  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. We preach forgiveness of sins through the death, burial and

  6. resurrection and shed blood of Jesus Christ.

  7. But how do we live out this forgiveness?

  8. It says in the Beatitudes, blessed are the peacemakers, for

  9. they shall be called children of God, a peacemaker, someone who

  10. can step between two warring parties.

  11. The peacemaker initiates reconciliation when others have

  12. wronged them. The peacemaker is quick to

  13. repent when they have wounded others.

  14. You must have seen this. When 2 folks get into a heated

  15. debate, there's usually someone else who steps in trying to

  16. smooth things over and bring a little peace to the situation.

  17. Today, Pastor Clark has an inspiring message for you about

  18. the importance of being a peacemaker.

  19. Why not be the spark that encourages others to let go and

  20. move on? Arguments rarely lead to

  21. anything positive, but when you embrace forgiveness, you open

  22. the door for God to work through you in incredible ways.

  23. Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts Chapter 15 as he

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  24. continues his message ministry leadership fallout.

  25. It's interesting when Paul and Barnabas started having problems

  26. about John Mark, that they didn't say, well, you know,

  27. first of all, we should pray about this together.

  28. We should get some input from some of the other brothers that

  29. we just are with here in Jerusalem.

  30. How do we deal with this conflict in our relationship?

  31. We've been together all these years.

  32. God's used us. Many people have come to know

  33. Christ, and now we're getting mad and our pride is in the way

  34. and we're not allowing the Spirit of God to control our

  35. hearts. So there was much dispute.

  36. This wasn't a simple issue here, and there was problems between

  37. both of them in their hearts at this time.

  38. So you might say, well, who is wrong in this contention?

  39. Was it Paul or was it Barnabas more than the other person?

  40. Or was it both of them together? This confrontation became so

  41. sharp that they actually stopped on ministry together.

  42. And this happens in just about any kind of church you've

  43. probably ever been in. You see people that used to be

  44. there that served, that loved one another.

  45. They're no longer there. Or you see the doors shut of

  46. churches that used to be very vibrant.

  47. But because of contention and arguments and inability to be

  48. reconciled, the work of God is is thwarted and and destroyed.

  49. And we know who's behind all that.

  50. It's the evil one who wants to scatter the sheep, destroy your

  51. life as a Christian, destroy the integrity of the body of Christ,

  52. and close churches down. This heated disagreement, this

  53. difference of opinion was basically a difference of

  54. opinion. Paul didn't like John Mark for

  55. whatever reason anymore, didn't want to give him a chance.

  56. Barnabas was related to John Mark and he had a heart for him.

  57. He saw the potential in him. What's interesting is in spite

  58. of everything that happened in this section of Scripture,

  59. eventually John Mark was reconciled to Paul.

  60. And Paul said later on in one of his epistles, please send John,

  61. he's needful to me. And so there was that beauty of

  62. reconciliation. Eventually it tells us in

  63. Proverbs 1310, Only by pride cometh contention, but with the

  64. well advised is wisdom. And so we see here that there's

  65. pride in the Apostle Paul's life and there's pride also in

  66. Barnabas life. God tells us in the book of

  67. Proverbs, chapter 6, verse 16 through 19, these six things the

    Proverbs 6:16–19

  68. Lord hates. Yeah, they are an abomination

  69. unto him, a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent

  70. blood, a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that

  71. be swift and running to mischief, a false witness that

  72. speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among the

  73. brethren. So we see this disagreement

  74. between people, in this instance, Paul and Barnabas,

  75. leaders of the church. I was thinking as I was studying

  76. this, what scriptures did they have access to in regard to

  77. dealing with conflict up until this point?

  78. Well, we know that Jesus taught clearly in the Beatitudes how

  79. we're to live out our faith and how we're to live in regard to

  80. conflict that arises in our life.

  81. The Beatitudes were responsible to help us to understand how to

  82. have a blessed and a happy life. It says blessed are the poor in

  83. spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.

  84. Being poor in spirit is to be humble, to acknowledge our own

  85. shortcomings, and to have humility in the opposition of

  86. pride, the sin that comes before the fall.

  87. Humility is always rooted in forgiveness and this desire to

  88. be at peace. That's the first beatitude that

  89. Christ gave. This is how he has been toward

  90. us. Jesus, the lover of my soul.

  91. Jesus, I will never let you go. You've taken me from the miry

  92. clay. You lifted me up.

  93. And the Lord wants us to be this way with one another.

  94. And we all fall so short in actually doing this this

  95. morning. I'm sure there's not one of us

  96. here who has not experienced conflict in our lives, whether

  97. it's in our marriages, with our children, our family, our

  98. neighbors, our Co laborers, in the ministry, at work, it's

  99. everywhere. And unfortunately, I find that

  100. conflict is never really dealt with in a biblical way.

  101. Usually it could be someone in the church that's upset about

  102. something, about someone who said something or did something,

  103. and they decide they're not going to go to the church

  104. anymore because one person maybe didn't say hi to them or didn't

  105. smile at them or wasn't pleasant toward them.

  106. I mean, we're all so self focused unfortunately, and we're

  107. all so easily offended. The Bible tells us that love is

  108. not easily offended, but we unfortunately, outside of having

  109. the love of God working in our life, we get offended over the

  110. most ridiculous things, don't we?

  111. Sometimes people won't talk in a family for years and they can't

  112. even remember at times why they don't talk anymore because it's

  113. such a stupid thing. Well, why didn't you talk to

  114. your dad all these years or your mom or whatever?

  115. Well, to be honest with you, I can't remember.

  116. I just knew we fought about something, we were upset and I

  117. can't even remember what it is anymore.

  118. Isn't that sad? And so the Lord looks at these

  119. things and wonders, you know, how can we call ourselves as

  120. followers and we behave this way?

  121. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  122. Mourning is this morning over my own sins, the sins of the world

  123. and the suffering that other people go through that should

  124. break us and make us sad and make us prayerful.

  125. That we want to see situations change and reconcile first in

  126. our own heart with the Lord and then in our hearts with one

  127. another and then our hearts in this broken world.

  128. If we as believers can't forgive one another in this world, how

  129. in the world can we reach lost pagans and people that are

  130. really out there that are doing everything that would offend us

  131. as human beings? How can we have love in our

  132. hearts to take the gospel, the people that really need Jesus,

  133. if we can't live the gospel with one another as Christians?

  134. There's a movie coming out in February called The Jesus

  135. Revolution, and it's on the history of the Calvary Chapel

  136. movement. Kelsey Grammar, the guy that

  137. played and cheers, you remember him.

  138. He plays a part of Chuck Smith of all people.

  139. And but anyway, this is a phenomenal film about this

  140. little church called Calvary Chapel that was dying because of

  141. religion and self righteousness and all the suits and the ties.

  142. And everybody thought that because of the way they looked

  143. outwardly, they were acceptable God.

  144. Inwardly, hippies started coming to this church because they were

  145. in desperate need of a savior. They were broken people.

  146. Their lives were messed up and ruined because of sin.

  147. Chuck didn't know how to deal with it when they started coming

  148. in. And some of the wealthy people

  149. in the church said, if these kind of people come to our

  150. church, the people that support this church financially will no

  151. longer be in this church. Chuck took a deep breath and

  152. swallowed and said I understand but he didn't know what to do

  153. and finally this one young hippie came to him and looked

  154. him straight in the eye and said.

  155. Pastor Chuck someone has to be willing to love people that are

  156. not easy to love. Someone has to be willing to

  157. give them a chance and invite them in in spite of the way they

  158. look and the way they dress and the things they've done.

  159. Chuck heard this young man started getting choked up,

  160. excuse himself, moved away to go wash his hands at the sink,

  161. thinking about what was being said to him by this hippie who

  162. had just recently become saved. He then made the decision that

  163. he was going to open the doors to whoever wanted to come into

  164. the church, regardless of the outcome.

  165. And he told the congregation that the door swings both ways.

  166. The door swings inwardly for those who are broken.

  167. For those who are easily offended, the door swings the

  168. other way for them to leave. And so some of those people got

  169. up and left and never came back. But what happened because of

  170. this brokenness in this one pastor's heart, which I need in

  171. my own life, as we all need, is to be at the point in our lives

  172. as Christians that we're not letting things get in the way of

  173. what's most important. And that's our relationship to

  174. Jesus and our love for one another.

  175. Jesus said by this people will know that you're my disciples,

  176. not by your understanding of doctrine, which is important, by

  177. the teaching of the Bible, which is also critically important,

  178. but he said by the love you have for one another, by this people

  179. will know you're my disciples. What would Barnabas and Saul

  180. say, Paul say to those who would ask them, Where's Barnabas now,

  181. Paul? What would they have said?

  182. Well, we had an argument and then the Christians would say,

  183. well, you guys are supposed to be leading us on how to be

  184. Christians and how to act as Christians, and you guys can't

  185. get along together anymore. That's a that's a bad situation,

  186. isn't it? It's not acceptable.

  187. The Bible doesn't go into great detail on this, but later on it

  188. goes into great detail and how Paul taught about dealing with

  189. conflict because I'm sure he never forgot about this

  190. situation that occurred in his life.

  191. It was a a mark in his ministry, a bad mark in his ministry.

  192. It says blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

  193. The meek are the humble people, obedient and submissive to the

  194. will of God. Jesus was meek and humble of

  195. heart, it tells us in Matthew 1129.

  196. He's learned of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart, and you

  197. will find rest into your soul. The only way that we can become

  198. like Christ is to become humble and to admit our mistakes and

  199. our wrongdoings and ask for forgiveness to those we have

  200. perhaps hurt and offended. Blessed are the merciful, for

  201. they shall receive mercy. And boy do we need mercy.

  202. Lord have mercy on us, the public and said, Lord have mercy

  203. upon me, this Sinner. He wasn't judging the

  204. self-righteous person that didn't think he had any

  205. problems. He was looking at his own need

  206. of mercy. It tells us in the book of

  207. Leviticus, you shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge

  208. against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbors

  209. yourself. I am the Lord.

  210. That's straight from the Scriptures that we're to love

  211. our neighbors. We love ourselves.

  212. Ephesians 431 and 32 says, And let all bitterness and wrath and

  213. clamor and evil speaking be put away from you.

  214. Anybody ever have any problem with any of those things?

  215. Be kind, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as

  216. God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

  217. I mean, who am I to hold a grudge or be bitter or

  218. unforgiving against anybody for what the Lord has done for me

  219. and what He's done for you? This is the heart of the church,

  220. Forgiveness. We preach forgiveness of sins

  221. through the death, burial and resurrection and shed blood of

  222. Jesus Christ. But how do we live out this

  223. forgiveness? It says in the Beatitudes,

  224. blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of

  225. God, a peacemaker, someone who can step between two warring

  226. parties. The peacemaker initiates

  227. reconciliation when others have wronged them.

  228. The peacemaker is quick to repent when they have wounded

  229. others. So we're all to be peacemakers,

  230. aren't we? Christ is the ultimate

  231. peacemaker. He stands between US and God the

  232. Father. And through what he's done on

  233. the cross for us, he made it possible for us to not be at war

  234. with God anymore because of our sin in Jesus own words in John

  235. 1335. By this all people will know

  236. that you are my disciples if you have loved one for another.

  237. I struggle at times when people come to our church for the first

  238. time. I find out like, hey, nice to

  239. see you. Where you from where you've

  240. been? I always love it when they say,

  241. well, we moved and we used to go to a really good church in some

  242. other state and we're here now and we want to come here because

  243. the Bible's taught. I love that.

  244. But if they're at the door and says, well, let me tell you, we

  245. were at such and such a church and the pastor did this or I

  246. don't want to hear any of that because I'm thinking it won't be

  247. too long before they're leaving here saying that about me,

  248. right? I mean, none of us are perfect,

  249. right? And there's always going to be

  250. something, no matter what church you go to, where you find that

  251. there's going to be some kind of issue you got to either deal

  252. with or, you know, not deal with, I guess.

  253. And so when does the migration of Christians begin to end?

  254. Probably not until Christ comes and sets up his Kingdom on earth

  255. and he rules and he's the pastor and we're sitting at his feet.

  256. But when would end this migration from one church to the

  257. next church to the next church to the next church?

  258. How many churches do we have to move to before we realize that

  259. the problem isn't really the church?

  260. The problem is my own heart, usually, and how I deal with

  261. conflict or don't deal with conflict, and then trying to

  262. work out my own salvation with fear and trembling along with

  263. everyone else. To learn to give people grace or

  264. give them space to make mistakes and to not right away want to

  265. squash them or slander them or put them down, but to figure out

  266. ways to help people and to build them up.

  267. The works of the flesh in Galatians 519.

  268. And Paul wrote this himself in the book of Galatians.

  269. This describes the fallenness of our sinful nature, Hatred,

  270. contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish

  271. ambitions, dissensions. And this is disagreements that

  272. lead to discord and distrust among one another.

  273. So here's Paul exhorting the church in Galatia of the

  274. believers, not walking in the flesh, which we do at times.

  275. He had to be reminded of the contention he had with Barnabas,

  276. right? He lived this himself.

  277. He failed. He made a mistake as well.

  278. Versus this beauty of the fruit of the Spirit being filled with

  279. the Holy Spirit where there's peace, long-suffering, that

  280. means patience, hanging in there, kindness, gentleness and

  281. self-control. So as God's servants, we all

  282. fail. We struggle with pride and

  283. unforgiveness and fractured relationships and homework,

  284. family, neighbors, church. How does Jesus treat us when we

  285. fail in these relationships? I think of one of the greatest

  286. examples of a failed relationship and ministry is

  287. Simon Peter, who became the great apostle Peter whenever he

  288. was a rookie, being trained by the Lord in dealing with people

  289. and ministry and the gospel. And so Peter thought he had it

  290. all together. He thought he would never do

  291. anything that would offend his Lord or let him down.

  292. And the Lord speaks to Peter shortly before he's eventually

  293. going to deny him three times. And the Lord says in Luke 22,

    Luke 22:31

  294. verse 31, Simon, Simon, Satan has asked for you that he may

  295. sift you as wheat. That means to shake someone

  296. apart and break a person down. That's what the enemy wants to

  297. do to you. He wants to shake you so hard

  298. and break you down so much that you don't want to have anything

  299. to do with Christians, church, the Bible, anything.

  300. You're done. And I've been close to being

  301. there at times. Anybody else ever been close to

  302. being there? Probably every one of us, if

  303. we're honest. But where do we go?

  304. Where do we go? We go to the Lord.

  305. This picture of the sifting is they use these big large

  306. strainers to shift sift the wheat and the grain as it was

  307. shaken violently. The dirt and other impurities

  308. that clung to the grain during the threshing process would

  309. separate from the good usable grain.

  310. It's good. And the Lord, in his wisdom,

  311. Satan is not someone who does something independent of God's

  312. authority is. It's good to know that.

  313. So the Lord knows and allows the enemy to do what he needs to do

  314. in order to bring us to our senses.

  315. The enemy's goal is to destroy us and to cause us not to want

  316. to follow the Lord. But when God's involved in this

  317. process, we are broken and we're more prepared to do what it is

  318. that God's called us to do. So Satan wants to crush us and

  319. wreck our faith. The good news is that Jesus

  320. speaks in Luke 22, verse 32, the next verse he says, but I've

    Luke 22:32

  321. prayed for you that your face should not fail.

  322. And when you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren.

  323. Isn't that beautiful? Everybody else at that time, if

  324. you and I were hanging out with Peter, I'm not going to listen

  325. to this guy. I'm not going to sit under his

  326. leadership. I reject his authority.

  327. You know what this guy did? He denied Jesus.

  328. That's like one thing everybody remembers with Peter.

  329. He denied Jesus. Well, which or who here has not

  330. denied the Lord one time and our witness by the way, we live DC

  331. Talk had a great song one time that talked about the reason

  332. people don't want to have anything to do with Christianity

  333. is because they say one thing, but they live something out

  334. that's completely different than what Jesus taught.

  335. So Jesus says I prayed for you that your face should not fail.

  336. And when you've returned to me, strengthen your brethren.

  337. So there's this picture all the time of the opportunity to

  338. repent, to get things right, not to see our ministries destroyed,

  339. but to see them reconciled and to be renewed and to be

  340. refreshed and to be more powerful and dynamic than they

  341. ever could have been without our feelings.

  342. Right. When we fail and we falter,

  343. that's when we're humbled. And when we're humbled, that's

  344. when God can begin to work for. God says he resists the proud,

  345. but he gives grace to the humble.

  346. Paul and Barnabas needed grace in their problem and their

  347. conflict. We all need grace and prayer and

  348. the power of the Holy Spirit to be reconciled first to God and

  349. then one to another, to be at peace again, to make amends, to

  350. be forgiving. And this is so important because

  351. God allows these things to be put in the Bible that we might

  352. stop and think and reflect and say, well, how does this

  353. teaching today impact my life personally?

  354. What is it that God wants to show me in regard to my need of

  355. reconciliation with others? And even you today, you might

  356. have been in this church a long time and you might be offended

  357. of something that we as pastors or elders have done that we

  358. don't even know about. If you could come to us and talk

  359. to us and help us to be better pastors, that would be the best

  360. thing to do. Don't give up on us.

  361. Give us a chance like Jesus gave Peter a chance.

  362. When you've returned, strengthen the brethren and whatever church

  363. you're affiliated with, whatever church you're committed to,

  364. whatever pastors and elders you sit under, I pray that you would

  365. pray for these men. They're just men like you.

  366. They're weak, they're not perfect.

  367. They're learning, they're growing in the grace and the

  368. knowledge of the Lord. They need your support, they

  369. need your prayer, they don't need your slander, and they

  370. certainly don't need you leaving the church over something that

  371. doesn't make sense. 3 reasons to leave a church RC Sproul said

  372. Financial propriety, sexual immorality and heresy.

  373. Most of the time when I talk to people that have gone from one

  374. church to the next has nothing to do with any of those things.

  375. It has something to do with something that's stupid.

  376. It doesn't make sense. We're so glad you joined us

  377. today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  378. Pastor Clark is teaching through the Book of Acts, which is the

  379. only book that chronicles the history of the early church

  380. immediately after Jesus's ascension.

  381. It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move

  382. outwards, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of

  383. the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small

  384. group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit

  385. empowered movement that transformed the known world.

  386. Acts is not just a history lesson.

  387. It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are

  388. surrendered, obedient and filled with the Holy Spirit.

  389. Their perseverance still inspires us today.

  390. May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in

  391. our own time. We hope today's message

  392. encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
