  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis

  2. Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland

  3. County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. Verse 7 says for a Bishop. Must be blameless.

  6. As a steward of God, if we're stewards of.

  7. God, then we must understand that we don't own anything.

  8. Anything that we have is given to us or entrusted to us.

  9. To watch over to. Manage It is not that we own it.

  10. We don't own a ministry. We don't have our own people.

  11. The congregation belongs to the Lord.

  12. Jesus is head of the church. We all answer to him, and that's

  13. why the. Word of God is the authority.

  14. Have you ever had keys to your workplace before?

  15. That can be a big responsibility.

  16. A lot of places don't just hand over keys to anyone.

  17. They give them to those they know they can trust.

  18. When you're given the keys to your workplace, you know that

  19. it's not so that you could do whatever you want, but so that

  20. you could carry out the business of your employer.

  21. In his message today, Pastor Lewis shares with you that when

  22. God gives you responsibility in the body of Christ, it's for the

  23. purpose of doing his work. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the

  24. book of Titus, chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters

  25. of Grace. Now this.

  26. Whole word, The Senate order. That whole word.

  27. Really is a medical term. And it's a term that really

  28. deals or refers to. Setting a bone.

  29. Setting a bone. Setting something that is out of

  30. place in your body? Some orthopedic problem that you

  31. may have. That's out of place, Paul says.

  32. It's it's a setting in order when those things are out of

  33. order if we have a limb. That's out of order.

  34. If we have anything that's not lined up right, which.

  35. Is why a lot of people will go. You know to the.

  36. Specialist to. Line them up and.

  37. Get their bodies. Right, because things are out of

  38. order. And when they're not in order,

  39. it causes pain, it causes discomfort.

  40. It causes. Overcompensation of other.

  41. Limbs or other areas of your body.

  42. Making just cause of dysfunction in your system when things are

  43. out of order. Sometimes a bone out of order

  44. causes problems and if the body or limb is out of.

  45. Order it will let. You know.

  46. Because there is. You know that the body system is

  47. is chaotic and it just doesn't function properly well.

  48. The church is exact. Same way when things are out of.

  49. Order if there. Is no order in the.

  50. Church there is. Problems.

  51. It doesn't function properly. It doesn't function properly.

  52. Then there has to be overcompensation because

  53. somebody is doing too much, because it's not enough.

  54. This is lacking. So somebody feels they got to go

  55. over and do that, and then that's lacking.

  56. So somebody for the overcompensation.

  57. So people are being burned out. People are being, you know, not

  58. used. Properly.

  59. Or people are getting upset. I mean, when the church is is

  60. not in order, things happen in the church.

  61. But when it's set in order, when leadership is set in order and

  62. things are in order in the church, things go a lot more

  63. smoothly. There's not as much affliction,

  64. there's not as much chaos, there's not division and the

  65. kind of things that can happen when things are.

  66. Out of order. And the same thing happens in

  67. our own home if things are out of order at home.

  68. It's crazy. It's crazy.

  69. But when things are in order at home, things run a lot more

  70. smoothly. And that's exactly.

  71. What, Paul? Is telling Titus put things in

  72. order first thing to do? Is to.

  73. Put things in. Order So what?

  74. Did he do? He commanded him to put.

  75. Elders approved elders. In every church.

  76. So in verse 6. It talks about what the the

  77. attributes. Are of these men who are to be

  78. put in place and he says if a man is blameless, the first

  79. thing he addresses is the man's home ministry.

  80. He says if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having

  81. faithful children, not accused of dissipation or

  82. insubordination. He said if a man is going to be

  83. an elder in the church. He first of all.

  84. Needs to have his home ministry taken care of.

  85. He needs to be the man. He He reminds us again of what

  86. he told Timothy. You know he needs to be a man, a

  87. man, a husband of one wife. And we talked about.

  88. What that meant before. He can't have 3 or 4 living

  89. wives, you know? You know you can't.

  90. We're to talk about just having one wife at a time.

  91. You marry one divorcer, marry another divorcer.

  92. He's not talking about that either.

  93. You know that's not one wife, OK, One wife.

  94. Is if you if a leader is married.

  95. And if the wife. Dies.

  96. He can remarry, OK, but not just, you know, divorce and

  97. divorce and divorce and divorce. And just to you know, I don't

  98. like her. So she's no longer going to be

  99. my wife. I'm going to take this one now.

  100. Can't do it. That's not what that's not what

  101. the Lord intends. It's not what the Lord intends,

  102. but it's one wife, husband of one wife.

  103. He said having children. Faithful.

  104. Children. That means children.

  105. Who are are faithful? These are These are.

  106. Children who you can rely on Children you can depend on.

  107. Children who would. You know who?

  108. Who are good examples to some degree and that's why a lot of.

  109. People call them pre. K's, you know, a lot of kids

  110. don't like to. Be called pre-K.

  111. 'S because that means that they're kind of out there.

  112. People can see. Their their lives and it's true

  113. people who are. Raised in the church if they

  114. have. Children, their kids.

  115. Are looked upon me and you know they want they they should be.

  116. They're supposed to be an example.

  117. It's supposed to be an example. Now we're only talking about the

  118. kids who live in the home. We're not talking about kids who

  119. don't live in the home. You don't.

  120. No control. Over kids that are.

  121. Grown adults and they're doing their own thing, making their

  122. own decisions. That's not what he's talking

  123. about. He's talking about the kids who

  124. are living in your home. Those kids should be kids who

  125. are faithful. And not accused of dissipation

  126. or insubordination. They should be.

  127. Kids who will. Respond to authority and not be

  128. those who are. Rebellious to authority.

  129. He said. And basically we're saying is if

  130. a man can't take care of his own home, then how's he going to be

  131. able to? Watch over a church How's.

  132. He going to be able to watch. Over a church.

  133. And verse 7 says for a Bishop must be blameless as a steward.

  134. Of God if we're stewards of. God, then we must understand

  135. that we don't own anything. Anything that we have is given

  136. to us or entrusted to us. To watch over to.

  137. Manage It is not that we own it. We don't own a ministry.

  138. We don't have our own people. The congregation belongs to the

  139. Lord. Jesus is head of the church.

  140. We all answer to him, and that's why the word of.

  141. God is the authority. Because we answer to him, we

  142. don't answer to just a man. Because a man can tell us to do

  143. anything we answer. To the Lord Jesus.

  144. Christ according to this word, and that's why it's really

  145. important to be in a Bible believing, Bible teaching

  146. church. Somebody who really upholds the

  147. word of God and. That being the authority, that

  148. being the. Authority.

  149. So a Bishop. Must be a steward.

  150. Now a steward must be faithful. That is a.

  151. Requirement of a. Steward.

  152. A steward. Must be faithful.

  153. First Corinthians chapter 4 verse one and two says let a man

    1 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  154. so consider us. As servants of Christ.

  155. And stewards of the mysteries of God, moreover.

  156. It is. Required in stewards that one be

  157. found faithful, so it's a requirement to be.

  158. Faithful. It's not perfect.

  159. We're not going to be perfect, but we should be faithful.

  160. We should be reliable. We should be reliable.

  161. We should at least do what we say.

  162. We're going to do and the things that.

  163. We are to do. We should be.

  164. Counted upon to do it not wondering if well.

  165. We're supposed to have. Bible study here, but I don't

  166. know if the pastor's going to show up or not, you know?

  167. We're supposed to have a. Wedding but I don't know if he's

  168. going to show up and do the wedding or not.

  169. You know, has to be reliable. Has to be somebody who's

  170. reliable and then he goes on. He says that he can Now these

  171. are the not the things that he should not be He should not be

  172. self willed. He should not be quick tempered.

  173. He should not be given to wine. He should not be violent.

  174. Nobody wants a. Pastor that's out there.

  175. Or elder that's out there in the, you know, out there in the

  176. streets fighting all the time, you know, fisticuffs, somebody

  177. gets into an argument with him. Come on, we can take this

  178. outside. I don't think y'all want to hear

  179. that out of your pastor. You know, you know, we're always

  180. brawling you. Know what I mean?

  181. Getting into arguments with you all the time.

  182. Word debates and, you know, always arguing and just, you

  183. know, I got to be right. Because it's self willed.

  184. You know, I mean, that's not a good.

  185. Attribute for a pastor. So we should not be violent,

  186. should not be greedy for money. You know, it's very dangerous

  187. for a pastor who is greedy for money in the church.

  188. Because if he's greedy for money, then now you got to watch

  189. over the offerings and make. Sure that that's always.

  190. Being used. For what it should.

  191. Be used for and all things are accounted for financially.

  192. If he's greedy for money, he's going to always be looking for

  193. schemes to try to make more money and that maybe, you know,

  194. even farming out himself for more speaking engagement

  195. somewhere so he can make money doing that.

  196. And then, you know, you're here on Sunday, left without, you

  197. know, your pastor speaking to to you on Sundays.

  198. You know what I mean? So you know you should not be

  199. greedy for money. Verse 8 says he.

  200. Should be hospitable now these are things that a pastor.

  201. Should be we just? Mentioned 5 things that he

  202. shouldn't be, but these are things that he should be and

  203. it's about 6 of them. He says he should be hospitable.

  204. He should be the. Lover of what?

  205. Is good and that lover of. What is good?

  206. Is actually not. Just what is good?

  207. In terms of things. But also good people.

  208. OK, an elder, a leader in. The church should be.

  209. Someone who associates with. Believers who are believers who

  210. were good and. That doesn't mean that he never

  211. associates with unbelievers. It's not what we're saying.

  212. What we're saying is though. He should associate with good

  213. people. You know, because.

  214. The Bible. Tells us in First Corinthians

  215. what 1533 that evil communications corrupt good

  216. manners, and then in Proverbs 1320 says that you.

  217. Walk with the wise. You'll be wise.

  218. But you know the companions and fools.

  219. Will be destroyed, so. We have to make sure that we.

  220. Associate with. Good people.

  221. I mean that, you know. All of us should.

  222. Should make sure. That we're associated with good

  223. people because our good habits. Can be corrupted if we're

  224. constantly exposing ourselves to people who don't.

  225. Believe what we believe. And not walking out what we or

  226. trying to walk. Out what we believe so lover of

  227. what is good. Sober minded, Clear minded.

  228. Just righteous, upright. Mean living uprightly, living

  229. justly, holy, being separated unto God, self-control, having

  230. that self-control again. And that's.

  231. Really very similar to the attribute.

  232. Which talks about being sober minded, but the difference here

  233. is that he should be under self-control.

  234. That means that he's not just out trying to.

  235. Please his. Flesh.

  236. And he's always giving into his flesh.

  237. He doesn't have no. Control over his flesh.

  238. He doesn't have no. Self-control.

  239. No self. Constraint to not do things that

  240. are disorderly but pleasing the flesh.

  241. Talk a little bit a little bit more about that.

  242. And then verse 9 says beholding. Fast, the faithful Word.

  243. As he has been taught, that means the faithful word that we

  244. have been taught. Through the scriptures we've

  245. been taught. It through the scriptures and we

  246. hold. That fast.

  247. Not some man made. Theory about what the scriptures

  248. say. Or some man made.

  249. Theory about. Some other doctrine.

  250. That they are. Putting in place of the Bible,

  251. that should not be. We should hold fast the faithful

  252. word as He has. Been taught and the reason why.

  253. Is so that. He may be able by sound doctrine

  254. both to resort and that means to encourage or to.

  255. Warn OK to courage. Or to warn and convict.

  256. That means the conviction of error.

  257. To convict someone of error that someone is.

  258. Able to see. And someone able to.

  259. Come to the place by. Hearing sound doctrine, they're

  260. able to come to the. Place that they realize.

  261. That what they're doing or what they're saying is in error.

  262. They're convicted of it. OK, so they're convicted.

  263. Those who? Contradict like those who are

  264. going against it. And that's exactly.

  265. What the word of God does for. Us, you know, we really don't

  266. have to. It's not the power that any one

  267. of us has in US that causes someone to see that they're in

  268. error. It's the word of God all you got

  269. to do. Is just bring the word.

  270. Of God and share look. This is what you said and this

  271. is what the. Word of God says.

  272. They can see themselves that they're in error.

  273. I don't have to do anything to try to convince them that

  274. they're in error. I don't have to, you know, go

  275. through any kind of, you know, mental gymnastics.

  276. Or try to put something logical together.

  277. The word of God tells us. It shows us.

  278. And that's why when we come to share with someone, if you feel

  279. that someone has taught something that is not accurate,

  280. bring your Bible. We sit down and the word of God.

  281. Will be the authority. Because if you don't bring the

  282. word of God, then that means I'm either taking your word or

  283. you're taking my word. That ain't going to work.

  284. It's not about. Who's right or who's wrong?

  285. It's about what's right. And what's wrong according to

  286. the word of God? Amen.

  287. Amen. Then we go on.

  288. And he said in verse 10, he says now for there are many

  289. insubordinate, insubordinate, unruly.

  290. People he's. Talking about the false teachers

  291. that are in Crete now that he sent Titus back to deal with,

  292. you know. Titus had a really tough job.

  293. I mean, because he's going into an area that's really dangerous.

  294. He's going into an. Area where people are, they

  295. don't really, they don't take real.

  296. Kindly to hearing new things and all of us when we go and share.

  297. The Gospel with people. We are sharing the gospel with

  298. some people who don't like to hear new things.

  299. They don't want to hear things. About Jesus Christ.

  300. And we're sharing the gospel with these people and tell them

  301. I'm telling you I have been cussed.

  302. Out. On the streets, sharing the.

  303. Gospel of Jesus Christ because they get just.

  304. That angry? So it's really a it's a

  305. dangerous. Job, to some degree of what Paul

  306. was asking him to go in and do, this is a very immoral place.

  307. And he said, and these people were insubordinate.

  308. That means that they do not conform.

  309. To rules they don't. Conform to ruliness or or.

  310. They don't conform to authority. Rather, it's the authority of

  311. church leaders or the authority of the Word of God.

  312. They're insubordinate. They're both.

  313. Idle talkers and deceivers, these are people.

  314. Who are idle talk. That means their talk is empty.

  315. I mean, they share all these things and they get up and they

  316. talk in front of these people when they share their little

  317. doctrines, but they're empty. They can't 'cause life change

  318. because there's no power in it, there's no anointing in it.

  319. It may sound good, it may sound logical, it may stimulate the

  320. flesh, but there's no. Power in it.

  321. There's nothing that changes. The heart.

  322. And we need things that we need to.

  323. Hear the word of God, because it's the Word.

  324. Of God that changes our hearts when we.

  325. Got saved it. Wasn't someone's logic or

  326. someone's clever. Speech that got us saved.

  327. It was the true. And the word of.

  328. God that got us saved, that caused us to see the fact that

  329. we are. Sinners and we need.

  330. A savior. It's the word of God that

  331. reveals that. But when you.

  332. Have a false teacher. He's not teaching that what they

  333. teach is empty in. Fact, Jude said.

  334. They're like. Wells with no water, and they're

  335. like clouds that have no water. Well, A.

  336. Cloud that has no water you can't bring forth.

  337. Life, the whole idea of a. Cloud in the rain is because it

  338. brings life on the earth, it gives us vegetation and it gives

  339. us things that we can eat and survive on and that's.

  340. What the word of God has water it it has it's life.

  341. Giving. It's life giving.

  342. Not only life giving, but it's life sustaining.

  343. Because it can give. Us everlasting, it takes us into

  344. everlasting life, so he said. And they're deceivers.

  345. And they're deceivers because? They themselves are deceived.

  346. They themselves are deceived. Remember what it said over in

  347. Second Timothy, over in Second Timothy chapter 3 and verse 12.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  348. It said yes. And all who desire to live godly

  349. in Christ. Jesus.

  350. Will suffer persecution 13 but evil men and.

  351. Impostors will grow. Worse and worse, deceiving and

  352. being deceived and the reason why they are deceiving.

  353. Is because they are deceived. By Satan.

  354. Satan is using them to deceive. Others and that's.

  355. Why They're being deceived. So then it goes on.

  356. It says that. These are those.

  357. Of the circumcision that means those who are.

  358. The Jewish people who are. Teaching them to come under

  359. Jewish bondage. Whose mouths must?

  360. Be stopped who subvert whole. Households teaching them things

  361. which they ought not now remember back in those.

  362. Days the church. Was not a church building that

  363. we have right now. The churches was in homes.

  364. So these people were going into homes and they were teaching all

  365. these strange doctrine. They were.

  366. Trying to take over. You know, the Bible studies and

  367. they were trying to take over the meetings in these homes and

  368. and that's why even we here, you know who have Bible studies and

  369. I thank God that we have. Really a good accountable spirit

  370. filled teachers. That are teaching the word of

  371. God and we go to the homes and we hear somebody teaching we're

  372. going to hear. The true.

  373. Word of God is coming right out of this.

  374. I thank God for that. But we must be.

  375. Careful that visitors. Who will come there?

  376. That we don't know. That we'll find out about your

  377. Bible studies. Will try to come in, sit down

  378. and. Eventually, try to take over

  379. your Bible study. And try to put in this poison.

  380. Little by little, try. To introduce this poison and

  381. try. To corrupt the word of God, we

  382. have to be careful with that. And be on the.

  383. Watch out for that. And this is what Paul is saying

  384. to. Titus, these people we're.

  385. Putting them in bondage, trying to make these gentile.

  386. Believers, go back. Into the bondage under the law.

  387. And they don't have to keep the law.

  388. They're gentiles. They don't have to keep the law,

  389. they don't have to be circumcised in order to be

  390. saved. But this is what they were.

  391. Teaching whose mouths must. Be stopped who subvert whole.

  392. Households teaching things which they are not for the sake of

  393. dishonest gain, so they're doing these things out of the

  394. selfishness of their own hearts. They're doing it because.

  395. They want something. It's not real clear exactly what

  396. that dishonest gain was. I don't.

  397. Know if that dishonest gain was financial.

  398. Usually when the Bible talks about dishonest gain,

  399. greediness, it usually is talking about.

  400. It usually is. Talking about financial money

  401. but dishonest gang can also be. Just trying to get their trust,

  402. Dishonestly trying. To, you know, get them to

  403. convert to something that is not true dishonestly, you know, So

  404. we don't know exactly what they mean when they say dishonest

  405. gang. And then verse 13 it says here

  406. one of them, a prophet of their own, said Christians must.

  407. Are always liars, evil beasts, lazy?

  408. Glutton and Paul said in 13 this testimony.

  409. Is true. Now that's really wild.

  410. Now Accretion is talking about his own.

  411. People and he said. Look man, my people are messed

  412. up. My people are messed up.

  413. He didn't just. Say they're liars, he said.

  414. They always. Lying in.

  415. Fact they have a. Word in the Mediterranean if

  416. someone lies. They'll say that they're.

  417. Cretinizing. That's how much they associate

  418. lying with the Cretians. They said, oh, he.

  419. Just cretinized. He's lying.

  420. That's how bad it is. And he?

  421. Said they're not just. Evil, he said.

  422. They're not just beasts, he said.

  423. They're evil. Beasts.

  424. They're primal animals. They live their.

  425. Lives totally doing nothing but, you know, supporting and

  426. satisfying their flesh. If they want to eat.

  427. They're just going to go kill something.

  428. That's what an animal do. An evil beast just get just go

  429. kill someone. I don't.

  430. Care what he kills, kills anything, he'll kill his own.

  431. To eat evil beast they only want.

  432. To do is eat and mate. However their body drives them,

  433. that's all they do. And you know, it's funny

  434. sometimes when we see these commercials and we see.

  435. These little kids. You know, behind these window

  436. panes and and we see these animals.

  437. Out there these big. Tigers and big lions and, you

  438. know, these big cats and, and, and they're coming up to the.

  439. Glass Where the kid? Is and then and it looks like

  440. they're playing with the kid. They're not playing with that

  441. kid. They're animals.

  442. Trying to find a way to get over to that kid so we.

  443. Can eat him. Because that's what they do.

  444. They're. Driven by that and Paul is

  445. saying that these. People are evil beasts.

  446. They're just driven by. Their flesh driven by their

  447. flesh. And he said they're lazy

  448. gluttons and the Bible just talk about glutton.

  449. And this gluttony really means like excess.

  450. This is somebody who is constantly about excess.

  451. You know, everything that they do, whether it's eating and here

  452. and here they are talking about eating for the most part.

  453. But gluttony can also be anything, you know, being greedy

  454. for anything, greedy for money, greedy.

  455. For power. Greedy for fame, greedy for

  456. position, greedy for anything can be given to gluttony.

  457. Sexually greedy. You know this insatiable lust or

  458. whatnot. Gluttony.

  459. Always in excess wine. In excess of wine, They're just

  460. the gluttons. And he said they are just.

  461. Lazy gluttons and. This is what these false

  462. prophets, this guy's the we're describing false prophets here.

  463. That are in Crete. That Titus had to deal with.

  464. So it wasn't an easy job, it was an easy job.

  465. So I just want to say that you know, one of the things that.

  466. We have to do as believers is that we always have to check

  467. ourselves to see where we. Are in the faith.

  468. Where are we? Are there some areas where I

  469. really need to give to the? Lord.

  470. You know, have I become glutton in any area?

  471. Have I become driven by my flesh in any area of my life?

  472. Have I began to do? Exercises or do.

  473. Different things with the truth. Have I begin to play around with

  474. the truth instead of being a straight shooter?

  475. Have I begin to manipulate or deceive in any kind of way?

  476. We have to check these things out because these things can

  477. subtly creep into our own lives. And this is what the.

  478. Word of God is. For us, and that's why we

  479. should. Love it because it is our.

  480. Measuring. It's our monitor.

  481. That shows us where. OK, you're too.

  482. Far to this side. Come on back over, you know,

  483. we've got cars now that have. These corrective.

  484. Gadgets in them that if you go across the line it brings you

  485. back over. Or or gives you a.

  486. Signal and. That's what the Word of God does

  487. for us. You're going a little.

  488. Bit too far, bit bring you back over.

  489. You're going too far that way. It brings you back over.

  490. And thank God. For it because we need it.

  491. We need it. We can.

  492. All fall prey. To that from time to time

  493. because. The devil is subtle.

  494. In what he does and how he does it.

  495. But we're not ignorant. Of his devices.

  496. Thank God this has been Living Waters of Grace, a ministry of

  497. Pastor Lewis Harrell of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.

  498. Today's message has been on the book of Titus.

  499. This book is a master class in how Christians should live in

  500. modern culture. Titus was ministering to the

  501. people of Crete, an island off the coast of Greece, but he was

  502. facing many challenges. The Cretans who came to know

  503. Jesus seemed to assimilate Jesus into their existing culture

  504. instead of allowing themselves to be transformed by the Holy

  505. Spirit inside of them. Others were fully devoting

  506. themselves to Jesus but shutting themselves off from the world

  507. around them. The apostle Paul encourages

  508. Titus to help his audience find a middle ground where they can

  509. live in this world while still following a different way of

  510. life in Jesus. If you would like to learn more

  511. about what it means to faithfully follow the teachings

  512. of Christ in a world full of darkness, we'd love to get

  513. connected with you in person. If you are in Greensburg, PA,

  514. we'd love to invite you to join us at Calvary Chapel

  515. Westmoreland. We meet every Sunday at 10:30 AM
