  1. Good morning, greetings to each of you. In the name

  2. of Jesus. It's good to be with you for an

  3. introduction to the message the topic this morning and ask

  4. you a few questions to consider, not to answer, but

  5. to think about. Are you happy? That's right? Are you

  6. a happy person? I looked around this morning a little

  7. bit and thought about that question. Are you happy with

  8. your life? Are you happy with the place that God

  9. has you to be? Are you happy with your job?

  10. Are you happy with your family? Are you happy with

  11. your marriage? You happy with your church? Be happy with

  12. your single life? Another question? As a Christian? Does it

  13. even matter if we're happy? We teach and rightly so.

  14. A big part of the gospel following Christ is a

  15. life of self denial, is a life of cross bearing,

  16. is a narrow way. So maybe for the Christian, the

  17. Christian life, it wasn't meant to be happy. Welcome back

  18. to that right now. Our world is a troubled world.

  19. If you read the news, you know that. If you

  20. don't read the news, you might not know that. But

  21. there are wars and rumors of wars going on around

  22. the world. The Ukraine and Russians continue to fight. The

  23. recent conflict escalating in the Middle East between Israel and Iran.

  24. Just yesterday, the US joining that fears of nuclear possibility

  25. of a nuclear world war, World War three. People talk

  26. about the world economy is in turmoil, trade wars, tariffs,

  27. interest rates, inflation that threaten a recession. There's political conflict, violence, protests, vandalism, destruction.

  28. And then aside from all of that, we have all

  29. our own personal troubles as well, and I don't know

  30. what they are. Maybe their health, maybe their relationship struggles,

  31. maybe there's financial stresses. And these things can make us troubled,

  32. and they can make us fearful, and they can make

  33. us miserable, and they can make us unhappy. Is it

  34. possible to have joy in the midst of troubles? Many

  35. years ago there was another troubled time, and this also

  36. was in the Middle East, was in the country of Israel.

  37. It was the greatest human event of all time. And

  38. for three years Jesus had and his disciples had went

  39. around in a public ministry, ministering to the needs of people,

  40. healing and feeding and preaching about a kingdom of God,

  41. kingdom of heaven. And Yeah, as they came to the

  42. end end of Jesus earthly ministry, rather than a kingdom

  43. being established and built like they had been promised. Everything

  44. seemed to be falling apart. Judas had just left, and

  45. I'll get to the passage here in John. I want

  46. to go to the Gospel of John the story there.

  47. But after the Supper, Judas had left to fulfill his

  48. secret mission, which was a plan to betray his master,

  49. his friend Jesus, except it was no secret to Jesus,

  50. of course, he knew another one of jesus close friends, Peter,

  51. was going to be denying that he even knew Jesus. Shortly,

  52. Jesus would soon be arrested and the rest of his

  53. friends with scatter into the night. But in the middle

  54. of that turmoil, as Jesus was there on the eve

  55. of that night, Jesus spoke to and encouraged the closest

  56. of his disciples there and his friends. He spoke about comfort,

  57. He talked about the comforter will be coming. He talked

  58. about also coming hardships. And he talked to them about

  59. peace and about joy. Why joy and what did joy

  60. have to do with the trouble that they were all facing?

  61. And that is a subject that I want to talk

  62. about a bit here this morning. It's been on my

  63. mind for the last year or two. I'm not sure

  64. a book I had listened to triggered this. I'll maybe

  65. talk just a little bit more about that. And I've

  66. been thinking about that and pondering this subject of joy,

  67. and I need to say, just to make myself feel

  68. better that I as I thought about that subject from

  69. day to day and over the last months, I become

  70. and became more aware of its need in my own life.

  71. I don't in fact, I would say just this last

  72. week was a all kinds of little tests for me personally,

  73. and I thought, and I told my wife, the Devil's

  74. alive and real, putting a subject to the test. So

  75. although I've not mastered it, and don't want to pretend

  76. that I have, I do believe that it is very

  77. very important. I believe that it matters to God, and

  78. it matters to us, and it matters to our fellow men.

  79. And we want to look at some skip through some

  80. of the verses in the Gospel of John, kind of

  81. thirteen to six. But the key verse, I guess i'll

  82. give a key verse here is in John fifteen eleven.

  83. And if you want to, you can turn to the

  84. spot in the Bible. I'll read some other verses there

  85. as well. This is just jumping in here in the

  86. middle of Jesus almost for three four chapters. He just

  87. has a lot to say. He's kind of repeats himself,

  88. kind of circles back around. But the theme was very

  89. much a burden for his disciples. He's trying to encourage them,

  90. he's trying to warn them. And the one verse here

  91. John fifteen eleven says, these things have I spoken unto you,

  92. that my joy might remain in you, and that your

  93. joy might be full. And I don't know if it's

  94. a very good title, but it's the title I gave

  95. just to take the words of Jesus, and that is

  96. that your joy may be full. And I'd like to

  97. think about that joy being full. You have full joy

  98. this morning. And I realize that probably happiness and joy

  99. technically isn't exactly the same. But this was a desire

  100. for Jesus. Jesus had for his followers. And we can

  101. circle back to this question, and maybe we will more.

  102. Does it matter if we have joy? And if so,

  103. why and if why not? If not? Why not? One

  104. thing that I think probably that the world in general

  105. universally agrees with any religion, culture, race, is that individuals

  106. desire to have joy, They want to be happy, they

  107. want to feel positive in life and to have that

  108. inner peace. What brings you joy? What robs you of joy?

  109. Some things we want to talk about this morning, But

  110. first let's do a little brief overview of John here

  111. John thirteen. I want to take some time to read this.

  112. I gave you a little bit the context already there

  113. with Jesus, but just a little bit more in chapter thirteen.

  114. We know that is the feet washing chapter, and this

  115. is right after Jesus had his last supper with his disciples.

  116. He washed their feet, he fellowshipped with them, he visited

  117. with them, had a good time, I believe, and Jesus

  118. was trying to encourage his friends, those that he loved

  119. about the disappointment, the suffering, and the confusion that was

  120. right around the corner. And if there's an interesting verse

  121. in John thirteen twenty one that Jesus that John the

  122. writer observes about Jesus. Jesus doesn't say this himself, but

  123. it says when Jesus had thus said he was troubled

  124. in his spirit and testified and said barely, I say

  125. unto you that one of you shall betray me. Jesus

  126. was troubled in his spirit. And we're talking about joy

  127. this morning. Jesus must have been visibly troubled in some way.

  128. And why was he troubled? Well, we know that the

  129. reason he was troubled here was because of a broken

  130. relationship with one of his close friends, Judas, whom he

  131. loved and had spent three years together, and was in

  132. the middle of Judas was in the middle of making

  133. a terrible decision that he hadn't understood and thought through,

  134. and he got caught up in the moment. I don't

  135. believe Jesus was troubled because Judas was betraying him, and

  136. Jesus felt bad about being betrayed necessarily as much as

  137. he as he cared for Judas. Jesus' mission was going

  138. to go on. But Judas was a friend of Jesus.

  139. He had been with him, and when you spend three

  140. years was someone in that close a fellowship, you create

  141. a bond. And so it says that as Judas was

  142. about to leave, Jesus was troubled. He was eating suffer,

  143. he was having fellowship, he had washed their feet. And

  144. so my first point here this morning, and I don't

  145. want to make it a big point, but I think

  146. it's just something that we need to acknowledge and reckon with.

  147. I don't want to try to hold up things that

  148. really aren't attainable, that sound good and all that, and

  149. so the first point here I'll just make briefly is

  150. that the reality that hard things come. We have disappointments, betrayals,

  151. relationship struggles, pain, suffering, grief, sickness, and there are times

  152. and moments, maybe period of our life where we become troubled.

  153. We do not feel very joyful. And I don't think

  154. we need to always pretend otherwise. And I don't believe

  155. that it is wrong to have some trouble in our

  156. hearts from time to time. But it is also true

  157. that it is not God's will that we should live

  158. and stay in a troubled state, Jesus says in John fourteen.

  159. Moving on, you can follow along with me. I'll read

  160. the first three verses of John fourteen. So it just

  161. said that John observed that he was troubled. But then

  162. Jesus says, and John fourteen one, he says, let not

  163. your heart be trouble. You believe in God, believe also

  164. in me. In my father's house are many mansions. And

  165. if it were not so, I would have told you

  166. I go to prepare a place for you. And if

  167. I go and prepare a place for you, I will

  168. again and receive you unto myself. That where I am

  169. there ye may be also. And he goes on and

  170. says more, talking about the comforter and coming. But Jesus.

  171. Here it's like he gathers himself after the reality, after

  172. the sorrow in his heart, for what Judas has chosen

  173. to do. And he girds up, and he focuses on

  174. the others, and he says, let not your heart be troubled.

  175. And what he does here is gives them a focus

  176. on a bigger, an eternal and a future that kind

  177. of eclipses that that little painful moment that he was in.

  178. And he goes and verse fourteen, excuse me, moving ahead

  179. in fourteen verse twenty seven, just to hit a few

  180. more verses. Here, he says, peace I leave with you.

  181. My peace I given to you, not as the world giveth,

  182. give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled,

  183. neither let it be afraid. So there again he says,

  184. let not your heart be troubled, and jumping ahead to

  185. fifteen eleven, then already read that that these things have

  186. I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you,

  187. and that your joy might be full. What things he said,

  188. These things have I spoken unto you. Well, if you

  189. look back, and we don't have time to read all this,

  190. but chapter fifteen, previous to this, he talks about the

  191. vine and the branch and the illustration abiding in him

  192. and staying in him, and reminding them that in the

  193. midst of all this confusion, he takes the picture of

  194. a great vine and its branches, and he said, you know,

  195. don't panic, don't run, don't disconnect, stay anchored to the vine.

  196. So he makes that point, and he says again and a.

  197. All through these chapters he just inter weaves and repeats

  198. about continuing in the love that Jesus showed them, a

  199. sacrificial love. That was another thing that he said as

  200. a way to have full joy, and that the joy

  201. might remain in you. And another one is keeping his

  202. commandments previously, commandments that we maybe think of negative but

  203. commandments that were good for the good and well being

  204. of them and their joy. And it's and I like

  205. how it says that he doesn't say just joy, but

  206. he says that your joy may be full full joy.

  207. And I want to make the point. And this is

  208. again I just mentioned it briefly, but if you would,

  209. if we were to take the time to read the

  210. verses after verse eleven, if you just want to glance

  211. over them, Verses twelve thirteen, fourteen, He talks about, this

  212. is my commandment that you love one another as I

  213. have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this,

  214. that have man laid down his life for a friend,

  215. and so on. And I'll just say this for now.

  216. A key to joy is relationships. And that is just

  217. in this in different forms throughout his words. And now

  218. i'll read. The last verses I want to read is

  219. in chapter sixteen. If you move ahead versus twenty, I'll

  220. just jump in at twenty through twenty. I think four barely.

  221. I send to you that ye shall weep and lament,

  222. but the world shall rejoice. And ye shall be sorrowful,

  223. but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman

  224. when she is in travail has sorrow because her hour

  225. has come. But as soon as she is delivered of child,

  226. she remembereth no more the anguish for joy that a

  227. man is born into the world. For now ye, for

  228. ye now therefore have sorrow. But I will see you again,

  229. and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man

  230. taketh from you. That could be another title, but just

  231. it's a point. No man, no man taketh your joy

  232. from you, Verses twenty three and twenty four. And this

  233. that day ye shall ask, And in that day ye

  234. shall ask me nothing barely I say unto you. Whatsoever

  235. ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will

  236. give it you. Hitherto have you asked nothing in my name?

  237. Ask and you shall receive that your joy may be full.

  238. And Jesus makes this little illustration here the moment they

  239. were in of pain, and he's just reminding them that, yes,

  240. it's painful, Yes this is a dark time. But he

  241. compares a mother with a giving birth to a child

  242. and the birth pains, and there is it is very painful,

  243. it's scary. It's all those things. There's anguish in the moment,

  244. but the minute that that's over and the mother is

  245. holding her precious little baby, the sorrow leaves and joy

  246. is full in that mother's heart as she looks into

  247. the face of that little baby. What is joy? That's

  248. probably a good thing to consider. I don't know what

  249. you think of when you think of joy. Joy is

  250. not a shallow, giddy, lightheartedness. Joy is not always the evidence,

  251. is not always necessarily measured by the one who laughs

  252. the most. But joy, as I'm talking, and that the

  253. Bible is referring to here, is a cheerful, calm delight.

  254. And I like that, especially that last, a calm delight.

  255. I think our demeanor matters. I think we should express joy,

  256. and maybe we'll talk about that a little bit more.

  257. But that is not really the essence of joy, that

  258. the outward everything that we do. But it is a

  259. calm inner delight is what Godly joy is. That is

  260. what God and Jesus did and once his followers to

  261. experience and to have and full simply means complete, a

  262. complete calm and inner delight. Joy is a fruit just

  263. a few things here. Joy is a fruit or the

  264. evidence of the presence of God's spirit. We know it's

  265. a fruit of the spirit. Galatians five twenty two. But

  266. the spruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering.

  267. We could mention that so it is a fruit of

  268. the spirit. The Bible says that God, or maybe us

  269. as as God. Do you envision God as a God

  270. of joy? Or is he a man that sits up

  271. there with a furrow on his brow? The Bible says

  272. that God rejoices over his people with joy in zeph

  273. and Iyah three seventeen. In the Old Testament. I'll just

  274. mention this briefly. Won't go into it either, but much

  275. but God commanded his people multiple times to rejoice as

  276. a command, to keep feast days, to get together, to

  277. take time off work, to spend seven days together feasting

  278. and worshiping and rejoicing. Deuteronomy. I could read one verse,

  279. thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou and my son,

  280. thy daughter, and thy maid servant, and my manservant, and

  281. the levite and the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow

  282. that are within the gates. And he goes on and

  283. talks more sixteen eleven, says that will show me the

  284. path of life, and in thy presence is fullness of joy.

  285. And at thy right hand are pleasures foreverborn. So the

  286. Christian life is and I don't want to try to

  287. separate this or water down it, but it is self sacrifice,

  288. It is self denial, it is cross bearing, it is

  289. all those things. But it is also a calm delight

  290. at least that is what God desires for his people.

  291. The Gospel. You think about the word gospel when it

  292. was introduced in the New Testament. The word gospel means

  293. the good News. And when the angels came to the

  294. shepherds after Jesus was born, the angel said, fear not behold,

  295. I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be

  296. to all people. And he goes on and tells him

  297. about the birth of Jesus. So the whole event in

  298. the christ in life and Jesus and his purpose and

  299. all of that, it is a message of good news

  300. and is of joy. And maybe if we don't have that,

  301. that's why that would maybe one contributing factor to our

  302. Sunday School lesson of why it's hard to share something

  303. that you aren't don't believe in, don't love. Maybe you're

  304. thinking this all sounds good, brother, but you have no

  305. idea what I'm going through, and if you knew what

  306. my life has handed me, you would understand why I

  307. rarely have joy. And I'd like to just address that

  308. with a couple points. That might be true, that might

  309. be true to some degree that I don't fully understand,

  310. but there's someone that does. And this isn't coming from me,

  311. this message this morning, I'm trying to make it come

  312. from the heart of Christ, but it comes from Jesus,

  313. and he is the one teaching us, and he is

  314. the one that desired and that we have joy, and

  315. he does understand. Another point to that is everyone faces

  316. and experiences hardships of some kind, and it's not wise

  317. for us to in our head imagine or believe that

  318. we have at worse than others, and therefore we are

  319. justified in not being joyful. It's not helpful, it's probably

  320. not true. Another thing is joy is not the absence

  321. of hardship and sorrow, and this is important one I

  322. think we should all try to remember. Joy is not

  323. the absence of hardship and sorrow. But joy is one

  324. of the things that God has given us to help

  325. us through those difficult times. Where does joy come from?

  326. And is joy an emotion or a feeling or is

  327. it a choice? Is it our thinking is or is

  328. it a spiritual matter? If we're right with God or

  329. we just automatically joyful. I got a sketch on the

  330. whiteboard I'd like to share. I don't want to overcomplicate

  331. it and overwhelm you, and I won't go into every detail,

  332. but just a little bit here for you to consider,

  333. and then to maybe go into a little bit more.

  334. But joy just the definition there. But then there are

  335. areas that I think that our belief and maybe there's

  336. more that affect our joy and I have God made

  337. them all emphasies that. But you think about the human relationship.

  338. We have the body, soul, and spirit that you often

  339. hear and talk about. But if I got some of

  340. these wrong, you can correct me. But for the most part,

  341. our body, what we see, what pow we're made up

  342. or flesh or bones or nerves are all part of

  343. this or hormones, health, nutrients, exercise and rest. You got

  344. the soul, the emotions, the thoughts, choice will feelings, the

  345. spirit or the spiritual part of our life that we

  346. call which is redemption and a relationship with God and worship.

  347. And then human relationships and all these things. It's a

  348. quadrant of four things that I believe that sometimes we

  349. I don't want to overcomplicate it, but I think we

  350. often oversimplify it. Is what I'm concerned about, especially depending

  351. on our personality, and what I'm what I maybe mean

  352. by that is that especially in a church and in

  353. a setting, we we can feel like the spiritual which

  354. is very important and very foundational, and it is very necessary.

  355. It's kind of the soul area of our life that

  356. affects our joy. And I think that that's not right,

  357. and I think that that God. I know that God

  358. made us, and he and we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  359. And I can't dissect and explain everything to you, but

  360. these are areas that for whatever reason, God did not

  361. just make us angels that float around in spiritual beings.

  362. That he made us flesh and blood with false failures,

  363. our desires, our appetites, things that kind of war against

  364. the flesh and the spirit. There's that, but all of

  365. these things are part of God's creating us, and so

  366. from that standpoint, they're all a spiritual matter. They're all

  367. affect our relationship with God and how we respond in

  368. those areas. I'll just briefly go over them. I'm gonna

  369. have to keep moving because i really want to not

  370. go over time today. But the spiritual just hit those

  371. a little bit. The spirit the spiritual is we could

  372. think connected to the vine. Jesus gave that illustration. It's

  373. a good one, it's simple. But when the vine is

  374. not connected, the joy, the sap, the juice, the nutrients

  375. does not get to the vine. And so that is

  376. the the spiritual life, the relationship, the redemption, the being

  377. forgiven from our sins, and that whole thing. And you know,

  378. true joy in the aspect that we're talking about, comes

  379. from God, and it's very essential. Yes, there's elements of

  380. joy that we can have and people of the world

  381. can have without a relationship with God. But it's not

  382. the same, it's not as deep, it's not It isn't

  383. what Jesus was talking about. Not everything is only a

  384. spiritual matter. He created our physical bodies. And I'll just

  385. say a little bit about that. We can be right

  386. with God, we can forgive our sins, we can read

  387. our Bible, we can pray. But if we have not

  388. slept all night, or if we have not eaten properly,

  389. or we do not exercise, we do not take care

  390. of our bodies. It affects our joy. It just does.

  391. We can understand and that with a two year old

  392. that as parents, you understand. There comes a point when

  393. this child is unreasonable, he's being naughty, but discipline is

  394. not what he needs in the moment. At that time,

  395. he needs to be taken to a dark room, laid

  396. down to rest, and put to sleep, and when he

  397. wakes up, his body is rested, he's joyful, he's happy again.

  398. There's moments like that, and so that we need to

  399. We need to just understand that that is part of

  400. the equation of joy if our body, and that is

  401. true for us. If I get I know, some people

  402. say I can just sleep, get on five hours and

  403. be fine, and I if I only get five hours

  404. of sleep a night too consistently, I can do it

  405. for a little bit, but then starts to take a

  406. toll and I get run down, I get grumpy, and

  407. I need to just go sleep. It's not an excuse.

  408. I don't think we should sin because we're sleep deprived

  409. and things like that, but it plays a part. We

  410. have hormones and this This is you know, really complicated

  411. but or beyond what I understand. But just a few

  412. of them, like adrenaline and cortisol. Those are hormones again

  413. that God gave us for a purpose to There are

  414. survival instincts that when something happens we fight or flight

  415. and we get that surge of adrenaline and cortisol and

  416. it has its place. There's happy hormones of dopamine, sera

  417. tone and oxyoxytocin andendorphins that again they're they're I don't

  418. know how they all work, but they are. They are

  419. released when we experience pleasant things. They feel good. They're

  420. pain relievers when you eat good food and it just

  421. feels so good. Those are those partly those hormones that

  422. God has given us to get a task done, to

  423. achieve a goal, to go exercise, to experience experience kindness.

  424. When you walk down a hall and and you pass

  425. a person and they glower and look at the floor,

  426. or if they look at you and say good morning

  427. and smile and say something, there there's a there's an

  428. actual physical effect that comes over us. Those are God given,

  429. those are those are just part of our body. There's

  430. appropriate physical touch hugging a child, wiping away tears. That

  431. that is also part of the human connection of joy

  432. in marriage, there's the physical relationship in in sports. I

  433. find this interesting that, you know, there's the high fives

  434. and the fists, bumps by the tough guys and different things.

  435. And I'll just say this, I didn't do a lot

  436. of thought on this, but I see we kind of

  437. shrink back from the Holy Kiss for whatever reason it's

  438. and I understand that, but I wonder if if it's

  439. not the Holy kisses, it's not so much that it's

  440. the Holy Kiss's fault as some other things that make

  441. it seem a little awkward and weird for us. And

  442. yet the men of the world are bumping and thumping

  443. and high five and but it's that physical touch, it's

  444. that handshake that connects people. It's real, it's it's a

  445. it's a real, physical, joyful human connection. He created our soul,

  446. the emotions, the choice, our thoughts, the will to choose,

  447. our nervous system, the ability to think. And you know,

  448. I don't understand and again all the emotions, the emotional

  449. part of our body. But it's real. And if if

  450. we as young healthy people don't think so. You know,

  451. if you experience some day or witness someone that has

  452. got overloaded for whatever reason, has a nervous breakdown, that's

  453. a that's a part of reality, and it's a it's

  454. a hard thing, something is not healthy and taken care

  455. of in the body. One other area human relationships, and

  456. and probably that's the one in the background of my mind,

  457. was the thing that was triggered in a book that

  458. I read or listened to a year or two ago.

  459. And I'll get to that. But again, these human relationships

  460. are part of what God created. He created Adam and

  461. Eve in the garden and then and then humanity from there,

  462. and the Bible it's so important. The Bible talks so

  463. much about that, the importance of and instructions on how

  464. to love one another and to get along and you know,

  465. to love one another. Phrase on a pulpit is just

  466. like it's so said so often it becomes almost meaningless,

  467. but it is essential, and it is crucial, and it

  468. was the second and greatest commandment, next to loving God

  469. as ourself. Joy is a little bit like maybe you

  470. could think of it like gas in a car or

  471. running a marathon without food and water, or like fertile soil.

  472. When soil is fertile and has its proper nutritions, little

  473. plants can just blossom and grow. But when there's no joy,

  474. the soil is depleted, and plants suffer and struggle and

  475. often die, don't do well, and when we when we

  476. live a joyless life, we run out of gas in

  477. different ways. Another reason that it's very important to be

  478. full of godly joy is that hearts that are low

  479. on joy are very susceptible to addictions and to pseudo

  480. joys substitute joys. When we have that hole in our

  481. heart that is not filled with a proper, healthy, godly joy,

  482. we are just very very susceptible to falling into all

  483. kinds of things like drugs, alcohol that doesn't affect us

  484. so much, but it affects a lot of people, pornography, pleasure, entertainment,

  485. even food. Food is not wrong, but when we overuse

  486. it when we're glat it can also be a form

  487. of filling that void. All these things give us the

  488. human body short bursts of joy and pleasure that seem

  489. like joy, but then they drop us back into despair.

  490. If we don't have the joy of the Lord so

  491. it's just that's what creates that addiction cycle. If we

  492. want that joy, we want that feeling, but it doesn't last,

  493. and so someone just gets into whatever their vice is

  494. one of the one of the greatest safeguards to all

  495. of that. We preach against that and don't do that,

  496. and don't do that, and don't do that. But when

  497. our heart is empty and does not have joy, it's

  498. pretty hard not to do those things. And that is

  499. a reason to seek to have our hearts and our

  500. minds filled with God's joy. A few things that take

  501. take away our joy, or we could call joy leaks.

  502. I'm just going to hit these briefly. Worry and fear.

  503. You already know this, but worry and overthinking our future.

  504. I want you to listen to this. It's just basic,

  505. but it's it's true. Worry and overthinking about our future

  506. robs us of joy and peace in the moment, and

  507. then a lot of the time those future things don't

  508. even happen, and even if they do, worrying about it

  509. didn't help. All you did is ruin your whole time

  510. between that and what you're worrying about, and you're unhappy,

  511. you're fretting, and Jesus taught us in Matthew six, the

  512. end of the chapter on the Sermon on the Mountain,

  513. how to deal with worry and anxiety and not to

  514. do that. But you know, there is the reality. And

  515. I said, I don't want to try to hold up

  516. unattainable ideals. But what do you do with hard things

  517. in life? Just complex situations. We do need to think

  518. about them. We need to spend time thinking through them.

  519. And some of them are unpleasant, and so we need

  520. to dedicate some time to consider, to think. But God

  521. has given us the avenue of prayer. He's given us

  522. the avenue of counseling with other godly people. But prayer

  523. is a thing that God has given us that we

  524. can come to and give our worries, ask for wisdom.

  525. And then the mistake that I often make is I'll

  526. tell God, But then I'll just take that worry right

  527. with me and go back to my day. And if

  528. we leave those worries and let them go, we can

  529. have joy. To leave them in God's hands and ask

  530. for wisdom doesn't shed us of thinking. But another one unforgiveness.

  531. Unforgiveness turns into resentment and bitterness and resentment and bitterness

  532. hardens our hearts and robs us of joy, and along

  533. with that it can bring us all kinds of other

  534. physical Unforgiveness is an underrated damaging problem in the lives

  535. of people. Unforgiveness locks us up in a prison of

  536. a joyless of joylessness, wrong thinking patterns, and we could

  537. go all different directions with this. There's many ways we

  538. can think wrong, but you know we can. We can

  539. wake up on a Monday morning and regardless of the

  540. circumstances and the realities around us, just what we do

  541. in our minds and think on and dwell on in

  542. our house and our pickup, in our tractor, in our truck,

  543. wherever we might be, makes a tremendous difference of our

  544. our having joy or not. We can take some real

  545. trips in our mind that are just not healthy and

  546. helpful or real. Two Corinthians ten fives as cast down

  547. imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the

  548. knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity everything or every

  549. thought to the obedience of Christ. Since we need to

  550. control our mind, that is part of joy, of protecting

  551. joy idleness. I'm gonna make two points that are opposite

  552. here idleness and living for self. Now a person is

  553. selfish and is pursuing joy like gold at the end

  554. of a rainbow, he'll never find it if he's just

  555. in a selfish state of mind. He's just trying to

  556. get that feeling of joy. A self focus robs us

  557. of godly joy. Joy is often a byproduct or a

  558. fruit of living God's living life, God's way. And now

  559. the next point I want to give in a little

  560. bit of an opposition of this, and that is things

  561. that rob stress can be stress and over busyness. And

  562. there's these two opposing problems. And it's good to be busy,

  563. to serve and to help and to be productive, but

  564. it is also possible to just get overwhelmed with good projects,

  565. things that are good, like Mary and Martha. And sometimes

  566. we need to sit at the feet of Jesus. When

  567. we're over busy and stressed, we lose our joy. It's

  568. just too much. Some people can handle more than others.

  569. We understand that, but we need to find that where

  570. God wants us to be in serving and in saying no.

  571. And I'll say this, and you've heard it before probably,

  572. but I'll just put it out there for you to consider,

  573. and I almost don't like it. It's called the eighty

  574. twenty rule, and what that means is that and this

  575. is true in organizations, and I hope it's not true

  576. in churches, but it's kind of a people problem. Twenty

  577. percent of the people do eighty percent of the work,

  578. do to eighty percent of the production. And I don't

  579. like that that even being possibly a reality. And I

  580. don't think we want to start pointing fingers and saying

  581. I'm a twenty percenter, But I think it'd may be

  582. good once in a while for us to consider the

  583. group we are in. Where do we fall in that.

  584. Are we stepping up and filling our role? Or am

  585. I just on the shirt tail riding along while a

  586. small minority is just pulling this thing along. We need

  587. to consider that and adjust accordingly. Some need to go

  588. one way or the other. A well functioning team, organization

  589. or church where everyone is engaged and pulling together is

  590. a pleasant thing to be a part of, and it

  591. brings joy. You see that on a job of five

  592. or six guys, they're working together, everyone's filling their role,

  593. and there is just production and joy and good will

  594. all around. The minute you have a person or two

  595. just kind of leeching. It kind of robs from everyone

  596. things that bring us godly joy. Well, I already touched

  597. on some redemption. I just want to say that again,

  598. the source of joy comes from like Jesus said, he

  599. wanted to give them his joy. God and Jesus are

  600. the source of joy. It's a foundational principle. Some other

  601. just little practical things. Singing and I'm not a big singer,

  602. but if you ever are dealing with not feeling will

  603. bad mood. God has given us the gift of singing,

  604. and it's the last thing you feel like doing when

  605. you're but it's one of the best things that we

  606. can do. It takes our minds off of ourselves. There's

  607. something about singing, and we can listen to music too,

  608. but singing with our own voice is even better. If

  609. we let ourselves go and sing in thanksgiving, it often

  610. kind of fills our hearts with joy. Another one is gratitude. Gratitude,

  611. i'd say, and joy are just kind of like Siamese

  612. twins if they support and encourage each other. Is I

  613. don't know if it's possible to have one without the other,

  614. not long term, they pulled each other up gratitude and joy.

  615. And then the last point here I want to say

  616. a little bit more about fellow human relationships as a

  617. source of joy. God has given us that, and this

  618. is maybe where we come full circle back around to

  619. the question does it even matter if I have joy?

  620. Is that your business or your business if I have

  621. it or not? Well, it is if we're on the

  622. same team, the same home, in the same church, with

  623. the same group. Because joy. The fact is that joy

  624. or lack of joy does affect others. Joy is influential

  625. and affects other people. Sometimes I don't know about you,

  626. just sometimes it's just good. It feels good. Now, this

  627. is kind of an oxymoron, but it feels good to

  628. be grumpy and fussy and complain. There's just something just

  629. cut loose a little bit. I suppose you can debrief

  630. with your close friends in that way and it's fine,

  631. but on a regular basis and living life in that

  632. attitude is very selfish because although it might feel good

  633. to you, it doesn't feel good to anyone around you.

  634. And you know that you don't like your spouse to

  635. be grumpy and negative, or your family or your co workers,

  636. and so another maybe temptation to be a little grumpy

  637. sometimes and to not have joy is it's kind of

  638. a shaded form of manipulation. You know, a two year

  639. old throws a fit and shows how unhappy they are

  640. so that they can get what they want. Sometimes we

  641. as adults can be tempted to do that. You know,

  642. if I come in and be grumpy first with my wife,

  643. then maybe she'll be the one that needs to work

  644. at making me happy and I'll get something out of this.

  645. And so we can use this as manipulation if we're

  646. not careful, and we shouldn't do that. It's selfish of course. Relationships. Now,

  647. this book, I want to just give it to you.

  648. I'm not going to say much out of it. I

  649. think some of you have read it, but it's called

  650. The Other Half of Church by Jim Wilder, And if

  651. you're a book reader, it's not a big heavy book,

  652. but I think there's some really good things that would

  653. be worth our time if you have the time to

  654. listen to it or read it. Read it that is

  655. helpful in organizations, in churches. He's primarily talking about church.

  656. One of the main points that he makes I guess

  657. is that the church at large, the church has focused

  658. on It's not an Anabaptist book to just talk in

  659. general on truth, facts, doctrine, defining beliefs, and positions, which

  660. are all very important, but they're not complete. And he

  661. makes the case that there's often a big disconnect between

  662. those important things and many other very important aspects and virtues,

  663. like expressing joy and practicing joy in relationships with one another.

  664. We know this is true in marriage, that you know,

  665. facts and positions and agreements don't make a happy marriage.

  666. I mean, we have some of those understanding, But it's

  667. the little things. It's the connections, it's the play, it's

  668. the fellowship, it's the positive interaction. Joy is primarily transmitted

  669. through our face and our eyes. And I wrote on

  670. there somewhere eyes that say I'm glad to see you.

  671. And that might seem kind of trivial, and we're above

  672. all that, but we're not. Little things like that feed

  673. and share joy, and when we're sullen and unhappy and

  674. make it known, it kind of robs joy from others.

  675. Another thing I might say, just playing and eating and

  676. fellowshipping together is doesn't sound spiritual, but it can be

  677. spiritual in the big picture, it's part of building relationships.

  678. How about safe relationships having Do you know what I

  679. mean by safe relationship relationships that you're not always analyzing

  680. and worried about the possibility of being criticized picked apart.

  681. Criticism and backbiting destroy a sense of safety, fellowship and

  682. joy in a community. Empathy I got to mention this one.

  683. Empathy and compassion in times of sorrow. I said earlier

  684. that joy does not eliminate grief and suffering, but it

  685. shares in someone's grief and suffering and can help make

  686. it bearable. And I think that's really important. I think

  687. I would have not understood that basic principle. When someone

  688. is suffering and hurting and grieving, sometimes we want to

  689. go fix it and take it away, and we don't

  690. know how we can't, and so we just do nothing

  691. because I can't fix that problem. But sharing in the

  692. grief brings joy to wear a person. And you've probably

  693. experienced it, or you're in sorrow or pain and some

  694. brother sister comes and hugs you, says some kind words,

  695. and you're simultaneously experiencing both at once. There's this deep

  696. joy of gratitude for this person in my life at

  697. the same time I'm suffering. And that is the fuel,

  698. the gas in the tank that we are to help

  699. each other with the hug kind words, rejoice with them

  700. that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. And closing,

  701. I'll just ask a few more questions and a couple

  702. more thoughts. What makes faith? What makes a faith, a religion,

  703. a church compelling and attractive? What drew people to Jesus

  704. in comparison to the religion of that day? They were

  705. religious people. They came to him like magnets. Was it

  706. because he was a the way he dressed. Was it

  707. because he was a plain man, because he was conservative?

  708. Was it because he kept order and paid attention to detail. No,

  709. the scribes and the Pharisees did that. It was because

  710. he had a living faith, a doctrine that was alive,

  711. a fruit that was coming out of his life that

  712. was peace and joy, kindness and gentleness. And the disciples

  713. of Jesus were not just students enrolled for three years

  714. to learn about the Bible and to memorize it, but

  715. they were on a journey of character transformation. And I

  716. think that that is our journey, to strive to be

  717. on that journey. That is part of the work of

  718. the church, to disciple one another, to help one another,

  719. to try to continue to conform into the likeness of

  720. Jesus Christ. In one of those ways God wants us

  721. to live is with fullness of joy. I hope this

  722. can be a blessing encouragement. Jason, do you wanna Do

  723. you have some thoughts? Or sure, we just have a

  724. song and let's do that. Let's have a song and

  725. then we'll stand for a closing prayer after that. M
