  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. We think there's got to be strings attached, so there's got

  6. to be something else other than disgrace.

  7. And then when God's grace begins to apprehend our heart, we begin

  8. to experience God in a way that humanly can't be comprehended

  9. apart from grace. Grace is what gives you the

  10. ability to forgive and forget. Grace is the ability for you to

  11. receive forgiveness and accept the fact that Jesus did forgive

  12. you of all your sins. The word grace comes from the

  13. Greek word charis, which means unmerited favor and the divine

  14. influence upon the heart as reflected in life.

  15. Today. Pastor Clark will share many

  16. examples of what grace is and what it looks like in the life

  17. of a follower of Jesus. As you listen today, maybe ask

  18. yourself, does the grace of Jesus mark my life?

  19. And if the answer is no, then you'll want to listen to the end

  20. of today's broadcast as Pastor Clark shares more.

  21. When the grace of God marks your life, that same grace begins to

  22. spill out into the lives of those around you.

  23. You will begin to overflow. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  24. Chapter 11 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  25. Acts Chapter 11 and we're reading about the the issue here

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  26. of Peter who had thus given the gospel to Cornelius a Gentile in

  27. Acts chapter 10. And now Peter's heading up back

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  28. to Jerusalem and we'll see what he has to deal with here.

  29. So it says in verse one. Now the apostles and brethren

  30. who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the

  31. word of God. So these guys in Jerusalem are

  32. legalists, they're Christians, but they're under the bondage of

  33. religion. They believe that in order to be

  34. a real Christian, you had to be become a Jew and you had to be

  35. circumcised, and you had to follow the traditions and the

  36. laws of Moses in order to be a real believer.

  37. They had prejudice against Gentiles, Jewish people and

  38. Gentiles didn't get along back in those days.

  39. In some cases today there's still issues between these two

  40. races. But nonetheless, it was all

  41. based upon this idea that this is the way you do worship, this

  42. is the way you do faith, this is the way you follow Jesus.

  43. And the problem in in the world of Christianity Today is that

  44. you have all these different denominations with everybody

  45. sort of having a preference of how things should be done.

  46. And we need to have our hearts open to the fact that the Lord

  47. works in many, many different churches in different ways with

  48. the same gospel. If a church is a Bible church,

  49. and it's a church that believes in the Trinity and the virgin

  50. birth and the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  51. and the Bible being the inherent word of God, that's the

  52. foundation. Everything else is up to

  53. negotiation. Whether someone uses guitars or

  54. drums or candles or incense, those things are really

  55. secondary, aren't they? But many times people get

  56. uptight about different things and how people do things.

  57. So the Jewish people here at this time were very, very

  58. struggling in regard to Peter because he had spent time in the

  59. House of Cornelius, Peter being Jewish, Cornelius being a

  60. Gentile. So when Peter came up to

  61. Jerusalem, those are the circumcision contended with him

  62. saying you went into uncircumcised men and ate with

  63. them. I mean, that's a big deal.

  64. Back in those days. You do something like that.

  65. You are going against all your core beliefs that you've ever

  66. had as a Jewish person. And as a result, they had this

  67. struggle and they had this difficulty.

  68. And so Peter explained it to them in order from the

  69. beginning, saying, I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a

  70. trance I saw a vision and object descending like a great sheep

  71. let down from heaven by four corners.

  72. And it came to me. And when I observed it intently

  73. and considered, I saw 4 footed animals of the earth, wild

  74. beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.

  75. And I heard a voice saying to me, Rise, Peter, kill and eat.

  76. But I said, not so Lord, for nothing common or unclean has at

  77. any time entered my mouth. But the voice answered me again

  78. from heaven. What God has cleansed you must

  79. not call common. Now this was done three times,

  80. and all were drawn up again into heaven.

  81. And so we see this, this vision that Peter had, and he grew up

  82. as a Jew. He grew up with all these

  83. traditions and he was used to doing things a certain way.

  84. And God is preparing him now to take the gospel to Gentile

  85. people, to be with people that he would normally not want to be

  86. around, that he would consider unclean.

  87. And so God gave him this vision and, and Peter had to have

  88. everything like 3 times. If you remember, the Lord told

  89. him he was going to deny him three times, right?

  90. And then after Peter's denial and he got right with God again,

  91. the Lord asked him a question three times.

  92. Do you love me, Peter? Sort of hard headed, right?

  93. Thick skin or whatever you want to call it.

  94. He just was a different kind of individual.

  95. And the Lord had to make sure he understood this vision.

  96. That's not one time, but three times.

  97. So I think we're all a lot like that.

  98. We need to hear things more than one time, especially when

  99. they're from the Bible, because it takes a while for things to

  100. to settle in and for us to consider what it is that the

  101. Holy Spirit wants us to understand when we're hearing

  102. the words, when we're reading the word, when we're being

  103. taught the word. And so in this specific vision,

  104. all these UN kosher animals are in this blanket and he's given

  105. the permission by God that he can now eat these things that he

  106. was at one time told it would be a terrible sin, an abomination

  107. actually to eat these kind of things as a Jewish person and

  108. even challenges the the Lord in regard to this one.

  109. In verse 7, when the Lord says rise, Peter kill and eat, he

  110. said, not so Lord, for nothing common or unclean has at any

  111. time entered my mouth. But then the Lord from heaven

  112. speaks what God has cleansed you must not call common.

  113. So about the third time this happened, Peter began to be more

  114. open to something. Perhaps he didn't quite

  115. understand yet. Now you got to understand in in

  116. the Christian life and and learning about the Lord, Not

  117. everything dawns on us all the sudden, right?

  118. We don't grasp everything clearly.

  119. Many times it takes a while to really understand what the

  120. Bible's saying in certain areas. Some things are more difficult

  121. to understand. And a big issue in Christianity

  122. is it's a, it's a faith and I'm going to call it a religion.

  123. It's a movement of God's spirit, supernatural that is based upon

  124. grace, right, based upon grace. And we're not really able to

  125. understand grace or receive grace the way God intends us to

  126. experience grace. Grace is liberating.

  127. Grace is freeing. Grace is transformative.

  128. Paul was an apostle of grace. Everything he taught is about

  129. the grace of God. That none of us deserve

  130. anything. None of us have the capacity to

  131. earn anything. Grace is a gift.

  132. And when we first hear about grace, it's almost too good to

  133. be true. We think there's got to be

  134. strings attached or there's got to be something else other than

  135. disgrace. And then when God's grace begins

  136. to apprehend our heart, we begin to experience God in a way that

  137. humanly can't be comprehended apart from grace.

  138. Grace is what gives you the ability to forgive and forget.

  139. Grace is the ability for you to receive forgiveness and accept

  140. the fact that Jesus did forgive you of all your sins.

  141. Grace is the ability to give other people some latitude

  142. without being critical or judgmental.

  143. Grace is to be able to forgive a Pagan or pray for people who

  144. don't know Christ. Grace is to be able to live in a

  145. country that is so divided that all you want to do is think

  146. about ways that you can tell people about Jesus.

  147. Because that's the only answer to the unbelieving, Pagan,

  148. immoral mindset, the grace of God.

  149. We can't respond or behave or act any differently as a fallen

  150. people apart from the grace of God changing our hearts and

  151. making us like Jesus. And so Peter is now about ready

  152. to understand grace in a way that he's never experienced

  153. before. And so as he finishes this

  154. vision, he's done with this vision.

  155. It says in verse 11, soon as this vision is done in the in

  156. the, the cloth in the blanket goes back up into heaven.

  157. At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I

  158. was, where he was having been sent to me from Caesarea.

  159. Three men stood there. He just heard three times God's

  160. truth regarding grace and three persons represents the Trinity.

  161. It's interesting how numbers are so significant in the Bible.

  162. The three, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  163. One, God manifests in three persons.

  164. So there's three men standing at the house.

  165. These men were sent from Caesarea.

  166. These are Gentiles now up until this point, before the vision,

  167. if they would have been at the door, he might have said, well,

  168. nice meeting you. There's a bed and breakfast down

  169. the road. You can go there.

  170. I'll catch up with you later outside.

  171. You would never invite a Gentile into your house.

  172. That's how dark the discrimination and prejudice

  173. was. So in verse 12 it says then the

  174. Spirit told me to go with them, dotting nothing, doubting

  175. nothing. He listened to the Holy Spirit

  176. and he knew completely that this was what God had ordained him to

  177. do, to meet these three guys and to go with him.

  178. He was told this in the vision back in chapter 10.

  179. We know not only did he go with them, but he invited him into

  180. the house and he, he took care of them for a while and fed them

  181. and, and all this bondage of prejudice was completely

  182. destroyed and broken down, wasn't existing anymore.

  183. Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me and we entered

  184. the man's house. Now Peter didn't go into as much

  185. details of what happened in chapter 10 because you got to

  186. realize he's talking to legalists.

  187. He's very careful in keeping the main focus of the message very

  188. clear and simple to accept. He didn't get into the thing

  189. that God said to Cornelius was an honorable man.

  190. He he gave offerings or whatever.

  191. He didn't set it up to justify anything and the and the Gentile

  192. mindset that would be unacceptable to a Jewish

  193. authority or Jewish spiritual leader at the time.

  194. So Peter was wise enough when he went, he didn't go himself.

  195. He needed some witnesses because he has to now give an account

  196. before the leaders in Jerusalem, what he did, why he was there,

  197. what went on, what actually happened.

  198. And these six brethren with him were witnesses.

  199. So we enter the man's house, verse 13, And he told us how he

  200. had seen an Angel standing in his house, who said to him, send

  201. men to Joppa. This is where Peter was living

  202. with Simon the Tanner at the time, and call for Simon.

  203. His surname is Peter. Who will tell you words by which

  204. you and all your household will be saved.

  205. And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, is

  206. upon us at the beginning that the irony of this whole

  207. situation is that Peter is a apostle.

  208. He's a preacher, He's gifted. And I'm sure he had a big plan

  209. in this message. He might have had three points,

  210. five points, 6 points. He was just getting started.

  211. And the Holy Spirit fell down and said, Peter, you don't need

  212. to say anything else. I'm going to save these people

  213. supernaturally. And the Holy Spirit fell and

  214. they believed and they got saved.

  215. And I love this because Peter didn't say, Lord, I'm not done

  216. with my message yet. Peter's learning to trust God

  217. more obviously and depend on him more.

  218. And so the Holy Spirit falls on these people, and he says to

  219. these authorities in Jerusalem, what we saw, what we

  220. experienced, me and the six witnesses and all the people in

  221. the house, the same thing that happened to us back in Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  222. chapter 1 and 2, when the Holy Spirit fell in the upper room.

  223. And 120 people had experienced this phenomena of the baptism of

  224. the Holy Spirit and had the evidence of that specific time

  225. of tongues. And there was other times in

  226. Acts where the Spirit fell that tongues weren't manifest, but

  227. nonetheless they're a legitimate gift.

  228. And they were manifest in the beginning of Pentecost and in

  229. this case, and it was so important that they would

  230. experience salvation the same way the Jews did as Gentiles.

  231. So the Jewish people wouldn't be able to say, well, this isn't

  232. legitimate, they didn't have this experience or whatever.

  233. And so I remembered the the word of the Lord, how he said, John

  234. indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the

  235. Holy Spirit. If therefore God gave them the

  236. same gift as he gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus

  237. Christ, who is I that I could withstand God.

  238. So he he throws it back on them and just ask the question.

  239. He's humble when he's sharing this with these people, these

  240. leaders, and he's not pushy. He's just stating the facts.

  241. When they heard these things, they became silent.

  242. And that's a miracle in and of itself for these Jewish leaders

  243. to not come back with some kind of altercation or defense that

  244. this isn't legitimate. It says when they heard these

  245. things, they became silent and they glorified God, saying then

  246. God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.

  247. Isn't it wonderful that there is no discrimination from God our

  248. Creator? That all men are created equal?

  249. No one is better than anyone else.

  250. No race is better than anyone else.

  251. No country is better than anyone else.

  252. We're all level at the foot of the cross, aren't we all have

  253. sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  254. There's none that doeth good. No, not one.

  255. The Bible says that's the whole human race to God in his mercy

  256. through the gospel chooses to save people and continually

  257. saves people over and over and over again through the simple

  258. preaching of the word. And what excites me whenever I

  259. read this, I think about even today as a pastor, I'm here

  260. endeavoring to want to do the best I can to to feed you guys

  261. and give you what the scriptures are saying.

  262. But I'm not stupid enough or foolish enough to think that God

  263. cannot circumvent what it is I'm saying and speak to you

  264. individually while you're sitting here and you're hearing

  265. something from God that has to do with your life and where

  266. you're at and what's happening with you that I didn't even say

  267. or talk about today. Somehow God does meets you here

  268. in your seat as you're hearing His word.

  269. He talks to you about things that He wants you to know about,

  270. things he wants you to consider or reflect upon.

  271. And so Peter sort of like moving off the map here is the focus,

  272. focus in the 1st 11 chapters of Acts.

  273. Now the focus is going to shift more to the Paul.

  274. We'll see Peter again in chapter 12 here.

  275. But now Barnabas, he is now on the scene.

  276. You remember Barnabas, he's the guy that gave the property to

  277. the early church in the beginning.

  278. He donated property and Anas, Anais and Sapphira was sort of

  279. jealous of what he did and they wanted to be recognized like

  280. Barnabas. So they they lied and they said

  281. they were given whatever to God that they didn't give and ended

  282. up dying and getting dragged out of the church.

  283. The Lord just dealt with her. They're lying and quite sobering

  284. experience in those early days. Barnabas was a, a man of great

  285. comfort and he was an encourager.

  286. And this is just the way he always was.

  287. Matter of fact, whenever Paul, Saul got converted on the on the

  288. road there to Damascus and, and everybody's afraid because Paul

  289. was a persecutor of Saul was a persecutor of Christians before

  290. he was called Saul. Barnabas was able to meet with

  291. Saul and see that his conversion was legitimate, that what

  292. happened to him was a miracle, and that he really got saved.

  293. And then he was able to go up with Barnabas to Jerusalem later

  294. to meet the religious leaders at the time, the Judaizers, and

  295. tell them, hey, don't be afraid of Saul.

  296. He's one of us now. He's our brother.

  297. And so Saul also is aware of the fact that whenever Saul was

  298. called into the ministry that the Lord told him he would take

  299. the gospel to the Gentiles. The Jewish member of the

  300. Sanhedrin, a Pharisee now born again, becomes an apostle

  301. because he's an eyewitness of Christ on that road.

  302. And he goes up after his meeting in Jerusalem and they sent him

  303. to Tarsus for they figure, 8 to 12 years.

  304. So he's up there by himself, not with anybody else, studying,

  305. learning. He didn't go into the ministry

  306. the next day after he got saved. He was used the next day after

  307. he got saved. He did speak in the synagogues,

  308. but there was a lot for him to learn and hear from the Lord.

  309. Eventually he wrote most of the New Testament.

  310. So Barnabas in his mind, they're sending him.

  311. We'll continue to read here. Now verse 19.

  312. Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose

  313. over Stephen, you remember Stephen was martyred few

  314. chapters back. The first martyr, Christian

  315. martyr in the, in the New Testament, these people then

  316. were persecuted and they traveled as far as Phoenicia,

  317. Cyprus and Antioch. So they're, they're spread out

  318. and they're preaching the word to no one but the Jews only.

  319. So initially these people that are in in Jerusalem are, are

  320. being spread out because of the persecution, but their focus

  321. again is just Jewish people. But some of them were men from

  322. Cyprus and Cyrene who when they had come to Antioch spoke to the

  323. Hellenists. You remember the Hellenists were

  324. the Greek cultural Jewish people preaching the Lord Jesus and and

  325. the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed

  326. in and turned to the Lord. Now now recognize in this

  327. section of Scripture here that these were people like you and

  328. me. They weren't, I'm not an

  329. apostle. You aren't either.

  330. You know, we're, we're just like normal believers.

  331. We all have different spiritual gifts, but we're just like

  332. normal everyday people, right? These people were normal

  333. everyday people that were pressed out because of the

  334. persecution and they were out there telling other people about

  335. what Jesus did for them and as a result of their communication in

  336. their marketplace and their neighborhoods where they live,

  337. that kind of stuff, A great number of people believed and

  338. turned to the Lord. None of them said, well, we got

  339. to wait till the apostles come up or wait till Peter comes up

  340. or Barnabas or Saul or James or whatever.

  341. No, like it was so infectious the the work of God's Spirit and

  342. the lives of people like you and me, which it should be that way

  343. still, right? That's why we're studying Acts

  344. to get revived, to learn more about how we can be used by the

  345. Lord in these kind of situations, right?

  346. That they had an impact and all these people believed and turned

  347. to the Lord. Then news of these things came

  348. to the ears of the church in Jerusalem.

  349. So they're hearing what's going on.

  350. The Lord is bringing a harvest. People are getting saved.

  351. So they think about who they sent out already that God has

  352. used. Now Barnabas is going to go as

  353. far as Antioch. They're sending Barnabas up

  354. there as a leader. And when he came and had seen

  355. the grace of God, the grace of God, right?

  356. When you see the grace of God, it attracts you.

  357. I want the grace of God to be poured on in here, that there's

  358. not enough room for people to come, not because of us, but

  359. because of the grace of God. I'll tell you an interesting

  360. story. I was on a Zoom call this week

  361. and I was with a man who is a devout Roman Catholic.

  362. Him and his wife, they happened to live in a garden apartment up

  363. in North Jersey, right by the Calvary Chapel, the large

  364. Calvary Chapel up in North Jersey.

  365. Pastor Lloyd Pulley, who's on our radio pastor's at church,

  366. and they would watch every Sunday these cars come and there

  367. was an overflow so people would park in the garden apartment

  368. parking lot. And he said to his wife, this

  369. guy Nix's name, he says, honey, what's what's going on here?

  370. Is that like a cult up there or what?

  371. These people, they get out of their car and they have an aura

  372. about them. He, the Holy Spirit, was helping

  373. them to see the glory of God on the faces of these families.

  374. And it was attracting him, the grace of God on these people

  375. like us just getting out of their car, walking into church.

  376. He said, you know, we had to go over there sometime.

  377. She says, yeah, why not? Why don't we go over there?

  378. So they went over and the first Sunday there for the first time

  379. in their lives, he told me this after the business Zoom call.

  380. He said, I want to talk to you about something off the record.

  381. I see you're involved. Involved with Calvary Chapel.

  382. Yeah. And I said, yeah.

  383. And so then he begins to open up.

  384. I want to tell you what happened.

  385. He said he went in. And for the first time in their

  386. lives, they heard the simple gospel.

  387. Thanks for joining us on this journey through Acts.

  388. On today's edition of Living Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark

  389. shares that one of the most remarkable things about the book

  390. of Acts is how it shows the disciples transformation.

  391. The followers of Jesus we meet here are very different from the

  392. often confused and fearful disciples in the Gospels.

  393. After Jesus's death and resurrection, and especially

  394. through the power of the Holy Spirit, the apostles experienced

  395. a profound change in their hearts and boldness.

  396. Their faith became unwavering, and they move forward with

  397. courage to spread the gospel despite opposition and hardship.

  398. Acts reminds us that the same Spirit who empowered them is at

  399. work in US today, shaping our hearts and giving us strength to

  400. live boldly for Christ. Living Waters of Grace is a

  401. ministry of Calvary Chapel Westmoreland.
