  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. This self love is actually. One of the self sins because it

  6. births so many. Other selfish.

  7. Things in our life, it gives birth to some of the other

  8. selfish things in our life. Jesus even said in Luke 9 and

  9. 23, He says if anyone desires to come after me, let him love

  10. himself. No, it doesn't say that, does

  11. he? He didn't say let him love

  12. himself, he said let him deny himself and take up his.

  13. Cross daily. Take a Scroll down the self help

  14. aisle at Barnes and Noble the next time you visit and you'll

  15. notice that this section has grown.

  16. Shelves are lined with book after book about how you can

  17. love yourself more. And while there certainly is an

  18. important aspect to self esteem and self love, it can quickly

  19. spiral into self worship. As we heard a moment ago from

  20. Pastor Lewis. Jesus has called us to deny self

  21. and to pick up our crosses daily in order to bring God glory.

  22. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the book of Second Timothy chapter 3

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  23. with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.

  24. Father once again. As we prepare, Lord to.

  25. Open up your word. As we prepare to study your

  26. truth. We once again ask.

  27. For your Holy Spirit Lord too. Be manifested today and to.

  28. Teach us you are the teacher, Lord, your Holy Spirit teaches.

  29. Us and leads us into all. Truth.

  30. It reveals all truth. You reveal all truth, Lord.

  31. Father, you don't need me. To be here, Lord, your word says

  32. you use the foolish. Things to confound the the wise

  33. things, Lord. Of this world.

  34. And I definitely qualify as one of the foolish things.

  35. But Father, you don't need me. You don't need a vessel.

  36. You. Choose to use a vessel Lord you.

  37. Spoke to Moses. Through a burning Bush you spoke

  38. to. Balaam by a mule, a donkey Lord.

  39. You certainly don't use. You certainly don't need me.

  40. So, Father? I asked.

  41. That you would open your mouth, Lord, and speak to.

  42. All of us. Help us to understand what it is

  43. that you're saying to us in these times and as we.

  44. Go through these perilous times, Lord, as we.

  45. Are going through this. Chapter I pray.

  46. That you would enlighten us and most of our Father.

  47. I pray that someone's eyes will be open, that someone's heart.

  48. Would be touched. And let.

  49. This be the last day, Lord. That they would not know their

  50. eternity. Let this be the last day, Lord

  51. that they. Walk as one of the children of

  52. disobedience. The last day that they.

  53. Live in darkness and walk in their sins and.

  54. Trespasses that they be. Dead in their sins and.

  55. Trespasses. Let this be the last day.

  56. But Father, I pray that you would.

  57. Bring life to someone today, Lord, that you would bring

  58. salvation to someone today, that someone's life will be totally

  59. changed. Today for this year.

  60. Going into this year. Lord.

  61. And that you would change our. Lives, Lord, who are believers?

  62. Even today, Lord, as we become more and more.

  63. Like you let this year, Lord, that we become.

  64. More and more like. You so we ask these.

  65. Things in the name of our Savior and our Lord in Jesus holy name,

  66. matchless name, we. Pray that.

  67. Everyone say Amen, Amen. So we are here.

  68. In chapter 3, Second Timothy, chapter 3 and we have been

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  69. titled. This.

  70. Perilous time. This is on the heels of coming

  71. off of. Chapter 2, where Paul has.

  72. Prepared Timothy prepared Timothy for what's going on or

  73. what will be going on today in these last times so Paul is

  74. almost like in this chapter he becomes.

  75. Like a prophet, he gives a prophecy.

  76. Of what's to come and what will be happening in the.

  77. Last days, so let's just start to.

  78. Go in through the Scripture. I don't know how far we're going

  79. to get because I don't want to rush through this.

  80. We're only going to do 99 verses.

  81. I intend to do 9 verses, but I don't want to rush it because

  82. there's so much in it that I want it impart.

  83. But if we don't, if we don't get through it all the day, we'll do

  84. it next week and then after. That we have pastor.

  85. Clark coming back in to teach us, but I I do want to take my

  86. time as we go through. This is that OK?

  87. We did. OK.

  88. Thank you. Praise God so chapter 3 verse.

  89. One and it says but know this that in the.

  90. Last days perilous. Times will come, so he says, in

  91. the last days. So what you know so?

  92. What are What are these last days?

  93. What are these last? Days.

  94. I mean, is there going to be anything different happening in

  95. these? Last days that.

  96. Or is there a different attitude?

  97. About these last days. Or is there something?

  98. Different about these last. Days and during the time that

  99. Paul. Was there or that the apostles

  100. will walk the earth the last days is.

  101. Really a reference that period from the the ministry of Jesus

  102. Christ from the time he came and he.

  103. Walked the earth. And he did ministry and then he.

  104. Was crucified, He was. Buried, And he rose again, and

  105. he ascended into heaven. To be at the right.

  106. To be at the right. Hand of the Father.

  107. So from that time, from that ascension until his return is.

  108. Really considered the last days. So from that time for we were.

  109. In the last days. And we are in the last days and

  110. as we. Go through this.

  111. I think you'll see evidence of that, even Paul.

  112. Who spoke about this hundreds of years ago?

  113. Gives us some very chilling information, so accurate about

  114. what will happen in these last days.

  115. Now these last days are. Also referred to.

  116. As last times according to Jude chapter 1 and 18 First Peter

    Jude 1 chapter mention

  117. 120. It's referred to as the last.

  118. Hour in first John 2 and 18. It's also referred to.

  119. As the end of ages in 1st Corinthians 10 and 11.

  120. But what we must remember? Is that?

  121. This is God's time we're talking about.

  122. So because we say last. Days that doesn't mean that you

  123. know, we still don't know. We still don't know when Christ

  124. is coming back. We have no idea.

  125. And neither did, Neither did Paul.

  126. So when we say. The last days that.

  127. Doesn't mean that OK like the last.

  128. Few days it's. It's almost like, you know, like

  129. these are my last few days of speaking for this particular.

  130. Cycle right, because Pastor Clark will be here in about two

  131. weeks. We're not talking about that

  132. what we're talking about. Is that these are the last.

  133. Days and we must understand that for.

  134. God a day. Is as 1000 years and 1000 years.

  135. Is as a day. So when you think about.

  136. Jesus. Being around has only been two,

  137. you know, 2000 years. So if you talk.

  138. About 2000 years and God's economy of things, it's really

  139. only been two days. It's only been two days.

  140. So in the last days and we are in these last.

  141. Days, but what he says is that. Perilous times will come, and

  142. that's a very interesting word, that he.

  143. Uses, he says. Perilous times.

  144. Perilous means, wicked means difficult.

  145. It means hard times, troublesome times, furious times.

  146. And get this. Fierce.

  147. Times dangerous, hazardous time, I mean, and this is what it will

  148. be in those. Last days.

  149. I mean it, it's going to be a time of lawlessness and

  150. godlessness, but also it's going to be even.

  151. Worse for the believers. Because most.

  152. Of that hatred that. Energy will be against believers

  153. will be against believers. So it's times of.

  154. Stress, particularly for us and what Paul exhorted.

  155. Timothy to do as we mentioned earlier back in chapter 2, when

  156. he encouraged him to endure. Hardship.

  157. He told him to remember that Jesus.

  158. He told him remember that. Jesus, that Jesus is the Christ.

  159. He is the Messiah and we hold on to that and he also told us or

  160. encouraged. Us to rightly divide the word.

  161. And to keep or to keep the pattern of sound doctrine, these

  162. are the things that he prepared Timothy for in in chapter 2.

  163. And it's because of what's coming in these last days.

  164. So this word perilous, fierce. Is actually the same way.

  165. It's interesting it's the same word.

  166. That was used. Back in Matthew Back in Matthew

  167. and chapter 8 when? They talked about the story.

  168. Of the of the demoniac and the two demoniacs when Jesus went

  169. over. To Gardara.

  170. And he get out of the boat. And these two demoniacs

  171. approached him, and they were described as being exceedingly

  172. fierce. They were described as being

  173. exceedingly fierce. They were untamed men, wild men,

  174. men with no boundaries. I mean just fierce men.

  175. No one could be around them. And he used that same term for

  176. these days. Perilous days, Perilous times.

  177. And we see that also back in First Timothy.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  178. Chapter 4. And verse one very interesting

  179. that Paul. Uses a very.

  180. Similar term you know, because it's when he says demoniac when

  181. I when I told you that it almost like it was the same word that.

  182. Described what was. Mentioned in in Gardeira in

  183. Matthew when he talked about the demoniacs being exceedingly

  184. fierce. They were of a demonic spirit.

  185. They were influenced by a demonic spirit and he mentions

  186. that over here in first. Timothy, Chapter 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  187. Almost the same thing when he says now the.

  188. Spirit expressly says. That in the latter times, some

  189. will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits

  190. and doctrines of demons. So there's a connection there.

  191. There's this demonic influence is being inferenced here, that

  192. there's a demonic influence that's going to be happening in

  193. these. Last days or?

  194. I should say increasing demonic influence because we're already

  195. seeing that in many cases going on right now.

  196. So then he goes to verse 2 and he says for men will be lovers

  197. of themselves. I'm going to read through these

  198. and then I'm going to go back. Because this.

  199. Is where I really want to take my time.

  200. If you don't mind back in these particular verse from verse 2 to

  201. verse. 5 is really where? Paul gets into kind of the.

  202. Meat of this character of what? What?

  203. The character of the last days What?

  204. Will mankind be like so he says here in verse 2?

  205. He says for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,

  206. boasters. Prowl.

  207. Blasphemers. Disobedient to parents,

  208. unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving slanderers without

  209. self-control, brutal despisers. Of good traitors.

  210. Headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of

  211. God. I want to stop.

  212. There because I. Just want to go.

  213. Through these. And take my time with this now

  214. again. This is the character that Paul

  215. is. Describing here.

  216. This is the character of the false.

  217. Teachers and unbelievers. Of the last days, this is the

  218. character. He's saying this is what it's

  219. going to. Look like.

  220. And he starts. Off with the issue of love.

  221. God is love. So you know what?

  222. What one of the? Ways.

  223. That rebellion takes shape is when it attacks.

  224. The love of God. It's one of the ways rebellion

  225. takes shape. So he starts off with these

  226. these. Lovers and remember when.

  227. Jesus was asked. What is the greatest

  228. commandment? He said that you love the Lord

  229. God with all your. Mind all your heart and all your

  230. soul. In other words, totally love the

  231. Lord your God. Doesn't say love yourself, it

  232. says. Love the Lord your.

  233. God and to love your neighbors as.

  234. Yourself is a second. So what Paul is doing here, he

  235. is showing how the rebellion of that time will even go against.

  236. The love that God. Commanded for us, so the first

  237. one, he says. They will be.

  238. Lovers of themselves, lovers of themselves.

  239. That's the pride. That totally.

  240. Right there goes against the word of God, the Word.

  241. Of God doesn't tell us to be lovers of ourselves, it tells us

  242. to be. Lovers of him.

  243. And lovers of others, that's how we worship.

  244. Him, by loving him. He says if you.

  245. Love me, you'll obey me, you'll keep my commandments.

  246. This is not, it's. Dangerous to love yourself

  247. because when you start to love yourself to this point, you

  248. begin to make. Idols of yourself, you.

  249. Become a. God of yourself so.

  250. He goes on here so that. This talks about pride.

  251. And and I just want to read something to you when we talk.

  252. About this self love, This self love.

  253. Is the overarching sin. Of all the other

  254. characteristics, so this. Is like the originator or where

  255. it all comes from most of the sins and it's already been

  256. documented that. Pride is usually at the base.

  257. Of almost all sins. Pride is at the base of that.

  258. Almost every sin that we commit when you scratch.

  259. Off all the surfaces, you scratch off all the layers.

  260. What's at the bottom of it is. Usually pride.

  261. It's usually pride. It's self love.

  262. And it is the overarching sin of.

  263. All of these other characteristics.

  264. That's going to be listed. It's an emphasis on self or

  265. loving self more or instead of loving God.

  266. It's a form of humanism to some degree, and it's.

  267. Also self idolatry. And as and it's putting.

  268. Self before God. And anything that we.

  269. Put before God. Is an idol.

  270. Whether it's our self, whether it's our.

  271. Children, our job. Our our our hobbies.

  272. Whatever it. Is that we put before God is.

  273. An idol, one of my favorite. Authors.

  274. And I just recently got a book by one of our.

  275. Sisters here, that. Blessed me with the book from

  276. this. Author AW Tozer.

  277. One of my favorite authors. This is the quote that he had

  278. concerning the self sins. He said.

  279. To be specific, the self sins are these self righteousness,

  280. self pity, self-confidence, self-sufficiency which is part

  281. of humanism, self admiration, self love and a host.

  282. Of others. Like them?

  283. End Quote. So this self love.

  284. Is actually one of the self sins because it.

  285. Births. So many other selfish things in

  286. our life. It gives birth to some of the

  287. other selfish things in our life.

  288. Jesus even said in Luke 9 and 23 He says if anyone desires to

  289. come after me, let him love himself.

  290. No, he doesn't say that, does he?

  291. He didn't say let him love himself.

  292. He said let him deny himself and take up his.

  293. Cross daily take up his cross daily take up that part of us,

  294. that self sacrificial part of us, that part of us that's

  295. supposed to give ourselves as a as a as a.

  296. Sacrifice every single. Day we do this.

  297. We die to. Ourself take up our cross daily.

  298. And follow me. And follow me.

  299. And then in Philippians 2 and 3. Says.

  300. Let nothing be done. Through selfish.

  301. Ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let him esteem

  302. others better than himself. Verse 4 says let each.

  303. Of you look not only on his own interests, but also for the

  304. interests of others, that is almost impossible to do in our

  305. own strength. We're not.

  306. Built that way. To put somebody else's interest

  307. before our own. We're just not built that way.

  308. None of us are. None of us are.

  309. We don't go. To a job interview and begin to

  310. build up the person that we're in competition for that job for.

  311. We don't go into the interview and talk about the person that's

  312. that's going to be interviewing after us and build that person

  313. up. We don't do that.

  314. We go in and talk. About ourselves.

  315. But that's what happens. With self love it's.

  316. Always putting the interests. Of ourselves.

  317. Before the interests of others. But Paul says here.

  318. Let each of you. Look on not only, he says.

  319. Not only he's not saying that you never look on your own

  320. interests, but he says don't look only on your interests.

  321. But also. On the entrance.

  322. On the entrance. Of others with this self love,

  323. this pride, it's. It's love instead of worshipping

  324. and loving God OK when we love ourselves instead of worshipping

  325. and loving. God, what they do is that.

  326. They love themselves and make gods of themselves and become

  327. users. Of people for their.

  328. Benefit. And that's one of the dangers of

  329. loving self, because we begin to instead of loving people.

  330. We use people. We use people.

  331. For our own benefit, the next one he talks.

  332. About he talks about the lovers of.

  333. Money lovers of money and when you love money it it be you

  334. become covetous because you want what money can give you and

  335. that's a. Part of self love.

  336. Become lovers of money. You go out and go get the things

  337. that give you pleasure, the things that.

  338. Feel your lusts. And instead of using things like

  339. money, which is. Provided by God to.

  340. Provide for our own needs instead of using them for that,

  341. or use them to. Glorify God or use.

  342. Them using money to bless other people instead of using it that

  343. way. We love money and make idols out

  344. of the money and the things and often things.

  345. But we use people instead of using money.

  346. We instead use people instead of loving people.

  347. So it's a misplaced. Love there.

  348. It's a misplaced love. We should.

  349. Be loving others, but instead we love things and we use others.

  350. We get it backwards there, we get it backwards there.

  351. And what Paul is saying that in these last days people will

  352. misplace. Their love.

  353. They'll love themselves and things instead of loving God and

  354. loving others and using things for God's.

  355. Glory. The next one, he.

  356. Says is boasters. She talks about these boasters.

  357. Boasters, this is. Vaunting and praising themselves

  358. if we are to. Boast the The Bible tells us

  359. that if we do boast, we are. We we should boast in the Lord

  360. and not in ourselves. The boasters are people who.

  361. Like to make I statements, I statements I did this.

  362. I did that. I have this or I have that.

  363. I have this ability or I have that.

  364. Ability I'm I'm this and I'm that.

  365. It's a lot of. I statements enjoy telling you

  366. things that they've done to help somebody else or things that

  367. they have done that promotes themselves.

  368. It's vaunting. It's.

  369. Prideful. And these things come directly.

  370. This boasting comes directly from Satan himself.

  371. If you look back in Isaiah chapter 14, verses 13 and 14,

    Isaiah 14:13

  372. I'm just read it to you. You don't have to turn there,

  373. but it says. For you.

  374. Have said in your. Heart I.

  375. Will ascend into heaven. I.

  376. Will exalt my throne above the. Stars of God I.

  377. Will sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest

  378. sides of the north. I will ascend above the.

  379. Heights of the clouds I will be. Like the most high.

  380. All these I statements I will, I will, I will.

  381. I can, I can. I did.

  382. I did. Beware of these I.

  383. Statement. These are people.

  384. Who are full of pride, full of pride.

  385. Psalm 32 and two says this, My soul shall make its boast in the

  386. Lord, and the humble shall. Hear of it and be glad.

  387. And I just also want to read for you, Jeremiah.

  388. This is one of. My favorite verses actually.

  389. When it talks about boasting and talks about who?

  390. We should boast or how we should.

  391. Boast, but in Jeremiah 9 and 23. He says thus says the Lord.

  392. Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty

  393. man glory in his might. Let not the rich man glory in

  394. his riches. But let him who?

  395. Glories or let. Him who boasts, let him boast in

  396. this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord,

  397. exercising loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in

  398. the. Earth for these.

  399. Things in these things. I delight, says the Lord, if we

  400. are to. Love somebody.

  401. We're to boast. If we're to glory in anything,

  402. it should be in the Lord, because no matter what.

  403. It is that we. Have anything of any

  404. significance? Anything that's any.

  405. Good. It comes from him.

  406. We don't have anything of our own anything.

  407. It all comes from him. So where are we able to boast in

  408. Second Corinthians 10/17? It says but he who glories or he

  409. who boast. Let them boast in the.

  410. Lord. And then he and then he talks.

  411. About this, this pride, this pride, these.

  412. The next one is proud. These people are proud, they're

  413. arrogant of themselves. They are wise in their own

  414. hearts, and pride actually leads to rebellion against God.

  415. All the time. Pride.

  416. Leads to rebellion against God and and pride you know what

  417. pride mostly comes in at is in our reluctance or in our neglect

  418. to pray because when things are going well we.

  419. Feel like we got it, We got it. You know I'm Lord.

  420. I got this now. I don't need you, man.

  421. Not for this. So we don't pray.

  422. We stop praying. Praying is one of the most
