  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. There is not one situation that you can run into in this life

  6. where you can't see it covered in this word.

  7. Nothing. But if you do read any books

  8. other than this, make sure that those books line up totally with

  9. this. Not well, some of it does, but

  10. some of the questions, some of it just cause you to think

  11. outside the box. No, we don't need to think

  12. outside the box. We need to think inside the

  13. word, not outside the box. What challenge are you facing

  14. that God's Word hasn't already covered?

  15. In today's message, Pastor Lewis declares that no situation

  16. you'll ever face is left out of this book.

  17. Every trial, question, and need is spoken to here.

  18. If you read anything else, make sure it lines up completely with

  19. Scripture. Books that partly agree or push

  20. you to think outside the box can pull you away from the truth.

  21. His Word is enough for every moment of life.

  22. How do you keep God's Word as your final authority in every

  23. situation? Now here's Pastor Lewis in First

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  24. Timothy Chapter 4 with today's edition of Living Waters of

  25. Grace. Please turn in your Bibles to

  26. First Timothy chapter 4. Can you imagine when we are with

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  27. the Lord and we are with Him for eternity, how it's going to be 1

  28. long worship time with the Lord? It's going to be an endless

  29. Hallelujah to the King, and we can have that here now, being in

  30. the family of God and being in Christ Jesus.

  31. Our worship time should be a endless Hallelujah to the King

  32. even now. Amen.

  33. OK, let's pray and then we're going to go into the word of

  34. God, Amen. Father God in Jesus name.

  35. Lord, we do thank you. We thank you, Father, because

  36. once again, as we have, and we thank you that you have given us

  37. your word, not my word or anyone else's word or you've given us

  38. your word that we have the truth in front of us, Lord, that we

  39. can read it every day. But we thank you, Lord, that we

  40. have fellowship with you, Lord, when we spend time in your word.

  41. And now, Father, I ask you, Lord, for your power, your

  42. anointing. I ask you, God, that you would

  43. just be with us today. Your word says we're two or

  44. three are gathered in your name that you would be in the midst

  45. of us Lord, there's a lot more than two or three here today,

  46. Father, we pray that you would just be in the midst of us today

  47. that your love would just be over pouring.

  48. We pray Father that your power Lord would just drench us did

  49. anointing and that it would not only bring the truth of your

  50. word and reveal the truth of your word Lord, but that it

  51. would be a cause us our hearts to be receptacles Lord to be

  52. able to receive your word and that it would grow in US Lord

  53. and cause us to grow and to look more like your son Jesus Christ.

  54. Father, help me. I need Father for you to speak

  55. the words Lord for you just use me as an instrument of Labor for

  56. your will and for your work in Jesus name we pray Amen.

  57. So this is a letter that Paul has written to his beloved son

  58. in the spirit Timothy. And it's a very instructional

  59. letter, highly instructional. And I love reading these kind of

  60. letters. I love reading these kind of

  61. epistles because it gives us very clear instruction as to

  62. what it is that pleases God and what it is that we are to be

  63. looking to God for the work that he's doing in us.

  64. So it's like a father who was sitting down.

  65. And I thought about that even this past week as I was sitting

  66. down with my father. It's like a father sitting down

  67. with a young son and he's giving him instructions in life and

  68. giving him instructions on the things of the Spirit, things in

  69. the Spirit. Timothy's a young pastor and he

  70. needs the instruction from his mentor and his father in the

  71. faith. So it's almost like if you can

  72. picture Paul sitting there and Timothy basically sitting at his

  73. feet and listening to the instruction that Paul has

  74. received through spending time with the Holy Spirit.

  75. And if you remember the last thing that was discussed in

  76. chapter 3 verse 16, the verse says and without controversy

  77. great is the mystery of godliness or God likeness as it

  78. was God who was manifested in the flesh.

  79. He was justified in the spirit and he was seen by angels and he

  80. preached among the Gentiles believed on in the world and

  81. then he was received up into glory.

  82. And we talked about that the last time that we talked about

  83. first Timothy. But it's this doctrine of faith

  84. that we believe that Jesus was God in the flesh who came to be

  85. an earthly example for us to be able to actually see the word of

  86. God. But now here in in chapter 4,

  87. Paul gives Timothy a warning and gives him a prophecy.

  88. He starts it off with a prophecy as a warning.

  89. And this is something that he's talked about before about these

  90. doctrines coming into the church back in in chapter 1.

  91. He said, preach no other doctrine, Timothy, don't preach

  92. anything else other than the doctrine that we have given you.

  93. And Galatians says, if anybody preaches anything other than

  94. what we've given you, let them be accursed.

  95. I don't care if it's an Angel. If they come and preach anything

  96. other than what we have given you, let them be accursed so

  97. early. Here in this particular letter,

  98. we see that Paul's giving another warning.

  99. So let's take it up in verse one.

  100. Let's read it through to verse 5.

  101. He says. Now the Spirit expressly says

  102. that in the latter times some will depart from the faith,

  103. giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,

  104. speaking lies and hypocrisy, having their own conscience seer

  105. with a a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain

  106. from foods which God created. To be received with Thanksgiving

  107. by those who believe and know the truth.

  108. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be

  109. refused if it is received with Thanksgiving, for it is

  110. sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

  111. So we look at this and we say, well, Paul says that the Spirit

  112. expressly says. And, and what that word can also

  113. mean is that the Spirit explicitly says, or it clearly

  114. says, or it clearly points out Timothy.

  115. I don't know if it was a situation where Paul was looking

  116. in the Old Testament, was reading some old prophecies, or

  117. if it was something recently that Paul had been praying about

  118. and the Spirit revealed this to Paul.

  119. And it was probably both. But he says the spirit expressly

  120. or it clearly says that in the latter times, deceiving spirits

  121. and doctrines of demons, the people will heed to these

  122. things. Some are going to depart from

  123. the faith, and they're going to give heed to these deceiving

  124. spirits and doctrines of demons. So when he says in the latter

  125. times, that's much different than talking about the latter,

  126. the latter days, he's not talking about the end times.

  127. This is the church that is beginning.

  128. Paul had planted many churches and he's saying that in the

  129. latter times after my departure when I'm gone, as he spoke about

  130. in Acts chapter 20 when he was talking to the elders and

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  131. Ephesians. He says after I leave here,

  132. they're going to be men who are going to come in with all these

  133. deceiving doctrines and teaching things.

  134. They're going to be wolves and sheeps clothing.

  135. And Paul is saying here that in that latter times, after these

  136. things, after this point where the churches have been

  137. established in the latter times, they're going to be people who

  138. are going to come in and they are going to bring deceiving

  139. spirits and doctrines of demons, very powerful words, deceiving

  140. spirits, doctrines of demons, not just false doctrines.

  141. He's saying that they're going to have their origin and demonic

  142. warfare, demonic power, demonic influence.

  143. And he's talking about the fact that these these people are

  144. coming in with spirits that are and given doctrines that are

  145. going to be contrary to the word of God.

  146. There's going to be doctrines that people are going to come in

  147. with and cause you to question what you know about the truth.

  148. And anything that you hear or anything that you read that

  149. causes you to question the truth of the doctrine is not of God.

  150. It is of the devil. It is of the devil and it has

  151. his roots. What he's talking about here

  152. actually has his roots back in Genesis.

  153. Back in Genesis chapter 2, when the evil one came to deceive

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  154. Eve, the first thing he did was made her question what God had

  155. said to Adam. That was the first thing he did.

  156. So I'm going to go back there and I'm going to look at just a

  157. couple things just to point out how these doctrines of demons,

  158. how it started back in Genesis. So we go to Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  159. and we look at verse 16 and 17, and it simply says this.

  160. And the Lord commanded the man, saying that this was the

  161. commandment of the Lord. Of every tree of the garden you

  162. may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and

  163. evil you shall not eat, for in a day that you eat of it, you

  164. shall die. Now that's the commandment of

  165. the Lord. That's the word of the Lord.

  166. That's the truth because God only speaks truth.

  167. But look at what the devil did. Now this is when the doctrine of

  168. demon comes in Luke in chapter 3.

  169. And we're going to look right here at the end of verse one.

  170. And he said to the woman Speaking of the serpent, who was

  171. the image of the demon of the demonic spirit.

  172. And he says to the woman, has God indeed said, you shall not

  173. eat of every tree in the garden? Look how he tries to get her to

  174. question what God has said. That's what doctrines of demons

  175. do. They try to get you to question

  176. the truth of what God has said. And then if you go over to verse

  177. 4, it says then the serpent said to the woman, you will not

  178. surely die, for God knows in the day that you eat of it, your

  179. eyes will be open and you will be like God, knowing good and

  180. evil. How many doctrines are out there

  181. where they're trying to infuse this false strength is false

  182. power into people, into thinking that you yourself are God.

  183. You yourself were in control of your faith.

  184. You yourself were in control of what you do in life.

  185. You were in control. No one else has to be in

  186. control. Those Christians are crazy.

  187. They're weak people. They're dependent on somebody

  188. else or something else. But you, you have power.

  189. You're your own God. Doctrines of demons.

  190. Doctrines of demons. Listen, God has given us His

  191. Word and has everything in it that we could possibly need from

  192. Genesis to Revelation. There is not one situation that

  193. you can run into in this life where you can't see it covered

  194. in this word. Nothing.

  195. But if you do read any books other than this, make sure that

  196. those books line up totally with this.

  197. Not well, some of it does, but some of the questions, some of

  198. it just cause you to think outside the box.

  199. No, we don't need to think outside the box.

  200. We need to think inside the word, not outside a box.

  201. So just make sure that whatever you read that is consistent,

  202. totally consistent with the Word of God, because it only takes

  203. just a little bit to take you off to the right or to take you

  204. off to the left. And that's what was happening

  205. here. And he says here that they will

  206. depart from the faith. Now, that depart doesn't mean

  207. that they're going to, you know, walk away from salvation or walk

  208. away from their salvation or walk away totally from God.

  209. But they will depart from the teaching of Christian ethics.

  210. They're going to walk away from the core things of the gospel,

  211. the core things of the truth of the doctrine of God.

  212. They're going to walk away from that.

  213. They're going to stop teaching things that are rooted and

  214. grounded in the faith and start teaching other things that have

  215. come in with these doctrines of demons and these deceiving

  216. spirits. And it says they're going to

  217. give heed to those things. That means they're going to pay

  218. attention to it. They're going to actually turn

  219. toward those things. And after they do that in the

  220. way that they're going to do, the way it's going to be played

  221. out is that they're going to be speaking lies in hypocrisy.

  222. As it says they're in verse 2, they're going to be speaking

  223. lies in hypocrisy. They're going to be hypocrites

  224. like Jesus referred to the the Pharisees as hypocrites.

  225. They live hypocritic lives. They try to look one way and try

  226. to act like they're one way, but really all the bondage that they

  227. put on other people, they themselves can't do it.

  228. And these are going to, the teachers are going to be trying

  229. to look holy, try to look religious, but their doctrine is

  230. totally contrary to the things of God, totally contrary to the

  231. things of God. They're going to be people who

  232. give heed to these things and they're going to speak these

  233. lies in hypocrisy. And as a result of doing that,

  234. look at what it says at the end of verse 2.

  235. As a result of doing this and doing it over time, totally

  236. refusing the truth, standing away from the truth, standing

  237. apart from the truth, speaking consistently, things that are

  238. evil, things that are contrary to the word of God.

  239. After they do that for so long, their conscience then becomes

  240. seared with a hot iron. And that's an interesting

  241. picture. My wife and I want to go to

  242. Montana and Wyoming. We like to travel and we want to

  243. go to Montana and Wyoming. We want to do a dude ranch.

  244. I know you. You're picturing me on a horse.

  245. I know you are. What in the world is he going to

  246. do on a horse? I know, but believe it or not, I

  247. actually love horses. We we route.

  248. In fact, our first date was a horseback riding.

  249. I took a horseback riding, believe it or not, but anyway,

  250. we want to go to a dude ranch because we know that on a dude

  251. ranch, one of the things that they do is that they brand

  252. cattle, they brand young horses, they brand these things.

  253. And, and I never really considered the whole art of

  254. branding or the practice of branding or what it meant until

  255. I started studying this. And, and what's interesting

  256. about it is that the branding actually not only burns the

  257. flesh, the top flesh, but actually burns the nerve endings

  258. so that they become numb back there.

  259. They become numb back there. What I'm is what I'm told and

  260. and they can't feel, they can't feel.

  261. And I've heard people talk about having things cauterized, where

  262. they lose feeling in certain areas of their body, which is,

  263. and it's almost like the same thing, this cauterization or

  264. just branding. And this is exactly what happens

  265. when you walk in disobedience to God over a long period of time.

  266. The conscience becomes branded, it becomes insensitive to the

  267. things of God. You don't even be convicted

  268. anymore. You're not convicted anymore.

  269. Then you get further and further away and you hear his voice

  270. further and further away to the point that you can't even hear

  271. his voice anymore. You become insensitive to

  272. righteousness, become insensitive to goodness.

  273. And this is what happened with these false teachers.

  274. Their their conscience are seared with a hot iron and they

  275. don't have the ability to feel the truth anymore, to know the

  276. truth, to be able to sense the truth they don't have anymore.

  277. Their hearts are damaged. So he says here in verse three

  278. and one of the one of the things that they begin to teach, having

  279. this branded or the seared conscience.

  280. One of the things that they begin to teach is forbidding to

  281. marry and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to

  282. be received with Thanksgiving. Now the forbidding of marriage.

  283. So now since they have turned away from the doctrine of God

  284. and turned away from the truth of the gospel, they now want to

  285. forbid what God has given all of us a right to.

  286. It's clear that the Bible does not teach forbidding of

  287. marriage. It clearly teaches marriage.

  288. In fact, it's one of the first institutions that God created.

  289. But the devil, these demons, and these and these doctrines say

  290. no, we got to stay away from it. If you want to really be holy,

  291. if you want to really look righteous, if you want to really

  292. look religious, don't get married.

  293. Don't get married. No, no.

  294. That is a doctrine of demon. It's a doctrine of demons.

  295. We are to get married. Now Paul says that there are

  296. people who have the gift or who have the the heart.

  297. They're like, well, you know, there's two ways you can be a

  298. eunuch, right? We know that the one way is

  299. obviously the removal body parts, but the other way is the

  300. fact that you just decide that you will not marry and you will

  301. not have to deal with that kind of pleasure or be involved in

  302. that kind of pleasure to be with a wife.

  303. OK, that's another way, but that's not what this is talking

  304. about. This is actually forbidding

  305. people to get married. Paul says that he has the gift

  306. to be able to do that, but if that's not you, then you need to

  307. marry because it's better to marry than to burn with lust.

  308. So marriage is definitely something that God gives us a

  309. right to do. And then he says in commanding

  310. to abstain from foods which God created to be received with

  311. Thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

  312. So now we think about Peter, who had grown up in the law, grown

  313. up under the law, and when God began to present to him that he

  314. listened. This is grace.

  315. Now we're in the New Testament now and we're not forbidding you

  316. to eat things anymore the way that it was in the in the law,

  317. because it was God showing Israel his perfect

  318. righteousness, his perfect righteousness.

  319. But now all these things lead to Jesus Christ.

  320. We don't have to do that. So that the Lord showed Peter

  321. the example of all these different animals that at one

  322. time Peter would not have eaten. He called him unclean.

  323. God said don't ever call unclean what I call clean, arise and

  324. eat. And if we go back again, back to

  325. Genesis in creation, when God created these animals, he said

  326. they were good. Everything God created is good.

  327. So no, we don't have to stay away from these things.

  328. And and it's just a matter of control.

  329. These doctrines of demons are always doing things to try to

  330. control or to instill fear into people.

  331. It's being religious and legalistic and Paul said no,

  332. stay away from that. That is not true.

  333. Those are doctrines of demons for people who forbid to marry

  334. and commanding to abstain from staying from foods.

  335. I love Reesey peanut butter cups, so I'm glad my wife is in

  336. here to hear this because now if I want to get a Reesey peanut

  337. buttercup, listen, they look what was not good to eat five

  338. years ago is supposed to be good to eat now.

  339. They tell us at one time, don't eat beef, eat beef, don't eat

  340. pork, No, eat pork, don't eat this, no, eat that.

  341. I mean, it's always, always something that you're not

  342. supposed to eat. You can't eat.

  343. You can't eat it, you can't eat it, Paul said.

  344. I got a solution. Bless it, give Thanksgiving over

  345. it, pray over it, and you don't have to worry about it.

  346. Now, I realize that there are some people, because of health

  347. reasons that they should stay away from certain foods.

  348. I realize that. But it's not that it's

  349. forbidden. It's not that it's forbidden.

  350. Spiritually that is not the reason, health reasons we

  351. understand. But Paul said look, just pray

  352. over it, pray over it. And so then he says here in

  353. verse four, he says every creature as we said is good and

  354. nothing is to be refused if it is received with Thanksgiving,

  355. for it is sanctified by the word of God and is sanctified by

  356. prayer. And one of the things that we

  357. understand is that everything we do as Christians, everything we

  358. do should be set apart, should be set apart.

  359. In 1st Corinthians 10 and 31, he says whether you eat or drink or

  360. whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

  361. That means just set apart for the glory of God.

  362. So marriage, eating, possessions are all spirit.

  363. They all be spiritual issues because they're all given to us

  364. to be enjoyed. But we must understand the

  365. source. And the source is that it comes

  366. from God #1 and it's provided by God.

  367. And that's why we say prayers when we eat, right?

  368. We bless the food. We bless it because we

  369. acknowledge that it was God that created it.

  370. And he said it was good, number one.

  371. Number two, we bless it because God provided it and we're

  372. thankful. So it's more a matter of

  373. Thanksgiving. It even is just blessing the

  374. food. It's a matter of Thanksgiving,

  375. and we see where Jesus Christ himself, before he would eat, He

  376. would give thanks for his food. When he sat down to feed the

  377. 5000 and Matthew 14 and 19, before he distributed the food

  378. among the 5000 people, He sat them all down and he gave

  379. thanks. Then he broke it and he

  380. distributed. And the same thing even with the

  381. Passover. When he ate the Passover meal

  382. with his disciples, the Bible says that after He gave thanks

  383. or when He gave thanks he break it any distributed.

  384. It is important that we give thanks to God when you know I

  385. love when I'm sitting in a restaurant and there's another

  386. family that's there and we see them praying together before

  387. they eat. I love seeing that I love seeing

  388. that I love seeing young kids who understand that I don't eat

  389. anything off this table until I give thanks.

  390. That's a wonderful thing, a wonderful thing.

  391. Give thanks. So then in verse 6 he goes on,

  392. he says, if you instruct the brethren in these things and

  393. what things and all the things we just got finished talking

  394. about instructor brothers about these bad false teachers,

  395. instruct them about how to look out for these doctrines of

  396. demons and these deceiving spirits.

  397. Instructor brethren about setting things apart for the

  398. Lord's purpose and doing all things unto the Lord.

  399. He says if you do that, then you will be a good minister of Jesus

  400. Christ. Nourished.

  401. I love this word nourished in the words of faith.

  402. That word nourished. It's a powerful word.

  403. It means actually to be sustained, sustained by the
