  1. Oh my goodness, I had goosebumps.

  2. I had to hold back 'cause I was like, if I let it all out now,

  3. I'm not going to be able to talk.

  4. So let me ask you, have you ever witnessed someone worship,

  5. worship Jesus in a way that made you feel uncomfortable?

  6. Not because they were showy, because it, it stirred something

  7. up in you. Maybe you watch somebody give to

  8. the church and they, they were giving extravagantly and you're

  9. like, I don't know, man. Or maybe you heard somebody say

  10. a prayer. That was an absolute confidence

  11. that God is going to provide and be there in their life.

  12. And you're like, man, that seems a little bit naive.

  13. Or maybe, or maybe you've seen somebody take a radical change

  14. in their life to follow Jesus. And you're looking at it like

  15. you'd kind of gone a little bit too far.

  16. And you've convinced yourself, you convince yourself that your

  17. response is the mature one. It's the responsible one, it's

  18. the wise one. But what if it's not wisdom?

  19. What if it's something else entirely?

  20. I'll never forget when my wife came up to me and she was

  21. excited. She was being presented with a

  22. ministry opportunity and she had a chance to start a homeschool

  23. Group, A Christian homeschool group in Korea and, and in

  24. China. And this is a chance for her to

  25. impact lives, a chance for her to step into something bigger.

  26. And my first words to her were not, I'm so proud of you.

  27. They were not, wow, What? What is God doing in our lives

  28. that we could go on this journey?

  29. No, my first response was, have you really thought about how

  30. much time this is going to take? You know, our, our, our kids

  31. schedule. Our schedules are pretty busy.

  32. Are you ready for this, this kind of commitment, this kind of

  33. responsibility? Immediately I shut down the joy

  34. before it could even start to grow roots or take something

  35. simpler. She loves to bake cakes.

  36. She will bake a cake. She will create a beautiful,

  37. elaborate cake for a birthday, for a celebration.

  38. And every single time I look at that cake and I can't hold my

  39. mouth and I say, honey, you know, Costco's right down the

  40. street, $30 sheet cake. We could have this handled.

  41. She's pouring out love, creativity, celebrating, and I'm

  42. over here calculating, 'cause I don't see the glass half full, I

  43. see it half empty. And if I'm being brutally honest

  44. with you, it's empty because it's cracked, it's leaking.

  45. I don't leave room for God, I don't leave room for the joy He

  46. brings. I don't leave room for

  47. extravagant worship. And I'm realizing I don't have a

  48. practical problem, I have a cynicism problem.

  49. And when I see somebody wasting money, wasting resources,

  50. wasting time on Jesus, their carefully planned out lives, my

  51. first reaction isn't, wow, look at them worship God, it's

  52. criticism. I'm realizing I'm not the wise

  53. one in the room. I'm the cynic that gets in the

  54. way of the Lord. In John chapter 12, we're going

    John 12 chapter mention

  55. to witness a dinner party, and at the dinner party there's

  56. going to be 3 different types of people's responses, how they

  57. respond to Jesus, and they're going to be completely

  58. different. One will be 1 worships

  59. extravagantly. The next will be one group

  60. watches skeptically and lastly, 1 criticizes harshly and Jesus

  61. reveals that the response, the responses that they are showing,

  62. it's really it's really about their hearts.

  63. That's our big idea for today. Your worship reveals what you

  64. truly treasure. Your worship, the things you

  65. worship. It truly shows what you

  66. treasure. And the question I'm going to

  67. ask now and I want you to think about this and we're going to

  68. get to this at the end. Are you more like Mary?

  69. Are you more like the disciples or are you more like Judas?

  70. So if you ever Bibles turn with me to John chapter 12, we're

    John 12 chapter mention

  71. going to start in verse one. If you don't have your Bible, so

  72. it's OK, we're going to have on the screen.

  73. But some quick context. So what's happening, what we've

  74. been reading through for the last month or so is Jesus had

  75. just raised his best friend Lazarus from the dead, not

  76. freshly did not. Maybe he's kind of sleeping.

  77. Not like we could probably do CPR and get this guy back.

  78. This guy's gone. He's been dead for four days,

  79. body decomposing. This wasn't just another

  80. healing. This was a resurrection, an

  81. undeniable unstoppable proof that Jesus is and has power over

  82. death. This is 6 days before Jesus will

  83. be betrayed, arrested, beaten, taken, nailed to the cross as a

  84. perfect man willingly going to be a sacrifice for us.

  85. John chapter 12, verse one. Six days before the Passover,

    John 12 chapter mention

  86. Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was the one Jesus had

  87. raised from the dead. So they gave him a dinner for

  88. him. There Martha was serving them

  89. and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him.

  90. Then Mary took a pound of pure a perfume pure and expensive.

  91. Nard anointed Jesus's feet and wiped his feet with her hair.

  92. So the house was filled filled with the fragrance of the

  93. perfume. Then one of his disciples, Judas

  94. Iscariot said the one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot who

  95. was about to portray him said why wasn't this perfume sold for

  96. 300 Denari verse 7 Jesus answered, leave her alone.

  97. She has kept it for the day of my burial.

  98. For you will always have the poor with you, but you do not

  99. always have me. The table is set.

  100. Lazarus is there once wrapped up and clothed grave clothes.

  101. Now he's just sitting there enjoying the house.

  102. It's filled with people, it's exciting, it's loud, enjoying

  103. dinner like nothing ever happened.

  104. Martha's in the kitchen doing what Martha does best.

  105. She's serving, serving Jesus now.

  106. Now she understands what she's serving.

  107. For the disciples, they're there too, probably still whispering

  108. about what happened and why there's a dead guy in the room.

  109. In the culture, when you went to dinner with them, they would put

  110. a few drops of cheap perfume on your head and guests would have

  111. their feet washed. But Mary, she doesn't do that.

  112. In fact, she does the complete opposite.

  113. She takes the most expensive perfume a year, a year's worth

  114. of wages, 70 to $100,000. In this bottle.

  115. They see Mary take it out. All eyes are on her now.

  116. They know that this could have been a family treasure, her

  117. savings account, maybe even her life investment.

  118. And she does the unthinkable. She pours every last drop out.

  119. Then, in complete surrender, she undos her hair, let's it down

  120. and starts to wipe Jesus with her hair.

  121. The entire house goes silent. Everyone knows Mary just gave

  122. everything she had. She surrendered.

  123. She let it all out. Now watch these three responses.

  124. Response #1 Mary's extravagant worship.

  125. Mary's worship reveals a heart that treasures Jesus.

  126. Why, Mary? Why?

  127. Why would you pour out an entire year's salary in one moment?

  128. Here's what Mary understood. Jesus is worth everything.

  129. He's worth everything. Mary had just watched Jesus

  130. raise her brother from the dead. Jesus calling out Lazarus, come

  131. out, come out alive. And Mary's looking at this jar

  132. of perfume and sees, sees this jar and say this is an

  133. investment. This isn't a security.

  134. This is something I can give to the one person, the one person

  135. who actually made a difference in my life, brought my brother

  136. back from the dead. She didn't hesitate.

  137. She didn't calculate. She broke it open and poured out

  138. everything. Because when you truly, when you

  139. truly treasure Jesus, extravagant worship isn't

  140. wasteful. It's the only reasonable

  141. response. But notices Mary, she's not the

  142. only one in that room. The disciples, the disciples

  143. cynical caution because of the disciples faith reveals that

  144. their hearts are for safety and they're cynical.

  145. Look back at verse 4. It says one of his disciples,

  146. Judas, spoke up with criticism. But if you look at the other

  147. accounts, if you look at Matthew, if you look at Mark, it

  148. says this. When the disciples saw this,

  149. they were indignant. Why this waste?

  150. It wasn't just Judas. It was the disciples in the

  151. room, the inner circle, the ones who've been following Jesus for

  152. years, the ones who had seen him do miracles.

  153. They watched Mary pour out everything.

  154. They wondered why. Why this waste?

  155. The disciples were not like Judas.

  156. They weren't evil. But they were skeptical.

  157. They were cynical, they were calculating.

  158. They agreed this could have been sold for something more given to

  159. the poor. And on the surface that sounds

  160. noble. But what really is revealed is

  161. they didn't believe Jesus was worth that much.

  162. They'd follow Jesus, They'd serve Jesus.

  163. They even left their jobs to be with Jesus.

  164. But pour out everything. Come on now, let's not get

  165. carried away. And if I'm being real, if I'm

  166. being honest with you, I'm just like those disciples.

  167. When somebody gets an opportunity, a ministry

  168. opportunity, I don't say that's pointless.

  169. No, I say, have we really thought this through?

  170. I am not hostile to worship. I love worship, but I'm

  171. cautious. I'm skeptical.

  172. I'm practical. When I see somebody worship me

  173. in a way that I don't worship, my views start to change on

  174. them. And Jesus calls that cynicism,

  175. cynicism, Show, show. Cynicism shows up when you've

  176. seen Jesus do incredible things. But you hold back.

  177. You hold back your worship and your trust.

  178. You leave no space for him to work wonders in your life.

  179. The disciples, they've seen Jesus turn water into wine, feed

  180. the 5000, heal the blind, walk on water, raise the dead.

  181. And they still wonder. They still question, Mary, are

  182. you worshipping Jesus too much? Have you gone overboard?

  183. Because here's the thing about cynicism.

  184. It always assumes the worst. When I see the glass half empty,

  185. I'm not being realistic. I'm refusing to believe God will

  186. fill it up. When I kill my wife's joy.

  187. I'm not being wise. I'm refusing to God that God

  188. actually has a calling in her life in that area.

  189. When I'm calculating worship, I'm not being responsible.

  190. I'm refusing to believe Jesus is worth it.

  191. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it's really just unbelief

  192. with a spreadsheet. And here's what terrifies me.

  193. The disciples are in that room. They're in there with Jesus.

  194. They're watching. They're watching this beautiful

  195. act, they can smell, they're experiencing it, and yet they

  196. still miss it because they're cynical enough to critique it.

  197. And some of you, like me or like the disciples not far from

  198. Jesus, you're in the room, you're in church, you're

  199. serving, You know the answers. But when someone else worships

  200. extravagantly, they give sacrificially, they trust

  201. recklessly, they pray expectantly.

  202. Your first thought isn't I want to be like that person.

  203. No, it's I'm not sure if that's wise.

  204. I'm not sure if that's responsible.

  205. I think that might, might be too much because I'm the mature one.

  206. But Jesus is about to show us that cynicism isn't maturity.

  207. It's a prison, a prison that keeps you from experiencing the

  208. fullness of God, what God wants to do in your life.

  209. Response #3 Judas Judas calculated criticism.

  210. Judas criticism reveals a heart that treasures something other

  211. than Jesus. It's treasuring money.

  212. Mary is on her knees worshiping. Everyone is in there witnessing

  213. this costly worship and the one person that can't keep his mouth

  214. shut is Judas. Verse four.

  215. He says this. Then one of the his disciples,

  216. Judas Iscariot, was about to betray him and he said why

  217. wasn't this perfume sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor

  218. six. He didn't say this because he

  219. cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.

  220. He was in charge of the money bag and when still part of it,

  221. what was put into it? The disciples, they questioned

  222. this worship, but Judas condemned this worship.

  223. He didn't think this was just wasteful, wasteful.

  224. He was angry about it. John opens up the curtain of his

  225. heart because he didn't care about the poor.

  226. He was a thief. Judas had been around Jesus for

  227. three years, seen every miracle, heard every sermon, sat with

  228. dinner after dinner, getting the teachings strictly from Jesus

  229. himself. He had Jesus, he had all of him.

  230. He had it all and he missed it all because his heart, his heart

  231. treasured more morning. His heart treasured money more

  232. than the Messiah. Judas had everything.

  233. He'd seen the the sick being healed, the storms being called,

  234. raised from the dead, heard every sermon.

  235. He'd be in the front row of the miracles of the Son of God.

  236. But when he looked at Jesus, he saw a means to an end.

  237. He saw a way to fund his agenda, a resource to manage your

  238. worship. Your worship reveals what you

  239. truly treasure. He never saw Jesus as a

  240. treasure. He saw Jesus as a tool.

  241. Verse 7 Jesus answered, leave her alone, she has kept it for

  242. the day of my burial. For you always have the poor

  243. with you, but you do not always have me.

  244. Jesus is not saying don't care for the poor, Actually he tells

  245. us He commands us to take care of the poor.

  246. But the hard truth is, what you criticize in others often

  247. reveals what you treasure in secrets.

  248. What you criticize in others often reveals what you treasure

  249. in secret. It's not a secret anymore.

  250. Some of you were thinking, this doesn't make sense.

  251. You're asking me to worship. You're asking me to do something

  252. that sounds irresponsible. And if you think about it

  253. practically, Judas wasn't wrong. That was a lot of money.

  254. But here's what he missed. This isn't about perfume.

  255. This is about the person. Three people groups in that

  256. room. 3 responses to Judas, to Jesus.

  257. Excuse me. Mary is our model.

  258. She's our model. This is the hearts we're aiming

  259. for. The disciples are the mirror.

  260. And if we're honest, this is where most of us are.

  261. We love Jesus, but we calculate. We follow Jesus, but we hold

  262. back. Judas is the warning.

  263. This is where cynicism leads. If we never surrender close to

  264. Jesus but miss him entirely. I asked you to think about that.

  265. Which one are you? Because I've realized I've spent

  266. most of my Christian life as a disciple in that room.

  267. Not hostile to Jesus, but not worshipping him in full

  268. surrender. Not betraying him, but not

  269. pouring out everything I have. I'm the guy who serves Jesus,

  270. but practicality is my first key.

  271. I'm the guy who worship worships Jesus, but only to the point to

  272. the That makes sense to me. If you're worshipping in a way

  273. that I don't know, I don't experience, I don't understand,

  274. it might not be the right way. The truth is, we all spend

  275. extravagantly on what we love, $200 concert tickets?

  276. Worth it. Driving 6 hours to go meet

  277. somebody that you think you might like?

  278. That's love staying up all night to finish your kids science

  279. board because you love them. That's the only reason I'm not

  280. calling Mary's worship over the top.

  281. Jesus just brought back her brother from the dead, so

  282. pouring out everything she had perfectly natural the most

  283. reasonable response to a resurrection is extravagant

  284. worship. What I'm saying is, my

  285. calculations often don't account for who Jesus is and what Jesus

  286. has actually done in my life. I'm over here doing math, trying

  287. to figure it out, but I'm not including the most important

  288. variable, Jesus himself. That's not wisdom, that's

  289. cynicism. Religion calculates, but

  290. relationships, Relationships pours out.

  291. Everything that you have. The disciples they're doing in

  292. religion. Mary, Mary is in a relationship.

  293. And Judas, I need you to hear this.

  294. You can be around Jesus and still miss him.

  295. You can attend church every week, you can serve on teams,

  296. you can know all the answers. You can do all the right things,

  297. but you can still treasure something greater than Jesus.

  298. And maybe Jesus isn't your treasure.

  299. You go to church. You go to church on Sunday

  300. because it's expected of you, You, your family.

  301. This is what your family does. This is a family legacy.

  302. This is a religious check box. I have to do this on Sunday.

  303. Or maybe you're hoping that Jesus will improve your life,

  304. give you peace, fix your problems, bless your plans.

  305. But what if? But what if he's not?

  306. He's not asking just to be your helper.

  307. What if he's calling? He's calling you to surrender

  308. your life to Him, to make him your greatest treasure.

  309. I asked this, 'cause maybe you're in the room right now,

  310. but and maybe you missed him. Three years Judas was with Jesus

  311. and he missed it. I bet you don't let that be your

  312. story. Understand what Mary understood.

  313. Her brother was dead and Jesus made him alive.

  314. That's why she didn't hesitate. That's why she poured out

  315. everything. That's why the cost was not too

  316. high. When you've seen someone you

  317. love be brought back from physical or spiritual death, you

  318. don't stop and ask, is this too much worship?

  319. You ask, what can I possibly do to worship the one thing that

  320. made such a difference in my life?

  321. And here's what Mary understood. And some of us are missing.

  322. This just isn't Lazarus's story. This is our story too.

  323. Listen to how the Paul, the apostle Paul describes every

  324. single one of us before Jesus. Ephesians chapter 2, verse 2

    Ephesians 2:2

  325. says, And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which

  326. you previously walked, according to the ways of this world,

  327. according to the ruler of the power of the air, the Spirit now

  328. working in the disobedient. We too all previously lived

  329. among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the

  330. inclinations of our flesh and our thoughts, and we were by

  331. nature children under wrath, as the others were also dead in

  332. sin, chained to the world, living just like everyone else.

  333. That was me, That is some of you.

  334. Verse 4, The 2 greatest words. But God.

  335. But God, who is rich in mercy because of His great love that

  336. He has for us, for you, for me, made us alive with Christ, even

  337. though we were dead in trespasses.

  338. You, me, we are saved by grace. You can't save yourselves.

  339. Jesus lived a perfect life, the life you can't live.

  340. He died the death that you deserved, and he rose to offer

  341. forgiveness and eternal life. That's why Mary worshipped

  342. extravagantly. She understood I was dead and he

  343. made me alive. If that's true, if Jesus has

  344. saved you from death, then what's too much to give him?

  345. The question I have to ask, I have to ask.

  346. It always is. Has Jesus made you alive?

  347. Or are you still dead in this room hearing about Jesus,

  348. watching others worship, but you've never actually

  349. surrendered to him? Don't be like Judas.

  350. Don't miss him when you're this close.

  351. Romans 10/9 says if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is

  352. Lord and you believe in your heart that God racing from the

  353. dead, you will be saved. It simply says, if you admit

  354. that Jesus, I am a Sinner, I cannot save myself, I believe

  355. you. I believe that Jesus died and

  356. rose again and I surrender Jesus be my Lord.

  357. If that's your heart right now, I suggest I urge you to

  358. surrender your life to Jesus. I'm going to give you a chance.

  359. Maybe that's something you want to do right now.

  360. If we all could bow our heads, if you're willing to ask for

  361. forgiveness and for salvation, pray this to God.

  362. Jesus, I know, I know. I'm a Sinner.

  363. I cannot save myself. I want you to save me.

  364. I want you to adopt me into your family.

  365. I surrender everything to you. I receive your promise of

  366. forgiveness, your promise of adoption, your promise of

  367. eternal life. Jesus be my Lord, with no one

  368. looking around. If you prayed that for the very

  369. first time would you be brave and raise your hand for me to

  370. see I see your hand. Anybody else?

  371. You can put your hands down in Jesus name, Amen.

  372. If you raise your hand, and I have seen raise hands in this

  373. room, welcome to the family of God.

  374. There are tables in the back of our sanctuary that have signs

  375. that say I raised my hand at those tables.

  376. There's people that they want to celebrate with you.

  377. They want to give you a Bible. They want to talk about what it

  378. looks like in their lives for them to surrender and what it

  379. looks like for you to give it all to Jesus.

  380. For those who've already known Jesus, if Jesus is truly your

  381. greatest treasure, then what does your worship look like?

  382. It's easy to sing on Sunday, but it's hard to live out on Monday.

  383. This week I'm challenging you. I'm going to ask you.

  384. I'm asking myself the hard question.

  385. What's the one thing? What's the one thing in your

  386. life that you won't give to Jesus?

  387. Identify your hold back. Your hold back is a thing that

  388. that you hesitate to surrender because it feels too costly,

  389. feels too risky, feels too important, too important.

  390. Tim Keller calls us the idols of our hearts, the things, the

  391. treasures that we're unwilling to give to God, that we can't

  392. give up. It could be your time, could be

  393. your money, could be your passions, could be your

  394. reputation. This week, I urge you to talk to

  395. God. Have Him reveal that in your

  396. life. Write it down.

  397. The thing I'm holding back from Jesus is this #2 take one step

  398. of extravagant worship. Don't just pray, Do something.

  399. This week. If it's time, sign up to serve.

  400. We have a lot of things happening right now.

  401. If it's money, set up your tithe.

  402. If it's your reputation, share Jesus with somebody this week.

  403. Break open your bottle and pour all you have out be.

  404. Here's what I'm learning. The only thing more costly than

  405. extravagant worship is withholding worship and missing

  406. out. What God wants to do in my life

  407. #3 the last thing is pray a dangerous prayer.

  408. Pray, Jesus. I have been treating this thing

  409. as more valuable than you. I've been cynical instead of

  410. expectant. I've been calculating instead of

  411. trusting. Jesus, I repent.

  412. I want to change my wise, my ways.

  413. I want to look to you. I don't want to run from my

  414. past. Show me what it looks like to be

  415. obedient and give me the courage to obey.

  416. Here is the key, you and I, we can't do this on our own.

  417. This isn't about our willpower. This is about the Holy Spirit

  418. transforming hearts, turning a disciple's heart that calculates

  419. into a merry heart that pours out everything.

  420. Ask him. Ask him to replace your cynicism

  421. with expectancy, your skepticism with trust, your caution with

  422. courage. I invite the prayer team to come

  423. out right now during our closing song.

  424. I encourage you to come and pray with them.

  425. Pray about anything. Maybe you've recognized that God

  426. is calling you to give him something.

  427. Come pray about that. If you all could stand right

  428. now, we're going to sing our last song together.

  429. As you stand, as the call, as the Lord calls you, as the

  430. Lord's asking you to move. Let him meet you.

  431. Let him transform your hearts.
