  1. This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching

  2. ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary

  3. Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.

  4. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's

  5. Word. They're not making up stories.

  6. They're not trying to figure out what they're going to teach.

  7. It's here. They teach what's here, and they

  8. expound on the scriptures. And this is what we need in this

  9. day. We need truth, not stories, not

  10. fables, not entertainment. I don't need to come up here and

  11. make you laugh and entertain you.

  12. We need the word of God. That is what changes us.

  13. That's what transforms us. Have you ever attended a church

  14. service where the pastor's message didn't come from a

  15. biblical passage? Today, many Internet preachers

  16. focus on few good sermons offering seven steps to success

  17. or reminding you that you are the victor, not the victim.

  18. But today Pastor Lewis emphasizes that genuine time

  19. with God should be rooted in His Word.

  20. True guidance and strength are not found in 2 minutes sermon

  21. clips and prosperity teachings, but by reading and spending time

  22. with God in His Word, the Bible. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the

  23. book of Jude chapter 1 as he begins his message apostates

    Jude 1 chapter mention

  24. described. Please turn in your Bibles with

  25. me, please, to the book of Jude. We're going to plug through this

  26. and we're going to finish it eventually.

  27. I promise you, eventually we will finish Jude.

  28. We'll go to the 12th verse. I'm going to go ahead and read,

  29. first of all, the verses that I plan to cover.

  30. And I have to admit, because of the content of the verses, it's

  31. not like it's going to be a whole lot of verses, but I

  32. believe that the Lord has some things to say to us in these

  33. verses that will be beneficial to all of us in our Christian

  34. walk. But starting at verse 12, he

  35. says this. These are spots in your love

  36. feasts while they feast with you without fear, serving only

  37. themselves. They are clouds without water,

  38. carried about by the winds. They're late autumn trees

  39. without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots, raging

  40. waves of the sea foaming up their own shame, wandering

  41. stars, for whom has reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

  42. Now Enoch the 7th from Adam prophesied about these men also

  43. saying, Behold, the Lord comes with 10 thousands of his Saints

  44. to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly

  45. among them, all their ungodly deeds which they have committed

  46. in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly

  47. sinners have spoken against him. So once again we see here that

  48. this book of Jude, which he gives us small book, but he

  49. gives us right before the book of Revelations and he, he gives

  50. us his book because of what's going on in his culture at that

  51. particular time. People were walking away from

  52. the faith, people were absconding from the faith,

  53. people were defecting from the faith, people were turning from

  54. the faith. And some of these were teachers

  55. who were teaching ungodly things to the Christians.

  56. And you found it necessary, He found it necessary to put this,

  57. this letter out as a warning to the people to let them know.

  58. Be careful, watch out, make sure you are alert, make sure your

  59. eyes are open, you're sober. Make sure that you understand

  60. truth and that you're not deceived.

  61. And this morning, my heart is echoing what it is that Jude is

  62. saying. And the reason why is because

  63. I'm seeing as I'm reading some things and I'm watching and I'm

  64. looking, I'm seeing that people are walking away from the

  65. church. People are walking away from the

  66. church. People are leaving the church.

  67. People are, are, are defecting from the Word of God.

  68. Pastors are leaving their pulpits and leaving the faith.

  69. Not just leaving their pulpits, they're leaving the faith.

  70. But it brings to light the things that Paul said back in

  71. the book of first Timothy. And I'm going to read it because

  72. it's I think it's important that we hear this before we go into

  73. talking about the description of these false teachers.

  74. But there's two things I want to read before I get into the text.

  75. First, first, first Timothy, chapter 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  76. You've read it before, but I think it's appropriate here.

  77. First Timothy chapter 4, verse one, it says this.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  78. Now the spirit expressly says that in the latter times some

  79. will depart from the faith. Why?

  80. Because they're giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines

  81. of demons. Verse 2 says speaking lies in

  82. hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot

  83. iron. Now I want you to go to Second

  84. Timothy, and in Second Timothy, there's a couple things I'm

  85. going to read. First, we're going to start with

  86. start at chapter 4, First chapter 4, looking at verse 3,

  87. it says for the time will come when they will not endure sound

  88. doctrine, but according to their own desires.

  89. That's so important. Listen to that.

  90. But according to their own desires, because they have

  91. itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers and

  92. verse 4 says, and they will turn their ears away from the truth,

  93. away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.

  94. And then I'm going to read one more back over in Second Timothy

  95. again here in Second Timothy, but chapter 3, starting at verse

  96. one, it says, but know this, that in the later that in the

  97. last days perilous times will come.

  98. And then it describes how it will impact certain men.

  99. It says for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,

  100. boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to parents,

  101. unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers without

  102. self-control, brutal, despisers of good traitors, headstrong,

  103. haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having

  104. a form of godliness but denying its power.

  105. And from such people turn away. So we have Paul giving this

  106. advice to Timothy, his young son in the faith who was a young

  107. pastor and he's saying, listen, understand something.

  108. And the latter times these things are going to happen.

  109. And it's also appropriate for us today.

  110. Back in I read something recently, I read that said back

  111. in 19, I think it was 1972, like 90% of the United States were

  112. Christian. Now it's less than 64% people

  113. walking away from the faith and a lot of the reasons why people

  114. are giving from walking away from the faith is is because

  115. they have differences with the Word of God.

  116. Now times have changed, the culture has changed, and the

  117. Word of God needs to change. No, it doesn't.

  118. Cultural differences. I want to live this way and the

  119. Word of God says I got to live that way.

  120. I'm not in agreement with it, so I'm walking away from it.

  121. These people I spoke to because they have been in some

  122. legalistic situations or in some legalistic church, religious

  123. kind of churches where you know, it was works based, was put

  124. condemnation on people instead of teaching both truth and

  125. grace. These people left because they

  126. feel like they just can't stand up to the standard of what their

  127. authority was trying to make them live up to.

  128. They can't stand up to it, so they want to walk away from it.

  129. It's easier for me not to be under any authority if I got to

  130. be under authority that I can't stand up to.

  131. So I'll just become an atheist and won't believe anything.

  132. Therefore, I don't have to worry about feeling condemned or

  133. feeling convicted about anything.

  134. I don't have to worry about it because I don't believe it.

  135. It doesn't matter whether we believe it or not.

  136. It doesn't make it not true. Truth is truth.

  137. Truth is truth, and just because I don't believe it doesn't make

  138. it so. I used to say, look, God said

  139. it, I believe it, and that settles it.

  140. No, God settled. God said it, that settles it.

  141. It doesn't matter whether I believe it or not.

  142. It's not settled because I believe it.

  143. It's not settled because you believe it.

  144. It's settled because God said it.

  145. The word of God is. It's to us.

  146. It is an aroma of life to those of us who believe.

  147. To those who don't believe is the aroma of death leading to

  148. death. But unfortunately, people are

  149. losing faith in the Word of God. They're losing faith in the word

  150. of God. They're losing, they're losing

  151. faith in the promises of God. And the reason why is because

  152. they don't know God. So they think that this God

  153. that's in the body, they think this God should be this way or

  154. he should be that way. God shouldn't 'cause people to

  155. suffer or let people suffer. They don't know God, that some

  156. of the best work he does in us is in our suffering.

  157. God is supposed to love everybody.

  158. He's supposed to love everybody, and everybody's supposed to love

  159. everybody. Yes, He does love, but there is

  160. some things that we are not to love, in some ways that we are

  161. not to love. They don't know God.

  162. And I've learned recently that you can know the Word of God and

  163. not know the God of the Word. We can quote Scripture, we can

  164. remember Scripture, We can do all those things.

  165. But if we don't know the God of the Scripture, those Scriptures

  166. doesn't mean anything. We got people sitting in

  167. seminaries who know the word of God.

  168. They know it, they've studied it, they get degrees in it, but

  169. they don't know the God of the Bible.

  170. And because of that, there's no change in their lives.

  171. And unfortunately, a lot of the lot of these men and are walking

  172. away from the faith at certain points.

  173. No Holy Spirit, no relationship, just a head knowledge of what's

  174. in here. Our hearts for you as pastors

  175. and anyone who comes up here and teach, Pastor Clark and myself,

  176. when we teach, we want to have the Word living in your hearts

  177. and in your lives and in our hearts and in our lives.

  178. We pray for the Word to live in us that we have a relationship

  179. with the God of the Word. We pray for your spiritual

  180. growth, that the knowledge of his will, that you would have

  181. the knowledge of his will inside of you.

  182. You understand it and spiritual understanding and and

  183. discernment, the knowledge of His will.

  184. We have teachers that come in, out and I'm going to say it

  185. again on Wednesday night. We have 5 teachers that come in

  186. here and they teach and they're teaching Old Testament.

  187. They're teaching Old Testament right now.

  188. We're going through the book of Psalms, but on Wednesday night

  189. we have Tom Brubaker, we got Will Thomas, we got Steve

  190. Eichelberger, Dave Trout, John Morris, and these guys are

  191. really bringing forth the scriptures, the truth.

  192. They're not making up stories. They're not trying to figure out

  193. what they're going to teach. It's here.

  194. They teach what's here, and they expound on the scriptures.

  195. And this is what we need in this day.

  196. We need truth, not stories, not fables, not entertainment.

  197. I don't need to come up here and make you laugh and entertain

  198. you. We need the Word of God.

  199. That is what changes us. That's what transforms us.

  200. That's what makes us look more and more like Jesus is the word

  201. of God. And we can't lose faith in the

  202. Word of God because the Bible says he's faithful even when

  203. we're not. It's the same word that brought

  204. forth the earth. It's the same word that said,

  205. let there be light in this bed. Light.

  206. Ever since no one's been able to put the light out.

  207. It's the same word that created you and me.

  208. It's the same word that we that we live by.

  209. We it says that certain things are going to happen and it has

  210. happened. It's the same word that says

  211. that we would need a savior and we did.

  212. It's the same word that says I'm going to give you a savior, and

  213. he did. Same word that says that every

  214. He would suffer on the cross and die, and he did.

  215. It's the same word that says that he would get up out of that

  216. grave, and he did. It's the same word that says

  217. He's coming back and He is. It's the same word, same word

  218. that saved our souls. It's the same word that brought

  219. us from darkness into light. The same word that brought us

  220. out of death and into his, the Kingdom of his dear Son.

  221. The same word, the same word that redeemed you and me, the

  222. same word by which we have forgiveness of sins.

  223. It's the same word. The same word.

  224. Let's not lose faith in this. This Bible and the one that you

  225. hold. This doesn't contain the word of

  226. God. It is the word of God and we

  227. have to believe that and trust it.

  228. Why am I saying that? Because what Jude is talking

  229. about here are people who walked away from the truth, who turned

  230. away from the truth, and they announced teaching things and

  231. saying things to try to get people to come after them.

  232. They're Antichrist, which means that they want people to follow

  233. them instead of Christ. They want to teach their own

  234. truth instead of the truth that is truth.

  235. The Bible says that. In fact if you look on your the

  236. title of this it probably say my says apostates deprived and

  237. doomed for a second. I just want to give a difference

  238. between apostates and the word backsliders We see both in the

  239. Bible. Well, one of the things that we

  240. know is that a backslider is a temporary condition.

  241. It's a lapse of of faith. It's a drifting away at some

  242. point where Christians will have a lapse in faith.

  243. And it may be because of something that happened, you

  244. know, maybe someone died that when you were very close to.

  245. So you get angry with God and for a while you stop going to

  246. church or stop praying or stop reading your Bible.

  247. These things happens. Sometimes temptation gets a hold

  248. of you and you start going back and reverting back, you know, to

  249. your old lifestyle. Sometimes those things happen,

  250. but at some point or another, because of the Holy Spirit

  251. that's in you and because God, the God that that saved you

  252. won't let you go but so far. And then the Spirit that's in

  253. you will bring you back. You won't walk away totally.

  254. But then there's a apostasy. Apostasy is more of a deliberate

  255. rejection of the Christian faith.

  256. It's a, it's a deliberate defection and, and, and, and,

  257. and, and you reject the truth. Truth is, in fact, you never

  258. really believed it in the first place.

  259. You professed it. I'm going to give you a

  260. definition of an apostate. An apostate is not, and this is

  261. from where this one warns where it's being.

  262. I kind of like this definition. It says an apostate is not a

  263. true believer who has abandoned his salvation.

  264. You know, people try to say, hey, look, if you're an

  265. apostate, then isn't that proof that, you know, salvation is not

  266. necessarily eternal? You know, I mean that you can

  267. lose your salvation. No, no.

  268. When words you say that an apostate is not a true believer

  269. who has abandoned his salvation. He is a person who has professed

  270. to accept the truth and trust the Savior, then turns from the

  271. faith. Bible says, how are we saved?

  272. Yeah, we are saved when we confess with our mouths the Lord

  273. Jesus Christ, but also believe in our hearts that God has

  274. raised him from the dead. That's got to be there as well.

  275. So an apostate is more of a deliberate and it's more of a

  276. final situation because these, you know, the apostate never

  277. really believed, never truly believed.

  278. And this is who Jude is talking about here, these men who came

  279. into the church crepin to the church.

  280. I mean, looks like just like like any meios that's sitting

  281. here could be a person sitting beside you.

  282. We have no idea. Look like us, talk like us, act

  283. like us. You know us.

  284. If we hear somebody say hey, blessed and all be favored, you

  285. know, maybe that means that they truly believe.

  286. If they can hold those conversations and say those

  287. slang words, may that means that they you know, the gospel slang

  288. words may that means that they truly believe, but not

  289. necessarily. But only God can see the heart.

  290. We can't. Only God can see the heart.

  291. God knows the heart. So this is who he's talking

  292. about. Those who have walked away from

  293. the faith and decided that they want to try to bring people to

  294. themselves because they don't want to be under the authority

  295. of Jesus Christ. So he says here that these are

  296. spots in your love feasts while they feast with you without

  297. fear, serving only themselves. Spots in your love feast now at

  298. first mention, you know, you can almost imagine like you know, a

  299. shirt, for example, white shirt. You know what I mean?

  300. If I came up here with a white shirt on and and the whole shirt

  301. is clean except for one spot And if you catch me after eating,

  302. sometimes you might catch me with a spot on my shirt.

  303. You know, I tend to get something on me all the time.

  304. I don't know why how that happens.

  305. No comments there. My poor wife has to always try

  306. to get these spots out after I get finished.

  307. But anyway, you would think it's like a a white shirt or

  308. something though. And then also you see a spot on

  309. it. Your eye goes directly to the

  310. spot. So it's like a spot in your love

  311. fees. But that's not what Jude is

  312. talking about here. What Jude is talking about here

  313. when he says is there spots in your love fees, he means that

  314. these are in the Greek. It means hidden reefs.

  315. Whole different meaning. Spots, hidden reefs.

  316. It's a nautical term, hidden reefs or hidden rocks.

  317. These are things that lie under the surface of the water that

  318. you can't see, and you won't even know that they're there

  319. until they've already done damage to the bottom of your

  320. ship. Captains try to be aware of

  321. these. They try to watch out for these

  322. with their ships when they're going into certain waters, but

  323. you can't see them because they're below the surface and

  324. they cause damage. And before you even realize that

  325. they're there is too late. They've already caused damage.

  326. They're already put a hole with the bottom of your ship and you

  327. starting to sink. But the same thing happens in

  328. the church with false teachers. Sometimes before people even

  329. realize that this is a false teacher, that this is someone

  330. who doesn't believe what we believe is sometimes too late.

  331. They've already done damage. They've always.

  332. They've already caused some people to stumble.

  333. They've already rebelled against leadership.

  334. They've already started to divide the church.

  335. They've already caused damage. We have to remember what brought

  336. down the Titanic. It wasn't the iceberg that they

  337. saw on top. It was a damage that they

  338. couldn't see underneath the jagged edges of the iceberg that

  339. was underneath that did the damage that brought that ship

  340. down. And that's what Jude is saying

  341. here. We got to be aware because these

  342. false teachers can sometimes be just like hidden reefs, hidden

  343. rocks, and we don't know that they're there until they've

  344. already done damage. It's a sad thing when you have

  345. that kind of situation arise where you just don't know.

  346. We don't know. We don't know until we see the

  347. effects of it. Then we realize that something

  348. has happened. We've already been the, the,

  349. we've been the victims of something that was trying to

  350. divide and, and tear up the church.

  351. I pray, I pray that here in Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland,

  352. that we have so much love here and that we have so much an

  353. awareness of the Word of God. It's going to be really hard for

  354. someone to come in and try to deceive you guys because there's

  355. so many of you who study the word of God.

  356. You don't just study the Word of God when you come here.

  357. It's not when you just hear me, Clark or any of the teachers on

  358. Wednesday night that you guys are hearing the word of God.

  359. You guys are always reading and studying the Word of God.

  360. That's why we had a conversations that we have with

  361. one another because you're always in the Word.

  362. It's going to be very difficult for someone to come in here and

  363. to try to teach something that is ungodly in here.

  364. The ears would hear it. I would pray that our ears would

  365. hear it immediately and we'd be able to stop it before we cause

  366. any damage underneath the surface spots in our love

  367. feasts. And and then the Bible says, and

  368. they do it without fear. And just to go ahead and, and

  369. follow up on the word love feast.

  370. We have agape feast. And that's exactly what these

  371. love feasts are. We have agape feast that we have

  372. every now and then potlucks or whatever you want to call them,

  373. where people come and bring their food.

  374. Everybody loves those, Everybody loves those.

  375. But what Jude is saying is that these false teachers will go in

  376. to these love feasts and they would socialize with everybody

  377. like everything is fine and talk like we all believe the same

  378. thing. Meanwhile, they have motives

  379. that are ungodly. This has been Living Waters of

  380. Grace, a ministry of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland in

  381. Greensburg, PA Pastor Lewis Harrell has been teaching

  382. through the book of Jude. This is a book of warning as the

  383. audience that Jude was writing to was coming under attack from

  384. false teachers. Even in the early days of the

  385. church, there were teachers who claimed to have a unique

  386. revelation from God that superseded Scripture.

  387. Pastor Lewis wants you to be sure to be on your guard against

  388. those teachers today as they will try to distract you from

  389. following the way of Jesus. By focusing on what God's Word

  390. says, you can call out false teachers for what they are and

  391. stay on the good path. Do you want to hear more
