means to reach

  794. every person,

  795. to have every person

  796. regularly attending church,

  797. there would need to be

  798. over 600 people

  799. in every single church

  800. in Spartanburg County

  801. to reach everybody.

  802. There aren't that many churches

  803. with that many people.

  804. And if you look at the statistics

  805. for Chesney, South Carolina,

  806. it's the exact same.

  807. They're in the zip code

  808. 29323.

  809. There's about 16,000 people

  810. and there's about 20 to 25

  811. churches in Chesney.

  812. And so that would mean

  813. every church needs

  814. to have 600 plus people

  815. to reach everyone.

  816. We either need a lot more churches

  817. or we need a lot bigger churches

  818. because we need to reach people

  819. through salvation.

  820. We want everyone to be saved.

  821. And the reason why

  822. we want everyone to be saved

  823. is because God wants

  824. everyone to be saved.

  825. And so we need to have

  826. this attitude and mentality

  827. of here I am,

  828. send me,

  829. send me to the people

  830. at my work,

  831. send me to the people

  832. that my kids are playing

  833. ball with,

  834. send me to the people

  835. at the grocery store,

  836. whatever it is,

  837. send me with a heart

  838. and willingness to go

  839. and show people

  840. and tell people

  841. that Jesus is real,

  842. that he really died on the cross.

  843. And this is where

  844. Pentecost comes into play.

  845. Because again,

  846. I don't have enough

  847. skills and abilities.

  848. You don't have enough

  849. skills and abilities.

  850. That is why the Holy Spirit,

  851. he is so important

  852. in coming into your life

  853. and my life

  854. to give us the gifts

  855. and abilities to reach people.

  856. I'm going to read a couple

  857. more verses from

  858. Matthew chapter 10,

    Matthew 10:18–20

  859. verses 18 to 20.

  860. On my account,

  861. so these apostles

  862. that he's sending out,

  863. this is who he's talking to.

  864. On my account,

  865. you will be brought before

  866. governors and kings

  867. as witnesses to them

  868. and to the Gentiles.

  869. But when they arrest you,

  870. do not worry about

  871. what to say

  872. or how to say it.

  873. At that time,

  874. you will be given

  875. what to say

  876. for it will not be you speaking,

  877. but the spirit of your father

  878. speaking through you.

  879. You don't have all the answers?

  880. I don't have the answers.

  881. But the truth is,

  882. God will directly intervene

  883. through the Holy Spirit

  884. and these conversations

  885. that you have.

  886. If you are willing

  887. to humble yourself

  888. before going to have

  889. a conversation with someone,

  890. whatever it is,

  891. God will speak to you

  892. in that, right?

  893. He will give you the words

  894. that you need

  895. in that moment to share.

  896. And when we're talking

  897. about this,

  898. this doesn't mean,

  899. the here I am, send me,

  900. does not mean you ever

  901. have to preach a sermon.

  902. You don't.

  903. The vast majority of you

  904. will never preach a sermon

  905. and that's okay.

  906. You can still be part

  907. of the Great Commission.

  908. You can still be part of the

  909. here I am, send me.

  910. You can still be part

  911. of being a sent out one

  912. and apostle of Jesus

  913. because you're having

  914. conversations with people, right?

  915. That's what matters

  916. more than anything else.

  917. We don't need thousands

  918. of people in a room.

  919. We need thousands of people

  920. going out of a room

  921. to tell people about Christ.

  922. That is so much more important

  923. to have that.

  924. And again,

  925. God will give you the words.

  926. If you pause and pray,

  927. God will give you

  928. the words in that moment.

  929. I think about one time,

  930. this is before I was

  931. at Graham Chapel.

  932. I was preaching at a church

  933. and that morning,

  934. I was going over my notes

  935. for the last time

  936. and I felt God say,

  937. yeah, you're not going to preach

  938. that this morning.

  939. And I was like,

  940. this is the most

  941. nerve wracking thing

  942. I've ever had you tell me

  943. in my life.

  944. God, what do you mean I'm not

  945. going to preach the sermon

  946. I worked on?

  947. He said you're not.

  948. And so he just put

  949. a couple of verses on my mind

  950. and said,

  951. I want you to preach

  952. on this instead.

  953. And so in the next like

  954. 45 minutes getting ready

  955. for the sermon,

  956. I am like freaking out.

  957. I am terrified.

  958. I'm like, I'm going to end

  959. like after five minutes

  960. of talking,

  961. I'm going to say the dumbest things

  962. I've ever said in my life.

  963. And do I think it was

  964. the greatest sermon

  965. I've ever given?

  966. No, I don't.

  967. But after the service,

  968. someone came up to me

  969. and he said,

  970. I feel like you're preaching

  971. directly to me.

  972. And I didn't say it,

  973. but I was like,

  974. well, I probably was.

  975. The Lord gave me a message.

  976. I don't know if anyone else

  977. was impacted by it,

  978. but the Lord gave me

  979. the words in that moment

  980. for that person

  981. and what they needed to hear

  982. to encourage them

  983. and challenge them in their faith.

  984. That can happen in a sermon.

  985. It can happen in a conversation.

  986. I think about just

  987. Christine's grandma.

  988. One time we're talking on the phone

  989. and it was a difficult moment.

  990. Christine's grandma,

  991. she has a direct access

  992. to Holy Spirit.

  993. So if you ever need anything,

  994. talk to Christine,

  995. get her grandma's number.

  996. There's just a special

  997. connection there.

  998. And then Christine's grandma

  999. started praying for Christine

1000. and it was just like

  1001. the most encouraging thing

  1002. that's ever happened

1003. and how the Holy Spirit

  1004. just really built up

  1005. and encouraged Christine

  1006. in that moment.

  1007. And so be willing

  1008. just to allow God

  1009. to speak through you.

  1010. Right?

1011. You need to think about that.

  1012. And again,

1013. as we have these conversations

  1014. with people,

1015. they don't have to happen

  1016. in church

1017. and usually they're not going

  1018. to happen in church.

  1019. If you think about

  1020. the New Testament,

1021. a lot of the great stories

  1022. we read,

1023. a lot of the great miracles,

1024. a lot of the great teachings,

1025. guess where they don't usually

  1026. happen?

  1027. In church.

  1028. In the synagogues.

  1029. Some of them do,

1030. but a lot of the good stories

  1031. aren't actually happening

  1032. in the religious location,

  1033. in the religious building.

1034. It is out in the community.

1035. The Sermon on the Mount.

1036. It was on a mountain,

1037. not in a church building.

1038. And so God can and wants

  1039. to use us

  1040. to have conversations

  1041. with people

  1042. everywhere we go.

1043. So Jesus at some point,

1044. when he first has his disciples,

1045. he says, come and see.

1046. He invites them into his life,

  1047. because ministry is more

1048. than just words or programs.

  1049. Jesus invites the disciples

  1050. into his life,

  1051. come and see,

1052. and then he switches from

1053. come and see to go,

  1054. like go and tell.

  1055. It becomes this thing

1056. where Jesus sends them out

1057. and that should be something

  1058. that takes place

1059. in all of our lives.

1060. And we can be confident

  1061. that we can accomplish

  1062. Jesus' mission

1063. because of the Holy Spirit.

1064. So I want to read

  1065. a little bit about

  1066. the Day of Pentecost

  1067. all those years ago,

  1068. 1,993 years ago

  1069. to the day probably.

  1070. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:1–4

  1071. verses 1 to 4.

1072. When the Day of Pentecost

  1073. came,

  1074. they were all together

  1075. in one place.

1076. a sound like the blowing

  1077. of a violent wind

  1078. came from heaven

1079. and filled the whole house

  1080. where they were sitting.

  1081. They saw what seemed

1082. to be tongues of fire

  1083. that separated and came

1084. to rest on each of them.

1085. All of them were filled

  1086. with the Holy Spirit

  1087. and began to speak

  1088. in other tongues

1089. as the Spirit enabled them.

  1090. Right away,

  1091. they receive the Spirit

  1092. and start speaking

1093. the Gospel to people in need.

  1094. Right away,

1095. God gives them the ability

  1096. to do that.

  1097. They immediately start

  1098. preaching the Gospel.

1099. The Holy Spirit is the third

1100. powerful person of the Trinity

1101. and the Holy Spirit comes

  1102. to transform us

  1103. and change us

  1104. to accomplish the work

  1105. that Jesus gives us.

1106. So in youth ministry world,

  1107. dealing with so many

  1108. youth over the years,

  1109. sometimes I feel like

  1110. we mislead people about

1111. who the Holy Spirit is,

  1112. what the Holy Spirit

  1113. accomplishes.

1114. I think about, you know,

1115. we just mentioned youth camps

  1116. coming up.

1117. Youth camp is my favorite

  1118. week of the year.

1119. It's the most fun week

  1120. of the year.

  1121. It's the most spiritually

1122. rewarding week of the year.

  1123. But sometimes the way

  1124. we talk about it,

1125. it's like the Holy Spirit

1126. only shows up at youth camp.

  1127. And that's not true.

  1128. But there are times

  1129. when we're in services

  1130. whether it could be

  1131. a Sunday morning service,

1132. it could be a camp service,

  1133. a youth convention,

  1134. whatever it is,

  1135. these powerful services,

  1136. and we think,

  1137. oh, the Holy Spirit

1138. showed up in the moment.

  1139. Which is true,

  1140. but the main purpose

  1141. of the Holy Spirit

1142. is not to show up in a moment.

  1143. The main purpose

  1144. of the Holy Spirit

1145. is to show up in our lives

1146. and equip us to go, right?

1147. I think about three years ago,

  1148. there was a revival

  1149. at Asbury University.

  1150. It started off

1151. as a simple worship service.

1152. They had chapel that day.

  1153. The speaker came up,

  1154. the speaker preached.

  1155. I find this funny.

1156. The preacher left the stage,

  1157. immediately called his wife

  1158. and said,

1159. that's one of the worst sermons

1160. I've ever preached in my life.

  1161. He's like,

1162. I did not do good in that.

1163. But the service didn't end

  1164. for two weeks.

1165. The service continued to go.

1166. Worship team continued to play.

  1167. Other people started coming.

  1168. God did something

  1169. in that moment

  1170. at Asbury University

  1171. in which one simple

  1172. chapel worship service

1173. turned into an over two week event

  1174. in which case

1175. people continue to see and sense

1176. and feel the Holy Spirit.

1177. And so it's referred to

  1178. as the Asbury Revival.

1179. I want to challenge us though

1180. in the way we think about revival.

1181. Revival is not just getting people,

1182. a lot of people in a room

  1183. for a moment.

  1184. True revival takes place

  1185. not when we gather,

1186. but when we go, right?

1187. That's the more important part

  1188. of what happens

  1189. because we can get

1190. a lot of people in a room.

  1191. I mean,

1192. anyone ever been to a Coldplay concert

  1193. and felt chills

  1194. at a Coldplay concert?

1195. Anyone ever been to Death Valley

  1196. or to Williams Bryce

1197. and you felt like this emotion

  1198. stirring within you

  1199. at a sporting event?

1200. We can feel these things

  1201. at non-spiritual events.

1202. And so the goal isn't

  1203. this emotional connection

  1204. to the Holy Spirit

1205. because who knows what it could be.

1206. It could be something you ate for lunch.

  1207. But the true thing

1208. is when God comes into us

  1209. and transforms us.

1210. And yes, that will absolutely

  1211. be an emotional response

1212. that we have to God, right?

  1213. We will absolutely have

1214. this emotional response to God.

1215. But that's not the goal.

1216. The goal is a transformed life.

1217. The goal is to be holy.

1218. The goal is to become sent out ones

1219. to go and tell people

  1220. about who Jesus is

1221. and all that he has done.

  1222. Acts 2, verses 40-41.

    Acts 2:40–41

  1223. With many other words,

  1224. he warned them

1225. and he pleaded with them.

  1226. This is Peter talking.

  1227. Peter gives the sermon.

1228. So Peter is warning them,

  1229. save yourself

  1230. from this corrupt generation.

1231. Those who accepted his message

  1232. were baptized

1233. and about 3,000 were added

1234. to their number that day.

1235. And this is why Pentecost is looked at

1236. as the birthday of the church.

1237. At the beginning of that day,

  1238. there were 120 people

  1239. still following Jesus.

  1240. Despite all the miracles,

  1241. despite all the teachings,

1242. despite all those wonderful things

1243. we read in the gospel,

  1244. only 120 people

  1245. were still following Jesus.

  1246. Then after this day,

  1247. over 3,000 people

  1248. were following Jesus.

  1249. And it says 3,000

1250. were added to the number that day.

1251. You can look at the book of Acts.

1252. A regular thing that happens

1253. from this moment forward is,

1254. and their number was added to daily.

  1255. Pentecost wasn't important

1256. just because it was a day.

  1257. Pentecost was important

1258. is because it impacted lives

  1259. daily going forward.

  1260. Each day,

  1261. people were encountering God.

  1262. Each day,

1263. new people were getting saved.

  1264. It wasn't just a moment,

1265. but it became a lifestyle

1266. and a way of going forward, right?

  1267. Pentecost was not significant

1268. because of how long the service was.

  1269. Pentecost was not significant

1270. because of how many people gathered.

  1271. Pentecost is significant

1272. because the Holy Spirit came

  1273. and the disciples went

  1274. from sitting and listening

  1275. to becoming apostles

1276. who were willing to go.

1277. I'm going to ask Hailey

1278. to come back up in a second.

1279. One thing that I want to do

1280. anytime, like thinking about this,

1281. Pentecost, the Holy Spirit coming,

1282. two things that I want to say about that

  1283. as we get ready

1284. to wrap up here in a second.

1285. One, when Jesus sends them out,

1286. He does not send them out alone.

  1287. Because in our faith,

1288. the goal is never to be alone.

1289. The goal is always to be

  1290. with other believers.

1291. And so Jesus sent them out

  1292. in groups of two.

1293. And so church is not,

1294. it's not the solo act

  1295. where you go out

1296. to do all these things on your own

1297. because it's all for Jesus anyway.

1298. And so it is super important

1299. for us to build camaraderie,

  1300. fellowship, trust,

  1301. love for one another

  1302. here at church.

1303. And so that throughout the week,

  1304. as we are going

  1305. and sharing the gospel,

1306. as we are going out

  1307. on mission as apostles,

  1308. then you have brothers

  1309. and sisters in Christ

  1310. who are encouraging you

1311. to remind you of the good things

1312. that God is doing in your life

  1313. and through you,

1314. as well as to challenge you,

1315. hey, who are you reaching out to this week?

1316. Who are you ministering to this week?

1317. Who are you talking to this week

1318. about Jesus and His love?

1319. We need that in our life.

1320. The other thing that we really need

1321. is a focus on prayer.

1322. So when you just look at Pentecost,

  1323. Jesus dies.

  1324. Jesus three days later

  1325. rises from the dead.

  1326. And for 40 days,

  1327. Jesus went around showing

  1328. that He is risen,

  1329. teaching people, encouraging people.

  1330. But then He ascended.

  1331. Right?

1332. So He ascends into Heaven.

  1333. Pentecost doesn't happen

1334. for another 10 days after that.

  1335. I 100% believe one reason

1336. why Pentecost was so significant

  1337. in any great movement

  1338. that ever has happened

1339. and ever will happen in our faith

1340. is going to happen because of prayer.

  1341. Those 120 people

  1342. were gathered together

1343. and praying for 10 days.

1344. How often do we do that?

1345. How often do we pray for five minutes?

1346. And I'm including myself in this week.

1347. I do not pray near as much as I should.

1348. Like, the fact that I work here

1349. and don't come to the altar

1350. during the week as much as I do,

1351. it's shame on me for that.

  1352. But in Christianity,

1353. so often we look to do the things,

1354. but before we ever do,

  1355. we need to pray.

1356. And so I'm going to have a moment.

1357. Haley is just going to strum on the guitar

1358. for, and I don't know how long.

  1359. Probably not 10 days.

  1360. I don't anticipate being here for 10 days.

  1361. Maybe 10 seconds, maybe a minute,

  1362. maybe three minutes.

  1363. Who knows how long?

1364. But I just want to have a time

1365. where we all just humble ourselves

1366. before God and just ask him

1367. to purify us like he did Isaiah

1368. and to have a moment

1369. where you get in your heart ready

1370. in whatever way you need to,

1371. whether that's in your seat,

1372. just saying, God, here I am, send me,

1373. or you want to come to an altar

1374. and pray and seek God, whatever it is.

1375. But I just want to have

1376. an extended moment of prayer

1377. where we're all just pausing

1378. and praying and asking for God

1379. to do a great and mighty thing

  1380. on Pentecost today

1381. like he did all those years ago.

1382. And again, the goal is not just a moment

1383. of God doing something good,

  1384. but transforming our lives

1385. so that we can go and do the good things

1386. that he's called us to.

1387. So just take a moment,

  1388. whatever's comfortable posture

1389. for you to pray is,

1390. or maybe you need an uncomfortable posture

1391. to pray, whatever it is,

  1392. take a moment,

1393. and then after a time,

1394. I'll wrap us up in prayer.

  1395. . . .

  1396. . . .

  1397. . . .

  1398. . .

  1399. . .

  1400. . .

  1401. . .

  1402. . .

  1403. . .

  1404. . .

1405. God, I pray that we can truly just know You in this moment, that we can know Your goodness,

1406. we can know Your love, we can know Your Word. God, we can know that You are for us.

1407. God, we know that we have fallen short so many times in life, whether that's yesterday, today,

1408. a week ago. God, we sin and we often live in rebellion against You, yet You love us so deeply

1409. and purely. God, that when we come to You to confess our sins, You say our sins are as far as

1410. east is from the west. You do not desire to hold that over us, but You desire to free us from that.

1411. And so I pray that every single person in this room right now will truly grasp and know the

1412. love that You have for them, Jesus. That they will truly know that they are forgiven before You

1413. when we simply come and confess. God, that we can live free of shame and guilt. We can live in

1414. freedom and power of the Holy Spirit. And I pray that for each and every person in here right now

1415. that they can know that, not just in their head, but in their heart. God, it's easy to know things

1416. that You have said. It's easy to know generally how You feel about people. But God, I pray that

1417. in the very essence of who we are, we can know that we are deeply loved and cared for by You.

1418. God, that we can know that You willingly went to the cross to die for us. But God, You continue

1419. to love us today. It's not an act that You did 2,000 years ago, but You continue to love us

1420. and build us up, encourage us, power us, to give us all that we need, to give us breath in our lungs.

1421. I pray that we can all know that. And Jesus, I pray that in this moment that You will place

1422. specific people on our hearts and minds, specific people to have a conversation with,

1423. to call on the phone. And God, maybe that needs to lead to a gospel conversation about who You are

1424. and what You've done. Maybe it needs just to be an encouraging word of the difference and impact

1425. You've made through that person. Whatever it is, God, because God, sometimes we just need to show

1426. people that they are loved before we remind them of who You are. And so place someone on each

1427. person's heart and mind this week that we can share with. God, we want to be a church that

1428. doesn't just come and consume the word of God. God, we want that. I pray for myself and every

1429. person in here that we will know more about You next year than we do this year. But God,

1430. I pray that we will also be a people that are taking Your word, taking the life that You

1431. give us through the Bible and help us to work that out. Help us to do the things that You've

1432. called us to do. Help us to love our enemies. Help us to share the gospel. Help us to be

1433. compassionate like You are compassionate. Help us to be a servant like You were a servant.

1434. God, help us to do the things that You've called us to do. God, help us to do with

1435. the heart of Christ. The more and more we live out Your teachings in the world,

1436. people will notice and see that we are different. And I pray that we can be ready

1437. and willing to share why we are different. So Holy Spirit, we ask that You'll continue

1438. to come. God, we pray that You'll continue to do a great thing right now. God, whatever

1439. that means, whatever that looks like, we ask for You to do a great thing right now.

1440. But God, help us to be a church that is ready to be sent out on mission for Jesus,

1441. that we are sent out to help redeem the lost. We are ready to go out and see the dark,

1442. find the light. God, that we can go and be the light that You have called us to be

1443. by being connected to You. And so we come and humble ourselves before You

1444. in our seats, at the altar, wherever it is, God, we just want to humble ourselves before You.

1445. And God, we ask that You will build us up into the beautiful church that You have called us to be.

1446. And so God, as we go, as we leave this building, may this not be the end of a service,

1447. but may it be the beginning of a lifelong service to You.

1448. We give You the rest of this day, we give You the rest of our lives, Jesus.

1449. We pray this in Your name. Amen.
