  1. Greetings to each one tonight in the name of Jesus,

  2. our Lord. It's a joy to again be in the

  3. house of the Lord see what he may have for us.

  4. Appreciated the singing that prayer of is the prayer of

  5. mine as well, that the Lord would open the wells

  6. of grace and salvation and pour out a blessing upon

  7. us that would challenge our hearts in the way of truth.

  8. I appreciated the prayer of the brother in his prayer,

  9. he mentioned a few things that we want to consider

  10. further tonight. But before we go there, let's go to

  11. Isaiah sixty two. You may well be wondering when are

  12. we going to get to work on that well that's

  13. yet coming up Sunday morning. But Isaiah sixty two and

  14. verse three and four again verse one and two say,

  15. for Zion's sake, hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake,

  16. I will not rest until the righteousness thereof go forth

  17. as brightness, and the salvation thereof is a lamp that burneth.

  18. And the gentiles shall see thy righteousness in all kings,

  19. thy glory, and thou shalt be called by a new name,

  20. which the mouth of the Lord shall name join me.

  21. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the

  22. hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the

  23. hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed forsaken.

  24. Neither shall thy Land anymore be termed desolate. But thou

  25. shalt be called Hefzebah, and thy Land Beulah. For the

  26. Lord deliighteth in thee, and thy Land shall be married.

  27. Invite you to turn to John chapter fourteen for an

  28. opening scripture and text portion. The first several verses is

  29. where we will be taking our initial thoughts from John

  30. chapter fourteen, thinking especially of verse six. But the setting

  31. is pertinent. John fourteen, Verse one, Let not your heart

  32. be troubled. Ye believe in God. Believe also in me.

  33. In my father's house are many mansions. If it were

  34. not so, I would have told you I go to

  35. prepare a place for you. And if I go and

  36. prepare a place for you, I will come again and

  37. receive you unto myself. That where I am there ye

  38. may be also. And whether I go, ye know, and

  39. the way ye know, Thomas saith unto him Lord. We

  40. know not whether thou goest, And how can we know

  41. the way Jesus saith unto him, I am the way.

  42. I am the Truth, and I am the life. No

  43. man cometh unto the Father, but by me I'm entitled

  44. the message tonight the stability of truth. And I had

  45. some problems coming to that conclusion. There's a few other options,

  46. and I'll introduce them as we go along, as we

  47. think of the stability of truth. Now, the burden of

  48. the message tonight is in relation to a couple of things.

  49. One is simply the current events and the life situation

  50. around us. It is not hard to see that we

  51. live in a day of problem. We live in a

  52. day of relativity. It seems as though truth almost doesn't matter.

  53. We live in a day when you can choose what

  54. you want to believe, and you're supposed to be accepted,

  55. regardless what that might be. We are living in a

  56. day of apostasy. We're living in a day of backsliding,

  57. and both I see that both on a world scene

  58. and in individual churches, with individual people thinking of the

  59. world ever so briefly, but the world's in a mess.

  60. It doesn't take long as you look around, you look

  61. at Ukraine and Russia. I pay a little mind to

  62. that on a daily basis, simply because of our interest

  63. in what's happening there. And it's not hard to see

  64. the mess that that is in. But in Haiti, and

  65. in Gaza, and in Afghanistan and Syria, in Iran and

  66. Israel and a dozen other places, there is war. There

  67. is fighting, there's animosity, there's hatred, there is there's all

  68. kinds of wickedness that goes with that. It leads to

  69. poverty and displaced people and homelessness, and then there are

  70. all levels of abuse that come out of that. It's tragic.

  71. It is a tragedy. It's the factors of on the

  72. world scene, to be sure. Bringing it just a bit

  73. closer home, in many of our churches, there's brokenness. There's

  74. family relations that are strained and hurting between couples. We

  75. find homes that are in a mess. On a world scene,

  76. I hope this isn't in our midst. But out there

  77. people can't figure out even anymore what is male and

  78. what is female. If you'll check in yesteryear, I had

  79. checked one time what the Wikipedia said about that. They

  80. there's sixty three genders. And I have no idea quite

  81. how you come up with that I checked more recently

  82. and number was seventy two. I checked today and they

  83. said it's fluid. It's an infinite number. It's all depends

  84. what you think. And as many people as think is

  85. how many genders there might be. And again, the foolishness

  86. of that simply almost knows no bounds. But be that

  87. as it may. Thinking of the situation in our churches,

  88. the burden of my heart tonight is where will this

  89. church be in two or three or five or ten generations?

  90. And will in one hundred years from now will there

  91. be a conservative Anabaptist witness in Hall's the Orgon? And

  92. I know that's a big question, and probably there's not

  93. many of us that will be on the on the

  94. scene one hundred years from now. But if the Lord

  95. doesn't return, we can rest assured that there will be

  96. somebody here. What will the what will the church situation

  97. be like? Then? Now? Just looking at the at the

  98. things of apostasy, if we look in the scriptures, we

  99. could see in the Book of Judges, for example, how

  100. things go through cycles. And I'm not talking about motorcycles.

  101. I'm talking about the cycles of going from faithfulness to

  102. cooling off to turning away from God, and there's uh,

  103. there's idolatry, and there's all kinds of wickedness that are accepted,

  104. and then there is a there's a punishment from God,

  105. there's a chastening, there's a crisis that develops. In the

  106. Old Testament, it was the enemy countries nations would come

  107. and take Israel and jude to captive and just make

  108. it really, really tough for them. And eventually they would

  109. recognize the foolishness of their way and the idolatry of

  110. their path, and they would humble themselves and cry out

  111. to God, and God often usually sent a deliverer, and

  112. again there was a revival scene and people would turn

  113. their hearts back to God and drive the enemies out,

  114. and once again they were sacrificing and worshiping God and

  115. things were going well, and then this thing returned. I

  116. think there's at least seven cycles like that you can

  117. follow through the Book of Judges. It's tragic. Today we

  118. see a bit of that going on as well. We

  119. see it in individuals, individuals who once were walking with

  120. the Lord who drift away until there's no interest there

  121. anymore in following Jesus. And we see it in families,

  122. we see it in churches. We even see it in constituencies,

  123. where there's entire conferences that move, that drift, and that change,

  124. and that follow the patterns of the world, until there's

  125. a very little semblance there to the practice of godliness

  126. from the Word of God. And we ask ourselves, how

  127. can these things be? Why? What happened? What went wrong

  128. that a group of people or an individual or a family,

  129. or you can name the size of the group, But

  130. what went wrong that there was that kind of backsliding

  131. and turning away from God? And of course I have

  132. no silver bullet or exceptional wisdom and identifying that, I'm

  133. going to point to a few things tonight. But I

  134. was thinking about these things, you know, and especially as

  135. it pertains to the church, because the Church is intended

  136. to be the pillar and ground of the truth. And

  137. the truth is stable, the truth is solid, the truth stands,

  138. the truth is a place we can build on. And

  139. I was thinking of just a few verses. It says

  140. the pillar, the church is the pillar and ground of

  141. the truth. There's a verse that has often blessed me,

  142. and from Deuteronomy thirty two, where in Moses' song he

  143. says he God is the rock. His work is perfect

  144. for all his ways are judgment. A God of truth

  145. and without iniquity, just and right is he. That would

  146. be a great text for a sermon some time. But

  147. think of the solidity, the solid foundation ideas that are

  148. in that verse of God being a rock, his ways

  149. are judgment. He's a God of truth, and we can

  150. build on that. And in John seventeen, in the high

  151. priestly Prayer, Jesus prayed, sanctify them through thy truth, and

  152. then he said, thy word is truth and just. In

  153. the very next chapter, in chapter eighteen, Jesus was before

  154. Pilot and this question came up, the idea, the question

  155. of truth. And of course Pilot was trying to understand

  156. Jesus' position and where he was on these matters, and

  157. he asked Jesus if he was a king, and Jesus answered,

  158. this way to this end was I born? And for

  159. this cause I came into the world, that I should

  160. bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth.

  161. Here my voice. And then Pilot asks those timeless words

  162. in that question form what is truth? What is truth?

  163. Now tonight? That would make an interesting open discussion here

  164. to answer that question what is truth? And there's a

  165. couple of characteristics of truth that I want to consider here.

  166. Just in the opening ideas of the message, I find

  167. that truth is narrow. Truth is narrow, and just an

  168. example of that, as I think of the narrowness of truth,

  169. mathematical truth is narrow. Two plus three is five, not four,

  170. not six, only five. And we can add that thing

  171. upright horizontally. It doesn't matter, it doesn't change. It is

  172. a very narrow truth. It's not what you decide, it's

  173. not what I decide. It just is that's truth. Truth.

  174. Mathematical truth is narrow. Scientific truth is narrow. I wonder

  175. who knows what NaCl is Sodium chloride? What is it?

  176. It's the chemical name for table salt, not table sugar,

  177. not tea bags, not pepper salt, only salt. Whenever you

  178. mix ANACL together, Whenever you mix sodium and chloride, you

  179. get salt H two O. You put two atoms of

  180. hydrogen and one of oxygen together, you get water, not gasoline,

  181. not crude oil, not soda pop. You get water. It's

  182. a narrow truth. It is that way, and it's consistent

  183. geographical truth is narrow. The borders of Oregon are where

  184. the borders are, and they don't move around much. The

  185. border is where the border is, and we could go

  186. there and wish it was different. We could try to

  187. pull it one way or the other, and it really

  188. doesn't work. The geographical truth this is the border. Beyond

  189. that is another state or the ocean or whatever. Geographical

  190. truth is narrow. Historical truth is narrow. Abraham Lincoln was

  191. the sixteenth president, not the seventeenth, not the fifteenth, not

  192. the tenth, not the fourteenth, the sixteenth. It's the way

  193. it is. It just stands there. It's truth, and that's

  194. the way truth is. Now. Another thing that is narrow

  195. is the gateway to truth is narrow. Jesus talked about

  196. this in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter seven.

  197. I suppose you have those verses memorized where he says,

  198. enter ye in at the straight gate, the straight gate,

  199. and that's a narrow gate, because he says, why does

  200. the gate broad is the way that leadeth to destruction?

  201. And many there be which go in thereat because straight

  202. is the gate, and narrow is the way that leadeth

  203. to life. And it's because it's a it's the gate

  204. of truth. It's narrow, straight is the gate, and narrow

  205. is the way which leadeth unto life. And the sad

  206. thing is, he says, few there be that find it now.

  207. I drew a little diagram on the board behind me.

  208. It's it's not polished, it's kind of rough, but I

  209. want you to take a look at that, and I

  210. have there. There would, of course be multiple ways that

  211. we could try to describe the broad road and the

  212. narrow road, but I have at least put an illustration

  213. there of the two. There's two ways there. The one

  214. up there starts one way and goes another way, and

  215. the down here is another road, and both of them

  216. are traveling from this side to that side. Tell me

  217. which is the depiction of the narrow way and which

  218. is the depiction of the broadway? Trick question? No, this

  219. one's not even a trick question. Anybody want to venture?

  220. I guess the narrows on top. You agree with him? Okay,

  221. I see some heads nodding. That's very good. I have had.

  222. I've had this question in various settings that I'm often

  223. asked told that this one here's the narrow way. I'm

  224. not sure, why But you're right. The one up here

  225. is the narrow way. Why is that? Well, it's I

  226. think pretty obvious the as you get close to the

  227. gate that enters into that way, it is narrow. It's

  228. unapologetically narrow. You can't do this and you can't do

  229. that in that in that gate. Now, two other questions

  230. before I draw further. What is the most liberating condition

  231. known to man? It's life. Life is liberating. What is

  232. the most restrictive condition known to man? It's death. When

  233. you die, you can't do anything for yourself. They do

  234. it for you. They put you in a box and

  235. bring you up frontier and we have a service, and

  236. then you're buried. And so it's very restrictive. You can't

  237. do anything. You're totally helpless. You're bound. That's the condition

  238. of death. Now, looking at these ways, he says, the

  239. gateway into the narrow way is indeed narrow. But what

  240. does it lead to? Do you see what's happening. The

  241. further you go in the gate, the further you go

  242. on the narrow way. With this illustration, the wider it becomes,

  243. the more room, the more freedom there is in that way,

  244. Because it's a way of life, and life is liberating.

  245. Life is freedom, life is joy, life is peace, life

  246. is good. Let's look it the other way. This way

  247. here is very broad. Where it enters, there's lots of

  248. room for freedom and joy and do what you want to.

  249. You can live in rebellion and fit in here, no problem.

  250. It leads to death, and death is incredibly restrictive. It

  251. becomes narrower and narrower and narrower until a person is

  252. in bonded. You're bound. There's nothing you can do for yourself.

  253. You're on the table with lung cancer and the doctor

  254. can't help anymore because of the freedom and the joy

  255. of enjoying that cigarette until lungs are burned out that beer,

  256. until kidneys are destroyed, and it leads to death. It

  257. leads to destruction. Sin is that way. Now there's one

  258. other detail that I say, just a little bit tongue

  259. in cheek, but it is true. Did you know that

  260. on both of these ways you can do what you

  261. want to? Now? What did the preacher mean that I did?

  262. When you start in this way, you can do what

  263. you want to, and you can live according to the

  264. flesh for a time, and suddenly you can't do what

  265. you want to anymore because of the restriction here you begin.

  266. And when God gets a hold of your wanter, when

  267. God gets a hold of your will and changes that

  268. so that you want to follow him, suddenly you can

  269. live like you want to and enjoy the freedom of life.

  270. How can it be better than that? It's a it's

  271. a win win. You can do what you want to

  272. and it leads to life. Now that is of course,

  273. on the basis that your wanter has been thoroughly converted

  274. and you want to follow the Lord and please him

  275. and do what he wants you to the narrowness of truth,

  276. the stability of truth. Now another quick illustration that will

  277. use for the rest of the evening. What I am

  278. trying to illustrate there is that truth stands on two legs,

  279. just to say it bluntly or simply, And that diagram

  280. is like a two supporting pillars. And we have this

  281. ball of truth on top. And obviously what we want

  282. to do is we want to elevate the truth. We

  283. want to hold it high. Now we know that if

  284. you have a ball on top of a of a

  285. step ladder or whatever it may be, a diagram like that,

  286. and you kick either leg away, what's going to happen

  287. to the structure it falls, it won't stand. Both of

  288. those legs have to be there for the truth to stand.

  289. And as I was studying Scripture, I came across many

  290. pairs of ideas, pairs of truth that in a sense

  291. are opposing each other, and yet they balance each other,

  292. and some were puzzling. Just for example, early on, there's

  293. one in Galatian six that says that we should bear

  294. one another one another's burden, and three verses later it

  295. says for every man shall bear his own burden. How

  296. does that work? I mean, as the writer confused, And

  297. we could look at other portions like that. I think

  298. it's in Philippians where we are told to on the

  299. one hand, it is God which workethin you to bring

  300. you salve ation, and a few verses later work out

  301. your own salvation with fear and trembling. And again it's like,

  302. excuse me, now, which one is true? Why is he?

  303. It almost seems in opposition to each other. Well, as

  304. I began noticing these, suddenly I found them all over

  305. the Bible, and I want to share some of them tonight.

  306. We'll start with just some obvious things in the idea

  307. of salvation. That's where we're going to start in the

  308. plan of salvation, which is the primary which is more

  309. important God's part of salvation or man's part of salvation. Well,

  310. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody would just shout it out.

  311. It's God's part obviously, and that one's easy, is it not. Well, Indeed,

  312. as we look at salvation, there is a primary part

  313. that God plays. In fact, the Trinity plays a part

  314. in salvation. We could look at God the Father from

  315. John three point sixteen, and it says, for God so

  316. loved the world that he gave his only begotten son,

  317. that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have

  318. everlasting life. So that's the Father's part of that salvation.

  319. We could look at Jesus part of the salvation, and

  320. there's many of course that versus that we could consider.

  321. But like from Isaiah fifty three, verse five, it says,

  322. but he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised

  323. for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him,

  324. and with his stripes we are healed. So Jesus provided

  325. salvation in fact, he died, he shed his blood, he

  326. did everything necessary for salvation. Did he not even to

  327. the point of rising again? Well, if he did that,

  328. why has the whole world not saved? What's lacking? Even

  329. the spirit is involved in salvation. The Spirit and the

  330. bride say, come, and whosoever will come, and whosoever here

  331. hath come and take of the water of life freely,

  332. the Great invitation from Revelation twenty two. Well, the simple

  333. truth is when we look at salvation, we have God's part,

  334. and we must have man's part. And when we look

  335. at man's part, man must repent. For salvation to take place,

  336. man must believe. For God so loved the world that

  337. whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

  338. Romans ten nine and ten teach us that there must

  339. be public confession as a part of repentance, that if

  340. thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and

  341. believe in thine heart, thou shalt be saved. And we

  342. could look at many other scriptures. The point that I

  343. want to make is that in salvation, there's God's part

  344. and there's man's part, and it's really an irrelevant question

  345. to ask which one is more important. They both must

  346. be there or salvation doesn't take place. That's the point

  347. we want to consider tonight, and we're going to see

  348. that over and over again. The other night I looked

  349. at the verse from Revelation three. A beautiful truth that

  350. I love. He says, Behold, I stand at the door

  351. and knock God's part. If any man opened the door,

  352. Man's part, and both of those have got to happen

  353. for supping, for fellowship, for him to come in, they

  354. both must be there. There's another beautiful truth in First

  355. Corinthians three nine that has challenged me over and over again.

  356. It's a very simple verse. It says, for we are

  357. labors together with God. We are labors together with God. Now,

  358. if you allow me to, I'd like to pick on

  359. a few people here, and I don't know you real well,

  360. but I'm going to try. So. Brother Gerald here had devotions,

  361. and I think he has a wife. I assume she's

  362. here tonight. She's here. I don't know the sisters as well.

  363. It didn't take time to scan to see. But anyway, Jerald,

  364. Jesus loves your wife. Did you know that God loves

  365. your wife, indeed, but he doesn't just love your wife.

  366. He gives you the opportunity and responsibility to be a

  367. labor with him. In illustrating that, in showing it, in

  368. carrying it out well, you are a labor together with

  369. God in loving your wife. Is Joel here? Where's Joel?

  370. I don't see Joel there? He is? Joel's in the back.

  371. He kept his distance, but we were at his place today.

  372. Joel has children, Joel. Does Jesus love your children? He does?

  373. He nods his head. Jesus loves Joel's children. How are

  374. the children going to understand that? From early on? They

  375. understand the love of God? Because Joel is a labor

  376. together with God to love them, And it's God's love

  377. comes through him to them. We are labors together with God.

  378. God could reach down, I suppose, and do these things,

  379. but He chooses to work through us. It's really an

  380. incredible concept. Is Darren here tonight? And I see headshaking?

  381. Where's another teacher? Isaac is here? Isn't he there? He is? Isaac?

  382. Jesus loves your students. But how are the students going

  383. to feel the love of God? They feel it because

  384. you are a labor together with God to love those children.

  385. It's an incredible partnership, labors together with God. God does

  386. his part. We do our part to carry that work out.

  387. Brother Leland, I see you here. There's a church here

  388. that you are responsible to lead. Does God love the church?

  389. Of course, He loves the church dearly? Well how does

  390. how is the church going to feel that and understand that?

  391. You get to be a labor with God in leading

  392. the church. Isn't that incredible? A labor together with God.

  393. God's part, man's part. Somebody's going to preach your next Sunday.

  394. Well maybe it's me, I mean the next Sunday. But

  395. so God has a message. Somebody needs to study and

  396. be prepared to be a labor with God to carry

  397. that out. God's part, man's part. We are labors together

  398. with God. Incredible concept. Let's move on the one in

  399. Philippians I've already mentioned where he says, work out your

  400. own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God

  401. which worketh in you, both too willing to do of

  402. his good pleasure. So on the one hand we are

  403. told to work out our salvation. On the other hand,

  404. we are right in the next breath said that God

  405. is the one who does it. Both of them must

  406. be there, both God's part and man's part for salvation

  407. to be realized. Let's look at another idea. I have

  408. four or five that I want to consider in the

  409. natural laws of productivity. We have this idea and we

  410. see it in many different facets of life, positive and negative.

  411. Let's think about a battery and a car. Which one's

  412. more important, the positive or the negative? Trick question? You

  413. know the answer, right, I see smiles. So it's the

  414. positive that's most important. Right, sisters? What happens if we

  415. just have the positive hooked up nothing? What happens if

  416. we just have the negative hooked up nothing? Both of

  417. them must be hooked up. Both of them must be there, positive, negative,

  418. Which is more important? Work or rest? Six days? Shalt

  419. thou labor and do all thy work? The seventh is

  420. to be a day of rest. Why did God make

  421. the night? The day is for work, the night is

  422. for rest. And I don't have enough room to write

  423. all of these down. I would continue to list them.

  424. You can list them on your diagram. But if there

  425. is going to be physical output, we can't just say, well,

  426. work is more important than rest. And we just work

  427. twenty four hours a day. How long can we do that? Well,

  428. obviously it doesn't go long until we aren't doing any

  429. work anymore. There must be work and rest. It's in

  430. the natural laws of productivity, in the spiritual laws. It's

  431. the same way. As you read through the Bible, you

  432. will find over and over again commands thou shalt not

  433. take the name of the Lord, thy God in vain,

  434. thou shalt not steal, kill, whatever part of the ten commandments.

  435. But then there's the positive. Honor the Lord, honor thy

  436. father and mother, and so on. And Jesus gave many rules,

  437. many laws, many commandments of both. There were times when

  438. he said, don't do this, and then there were times

  439. that he said, do this, judge not, don't pray to

  440. be seen or heard, swear not at all, resist not evil.

  441. But then he said, teaching them to observe all things

  442. that I've commanded you, and lo I am with you,

  443. and so on. There is both the positive and the negative.

  444. And this is true in so many areas of life.

  445. Let's apply it, just for a minute to child training.

  446. So there's popular philosophies around today that there should be

  447. no negative. And I will be the first to admit

  448. that probably too many of our homes have too much negative.

  449. We let the child do as he pleases until he

  450. does something wrong, and then we pounce. And I understand

  451. that I've been around that block. I've had lots of

  452. opportunity with ten children. But the idea is that a

  453. child needs both the instruction of righteousness. It's as Ephesians

  454. four said, don't provoke your children to wrath. Don't be

  455. angry with your children, but do this. Bring them up

  456. in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, Train them,

  457. instruct them, teach them, bless them, praise them. And there

  458. must be that balance there. And whenever you hear a philosophy,

  459. may I name one or two that don't include both

  460. of those strands. You can know they're not from truth.

  461. Gentle parenting. Case in point, it is you don't need

  462. and you don't need that thou shalt not. All you

  463. need to do is just direct their behavior or ignore

  464. the wrong and that kind of thing. Reason with the

  465. child and praise him for the good and ignore the bad,

  466. and eventually it'll all go away. I beg to differ.

  467. It's not scriptural Let's look at the third idea, and

  468. this one is so fundamental as to all almost not

  469. need to be mentioned. But in the in the whole

  470. process of reproduction, which is more important male or female? Well,

  471. we know it's a Again, that's not even a trick question,

  472. that's an obvious idea. They must both be there. One's

  473. not more important than the other one. And we could

  474. look at scriptures. In the beginning, God made the male

  475. and female and so on. But let's make some spiritual

  476. applications for that. In the spiritual aspect of reproduction, in

  477. the spiritual aspect of growth within the church, what are

  478. the two things that we must have if growth and

  479. maturity is going to take place? And by the way,

  480. it's not that one side of this diagram is the

  481. good side, on the other side is the bad side,

  482. or one is right and one is wrong or positive

  483. or negative. I make no issue with that. It's both

  484. must be there for these processes to work and take place.

  485. So if there is going to be growth and maturity,

  486. we need the Word and we need the spirit. Think

  487. of scriptures, like where Jesus was at the well in

  488. John four and the woman was questioning him and Jesus said,

  489. God is a spirit, and they that worship him must

  490. worship him in spirit and in truth. And there we

  491. have two ideas. There must be spirit and there must

  492. be truth. It's not hard. It's no secret that there

  493. are groups that capitalize on one and there are groups

  494. that capitalize on the other. And when that is done

  495. to any exclusion of the other, it will fail. Guaranteed,

  496. it will not stand. There must be both of them there.

  497. Now there are people who quote them from Second Corinthians,

  498. and they say, but Paul said, the letter killeth, but

  499. the spirit giveth life. Well, this is true, and we

  500. could look at the context there and learn some things.

  501. But instead of going there, I'm going to turn to

  502. John six, where Jesus was dialoguing with people who were

  503. questioning him on these very things. And Jesus said this

  504. in John six and verse sixty three. He said, it

  505. is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing. The

  506. words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and

  507. they are life. And there he pointed to the idea

  508. over here, and he said, the words that I speak,

  509. they are spirit. The words must be there, and it

  510. is in the setting of the bringing together of the

  511. Word and the Spirit, that there is life that results.

  512. If tonight the Spirit is not active in your heart.

  513. You can listen to these words, and that's all they are,

  514. is just words. It must be there must be the anointing.

  515. There must be the activity of the Spirit of God

  516. in our hearts that takes the words from His Holy

  517. Book and applies them to our heart. And suddenly those

  518. words are not in paper and ink. They live, and

  519. they become a part of our life, and they change us,

  520. and they mold us into the character and image of

  521. Jesus Christ. But the two must be there. And if

  522. we ignore the word and we say I just need

  523. the Spirit, that's what's the important thing is if we

  524. capitalize on that at the expense of the truth of

  525. the Word of God, we will run off the track guaranteed.

  526. In fact, maybe I should just introduce this idea at

  527. this point. I believe the things that I am sharing

  528. are so important, not because I'm saying them, but there

  529. has no church endured from generation to generation unless they

  530. get this right. If there is, if there is a

  531. veering off on one side or the other here, on

  532. any one of those we become lopsided and ultimately lose out,

  533. ultimately apostasize. They must both be there to stay on track.

  534. Turn to Romans chapter twelve. There's one there that I

  535. didn't see until just recently. I was studying this idea, well,

  536. I was studying another subject or chapter. I think it

  537. was when I was preaching through the Book of Romans.

  538. I came across this idea here in Romans twelve, and

  539. I said, wow, there it is again, another two legs

  540. of truth right there. In Romans twelve, Verse one, he says,

  541. I beseech you there, for brethren, by the mercies of God,

  542. that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable

  543. unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not

  544. conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing

  545. of your mind, that you may prove what is that

  546. good and acceptable and perfect will of God. I think

  547. we do pretty good on the first of those two categories.

  548. The two legs of that truth are be not conformed

  549. but be transformed. Are both of those ideas active in

  550. our life tonight? We could? In fact, I think they're

  551. important enough. I'm just going to identify them on here.

  552. Not conformed but transformed. It's not you don't have to

  553. be around the block long to find groups of people

  554. that do quite well with not being conformed, but the

  555. transformation is lacking. The transformation is lacking. I'm not sure

  556. if it's possible to be transformed without the conformation, uh,

  557. without the without the other way working. But the point

  558. is both of those ideas have to be there for

  559. this to be a truth that is life changing. Now

  560. there's too many of us that you know, we're we

  561. get the clothes right, and then we are not to

  562. the world. Well, it's much more than that, of course,

  563. it's an entire change of life and lifestyle to not

  564. be conformed to the world. And that's important, it's very important.

  565. But it's as important for maybe even more so, to

  566. be transformed by the renewing of the power of God

  567. in our life. And when that transformation is there, suddenly

  568. the be not conformed makes sense and it's not a

  569. burden anymore. It's a freedom because it's a balancing truth.

  570. Be not conformed, but be transformed. Let's go on to

  571. another area. Let's look at church life. This is my

  572. fourth point in church life, which is more important. The

  573. where's the the emphasis is it on the individual or

  574. is it on community. Well, I can turn to number

  575. of scriptures. We could look at the a scripture from

  576. Romans fourteen where he tells us, so every one of

  577. us must give account of who the person beside you

  578. the preacher, No, it says himself. Every one of us

  579. needs to give account of himself to God. And that's

  580. in the community, that's in the church, that's this group

  581. that is here. But each one of us must give

  582. account of himself to God. No one else is going

  583. to be there for us. Well, we could say wow,

  584. And there's many other aspects where the individual is important.

  585. I can't get saved for you and you can't get

  586. saved for me. It must be an individual relationship with God.

  587. But it doesn't end there. There's so many scriptures. Far

  588. as we have many members and one body, and all

  589. members have not the same office. So we being many

  590. are one body in Christ and everyone members one of another.

  591. It's because we are a community, and both of those

  592. ideas need to be there and active. For a church

  593. to prosper, there has to be individual accountability and there

  594. has to be a group consciousness of the entire community together.

  595. Both of them must be there. Another idea within the

  596. church in one sense. I've already mentioned this, but I'm

  597. going to capitalize on it. The whole idea of spirit

  598. life and the other one just falls out of my

  599. mind right now. The structure, or we could say form.

  600. Have you ever heard people that are a little disenchanted

  601. with the structure in the church, and they say, what

  602. we really need is life. Our church is dead. Well

  603. maybe it is. Let's visit a wax museum, Organder Mountain,

  604. or Cabella's or whatever your favorite store of that nature is.

  605. There are lots of forms. There are life like forms,

  606. there lots of them. I was in a wax museum

  607. some time ago and there was a display there and

  608. this wax figure. Ah, it was very lifelike. And I

  609. was there scrutinizing this character sitting there. I wish I

  610. could have gotten closer. They had it roped off for

  611. a good reason. And all of a sudden the fellow

  612. winked at me, and I said, this is too much.

  613. I wish I could have gotten close enough to pinch

  614. his nose, you know. But it was a very life

  615. like wax figure. And of course you've seen the forms

  616. that are in these kinds of places. But they're dead.

  617. They're dead. They look real, they look very real, but

  618. they're dead. And the possibility is that here tonight there

  619. are life like forms that are dead. I hope that's

  620. not the case, but I'm saying the possibility exists. Now

  621. let's look at the other side. So we've talked about

  622. structure and form. What we really need in church's life

  623. we need to get the spirit. What do we mean

  624. by that? I mean we should hop around, we should

  625. yell a little bit, or run or jump or shout hallelujah.

  626. They are amen. If that's the case, we're real quiet

  627. here tonight. But no, so what do we mean by

  628. life in the church? So I'd rather not take anybody

  629. apart here. Let's move outside to a tree. I would

  630. like for somebody to go out to a tree and

  631. bring me in some life, or go home to your

  632. cow and bring the life back here. What would you bring?

  633. Is it possible? Well, we could bring the blood of

  634. the cow or the sap of the tree or whatever.

  635. But is that the life. No, it's pretty dead. And

  636. even that stuff it can be fluid, but it's not life.

  637. You know what. Life doesn't exist outside of structure. Did

  638. you hear that life doesn't exist outside of structure, as

  639. I understand it. And so in that tree out there now,

  640. the tree can be dead, to be sure, But for

  641. the tree to be alive, there must be the structure

  642. there that carries the life, or it ceases to live.

  643. It's it can't exist in any other way. Same thing

  644. is true with the cow. There can be structure there

  645. without life. Can't be life there without structure. They have

  646. to both be there. You can't extract the one without

  647. the other. And tonight in this church there can be

  648. structure without life. I guarantee that there cannot be life

  649. without structure. Life exists within the structure. And so when

  650. we ask for life and spirit and enthusiasm and emotion,

  651. well then we need to back up and ask ourselves

  652. what are we asking for? What do we want? What

  653. do we mean by that? Are we talking about emotion?

  654. Are we talking about enthusiasm? Are we talking about people

  655. following Jesus? What are we talking about when we talk

  656. about getting the spirit or getting life? I hope that

  657. that makes sense to us. Jesus said, in him is life,

  658. and his life is the light of men. His life

  659. in us is what shines out and there's a number

  660. of verses that we could read John five twenty six,

  661. for as the Father hath life in himself, given to

  662. the son to have life in himself, I given to

  663. them eternal life, and they shall never perish, we read,

  664. and so we understand as we consider that, that it

  665. is life that energizes the structure. It is life that

  666. gives life to the structure and makes it a living entity.

  667. And those two things have to be present in this

  668. church if it's going to endure for generations to come.

  669. Not only does life energize the structure, but it is

  670. the structure that protects the life. And that's a very

  671. interesting concept as well. When we think of the life

  672. of a tree, it is the woody structure of that

  673. tree that protects the life within and it continues to

  674. flourish from generation to generation. It's that way in your cow.

  675. It's that way in you. It is your structure that

  676. protects the life within and makes it possible for that

  677. life to energize the structure. It works together. They must

  678. both be there. Let's go on. The next concept that

  679. I want to consider is simply a few factors of

  680. the Christian life, kind of personal ideas of the Christian life.

  681. The first night we talked about the first Commandment, and

  682. I didn't make much of an issue of it. But

  683. Jesus said that one of the important things, the most

  684. important thing, is the first commandment. And then what did

  685. he say next? He said, the second is like unto it.

  686. He said, on these two hang all the law and

  687. the prophets, the first one and the second one. And

  688. that's very interesting when you take and start to explore that,

  689. because the first commandment has to do with our relationship

  690. with God. The second commandment has to do with our

  691. relationship with each other, loving our neighbor as ourself. And

  692. he said, there are no two commandments. There are no

  693. two others that are greater than these two. And I'm

  694. not going to say that they are equal to each

  695. other or whatever. That's beside the point. I'm simply saying

  696. they must both be there. He said. The one is

  697. like he said, the second is like. The first is

  698. as important as the first. Perhaps in fact, that is

  699. consistent with scripture. Go to first John four and we

  700. find out that a person who says I love God,

  701. I sure can't stand that boy on the front bench here.

  702. He said, he's a liar. He's a liar. There's no

  703. truth in him. He who doesn't love his brother whom

  704. he can see, how can he love God whom he

  705. doesn't see? And there we have that same truth of

  706. the first and second commandment coming together. The whole idea

  707. of doctrine and practice in a sense, we've already talked

  708. about that, but let's just put it on here because

  709. I think it is a very important detail. As I

  710. look back over church history, there were churches who had

  711. their doctrine pretty much down to a science. They knew

  712. the truth, they taught the truth, but somehow they didn't

  713. get around to practicing it. Those constituencies are not around

  714. today in any conservative manner. The whole idea, we can

  715. be profound on our doctrine unless it finds expression in practice,

  716. our church will not endure from generation to generation. It

  717. simply will not happen. The two must be there. There's

  718. a few other just ideas. I'm going to put two

  719. more down than I amount of room anyway, but the

  720. whole idea of inner experience an hour very similar. I

  721. guess inner or our more important. It's not more important.

  722. They must both be there. And perhaps the epitome of

  723. these is the whole idea of faith and works. Faith

  724. and works. You know, when we compare faith and works,

  725. if i'd ask you tonight which one's more important, faith

  726. or works? Duh, it's faith, Come on, you know. I

  727. mean that's the spiritual entity, or is it. The Bible

  728. is very clear in the Book of James that to

  729. say you have faith and to not have works, Sorry,

  730. my friend, you're not speaking the truth. It doesn't work

  731. that way. They must both be there. He says, faith

  732. without works is dead. It's a nonexistent faith. It really

  733. isn't faith at all unless it is unless it is practiced,

  734. unless it is lived. Now again, we could if we

  735. come over here and capitalize on here, well, then the

  736. important thing is works. No, we can't go there there.

  737. Works without faith is dead as well. It's simply a show.

  738. And so it's not. Again, it's not one side of

  739. this structure that I'm capitalizing on. Both of these things

  740. must be there. If our church is going to endure

  741. from generation to generation, they must both be there. So

  742. I think about the stability of truth. I think, and

  743. earlier one thing I was going to I thought about

  744. entitling the message inseparable twins. Inseparable twins, because that's what

  745. they are. What you're looking at. There is twins that

  746. can't be separated. If we take either side away, we

  747. will suffer. They've got to both be there. The whole

  748. idea is that truth stands on two legs. Now I

  749. need to qualify that. I think I'm sure there are

  750. truths in scripture. If you read through the New Testament,

  751. you'll find individual what statements of Jesus or whatever that

  752. are truth as he said them period end of discussion.

  753. I recognize that I didn't look for them or quantify

  754. them in that way. The other side of it is,

  755. as I continue to read, I continue to add to

  756. this list. This list is incomplete. There's a I just find,

  757. just like the Romans twelve idea of be not conformed,

  758. be transformed. I said, yes, there is two legs truth

  759. and they must both be there. And the Bible is

  760. full of those kinds of things. I've just given you

  761. an overview, just to scratch the surface. But again I

  762. remind you that doesn't get that balance right from generation

  763. to generation will endure. So may God give us wisdom,

  764. May God give us grace to work on those things,

  765. to consider them well and to apply them, to apply

  766. the stability of truth, and to enjoy the stability of truth.

  767. What a blessing that we can with confidence, walk, live, move,

  768. practice knowing that there is that we are on the

  769. narrow way and we can look forward with open face

  770. to the future and the return of our Good God.

  771. Let's stand for prayer. M m Our Father, which are

  772. in heaven. We come to you tonight in Jesus' name,

  773. thanking you that we have the truth. And Lord, we

  774. well recognize that we are human, and we make mistakes,

  775. and sometimes we misapply truth. Forgive us these errors. Lord.

  776. Our desire is that by your Holy Spirit, that we

  777. can open your word and between word and spirit find

  778. the reproduction of spiritual life active in our heart growth

  779. there and Lord, tonight, I want to pray a special

  780. blessing on Hall'sy Mennonite Church, and pray that as they

  781. live as a community, Lord, and indeed we recognize the

  782. importance of the individual and the need for each individual

  783. to be accountable to You and to follow You. But

  784. then as a community as a body, as they seek

  785. to have faith and seek work that out, as they

  786. apply the word to practice the doctrine to practice. Lord,

  787. I pray that you would bless them with wisdom and

  788. courage and understanding. We don't know when you're coming back,

  789. but should this church be here for a century or two,

  790. that there would be both faith on the earth and

  791. a conservative witness here in this community because of men

  792. and women of God who love you and are committed

  793. to following you. Now, Lord, we pray or dismissal blessing

  794. upon us. May your peace and grace be upon us,

  795. Your joy be our strength. May your spirit guide us

  796. and fill us with ongoing truth to apply these few

  797. ideas to our lives as we live day by day.

  798. And we want to give you the honor and glory

  799. in Jesus name a man
