  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. The repentance that Peter's preaching about is a change of

  6. mind. You might be here today and

  7. God's challenging you to change your thinking, change your mind.

  8. He's not telling you you got to be perfect.

  9. You got to act perfect because you can't be perfect.

  10. Only He's perfect. But He's saying that I will take

  11. your hand and show you a new way to live.

  12. And I was at that point ready for a new way to live, and he

  13. gave me new life. No matter how hard you and I

  14. try, we cannot live up to God's standard of perfection.

  15. Our hearts are stained by sin and we are unworthy of God's

  16. presence. But Pastor Clark reminds us that

  17. by the blood of Jesus, we have a new way to gain access to the

  18. Father's throne room. When we repent of our sins and

  19. commit our lives to Jesus, he calls us to a new way of living.

  20. While we will never live up to that perfect standard, Jesus

  21. lifts our heads. It reminds us that in him we are

  22. made righteous and holy. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  23. Chapter 5 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  24. So here we are today, where we're viewed by people in the

  25. House and the Congress and in the White House as troublemakers

  26. that need to be silenced. Where are you and me in regard

  27. to sharing our faith? I met with the evangelist at the

  28. campus of Penn State College last week.

  29. He's been a friend of mine for years, and he stands in front of

  30. the science building. All these bright young brains

  31. coming out of Penn State to go into incredible careers and he

  32. would just talk and preach and share and give positions on what

  33. is truth and students would engage with him.

  34. Some would argue, some would listen, some would end up

  35. believing and become Christians. Well, Gary told me now, he said,

  36. Clark, it's so bad up here that anybody that's a student that

  37. hears this will be really apprehensive about engaging me

  38. in any kind of dialogue. Because they said what'll happen

  39. is, is that the students will get blackballed on Facebook or

  40. social media and they'll be held out as being like right wing

  41. crazy people because they are interested in the gospel of

  42. Christ. And they're concerned that

  43. that'll be set up somehow in their resumes and they won't be

  44. able to get jobs. And so they're like running

  45. silent. Fortunately, he's he's allowed

  46. to continually do that. Quite a wealthy man many years

  47. ago made an endowment to the college that this would be the

  48. deal, that there would be a preacher in front of the science

  49. building until Jesus came being funded by some very wealthy

  50. person. So they can't throw Gary off

  51. campus. They just got to put up with

  52. him, which is. Which is pretty cool, you know?

  53. Yeah, So you have the situation, though, that in Jerusalem at the

  54. time, I mean, it was definitely bad and and I would say worse

  55. than what maybe we think we're experiencing right now.

  56. The captain went with the officers and brought them

  57. without violence. They feared the people would

  58. unless they should be stoned. And when they brought them, they

  59. set them before the council. And the high priest asked them

  60. saying, did not we strictly command you not to teach in his

  61. name? Like what?

  62. What's up with you guys? We told you you can't do this.

  63. And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and

  64. intended to bring this man's blood on us.

  65. So what? What's amazing is there was such

  66. a a power in the early church that the whole city was aware of

  67. the gospel. Unfortunately, the whole city of

  68. Greensburg, I'm sure, is not aware of the Gospel, nor the

  69. state of Pennsylvania, nor the United States of America, let

  70. alone the rest of the world. Why?

  71. Because we as Christians have been, I think, apathetic or

  72. complacent in regard to sharing our faith when we have

  73. opportunities to share it. I'm not talking about pushing

  74. people with this stuff. There was a time when people

  75. tell me about this before I believed I didn't want to hear

  76. them. So I don't want to, I don't want

  77. to hear about this stuff. So people would, you know,

  78. respect me and my opinion and maybe pray for me, but they

  79. wouldn't bug me about this stuff all the time.

  80. But there has to be this opportunity to have conversation

  81. with people that have views that are different than yours and

  82. mine, not out of judgment, but out of love.

  83. You want lost people to know that there's a God who loves

  84. them and cares about them no matter what they've done.

  85. He's a forgiving, merciful God that has to be in our hearts as

  86. Christians, front and center. And the positions of that come

  87. up, you know, nowadays in regard to human sexuality or, you know,

  88. issues of when life is truly in the womb and positions of morals

  89. and creation and all these things that are obviously very

  90. viable truths that need to be communicated right to people

  91. that don't know the other side. I mean, I think it's good to

  92. have a, a, a conversation with someone who's an evolutionist,

  93. you know, ridicule them and make fun of them and call them

  94. stupid, whatever you want to find out why they think the way

  95. they think and what causes them to have the position they have.

  96. And then share some information that you have regarding Genesis

  97. and what the Bible teaches about how mankind came into existence

  98. in regard to the issue of jobs right now and all the people

  99. that or complaining, there's no one that's out there that wants

  100. to work well. No one ever asks the question,

  101. why is there less people physically able to work?

  102. Well, when you think about the number of lives that have been

  103. taken over the last 30 years, if they weren't taken, there'd be a

  104. lot of people that would be here that could work or do whatever.

  105. They're not here. They weren't given a chance.

  106. They were taken out before they were born.

  107. So these kind of situations are things that have to be

  108. communicated. And so are we afraid?

  109. Are we different than these people here?

  110. Because, well, what if they don't like me anymore?

  111. What if they hate me? Or what if they reject me?

  112. Or what if they you know, what if what if I got fired from my

  113. job because I I have a position of Christian principles.

  114. That's something you have to look down deep inside and know

  115. that God does expect us to speak out about truth.

  116. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so whom he's delivered out of

  117. the hands of the enemy. So these guys are being accused

  118. of filling the city with the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus

  119. with that's that's a good thing, right?

  120. And then these guys are complaining, well, you're

  121. bringing this man's blood on us. They forget that months ago when

  122. they were standing and Pilot was there saying this man is

  123. innocent. I refuse to be held culpable for

  124. his demise. He's washing his hands as a

  125. symbol that he's not guilty. Pilot's saying, you know, I'm

  126. not going to be guilty of this man's blood on my hands.

  127. And they yelled, yelled out, well, let his blood be on our

  128. hands. The masses cried out.

  129. So it's already true that the man's blood of the crucifixion

  130. of Christ is on everyone who's rejected Christ and who's lived

  131. willful, sinful lives to realize they're responsible for the

  132. crucifixion. So Peter and the other apostles

  133. answered and said we ought to obey God rather than men.

  134. Now the Bible tells us that we have authorities in office to

  135. keep the Commonwealth safe from the governing officials to the

  136. police departments, all these kind of things.

  137. We're told to respect these people that have rollover us.

  138. That's in the Bible. But there comes a time where you

  139. may have to decide that there's certain things you're being told

  140. you can or cannot do that are against your constitutional

  141. rights and your Christian liberties.

  142. Where you can say, well, I respect your opinion, but I have

  143. to obey God rather than man to stand up for what the truth is.

  144. And this is what Peter said. Now, this guy was a guy that was

  145. a wimp, freaking out whenever they asked him.

  146. Before Jesus was crucified, you were with him, weren't you one

  147. of his followers? No, I never knew him.

  148. I never saw him. He's cursing.

  149. You know, he's he's he's doing all he can to get out of the

  150. issue of being connected with Jesus.

  151. How different it is now that he's still with the power of the

  152. Holy Spirit and he's able to boldly say we ought to obey God

  153. rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up

  154. Jesus, whom you murdered by hanging on a tree.

  155. Him God has exalted to his right hand to be Prince and savior.

  156. That word Prince is translated as pioneer.

  157. He was the first and only one that could die and come to life

  158. again through resurrection. And because of what he's done,

  159. we're all followers of him. We're also going to be

  160. resurrected on that final day. We have life everlasting because

  161. of what Christ has done for us. And then he continues preaching.

  162. He says him, God has exalted to his right hand to be Prince and

  163. Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

  164. That's a good news thing, right? It's like repentance is turning

  165. direction. Like I know my own life, you

  166. know, and you know your life. There came a point in life where

  167. I was hell bound. I was going on, I was on that

  168. highway to hell, you know, and, and I didn't care.

  169. And I that's the way I was. And this is how I rolled.

  170. And this is what my life was like.

  171. And then by the grace of God, through the prayers of a godly

  172. mother and other people, praying for a son that was wayward and

  173. lost and clueless and proud and arrogant and self-centered, that

  174. my heart would be softened and I would be slightly interested in

  175. this message of forgiveness in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  176. So at 20 years old, I began to think there has to be more to

  177. life than what I'm living and how I'm living.

  178. And I wasn't happy anymore. I wasn't peaceful, I wasn't

  179. satisfied. I, I didn't have any peace in my

  180. life, had no joy. And then I'm confronted with

  181. this message of the gospel and it began to really get to me and

  182. it began to make me realize I needed to change my evil ways.

  183. Remember that song by Santana? You've got to change your evil

  184. ways. That was a big song back then

  185. when I and I was, I was enjoying my evil ways.

  186. Well, all of a sudden I wasn't having fun in evil ways anymore

  187. and I knew I needed to change. But how do I change?

  188. I can't change myself. And then the Lord began to teach

  189. me that. I'll change you, Clark.

  190. I'll make you new. I'll give you a new heart, a new

  191. way of looking at things, a new mind.

  192. I'll give you my Bible, the Word.

  193. Or you can learn and understand what it means to be a follower

  194. of me. That I'm still learning today

  195. how to follow Him deeper and closer.

  196. It doesn't end just when you become a believer.

  197. The first day, it's a constant every day changing my mind about

  198. the way I am and things that God wants to do different in my

  199. heart or help me to see things in a deeper perspective.

  200. The repentance that Peter's preaching about is a change of

  201. mind. You might be here today and

  202. God's challenging you to change your thinking, change your mind.

  203. He's not telling you you've got to be perfect.

  204. You've got to act perfect because you can't be perfect.

  205. Only He's perfect. But He's saying that I will take

  206. your hand and show you a new way to live.

  207. And I was at that point ready for a new way to live.

  208. And He gave me new life. He said if anyone is in Christ

  209. as a new creation, old things pass away.

  210. Behold, all things become new. And he said, and we are his

  211. witnesses. Peter said, we are the

  212. witnesses. That's what we are in this

  213. church as Christians, as people, as brothers and sisters.

  214. You know, you go to places, you know people I, I don't know and

  215. vice versa. You have an opportunity to

  216. spread this gospel, this witness to give people an opportunity to

  217. understand what the Lord has done for you and what he can do

  218. for them. We are witnesses to these

  219. things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to

  220. those who obey him. I'm so excited studying a book

  221. of the Acts right now personally, because I know it's

  222. energizing my life as a pastor and the other leaders in the

  223. church. But I'm sure it's energizing you

  224. too, to share the Lord. And I get more texts and phone

  225. calls now than I have in a long time.

  226. Pray for this person. I'm sharing the Lord with them.

  227. Pray for that person that doesn't know Jesus or, you know,

  228. this person's closed or this person became a believer,

  229. whatever. I mean, it's, it's exciting

  230. because the witness is what gets the gospel out.

  231. And so the culture, as I said, can change based upon us talking

  232. more about the good news, right? Talking about the good news,

  233. telling people the good news. So there's this guy Gamaliel

  234. here, and we're gonna read this and then we'll finish up in this

  235. section. Gamaliel was a a leader in the

  236. Jewish sect of the Pharisees, a very bright guy.

  237. The Apostle Paul, before he got saved, sat at the feet of

  238. Gamaliel. He was a very, very bright guy.

  239. As a matter of fact, when he died, he was such a strict Jew

  240. that they said when he died, the Jewish people weren't that on

  241. fire about their faith anymore and they began to become laxed

  242. in their following of the law and all that kind of stuff.

  243. But anyway, he's going to give some advice here.

  244. When they heard what Peter said this, they were furious and

  245. plotted to kill them. I mean, this is the first time

  246. in accident. They're just not mad and put him

  247. in prison. We're gonna kill these guys and

  248. get rid of him. Then one in the council stood

  249. up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, held in

  250. respect by all the people. He was respected by everyone and

  251. commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little

  252. while. Calm down, guys, Quiet down.

  253. Put these guys out. I want to give you some other

  254. perspective here. And he said that the men of

  255. Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding

  256. these men. Think about it.

  257. He's speaking some sanity to him.

  258. For some time ago, Thaddeus rose up claiming to be somebody.

  259. This was a cult leader. A number of men, about 400,

  260. joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed

  261. him were scattered and came to nothing.

  262. So in other words, this, this leader, at this time, this guy

  263. Thaddeus, wasn't really effective when he died.

  264. His movement, his, his plan, whatever it was, ended up coming

  265. to nothing. Verse 37 After this man, there's

  266. another guy they mentioned in their history.

  267. Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away

  268. many people after him. He also perished, and all who

  269. obeyed him were dispersed. And now I say to you, keep away

  270. from these men and let them alone.

  271. For if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing.

  272. But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest you even be

  273. found to fight against God. Isn't that fascinating?

  274. Over 2000 years ago, this thing has not ended being nothing, has

  275. it? We're all here today, recipients

  276. of the power of the gospel. Every one of these men, these

  277. apostles except for one, the apostle John, were martyred,

  278. Very serious ways of dying, being speared to death, being

  279. hung, being put upside down on a cross, on and on and on.

  280. Horrific deaths every apostle had except for John, They tried

  281. to destroy him in boiling water, didn't work.

  282. And he ended up this time of old age after down the road, after

  283. he wrote the Book of Revelation. So he speaks truth to these guys

  284. to think about what they're doing, and they agreed with him.

  285. And this Gamaliel isn't even a Christian and he's not really

  286. fascinated or interested in, even though he knows about the

  287. miracles that have occurred. You know, there's a lot of

  288. people that that believe historically that Jesus is real,

  289. that he died, that he rose again, that he did miracles, but

  290. they still don't believe. That's ironic.

  291. It's just the pride in the heart that keeps us from humbling

  292. ourselves and surrendering our lives to the will of God.

  293. I fought that for years. I, I didn't, I turned my back on

  294. this stuff. I'm so thankful that God and His

  295. grace turned my life around so that I could commit my life to

  296. following Jesus and wanting to be a witness, wanting to be a

  297. better witness. So they agreed with him.

  298. And when they had called the apostles and beaten them, they

  299. commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus and

  300. they let them go. This wasn't a calm beating.

  301. It was 39 lashes so bad that it ripped their skin apart.

  302. People died from a blood hemorrhage from these kind of

  303. beatings. So it wasn't a light discipline,

  304. but they told them you guys should not speak in the name of

  305. Jesus and let them go. It's interesting how it's

  306. translated here. You should not speak in a

  307. they're not saying you, you will not speak in the name of Jesus.

  308. They're trying to like convince them because of the beating and

  309. all this other stuff, you, you know, you really shouldn't be

  310. doing this anymore. You're just creating more

  311. problems for yourselves and pain and suffering.

  312. So they departed from the presence of the Council,

  313. rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his

  314. name, Remarkable men that they were actually proud that they

  315. went through this beating and the suffering and they were

  316. associated with Jesus Christ. And I pray that would be the

  317. case for us. Whenever we get pushed back or

  318. people don't like us anymore, they, you know, condemn us or

  319. accuse us or slander us or whatever about whatever in life

  320. that we don't really focus on what people say or think.

  321. We're just glad that we're affiliated with the Holy

  322. Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that we are

  323. representatives of the Creator God, and that we have the

  324. privilege to live for Him and speak on behalf of Him and share

  325. the Gospel with whoever will listen.

  326. They were, they counted it worthy to suffer shame for His

  327. name. Whenever you feel embarrassed or

  328. shame because you're a follower of Jesus, read this chapter

  329. again and be encouraged that you don't have to hold your head

  330. down in shame. You can hold your head up high

  331. knowing that one day, whenever you stand before the Lord and

  332. give an account of how you lived your life, the things that'll

  333. matter at that time is what you did for Jesus.

  334. How you spoke up for Him, how you lived for Him, how you cared

  335. for people. You're not responsible for the

  336. results of who believes or who doesn't believe.

  337. We can't make anybody believe that God uses your life and mine

  338. to be a bridge between lost people in the Kingdom of God.

  339. Then it finishes in verse 42. It says in daily, in the temple

  340. and in every house. They did not cease teaching and

  341. preaching Jesus as the Christ. Isn't that a wonderful way of

  342. ending this chapter daily in the temple and in every house.

  343. They did not cease. In other words, the directions

  344. they were given by the governing authorities to not speak in the

  345. name of Jesus was not followed. They did not stop teaching and

  346. preaching Jesus as the Christ and I believe that's what we're

  347. to do. We, you know, we don't stop

  348. teaching or preaching the gospel because of what people say or

  349. what they threaten us with. We just keep on doing what we're

  350. called to do, right? To be witnesses of the Lord.

  351. I pray this week He would give you opportunity to love on

  352. people, love on your neighbors, love on your enemy, love on your

  353. family, your friends, and share humbly the good news with

  354. someone. Ask the Lord to give you one

  355. person this week just to say something about God, what He's

  356. done for you, how He's blessed you, how He's loved you, how

  357. He's forgiven you, and that He wants to do that with every

  358. human being, doesn't he? He wants to do that for every

  359. human being. And the only way they'll know is

  360. by us telling them, May God give you strength and me strength to

  361. do that. We're so glad you joined us

  362. today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  363. Pastor Clark is teaching through the Book of Acts, which is the

  364. only book that chronicles the history of the early church

  365. immediately after Jesus's ascension.

  366. It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move

  367. outwards, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of

  368. the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small

  369. group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit

  370. empowered movement that transformed the known world.

  371. Acts is not just a history lesson.

  372. It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are

  373. surrendered, obedient and filled with the Holy Spirit.

  374. Their perseverance still inspires us today.

  375. May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in

  376. our own time. We hope today's message

  377. encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
