  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. Our walk our lives should demonstrate what we believe, our

  6. lifestyle, our behavior, all that should demonstrate what we

  7. believe or not. Be one who proclaim to know God,

  8. but then our behavior disqualifies us or our behavior

  9. cause us to look like. We deny Him because of the way

  10. that we behave, but we should walk in obedience to the Lord.

  11. Our example is Jesus Christ, who loved us so much that he died

  12. for us. What do people really see when

  13. they watch how you live? In today's message, Pastor Lewis

  14. reminds us that our walk must match our talk.

  15. The way we live, the choices we make, and the love we show

  16. should clearly demonstrate what we say we believe.

  17. No one should hear us claim to know God while our behavior

  18. looks like we deny Him. Your lifestyle is the loudest

  19. sermon you'll ever possibly preach.

  20. How does your daily behavior show the world that you truly

  21. belong to Jesus now? Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book

  22. of First Timothy, chapter 4, with today's edition of Living

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  23. Waters of Grace. It is important that we give

  24. thanks to God when you know, I love when I'm sitting in a

  25. restaurant and there's another family that's there and we see

  26. them praying together before they eat.

  27. I love seeing that. I love seeing that.

  28. I love seeing young kids who understand that I don't eat

  29. anything off this table until I give thanks.

  30. That's a wonderful thing, a wonderful thing.

  31. Give thanks. So then in verse 6, he goes on,

  32. he says if you instruct the brother in these things and what

  33. things and all the things we just got finished talking about

  34. instructor brothers about these bad false teachers, instruct

  35. them about how to look out for these doctrines of demons and

  36. these deceiving spirits. Instructor brethren about

  37. setting things apart for the Lord's purpose and doing all

  38. things unto the Lord. He says, if you do that, then

  39. you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ.

  40. Nourished. I love this word nourished in

  41. the words of faith. That word nourished.

  42. It's a powerful word. It means actually need to be

  43. sustained, sustained by the words of faith, to be supplied

  44. with everything that's necessary for my life, for life and living

  45. and health is all. And my spiritual growth is all

  46. supplied to me, and I'm sustained through the words of

  47. faith to the words of faith. Studying the Word of God has

  48. impact on our lives in so many different areas.

  49. Obeying the Word of God has impact in our lives in so many

  50. different areas. It sustains us.

  51. It sustains us. And then he says it's a good

  52. minister of Jesus Christ who is sustained by the words of faith.

  53. It's a good minister that has supplied everything that is

  54. necessary for life through the Word of God.

  55. And it's important for pastors. No Pastor Clark is able to sit

  56. in here today and be fed. He feeds us so much.

  57. He feeds us so much, but he understands that it's important

  58. for him to also be fed. There's ways that you can

  59. actually know, spend so much time and be so focused on

  60. feeding everybody else and you die of starvation.

  61. It's important for us to be fed as Christians.

  62. We go out and we share Christ. We share the word of God with

  63. people, we share it with our families, we share it with our

  64. friends, we share it with our Co workers and we're always giving,

  65. sharing it and distributing. But it's also important that we

  66. be fed so we can be nourished, so that we can have what's

  67. needed to be able to give out. It's so important and then here

  68. in verse 7 and verse 7 he says, but reject, reject profane an

  69. old wise fables and exercise yourself toward godliness.

  70. Verse 8 says for bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness

  71. is profitable for all things, having the promise of the life

  72. that now is and of that which is to come.

  73. This is a faithful saying and worthy of acceptance.

  74. Paul saying here, he's addressing the whole issue of

  75. physical exercise, which was important in Greek culture

  76. because remember, they put a lot of emphasis on physical activity

  77. and physical fitness. That's why we get the Olympic

  78. Games and some of these other athletic events.

  79. They come, most of those come out of Greece because they put a

  80. lot of emphasis on that. They see physical fitness as

  81. being a self-discipline, self-discipline.

  82. They see it as being medicinal. It's good for my health, my

  83. physical health, it's good for the mental health.

  84. And they see that. So they really look very highly

  85. valued. They really highly value people

  86. who give themselves to physical fitness over there in Greece.

  87. And you know what, we used to do it here.

  88. You know, we do it here. Remember during the time when

  89. physical fitness started to get real popular and gyms were

  90. popping up everywhere physical, you know, fitness facilities

  91. were popping up everywhere. You got LA Fitness, you got at

  92. one time they had, what was it called, Scandinavian, whatever.

  93. I can't remember the name of that now, but that was a

  94. fitness. They had all kind of fitness

  95. centers, neighborhood fitness centers, you name it, and people

  96. were just gone involved in. If jogging was popular at one

  97. time, then it wasn't. Tennis was popular at one time,

  98. then it wasn't. Racquetball.

  99. Remember racquetball that was popular at one time, then it

  100. wasn't, you know, weightlifting. All the men were in the

  101. weightlifting and, and building up their bodies and being

  102. physically strong. All those things are popular at

  103. one time and then it wasn't, I remember even for myself that I,

  104. I know you can't tell by it now, but there was a time that I used

  105. to work out probably six days a week.

  106. I was really into physical fitness, I mean really into it.

  107. And I thought that if I didn't work out at least an hour, 2

  108. hours a day or what not, that man, I was terrible.

  109. I was the worst thing in the world.

  110. I wasn't saved then. I had many hours of physical

  111. fitness, 0 hours in the word of God, 0 wasn't even going to

  112. church, Wasn't even going to church.

  113. And what I'm saying here is that not that physical fitness is a

  114. bad thing, it is still a good thing to be physically fit.

  115. But when your body becomes your God, that's when it becomes a

  116. bad thing because now you've turned it into an idol.

  117. I did that. My body became my idol.

  118. I spent much more time worshipping that in front of a

  119. mirror, right? You train, They got mirrors all

  120. over the place so you can see what you look like.

  121. You're worshiping, worshiping. And I spent many times, many

  122. hours doing that on my own body. 0 hours with the Lord.

  123. And I think about what the Lord said in the garden with Peter.

  124. Peter, you couldn't watch with me for one hour, for one hour in

  125. my life, in our lives. Do we give God at least one hour

  126. as a minimum? Do we give him at least one

  127. hour? Not that it's a religious thing.

  128. Not saying that if you don't do it, then you're not as righteous

  129. as the person that does do it. That's what he's saying at all.

  130. What he's saying is where is God in our lives?

  131. Is he a priority? It's just us thinking about

  132. that, putting him in perspective.

  133. Is he a priority? So Paul's saying here, yeah,

  134. physical exercise here in verse 8.

  135. It does profit, but it profits a little.

  136. It profits a little. It's only profitable for here

  137. while we're here. It does not take you beyond the

  138. grave. And even those that are

  139. physically fit, they will die of something if Jesus Christ don't

  140. come back first. But he is saying here that it

  141. does profit a little, but the profit is minimum.

  142. There's a limited profit, but godliness, young son Timothy,

  143. Godliness is profitable for all things.

  144. It's not just profitable for you being here, but it's profitable

  145. for later on, and it's also profitable in eternity.

  146. It's profitable for all things. It's profitable for mind, body

  147. and soul, Timothy, and that's what he said to us.

  148. The word of God and pursuing godliness is profitable in all

  149. things, not just some, not just some.

  150. And the important thing is that though we must suffer because he

  151. says here, he says here having the promise of life that now is

  152. and that which is to come. And he said that that is a

  153. faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.

  154. That means it's, it's a trustworthy word.

  155. But then verse 10, he says for to this end, or in other words,

  156. for this reason, Timothy, we both labor or we strive and we

  157. suffer reproach. Why for godliness.

  158. We do it for godliness because it is profitable not only for

  159. now and it's also profitable for the life that is to come.

  160. So we strive for godliness, we seek godliness, we pursue

  161. godliness, and we suffer reproach.

  162. We suffer the shame, we suffer the mocking, we suffer the

  163. persecution. We do all that, and we do it

  164. because we trust in the look at what he says.

  165. He doesn't just say we trust in God, He says we trust in the

  166. living God, the living God not trusting in the idols that the

  167. Ephesians trusted in, not trusting in those statues that

  168. they did, the statue of Diana and the other statues, not

  169. trusting in those we're trusting in the living God and his

  170. promises are sure. We have hope, and that's what

  171. we're trusting in. That's what we're trusting in.

  172. And I pray that we put our trust in the right thing.

  173. We put our trust in the right thing, put our trust in Jesus

  174. Christ who gives us all things, but most of all he gives us the

  175. hope of salvation which we have and eternity which we have.

  176. And then he goes on, He says, who is the Savior?

  177. Meaning, meaning Jesus Christ who is the Savior of all men,

  178. especially those who believe He's a preserver.

  179. This is not a universality or universalism.

  180. He's not talking about everyone's going to be saved.

  181. That's not what he's saying. What he is saying is that he is

  182. the one who created all men. He is the one who preserves all

  183. men. He's the one who died for all

  184. men. Over here chapter 2 over in

  185. verse 4, he says who desires, meaning God desires all men to

  186. be saved, all right. And then over here in verse 6,

  187. chapter 2, verse 6, it says who gave himself a ransom for all,

  188. so he died for all and his desires that all get saved.

  189. But he realizes that it's only those who puts their faith in

  190. Jesus Christ. Only those who believe on Jesus

  191. Christ, only those who have repented and trust in Jesus

  192. Christ for their salvation will be saved, will have the benefits

  193. of salvation, which is eternal life.

  194. But yes, He died for everyone. Everyone has the opportunity to

  195. get saved and then he goes on and this is when this is the

  196. meat of it right here. And after this we'll start to

  197. wind down. But in verse 12, this is my

  198. favorite part because this is really direct instruction and it

  199. gives us exactly what we need to go into every single day.

  200. This is what we strive for as Christians.

  201. He says let no one despise your youth but be an example to the

  202. believers and this be an example to the believers or it could be

  203. be an example of the believers in both words fit in the Greek

  204. text, but it's being an example to the believers where examples

  205. to those who are in the church to our brothers and our sisters

  206. who are in the church. But it also says of the

  207. believers, that means that when we're out in the world, we're to

  208. be an example of believers to the world or to those who are

  209. not saved. And he goes and he says, what is

  210. it that we should be examples for?

  211. He gives us six things. Now, other manuscripts, there's

  212. only 5. The one that's missing in other

  213. manuscripts is Spirit. We'll talk about that when we

  214. get to it. But in this version, it gives us

  215. 6. He says we should be an example

  216. in Word. in Word, our speech should be honest and loving

  217. towards each other. We shouldn't have speech that

  218. we're talking down to each other or mocking each other or being

  219. disrespectful to each other. We shouldn't be slanderous to

  220. each other. Our speech should be honest and

  221. be loving. The Bible says even when we

  222. confront each other, if we have to confront each other with an

  223. issue, we still speak the truth and love.

  224. According to Ephesians 4 and 15, our speech should not be corrupt

  225. or shouldn't be filthy or slanderous, but it should be

  226. edifying. It should be encouraging to each

  227. other. I was listening to my brother

  228. Tom on Wednesday night and he was talking about being around

  229. people who are encouraging, being around encouraging people

  230. and how it makes you feel or how it impacts you.

  231. When you're around someone that's encouraging and when

  232. you're around someone that's encouraging, it does have a

  233. positive impact on you. It builds your help build your

  234. faith for one thing, but it also causes you to look at things a

  235. little differently, look at things a little differently.

  236. It's not that self defeated attitude that we may have walked

  237. into when we first saw them, but we leave there.

  238. We just feel better and that's what happens with people who are

  239. encouraging. So our communication should be

  240. encouraging, it should be edifying, you know, as it says

  241. in Ephesians 4 and 29. Let no corrupt word proceed out

  242. of your mouth but that which is for the necessary edification,

  243. that it may impart. Grace to the hears, not

  244. condemnation. Not more toil, you know, but but

  245. grace to the hears. Our speech should not be

  246. condemning to others, but it should always be with grace.

  247. When Jesus Christ came, he came full of grace and truth, and we

  248. should be examples of that grace and truth here in the earth

  249. realm. We should be examples of that.

  250. And even in Colossians 4 and six, he said, let your speech

  251. always be with grace, with grace.

  252. And then also he says that the word, we should also have this

  253. word, not just that we should our speech should be sanctified

  254. or should be edifying or encouraging, but we should also

  255. have knowledge of the word. So that the word when we speak

  256. to people and we share the word of God, we should do it from a

  257. place of knowledge. So that's when he's talking

  258. about growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior

  259. Jesus Christ. And then in conduct, he said we

  260. should be an examples in conduct, our walk, our lives

  261. should demonstrate what we believe, our lifestyle, our

  262. behavior. All that should demonstrate what

  263. we believe or not be one who proclaim to know God.

  264. But then our behavior disqualifies us or our behavior

  265. cause us to look like we deny him because of the way that we

  266. behave. But we should walk in obedience

  267. to the Lord. Our example is Jesus Christ who

  268. loved us so much that he died for us.

  269. That's love. Our faith is motivated through

  270. love. The things that we do or the

  271. motivation for anything that we do in ministry or even towards

  272. each other, it should always be love.

  273. It should never be because of what I can get for myself.

  274. It should never be because then I look more positive if I do

  275. this. It should never be with through

  276. selfish ambition. It should be through love.

  277. And then he says in spirit, in spirit.

  278. In other words, have an attitude that reflects the spirit of

  279. Jesus Christ. One of the greatest examples

  280. that I always referred back to is back in Luke Chapter 9 and

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  281. verse 55 when they were going through Samaria.

  282. Jesus Christ and the disciples were going through Samaria

  283. trying to get to Jerusalem, and the Samaritans denied them from

  284. going through. They denied them and his

  285. disciples got upset about it. They said, Lord, do you want us

  286. to just call down fire from heaven and have them burned up

  287. the way Elijah did it? And what was Jesus's response?

  288. There was a loving response. He said no, no, no.

  289. You don't know what spirit you are of.

  290. You don't know what spirit you. That's not my spirit.

  291. He said the Son of Man didn't come to destroy man.

  292. I came to save man. I came to save man.

  293. When we have interactions with people, we may want to destroy

  294. them, but we got to remember that's not the spirit we are of.

  295. We want to get them back. We want them to know that they

  296. offended us, and you can't do that to me.

  297. But we're not here to destroy man.

  298. We are here to save man. So then he says also we should

  299. be examples in faith. Faith leads to faithfulness.

  300. Someone who was a Christian, someone who was involved in

  301. Christianity should always be a person that's faithful, which

  302. means trustworthy. When we trust, we adhere to, we

  303. rely on Jesus Christ. We should be examples of that.

  304. Our faith leads to faithfulness. When we say we're going to do

  305. something, people should have confidence in the fact that

  306. we're going to do it and we should do it.

  307. And then of course, the last one is impurity.

  308. And Paul was very clear, and there's a reason why he wanted

  309. him to be impurity because he was in Ephesus.

  310. Ephesus was a city that was highly charged in sexual

  311. immorality, just like it is here, you know, in our country,

  312. in our world, you know, there, there's, I mean, there's so much

  313. temptation and so much immorality around us.

  314. It's so easy to get taken up into that.

  315. And Timothy was a young man. He was only about 30 years old

  316. around this time. So it was very easy for him to

  317. be tempted. And Paul said, no, we, you have

  318. to be an example, Timothy, you got to be an example for

  319. believers even in your purity. First Thessalonians chapter 4,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  320. it talks about, he said, this is the will of God for you.

  321. Even your sanctification, our purity, that's God's will for

  322. us. That's how we demonstrate who we

  323. belong to and Timothy, and that's why Paul told Timothy in

  324. First Timothy chapter 5 verse two.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  325. He told Timothy. He said listen, admonish or

  326. encourage. I'm sorry.

  327. He says encourage the young women in the church as sisters.

  328. We need to be in here. We see women, one of you, either

  329. one of you, one or the other. If I ain't married to you, then

  330. you're my sister. I treat you as my sister.

  331. If I'm married to you, then you're my wife.

  332. And this is what he's telling Timothy.

  333. I have to be pure. Timothy, you have to be pure.

  334. You have to be pure. And then he goes on and he says

  335. verse 13. He says till I, till I, till I

  336. come, give attention to reading, to exhortation and to doctrine,

  337. to reading. He's talking about public

  338. reading, reading the word of God publicly and exhortation.

  339. He's talking about preaching the word of God, encouraging people

  340. to do what the word of God says to do, encouraging people to

  341. obey that and in doctrine, which is the systematic teaching of

  342. different doctrines of the faith.

  343. For example, there's the doctrine of creation or

  344. salvation or the end times to systematically teach these

  345. things. He said Timothy, till I come

  346. give attention to those things. And then in 14, he says,

  347. Timothy, don't neglect the gift that is in you, which was given

  348. to you by prophecy with the laying on of hands by the

  349. eldership. Timothy had a gift, and that

  350. gift it was imported to. Timothy, through the laying on

  351. of hands, now God doesn't have to use other people to impart a

  352. gift. God can just give people.

  353. But that's one of the ways sometimes that people are

  354. commissioned, that people are sent out.

  355. The elders will come and they'll lay hands on them and they'll

  356. send these people out. That's one of the ways that he

  357. does it. And he said, Timothy, don't

  358. neglect that gift that was given to you.

  359. And apparently he did at one time neglected.

  360. So in Second Timothy chapter 1 and 6, he said, listen Timothy,

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  361. stir up the gift that was given to you.

  362. Don't let that gift lay dormant. And there's a lot of ways that

  363. we can neglect the gift. We can neglect it by misusing

  364. it, or we can neglect it by abusing it.

  365. One way or the other, we can neglect that gift.

  366. We shouldn't have talents that we hide or that we bury.

  367. We should use the gifts that the Lord has given us.

  368. And then the 15 says, meditate on these things.

  369. Give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be

  370. evident to all. When you're spending time with

  371. the Lord, when you're studying the Word of God more, when

  372. you're spending more time seeking God, the evidence of

  373. that becomes obvious to other people.

  374. They can see it in you when you are spending more time with the

  375. Lord, your progress becomes evident to everybody and we all

  376. want to continue to progress in the Lord.

  377. And then in verse 16, he says, take heed to yourself and to

  378. your doctrine, continuing them for doing this you will say both

  379. yourself and those who hear you. So he says, OK, you give

  380. yourselves to your ministry and to the seeking the Lord.

  381. You give yourself to that and your progress will be evident.

  382. But then, he says, also remember to take heed to yourself from

  383. time to time. Take heed to yourself into the

  384. doctrine. In other words, where am I in

  385. the faith? Where am I am I lining up with

  386. what the Word of God is telling me to do?

  387. As it says in Second Corinthians chapter 13 and five, examine

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  388. yourself as to whether you are in the faith.

  389. Am I lining up? Am I lining up?

  390. Am I where I need to be? Are there things that I need to

  391. give to the Lord that I have not surrendered myself to yet?

  392. Are there things I need to give to the Lord?

  393. What am I trusting Lord to change in my life and in my

  394. heart? And am I really trusting and

  395. seeking Him to do it? Acknowledging those things and

  396. we need to understand that when we do those things, we both save

  397. ourself and we save those who hear us.

  398. When we are good examples to the Lord, people who see us then

  399. want what we have and those people get saved.

  400. They come looking to the Lord. A good example of that was Paul

  401. when he and Silas was in jail in Philippi, when they were in jail

  402. because of the way they behave themselves, being under

  403. persecution, being tormented, beaten in stocks, because of the

  404. way they behave themselves, the jailer came to them and said

  405. what must I do to be saved? May our lives be that way, that

  406. people see our conduct in every area of our lives and it be

  407. something that's sought to them. They want, they want it, they

  408. want it. What must I do to be saved?

  409. So Paul says, look, we have to preach the Word, we have to

  410. practice the Word, and we have to progress in the Word.

  411. Timothy. That's what a good minister

  412. does. This is what Paul is saying to

  413. Timothy, because when we do these things, then we build up

  414. ourselves, but then we also help win the loss when we do those

  415. things. Amen.

  416. God bless you. Thank you for tuning in to

  417. Living Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harrell.

  418. We're currently in the books of First and Second Timothy.

  419. Some of the things included in these New Testament letters from

  420. Paul are that the young and newly established Pastor Timothy

  421. was being encouraged to hold fast to what was true.

  422. He was challenged to confront and address the false teachers

  423. that were rising up. He was also reminded to accept

  424. his calling to the ministry with gratefulness and to address the

  425. happenings going on in the Ephesian church.

  426. Paul was imparting his experience and knowledge to the

  427. next generation. Timothy was receptive to

  428. learning and gleaning what he could from Paul's wisdom.

  429. This is how it should be in ministry across multiple

  430. generations. Those who have lived a little

  431. more life should be open to sharing their successes and also

  432. things they've learned along the way.

  433. That we're not a wind. The younger generations coming

  434. up can learn and appreciate much from those ahead of them, and

  435. perhaps avoid some of the same pitfalls that their mentors work

  436. through mentoring. It's a beautiful relationship

  437. when the hearts are in the right place to learn and grow.

  438. We trust that you're in a community where this is

  439. happening. Older ones providing advice and

  440. wisdom, and each side learning and growing from one another.

  441. This certainly was the case for Paul and Timothy as they were

  442. comrades for the sake of the gospel.
