  1. Let's take a seat. Open your Bibles to the book of

  2. Acts chapter 2. We'll finish Acts 2 on Sunday

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  3. morning. This is Part 2 and we're looking

  4. at Peter's sermon because I did a fair bit of lead up, but I

  5. want to look at the first sermon ever preached under the

  6. anointing of the Holy Spirit apart from Jesus obviously in in

  7. the New Testament. So we serve from verse 14.

  8. Let's jump straight into it. But Peter standing up with the

  9. 11 raised his voice and said to him and of Judea and all who

  10. dwell in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you.

  11. Heed my words. Listen up Peter Sirius, for

  12. these are not drunk. As they'd witnessed the cloven

  13. fire upon the 120 disciples. They'd witnessed and heard the

  14. Galileans speaking in foreign languages, beautiful languages

  15. that they were not cognizant with, but people in the crowd

  16. who'd travelled 3 days to a week.

  17. The feast of Pentecost was the most attended of all the feasts

  18. and and people were hearing these Galileans speak in their

  19. own language, in their own dialect that says in the Greek

  20. of the majesty, the wonders of God.

  21. And Peter is now explaining what has happened.

  22. And someone said, well, they're just drunk.

  23. And Peter says, hey, you people don't think they're drunk.

  24. He he deals with them as you suppose it's only 9:00 AM in the

  25. morning. But this is that the King James

  26. says, I said, I think it says it's best.

  27. This is that which was spoken on the by the prophet Joel.

  28. And now Peter, because the sermon should have, should have

  29. scripture shouldn't be just about, oh, let me tell you a

  30. story, you know, and then I'll tell you another story.

  31. They called skyscraper sermons. You know why?

  32. Because they're story after story after story after story

  33. verse 17 and he quotes Joel and shall come to pass in the last

  34. days. So Peter saying we are in the

  35. last days. Then John in one John says we're

  36. in the last hour of the last days.

  37. That's 2000 years ago. So how how far are we advanced

  38. in the last of the last days of the last hour minutes?

  39. He says I'll pour out my spirit on all flesh.

  40. Your sons and your daughters shall prophecy that word.

  41. Prophecy isn't not like oh, let me tell you what's going to

  42. happen now prophecy here is they will proclaim and speak the word

  43. of God each time you hear like tonight as I teach from the word

  44. of God. It's prophecy.

  45. It's proclaiming the word of God.

  46. Prophecy is not all 4th telling. This is what's going to happen.

  47. Prophecy here in this context is they will speak the gospel, they

  48. will speak the word of God. Your young men shall see

  49. visions. And now this is where I come

  50. into it. Your old men shall dream dreams.

  51. And all my menservants and my maidservants, I will pour out my

  52. spirit in in those days and they shall prophecy.

  53. I will show wonders in heaven, above signs in the earth,

  54. beneath blood and fire and vapour of smoke.

  55. The sun shall be turned Into Darkness and the moon into

  56. blood. Where?

  57. Where have we heard those words before?

  58. Matthew 24, Jesus says last days Book of Revelation.

  59. So Peter is saying not only is this happening today, but these

  60. are the events that are going to happen in the future.

  61. So we're we're actually dealing with the time after Christ's

  62. death. Peter's in and now we're looking

  63. at time in our future during what's called the tribulation,

  64. the moon in the blood, how far before the coming of the Great

  65. Northern day of the Lord, the second coming of Christ.

  66. And it shall come to pass that during the tribulation context

  67. here, whoever calls on the name of the Lord and many people will

  68. get saved in the tribulation. Can you imagine, man?

  69. You've been told, been told, been told, your friends

  70. witnessed to you, told you about the rapture, then they

  71. disappeared, and then they told you about the Antichrist, and

  72. then we got this guy in charge. The events of the world.

  73. Then you see the peace treaty being signed by Israel.

  74. Israel rebuilds the temple. You become, my gosh, all that I

  75. was told it's happening. Most people come to call on

  76. Christ and be saved. The trouble is, during the

  77. Tribulation period, your salvation will be also your

  78. death. Peter quickly dismisses the

  79. mockers. He deals with the the bullheads

  80. in the crowd. John's prophecy, as I said in

  81. context, is really looking more so at the time of the great

  82. Tribulation and into the second coming of Jesus Christ.

  83. People said that these disciples were drunk and we touched on

  84. that on Sunday. No, though under the power of

  85. the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the Holy Spirit is what self

  86. control. And also they spoke as the Holy

  87. Spirit gave them utterance. So when we see churches where

  88. people are raging and carrying on, I'm sorry now.

  89. I'm not sorry. It's not biblical.

  90. It's it's terrible. It's terrible now.

  91. So Peter says prophecy is looking to what's going to

  92. happen, and he's talking about it's the outpouring of the Holy

  93. Spirit. It's going to happen during the

  94. Tribulation period as well. But Keith, didn't you say, like,

  95. doesn't the Bible say in the Second Thessalonians that when

  96. the church has gone, that which is restrained is no longer

  97. there? Yeah, the church in that way.

  98. But the Holy Spirit, it's still going to be up on earth because

  99. it's through the Holy Spirit. People come to know Christ

  100. because he convicts of sin, brings us to salvation.

  101. It's the work of God that you and I are saved.

  102. We had nothing to do with our salvation except accept it.

  103. And it was the convicting work of the Holy Spirit that brought

  104. us to this point. So note this, Therefore, the

  105. empowering of the Holy Spirit falling on this day, the day of

  106. Pentecost, and the associated gifts.

  107. Pastor Israel dealt with them in detail when we went through 1

  108. Corinthians, especially chapter 1213 or 14.

  109. The gifts of the Holy Spirit that came on the day of

  110. Pentecost are not limited just to the day of Pentecost.

  111. Yes, the cloven fire, the rushing wind that day, but the

  112. gifts will continue on through our church history because there

  113. are people that say, well, you know, people, those happy

  114. clappers, those charis maniacs that believe the gifts, you

  115. know, all this stuff that all stopped with the disciples.

  116. Well, the Bible says, no, it didn't because it's going to go

  117. on. The the prophecy of Joel says

  118. this continues on into the into the great tribulation throughout

  119. church history, right on to the second coming of Jesus Christ,

  120. when we won't need those gifts after that.

  121. The fact that the power of the Holy Spirit will be experienced

  122. in the last days indicates that those who say the gifts ceased

  123. with the apostles are biblically incorrect.

  124. So now Peter, he's explained what this is.

  125. This is that prophet Joel, He's explained what that is, and now

  126. the central part of his sermon, which is should be the central

  127. part of every sermon, he talks about Jesus Christ.

  128. Now Peter preaches Jesus Christ after he's explained to the

  129. gathered crowd what they had witnessed with the wind, the

  130. cloven fires, the Speaking of languages, dialect foreign to

  131. the Galilean disciples. He says this is the power from

  132. on high. The first sermon, anointed by

  133. the Holy Spirit, is centred on the person of Jesus Christ.

  134. They should tell us what we should do from then on.

  135. Peter identifies Jesus as being Jesus from Nazareth.

  136. It's very important. Jesus was a common name back at

  137. the time of Christ. Jesus is remembered the Greek

  138. name of the Hebrew name Yahshua, and every Tom, Dick and Harry

  139. was Yahshua and in the Greek they were Jesus.

  140. Secondly, Peter brings proof of who Jesus is.

  141. He is the Messiah, so he says the Jesus that I'm going to tell

  142. you about is Jesus, that Jesus from Nazareth, the Rabbi you all

  143. know about, remember. And secondly, I want to give you

  144. proof of who that Jesus is. I'm going to tell you He's

  145. speaking to Jews. He's the Messiah.

  146. Men of Israel, verse 22, hear these words.

  147. Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested by God to you.

  148. How? By miracles, wonders, signs

  149. which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves

  150. also know. So the crowd there had witnessed

  151. the events that Jesus had done, him being delivered by the

  152. determined purpose and foreknowledge of who God.

  153. John 316 For God so loved the world.

  154. What did he do? He gave his only begotten Son.

  155. For unto us a child is given, unto us a son is given, a child

  156. is born, a son is given, Isaiah said.

  157. And so him being delivered by the determined purpose and

  158. foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have

  159. crucified and put to death. Well, this is a tough audience

  160. and he's bringing a tough message, isn't he?

  161. Imagine he's talking to the people and he's saying the

  162. Messiah, the Jewish Messiah you're all longing for, looking

  163. for. It was him.

  164. And he died on the cross because God the Father planned it that

  165. way. You're involved in that, and

  166. you're the ones that put him to death through the Romans by the

  167. signs and wonders and miracles that Jesus did of which they

  168. were witnesses. In John chapter 10, the

    John 10 chapter mention

  169. religious leaders came to Jesus. In verse 24, the Jews surrounded

  170. him and said to him, How long do you keep us in doubt?

  171. If you're the Christ, if you're the Messiah, tell us plainly.

  172. Jesus answered them. I told you, you do not believe

  173. the works that I do in my father's name.

  174. They bear witness of me. All the things that I've done,

  175. feeding of the 5000, the 1510 thousand, the raising of the

  176. dead Lazarus, all these events walking on the water.

  177. You've heard all about these things.

  178. They, they witness of who I am. But you do not believe.

  179. Be why didn't and why didn't they believe John 1026 because

  180. you are not of my sheep, as I said to you.

  181. Now Thirdly, the way that Jesus died, invented by the Persians,

  182. polished up by the Romans, crucifixion.

  183. Peter says this was God's plan for Christ his Son, the Lamb of

  184. God, the Messiah, before the foundations of the earth were

  185. laid. Paul picks this very point up in

  186. one Corinthians chapter 15 verse 3.

  187. Paul says, For I delivered to you first of all that which I

  188. also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the

  189. scriptures, and that he was buried, and then he rose again

  190. the third day according to the Scriptures.

  191. Remember Jesus walking with the two on the road to Emmaus, he

  192. says basically said you, you, you foolish people, all these

  193. things that occurred, they're in and he gave them the Bible

  194. study. This is them.

  195. You know, it's the greatest thing.

  196. I, I, I tell you again, I've said it many times before, but

  197. when I was a young boy, Easter was the most difficult period of

  198. my life. I broke down over Easter.

  199. I would weep as a kid on on my own in in my bedroom as a little

  200. kid because I couldn't understand why Jesus was killed

  201. and why no one helped him. Why, why was he treated?

  202. Why why didn't anyone come to his to his aid?

  203. And then I found out the reason that he died.

  204. He died voluntarily. He was led as a lamb to the

  205. slaughter. He had enough word.

  206. He let them LED away. Peter tried to bring out the

  207. sword, cut off the ear, tried to kill the guy arresting him.

  208. Peter put the sword away. This is, This is why I'm here.

  209. This is why Christmas we just celebrated, why that little baby

  210. was born. He was born to die.

  211. God became a man to die. Peter says this is that man.

  212. Peter then moves to the very heart of the gospel.

  213. What's the heart of the gospel? The resurrection.

  214. The resurrection. It was not possible that death

  215. could hold Jesus. Why Acts chapter 2 verse 24,

    Acts 2:24

  216. whom God raised up having loosed the pains of death, because it

  217. was not possible that he should be held by it.

  218. Because God had said Jesus would rise from the dead the third day

  219. God's word is going to stand. I love that.

  220. Because Jesus says he's coming back.

  221. Jesus said he's coming back from me.

  222. You and I tonight need to have the same confidence and

  223. assurance in the word of God. We we ought to have no questions

  224. about it, no doubts about it. Does the Bible say go away,

  225. please, sorry. As I gotten older, I know I need

  226. to be tolerant, but I'm less tolerant when when there are

  227. things of the word of God that if you're a believer, this is

  228. the word of God. I am the Lord thy God.

  229. I change not, and we need to have no doubts that what it says

  230. is going to happen. No doubts when God says

  231. something, He means it, and it will come to pass.

  232. The rapture is going to happen. The tribulation is going to fall

  233. upon this earth. What does it mean?

  234. The pains of death having loosed the pains of death.

  235. In the Greek language, this term is to bind with cords until it

  236. hurts. What Peter is saying here is

  237. here the cords of death tried to hold Jesus in the grave,

  238. couldn't, Nothing could hold him.

  239. Nothing could hold Jesus in the grave at this moment, as Peter

  240. is talking about the resurrection.

  241. And there were many Jews who are influenced, Hellenistic Jews,

  242. influenced by Greek philosophy. At this moment in the crowd, the

  243. Greek philosophers, their minds switched off.

  244. He's lost me. I'm out of here talking about

  245. resurrection. Come back.

  246. No. So then Peter, does he come into

  247. an argument? So, oh, no, you're wrong, I'm

  248. right. You're wrong.

  249. Scripture. And so he says verse 25, Peter

  250. gives them biblical evidence for the teaching of the resurrection

  251. for David King David says concerning Jesus, I foresaw the

  252. Lord always before my face for he is at my right hand that I

  253. may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoice, my

  254. tongue was glad. Moreover, my flesh also will

  255. rest in hope for you will not leave my soul.

  256. Peter is talking about not himself.

  257. We'll see. He's talking about Jesus his

  258. resurrection. He's not saying Dave's not

  259. saying my soul won't be in in, in Hades won't be held there,

  260. no, nor will you allow your holy One to see corruption.

  261. You have made known to me the ways of life.

  262. You will make me full of joy in your presence.

  263. Men and brethman, let me speak freely to you of the Patriarch

  264. David who is referenced that he is both dead and buried and

  265. where the upper room is. And we go to the upper room in

  266. old Jerusalem. And just down from the upper

  267. room we go walk down a little ways about sort of like where

  268. the the the car park out of car park is.

  269. And there is David's tomb. He can go in there and visit

  270. David's soon even today. And he says, let me speak freely

  271. to you of the Patriarch David as Peter does that he is both dead

  272. and buried and his tomb is with us to his day.

  273. His point to where the tomb is not far from the upper room.

  274. Therefore, David, being a prophet, and knowing that God

  275. had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of His body

  276. would come the Messiah according to the flesh, he would raise up

  277. the Christ to sit on His throne. He, foreseeing this, spoke

  278. concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul Jesus

  279. was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.

  280. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

  281. We've seen Him therefore being exalted to the right hand of God

  282. and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy

  283. Spirit, he poured out this on which you now see in here.

  284. See how he's relating this to what's happening?

  285. Because we saw Jesus resurrected, He's we saw him

  286. ascend. We now know he's at the right

  287. hand of the Father because David said that's where he's going to

  288. be seated at the right hand of his Father.

  289. And because he's gone, he said, when I go, I will send another

  290. comforter just like me. For David did not ascend into

  291. the heavens. No, Jesus did.

  292. But he says himself, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right

  293. hand. Who said at the right hand?

  294. Jesus, after he's finished the sacrifice.

  295. Sacrifice to end all sacrifices. The man sat down.

  296. Till I make your enemies your footstool.

  297. The Greek word for hell is hades.

  298. It means the grave and a place of torment.

  299. The Hebrew word is sheol, and in Luke 16 we're told what it's

  300. like. This place, remember, there was

  301. a rich man on one side who held him.

  302. Abraham, remember, on the other side was, yeah, sorry, Lazarus

  303. was held by Abraham, Paradise. And on the other side was the

  304. rich man. And between, remember, the rich

  305. man said, can you just send just a little bit of water?

  306. I'm thirsty. Funny how he's thirsty.

  307. And Abrams, we can't cross too late.

  308. One side was paradise. One side was torment.

  309. Remember, like the rich guy said, oh, can you send someone

  310. back? Tell someone I don't want my

  311. brothers coming here. And Isaiah 61 one the prophet

  312. Isaiah said the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the

  313. Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor that's

  314. poor in spirit. He has sent me to heal the

  315. broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives.

  316. Who are the captives? In Ephesians chapter 4 it tells

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  317. us, and when he ascended on high, he led captivity captive

  318. and gave gifts to men. Now this he ascended, what does

  319. it mean? But that He also first descended

  320. into the lower parts of the earth.

  321. And so where Abraham was holding Lazarus is empty on the other

  322. side. The rich man's still there and

  323. it's been filled up every day for those who reject Jesus

  324. Christ, the thief on the cross. He where was taken with Jesus to

  325. paradise. Jesus said to him, I surely I

  326. say to you today you will be with me in paradise.

  327. Luke 2343. So David, the writer of Psalm

  328. 16, which Peter unloads on this Jewish crowd proof of the

  329. resurrection of who Jesus is. David is dead and buried and has

  330. been at that time that Peter preaches, about 1000 years dead.

  331. His tomb. As I said, we visit in Jerusalem

  332. near the upper room. Peter would be pointing to it

  333. because it's not far from the upper room.

  334. So Peter says David was a prophet.

  335. God had promised to raise up from David's seed the Messiah.

  336. That's why he's coming back to Jerusalem to sit on David's

  337. throne and that Jesus would be resurrected.

  338. Nothing could hold him. Jesus had then ascended into

  339. heaven to take his place at the right hand of the Father.

  340. David prophesied all that and this same Jesus, Peter says

  341. because he's relating it to all that's happened.

  342. It's he who promised the gift that you see the power, that you

  343. see the Holy Spirit to come. Because back in John 1416, Jesus

  344. had said, I will pray the Father.

  345. He will give you another helper that he may abide with you

  346. forever. So the crowd had witnessed all

  347. this now. So this crowd is pretty savvy.

  348. I know about Jesus of Nazareth. Rabbi come from Nazareth and

  349. went down to Capernaum. He's been there.

  350. He lived in the Galilean, and then he was a Caiaphas.

  351. Remember, he was arrested. Remember, he wrote in Palm

  352. Sunday, you know, and the crowd cried out.

  353. And then he was crucified because we were there.

  354. We cried out, crucifying, crucifying.

  355. And then we heard the tomb was empty.

  356. Now the disciples have tell us they've seen him.

  357. Now the falling of the Holy Spirit.

  358. So all this evidence, evidence, evidence is banking up to all

  359. this massive crowd who had seen the cloven fire, the rushing

  360. wind, heard the rushing wind, and Peter's speaking boldly.

  361. Now what? What happens to them?

  362. They're convicted by the Holy Spirit.

  363. Why? Because he's at work.

  364. Now. Verse 36 Therefore, when you see

  365. a therefore you ask what's there for based on all that Peters

  366. just said, let all the House of Israel know assuredly that God

  367. has made this Jesus and he's told them was Jesus whom you

  368. crucified both Lord and Messiah, both God and Messiah.

  369. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said

  370. to Peter and the rest of the apostles men and brethren, what

  371. shall we do in Acts chapter 16 we'll hear a a gaoler say what

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  372. must I do to be saved? You know what I like about this.

  373. We don't see it enough is that people wanting to get saved.

  374. Everyone thinks they're saved, Everyone thinks they're saved.

  375. Everyone thinks they're right with God.

  376. It needs the convicting work of the Holy Spirit.

  377. And when, when he convicts, there's an action men and

  378. brethren, what shall we do then Peter said to them, here's the

  379. answer of what to do. Repent.

  380. Let everyone of you then be baptised in the name of Jesus

  381. Christ for the remission of sins and then you will receive the

  382. gift of the Holy Spirit that you've seen and heard today for

  383. the promise. And here's the wonder of it all,

  384. Mums, dads, grandparents, the promise is to you and to your

  385. children and to all who are far off.

  386. Now we live in Secret Harbour, West St That's about as far off

  387. from Jerusalem as you can get. As many as the Lord our God will

  388. call. Note that as many as the Lord

  389. our God will call. John 10.

  390. My sheep hear my voice. The church today.

  391. And can you see what? Where the churches we're playing

  392. church. Yeah, we've lost.

  393. We've lost our way. The compass bearing has no

  394. needle on it because it should point to repentance in the

  395. gospel. Just keep repentance to gospel.

  396. The church today needs a gospel that what pierces the hearts of

  397. the hearers that that impacts you.

  398. Not a soft gospel, not a seeker friendly gospel, not another

  399. gospel which is in Second Corinthians.

  400. But each time you and I sit under the word of God, we should

  401. sense His Holiness and our frowness and our thankfulness

  402. that Christ has done this for us.

  403. Repent is the answer to what shall we do?

  404. So when you're witnessing to someone and talk about come to

  405. our church, we have a great band, you know, we have great

  406. programmes, we have a marriage counselling class, we have a

  407. good Sunday school. Repent.

  408. When I talk to people about, you know, they come from

  409. counselling. So often the first thing I deal

  410. with is the main thing is what's your relationship with Christ?

  411. And then I'll ask, because they go, well, I think, are you

  412. reading your Bible? No.

  413. Are you praying? No.

  414. And then they wonder why they're at this place of where they're

  415. lost. You can go to church to still be

  416. lost because here it says repent and be baptised.

  417. Because I'm not. No, you need to be baptised.

  418. Well, well, the thief wasn't baptised.

  419. Absolutely it wasn't. But if he had a choice, if he

  420. could have got down on the cross, he would have got

  421. baptised pretty hard. We got nails in you.

  422. Because baptism is the next step.

  423. I want to be baptised. Why?

  424. Because it signifies a change. It's telling the world I, I am a

  425. Christian. I, the old me, we're going to

  426. walk in the water and we're having a funeral and the new me

  427. we're coming out is showing you a new birth, a new walk, a new

  428. life, a new direction, a burial, a birth and a change of

  429. ownership. The devil doesn't own me

  430. anymore. Verse 40 and with many other

  431. words, Peter testified and exhorted them saying be saved

  432. from this perverse generation. Generation was perverse back

  433. then. We think it's perverse today and

  434. notice this and this what breaks my heart then those doesn't say

  435. and everyone got saved. You notice that we kind of think

  436. error or error, it was just 3000 people and all the 3000 got

  437. saved. No, they didn't because verse 41

  438. says then those who gladly received His word were baptised

  439. and that day about 3000 souls were added to them.

  440. And so there were people there that heard all this information

  441. and said, Nah, you see, that's why when we stand before Christ,

  442. the second resurrection, not us, but people stand.

  443. You have no excuse. You're cooked.

  444. It's not a judgement, the second resurrection, the great white

  445. throne judgement. It's a sentencing because you're

  446. guilty. Romans 3, you'll utter not a

  447. word. Peter says be saved from this

  448. perverse generation. The word perverse, interesting,

  449. Greek scolios, scoliosis, crooked, wicked.

  450. And what you and I see in the world today is we don't see

  451. evolution, do we? Funny, we've still got monkeys,

  452. haven't we? How come those monkeys haven't

  453. just kicked on? Well, the next step.

  454. Why are all the monkeys gone? But what we do see, sadly, is

  455. devolution. We're acting more like animals.

  456. When the planes flew into the Twin Towers, Ruth Graham Lotz

  457. spoke and she said, you, you, you wonder why our children are

  458. lost. And you tell them not to act

  459. like animals. But they go to school and are

  460. educated and told that they are but animals.

  461. Those who gladly received the word.

  462. Not everybody was sighted.
