  1. The Church of Sardis and to the Angel of the church and Sardis

  2. right these things, says he who has the seven spirits of God and

  3. the seven stars. We know what they are because

  4. chapter 1 tells us what are they, the churches remember,

  5. where is Jesus in the midst of the churches?

  6. Here's what Jesus says to this church.

  7. Remember this letter was to be written read out in the church

  8. at Sardis, modern Turkey today. I know your works, that you have

  9. a name, that you are alive now here this, but you're dead.

  10. Can you imagine that being read out from the pulpit?

  11. You're dead. Be watchful, interesting, he

  12. says. Be watchful.

  13. Sardis fell a number of times. It was had high place, great

  14. fortification. And on one occasion those who

  15. are attacking the land, we're trying to work out how to get

  16. in. And they saw this guy lost his

  17. helmet, fell over the side and he climbed down.

  18. They watched him climb down, down, down.

  19. They noted how he went back up. And that's how they entered the

  20. city of Silas and the city of Salas had no Watchmen because

  21. they felt that their, their, their place was impregnable.

  22. That's why Jesus says here be watchful and strengthen the

  23. things which remain that are ready to die.

  24. For I have not found your works perfect.

  25. That is complete mature before God.

  26. Remember, therefore, how you have received and heard.

  27. Hold fast and repent. Therefore, if you will not

  28. watch, I'll come upon you as a thief, and you will not know

  29. what hour I will come upon you. You have a few names even in

  30. Sardis, who have not defiled their garments, and they shall

  31. walk with me in white, for thou are worthy.

  32. He whoever comes shall be clothed in white garments.

  33. I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I

  34. will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

  35. He was an ear. Let him hear what the Spirit

  36. says to the churches. Jesus here makes a call on his

  37. own church and sawdust, much like a divine coroner.

  38. I spent, I have spent over the past 20 something years, a lot

  39. of time at the morgue with the police and the work of the

  40. coroner. And here Jesus comes across as

  41. the coroner making a call and he pronounces that this church, he

  42. says it's dead. The message of Jesus to Sardis

  43. is one of the most severe of the seven for the poor and

  44. persecuted people of the church at Smyrna.

  45. Remember, Jesus had nothing but price, but for Cyrus, Jesus had

  46. nothing commendable to say, which is quite amazing as this

  47. church had a great reputation in the area.

  48. This church, Jesus does not mention any false doctrine.

  49. Notice there's no Lincoln, Nicolaitans, none of that going

  50. on, no Jezebel there. It does not mention any

  51. persecution. They don't have people, you

  52. know, you're not killing them like Smyrna did.

  53. The church was just comfortable. It was wealthy.

  54. Sardis, the area of Sardis is very wealthy.

  55. It was content. It was coasting, you might say,

  56. and living up it's good reputation.

  57. But Sardis was a cold church. Not cold in temperature, but it

  58. was cold like a dead body. No life, no warmth.

  59. But even in this church, not, not everyone was guilty of that.

  60. Not all the congregation had died in the sense of the walk

  61. with God. Sara still had a chance.

  62. God was giving this church a chance, chance for revival.

  63. A miracle could still happen. But for the most part, this

  64. church amounted to a morgue with a steeple.

  65. And across the top of it, Jesus has spoken fairly harshly.

  66. You'll remember to the church fire Tyre we covered, but at

  67. least they had a few good things to say to the people there.

  68. Not so with Sardis. Jesus jumps right in with a

  69. warning and an exhortation. Sardis was among the most

  70. important and wealthy cities in ancient Asia.

  71. It was the first place that coinage was actually printed

  72. because of its wealth in Asia Minor.

  73. It's location set at the junction what was called the

  74. Imperial Highway that connected Ephesus and Smyrna and Pergamos

  75. with the inland cities of Asia Minor, modern Turkey.

  76. There were two main features to Sardis that distinguished it

  77. from others. It had a an Acropolis, you know,

  78. this big citadel building and that function, however, as a

  79. necropolis. What is that?

  80. That is a graveyard, the cemetery it was called it was

  81. called the cemetery of 1000 hills from over 7 miles away.

  82. As you viewed Sardis, you could not only see the temple of

  83. Diana, this great temple that there was built there same Diana

  84. is also Artemis atop the the Acropolis.

  85. Some of you have been to Greece, you've seen the work there.

  86. But secondly, this cemetery was filled with hundreds of burial

  87. mounds and tombstones. So it was truly, as they say,

  88. the dead, dead centre of the of, of the city, the city Saras, it

  89. was occupied with death, significant.

  90. So it's significant that Jesus tells this church you're dead,

  91. there's no life in you. In other words, Sardis was a

  92. church full of hypocrites. Hypocrites.

  93. The term hypocrite comes from the term hoopocrites.

  94. During the Greek plays and everything that were written,

  95. the hoopocrites, the actors would have a face mask of the,

  96. the part that they're playing on a, on a stick, and they would

  97. speak and act with the mask in front of them of the part

  98. they're playing. They were called hoopocrites.

  99. So Jesus is saying to this church, you guys, you know,

  100. people said well the church is full of hypocrites.

  101. Well, Sardis was. Paul calls such people that

  102. Jesus is Speaking of in Two Timothy 3/5.

  103. He says it would be like this in the last days there will be

  104. people who have a form of godliness.

  105. They know all the words but have denied its power.

  106. They know all the words you know, carry Bibles maybe, maybe

  107. serve and only but they deny the power of God.

  108. We cannot see the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

  109. It's not evidenced saddest as a church lacked the one thing it

  110. needed the most, life, which is the Holy Spirit.

  111. So Jesus introduced himself. Revelation 31 did the church and

  112. the Angel of the church and Sardis write these things, says

  113. he who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

  114. I know your works, that you have a name, that you're alive, but

  115. you're dead. Apparently many people in this

  116. church, Sardis, profess to be Christians, but we're unsaved.

  117. How many people do you talk to often when you're talking about

  118. the Bible or Christianity or something like, well, I'm a

  119. Christian too, and you, you go, oh, are you?

  120. Because you know, it's probably a long call to say such.

  121. Jesus, the great Physician, takes the pulse of this church

  122. and spiritually speaking, he finds there's nothing there.

  123. But the church itself had a great reputation in the city of

  124. Sardis for being alive, man. You want to know where?

  125. What church should I go to? Sardis.

  126. It's happened in it. Go there, man.

  127. There's always people there. They're coming and go on.

  128. They always got this on and that on.

  129. That was Sardis. Jesus is using an idiom here.

  130. What's an idiom? An idiom is a group of words

  131. which when used together have a different meaning from the one

  132. suggested by the individual words.

  133. And Jesus quotes, he has the seven spirits of God.

  134. He quotes from Isaiah Chapter 11 verses one to two.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  135. Isaiah said out of the stump of David's family will grow a

  136. chute, yes, a new branch bearing the fruit from the old root, and

  137. the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and

  138. understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of

  139. knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

  140. The seven functions of 7 powers. The number 7 denotes here, and

  141. the terms used. We see 7 descriptions there

  142. denote the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

  143. And so here Sardis as a church needed the infusion of the

  144. sevenfold Spirit of God. What is that?

  145. Just as an individual needs, you know, how do you become born

  146. again? You can't be born again without

  147. you must be born again without the Spirit of God.

  148. Remember, Nicodemus said, how does that happen?

  149. Like that's a bit weird what you're saying.

  150. Jesus, I'm an old man. I'm not going to go back and

  151. have that happen again. No, Nicodemus, you don't

  152. understand. You must be born again.

  153. The Spirit of God must become in must come in you and change your

  154. heart. In the book of Genesis when God

  155. created man, when he created Adam, remember there was just a

  156. pile of dirt, pile of clay looked good, looked great, just

  157. looked like a a person Adam first one, but it was dead

  158. wasn't alive. Then it says God breathed in

  159. humour the breath of life, Genesis 27.

  160. And it says that then man became a living being.

  161. Only then was he alive. The church at Sardis had become

  162. so much like the world. This is what Jesus is saying

  163. about this church so much alike the world around it in the way

  164. that it behaved. It thought that it spoke that it

  165. could no longer confronted society.

  166. You know, we often have people come say, well, it's I'm finding

  167. it difficult being a Christian. I go out and people have a go at

  168. me at work and people say this and you know, and I and I I feel

  169. pressure because now that I'm a Christian, this is happening and

  170. in my class and the teacher has a crack at me at the university,

  171. the lecturer has a crack at me. Guess what, it's because you're

  172. different. You're alive and you're hanging

  173. out with dead people and they see you as something that's not

  174. like them because you're you confront society.

  175. I remember Helen doing a further studies in studies in

  176. anthropology, doing a master's and going on and the lecturer

  177. said, she said to her, I'm not going to write about evolution

  178. because I don't believe evolution.

  179. I will write my answers according to creation.

  180. Oh, well, that's the way you go. So she did you see you, you

  181. confront society. That's why when you are around a

  182. group of people, all of a sudden you get picked on or, or or

  183. you're the square peg, the round hole.

  184. It's because you you you're full of the Spirit of God, but Sardis

  185. no longer confronted in society. This is what being spiritually

  186. dead means. If if when you're out in your

  187. sporting group, in your woman's group, in your men's group or

  188. and then and you're getting along with everybody and you

  189. just blend in with everybody else.

  190. Be careful. It could be that you're

  191. spiritually dead, but you don't have the Holy Spirit alive

  192. within you. There are three factors that had

  193. contributed contributed to Christ's sobering assessment of

  194. Silas. Just what did Jesus spiritual

  195. post mortem reveal? 1 The Church died because its

  196. members relied upon their past successes.

  197. Well, I've been baptised. I've, I've done this, I, I've

  198. been through Holy Communion, I, I've been confirmed, I've, I've

  199. done the catechism. I, I, I go to church.

  200. None of those make you a Christian.

  201. And the past successes. It's a sure sign of death when a

  202. church worships its past, it's history and it's tradition.

  203. This is how we've done it always.

  204. We've always done it this way. Secondly, this church lived on

  205. the surface of things. It's members cared more about

  206. their reputation than the reality that was taking place

  207. around them. We had a little note left on our

  208. servery here during the week one of the guys picked up.

  209. It was about to from the river to the sea about Palestine

  210. people. You know, we had a the Israeli

  211. flag at in one morning when we're setting it up, guys, you

  212. can have that flag up there, but you can't have that flag out the

  213. front. You see, if you, if you stand

  214. for Israel, you're standing for God and you're going to be

  215. different. The reason that you stand for

  216. Israel is not because I think they're a great people because

  217. the Bible says they just, they weren't anything great about

  218. them. We stand for Israel because the

  219. Bible says stand for Israel, pray for them, love them.

  220. They're my people. But the Church of Sardis was

  221. more concerned about their reputation than the reality that

  222. was taking place around them. And whilst they he said, Jesus

  223. says you have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled

  224. their garments. They shall walk with me and

  225. white for thou worthy those who were saved.

  226. So while the church at Sardis had a great exterior and

  227. supposedly sound reputation, underneath he was dead.

  228. Filth and spiritual death lay underneath.

  229. You'd say the church was wearing a beautiful burial garment.

  230. Historian Herodotus said of Sardis that it had become LAX in

  231. its moral standards and open in licentiousness.

  232. What is that saying? In other words, the world had

  233. invited that church. That's why the church was

  234. thought. That's a great church, man.

  235. That's a Oh yeah, we all go there, they hang out with us.

  236. We because it was the same. It wasn't any different.

  237. It didn't confront you could live how you please and you

  238. could fellowship there. The world invited it with its

  239. morals and behaviour. The members of the church became

  240. so concerned with their reputation, what others thought

  241. about them. That's what reputation is, that

  242. they lost all their character. They blended.

  243. You and I, we, we're never going to blend.

  244. I always run into people when when you're a pastor and you run

  245. into different pastors and ministers, they go, oh, what you

  246. do? You don't believe you're not

  247. teaching Genesis, are you? You know, that's just there

  248. because it's, we don't really know if it's Scripture.

  249. I go what? Yes, and they're behind pulpits

  250. and churches today. You're not one of those born

  251. again, Isaiah. Well, actually, yeah, because

  252. John chapter 3 says I have to be Jesus said so.

    John 3 chapter mention

  253. Reputation is an interesting word.

  254. What another's opinion is of a personal thing is what

  255. reputation is. It's how you're being perceived.

  256. And you know what, there's too many people who come to church

  257. and go to church who are more concerned about their reputation

  258. with people than they are concerned about their their walk

  259. with God. Paul just nailed that.

  260. He said, I don't care what you say about me.

  261. God's my witness. God's my witness.

  262. Character is how you are really living.

  263. It's who you really are. So saddest was a church filled

  264. with nominal Christians who were living superficially for God.

  265. Thirdly, the congregation that Sardis became satisfied with

  266. aimless activity. That's one thing we've really

  267. focused on here. You go, well, you don't have too

  268. many programmes here, correct? Correct.

  269. Because a lot of programmes that occur are aimless activity.

  270. If you want a programme you can go to the Golf Club, the surf

  271. club, the Mccramy club, the Bowling Club, local community

  272. centre, the sewing centre, whatever.

  273. You can do all those things, you go, we'll keep the same, just

  274. listen to me. The cooking club, the muffin

  275. club, whatever, You can do all those things at those places.

  276. It's funny how Jesus said, but my house shall be a House of

  277. prayer. When it was a marketplace.

  278. You see aimless activity. What's the sense of doing what

  279. we're doing? Is it going to win souls?

  280. Is it going to tell people about Christ?

  281. Is it going to impact the community?

  282. What we got? A lot of people come along.

  283. Great, let's have free beer, free hamburgers.

  284. You know, we'll pack the joint every Wednesday.

  285. Hey, it's free beer and free hamburgers across the road.

  286. We pack it out. That church is an awesome place.

  287. Jesus told the people their works were imperfect or

  288. incomplete. They served and worked with no

  289. heart, no life in what they did. And what I'm saying here is that

  290. Jesus saying is the Holy Spirit was not driving these

  291. activities. You know what?

  292. When we should do something is when God says do this.

  293. Because I know what it's like in my early years as a young

  294. minister, I go, here's a good idea, let's do this.

  295. God says over the years I learnt that's good, I don't want you

  296. doing that. I'm not interested in that.

  297. You see, the Bible is very clear what the early church did.

  298. Holy Spirit driven activities is what we need.

  299. Whilst the surrounding community saw Sardis as a great church,

  300. they had the reputation. Jesus saw them as empty,

  301. lifeless shell. It had a lot of irons in the

  302. fire, but none were hot, none had life.

  303. Well, what's the antidotes of such a spiritual, spiritual,

  304. serious spiritual malaise? 1 realised Firstly something is

  305. wrong that's the first thing. Isn't that what Alcoholics and

  306. non obstique realise first I got a problem realise first thing

  307. Realise firstly something is wrong.

  308. So Jesus tells those who still had a little lie for them wake

  309. up. Verse 2 strengthen what remains

  310. and is about to die for I found what your deeds unfinished in

  311. the sight of my God. Wake up, the NIV says I think

  312. wake up, realise there's something wrong.

  313. Secondly, Jesus then says strengthen what remains and it

  314. is about to die. The Greek word used here means

  315. stabilise that which is frail. Paul used the same term when he

  316. was on his third missionary journey through Galatia, when he

  317. said in Acts 1823, after he had spent some time there, he

  318. departed, went over the region of Galatia and for India in

  319. order strengthening all the disciples.

  320. This is the same word. I will go and strengthen the

  321. brothers. Paul wanted to return to these

  322. Christians and strengthen them lest they fall away.

  323. Thirdly, this church, they would have called to memory the basics

  324. once again. What are we supposed to be

  325. doing? That's what you and I should

  326. always be asking yourself. You know, that's a good thing in

  327. a role of a husband, the role of a wife, the role of a mother and

  328. a father, the role of a Christian.

  329. What is it that I'm supposed to be doing?

  330. We should always go back. What actually is it that I

  331. should be doing? We can only assume that they had

  332. received the core things of the faith, such as the gospel and

  333. the Holy Spirit. Jesus instructed the church

  334. members at Sardis to look to their past and get in touch with

  335. their heritage. Look how far you've drifted from

  336. where you began. Similar to the church at

  337. Ephesus, that which had once made them great, the foundation

  338. on which they built was a wise one originally member, wise

  339. builder, foundation. Who's the foundation?

  340. The rock. Who's the rock?

  341. Christ, the unwise builder, just continues building and building

  342. and building on sand. Yet Jesus urged them to use

  343. those things of their past as a guidepost.

  344. Remember what we used to do? That's what we should be doing.

  345. Not a hitching post. Oh yeah, this church.

  346. I remember when in 45 when the revival swept through.

  347. Only we had a revival. We had a revival once.

  348. You know Revelation 3/5 heathen overcomes the same shall be

  349. clothed in white raiment. And I will not blot out his name

  350. out of the Book of life, but I will confess his name before my

  351. Father and before his angels. This verse at times confuses

  352. many because it appears, it seems to imply that a genuine

  353. believer can lose his or her salvation.

  354. But this is not what the text teaches at all, nor does any

  355. scripture as such. What is meant by the Book of

  356. Life? Well, some believe the Book of

  357. Life is a register in which the names of people are added the

  358. moment they receive Christ. Others believe it's a record of

  359. every person who has ever been born since the time Christ died,

  360. and that their names are removed at the end of their lives if

  361. they die in their sins. Well, the Bible tells us there

  362. are in fact two books. As a matter of fact, the Bible

  363. tells us a lot of books, doesn't it?

  364. It's going to be books opened. Books opened in heaven.

  365. The Bible tells us there are in fact two books that we need to

  366. look at tonight. The book of the living one.

  367. Secondly, the book of life 2, The book of the living is the

  368. record of every person who was born.

  369. When a person dies, his or her name is removed from the book of

  370. the living. In Exodus chapter 32, you

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  371. remember the children of Israel have sinned.

  372. They've done just just golden calves.

  373. They've just carried on. Moses goes back up onto the

  374. mountain to speak to God, and there Moses intercedes on behalf

  375. of the people of Israel because of their sin with the golden

  376. calf. Moses essentially said to God,

  377. God, please forgive your people. Don't wipe me out.

  378. And if you'll not forgive them, then blot me out of your book

  379. which you've written. In other words, take my life

  380. instead. Now Moses was willing to have

  381. his life cut short in order to save the people who had sinned.

  382. But God responded, Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot

  383. him out of my book. He's a holy God.

  384. God was going to punish the guilty with physical death, and

  385. it happened. In Psalm 6928, David makes a

  386. similar statement about God punishing his enemies by

  387. blotting their names out of the book of the living.

  388. In other words, take them out, Lord.

  389. Psalm 6928 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living

  390. and not be written with the righteous.

  391. But here in our text tonight, verse 5, Jesus is talking about

  392. the book of life. This is a record of every

  393. genuine believer. In Philippians chapter 4 verse

    Philippians 4:3

  394. 3, Paul mentions this while describing genuine believers who

  395. were fellow workers. Paul says that their names are

  396. in the book of life. Philippians 4 three.

  397. And I urge you also, True Companion, help these women who

  398. laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest

  399. of my fellow workers whose names are in the book of life.

  400. Later on in the Book of Revelation chapter 13, verse 8,

    Revelation 13:8

  401. this record is described as being the book of life of the

  402. Lamb. Same Then in Revelation chapter

    Revelation 20:15

  403. 20 verse 15, at the judgement of the unsaved, the great white

  404. Throne judgement all the dead second resurrection erased.

  405. At the judgement of the unsaved we read that their names were

  406. what not found in the book of life.

  407. Finally in Revelation 2127 we read that heaven will be

  408. inhabited only by those whose names are written in the Lamb's

  409. book of life. So whilst some have attempted to

  410. interpret Revelation 3/5 as the possibility of losing 1's

  411. salvation, it actually teaches the opposite.

  412. Genuine believers, like the Remnant in Sardis, can never

  413. have their names blotted out of the Book of Life, which is the

  414. book that records the name of every true believer.

  415. Your salvation is sure. Otherwise, you know, you go to

  416. bed. How would you wake up?

  417. You can't go to bed. Well, that's pretty, pretty good

  418. tomorrow. Well, Gee, I hope I'm good

  419. tomorrow. It's eternal life.

  420. Not not possible eternal life, not considerable with with a

  421. few, you know, bits and pieces here Jesus told his disciples,

  422. remember they came back rejoicing.

  423. Wow, Jesus, you know this happened and that happened.

  424. We did miracles and then Jesus that that's not what you should

  425. be rejoicing about. He says rejoice because your

  426. name is written in heaven. You know how it's written in

  427. permanent marker. In permanent marker.

  428. John chapter 10, my favourite chapter in the Gospel of John,

    John 10 chapter mention

  429. probably my one of my favourite chapters over all in the Bible.

  430. John chapter 10 verse 27. My sheep hear my voice, and I

    John 10:27

  431. know them, and they follow me, and I give them eternal life,

  432. and they shall never perish, neither shall anyone snatch them

  433. out of my hand, Paul says in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  434. What shall separate us from the love of God?

  435. Nothing. Death, Height, length, breadth,

  436. anything created in the universe under the universe you know man

  437. nothing. And here when it says, and they

  438. shall never perish, in the Greek it actually says this.

  439. You shall never know, never know, never know, never perish.

  440. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the

  441. churches. The key is to having your name

  442. written in the Lamb's book of life.

  443. How does that happen? Jesus, I come to you as a

  444. Sinner. I confess my sins before you.

  445. I know that I'm worthy of judgement.

  446. But Lord, I call upon you now. I asked.

  447. And in the name of Jesus, your Son, I believe that he died on

  448. the cross for me. I believe that He died for the

  449. penalty of my sins. I accept that and by faith now I

  450. ask you to come into my life and be now my Lord and Saviour.

  451. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen. That's all you do.
