Road to Resurrection part 3 - Jed Hill

Now let's listen to this week's message.

And so I am just really honored to bring you the word this morning.

I believe I have a word this morning that might even make a Catholic shout.

And so we're in Holy Week, as you guys know this is Palm Sunday, that they were all yelling

Hosanna!

Hosanna!

And Hosanna means save us!

Save us!

Everybody loves a Savior, but when it comes to the Lord part, they wanted to crucify

Him.

And so two weeks ago we started this series.

The Road to Resurrection.

And the Road to Resurrection, as we can see in Jesus' footsteps, the Road to Resurrection

is paved by rejection.

They rejected the chief cornerstone.

They rejected to the one who came to save and deliver His people.

And so when Jesus came in on a donkey, we went through that first week that He came

in on a donkey which symbolized humility and signified peace.

That He didn't come to condemn the world, but He came to save the world, that through

His Son we might be saved.

And then we read, this was a Sunday, and then Monday He goes into the temple.

And He flips the tables.

And we talked last week, are you sitting at a table Jesus would flip?

We got to examine that in our own lives, and we know when Jesus cleared out the temple,

after it was cleared out, things started happening.

Healings started to happen.

Blind eyes were open.

The children, since the religious priests wouldn't cry out, Hosanna, Jesus hijacked

the mouth of children, and children cried out, Hosanna.

How many people know that Jesus will get His praise, whether He's going to get

it out of children or He's going to get it out of rocks?

If you won't praise Him, He'll get something else to praise Him, amen?

Because that's why we were created.

You were created to worship Him, to praise Him.

And so we walked through that, the cleansing of the temple.

And then on Wednesday, Tuesday was a day of sacrifice.

We read that Mary, she broke the jar of fragrance over Jesus.

She worshiped Jesus with her fragrance.

The oil, they said it was 20 denarii, which is like a year pay.

And I can imagine, you know, Jesus coming in, that when He went to the cross, He smelled

her worship dripping down His face.

The oil she poured over His head, He smelled that day on the cross.

And then Wednesday was a pretty quiet day.

Wednesday, they think that this is when Judas went in and betrayed Jesus for the

Thirty Shekels.

But then we get to Thursday, and Thursday is where Jesus has the Last Supper.

And He tells the disciples, He says, go and prepare a place.

There'll be a certain somebody that's going to have an inn and an upper room for us

to partake in the Festival on Unleavened Bread.

And this new covenant that's about to take place at this dinner is about to change

the world.

And so in Matthew 26, Matthew 26 is where we're going to be at this morning.

You know, it says that they were sitting at a table, and if you look at Da Vinci's

picture, Leonardo Da Vinci had this painting, it's a very significant painting.

And this painting is of the 12 disciples and Jesus at the Last Supper.

And as we look at this, it's not a true painting, right?

It is a painting, but it isn't a lot of facts that Da Vinci didn't get right.

You know, none of the disciples were old.

All of them were in their late teens, early 20s.

But this is right after Jesus says, one of you will deny Me.

It would be better for you to be dead than to deny Me.

Right when He said that, this is when He captured what the disciples must have been

doing, as they were all saying, not I, Jesus.

Not me.

I would not deny You.

But you look at this, we look at the disciples, we look at all the people sitting here.

And how many people actually did deny Jesus?

Before and after, during this, and so all of them were wondering who would be denied.

But ultimately, I was looking at this, and I wanted to break down.

We hear about these 12 disciples, we know that they followed Jesus, we know that Jesus

empowered them, just like He's empowered us to go lay hands on the sick and heal

the sick and to drive out demons and all this different stuff.

But the 12 disciples that He used weren't perfect people.

That He used the imperfect people, He uses broken people.

And what Jesus did with these 12 disciples, I mean, He flipped the world upside down.

That these 12 disciples, He flipped the world upside down, and so as we go through these

12 disciples, Jesus has a tendency of picking nobodies, turning them into somebodies in

front of everybody.

And if He could do that with 12 and change the world, what could He do with Bridge

Church Greenbrier, that we get about 500 here on a Sunday, we could turn this

city upside down for Jesus.

We could reach our communities, we could go to the darkest places in our community,

we could tear this city upside down and turn it to Jesus.

They said there's going to be a great falling away at the end times, but how about we make

it a great coming back, too?

That's up to us, if we're willing to sit at the table.

And so as we sit here, we look at all the disciples, you know, I'll run through

the disciples real quick.

How many people in here could name all 12 disciples right now?

Well, crickets, I love it, I love it.

Okay, there's like, I see that little hand back there, maybe me, I don't know.

But we're going to run through the 12 today.

I want you to be confident.

That's why the Bible says, He says, being confident in this, like, when you know the

Bible, you're unashamed.

That's why it says, put on the belt of truth.

How many people know when you don't have a belt on, your shame's going to show?

Yeah, come on.

And so that's why I want you guys to be empowered, I want you guys to know the word

and not be ashamed.

And so we'll look at Matthew, Matthew is in the picture and Matthew, as we know, Matthew

was a tax collector.

And in the Bible, it says there's sinners and there's tax collectors, like tax collectors

have their own bracket of sin, that's how bad they were.

They were the ones that would, you know, actually Matthew was a Jew, but he turned

his back on his own people to collect tax money for the Roman Empire.

So he was hated.

And we have Matthew and then we have Thomas, everybody knows Thomas was known for his doubting

Thomas and Thomas was the one when Jesus died that he said, I will not believe unless

I see the nail marks in his hands and the, if I could put my finger in his side.

And so we know Thomas is doubting Thomas.

We have the brothers, James and John, they're also known as the son of Zebedee.

Like they were people who were a little prejudice, I want to say, you know, they,

they didn't like the Samaritans.

They wanted to call down fire from heaven to kill the Samaritans.

They also were, you know, James and John also argued for position in heaven.

Like they wanted to be seated in heaven next to Jesus and they, they were always

arguing over, over position.

And then we have Simon the Zealot, who he was like a terrorist.

He was, he was the one that would, they would form a group.

They had this group, the Zealots, and they would go in and, and every time they saw

Romans, they would go in and kill him.

With swords, they would go in and stab him.

And so he was a murderer.

He was a terrorist.

We have Philip, who, who was lacking in his confidence.

Philip was the one who kind of had a full, he kind of struggled to believe in

Jesus.

He struggled to believe in all the things that Jesus could do.

And then we have Andrew.

Andrew was another doubter.

You know, Andrew was the one at defeating the 5,000.

He wanted to dismiss the 5,000 saying, Jesus, listen, there's a lot of mouths

to feed and I know that we ain't got enough money to do it.

And so he kind of doubted Jesus and Jesus said, no, no, no, go get the boy.

Go get, go, go get the two loaves and the fish and watch what I do.

And we also have Bartholomew.

Bartholomew is also known as Nathaniel in the Bible.

And so, and we have another person who's a little racist.

You know, Bartholomew, whenever Philip came to Nathaniel, he said, he, he said that

we have found the one that Moses was talking about, the teacher of the law, Jesus of

Nazareth and Nathaniel Bartholomew, he responds back.

He said, no, not Nazareth.

Can anything good come from there?

How many people ever doubted like in your family, you, you know, you're like, I don't

know.

I don't think anything good could come from here or your, your city.

Like I don't know if anything good really could come from Chesapeake.

And so it's the, it's the doubting and all these, all the disciples, they were

imperfect people.

And then we have Peter who always spoke before thinking Peter was hot headed.

Peter, Peter was another one who denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed.

And he's going to say this in this passage.

And so Peter denied.

And then we have Judas.

Judas sold Jesus out, denied Jesus, sold him for 30 seconds of silver.

And then what happened?

What's the difference though between Judas and Peter?

Both of them denied Jesus.

Judas, one led to death, the other one led to repentance.

That was the difference that when you repent of your sins, he's faithful and just to forgive

us of our sins, it cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

And so Judas didn't want to repent.

He sold Jesus out.

I'm sure if Judas would have went to Jesus and said, I'm sorry, you think Jesus would

have held a grudge?

No, it's not his character.

That's not what he would have done.

But Judas refused to repent.

And there's some of us here today.

You know, we see the table and we're wondering why, you know, we have a seat at the table.

We've accepted Jesus into our lives and we have a seat at this table.

And just like the disciples, we're not perfect.

We're broken people in a broken world.

But we have a seat at the table where we always complain like, I don't hear from God.

I'm never full.

Well, it's kind of hard to be full on the Holy Spirit when you're busy snacking on sin.

And it's not until we get rid of the sin in our life that we're willing to confess

it, that it causes a void that the Holy, listen, Jesus fills every gap in your life.

Every void ever since the beginning of the time in Genesis when he created the heavens

and the earth and they were with void, he has the capacity to fill every void in your life.

The problem is we haven't filled up ourselves and God can't pour in because you're

already full on something else.

And so we sit here and we see this, it's powerful to know that I have a seat at the

table and what the table represents here and Jesus is about to make a new covenant

saying listen, y'all don't have to sacrifice bulls, lambs, and goats and do all this

anymore that I am the sacrifice, that my body is going to be broken, I am going

to bleed, and it's going to be for you, for the forgiveness of sins.

And I'm so happy that Psalms 23 tells us, he says that I have prepared a table,

come on, where are my old Christians at in here?

You know about this, let's lay this out loud.

I think you need to speak this over your life today.

Psalms 23, you prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies.

Come on, you anointed my head with oil, my cup runneth over, surely goodness and mercy

will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell.

Come on, somebody say I will.

That means you have a choice that whether you're going to dwell in the house at the

table or you're going to get up and you're going to leave the table.

My wife, she's a great cook and we've made this new covenant, I'll say, with our family

because we grew up in families that didn't sit at the kitchen table.

And so we've been sitting at the kitchen table and what happens at the kitchen table

is really amazing.

It really is, you know, if anybody eats at the kitchen table, you know, conversations

happen at the kitchen table.

You know, sometimes forgiveness happens at the table.

You know, the truth is spoken at the table, that relationships are developed at the table.

So while my wife and I are sitting at the table, we talk, we put away the devices.

Come on, somebody.

Yeah, why don't you try that next time you go to the table?

Get rid of the distractions at the table.

And we get rid of the distractions and we start to have conversations.

You know, the lack of communication always leads to frustration and so I don't get as

frustrated no more.

Why?

Why?

Because I bring my communication to the table.

That when you come to the table with Jesus, there is freedom at the table.

There is forgiveness at the table.

There is a covenant at the table that washes all my sins away.

Come on, what washes my sins away?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

It's the blood of Jesus that has forgiven me.

It's the blood of Jesus that has washed all my sins away.

What can make me whole again because I'm broken?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus and he poured his blood out for you and me.

But as he sits at this table, he sits at the table and the Bible says in Matthew

26, Matthew 26, it says he took the bread.

So it means he grabbed the bread, he took the bread.

He gave thanks, which means he blessed the bread.

The Bible says he broke the bread and he gave the bread to the disciples.

The bread that he gave, which is also the bread that he broke, which is also the

bread that he blessed, which is also the bread that he took.

You see, when he takes over your life, he'll bless your life.

But the same hands that bless your life are the same hands that must be trusted

when your life's shattered in pieces.

I'm talking like when the devil's taking his best shot at you, you got to trust

that you're in the hands of God.

Come on, somebody.

The Bible actually says that I am not just in Jesus' hands, but I'm in God's

hands as well.

Yeah, that I'm in his hands and there's not a devil in hell that can pluck me

from his hands.

When I'm seated at the table, listen, I love the fact that my name is written

down in glory, and yes, this seat is mine.

Oh, yes, it's mine.

And guess what?

Your name is written down there too.

Whether you accept the invitation or not, your name is written on this seat.

You know, I fly all the time, and, you know, when I fly, I come in,

and I don't know why they do this to me.

I think it's God humbling me because he opposes the proud,

but shows favor to the humble.

But I always get stuck in the middle seat.

I do, and I get stuck in the middle seat.

But this always happens to me that when I come in, and I sit down,

like, it's always open.

The window seat is always open.

I'm like, favor, favor, blessings follow me.

But no, and I'll be sitting there, and I'll take, not my seat,

but I'll take someone else's seat, and I'm sitting there,

and I'm watching everybody coming in the plane.

Like, I'm watching them, and they're looking at the ticket,

and they're looking up, and they're looking at the ticket.

And it always happens to me, it's the last person that shows up on the plane

right before the doors close, and they'll come walk in,

and they're looking, and I'm like, I know they ain't coming all the way down

to E37.

Here they are looking, and they're looking,

and they're looking up, and they're looking down.

And sure enough, they'll come right in my seat and say,

excuse me, sir, you're sitting in my seat.

And I can't argue with them.

Why?

Because their name is on the ticket.

Can I just tell you each and every one of us

have an invitation that your name is on this seat,

and Jesus is just waiting for you to come fill this seat

and know that this seat is mine?

Oh, yes, it's mine.

That it don't matter who thinks they're sitting in my seat.

No one can have my seat.

I could come in and claim my seat because my name is on the ticket.

I just need to receive the invitation.

Oh, and the Bible says in verse 25, though, it says that he took the cup.

Oh, this is real.

Oh, this is real apple juice.

No, no, no, it's what is this baby cranberry juice?

And so when the Bible says he he took the cup in like manner.

He took the cup, and when he had given thanks to the cup,

he gave it to them, saying, drink from it, all of you.

That means everybody.

That means the people you don't like.

Come on, everybody.

He says, this is my blood of the covenant.

This is a new covenant saying you don't have to sacrifice things

that I am the sacrifice.

I am the forgiveness of sins that my blood is spilt out

so you could be forgiven and set free.

He says, which is poured out for many.

For the forgiveness of sins.

Wait, why did I say all?

Because not all receive him,

that Jesus died for your maybe,

that maybe you'll receive him and be forgiven of your sins.

Maybe you'll confess your sins and maybe you won't.

I died for you to be forgiven, but maybe you won't.

Receive me.

And that's his will is that none should perish,

but all have everlasting life.

And then when he's taking the cup and I just the blood

is for the forgiveness of sins, and when you sit at the table.

Come on, somebody.

When you sit at the table of God, the blessings that come out,

that I'm covered.

I don't know who needs to hear that, that when you're sitting at the table,

like when he pours the blood out for you, it's covered.

Everything you do is covered.

That means there's no boundaries, just like at this table.

It's pouring this way. It's pouring that way.

The blessings will come this way.

The forgiveness of the blood covers me and I am forgiven.

What can wash away my sins?

The blood of Jesus does that.

And since we have a seat at the table,

since we have a seat at the table, you and I have a responsibility.

We also have a responsibility

that once we accept this invitation at the table, we have a responsibility.

And we refine that responsibility in Hebrews.

In Hebrews, it tells us there's a responsibility that you and I have.

But like as we sit at every table, what is the

what's like the number one thing you're sitting in here?

If you're on a we'll see people who aren't even on diets.

What's usually served first at the table?

Salad. Come on, somebody.

And what's the number one ingredient in salad?

Lettuce. Come on.

And so I want us to turn into Hebrews.

Go to Hebrews. Go to Hebrews 10 19.

We got the lettuce, baby.

Come on. I didn't put radishes and pickles in here, but I just did lettuce.

And so he says, Therefore, since you have a seat at the table,

he says, Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have confidence

to enter the most holy place by the blood of Jesus,

by this new and living way opened for us through the curtain.

That means the veil.

When Jesus died, the veil that covered the Ark of the Covenant

was ripped from top to bottom that you and I have access to the kingdom.

You and I have full access and we can come before the throne boldly.

I'm so happy that when I pray to Jesus, it isn't my first time anymore,

that I could go before boldly. Why?

Because I see them do something before and I know he'll do it again.

That God didn't run out of miracles when he gave me one last month,

that he's still handing out miracles today.

But the thing about us, some of us, we come before the throne real timidly.

It's because of our lack of faith.

It might it be that God cannot do what he wants to do in your life

because of your lack of faith.

You went back to when he went back to his hometown in Nazareth,

the Bible says it's the only time he could not perform miracles.

Why? It says because of their lack of faith.

What have you been believing God for?

But your faith has not let you believe for.

And so we come into this.

And so the number one ingredients in in in a salad.

This will be like a biblical diet for you guys. You ready?

Now that we have a seat to the table, he says in verse 21, he says,

Let us come on somebody.

Let us draw near to God with sincere heart,

with a sincere heart and with full assurance

that the faith brings that I know when I go to God, I come to him in faith.

I know that he would, he says, having he says,

having sprinkled your hearts and cleansed your hearts.

That means before you come to God, you better cleanse yourself.

That means you better get rid of all unrighteousness.

The Bible says the second second chronicle 714,

if my people who are called by my name would humble themselves,

turn from their wicked ways, oh, then I'll hear them from heaven.

The reason why God has not heard you from heaven is because you refuse

to cleanse yourself and you refuse to come to him in humility and maturity.

I want God to hear me, and so I have to constantly,

even as a pastor, I have to ask forgiveness of my sins every single day.

Every day, he says, even if you thought it is as if you've done it.

I'll train somebody.

And so there's the part, so he says, let us and then in verse and, you know,

we look at that and it's like it's the blood, man.

I just love the blood of Jesus because it's this confession of sins.

And in Isaiah 118, he says, Come now,

let us come on, settle the matter.

Let us settle the matter.

Come on. We got something to settle today.

We let us settle the matter, says who?

Not your pastor, says the Lord.

He says, though your sins are like scarlet, though your sins are nasty.

Come on. I don't know what your sin looks like, but mine was pretty nasty.

I was busted down, beat down and disgusted by my sin.

But he says, though your sins were like scarlet,

they have been made white as snow, though they were red as criminals.

They are they shall be like wool, the white wool.

What? I just I love that fact, knowing that

he'll forgive me,

that I don't have to walk around with the burden I've been carrying,

that I've been forgiven, I've been bought at a price.

I'm invited to the party.

I love it because you look at,

you know, we we have these birthday parties and stuff like that.

You know, you ask your kids, like, who do you want at the party?

Caleb just had a birthday.

I don't know if he had a party, but but he had a party.

So he got to ultimately invite people to the party.

But guess who had the final say who came to the party?

The ones who paid for the party.

And can I just tell you

this party that we're getting invited to, it's going to be in heaven.

Jesus paid the price.

So he decides who gets to enter the party.

And he wishes that all,

all, none should perish, but all have eternal life,

that all of us would accept this, this this ticket.

All of us would accept this and be able to enter into heaven

boldly, knowing without a shadow of a doubt.

That's the second let us.

He says, let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering.

That means stop second guessing your salvation.

You wonder why you're not going because you're guessing.

You wonder why you're not guessing because you're guessing

and you don't you're not going to go anywhere if you keep guessing.

I don't know. I wonder if I'm saved.

Pastor, if you knew my thoughts.

It's not your thoughts that keep you from your salvation.

But once you get saved, I think you guys need to know once I'm saved,

I know without a shadow of a doubt

that I'm saved.

There's not a devil in hell that can take my salvation away.

Somebody shout, I'm saved.

I'm saved when I'm happy.

I'm saved when I'm mad.

I'm saved when I'm blessed.

I'm saved when I'm broken.

I'm saved in the pit.

I'm saved in the palace.

Whether feast or famine, baby, I'm saved.

And there's not a devil in hell that can take my salvation away.

And that's why he says, do not waver.

Do not waver.

Go to Hebrews 10 says, do not waver the second lettuce.

Hold fast to confession.

Next one. There we go.

That's it right here.

He says, let us consider one another.

The last one.

So now that we're sitting at the table, guess what?

It's not just about you, Ashlyn.

It's not just about you.

He says, let us consider one another

and one another in order to stir up love and good works.

Not forsaking the assembling together.

Because when we come together, we're able to exhort each other.

When we come together, when we see someone,

when we see someone hurting, we're able to love on them

and bless them and pray for them.

When we come together in unity, for one thing,

we're able to lift each other up.

Hey, I see you're hurting right now, but I don't want to see you hurting.

So what am I going to do?

I'm going to lift you up and we're going to lay hands

and we're going to pray for people.

That's what we do.

We anoint him with oil and we pray for him,

because I don't know about you, he's given me the authority

that come on, that things have to bow at the name of Jesus,

not because of the name of Jed, but the name of Jesus.

When I when I say the name of Jesus, things have to go.

I just get so excited.

So don't and do it even more as you see the day approaching.

Do it even more.

As you see the day approaching.

I don't know, guys, I know that Jesus is coming back.

I'm not going to tell you when, because I don't know when.

But I know that I'm going to start preparing myself.

I know I have a seat at the table.

I know I'm not going to waver from my faith,

but I'm going to walk fully in my faith.

I know that I'm going to love the hell out of people.

Because we have a lost and dying world that's headed there

until they see the love that's shown through you and I.

That if we would stop saying, oh, I'm the salt and the light of the world.

Yes, you are, but it's not a compliment.

It's a responsibility.

That I have to go and be the salt and the light.

It's a responsibility.

When I sit at this table, it's a responsibility that I hold.

You know, I just.

In Second Samuel, now I'm going to end with this.

In Second Samuel nine, we have King David

and King David replaced Saul.

And Saul and Jonathan, his son, died in battle.

And David was anointed to be the next king.

And so David made a promise, a covenant saying that

anybody from Saul's family that I'm going to take care of

with some time had passed and David got reminded of this covenant.

And so he asked one of his servants.

He's like, Listen, is there is there any family from Saul that I could bless?

Because I want to keep my promises.

Is there any family?

Is there any, where are they at?

And they said, well, there's this one guy,

M'shibiphath, there's this one guy, he's Jonathan's son.

So he's the prince's son.

David said, he said, go get him.

And so the thing about M'shibiphath, like he was, his feet were paralyzed.

Because when the king died, it was back then they were they were savage.

So back then, they used to kill everybody who was when it

when a new king came in, they would kill all the princes.

They would kill all the family members, immediate family members,

because they didn't want any of them rebelling and coming against the king.

And so what happened was the caretaker

picked up M'shibiphath and ran and tried to set him on a horse and dropped him.

And he became paralyzed.

I was like, man, I don't know.

And it got me thinking,

there might be some people in the church today here.

That's what the Bible says, don't judge other people.

Because you don't know who dropped them.

I don't judge people for smoking in the parking lot.

I don't judge people for, I don't care.

It's not my position to judge, not you should be judged.

I don't judge people for going on the weekends and drinking.

Is it right? It's not my position to judge.

I don't know who dropped them.

I don't judge people

for doing drugs.

I don't drug people because I know the drugs are the problem.

It's their solution to a deeper rooted problem.

Who dropped them?

Who dropped you?

Who's got you feeling the way you're feeling right now?

Maybe you feel like M'shibiphath and you feel paralyzed.

Spiritually.

Who dropped you?

Was your mom?

Was your dad, was your grandpa?

Someone in your family that should have protected you and loved you.

Instead, they dropped you.

And here you are feeling paralyzed.

Maybe it was a spouse that dropped you.

And now you feel paralyzed.

Your heart's at a thousand pieces.

Who dropped you?

But when M'shibiphath came to the king, he bowed down and said,

what is your servant?

That you should notice me, a dead dog like me.

The king called him.

He said, I want you at my table.

And his response was, I'm just a dead dog.

Who in here is like, maybe you feel like a dead dog.

I'm rotten.

If you only knew was on the inside, I can make the outside look real good.

But on the inside, I'm broken.

I'm hurting. I'm paralyzed.

King David said, I don't care.

I want you sitting at my table.

Jesus is saying, I don't care.

I want you sitting at my table.

I came here for broken people.

I came here so you can live.

In verse 13, M'shibiphath, after he got accepted the invitation, he accepted the invitation.

It says that he lived in Jerusalem and always ate at the king's table.

He was lame in both feet.

There's a significance when you sit at the king's table.

Oh, my God.

I could imagine him sitting at the table, looking at King David, like, what am I doing here?

King David, you know, your family.

He probably felt pretty good, though, because when he sat at the table,

no one at the table knew he was paralyzed.

Because the table covered him.

It covers your flaws.

You may be feeling paralyzed this morning, but Jesus is saying, when you sit at my table,

when you get bought with my blood, when you understand the covenant that I died so you could live,

I died so you could live.

My God.

If you all could stand up.

Like the disciples, you know, we're we're all unworthy.

We're all unworthy.

But the fact is.

Jesus desires you to be forgiven, it's not that we deserve forgiveness.

He desires for us to be forgiven.

I want a very bad every head bowed and every eye closed.

We got some broken people in the room.

Maybe you're the one that you feel like a dead dog.
