  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. Join in on that with me. Don't be fearful continue to do

  6. what God has called you to do and then he says here in verse

  7. 9, he says who has saved with us a holy calling.

  8. He called us to be separate from the world.

  9. The world is not going to go through those things.

  10. The world is not going to take that risk, but because of what

  11. we believe in and because what we know is waiting for us, that

  12. promise of life, we can continue to do what we've been called to

  13. do. And whatever happens, happened.

  14. Faith is the substance hoped for, the things unseen.

  15. Literally, faith is believing in something that you can't see.

  16. So that means that faith requires risk.

  17. How can we as followers of Jesus take risks?

  18. Well, it requires us to 1st believe in the One who empowers

  19. us to do the things that He's called us to do.

  20. When we believe in God, God moves.

  21. Now, that doesn't mean that God doesn't move just because we

  22. don't believe. God's will is like water.

  23. It will always take the path of least resistance.

  24. But when we believe, walk in faith, God moves in bigger ways.

  25. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of Second Timothy chapter

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  26. 1, as he continues his message last words.

  27. He sees Paul getting arrested and about to be executed, and

  28. he's in the same ministry. He is testifying to the same

  29. name that Paul was testifying to that's leading to his impending

  30. execution. Maybe that caused Timothy to

  31. weep. We don't really know what caused

  32. Timothy to weep. But Paul says I'm mindful of

  33. those tears, that I may be filled with joy when I call into

  34. remembrance. Your genuine faith, Timothy,

  35. your faith is not hypocritical. Your faith does not come from

  36. surface belief. Your faith comes from the real,

  37. the real source. Your faith is based upon your

  38. knowledge and your belief in Jesus Christ.

  39. That is genuine faith. It's faith in the face of fear.

  40. It's faith in the face of all things of persecution.

  41. It's faith in the face of danger.

  42. That's genuine faith, Faith and temptation, Timothy.

  43. Your faith is not hypocritical because your examples were good.

  44. First, it was in your your grandmother, your grandmother

  45. Lois, she was a faithful woman. And that was passed down to your

  46. mother, Eunice, who was a faithful woman.

  47. They pray for you, Timothy, and now you have genuine faith.

  48. I'm going to tell you something. Most of us, and I know I am,

  49. chief, I am definitely one who are here as a result of the

  50. faithful prayers of someone who prayed for us.

  51. Maybe it was your grandmother, maybe it was your grandfather,

  52. maybe it was your father, maybe it was your mother.

  53. For me, it was mother, grandmother and my older sister.

  54. They desperately prayed for me to come out of those streets,

  55. and maybe somebody did that for you.

  56. So we have evidence that the fervent prayers of the righteous

  57. availeth much, and Timothy understood that.

  58. So if you're praying for somebody that's not in here yet,

  59. if you're praying for somebody that you want to see walking

  60. with the Lord before you leave, don't stop praying.

  61. Regardless of what you see, regardless of what you see.

  62. It's not about what we see. It's what we believe.

  63. We serve a God that is able to change hearts, to change lives,

  64. to change the destiny of men and women.

  65. He is able. So don't give up your prayers.

  66. Don't give up your prayers. And then he goes on and he says

  67. in verse 6, he says, therefore, I remind you now, this is his

  68. first. If you're taking notes, this is

  69. his first instruction to Timothy.

  70. He says, therefore I remind you, stir up the gift of God that is

  71. in you through the laying on of my hands.

  72. Stir up the gift that's instruction #1 Timothy.

  73. Stir up that gift that is in you.

  74. Every one of us have a gift that's in us that came to us at

  75. the time that we got saved. When the Holy Spirit came to

  76. dwell on the inside of us, it brought gifts.

  77. So we all have a gift, but non use fear and other things can

  78. cause that gift to go dormant. Circumstances, frustrations,

  79. problems in ministry, it can cause that gift to go dormant.

  80. Non use of that gift. And Paula said, Timothy, stir up

  81. that gift. Fan those embers into a flame.

  82. Timothy, don't let your ministry die.

  83. Don't let your faith die. Don't let your testimony die.

  84. Stir it up. And that's what He's saying to

  85. us. He sent it to me and I know He's

  86. saying it to you as well. Stir up that gift that's in you.

  87. God placed something in you. I don't know what it is, but He

  88. placed a gift that's in each and every one of you who believe.

  89. Stir it up. Don't let it sit and go dormant.

  90. Don't let the enemy be able to celebrate because you are not

  91. serving the Lord in the way that God has called you to do it

  92. because your gift went dormant. Stir it up.

  93. Stir it up. But it's also important that we

  94. remember that the gift is in you.

  95. You're not the gift, he said. The gift that's in you.

  96. We're not the gift. Don't let people think you're

  97. the gift. Don't let people make you

  98. believe that you are the gift. The gift is in you.

  99. It's in US whatever that gift is teaching praise and worship, AV

  100. leadership, whatever the gift is administration.

  101. It doesn't matter. The gift is what's in you.

  102. So he goes on that was necessary just to put out there before we

  103. move on. Then verse 7 he says, for God

  104. has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love

  105. and a sound mind that was must have been necessary to say Paul

  106. would not have made that admonition if it wasn't

  107. necessary. Somewhere along the line Timothy

  108. must have became timid somewhere along the line.

  109. Somewhere along the line Timothy must have become pretty silent

  110. about his gift and was not teaching the word of God or

  111. doing what he needed to do with the gift that was placed in him.

  112. Somewhere along the line something was going on where

  113. Timothy was becoming fearful. Otherwise Paul would not have

  114. made that admonition to him. He would not have brought that

  115. up. And it was right after he said,

  116. stir up the gift. And then he says, for God has

  117. not given us a spirit of fear. So you put those two together.

  118. That tells us that Timothy somewhere along the line became

  119. fearful. Maybe it's because he was seeing

  120. so many people executed around him.

  121. Maybe it's because he was seeing the treatment.

  122. Maybe it was because he was getting threats from Nero.

  123. Maybe he was because the older people that was around him was

  124. just disrespecting him so much that he become fearful.

  125. But whatever the case was, he must have become fearful.

  126. And Paul said God did not give us a spirit of fear.

  127. Timothy, God gave us a lot of gifts came and a lot of things

  128. came with the spirit that God gives us.

  129. A lot of things come with the spirit that God gives us.

  130. In fact, if you go to Isaiah Chapter 11 verses one, it talks

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  131. about the seven spirits of God, the fear of the Lord, the spirit

  132. of counsel and might, the spirit of understanding and knowledge,

  133. and the spirit of fear. All those things come with the

  134. spirit. Fear is not one of them.

  135. Anything that we fear, it's the fear of God.

  136. And that's a reverent fear, not a oh, I'm so afraid fear.

  137. It's the fear of God, the reverent fear of God.

  138. So somewhere along the line Timothy became fearful.

  139. So he goes on here and he says, but what did come with that

  140. spirit was power, love, and a sound mind or a disciplined

  141. mind, a mind of self-control. That's what did come with that

  142. spirit. But not fear.

  143. Fear wasn't one of them. So Paul's acknowledging Timothy,

  144. he says, look, serve boldly and not fearfully.

  145. And he's given us that same admonition to serve boldly and

  146. not fearfully. So he goes on here in verse 8,

  147. so #1 stir up the gift of God #2 Now verse 8.

  148. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor

  149. of me his prisoner. That's number two.

  150. Do not be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord.

  151. When you look at that, when you look it up in the Greek, it

  152. really talks about don't be disillusioned or don't be

  153. disappointed of the testimony of the Lord.

  154. There's a lot of things that happens that could disappoint

  155. us, so we lose faith. We can lose faith in the

  156. testimony of Jesus Christ, so we don't give it as much anymore.

  157. And Paul says don't be ashamed of it.

  158. Don't be ashamed to suffer for him.

  159. Don't be ashamed to talk about Jesus Christ, Timothy.

  160. He is the Messiah. He is the real deal.

  161. He is the Son of God, He is the Christ.

  162. You don't have to be ashamed. You won't be disappointed if you

  163. put your faith in him, Timothy. You won't be disappointed,

  164. Timothy, Don't be ashamed. Don't be ashamed.

  165. And that's what he talks about. Then he says nor of me, his

  166. prisoner. Some people can be ashamed.

  167. Wait a minute, You, you're doing all that teaching out there.

  168. I mean, think about how some people can say that, you know,

  169. you're always talking about Jesus and you talk about your

  170. faith, but look at you, you're suffering.

  171. Look at you, you going through, look at you.

  172. You ain't prospering. Don't care about that because we

  173. have the promise of life that Paul talked about at the

  174. beginning. I don't care about what goes on

  175. here in this world. So what I know, I serve a God

  176. who's able to do anything that he wants to do for me and for

  177. you. I serve a God who's able.

  178. But the promise that he gave us was the promise of life, and

  179. that's what we trust in. So he says.

  180. So don't be ashamed of me either, just because I'm

  181. suffering. But instead of being ashamed,

  182. and this is #3 the third instruction, Share with me in

  183. the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God.

  184. Timothy, join me in the sufferings.

  185. Join me in it. Suffer with me, you know, Don't

  186. try to avoid it. Preach the Word.

  187. And if you have to suffer as a result of preaching the Word, as

  188. a result of sharing the message of the gospel, so be it.

  189. Then join in it with me, Paul said to Jesus.

  190. I want to know you in the fellowship of your suffering.

  191. I want to stand the way you did. Jesus stood and looked of all of

  192. the people who wanted to kill him every day.

  193. He looked right into their face and continued to teach what God

  194. gave him to teach, to preach what God gave him, to preach, to

  195. do what God gave him to do. Looking right into the face of

  196. those who he knew wanted to kill him, he kneeled down in front of

  197. the man who he knew was going to betray him.

  198. But he didn't become ashamed of it or back off of it.

  199. He washed his feet anyway. He washed his feet anyway.

  200. And Paul is saying, let's join in on that.

  201. Join in that with me, join in on that with me.

  202. Don't be fearful. Continue to do what God has

  203. called you to do. And then he says here in verse

  204. 9, he says who has saved with us a holy calling.

  205. He called us to be separate from the world.

  206. The world is not going to go through those things.

  207. The world is not going to take that risk, but because of what

  208. we believe in and because what we know is waiting for us, that

  209. promise of life, We can continue to do what we've been called to

  210. do. And whatever happens, happens.

  211. And he's going to tell us why that's important for him a

  212. little further down. But he called us with a holy

  213. calling. That means it's a calling to be

  214. separate. You know, you're a chosen

  215. people. You know, you're a royal

  216. priesthood, you're a holy nation.

  217. You're separate. You're separate.

  218. You're a peculiar people. You're a people unto me.

  219. You're separated unto me. So he says, walk in that.

  220. And then he goes on and he says according, not according to your

  221. works, but according to his own purpose and grace Things here in

  222. the world that we achieve. We achieve them because of our

  223. efforts. We achieve them because of our

  224. efforts. You get a job based on your

  225. history of work, things that you have done.

  226. It's based on your own effort. There's a lot of kids right now

  227. always relate things to sports, but there's a lot of kids right

  228. now that are playing high school basketball.

  229. OK, There's thousands of high school basketball teams around

  230. the country and thousands of basketball players.

  231. There's only a few. There's only a few colleges that

  232. will give scholarships to these players.

  233. So all these players are trying to earn a scholarship and

  234. they're doing it through their works, but that's in the world.

  235. What Paul is saying here is that you're going to be called out,

  236. but it's not going to be because of your effort.

  237. It's going to be because of God's own purpose and grace.

  238. Nothing that we do makes us credible to be called out by

  239. God. Nothing.

  240. It's all according to His purpose, and He's given it to us

  241. through His grace. That grace is that unmerited

  242. favor, but it's also that enablement to do what God has

  243. given us to do for his purpose. Amen.

  244. And then he goes on and he says here, which was given to us in

  245. Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the

  246. appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death

  247. and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

  248. Here's Paul again focusing on the promise of life.

  249. He says, look, this thing was already established, and it was

  250. done before time began. Not before your time, but even

  251. before our time, OK, Not before God's time.

  252. God doesn't have a time, right? He's infinite.

  253. There's no beginning, there's no end.

  254. But it was before our time began.

  255. It was already established, already steps, because God is

  256. sovereign. He knows the end from the

  257. beginning. We see to the corner.

  258. He sees around the corner but what he saw.

  259. But what he brought to us whenever it was revealed was

  260. basically the same message that was given to the prophets of

  261. old. He abolished death through the

  262. cross and brought life and immortality to light through the

  263. gospel. And that's the message again,

  264. the message that God wants us to preach.

  265. That's what Jesus wants us to send out.

  266. It's the message of life through the gospel.

  267. That's what the gospel is. It's a message of life.

  268. Those who don't believe the wrath of God abides on them.

  269. That's death, that's death. But for those who believe, it's

  270. eternal life. It's eternal life.

  271. He's given it to us. And then he goes on here in

  272. verse 11 and he says to which I was appointed a preacher,

  273. apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles.

  274. Paul said it's for this gospel that we're talking about that

  275. I'm talking about with you now. It's for that gospel that I was

  276. appointed to be an apostle. I was appointed to be 1 sent

  277. from God with the message to share with everyone.

  278. I was appointed that. And then he says, I was also

  279. appointed to be a preacher. And a preacher is a herald, one

  280. who goes out and he shares he, he exhorts and he shares the

  281. gospel. He exhorts, he he shares the

  282. good news. Paul said I was appointed to be

  283. that as well. And he's also appointed to be a

  284. teacher. And that's a systematic

  285. instructor of the doctrines of Christ.

  286. I was appointed to do those things.

  287. That's why I was called by God. But then he says here for this

  288. reason, in verse 12, for this reason, I also suffer these

  289. things. For this reason, for the message

  290. of life that God has given me, I suffer the things that I'm

  291. suffering right now because of the message of the gospel.

  292. That's why he's suffering, he says here.

  293. And then he says, I'm suffering these things.

  294. Nevertheless. Nevertheless, Paul's never

  295. focused on his situation. He's never once focused on the

  296. fact that I'm in a dungeon, the fact that I'm cold, the fact

  297. that I'm lonely. He never focused on that.

  298. The fact that I'm looking at impending death.

  299. He never focused on that, he says.

  300. But nevertheless, I am not ashamed.

  301. You know, if you can read this and not feel some enthusiasm,

  302. some a spirit rousing up the stirring of the Spirit reading

  303. this, Paula said, I don't care that I'm looking at death.

  304. I don't care about that. I don't care because I know who

  305. I believed. I know who I believe.

  306. I believe the Messiah, Jesus Christ is the Messiah.

  307. I'm not believing what those Pharisees are saying about Him.

  308. He is the Messiah. He's the truth.

  309. He's the way, and he is the life.

  310. I know who I believe. I know it.

  311. It's in my knower. He said I know who I believe.

  312. I am persuaded. Paul says I'm already persuaded.

  313. You know, no one has to persuade me.

  314. No one has to convince me. I am persuaded that he's able to

  315. keep what I have committed to him, and that's his life, that's

  316. his soul. He's able to keep it and he's

  317. able to keep it for us. He's able to keep it for us as

  318. well. The scripture says in Matthew,

  319. he says those who try to keep their life will lose it.

  320. If you try to keep this life we have down here mingling with the

  321. world, we don't lose that. But those who will lose their

  322. life for my sake, meaning Jesus Christ, the sake of Jesus

  323. Christ, they will find it. And that would be eternal life.

  324. They'll find it. So he says he's able to keep it

  325. against that day. And then in verse 13, he says

  326. hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from

  327. me in faith and love, which are in Christ Jesus.

  328. I just want to stop there for a second.

  329. He says hold fast. That means grab hold to hold

  330. tightly, hold near, stand on. But then he doesn't just say

  331. hold fast the sound words. Let's not miss the word that he

  332. put in between that. He said hold fast the pattern of

  333. sound words. Let's not change the gospel.

  334. Let's not minimize the gospel. Let's not water down the gospel.

  335. Let's not make the gospel something that it's not, don't

  336. add to or take away from it. The gospel is not a a get rich

  337. quick scheme. The gospel is not a motivational

  338. speech kind of a thing. It's not for motivational

  339. speaking. It's not a self help program.

  340. The gospel is not a prosperity project.

  341. It's not a way just to get money, he said.

  342. Hold the pattern the way that I gave it to you, Timothy, which

  343. is the way that I got it from Jesus Christ.

  344. Hold on to that. Keep that same pattern.

  345. Keep that word true. Be true to the word that I have

  346. given to you. Don't change it.

  347. Don't try to influence anybody by doing something different.

  348. Don't try to modernize it. Don't try to make it appealing

  349. to the new believer. No, Timothy, no.

  350. I know you're young and there's young people that's going to be

  351. trying to come to your church, but don't change the pattern of

  352. the gospel of those sound words. Keep those words the same.

  353. Keep the message, the message. Keep the main thing, the main

  354. thing, Timothy, and don't turn away from that.

  355. And when you give it to somebody else to teach it, give it to

  356. them the same way. Hold the pattern and that's what

  357. God is saying to us. Hold the pattern of sound

  358. teaching. We don't have to water nothing

  359. down. It's one of the things I love

  360. about Calvary Chapel. You can't really do that because

  361. you're going verse by verse, chapter by chapter.

  362. You can't roam around and try to twist and turn and and make

  363. things into your own message. No, you can't do it.

  364. What's here. That's what you got to teach.

  365. That's what you got to teach. Thank you, Jesus.

  366. Amen. Thank you, Jesus.

  367. So as we get ready to think about our Lord and Savior Jesus

  368. Christ, he said I only said what my father gave me to say.

  369. I only did what my father told me to do.

  370. He was true to the word of God. He kept the pattern of the

  371. sound. He never changed it.

  372. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever.

  373. He didn't change anything to try to gain popularity.

  374. When he knew people wanted to kill him for his message, he

  375. didn't change his message so it sounded less threatening.

  376. He didn't do that. He kept the pattern of sound

  377. words. When he knew that the Pharisees

  378. were trying to trick him up, He didn't do something to try to

  379. appease him. He spoke the gospel.

  380. He spoke the word of God. He didn't change it when the

  381. devil came to him, when he was in the wilderness, when he

  382. fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and the devil was trying to get

  383. him to change things up. He just simply preached the word

  384. every time. He didn't come up with his own

  385. examples or come up with his own way or something that might be a

  386. pleasing or appealing to Satan. He didn't do that.

  387. He kept the pattern of sound words.

  388. Let's keep the pattern of sound words.

  389. We endeavor to do that here in this house.

  390. For many years, Clark has been a a watchman over this house.

  391. To keep the message pure, the way that it comes out of this

  392. work, we have to do the same. We have to do the same.

  393. He was called to do it, we're called to do it and we have to

  394. continue to do. It you've been listening to

  395. Pastor Louis Harrell here on Living Waters of Grace, we're

  396. digging into all that Paul shared with Timothy in the books

  397. of First and Second Timothy. Timothy was commissioned to do

  398. the following fight, the good fight of faith, lay hold on

  399. eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed
