  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. Paul was called to communicate the heart of God.

  6. So Paul wasn't there to protest against slaves.

  7. And we see the word slaves. This is not slaves the way that,

  8. you know, certain groups of people had to endure.

  9. Obviously I'm African American, so my experience and

  10. understanding about slaves is much different.

  11. He's not talking about a group of people who's being oppressed.

  12. Slaves are actually people who serve other people, and some of

  13. them give themselves to do it. What does it look like to speak

  14. God's heart instead of just protesting the world's wrongs?

  15. In today's message, Pastor Lewis explains that Paul was sent to

  16. reveal the heart of God, not to March against every injustice.

  17. When Scripture speaks of slaves, it's not describing the brutal

  18. oppression some groups have endured.

  19. It refers to servants who willingly bound themselves to

  20. another. Paul's calling was bigger than

  21. political reform. How do you focus on sharing

  22. God's heart above every other 'cause now?

  23. Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter 6,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  24. with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  25. First Timothy Chapter 6. Now as we go into First Timothy

1 Timothy 6 chapter mention 1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  26. Chapter 6, this is going to be more about instruction, more

  27. instruction that Paul is giving to his young son, Timothy.

  28. And as I asked you, what helps me because I'm kind of my wife

  29. and myself are kind of visual people.

  30. And I like to envision Paul not just handing Timothy a letter,

  31. but I like to envision Paul sitting before Timothy and

  32. instructing him. Much like the way that you have

  33. mentors that you sit in front of or people that you spend time

  34. with. And I like to envision Timothy

  35. sitting before his father in the Spirit and receiving all these

  36. truths and receiving these instructions and how personal

  37. Paul is about giving those instructions, both corporately

  38. for the church. Because Paul knew that this

  39. would be read. It was intended to be read

  40. before the church, just like it was intended in God's

  41. foreknowledge that it would be read before this church.

  42. Amen. But I'd like to imagine the fact

  43. that Timothy is getting this first hand instruction, these

  44. things that can have serious impact on his life and also on

  45. the life of the church. So as we read through this,

  46. we'll begin to see how God in his foreknowledge and in his

  47. sovereignty, how he speaks to very important situations,

  48. specifically giving instruction to his young pastor Timothy.

  49. So we start with verse one, and he says, let as many bond

  50. servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy

  51. of all honor, so that the name of God and his doctrine may not

  52. be blasphemed. And those who have believing

  53. masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren,

  54. but rather serve them because those who are benefited are

  55. believers. And beloved, teach, teach and

  56. exhort these things. Timothy.

  57. So basically what we're seeing here is that Paul is now

  58. speaking to those who are in the church or about those who are in

  59. the church who are slaves. Now when we see the word slaves

  60. and now a lot of people, you know, feel like, well, wait a

  61. minute. Why is Paul giving him

  62. instructions about how to act as slaves and not being a little

  63. harder about the fact that there are slaves?

  64. And it's a very simple explanation for that.

  65. Paul wasn't called to do that. He wasn't called to protest

  66. against being slaves or not being slaves.

  67. Paul was called to preach the gospel.

  68. Paul was called to teach doctrine.

  69. Paul was called to communicate the heart of God.

  70. So Paul wasn't there to protest against slaves.

  71. And we see the word slaves. This is not slaves the way that,

  72. you know, certain groups of people had to endure.

  73. Obviously, I'm African American, so my experience and

  74. understanding about slaves is much different.

  75. He's not talking about a group of people who was being

  76. oppressed. Slaves are actually people who

  77. serve other people, and some of them give themselves to do it

  78. because they can't pay debts or they can't feed their families

  79. or or they can't take care of themselves.

  80. Or maybe they owed something and because they couldn't pay it,

  81. they were sold into this. So Paul is saying it doesn't

  82. matter about the fact that you're a slave.

  83. What matter is that you are demonstrating godliness in the

  84. fact that you are being a slave. So as we look at this today, how

  85. will we communicate this today? We all have employers and we are

  86. employees, so it would be the same thing.

  87. How do we act on our job? How do we treat our bosses?

  88. How do we respond to things on the job?

  89. Now, this is particularly personal for me because just to

  90. give you a little quick illustration of how wrong we can

  91. do this thing, there was a time many years ago when I worked for

  92. a company and I was one of the only salespeople in that company

  93. and I had a boss. She was a little younger than

  94. me, but she was ambitious. She wanted to work her way up.

  95. So as we were going through different things, there were

  96. some misfilings, there were some sales that got dropped.

  97. And it wasn't me that did it, it was her who did it.

  98. But she was the one who met with the Home Office and she blamed

  99. it on me. And when I found out about this,

  100. I confronted her and I was saved at the time.

  101. And I confronted her and I wanted to know why.

  102. And she admitted that she panicked.

  103. And then she threw me under the bus because it was convenient.

  104. She admitted that. So I had to do a lot of praying

  105. because at that particular time, my heart went cold.

  106. It went very cold. And I said I will no longer go

  107. above and beyond again. I'll only do the bare minimum.

  108. I won't even speak to her anymore.

  109. I'll just come in, go in my office and do what I'm supposed

  110. to do. And at that particular time, I

  111. had a friend that I was in very close contact with and we would

  112. get together from time to time and get into the word of God.

  113. And he called me out on that. He said, brother, you are wrong.

  114. You are wrong and God is not going to do anything to move you

  115. out of that situation until your heart changes hit me right

  116. between the eyes. So I had to repent.

  117. So Paul is saying here, look, it doesn't matter whether they're

  118. believing or unbelieving. You are to honor them.

  119. That means respect them. You're to respect your bosses or

  120. your owners or your masters. You respect them.

  121. Why? So that the name of God and his

  122. doctrine is not blasphemy. I was not being a very good

  123. witness for Christ. Why would this woman ever even

  124. consider being a Christian or giving her life to Christ if

  125. this is how a Christian acts? I was called on that.

  126. So Paul is saying to you just like he's saying to me, we got

  127. to be a witness no matter what situation we're in.

  128. We got to be a witness for Christ.

  129. We have to be an example of testimony so that the name of

  130. God is not blasphemed, so that the doctrine of God, the gospel

  131. is not blasphemed. So then he goes on in verse 2

  132. and he says, and those who have believing masters, let them not

  133. despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them

  134. because those who are being benefited are believers and

  135. beloved. You know, sometimes we can think

  136. that if we're, if we're working for somebody who's a Christian,

  137. you know, we think that we can slide a little bit, then we can

  138. get some privileges that other people can't get.

  139. You know, I can push things a little further to the to the

  140. line. You know, I can push the

  141. envelope a little further because hey, he's a Christian

  142. just like me. You know, he ain't going to tell

  143. on me or he's not going to come down hard on me or he's not

  144. going to hold me accountable. Paula said no, no, we should

  145. honor them and respect them as well.

  146. In fact even more so, we should serve them even more because

  147. they benefit. They benefit from our service of

  148. them and they are brothers or sisters in the faith.

  149. Why we wouldn't want to do anything that would bring or put

  150. them in a position that they would have to make a tough

  151. decision. Why put them in that position?

  152. Why put them in a position where they may have to consider firing

  153. you because you come in late all the time or because you're doing

  154. things that you shouldn't be doing on company time, or

  155. because you're disrespecting them or because your work is

  156. half of what it could be? That's not a good testimony and

  157. you're believing boss doesn't benefit.

  158. So Paul deals with that right from the beginning and then he

  159. goes into verse 3 and he says if anyone teaches otherwise and

  160. does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our

  161. Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with

  162. godliness, in other words of the doctrine which conforms with

  163. godliness or the doctrine that teaches godliness.

  164. He is proud verse 4, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with

  165. disputes and arguments over words from which come envy,

  166. strife, revelings, evil suspicions, useless wranglings

  167. of men, of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who

  168. suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

  169. Paul says from such, withdraw yourself.

  170. So he says if anyone teaches otherwise, that means if anyone

  171. teaches against the gospel, against the doctrine, against

  172. the words of Jesus Christ, if anyone teaches against that, as

  173. Christians we should not ever put ourselves in a position to

  174. even listen to or to be persuaded by any doctrine or any

  175. word that is contrary to the word of Jesus Christ, should not

  176. even put ourselves in that position.

  177. But Paul says if anyone teaches that way, you know, they're not

  178. consenting to hold some words. So we shouldn't listen to them

  179. if they're not consenting to hold some words, which are the

  180. words of Jesus Christ and the things that he teaches and to

  181. the doctrine which conforms with godliness.

  182. We know what godliness is. Anything that someone would

  183. teach that's contrary to godliness or God likeness should

  184. not even be listening to that. We should not even be listening

  185. at all. He says that.

  186. Now this is the character of a person that does that.

  187. Verse 4, He's proud. This is a person that's puffed

  188. up with pride. They're teaching because they

  189. want to just spell out their knowledge.

  190. I'm deep, I'm deep. Listen, how deep this is, I'm

  191. going to take another vantage point.

  192. Look at this from another vantage point.

  193. No, we only need to see it from 1 vantage point.

  194. That's from the point of Jesus Christ.

  195. So they start to talk about all these deep words and they get

  196. obsessed. And this is a person who gets

  197. obsessed over disputes. And really, when you study it

  198. out, it's, it's really like a, a very sick desire to argue, a

  199. very morbid desire to get into arguments.

  200. And this is a person who's spilling out false doctrine, but

  201. then they want to argue about it.

  202. They want to create division about it.

  203. They want to dispute with you about it.

  204. You're sharing the word of God. They're talking about their

  205. doctrine and trying to argue, to try to justify it.

  206. And Paul says it's an obsession, it's a evil desire.

  207. It's a sick desire to dispute and argue over words, over words

  208. that they take in A twist to mean what it is that they want

  209. the word to say. Paul said be careful with that.

  210. Now, from this, from someone who teaches that the only things

  211. that come out of that, the result of that kind of teaching

  212. is what follows envy, strife, revelings, which is basically

  213. abusive language, evil suspicions or evil surmisings,

  214. useless wrangling. That's constant friction,

  215. constant friction. People constantly opposing you,

  216. constantly opposing you. You're teaching the gospel and

  217. they're constantly opposing it with their own thoughts, their

  218. own ways, their own words, their own theories, he said.

  219. These are men of corrupt minds. That means their minds are

  220. corrupt. They're defiled corrupt minds

  221. and destitute of the truth, robbed of the truth.

  222. They're robbed of the truth because they've abandoned the

  223. truth for so long. So they're robbed of the truth.

  224. Who suppose that godliness is a means of gain?

  225. This is nothing more than the bad teaching of prosperity

  226. gospel, nothing more than that. To see godliness as a means of

  227. gain. It's a way to get money for

  228. them. It's not about building up

  229. lives. It's not about building people

  230. up spiritually. It's not about for them.

  231. It's not about edifying people or bringing in souls.

  232. It's not about that for them. It's about let's teach this

  233. prosperity message because it entices people and they make

  234. money from it and they're using the gospel as a means, a means

  235. of gain. That is not what the gospel.

  236. That's a covetous attitude. It's a covetous attitude.

  237. And then he says here in verse 6, now godliness with

  238. contentment is great gain. And I just want to talk about

  239. contentment just for a second. Contentment is basically an

  240. inner sufficiency that keeps us at peace despite outward

  241. circumstances. Some people can only be content

  242. if they have enough money. Some people can only be content

  243. if they're with the person that they want to be with.

  244. Some people can only be content if the circumstances are in

  245. their favor. That's the only way they can be

  246. content. Paul is saying contentment is an

  247. inner sufficiency, not based on anything outside of me.

  248. It's not based on my bank account.

  249. It's not based on the size of my house.

  250. It's not based on me driving the car I want to drive.

  251. It's not based on me being with this person.

  252. Not because I like what's inside of them, because I like the way

  253. they look on the outside. Paul is saying that's not what

  254. contentment is. Godliness in the heart is true

  255. contentment. Wealth can't even purchase that

  256. wealth. Can't purchase that kind of

  257. contentment wealth can't purchase it no matter how much

  258. money you get, you still won't ever achieve contentment because

  259. you're going to always want more.

  260. These who depend on your wealth and your riches for peace and

  261. contentment will never be satisfied, will never be

  262. satisfied. But Job looked at it from a

  263. different way back in Job chapter 1 and verse 21, he had a

    Job 1 chapter mention

  264. very healthy perspective of contentment and money.

  265. He says, listen, naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked

  266. I shall return there in the Ecclesiastes 5 and 15, Solomon

  267. said as he came from his mother's womb, naked shall he

  268. return to go as he came, and he shall take nothing from his

  269. labor which he may carry away in his hand.

  270. So contentment has got to be our godliness, because it's our

  271. godliness that goes beyond this world.

  272. Riches only go as far as this world goes.

  273. But once we leave this world, riches does us no more good.

  274. It only goes as far as this world goes.

  275. And Paul says from such people, people who have that attitude,

  276. people who preach those things, he said withdraw yourself.

  277. And he said godliness with contentment is great game for

  278. seven. We brought nothing into this

  279. world and it is certain we will carry nothing out of it.

  280. And having now this is what Paul is saying is that shows

  281. contentment. He says having food and clothing

  282. with fees, we shall be content having food and clothing.

  283. Those are the particulars. Those are the necessary things

  284. that we have. Even Jesus himself said, look,

  285. you know foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but

  286. the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his own head.

  287. He has nowhere to lay his own head.

  288. Matthew 633 said, But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his

  289. righteousness, and these things, these necessary things will be

  290. added to you. Contentment is being satisfied

  291. with the situation ordained by God.

  292. So then we go into verse 9, which begins to talk about two

  293. types of people as it relates to wealth, Two types of people.

  294. The first one is those who desire to be rich.

  295. Now these are people here in the church.

  296. We're talking about the church. We're not talking about the

  297. world. The first group of people that

  298. he's talking about are those who desire to be rich.

  299. And he says, so those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,

  300. in a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which

  301. drown men in destruction and perdition.

  302. That's a very interesting picture when you think about

  303. that, being a pitcher person. It says that those who desire to

  304. be rich, they fall into temptation and a snare.

  305. And we know that those things all have to do with what's going

  306. on the inside of us. And the snare are pitfalls that

  307. we fall into. And it says and have fallen to

  308. many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction.

  309. Now it's the picture of a man being taken down underwater,

  310. being taken down and held down, weighted down by destruction by

  311. their lusts and by perdition by their lusts.

  312. They got so many things that they're lusting for.

  313. It's like a weight on them because they can never attain it

  314. all. So it's just constant, constant

  315. worrying and constant striving for something that they can

  316. never really achieve and be satisfied with.

  317. And it's like a weight that takes them down and holds them

  318. and drowns them in it. And then it says here in verse

  319. 10. And this is a very well used

  320. scripture, but probably one of the most quoted scriptures.

  321. That we have in the New Testament, it says for the love

  322. of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

  323. Now, money is not evil. God created money, Money is not

  324. evil, he said. The love of it is what's evil.

  325. Because once we develop a love for money, it becomes an idol

  326. and we put it in a position that's even higher than we put

  327. God, and we begin to do all the kind of things in order to

  328. obtain money because of our love for money.

  329. And it said it is not the root of all kinds of evil.

  330. The Bible says it is a root of all kinds of evil.

  331. There are many different paths and ways to end up on an evil

  332. path. Money is just one of them, money

  333. is just one of them. But it is indeed a way to end up

  334. on an evil path. The love of money for which some

  335. have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced

  336. themselves through with many sorrows, The love of money.

  337. And what is so sad about that? Because the love of money leads

  338. men into many, many ways of air, many ways of air, the desire of

  339. riches are traps. It leads us into bondages and it

  340. causes the word of God to become unfruitful.

  341. It being choked out the cares of this world and the deceitfulness

  342. of riches and the desires of other things.

  343. That's the word speaks about in Mark chapter 4, verse 18, which

    Mark 4:18

  344. in the parable, the sober, it chokes out the truth of the word

  345. and instead people focus on the cares of this world and the

  346. deceitfulness of riches and riches are deceitful and the

  347. desire for other things. These foolish and harmful lusts

  348. will take us down. And it has destroyed many of

  349. people. It's the love of money that has

  350. destroyed marriages. It's destroyed companies, it's

  351. destroyed relationships. It destroys families.

  352. Someone gets a trust or something and and you know,

  353. someone passes and when it's time to go read the will, Oh my

  354. goodness, people begin. I mean, they stop speaking

  355. because they got more than they got.

  356. It breaks up families. People stop speaking for years

  357. over money and the bad thing about it and I've watched this

  358. happen before when it says here for some have strayed from the

  359. faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with

  360. many sorrows. There's so many people that I've

  361. seen I've witnessed myself that has a gift given by God to

  362. either sing. There are great musicians or

  363. very gifted communicators of the word of God, and they may start

  364. out using that gift to serve the Lord.

  365. They start out using that gift to serve the Lord.

  366. But as the love of money creeps into their hearts, because

  367. somebody said to them, you could be making so much more money.

  368. You could be driving so much of A better car.

  369. You could be living in such a bigger house, You could be

  370. having so many more things at your disposure, and they begin

  371. to leave the faith and begin to sing for the world.

  372. And I've watched people as their lives crumble as a result of

  373. that. This has been another

  374. encouraging edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  375. Pastor Louis Harrell has shared some good reminders for us to

  376. learn and walk in today as he's teaching through the books of

  377. First and Second Timothy. There are useful practices and

  378. advice that the apostle Paul offers to Timothy in these books

  379. from a fellow pastor, Paul imparts some wisdom to Timothy

  380. about solid leadership and what some of the criteria should be

  381. for leadership. There are specific passages

  382. directed toward men and women, respectively, and All in all,

  383. there's much to gain in coming to an awareness of God's heart

  384. for each person and God's purposes for each one.

  385. We're happy that you've taken the time today to listen.

  386. We invite you to come here the next edition.

  387. In the meantime, when you have some time to spare today, go

  388. check out our website, calvarychapelonline.com.

  397. others and invite them to listen on Grace FM at 91.7.

  398. That's all we have for today, but we're so glad that you've

  399. been with us. There's more to dig into here in

  400. First and Second Timothy, so let's gear up for some more

  401. great teachings from Pastor Lewis next time here on Living

  402. Waters of Grace.
