  1. Chapel Harvest Valley in Prosser before me and Faye came up this

  2. way, we were on his elder board and it's a it's a fun, fun

  3. little church and he he's great. So welcome Joe Kata, and he's

  4. pretty awesome. Thank you, it's awesome to be

  5. here. I'm from California.

  6. That's when I was born and raised in a family farm and then

  7. moved out to Missouri for five years, came to the tri-cities in

  8. 2009. That's where my wife and I

  9. really grew up in the Lord. And, you know, we'll talk a

  10. little bit, Dave, today about, you know, finding your flock

  11. and, you know, the people that you want to hang out with and

  12. grow with and people that can pour into you and people that

  13. you need to pour into. And man, it was just a great

  14. friendship with Nick and Faye just from the very beginning of

  15. moving there. So that's how long I've known

  16. them. They've been pretty awesome in

  17. our lives. Let's pray.

  18. Lord Jesus, we love you, Lord, and we just thank you for all

  19. the good that you give us in our lives.

  20. Lord, we come here wanting to hear a word from you.

  21. And so, Lord, I pray as we go through the message, as we

  22. examine your word, that you're speaking to our hearts, You're

  23. changing us, You're making us more like you, and you're

  24. bringing us to a place. Of.

  25. Spiritual maturity, Lord, more and more every day that we

  26. desire to grow in you and and you are satisfying us Lord, as

  27. we continue to grow and desire. Thank you Jesus, Amen.

  28. You know, we all have a ministry, whether you're a

  29. parent, a spouse, if you're a Christian, you have a ministry

  30. just in regard to the people that you influence.

  31. And it's just how and where you you serve for the.

  32. Effectiveness of the Kingdom and so today we're going to talk

  33. about the one thing that's going determine to to determine your

  34. success in that ministry and the quality.

  35. Is. Humility, and we're going.

  36. To be spending most of our time in first Peter 5 and verses 5

  37. through 7. You can begin turning there if

  38. you'd like, but we're going to pick that apart and examine that

  39. passage, so. You know what gives me the right

  40. to talk about humility? There isn't much, really.

  41. If I tell you, it's because I'm really humble and you need to be

  42. more like me. That doesn't really work.

  43. Actually, it's the opposite, and we need to be looking at the

  44. humility of Jesus. But I do know what happens when

  45. you plant the flag on pride. Things do not go very well, and

  46. I'll give you some of those examples as we go through the

  47. study. Why Will?

  48. The success of your ministry be determined by humility.

  49. Because I can't learn, I can't understand, I can't repent, I

  50. can't forgive, I cannot show any grace or any mercy without

  51. humility. You know where where the the

  52. point in which humility ends and pride begins.

  53. All the understanding stops. All of the repenting stops.

  54. All the forgiving stops. There's no grace and mercy.

  55. It all stops when humility stops.

  56. Pride is the brick wall of your ministry and your relationships.

  57. To your wife, to your kids, to your family, to the people that

  58. work in anything. Pride is the brick wall that

  59. ends everything. Humility will ultimately have

  60. the single greatest say on where we end up in life and in the

  61. effectiveness of our Christian service.

  62. Humility is actually the most desired trait of a pastor.

  63. It's not how much he knows, it's not how much he influences.

  64. It's his humility. When I started going to Calvary

  65. Chapel tri-cities in 2009, I was pretty sure that God wanted me

  66. at that church. I'd been there three times and

  67. just, you know. Anytime I try to go somewhere

  68. else, God would. Just send me back there.

  69. And and then I had some concern about picking Pastor Steve as my

  70. pastor. I thought he was arrogant and

  71. that was a problem. For me, because I was arrogant

  72. and you know, 2 arrogant people in a church don't make for a

  73. happy church, so that wasn't going to work.

  74. And so my wife and I, we went and we met Pastor Steve in his

  75. office and we were going to leave or or go based on how this

  76. this discussion went in his office.

  77. And so I just prayed, God, you got to show me this is really

  78. where you want me to be. There's a lot of things that are

  79. working out here really well, but I just want to make sure

  80. that this one hurdle is, is is removed.

  81. I had just come out of the 7th Day Adventist faith.

  82. I thought I knew way more than than I actually did.

  83. And Steve gently let me know that we started talking about

  84. end times prophecy, and he started talking about the

  85. Millennium. And I was, I'm listening to him.

  86. Talking, that sounded good. I was like, Oh yeah, we, we

  87. believe that too. That's really great.

  88. And he's kind of raising an eyebrows.

  89. I I don't think that's what Adventists believe.

  90. I'm just like, oh. I, it wasn't that hard of a pill

  91. to swallow and that I didn't think I was a Bible expert or

  92. anything like that, but I, I thought I knew more than I

  93. actually did. And I also realized how much I'd

  94. learned, you know, in just three Bible studies and listening to

  95. him as a pastor. In my conversation with him in

  96. that conversation, I didn't say anything about pride or what I

  97. was thinking about or what I thought of him that would have

  98. been rude. And so I just was looking for a

  99. way for the Lord to reveal. Something in the conversation

  100. and in the in the middle of the conversation, as he's talking,

  101. he's completely off the subject. He stops.

  102. He starts talking about humility, and he says, you know,

  103. it's just easy to get a big head when you're a pastor.

  104. And I need to be on guard for those things, and I need to be

  105. careful of that. And just as willingness to say.

  106. I got to watch out for pride was enough for me.

  107. You know, I mean, number one, that's from the Lord.

  108. And #2 this guy, I realized, is just trying to follow the Lord

  109. like I'm trying to follow the Lord.

  110. And neither of us are going to be doing it without making

  111. mistakes. You know, people want to be

  112. around. Humble people, you know, we

  113. actually naturally hope that the humble have success.

  114. You know, we lift them up. We like cheering for the

  115. underdog. The champion gets prideful and

  116. we don't like the champion anymore.

  117. Once he becomes a champion for a while, you know, people allow

  118. the. Influence in their lives of a

  119. humble person. Our success is determined by our

  120. humility. It's not by our spiritual gifts,

  121. it's not by our talents, it's not by our work ethic.

  122. It's really easy to try to outwork people.

  123. But that's not where our success is determined.

  124. It's good. It's not determined by our

  125. knowledge either. Why?

  126. Because without humility, over time, all those things will get

  127. tragically wrecked by pride. You know, they'll all be wasted

  128. and pride will ruin all of it. In John 1, John the Baptist is

  129. asked about his identity and he says, I'm not the Christ.

  130. Are you? The Christ says no.

  131. And that's a humble statement because he knows who he is.

  132. Humility is not just knowing who you are and being who you are,

  133. or it is just knowing those things.

  134. The reason John the Baptist is humble is because the first

  135. thing you need to know to know yourself is Jesus.

  136. Now you need to know Jesus. To know who you are.

  137. John knew who he was, and he knew who he wasn't.

  138. And then when all. Of his followers and disciples

  139. began to leave his ministry and join Jesus's ministry.

  140. John the Baptist humbly said he must increase and I must

  141. decrease. So the main scripture we're

  142. going to be into today, first Peter 5.

  143. Let's take a look at first Peter 5 verses 5 through 7.

    1 Peter 5:5–7

  144. And Peter says likewise. You younger people, submit

  145. yourself to your elders yes, all of you be submissive to one

  146. another and be clothed with humility, for God resists the

  147. proud but gives grace to the. Humble, therefore humble

  148. yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in

  149. due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

  150. It's just kind of interesting that when Peter thinks about

  151. submission and humility, the first thing that comes to mind

  152. is, oh, the young people, they need to remember to submit.

  153. Then he quickly considers that the application is for everyone.

  154. This command be submissive to one another and be clothed with

  155. humility. It applies to everyone for

  156. perhaps especially young men. Peter.

  157. Wasn't mature until he got older.

  158. He knew what it was like to be a young man.

  159. Peter knows the younger people need to find their older people.

  160. That's really what's. Easy admonishing people to do

  161. here you know one young person plus another young person does

  162. not make wisdom it brings passion and it brings you know

  163. volume when young people to get the other not a lot of wisdom

  164. when I was younger I. Found some guys that had been

  165. through some battles in life and I leaned into them and tried to

  166. get everything from them that I possibly could.

  167. They the advice that I received for them, it was extremely

  168. valuable. See the the first part of first

  169. Peter 5 here talks about shepherds and pastors and it's,

  170. you know, for for us, it's like, it's like find your shepherd.

  171. This is what 1 looks like. And so you find your shepherd,

  172. you find the guy that can biblically lead you through your

  173. difficult circumstances that you know you're going to have.

  174. And then the next thing you do is.

  175. You find your flock. You know, who are the people

  176. that the friends that you're going to join in the church, you

  177. need to find people that you're going to build up and you need

  178. to find people that can build you up.

  179. You know, the older guys mentor the middle age guys, the middle

  180. age guys mentor the the younger guys.

  181. And then in that we see which group needs the most humility.

  182. It's the younger guys. They don't have anybody to teach

  183. yet. Not that we can't learn anything

  184. from them, but they especially need to be humble.

  185. And so, Peter says, younger people, submit yourselves to

  186. your elders. To everyone else, Peter says, be

  187. submissive to one another and be clothed with humility.

  188. Being clothed with humility is demonstrated by submission.

  189. This is to put away our own agenda for God's agenda.

  190. This applies to pastors too, Obviously.

  191. It's easy to define submission to authority.

  192. And your pastor. But the submission is actually

  193. collectively to God's will. You know, the pastor and the

  194. elders are just leading people into the will of God.

  195. A bad pastor will lead people in his own will, in his own selfish

  196. desire. But a bad congregation will do

  197. the same thing. They won't submit to the pastor

  198. due to their own selfish will or desire.

  199. And so Peter says, be clothed with humility.

  200. Humility submitting to one another.

  201. Nobody's perfect at this. We all make mistakes.

  202. We offend people when we should probably be more gentle and more

  203. gentle to people when we should probably be a little more

  204. offensive. It's a hard thing to do

  205. sometimes, but our desire. Is to be humble and submissive

  206. to God's will. A person that desires to be

  207. humble and submissive to God will apologize when he realizes

  208. he's made a mistake. Sometimes it takes a while to

  209. figure it out. Peter is saying that's what

  210. everyone should be doing, especially younger people, but

  211. also everyone else submitting to each other.

  212. That phrase be clothed is a rare word that refers to a slave

  213. putting on an apron right before he serves.

  214. Jesus did this before washing the feet of the disciples in

  215. John 13. You know, so when we're thinking

  216. about humility, we want to be clothed in the humility of Jesus

  217. Christ. You know, washing feet was the

  218. job of the lowest servant in that culture.

  219. You know, are you willing to perform the lowest and smallest

  220. services for the sake of Jesus? This is a good thing to take

  221. pride in, you know, doing The Dirty work, you know, men,

  222. you'll be the first guy to do that job that nobody else wants

  223. to do. And when you get there before

  224. the rest. Of the guys you call them girls

  225. and you say you know you what are you doing I beat you to this

  226. job good thing to take pride in are you conscious of.

  227. Your own inability to do anything apart from God, Jesus

  228. said. Without me you can do nothing.

  229. Yeah. What's nothing?

  230. Yeah, nothing. Exactly.

  231. Good job. Most people don't get that.

  232. And we have to have a conversation about what nothing

  233. is. I'm kidding.

  234. Are you willing to be ignored by people?

  235. You. Know when you do The Dirty job

  236. that nobody else wants to do, Will it matter to you when no

  237. one notices? Or will you get irritated when

  238. you don't receive praise for that thing you know I need?

  239. Jesus to do anything of spiritual value, even basic

  240. tasks can can. My service to God can be ruined

  241. by a bad attitude when I'm not relying on the Holy Spirit.

  242. Are you others centered or are you self-centered?

  243. You know, honestly, to some degree I can, I can say that

  244. I'm, I'm negative on all these things.

  245. I can say no, it's all these things.

  246. I, I don't want to do The Dirty job.

  247. I'm going to be upset when I don't get praise for.

  248. It I'm going to be a little irritated when I get nothing in

  249. return. Every once in a while I catch

  250. myself not having the right attitude and so I give it to the

  251. Lord. And then I become really

  252. grateful because God knows all about my bad attitude and he

  253. paid for it anyway through the cross.

  254. And that brings me back to the place where I need to be in

  255. humility, because Jesus just showed me his humility through

  256. the Gospel. I become more submissive and I

  257. become more humble. At the end of verse 5, Peter

  258. quotes Proverbs 334 For God resists the proud, but gives

  259. grace to the humble. The word resist is not a word

  260. that means. God, you know, like passively

  261. ignores you. He passively ignores the proud.

  262. It's a verb that pictures God prepared for.

  263. Battle standing against the proud.

  264. If you pick pride, you're picking a fight with God.

  265. You know, if you build it in pride, God is going to come and

  266. he's going to knock it down. There is one specific time when

  267. God told me that the guy who was making my life card and and

  268. being a really big jerk, you know, God, God explained.

  269. Yeah, I, I. Sympathize.

  270. He's being a really big jerk, but I'm going to deal with it.

  271. And then he said to me, if you go against him, I'm taking his

  272. side. That's your authority and you

  273. need to submit. And if you don't submit, things

  274. are going to go really bad for you.

  275. And I, I had to submit to the authority of God, which was to

  276. submit to my authority, the, the instrument that he picked.

  277. And I had to trust God in faith that I was doing the right thing

  278. because I was young and I was confused over the issue.

  279. I was one of those young people that needed to submit to older

  280. people. And I want to say young, I was

  281. like, oh, 33 years old. But God didn't need me to be

  282. right. That's not what he was trying to

  283. teach me. He was trying to teach me to be

  284. humble so that I could grow. And apparently this was the way

  285. that he wanted to teach me to do it.

  286. But submitting in that moment is still yielding fruit in my life.

  287. Can't imagine where I would ended up if I want to submit it

  288. in that point in time. God would have gone to war

  289. against me if I had decided to plant the flag on my pride in

  290. that situation. Pride causes most of our

  291. problems. I mean, how's.

  292. It going to show. How's it going to go when you

  293. show pride to your wife or your husband or a friend?

  294. You're just going to get pride right back at you because you

  295. reap what you sow. It's not going to be not going

  296. to be a good time. What happens if you show

  297. humility to that? Person your hearts get softened

  298. and then you can start working through the issue because people

  299. start getting a lot more genuine when you show humility.

  300. Humility allows you to take a good look at yourself and ask

  301. what's really going on here, Lord, like, what do I need to do

  302. to reconcile the situation? What do I need to do to behave

  303. more like you in this situation? When you show pride to your

  304. kids, you know then your kids get attitude.

  305. It doesn't work really well. You know when dad shows pride to

  306. his kid, kids gets all mouthy and it's like, oh, you're going

  307. to be mouthy OK, And then then dad gets prideful back.

  308. Then dad double S down the. Pride.

  309. That's not good. If mom has a mockery for one of

  310. her kids, that's going to harden his heart.

  311. He's going to get all ticked off.

  312. He's going to show rebellion. Pride makes arguments go nuclear

  313. and there are some topics that you just can't even bring up

  314. with. People, because of their pride,

  315. you know that things are just going to erupt if you bring that

  316. thing up. God resists the proud.

  317. He opposes pride to the married men here.

  318. You know your your wife is God's daughter.

  319. Your kids are his kids. In first Peter 37, it says

  320. husbands likewise dwell with them.

  321. Your wives with understanding. And that's because he knows we

  322. don't understand giving honor to the wife as to the weaker vessel

  323. and as being heirs together in the grace of life, that your

  324. prayers may not be hindered. If you show pride to your wife,

  325. God will stand against you. And it's certainly, you're

  326. certainly not going to be answering your prayers, is what

  327. he's saying there. In Malachi chapter 2, God says

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  328. he'll reject the offering of a man who deals with his wife

  329. treacherously. How would you respond?

  330. To someone showing pride to your wife, How would you respond to

  331. someone showing pride to your daughter?

  332. I mean, it's standing against that.

  333. That's what the word means. That's what the word word resist

  334. means. That's what God's going to do

  335. with you when you show pride against his daughter.

  336. God will stand against you and it's going to turn into a

  337. disaster. You know, what if somebody shows

  338. humility to your wife? What if somebody shows humility

  339. to your daughter? Well, I'm going to go out of my

  340. way to. Do things for that guy and so

  341. God will shower you with grace. God resists the proud, but gives

  342. grace to the humble. Humility brings grace.

  343. You get good things that you don't deserve when you're

  344. humble. Humility brings heaven down.

  345. Pride brings hell up. You know when you're giving

  346. somebody hell or you're giving somebody.

  347. Pride. That's how that goes.

  348. When you show humility, you're showing them the love of God in

  349. the heart of Jesus. Humility ultimately comes from

  350. the Holy Spirit. But it's interesting that the

  351. Bible says to humble ourselves. This is something we have to do

  352. in us. We have to voluntarily submit

  353. and be humble first. Peter 5-6 the verse 6 it says

  354. therefore humble yourselves. Under the mighty hand of God,

  355. that He may exalt you in due time.

  356. Some people think that going through a disaster or a

  357. difficult circumstances can humble.

  358. People. But that's not the case you.

  359. Know when someone gets a beat in a competition, sometimes they'll

  360. say well they got humbled, but truthfully they probably became

  361. more prideful people. Can either harden their hearts

  362. or soften their hearts when they lose a battle in life when dads

  363. compete with their kids and beat them all the time, there's an

  364. unfair. Advantage there so it can make

  365. the kids bitter and prideful, you know, they'll try to prove

  366. their value then in annihilating their opponents and their pride,

  367. you know, pride just breeds more.

  368. Pride. It doesn't soften their hearts

  369. just because they lost is my point.

  370. It. Actually makes them more

  371. prideful When the marriage fails and there's divorce, it doesn't

  372. mean that you know, people are now humble and everybody learned

  373. their lessons. You have to humble yourself

  374. hopefully before it gets to that point.

  375. God gives grace to the humble. You know, grace and pride are

  376. just eternal enemies. Grace demands that God bless me

  377. in light of what I think I deserve.

  378. God deals with me. Or grace is when God deals with

  379. me on the basis of what's in God, not what's inside me.

  380. You know, your salvation is about God being good, not you

  381. being good. And when pride gets in the way

  382. of that, God mightily opposes it.

  383. You know, pride is the worst sin and it's the one we all suffer

  384. from. Pride was found in Lucifer and

  385. that led to his fall. Pride was what led Adam to.

  386. Sin. And now we all have sin.

  387. Pride. It's something that starts out

  388. really small and we make different names.

  389. For it so that's not so bad sometimes we call it

  390. independence and self-reliance now look I'm.

  391. I'm just as patriotic as anybody, but I'm talking about

  392. independence and self-reliance because you care more about you

  393. than your team. You know you can be, you can't

  394. be independent in your marriage, you can't be self reliant on a

  395. job that requires teamwork, and you certainly can't be

  396. independent and self reliant in a relationship with God.

  397. Some people realize this, so they start modifying their

  398. behaviour. Some people hear the sermon on

  399. grace and humility. And so they say, well, I can act

  400. humble because I know what acting humble looks like, but

  401. they're really not humble. And if you take your eyes off

  402. Jesus while you're trying to fake humility, it's it's going

  403. to go radically bad. However, if you're willing to

  404. give up pride, you you're probably going to be surprised

  405. with how much grace Jesus gives you.

  406. Humility is the key to receiving more grace.

  407. It's the, the way that the, it's, it's, it's the way of the

  408. church. When you, when you're thinking

  409. about climbing the church ladder, it's kind of a

  410. disgusting thing. Like you're going to climb the

  411. church ladder like people climb up in corporate America.

  412. But the lesson of humility teaches us that if you want to

  413. climb the ladder, you aim for the bottom.

  414. That's humility, Peter says. Therefore, humble yourselves

  415. under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due

  416. time. That's Peter encouraging

  417. Christians to be patient. You know, we all want to bear

  418. fruit in our ministries and a relationship, all of our

  419. relationships. Maybe it's to your family.

  420. When you're raising your kids, sometimes it feels like you're

  421. just poured into a black hole and there's.

  422. Nothing coming out yet. You know, I don't see the fruit

  423. yet. Lord, you know what's going on.

  424. I pray with my kids. I'm teaching them the Bible.

  425. I'm surrounding them with Christian influence, but they

  426. act like they don't care, Peter says.

  427. Humble yourself, be patient. Keep doing the things that God

  428. has told you to do. You know, maybe it's a Sunday

  429. school ministry, maybe it's a service ministry, a home Bible

  430. study. Sometimes it's just a service

  431. project. You're building something.

  432. You're doing something at your job.

  433. With with a, you're doing it, showing Jesus how you do it.

  434. That's a ministry. And there are a lot of times

  435. when you're going to do all the right things and you're going to

  436. be in the will of God, but you will not be exalted.

  437. Yet it's going to take some time for that to happen.

  438. You know, nobody knows what you're doing.

  439. The ministry is not growing. You're struggling to get things

  440. off the ground. You know, maybe something's gone

  441. wrong. You know somebody.

  442. Slandered you. Somebody since stopped the

  443. progress of whatever you were trying to do.

  444. Maybe you got injured and that stopped the progress of whatever

  445. you're trying to do, Peter says. Don't get frustrated.

  446. Don't start acting like God owes you something.

  447. That's pride, he says. Remain humble.

  448. God will exalt you in due time. Humble yourselves and at the

  449. right time God will lift you up. Humility is a constant journey.

  450. It never ends. We need it more and it.

  451. Surprises us when we learn that we don't have it.

  452. It's like that in marriage. It's like that in finding a job,

  453. you know, ministry, raising a family.

  454. In 2004, I left California. I took a job to manage a

  455. vineyard in Missouri. And it was a good opportunity to

  456. farm in really adverse conditions and just learn how to

  457. be a better farmer, a godly guy that helped lure me out there.

  458. Once I, I got started and, and he said you should start a

  459. vineyard business. And so I prayed, you know, I was

  460. young in the Lord, definitely immature.

  461. I didn't really know how to how to listen to the Lord

  462. completely, but I didn't pray about the little things.

  463. But this was a big thing, so I prayed about the big thing.

  464. And so I prayed and as I sat in the quiet there, I just felt a

  465. piece of God come over me like this was a confirmation of this

  466. is what I was supposed to do to start this business.

  467. So. It was kind of an awesome thing,

  468. you know, I knew God's will for me.

  469. Now I know what to do. And so I made a business plan

  470. and there was a lot of interest and it looked like it was going

  471. to be lucrative right out of the gate.

  472. But Long story short, everyone backed out at the last minute

  473. with no time for me to react or seek more opportunities.

  474. You know, leaving me with no income.

  475. So I explained the situation to my wife and we prayed.

  476. That's a humble thing to do. And so, and the prayer was just

  477. like, you know, God, if I messed up, if I've been disobedient to

  478. you, let's, let's, let's make this quick and painful, not slow

  479. and painful. Let's lose the house now, get

  480. things right now, start over. Now.

  481. I'll think about how dumb I was, how smart you are, and we'll

  482. just get things right right now. And that was pretty much it for

  483. about 20 minutes. And then the phone rang.

  484. And I just went and answered the phone being exhausted from

  485. prayer, and it was a consulting call and it wasn't $1,000,000

  486. call or anything, but that peace of God was something that I felt

  487. returned in that moment. I just told Jenny, I think God

  488. wants us to go forward with this.

  489. I think that peace and that. Call is something telling us to

  490. go forward and I had two appointments on my work calendar

  491. going into the month of May and they were only going to make a

  492. day's wage at the end of the month.

  493. I only did not work 2 days. That was pretty amazing.

  494. Now I'm looking at the month of June and I've got three

  495. appointments on my calendar at the end of June.

  496. I only did not work. Three days now, I'm getting up

  497. in the morning and many times somebody would just call, you

  498. know, you wouldn't happen to be available today.

  499. Oh, actually, I am available today.

  500. I could. Come and see you right now.

  501. And so that that happened for five consecutive months and that

  502. was just God saying you're not going to be the one that builds

  503. this company. I am.

  504. And everything that you scheduled, everything that

  505. you're doing, I am taking away. This is only going to be me.

  506. It was a pretty amazing time, an intimate time with God where I

  507. was learning how to trust Him. And I was in 2005.

  508. By 2008 the company was flourishing and growing, but I

  509. needed more labour to commit to the large jobs that I wanted to

  510. take on and so I decided it would be a good idea.

  511. This is this is the humble part of the testimony.

  512. Here to break all kinds of laws and take matters into my own

  513. hands because my company was not being exalted the way that I

  514. wanted it to be exalted. And so then I got caught.

  515. To the level where the senior prosecuting attorney from the

  516. state attorney general's office was calling my house.

  517. And my immigration attorney said this is out of my league.

  518. This is really scary. You need a criminal attorney.

  519. Went and got a criminal attorney.

  520. He took every dime that I had and and I was immediately

  521. repentant in the thing. You know the way the whole deal

  522. went down, don't have time to get into all of it, but it was a

  523. set of circumstances where as soon as it happened.

  524. It was like, oh, this is definitely from you.

  525. This isn't just something that happened on accident.

  526. Not that anything does, but in that point in my life, it's.

  527. Just how it felt I I repented. I knew it immediately was from

  528. the Lord. I had two young boys at home.

  529. I had my my wife. And I thought I was going to be

  530. without them for a. Very long time.

  531. I was looking at a minimum sentence of around 20 years.

  532. And so after two months of just kind of being in limbo, my

  533. humble wife cried out to the Lord and confessed that she had

  534. made me her Jesus. You know she was humble to me,

  535. but not to God you. Know she trusted me to take care

  536. of everything and didn't take a stand when I chose to do what I

  537. did. She warned me hey you better not

  538. do this. And then when I didn't listen to

  539. her, she helped me do it. And so she tells the Lord, I

  540. realize I need to follow you, not him.

  541. But I beg you, Lord, will you? Please have mercy on this

  542. situation. The same day.

  543. I wasn't expecting a call, but I get a call from my lawyers and

  544. these guys say we met with the prosecuting attorney and they

  545. aren't going to press any charges.

  546. You're probably still going to have some fines even later on.

  547. We didn't even pay any fines. It was complete mercy.

  548. I asked the attorney why, you know what, what could have

  549. possibly led to this outcome, and he just kind of got out

  550. awkward and said things that didn't make a whole lot of

  551. sense. You know what did?

  552. You say, how did this happen? I don't understand.

  553. And I just knew it was from the Lord.

  554. He didn't have a straight answer for me.

  555. So God answered my wife's prayer at that moment, You know, she

  556. humbled herself before God, and He gave grace.

  557. The business was wrecked, but I could find more work.

  558. I just needed people. I only had one employee at the

  559. time and he was one of those guys, though, that would go do

  560. The Dirty job and call you a girl if he beat you to it.

  561. So that was really helpful. Eventually, through that summer

  562. season, I hired and trained and fired about 60 employees.

  563. None of them could do the work. I'd get him started and

  564. eventually have to let him go and try to find other people.

  565. But we got through the growing season with something to show

  566. for it. We kept things afloat, and then

  567. God presented me with a tremendous opportunity through

  568. an equally amazing alignment of circumstances.

  569. And God made the business even bigger and better than it was

  570. before. Then a year later, in 2009, he

  571. told us to walk away from it. You know, bag it and walk away.

  572. Last year was our best year, so that was a hard thing to do.

  573. But he wanted us to go to Washington.

  574. God revealed that to us and we knew that if we were offered

  575. this job in Washington that we were supposed to take it.

  576. It didn't even matter what the offer was.

  577. And the offer was about half of the income we were making in

  578. Missouri. But we took it because we we

  579. just knew God's will was in it and we had learned some lessons.

  580. So faith is radically increasing and changing, humility changing

  581. and increasing. I don't need money.

  582. I just need to follow the Lord. I was also transitioning out of

  583. the 7th Day Adventist religion at the time, as I mentioned

  584. before, and I found Calvary Chapel where my wife and I

  585. learned the Bible. We picked our shepherd, we found

  586. our flock guys like Nick and ladies like Faye.

  587. And my wife and I learned ministry.

  588. We received amazing mentorship, and I learned how to lead my

  589. family in the Lord. After being in Washington less

  590. than a year, I was called the ministry.

  591. You know, there was a job offer in California and there was

  592. continued opportunity in Washington state.

  593. And so I was praying about those two options and God did this

  594. thing. I'm not that emotional of a guy,

  595. but he broke me. I guess I'm a little more now

  596. than I. Was then, but then definitely

  597. not. He broke me down five times and

  598. I did not know what was going on.

  599. On the 5th time I was exhausted and I just cried out to the.

  600. Lord, you know what is going on here.

  601. What are you doing? And he said you're going to

  602. build a church. Long story really short.

  603. I spent the next 12 years in in volunteer ministry, teaching.

  604. I spent nine of those years in Prosser.

  605. That took us to 2022, when a pastor gave.

  606. Me, his church building, I did three more years of a volunteer,

  607. you know, pastoring at that church and then in 2000. 25 I

  608. lost my job of of 16 years, you know, being a vineyard manager

  609. because the entire industry there is just radically

  610. shrinking. And I didn't know what to do

  611. because my church wasn't big enough to support me yet.

  612. And then it was. And I I still need to have.

  613. A a part time job in to pay the bills and things like that.

  614. But now I'm supported by my church and got opened a door for

  615. me to sit on the Pasco City Council.

  616. The houses where I live in is in Pasco and that has a little bit

  617. of income that supplements where I am.

  618. So that just worked out. And my wife has a part time job

  619. where she prayed Lord. I think it could be a secretary

  620. at Calvary Christian School. She didn't ask anybody, tell

  621. anybody or anything except God and me.

  622. And the principal calls up say, hey, we'd like you to work a

  623. couple days of work at the. Calvary Christian School be a

  624. secretary for us and so God is miraculously providing you know

  625. why am I telling you this? Well, I I was proud and I didn't

  626. need God, you know, to build my business.

  627. That plan failed and then I humbled myself and then God

  628. built up the business. I created my God, created my

  629. business in due time and his power not mine.

  630. Then I got proud. Again.

  631. And God, you know, I said, God, I could do this without you.

  632. And that plan failed, which is a radical understatement.

  633. And then I got humble. Then my wife got humble and he

  634. showered us with grace. After that, we decided it was a

  635. lot better to be humble than to be proud.

  636. And so we fully submitted to God.

  637. My wife and I had another baby, we had a daughter, Julia, and

  638. God LED us to adopt two kids from Columbia in 2013.

  639. We learned a lot about ministry, and we are still learning a lot

  640. about ministry. The most important ministry is

  641. to your family. You know what happens if you're

  642. the leader in your home and someone is in rebellion?

  643. They have all kinds of pride. You know if you answer them with

  644. pride, that's that's going to be a total train wreck.

  645. If you answer them with humility, that's not going to

  646. work either. The prideful person in their

  647. rebellion will probably just eat you for breakfast if you show

  648. them. Humility.

  649. And so you have to employ very disciplined leadership that

  650. involves humility and no pride. But humility alone will not

  651. resolve this issue. You know, there I'm saying that

  652. just because I'm giving a caveat because there there are a lot of

  653. men that need to stand up to their wives and the culture that

  654. we're living in today. And you know you can't tolerate

  655. behaviour in your family that you know is destroying your

  656. family. Stop it.

  657. So that's a different Bible study, but I just want to give

  658. that that caveat, that humility. Is not the answer to rebellion

  659. in your family. It's part of it.

  660. It's a necessary component. When that happens, you need to

  661. stand against the proud like Jesus stands against the proud.

  662. So are you pursuing humility before God?

  663. You know, one thing that God has done in my life to remind me

  664. that I don't deserve anything that I have is that He uses this

  665. number 5 in my life. God made work fall from the sky

  666. for five months. He gave me a job for five

  667. months. He provided for five months.

  668. Then He blessed me with five kids.

  669. That wasn't the plan. We were just answering a call

  670. and then he called me into ministry and he broke me down

  671. five times. And so that's a God saying, I'm

  672. giving you a job that you don't deserve, I'm giving you kids

  673. that you don't deserve, and I'm giving you a ministry that you

  674. don't deserve. God has done a work in me far

  675. beyond, you know, the personal testimony.

  676. I still get mad at myself because I still have feelings of

  677. pride. You know, God doesn't stop

  678. revealing your pride to you. Pride gets revealed.

  679. It's like looking in the mirror. You know you bring your sin to

  680. the light. And God starts dealing with it.

  681. You're looking in the mirror. You're cleaning yourself up.

  682. Things look pretty good now. OK, I'm better.

  683. I look a little bit more like Jesus today.

  684. And then God brings some more circumstances and adversity to

  685. your life, and he brings a bigger light.

  686. And so then you look in the mirror, he goes like, you know,

  687. he's like, Oh no, where'd all this stuff come from?

  688. I didn't know I was there. And he just starts dealing with

  689. it. That was how the Doing Ministry

  690. Well conference went for me. You know, that's how God was

  691. dealing with me when I was there two weeks ago.

  692. Some of you were there. I was mortified for.

  693. About a day at the pride that I sensed in my heart and I learned

  694. again how I just need to be really humble before Jesus and

  695. that Jesus humbled himself for me on the cross.

  696. You know, thankfully I didn't act on my pride and embarrass

  697. myself. You know, I've learned some

  698. things being a Christian for a number of years now.

  699. And being a hypocrite. For a number of years as well.

  700. But I need to, all I needed to do was pray to God.

  701. I mean, he, he is so faithful when you're just like, Lord,

  702. please change my attitude. He's so faithful to do that and

  703. bring you to that place of humility when you humbly ask.

  704. I become overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and hope

  705. because I know that God's going to work out His plan for me.

  706. His plan is the best one. I want God to give me everything

  707. that I receive in my life. I don't want to be going out and

  708. getting stuff for myself because I'll glorify God much better

  709. that way. First, Peter 5 verses 5 through

  710. 7. Let's let's read through it here

  711. and we can add 7. Likewise, you younger people,

  712. submit yourselves to your elders.

  713. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another and be cold with

  714. humility. For God resists the proud but

  715. gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves

  716. under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due

  717. time, casting all your care upon Him.

  718. For He cares for you when you know God's will, but you're

  719. waiting for His timing. That can feel like God doesn't

  720. care about you. And so Peter says God cares for

  721. you, He loves you, you just need to wait on him.

  722. You know when you have anxiety, when you have stress, when you

  723. have trouble, when you have impatience, you just need to

  724. give all of that to the Lord and He will do what's best for you,

  725. casting all your care upon Him, for he cares for you.

  726. Humility can be measured. You can know how humble you are

  727. by this measurement. You can measure it by how many

  728. of your problems you are giving to the Lord.

  729. If you're giving all your problems to the Lord, that's a

  730. lot of humility. But if you try to manage and

  731. worry and solve. Those concerns yourself, that's

  732. pride. Casting is not laying down.

  733. Casting is a really energetic term when it talks about casting

  734. your care upon him, and it doesn't.

  735. Say you like like lay your cares on him.

  736. This is not a something you just kind of do.

  737. It should not be slow and methodical is the point.

  738. You actually throw it away from you.

  739. That's casting. If God wants your burden and he

  740. wants it immediately dumped on him and the faster you get to.

  741. The point where you realize I can't do this on my own, the

  742. faster that burden is cast to God.

  743. He cares for you. Most people don't have a problem

  744. with realizing. And envisioning a good God, the

  745. problem comes. The harder thing to accept is

  746. that God actually cares for you, that He specifically loves you.

  747. Peter, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is reminding

  748. us of the character of God. He loves you and cares for you.

  749. The key to navigating a crisis in the future is humility.

  750. In the present. We're all on a continuum of

  751. humility leading to pride. And so I got an ugly heart just

  752. like everybody else. You know, I'm teaching a study

  753. on humility because God is hilarious.

  754. You know, We're having dinner with Nick and Faye.

  755. Last night, Nick says, what are you teaching on?

  756. I said humility. And they both look at me like,

  757. really, I know, I don't know, it's just what I got.

  758. All I can tell you is I am a proud person seeking humility by

  759. the power of the Holy. Spirit, if you stop seeking

  760. humility, pride will get you. Anytime you get attention for

  761. service or your hard work, you're in a great environment to

  762. cultivate pride, and we all have to be guarded against that.

  763. In times where I acknowledge my pride, I'm listening to the Holy

  764. Spirit and I'm going where He leads me, which is a path to

  765. humility. You know, humility.

  766. It's just an honest understanding of your ability to

  767. serve according to how Jesus directs you through the Holy

  768. Spirit. The key to humility is focusing

  769. on Jesus's humility. Humility says that God is the.

  770. Center of the universe. I am orbiting around God, and

  771. there's plenty of room for people to orbit around God with

  772. me. Pride is obviously.

  773. Putting you in the center of the universe and everybody orbiting

  774. around you. The key is not focusing on your

  775. humility but Jesus's humility. This is Philippians 2 verses 5

    Philippians 2:5–11

  776. through 11. It says let this mind be in you,

  777. which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God did

  778. not consider it robbery to be equal with God.

  779. It just means that Jesus didn't cling to His deity like a robber

  780. clings to his treasure, but made himself of no reputation.

  781. Taking the form of a bondservant and coming in the likeness of

  782. men and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled

  783. himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death

  784. on the cross. Therefore God also has highly

  785. exalted him and given His, given Him the name which is above

  786. every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of

  787. those in heaven, of those on the earth and those under the earth,

  788. and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is

  789. Lord. To the glory of God the Father.

  790. Jesus committed the most humble act, and so he receives the

  791. highest exaltation. Jesus is not fighting for

  792. position here, He is humble unto death.

  793. Without humility, Jesus would have never come to serve us.

  794. In Mark chapter 10, the disciples James and John, they

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  795. ask if they can sit be seated at the right and left hand of Jesus

  796. when he. Reigns and is.

  797. His millennial Kingdom and that really ticked off the other

  798. disciples. That's what happens when we show

  799. pride. You show pride.

  800. Everybody wants to knock you down.

  801. That's everybody's mad about that.

  802. You show humility. Everybody wants to lift you.

  803. Up. But when you are proud, people

  804. want to knock you down. A number of times the disciples

  805. asked Jesus who is the greatest. People who have the ability to

  806. lead. Are typically very driven and

  807. they're always trying to get better.

  808. They're always trying to win. They like competing, that it's a

  809. fun thing. They want to get better.

  810. They want to be the. Best at what they do.

  811. And some of those guys are the types of guys that Jesus picked

  812. for ministry. They're the same way.

  813. Those kind of people, they really need Jesus and they need

  814. his example of humility. If they don't get Jesus and they

  815. start getting prideful, then the wheels come off the cart.

  816. Really quickly, it turns into a really ugly situation.

  817. If they do receive the humility of Jesus, that's a lot of energy

  818. pointed in the right direction. Now, when they ask the question,

  819. Jesus doesn't rebuke their desire for greatness.

  820. He just redirects it and he tells them to serve.

  821. You know, valuing greatness is not necessarily a bad thing.

  822. If they didn't value greatness, they wouldn't be able to value

  823. the greatness of Jesus or the attributes that make Jesus

  824. great. So Jesus responds in Mark 10

    Mark 10:43

  825. verses 43 and 45, he says. Whoever desires to become great

  826. among you shall be your servant, and whoever of you desires to be

  827. first shall be slave of all for. Even the Son of Man did not

  828. become to be, did not come to be served, but to serve and to give

  829. his life a ransom for many. Serving is a great way of

  830. redirecting your energy and desire to be great.

  831. If you want to be great, serve others.

  832. Pride and selfishness, they make others serve us, and it's tough.

  833. Because pride is how we win in the world.

  834. You know, pride is really bad in the Bible, but it is talked

  835. about favorably in the world. You know, we have a whole pride

  836. month, right? You know, we don't have a

  837. humility month and we're going to, you know, and I understand

  838. it's a, it's a sexual morality kind of pride.

  839. We don't have a purity month. We don't, we don't have a parade

  840. where people wear 5 belts to make a point.

  841. And you know, we don't have anything like that.

  842. So, so, So what are some? Things you can do to express

  843. humility. These are 5 actions that

  844. demonstrate humility #1. We pray, you know, pray before

  845. the confrontation, you know, pray before you walk into your

  846. house, you know, you dad's getting home from work, you've

  847. been beaten down by the man or. Whatever's going on, pray before

  848. you walk through that threshold. You know when your spouse gets

  849. upset with you, take the criticism to the Lord and pray

  850. hopefully before you respond. You know if you disagree with

  851. your spouse, pray anyway. Send the Holy Spirit to you.

  852. Argue with your spouse. There's nothing wrong with that,

  853. you know. Take your wife under your arm if

  854. she'll let you, and invite Jesus into the conversation before you

  855. start it. You know, seek His will and pray

  856. from your heart, because that person listening to you pray is

  857. listening to you reveal your heart to God.

  858. It's an act of humility. And if you still can't figure it

  859. out and you know, just keep praying together.

  860. Number two, serve serving expresses humility.

  861. You do the hard work even if no one.

  862. Appreciates it and including including if your wife doesn't

  863. appreciate it you know we always like to do that little chore

  864. around the house and then oh, I did this one little thing and we

  865. have to make sure that she knows about it go find your way go out

  866. of your way to serve and be kind you know do something that makes

  867. the other person's life easier that's.

  868. Service take some stress out of the other person's day #3

  869. humility. Humility gives grace giving

  870. grace you. Know when you're having an

  871. argument with your teenage kid and then you go and fill his gas

  872. tank. That's that's grace.

  873. You know, take the wife to dinner.

  874. You know when you know you've got to have a tough conversation

  875. with the kids, You don't do something, eat dinner, eat

  876. dessert first, do something. It just kind of just kind of

  877. lightens. Everything when you show grace

  878. #4 apologize, saying I'm sorry, it's my fault.

  879. That can radically change the trajectory of the relationship.

  880. Don't give the legal. Briefing about how right you

  881. are. Don't defend yourself.

  882. It never works because it's pride.

  883. Just apologize for the things that you did that were wrong and

  884. forgive the things that the other person did that was wrong.

  885. If they don't ask for forgiveness, move on.

  886. You know, if you're getting bullied because the prideful

  887. person is taking advantage of your humility, let them know,

  888. hey, when you do this, when you say this, this is how I feel.

  889. And as opposed to saying you know you're a terrible person,

  890. you don't have, you know you. Have pride.

  891. You need to say sorry #5 listen. Don't articulate your response

  892. while they talk. Seek to understand.

  893. Ask them to explain it again. Repeat what you are hearing.

  894. Ask them. Ask them if you understand, you

  895. know. Is this correct?

  896. You know if you've listened and the other person is telling you

  897. no, you're you're still not getting it.

  898. Go back to the first four things.

  899. Pray, serve, give grace, apologize.

  900. So the five examples of humble actions, Pray, serve, give

  901. grace, apologize. Listen, you won't be able to do

  902. those things without some measure of humility.

  903. Those are humble actions. But what if you're really not

  904. humble? I mean, these actions are the

  905. result of having some humility, but how do you actually get more

  906. humility? And this is probably the most

  907. important part of the Bible study here.

  908. If I want you to walk away with anything, it's it's the last

  909. kind of closing of the Bible study here.

  910. How do you get more? Humility because when you break

  911. down humility and pride in the Bible, you basically get these

  912. three principles that show up. And the first one is that you

  913. need to desire to spiritually grow, that you should desire to

  914. grow spiritually in the love of God and seek humility.

  915. When you stop growing, it's due to pride.

  916. You know, pride says I know everything that I want to know

  917. about this thing. You know I'm going to stay here

  918. because I've made it to the top. Or I'm satisfied with what I

  919. know or what I'm doing, so why should I do more?

  920. Paul writes after being saved. For 30 years and leading the

  921. ministry of the church. He says this in Philippians 3

    Philippians 3:12–14

  922. verses 12 through 14. Not that I have already attained

  923. or am already perfected, He's saying.

  924. I'm not the picture of Christian maturity or humility, but I

  925. press on that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has

  926. also laid hold of me. You know, I know Jesus has more

  927. for me, so I'm pressing on to go get it.

  928. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended He has an

  929. apprehended humility or spiritual maturity.

  930. But one thing I do know, you know, this is what I have

  931. apprehended. This is one thing I do

  932. understand. Forgetting those things which

  933. are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.

  934. We make a lot of mistakes in our pride, but you can't give up,

  935. you know, forget about your past sins, receive forgiveness from

  936. Jesus and move forward. He says, press toward the goal

  937. for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  938. In second Timothy 4, Paul writes from prison.

  939. This is at the end of his life. He's about to be beheaded.

  940. I think he understands that this is his last stop here.

  941. And he writes to Timothy and he says.

  942. Luke is the only one who's still with me.

  943. Bring Mark. I have use for him.

  944. I sent to Caicus, to Ephesus. But Timothy, when you come bring

  945. the books and he says especially the parchments, you know, Paul

  946. still wants to grow. You know, he still wants to have

  947. those moments where he reads the Scripture.

  948. He says, wow, I've read this 100 times and I never saw that

  949. before. He wants to continue to grow.

  950. The gap between what we teach and the way that we act should

  951. always be narrowing. It should never be widening.

  952. We can't be deceived by the temptation to measure our

  953. spiritual maturity based on what we know you know, It's actually

  954. based on how much knowledge is applied.

  955. So to increase humility, you need to desire to grow

  956. spiritually. The second thing is that you

  957. need to be teachable, express a willingness to be taught.

  958. Apollos is a great example of that in Acts 18.

  959. I'm going to read to you Acts 18 verses 24 through 28.

    Acts 18:24–28

  960. It says now a certain man named Apollos, born at Alexandra

  961. Xandra. He's from Egypt, an eloquent man

  962. and mighty in the Scriptures came to Ephesus.

  963. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being a

  964. servant in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of

  965. the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.

  966. Apollos is a he has expert knowledge of the Bible, and he's

  967. probably inspired by John the Baptist.

  968. We know that he knows about the ministry of John the Baptist.

  969. But apparently he's been living under a rock, maybe all the way

  970. back in Egypt, in some part of the world where he did not know

  971. that Jesus came and died and was resurrected, Verse 26 says.

  972. So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue, and Aquila and

  973. Priscilla heard him. They took him aside and

  974. explained to him the way of God more.

  975. Accurately, you can even tell like the way that Luke writes

  976. this, this is a sensitive situation.

  977. Apollo's had to humble. Himself to receive their

  978. teaching he's there's a a humble couple in the audience listening

  979. to Apollo speak. And they say we need to talk to

  980. you about your teaching. And Paul says, really, Are you

  981. guys teachers? Well, no, we're we're tent

  982. makers. OK, well, what do you have to

  983. say? Well, we need to explain that

  984. your message is not quite. It needs to be more accurate.

  985. There's some things that you. Need to know, verse 27 says.

  986. And when he desired to cross to Akaya, the brethren wrote,

  987. exhorting the disciples to receive.

  988. Him, and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had

  989. believed through grace, for he vigorously refuted the Jews,

  990. publicly showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the

  991. Christ. And so if Apollos doesn't humble

  992. himself, his ministry stops to growing, and so does he.

  993. But now, because he humbled himself, the disciples are

  994. telling the. Other disciples, they said you

  995. need to receive this guy. He can.

  996. He can explain the gospel as well as anyone.

  997. He's teachable. Teachableness is a mark of

  998. maturity. So humility is to desire growth,

  999. desire spiritual growth #2 be. Teachable.

1000. And the third one is probably the one that a lot of us get

1001. hung up on. Let God pick the teacher.

1002. That's the third one. Be willing to be taught by

1003. whatever instrument God chooses to use.

1004. It's easier. To be humble and humble yourself

1005. before God because he's God. He.

1006. He's in control of everything and is all powerful and knows

1007. everything. We have a natural fear of God,

1008. so being humble towards God just kind of makes sense.

1009. But what about to the man that God wants to use to teach you

1010. and. What about your pastor?

1011. You know, are you going to try to outsmart your pastor or are

1012. you going to humble yourself before your pastor?

1013. You know, sometimes submitting to a pastor is easy and

1014. sometimes it's not. You know, pastors have a lot of

1015. things to share and we look at them as leaders and so humbling

1016. ourselves are not that bad. But what about if you have this

1017. person in authority that that has not earned your respect yet?

1018. You know what if you know more than the person in authority,

1019. maybe you know a lot more. Apollos didn't know anything

1020. about Akula and Priscilla. He knew way more about the

1021. Bible. He has expert knowledge and can

1022. explain explain the scriptures all pointing to the coming of

1023. this Messiah. He's going to come.

1024. He's going to die, Apollos. And then?

1025. So like, you know, he doesn't know.

1026. He was a way better teacher than they were, yet his ministry

1027. became more fruitful because he humbled himself.

1028. Probably a bit of a difficult pill to swallow.

1029. For Apollo's, you know, Okola and Priscilla, they're not

1030. teachers. But they know that Apollos's

1031. teaching is irrelevant and radically outdated because he

1032. didn't know about the most amazing event in world history.

1033. And so if we're seeking humility, we can't just be

1034. willing to be taught by those who excel and know and

1035. experience more than we do, but by those who know less and have

1036. experienced less than us. We can't say God, I received the

1037. lesson, but I have the problem with the person that you're

1038. using. To teach me the lesson, it's

1039. actually a lot. Easier to just not care about

1040. it, not care about who God uses. It's a ton of work.

1041. It's a waste of energy. Pride is always a waste of

1042. energy. And you're just fighting the

  1043. teacher. It's it's don't fight the

1044. teacher that God picks. So you desire spiritual growth.

1045. You're teachable and you let God pick the teacher.

1046. Pride will RIP away. Humility and kill your ministry.

1047. It's so dangerous because it's so well hidden.

1048. You know, sometimes the prideful guy gets a pass.

1049. It's not this grievous sin like you see in some other

1050. situations. And when we give that guy the

1051. free pass, it turns out to be a train wreck later on because

1052. nobody stopped it. Then it's too late.

1053. Pride is the most dangerous thing because once it gets

1054. established, we become too proud to recognize it.

1055. Humility is undervalued and ignored in the culture, but it's

1056. the quality that makes the church and you attractive to the

  1057. world. It's humility.

1058. We all love the humble guy. Humility pleases God.

1059. It sets us free from pride. I'd never be where I am without

1060. continually practicing humility and choosing to continually

1061. practice humility. Humility determines where your

1062. spiritual maturity is going to end.

1063. And the ultimate way that God tells us to remain in humility

1064. is to remind people of the gospel.

1065. The gospel is that God made you to have a relationship with Him.

1066. But we do things that are wrong. We fail to do things that we

1067. know are right every day. And so God loves you.

1068. He made you for a relationship much like a a husband and a wife

1069. will decide to have. A child, they want to share

1070. their lives with that child, a different kind of relationship

1071. than with anybody else. They want it to be a family.

1072. That's what God wants to do with you.

1073. He wants to bring you into his family.

1074. And then we have this sin problem where?

1075. When we're like the only species on the planet that knows right

1076. and wrong and continually chooses to do what's wrong, and

1077. there's something radically wrong with us.

1078. And we sin, and then we can't stop sinning, even though we

1079. know it's wrong, it's a curse and we have no hope because we

1080. understand that people who do things that they know are wrong

1081. deserve a punishment for those things.

1082. And so we are without hope, sinning and continually sinning

1083. and waiting for judgement. And So what God does is he

1084. writes himself into human history.

1085. Jesus comes to the earth, God the Son, always teaching, always

1086. loving, always giving. He came to reveal God to us.

1087. And then he goes to the cross after living a perfect life and

1088. dying a sinner's death. He bore the wrath of God in our

  1089. place. We did not.

1090. He did not deserve the wrath of God.

1091. We did. We're the ones doing things that

1092. we know are wrong. But he went to the cross in our

1093. place, suffering the wrath from the of the Father in our place.

1094. Then he died. He was buried.

1095. He rose again on the third day according to all the scriptures

1096. that foretold He would do, so that when you receive Him, He

1097. brings you into relationship and you receive eternal.

1098. Life He comes back and he says I love you, I've always loved you,

1099. I'll never stop loving you. All I want is a relationship.

1100. With you and and that gospel and we receive eternal life.

1101. We get heaven, we begin living our eternal lives now we get the

1102. Holy Spirit. Everything changes and that

1103. brings us to a place of humility where we can humbly go suffer

1104. for Christ, serve Christ, love him, do battle for him, lose

1105. battles for him. We don't care.

1106. We're just doing what his will is and and we're humble when we

1107. do it because of what he did for us.

1108. Let's pray Lord Jesus, we love you and again Lord, we thank you

1109. for the tremendous sacrifice that you made for us.

1110. Lord, it was this ultimate sacrifice where there's nothing

1111. we can do to to. Trump, what you did, you just

1112. did it, and it's the most. Amazing act, you leaving your

1113. place in heaven to humble yourself, become becoming a man

1114. here. And Lord, we're so grateful

1115. because you saved us. You saved us from hell.

1116. We are eternally grateful and we just give all of our lives to

1117. you. Lord, we want to be filled with

1118. your Holy Spirit to be poured into us so that we can go out

1119. and pour on to other people around us.

1120. Lord, I pray that you bring great blessings to this church

1121. and to this ministry. Lord, we know you're going to do

1122. it through humility. Thank you Jesus, we love you,

  1123. Lord, Amen.
