  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. In your life and mine, the things that we've done or

  6. situations where we shared our faith that it's just been a

  7. complete bust is never in vain because the Lord promises His

  8. Word won't return void if people laugh at you or scoff at you or

  9. reject you or ridicule you because of what it is you

  10. believe and what you're committed to in your life.

  11. We should just trust God in that.

  12. Even though it didn't work out, we wish it would work out

  13. better, right? But sometimes it doesn't, and

  14. that's the mystery of life. If you ever woken up and thought

  15. to yourself, today is going to be a great day, and then

  16. everything went wrong, what a disappointment.

  17. When you start your day feeling like you're on top of the world

  18. and then experience Murphy's Law, whatever can go wrong will

  19. go wrong. Pastor Clark relates to you in

  20. his message today that even when sharing Jesus with others seems

  21. to go wrong, God is still pleased.

  22. You may not start a revival, but when you're faithful to plant

  23. that seed of faith, God will use it.

  24. Now. Here's Pastor Clark in Acts

    Acts 23 chapter mention

  25. Chapter 23 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  26. Paul says to him, God will strike you, you whitewashed wall

  27. for you sit to judge me according to the law and do not

  28. command me to be struck contrary to the law.

  29. So that wasn't a good way to start out when friends and

  30. influence people in a conversation before the

  31. authorities, right? He's antagonizing this high

  32. priest and everything he said is obviously true.

  33. But Paul responded out of an emotion that made him angry.

  34. Now, Jesus, whenever he was hit on the mouth, he didn't respond

  35. this way. Matter of fact, Jesus didn't

  36. open his mouth most of the time whenever he was being harassed,

  37. something we can learn from. But Paul not being God,

  38. obviously, and neither are we. When we get in a situation we

  39. don't like and we think it's unfair, we're going to fight to

  40. the end to prove that we're innocent.

  41. And Paul wasn't going to take any guff from these people or

  42. from this high priest. And so he basically says

  43. something to him that he's a hypocrite.

  44. Now, when I was in Israel and I saw the tombs and I was on the

  45. Mount of Olives and looking down, I remember Jesus talking

  46. about the Pharisees being like whitewashed sefolickers.

  47. In other words, the tombs, they look really clean and beautiful

  48. on the outside, but inside they were full of dead man's bones

  49. and corruption. And I'll never forget that.

  50. When I looked down and saw that, it just, you know, resonated and

  51. reminded me of that because they look beautiful, but inside they

  52. were just full of nothing but broken lives and dust and souls

  53. that will unfortunately be on their way to a Christ less

  54. eternity in hell because they never believed that Jesus was a

  55. Christ. But what's happening here is

  56. that Paul is tying him into this dead religion and this false

  57. leadership he had that he's contrary and he's judging

  58. unrighteously now. This guy eventually was caught

  59. up couple years later before Rome was sacked and the Jewish

  60. people had to scatter. But the Jewish people did find

  61. this guy and eventually assassinate him.

  62. So eventually he was judged for his crime of godless leadership

  63. in government. And it says in verse 4, and

  64. those who stood by said, do you revile God's high priest?

  65. So first of all, this was an impromptu meeting.

  66. And so there wasn't any kind of regalia and robes and all that

  67. kind of stuff. And him sitting on a throne like

  68. some big shot, he came in, sat there talking and listening and

  69. Paul wasn't even aware that the high priest was there.

  70. And this is interesting. In verse 5, Paul says, I did not

  71. know, brethren, that he was the high priest.

  72. For it is written, you should not speak evil of a ruler of

  73. your people. So regardless of what Paul

  74. thought about this man's leadership and his call and his

  75. ability to lead the people at this time, then like him,

  76. hypocrite, scoundrel, Pagan, all the different names you could

  77. put on him, he knew the scripture said you're not to

  78. speak evil of a ruler of your people.

  79. Now, I wonder how many pleasant things you or I have thought or

  80. said about Joe Biden lately. He's making a lot of crazy

  81. moves, isn't he? Yet he's the president of our

  82. country. He was elected.

  83. Whether you think he was elected fairly or unfairly, it's not the

  84. point. The point is God has appointed

  85. him to be the president right now, and I don't like it any

  86. more than anybody else, but he's our president, so I'm convicted.

  87. Like, do I pray for him? I'm commanded to pray for those

  88. who are in authority that the Lord would work in his heart,

  89. that he would cause him to come to some kind of reasoning in his

  90. mind to realize that the legislation that he's making is

  91. causing us not to be 1 nation under God anymore, but one

  92. nation under humanism and this immorality and this disgusting

  93. agendas. Every time we turn around some

  94. kind of new things coming down. So we're not.

  95. We have to be real careful, all of us.

  96. And I'm telling you about myself, doesn't matter who's in

  97. office or who you like, who you don't like, you need to pray for

  98. those who are in office. That's our responsibility as

  99. Christians and we need to do that.

  100. And maybe if we began to do that, maybe there would be some

  101. changes in our nation because that man needs God's mercy, just

  102. like you and I do. And there was times in our lives

  103. that we probably were worse than the way Joe Biden acts or lives

  104. perhaps. But this is a very clear

  105. statement that Paul said you shall not speak evil of the

  106. ruler of your people. In verse 6 it says, but when

  107. Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and other

  108. Pharisees, he cried out in the council of men and brethren, I'm

  109. a Pharisee. He was proud to say that he was

  110. a Pharisee. He was a son of a Pharisee.

  111. Concerning the hope of the resurrection and dead, I'm being

  112. judged. So all Paul's wanting people to

  113. know is that Christ rose again from the dead.

  114. Amen. But Paul's whole focus was to

  115. let these people know the good news that there's life after

  116. death, there's forgiveness of our sins, and that we can

  117. believe on Christ as our Messiah and have the promise of

  118. everlasting life and never die. That's good news, right?

  119. And they're wanting to silence Him.

  120. Now what's interesting here is that when He said that the

  121. dissension began to occur in verse 7.

  122. And when He said this, the dissension arose between the

  123. Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

  124. Now He wasn't intentionally trying to cause some kind of

  125. uproar, but He was just stating a case relating to what His past

  126. was and the need for them to understand that there is a

  127. resurrection. Well, the Pharisees were wow,

  128. Amen. That's what we believe that too.

  129. But the Sadducees in verse 8 say there is no resurrection and no

  130. Angel or spirit, but the Pharisees confess or believe

  131. both. Then there arose a lot outcry

  132. and the scribes in the Pharisees party arose in protest and

  133. saying we find no evil in this man.

  134. So now the Pharisees are supporting Paul.

  135. There's really no crime he's committed.

  136. There's no reason for him to be in chains or to be smacked

  137. around or to be persecuted right now.

  138. Absolutely none. And they're admitting there is

  139. no evil in him, and so let's let it go.

  140. If an Angel or spirit had spoken to him and gave him this other

  141. revelation, they're saying let us not fight against God.

  142. So now when there arose of great dissension, the commander,

  143. fearing lest Paul might be pulled to pieces by them,

  144. commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from

  145. among them and bring him into the barracks.

  146. So this was getting dangerous. I mean, there was a big outroar

  147. here. There was a potential here of

  148. murder upon Paul, and so they had to get him out of there.

  149. It was this mass confusion. So here's Paul.

  150. Now think about this. It's like your greatest

  151. opportunity to share your faith with your family, maybe on a

  152. holiday or someone you work with and and you think the timing's

  153. perfect and it's all set up and you're just praying it's going

  154. to go well. And you got all the verses lined

  155. up and you got your testimony ready, and you begin to tell the

  156. people about what Jesus has done for you, and it falls on deaf

  157. ears. They begin to yell at you or

  158. complain, or they don't want to hear it.

  159. They bring up all your flaws and faults that you've had in your

  160. life and saying, who are you to say that you're a Christian when

  161. you did this or you acted this way or you said that and you

  162. know what it's like. And you would be deflated,

  163. right? You would be discouraged.

  164. You had the chance to tell them and it seemed like it didn't

  165. work out. Like Lord, why?

  166. I really practice, I was really prepared and my intention and my

  167. desire was to really be a blessing.

  168. And this is a mess. I've made a complete mess out of

  169. all this. Now if Paul would have listened

  170. to the people in regards to not going up to Jerusalem right now,

  171. all this wouldn't have gone down this way.

  172. But keep in mind that the Lord says all things work together

  173. for good to those who love Him and are called according to His

  174. purpose. So in your life and mine, the

  175. things that we've done or situations where we shared our

  176. faith that it's just been a complete bust is never in vain

  177. because the Lord promises His word won't return void if people

  178. laugh at you or scoff at you or reject you or ridicule you

  179. because of what it is you believe and what you're

  180. committed to in your life. We should just trust God in

  181. that. Even though it didn't work out,

  182. we wish it would work out better, right?

  183. But sometimes it doesn't. And that's the mystery of life.

  184. God causes all things to work out according to the counsel of

  185. His own will, not my will or your will.

  186. His will be done right. So we're to be obedient to do

  187. what He tells us to do, regardless of the potential

  188. consequences, especially in regard to sharing our faith or

  189. standing up for our faith. But Paul is, I'm sure,

  190. discouraged. Now he's in this prison.

  191. It's not a pleasant place to be. And this isn't verse 11.

  192. But the following night, the Lord stood by him and said, now

  193. the Lord is faithful to be with us and our failings.

  194. He's not like people who will reject us and tell us we're

  195. worthless or we're disqualified. Or, you know, the Lord is the

  196. God of the second chance, the third chance, the fifth chance,

  197. the hundred chance. He never gives up on us.

  198. He always comes to us to assure us and to encourage us and to

  199. love on us. He doesn't come to revile us or

  200. to condemn us or to to judge us as his kids.

  201. He's a loving father and he knows how to minister to us.

  202. He knew Paul felt like a failure.

  203. He knew Paul had the heads up not to go.

  204. And Jesus didn't say, well, the reason this has happened is

  205. because you didn't listen, right?

  206. Like I would as a parent, I'd say to my kids, if you wouldn't

  207. have done that, like I told you, you shouldn't, this wouldn't

  208. have happened. That's not the best way to

  209. minister to your kids. You should try to figure out a

  210. different way to get to them, right?

  211. But we're all the same way. That's how we all act.

  212. And it's just, you know, self righteousness or being judges or

  213. whatever. But this is the Lord here.

  214. He says to him, be of good cheer.

  215. Paul's down in the dumps, be of good cheer.

  216. You got to be kidding me. This is how God loves us.

  217. And he says Paul, for as you have testified for me in

  218. Jerusalem and he didn't give an attitude of how well it went or

  219. how bad it went. He just said you testified for

  220. me in Jerusalem. That meant something.

  221. So you must also bear witness at Rome, and Paul's greatest desire

  222. was to eventually get the room before he died to share.

  223. Paul loved being in the big cities and seeing the

  224. architecture and reading about the artwork and meeting all the

  225. interesting people. He loved to sightsee and he was

  226. a Taurus, but he was also an apostle and whenever he went

  227. into a city he wanted to become all things to all men that he

  228. might win some. He tried to have start up

  229. conversations to be able to find a place of relating with people

  230. on their term as opposed to speaking down to him.

  231. He was just that way and something we can learn by his

  232. methodology and evangelism. He didn't pound people on the

  233. head like many of us have done at times.

  234. And so he's encouraging Paul and I pray today, wherever you're at

  235. and spiritual and walking and life and circumstances and

  236. things that don't seem to be working out right the way you'd

  237. like him to, but the Lord's coming alongside of you telling

  238. you to be a good sheer, Don't be discouraged.

  239. Don't be dismayed for your Lord, your God is with you wherever

  240. you go. He promises He'll never leave us

  241. or forsake us. People will leave you, People

  242. will forsake you. But Jesus will never leave you,

  243. will He? He promises He won't.

  244. And when you're alone in your house or in your bed crying or

  245. going through some tough time or some situation because of life

  246. that happened that you weren't anticipating and people, maybe

  247. you're telling you you brought things upon yourself and you

  248. deserve or whatever, God won't minister to you that way.

  249. When you're his kid, he'll come and he'll tenderly restore you

  250. and build you up and strengthen you so you have the courage to

  251. go on. Be of good cheer means be of

  252. good courage. Don't give up.

  253. And so, and when it was day, some of the Jews in verse 12

  254. banded together and bound themselves under an oath,

  255. saying, and this is the insurrection group here, the

  256. people that really hate Paul, that they would neither eat nor

  257. drink until they had killed Paul.

  258. So they're fasting, preparing to do something they think is going

  259. to be a righteous act. Get rid of Paul.

  260. Now, there were more than 40 who had formed this conspiracy, not

  261. a few people. It's a big group.

  262. They came to the chief priests and elders and said, and what's

  263. interesting here, they're not going to the Pharisees.

  264. The chief priests and elders are representing the Sadducees, and

  265. these people that want to kill him are the group of the

  266. Sadducees. We've bound ourselves under a

  267. great oath that we will eat nothing until we have killed

  268. Paul. Now you therefore, together with

  269. the council, suggest to the commander that he'd be brought

  270. down to you tomorrow as though you were going to make further

  271. inquires concerning him. But we are ready to kill him

  272. before he comes near. So this is a setup against the

  273. Apostle Paul. Paul's in a prison, no one to

  274. help him except the one who said of good cheer.

  275. He controls everything. He controls all the

  276. circumstances of all people and all places at this time in this

  277. next verse, only God could cause this to happen.

  278. So when Paul's sister son heard of their ambush, then we never

  279. heard of Paul's sister before, let alone his family.

  280. His nephew's there in this area. He happens to be walking by.

  281. Maybe he's out playing with his buddies.

  282. He goes down one of those alleys and he hears these guys talking

  283. about what it is they're going to do to Uncle Paul.

  284. So he goes and he went and he enters the barracks and told

  285. Paul what he had heard. He tells Paul everything that's

  286. going to go down. And then Paul called 1 of the

  287. centurions to him and said, take this young man to the commander

  288. for he has something to tell him.

  289. So he took him and brought him to the commander and said, Paul,

  290. the prisoner called me to him and asked me to bring this young

  291. man to you. He has something to say to you.

  292. Now this is interesting. Most commanders wouldn't have

  293. any time for some young kid. Hey, get away from me kid, you

  294. bother me. You know I don't want to.

  295. But this commander was compelled by God, the sovereign God, to

  296. listen to what this kid had to say.

  297. And he asked him privately, what is it that you have to tell me?

  298. And he said, the Jews have agreed to ask that you bring

  299. Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were

  300. going to inquire more fully about him.

  301. But do not yield to them, for more than 40 of them lie and

  302. wait for him, men who have bound themselves by an oath that they

  303. would neither eat nor drink until they have killed him.

  304. And now they are ready waiting for the promise from you.

  305. So he gives them the whole skinny of what's going down

  306. here. And the commander in verse 22,

  307. let the young man depart and commanded him, tell no one that

  308. you've revealed these things to me.

  309. And he called in verse 23 for two centurion saying, prepare

  310. 200 soldiers, 70 horsemen, and 200 spear men to go to Caesarea

  311. at the third hour of the night and provide Mons to set Paul on

  312. and bring him safely to Phoenix. The governor and he wrote a

  313. letter in the following manner. So this is a setup.

  314. This is half the Garrison army that the high priest was working

  315. with. And this other guy here now is

  316. involved with getting Paul safely out of the city so he

  317. won't be assassinated. And this is a big entourage here

  318. of a lot of people. They were going to walk about 47

  319. miles to the first city, stay overnight.

  320. The next morning they were going to be on horseback and get Paul

  321. safely into Caesarea, a Roman province, and he would now be

  322. under the jurisdiction of the Roman government.

  323. And so Claudius Lyceus writes the letter that they're going to

  324. give to Felix whenever Paul's delivered their greetings.

  325. This man was seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by

  326. them coming with the troops. I rescued him, having learned

  327. that he was a Roman. Now, of course, he was involved

  328. with wanting Paul to be beaten as well until he found out he

  329. was a Roman citizen. But he learned a lot about the

  330. issue that Paul wasn't really guilty of any crime.

  331. And so in verse 28, and when I wanted to know the reason,

  332. reason they accuse him, I brought him before the council.

  333. I found out that he was accused concerning questions of their

  334. law, but had nothing charged against him deserving of death

  335. or change. And when it was told me the Jews

  336. lay in wait for the man, I sent him immediately to you and also

  337. commanded his accusers to state before you the charges against

  338. him. So what a beautiful letter.

  339. I mean, Paul's guiltless. There's no reason for him to be

  340. treated like this, and he's passing them off to the next

  341. government leader in the province of Rome.

  342. Farewell then the soldiers in verse 31, as they were

  343. commanded, they took Paul and brought him by night at TI

  344. Pytis. That was the place 47 miles

  345. away. And the next day they let the

  346. horsemen to go with him and return to the barracks.

  347. And when they came to Caesarea and had delivered the letter to

  348. the governor, they also presented Paul to him.

  349. And when the governor had read it, he asked what province he

  350. was from. And when he understood that he

  351. was from Cilicia, he said that's a region of Syria.

  352. Paul came out of Tarsus and the all these regions are all part

  353. of this Roman area. He says I will hear you when

  354. your accusers have also come. And he commanded him to be kept

  355. in Herod's Praetorian. So what's beautiful here is that

  356. he is in. He's got it made.

  357. Now. This isn't like any kind of

  358. jail. He's in the palace of the

  359. leader. This is really nice place to be.

  360. Paul probably got there. I can't.

  361. The Lord really is with me, isn't he?

  362. It's my best life now, right? I got prosperity now.

  363. This is good. It goes from doom and gloom.

  364. To joy and excitement and that's how the Lord is many times we

  365. get in situations that seems all Hell's broken loose, we're in

  366. doom and gloom. We think there's no hope, right?

  367. We get there sometimes and then the Lord reminds us and in his

  368. time he changes the circumstances of our lives and

  369. they become completely different, don't they?

  370. And we can all give testimony of how good God's been to us, all

  371. of us in times of challenge of life.

  372. And I think the take away from this, at least for me, you know,

  373. sometimes you read a chapter and you say, like, how is this going

  374. to connect with anybody here? That's history, It's the Bible.

  375. It's true, we need to hear it. But like, where are you guys

  376. going to find some place to dig your heels in and say, hey, this

  377. is helping me. I can stand on this and be

  378. reminded of what I learned today.

  379. And it's going to help me realize that the Lord's with me

  380. and he's not going to forsake me or abandoned me.

  381. And so that's one thing I pray that you take away today, no

  382. matter what you're going through right now or what the challenges

  383. are, how difficult life might be.

  384. At times it is. Sometimes it's wonderful and

  385. everything's going great. Other times it isn't.

  386. But when you go to those times, it isn't wonderful and it's

  387. hard. Remember the promise of the

  388. Lord. He'll never leave you or forsake

  389. you. And he says be of good cheer,

  390. have courage. He said that to Joshua, Be

  391. strong, be not dismayed, neither be thou afraid, for the Lord thy

  392. God is with you wherever you go. Have not I commanded you, Be

  393. strong and of a good courage? Be not afraid, neither be thou

  394. dismayed, for the Lord thy God is with you wherever you go.

  395. And he says that to you and I every day.

  396. You're getting up for work, getting up to raise a kid,

  397. you're getting up to go to the doctor, you're getting up to pay

  398. the bills or whatever it is you got to do.

  399. You're in a maybe a hard marriage, maybe your kids are

  400. going crazy. Whatever he's saying, I'm with

  401. you. I'll help you, depend on me,

  402. trust in me, rely upon me. And he's faithful.

  403. If he wasn't faithful, none of us would be here today, but

  404. we're here because we know his promises are true.

  405. He's not a liar and he'll be with you to the very end.

  406. One be with you to the very end. And whenever you have a decision

  407. to make, and sometimes you make the wrong decision, don't beat

  408. yourself up because of the decision you've made.

  409. Learn from waiting on the Lord. Wait on the Lord for the

  410. decisions that you need to make in your life.

  411. Let's praise the Lord, Father. God, we thank you for the joy,

  412. Lord, your presence, your peace, Father, all the good things,

  413. God, that you give to us every day.

  414. And Lord, we're so thankful for your frankness and your reality

  415. and the simplicity of the Bible and how you teach us because we

  416. can relate to it as people, Lord, human beings failed,

  417. flawed people that you're perfecting and changing and

  418. making more like Jesus a little bit every day.

  419. And Lord, we thank you for that. We thank you for the Apostle

  420. Paul and his willingness, Lord, to serve you the way he did.

  421. And he never looked backwards. He just kept going forward.

  422. He kept depending on you until his eventual martyrdom, Lord,

  423. when you did take him home to be with you.

  424. We look forward to meeting him one day as we obviously looking

  425. forward to meeting you. But all these people that served

  426. you, boy, we could talk to them for hundreds of years about what

  427. they experienced, what they went through, what it must have been

  428. like, and share our stories as well, Lord, because they're just

  429. as powerful. The testimonies.

  430. Have your faith on us, love. Thank you for listening to this

  431. edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  432. Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this

  433. series. Acts is a powerful and unique

  434. part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of

  435. the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the

  436. earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of

  437. Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the

  438. Gentile world. What started with Peter leading

  439. a small group in the Upper Room became a global movement with

  440. Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues, and

  441. marketplaces across the Roman Empire.

  442. Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that

  443. the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.

  444. May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our

  445. world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to

  446. you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
