  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. They remembered the words of the Lord.

  6. They did exactly that. They just forgot about it and

  7. moved on. And it says they were filled

  8. with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  9. So when your heart and mind submits to the issues in our

  10. life, whether we like them or not, and we say, Lord, I'm not

  11. real happy with this right now, but I trust you and what you're

  12. doing in my life. And my heart wants to be soft

  13. towards you and I want to be open and willing to accept what

  14. it is you're doing in my life. But I want to praise you in it.

  15. Have you ever found yourself in a spot where you're completely

  16. stumped on what to do next? Navigating a trial?

  17. Yeah, that's definitely no walk in the park.

  18. It takes up all your thoughts, doesn't it?

  19. So how often do you let go of those anxious thoughts and

  20. simply hand everything over to God?

  21. In today's message, Pastor Clark is here to remind you to put

  22. your trust in God for all things.

  23. Rest assured, everything God brings into your life is meant

  24. for your benefit. Just have faith in Him now.

  25. Here's Pastor Clark in Acts chapter 14 as he begins his

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  26. message called persecution. We are in the book of the Acts

  27. studying about the work of the Holy Spirit in the body of the

  28. church. That work of the Holy Spirit

  29. continues today as we live in our own lives in the church,

  30. serving the Lord. And we have to understand that

  31. part of being a Christian is also dealing with adversity and

  32. trials, right? I mean, that's part of how God

  33. purifies us and helps us to grow in a closer relationship with

  34. him. Sometimes we go through times of

  35. dark valleys and we go through despondency or depression, or we

  36. go through times of hopelessness, but we find that

  37. in those times, that's when we cry out through the Lord the

  38. most, and we need Him the most. And so God uses these things to

  39. purify us and refine us. And when we get through them, we

  40. begin to understand, Wow, if this wouldn't have happened in

  41. my life, I wouldn't know the Lord the way I know Him now.

  42. And so He loves us being couraged no matter what.

  43. You might be caring today, what you might be struggling with,

  44. what you might be going through, God is not abandon you.

  45. He's with you. And His word is a lamp unto our

  46. feet, a light unto our path. So let's pray as we get prepared

  47. for this teaching today. Lord, we know and we understand,

  48. Father, the challenges that we go through.

  49. You teach us, Lord, how to learn about You, but also how to

  50. depend on You and to trust in You in ways that we wouldn't

  51. have learned if we hadn't been put in a position where we

  52. desperately needed You, Lord, and all of us have been in those

  53. places. And so, Lord, we are here today

  54. to receive from you what your Holy Spirit has for your church.

  55. And we pray the same for churches all over the world

  56. today where believers are gathering in the Word of God.

  57. Lord, that you would minister through the servants who stand

  58. behind the pulpit. We're ordinary people.

  59. We're broken ourselves. We are also fallen, Lord, yet

  60. you have redeemed us. And Lord, even though we still

  61. struggle, we're tempted, we still sin.

  62. You choose to perfect the Saints through the work of the

  63. ministry, through the teaching of the Word, You're changing us

  64. all into your image and likeness.

  65. We're all works in process. We're so thankful for Your

  66. mercy, Your patience with each of us.

  67. Lord, none of us have arrived. None of us have it all together,

  68. only you have it together. And that's why we come to learn

  69. from you and about you, because as our eyes are upon you, we

  70. change and we become more like you.

  71. So Lord, we just ask now for your favor on your word and

  72. blessing on your people that Lord today you would give them

  73. what it is they've come for. I can't give it to them, but you

  74. can by your Holy Spirit through the word.

  75. So Lord, our trust is in you and we pray these things in Jesus

  76. name, Amen. So the title of the message

  77. today is persecution. Has anybody ever felt like

  78. they've been persecuted to have gone persecution?

  79. We all have. If we're we're Christians, the

  80. Bible says all that live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer what

  81. persecution? And I think when we first come

  82. to Christ and we're new believers, we skip over that.

  83. We don't. Maybe that's for someone else.

  84. That's not for me. But none of us get through it

  85. without dealing with adversity and persecution.

  86. The Apostle Paul and Barnabas are on their first missionary

  87. journey. This is basically the inception

  88. of the Great Commission, where Jesus said to go into all the

  89. world and preach the gospel to every living creature, baptizing

  90. them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching

  91. them to observe all things whatsoever.

  92. I've commanded you, and lo, I'm with you always, even unto the

  93. end of the age. That's the Great Commission.

  94. So they have been in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria.

  95. Now they're spreading out into the other regions of the world.

  96. And because of what they've done, that gospel has gone

  97. throughout the earth. And we're recipients of the

  98. seeds that were initially planted in these early stages of

  99. the New Testament church. And so it talks about in my

  100. Bible, the heading, and I'm going to finish up verse 13.

  101. Just read it. Blessing and conflict at

  102. Antioch. So persecution comes in a form

  103. of people who hate Jesus, hate the gospel, hate the word of

  104. God, hate holiness, hate righteousness, hate repentance.

  105. They just want to live as pagans, right?

  106. And many of us, all of us, probably at one time, we were

  107. all lost in our sins before Christ saved us.

  108. We lived that way too. We didn't want to hear anything

  109. about this kind of stuff we're talking about today.

  110. Then the Lord saves us. He softens our hearts, and he

  111. gives us a desire to want to go this way, right?

  112. To follow the path of Christ. So we pick up persecution and

  113. adversity because we live for Christ.

  114. We try to represent him and sometimes we pick up persecution

  115. and adversity from employers or even in families.

  116. Sometimes we go through it even in a church.

  117. Lord, we're sometimes God allows things the enemy works and tries

  118. to divide the church and to scatter the sheep and just get

  119. people to stop falling the Lords, you know, because of

  120. relationship issues or whatever, you know.

  121. So when we study the word, we have to understand that we are

  122. all sinners still. Things have happened to us in

  123. all of our lives that we don't think has been fair or we don't

  124. like. And so we get bitter at times.

  125. We get hard. We get in a place of being

  126. unwilling to forgive. We get bitter.

  127. And that's not what the Lord's like.

  128. When he died on that cross, He had his arms out and we all knew

  129. what we were doing. But he says, Father, forgive

  130. them so they know not what they do.

  131. So as we study this today and you think about your own trials,

  132. your own persecution, the things that have happened to you that

  133. you don't think's fair, if anybody has hurt you, if

  134. anybody's offended you, if anybody's injured you in some

  135. way, allow the Lord to give you grace to forgive.

  136. Because we can't be followers of Jesus if we don't forgive.

  137. It tells us in the Lord's Prayer forgive us our trespasses as He

  138. forgives us our trespasses. Then later on in John it says if

  139. we don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will our

  140. heavenly Father forgive us of ours.

  141. That's shocking, isn't it? You can.

  142. So I prayed the prayer. I asked Jesus to come into my

  143. heart. That's all well and good, but if

  144. we're not forgiving people, there's a disconnect, right?

  145. So we want to be a Church of mercy and forgiveness in our own

  146. lives toward one another and toward those in the world.

  147. So it says in verse 42. So when the Jews went out of the

  148. synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be

  149. preached to them the next Sabbath.

  150. So certain people heard the gospel, they were excited, they

  151. believed, and obviously there were people there that wouldn't

  152. believe, just like there may be here today.

  153. So when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and

  154. devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to

  155. them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

  156. And so we're here today by the grace of God, we are faithful to

  157. be in the Word. We show up for no other reason

  158. but that we're all testifying together when we're together,

  159. that we're continuing in the grace of God, no matter what we

  160. might be dealing with. On the next Sabbath, almost the

  161. whole city came together to hear the word of God.

  162. Wouldn't that be awesome, you know, for next Sunday that there

  163. wouldn't be enough room for people to come in here because

  164. the whole city is beginning to hear about the grace of God at

  165. Calvary Chapel. That would be a prayer that we

  166. should all have. All these people were excited

  167. about salvation and what the Lord can do.

  168. But it says that when the Jews saw the multitudes and these

  169. were the people that were still not believing, they were filled

  170. with envy. They had never seen so many

  171. people in the synagogue before. And they weren't coming for the

  172. law. They were coming for the grace

  173. of God that was setting them free from all their sin and

  174. their bondage and contradicting and blaspheming.

  175. They oppose the thing spoken by Paul, so there's always

  176. adversity and push back to the message of God's grace and

  177. forgiveness. They're jealous of the impact

  178. that the Word is making on these people because of the grace of

  179. God. And they're also slandering the

  180. preachers, the teachers, the apostles, anybody that has

  181. anything to do with communicating these things they

  182. are adamantly opposed to. And that's what's happening in

  183. our culture today. The world we live in, in the

  184. arena that we are all experiencing, we know there's a

  185. real push back toward Christianity in our country and

  186. in the rest of the world. And so it says they blaspheme.

  187. They opposed the things spoken by Paul.

  188. Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said it was necessary that

  189. the word of God should be spoken to you first, but since you

  190. reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life.

  191. I love how Paul really puts it in her face, well, if you guys

  192. don't want this and you don't want to have everlasting life,

  193. OK, what am I going to do for you, right.

  194. And he said, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

  195. For so the Lord has commanded us.

  196. I have set you as a light to the Gentiles that you should be for

  197. salvation to the ends of the earth.

  198. So that the gospel initially came to the Jewish people.

  199. Jesus said his own did not receive him.

  200. He came to his own. They didn't receive.

  201. And so the whole goal of God from the beginning of time was

  202. to take the gospel to every people group in the world, every

  203. tribe, tongue and nation. There's no discrimination with

  204. the Lord in regard to the good news of the gospel.

  205. It's for all people and all places, everywhere.

  206. And so they are rejecting this. But the Gentiles and some of

  207. these Jewish people are believing.

  208. So the Lord has commanded us. I've set you as a light to the

  209. Gentiles that you should be for salvation to the ends of the

  210. earth. Now when the Gentiles heard

  211. this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord,

  212. and as many as had been appointed to eternal life

  213. believe. This is a fascinating verse

  214. because God, in his all knowingness, his omniscience,

  215. understands that there's going to be a people that are called

  216. out by Him that will believe even before we're created.

  217. That's a mystery of God's sovereignty, His election.

  218. Why is it we're chosen here today?

  219. Why is it that we've believed? Why is it that we've come to

  220. faith in Christ where we heard the Word and it resonated with

  221. us and we came out of death unto life because of the Holy Spirit

  222. making us capable of believing the gospel?

  223. There's so many people that still don't believe.

  224. Why? In the mind of God, he wants the

  225. gospel to go to everyone. We don't know who's going to

  226. believe who isn't, and sometimes people don't believe until their

  227. deathbed. So you never stop praying, you

  228. never stop preaching, you never stop giving the gospel.

  229. You're always wanting to share the Lord with people.

  230. And so and then it says in the word of the Lord was being

  231. spread throughout all the region.

  232. But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and

  233. the chief men of the city, and they raised up persecution

  234. against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from the region.

  235. But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and came

  236. to Iconium, and the disciples were filled with joy and with

  237. the Holy Spirit. So Paul is dealing with

  238. adversity as as we do. Something happens in your life

  239. as a believer, and you might be tempted to quit.

  240. Pastors are tempted to quit all the time because of some of the

  241. pressures they deal with or whatever, but we're called to

  242. persevere. And if we're really the Lord's,

  243. there's this doctrine called the perseverance of the Saints.

  244. If we're really saved, we don't give up, do we?

  245. We just keep on keeping on because God is in US, the Spirit

  246. of God's in US, and he gives us a capacity to not give up even

  247. when we're thinking about it, you know?

  248. And so this beauty of this wisdom of God is that in spite

  249. of John Mark leaving them in the ministry prior to this, that was

  250. a set back. Now they're going in and they're

  251. excited that people are believing and getting saved, but

  252. now they're going to get stoned. People are going to try to kill

  253. them. They just keep keeping on.

  254. And the wisdom of this, you know, the Lord said to the

  255. disciples when they were out on the road that if you get hassled

  256. or people don't listen to you and they don't receive you, he

  257. said shake the dust off your feet, meaning don't let it

  258. bother you. Don't let it bring you down.

  259. Don't let it discourage you. Just keep your eyes on the Lord

  260. and what He's told you to do, and He'll leave you to some

  261. other people that will eventually want to hear.

  262. And so as they did that, they remembered the words of the

  263. Lord. They did exactly that.

  264. They just forgot about it and moved on.

  265. And it says they were filled with joy and with the Holy

  266. Spirit. So when your heart and mind

  267. submits to the issues in our life, whether we like them or

  268. not, and we say, Lord, I'm not real happy with this right now,

  269. but I trust you and what you're doing in my life.

  270. And my heart wants to be soft towards you.

  271. And I want to be open and willing to accept what it is

  272. you're doing in my life. And I want to praise you in it.

  273. Count it all joy when you fall into diverse trials and

  274. temptations. The Bible says that the trying

  275. of your faith works. Patience.

  276. I want to be and I'm sure you do too.

  277. The kind of person that I'm not complaining or I'm not groaning

  278. and moaning, that I accept God's sovereign hand in my life and

  279. say, God, you have a plan in this and I want to praise you

  280. because in the power of praise there is deliverance.

  281. And you're passing the test when you praise God for what it is

  282. you're going through. If you're moaning and groaning,

  283. the Lord says, OK, we got to go through this for a while now

  284. you're still not getting it, are you?

  285. You're still not praising me in spite of the storm.

  286. And so these guys are in the midst of it, but they are filled

  287. because their hearts are open to God and they're filled with joy

  288. by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now in verse 14, the journey

  289. starts in these other regions. Now it happened in Iconium and

  290. this is the area of Galatia at the time, it's the Roman Empire.

  291. A lot of pagans in these countries are going to no church

  292. yet until the gospel gets there and Paul and Barnabas are used

  293. by the Lord to see people become believers and churches are

  294. established. They went together to the

  295. synagogue. So the beauty of this thing is

  296. they had a place to go to get people to hear when they

  297. couldn't find a synagogue. They preached in the streets.

  298. But because of Paul and Barnabas being Jewish people, they were

  299. accepted in the system of Judaism because they had

  300. knowledge of the Old Testament. So they were given the

  301. opportunity to speak. I'm sure after they spoke, the

  302. Jews were upset. Like we should never let these

  303. guys say anything. It's ruining our ministry,

  304. right? People are leaving and following

  305. them. But that's what happens, right?

  306. So they, they spoke to a great multitude, both of the Jews and

  307. the Greeks believed, but the unbelieving Jews stirred up the

  308. gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brother.

  309. This is the work of the devil. Whenever you're anywhere where

  310. the truth of God is going forth, people can say things about

  311. whoever the teacher is. They can say, well, they're

  312. hypocrites, or they're this or they're that.

  313. If we're honest, we all have areas of hypocrisy in our life,

  314. right? Is anybody perfect here today?

  315. If you tell me guys, you're perfect, I'll just ask your wife

  316. or I'll ask your husband, right? But you know, this is the

  317. patience of God, right? And he chooses to use weak and

  318. foolish things that confound the what God never looks at the

  319. vessel and says, well, boy, I'm going to pick you because like

  320. you're like no one I've ever created.

  321. And boy, people are going to be blown away with your homiletic

  322. skills and your preaching ability.

  323. God's like, forget that. Let me fill you and let me speak

  324. through you because I don't want you getting in the way of what

  325. it is I want to say. But all the time someone will

  326. come to someone and say, you know, with this person, you

  327. know, I saw them, you know, say this or they acted this way or

  328. whatever. And so people seem to have a

  329. tendency to want to judge you instead of judging themselves.

  330. And the enemy wants to pull the church down and destroy it and

  331. destroy the people that minister in the church through slander

  332. and hatred and unbelief and criticism.

  333. That's why it says in Ephesians, let all bitterness and wrath and

  334. clamor and evil speaking be put away from you, and be kind,

  335. tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for

  336. Christ's sake hath forgiven you. So this continual, habitual need

  337. to forgive, right? And when we forgive, we're to

  338. move on and keep going on looking toward the Lord.

  339. That's something we can't do without the grace of God in our

  340. lives. You have bitterness in your

  341. heart. You want to slander people.

  342. You, you want to get even with them.

  343. You want to be vindictive toward them.

  344. You got to like, say, Lord, this is not you.

  345. Help me to forgive. Well, how many times do we

  346. forgive? Jesus says 70 * 7.

  347. That's 490 times for the same offense.

  348. That's the picture of you keep forgiven, right?

  349. So what happens is they're trying to poison the mind of

  350. these people. Therefore, they stayed there a

  351. long time, speaking boldly in the Lord.

  352. Those guys knew what people were saying.

  353. They felt that they experienced it, but they didn't say, you

  354. know, get thin skin and then say, well, this isn't fair.

  355. We're just trying to do what God wants us to do.

  356. We're not going to do this anymore.

  357. It's hurting our feelings or whatever.

  358. No, they just kept being faithful.

  359. It says they spoke boldly in the Lord who was bearing witness to

  360. the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by

  361. their hands. So this Apostolic authority

  362. ability, sometimes God showed up in signs and wonders and they

  363. did miracles. Lots of times there was no

  364. miracles. It wasn't anything.

  365. And Paul in and of himself, it was a special anointing that

  366. came at times and in seasons for God to be glorified in the midst

  367. of a situation where people would get their attention taken

  368. by some miraculous situation. So the multitude of the city in

  369. verse 4 was divided, part sided with the Jews and part with the

  370. apostles. So like in our world today, you

  371. have a group of people who are followers of Christ, and then

  372. you have a group of people who are against Christ, right?

  373. It's always that way, even sometimes, unfortunately, in

  374. churches. And when this issue happened,

  375. this violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews

  376. with their rulers to abuse and stone them.

  377. They became aware of it, and they fled the Lystra and Derby

  378. cities of Iconia into the surrounding region, and they

  379. were reaching the gospel there, so they understood the attempt

  380. to take them out, to kill them, basically to assassinate them.

  381. They were smart enough to know that they needed to get out of

  382. that town and move to next place.

  383. But the stoning never stopped. Paul remembers when Stephen was

  384. stoned, he was part of that group that had Stephen Stone,

  385. the first martyr in the book of the Acts in New Testament

  386. church. So now Paul's going to

  387. experience some of the same things that those who have gone

  388. before him. So now they go to Lystra verse

  389. 8. And in Lystra, a certain man

  390. without strength in his feet was sitting a cripple from his

  391. mother's womb. So this guy didn't have a

  392. temporary paralysis. This didn't happen after he was

  393. born. He was born with the inability

  394. to walk. He had never walked.

  395. This man heard Paul speaking. He heard the gospel.

  396. You heard the message, Paul observing him intently.

  397. And so you have an audience. You're speaking.

  398. I see your eyes, you see mine. Sometimes I get fixated on

  399. someone in the room because I sense there's a heavy burden in

  400. their lives. There's something going on.

  401. I don't know what it is, but the Lord does.

  402. And I just say, Lord, you know, speak to them, whatever it is

  403. you need to say to them. And sometimes I see people who

  404. are eager to want to follow Jesus deeper and I pray and I

  405. say, Lord, help cultivate that in their lives.

  406. Help them to sense that and want to follow you.

  407. And if I can be of any help, show me how myself or the elders

  408. can be of help and the others in the church that are wanting to

  409. serve people. So he's looking intently and he

  410. sees that he had faith to be healed.

  411. He's looking at this man and he says he has faith to be healed.

  412. Now this is interesting because God does all things according to

  413. counsel of his own will. And some of these faith

  414. churches, they'll teach, well, the reason you're not healed is

  415. you don't have enough faith, right?

  416. You hear that? But there's this element too,

  417. that when we come to God, we have to pray believing, and

  418. that's where we struggle. I believe, Lord, help my

  419. unbelief. But God honors belief, simple

  420. belief. And so this man is hungry for

  421. the Lord, but he also has something happening in his

  422. spirit that Paul recognized that this guy can believe God for

  423. anything right now in his life. And that's rare.

  424. That doesn't happen all the time, but he senses that

  425. something can happen here. The Holy Spirit obviously was

  426. speaking to Paul about this. So Paul, think about this.

  427. I mean, sometimes like people came for healing.

  428. They didn't get healed. Other times they got healed.

  429. And I'm sure at times Paul's like, God, I don't know how this

  430. works. Why can't it work all the time,

  431. you know? But it doesn't.

  432. And probably the reason it doesn't is, is that we would

  433. think we had something to do with it, right?

  434. Do you ever pray and really believe and you see God do

  435. something and touch someone and you're like, wow, you know, I'm

  436. going to do this all the time. And then the next time you pray

  437. and it doesn't happen and you're like, why did it happen the one

  438. time and why didn't it happen the other time?

  439. That's the mystery of God and his plan, his sovereign plan.

  440. So he says to this guy, and this would take some real faith on

  441. Paul's part. Stand up straight on your feet.

  442. And he leaped and he walked. Now, what if Paul would have

  443. said, stand up straight on your feet and then nothing happened?

  444. That would be somewhat like embarrassing, I guess.

  445. And they say, well, why did you say that?

  446. I don't know why I said that. I just was hoping or maybe, but

  447. somehow, you know, again, God's sovereignty, there was such an

  448. complete evidence that something miraculous was going to happen

  449. here, that God did something miraculous.

  450. Thanks for joining us on this journey through Acts.

  451. On today's edition of Living Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark

  452. shares that one of the most remarkable things about the book

  453. of Acts is how it shows the disciples transformation.

  454. The followers of Jesus we meet here are very different from the

  455. often confused and fearful disciples in the Gospels.

  456. After Jesus's death and resurrection, and especially

  457. through the power of the Holy Spirit, the apostles experienced

  458. a profound change in their hearts and boldness.

  459. Their faith became unwavering, and they move forward with

  460. courage to spread the gospel despite opposition and hardship.

  461. Acts reminds us that the same Spirit who empowered them is at

  462. work in US today, shaping our hearts and giving us strength to

  463. live boldly for Christ. Living Waters of Grace is a
