  1. This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark

  2. Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,

  3. County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he

  4. continues teaching through God's Word.

  5. We need to be praying for our brothers and sisters, and I know

  6. sometimes we don't. We're thinking so much about

  7. here and now, my life and my family, my church, whatever my

  8. community, my city, and we need to be praying for those things.

  9. But we need to ask God to give us a mind to pray for those who

  10. are being persecuted right now. There's more Christians who have

  11. been martyred over the last 50 years and all the history of

  12. martyrdom from the beginning of the Church age.

  13. That's hard to believe. We don't hear about that on the

  14. nightly news. I personally don't watch much of

  15. the news anymore. I can't remember the last time I

  16. was encouraged by watching the news, but there was plenty of

  17. information available online. Whether it's genocide in Nigeria

  18. or persecution in China, Christians are being killed for

  19. their faith. Pastor Clark explains today that

  20. we in the United States are privileged not to face the

  21. intense persecution that other believers deal with.

  22. We bear the responsibility to pray for them continually.

  23. We must be prayerfully supporting our brothers and

  24. sisters now. Here's Pastor Clark in

  25. Revelation Chapter 2 with today's edition of Living Waters

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  26. of Grace. And to the Angel of the Church

  27. of Smyrna, right these things, says the 1st and the last, who

  28. was dead and came to life. I know your works, tribulation

  29. and poverty, but you are rich. And I know the blasphemy of

  30. those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of

  31. Satan. Do not fear any of those things

  32. which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil's about to

  33. throw some of you into prison that you may be tested and you

  34. will have tribulation 10 days. Be faithful until death, and I

  35. will give you the crown of life. The Church of Ephesus was a very

  36. good church, but it had one problem.

  37. It had left its first love. It no longer had passion and

  38. zeal and focus on their relationship with Jesus.

  39. And so when we're studying these churches, I don't want you just

  40. to think about the churches back way back then, but think about

  41. the churches that also exist today.

  42. How are we similar in some ways to these very churches we're

  43. studying? And that we we talked last week

  44. about the importance of having our first love restored with the

  45. Lord, that we're close to him, that that we're in love with him

  46. and that we want to follow him and, and seek his face and live

  47. in a way that's pleasing to him. We need the Lord to rekindle

  48. that love moment by moment, don't we?

  49. It's something we have to work at.

  50. It's something we have to be asking the Lord to do in our

  51. hearts because if we don't, we get cold.

  52. All of us. We we drift.

  53. And so Ephesus was a good, good lesson for us.

  54. Jesus said repent and go back and do your first work, lest I

  55. come and remove the lampstand or the light of influence from that

  56. particular local church. Now, Smyrna is a completely

  57. different type of church and when we study these seven

  58. churches, some are really messed up and some are actually being

  59. faithful in the midst of a very, very difficult time of

  60. tribulation. 2 churches that weren't actually even been given

  61. the admonition to repent was Smyrna in the Philadelphia

  62. church in Philadelphia. Those two churches weren't given

  63. the admonition that Ephesus was and some of the others.

  64. But Smyrna, just for a little bit geographical background

  65. here. It's the modern city of Izmir

  66. today, which is a gateway into modern Turkey.

  67. It was a beautiful, splendid city, was actually the most

  68. beautiful city at that particular time, had the highest

  69. population of Jews and and Asia Minor, and it was the only 7,

  70. only one of seven of the churches we're studying that's

  71. actually still in existence today.

  72. It's not called Smyrna anymore, it's called Izmir.

  73. It also was a city that had been destroyed prior to all this

  74. event occurring as we're studying here in Revelation

  75. approximately 7700 years earlier.

  76. This particular city was destroyed and, and the laden

  77. ruins for about 300 years and then it was rebuilt,

  78. reestablished and it became just an amazing city of influence,

  79. gateway city, as I said, into the modern day country of

  80. Turkey. It's the most brief of all the

  81. letters. I when I was starting to study

  82. this, I said, well, boy, I'm, I'm not going to have enough

  83. information here. It's only going to take about 10

  84. minutes. I'm going to have to go into

  85. program this after I got into this.

  86. No way that I run out of information.

  87. It's just amazing all the things that are written down about the

  88. what happened with this particular church.

  89. So even though it's very, very brief, only a few verses, very,

  90. very powerful things to say to us, these believers in verse 9

  91. says, he says, I know your works, your tribulation and

  92. poverty, they were going through really difficult times.

  93. Now for you today, it might be hard for you to wrap your mind

  94. around what that would be like in your situation right now.

  95. All of us have trials in our lives, right?

  96. Some degree of trial and tribulation.

  97. Not one of us here doesn't have something they're they're going

  98. through or thinking through how you going to get past it, how

  99. you going to deal with it, How you going to have the wisdom to

  100. know how to be influenced in the godly way through whatever it is

  101. that you might personally be going through individually.

  102. But the tribulation that these folks were going through is much

  103. more difficult than than what we're going through.

  104. They were basically being assaulted for their faith in

  105. Christ. They were being thrown in

  106. prison. They were being beat.

  107. Many of them died as martyrs for their faith.

  108. They were, because of their faith, not given the opportunity

  109. to earn a living. It would be like the companies

  110. that we work for today, that if they found out we were

  111. Christians, they would say you don't have a job unless you

  112. forsake and curse Christ. That's how tough it was.

  113. And because of that, the people were very poor.

  114. They didn't have much in the material wealth that we have

  115. been given the privilege to experience in our culture, our

  116. country. They were plundered and deprived

  117. of their right to work. And you think about living in

  118. those days. And I tried to think about some

  119. countries that are actually going through that right now as

  120. we speak. And I think of Indonesia.

  121. It's a beautiful, beautiful country, but it's basically

  122. overrun by Muslim rule. If you're found to be a

  123. believer, you will possibly be martyred and killed for your

  124. faith. Sudan, Nigeria, Afghanistan,

  125. Iraq, Iran, many, many of these countries as we speak are going

  126. through these kind of times. So we need to be praying for our

  127. brothers and sisters. And I know sometimes we don't.

  128. We're thinking so much about here and now, my life and my

  129. family and my church, whatever, my community, my city.

  130. And we need to be praying for those things.

  131. But we need to ask God to give us a mind to pray for those who

  132. are being persecuted right now. There's more Christians who have

  133. been martyred over the last 50 years and all the history of

  134. martyrdom from the beginning of the Church age.

  135. And it's hard to believe we don't hear about that on the

  136. nightly news. We'll hear about other types of

  137. atrocities, but you don't hear a lot from your local newscaster,

  138. your major television affiliates telling you that Christians are

  139. being martyred in many of these countries, China and other

  140. countries. It's been very, very difficult

  141. to live in as a as a believer. We're still given the privilege

  142. in our country to have freedom of religion.

  143. We have the right to assemble, to worship and to proclaim

  144. Christ in the media. We still have that privilege and

  145. the print, television, radio, we also have the ability to

  146. communicate our faith even in our places of employment.

  147. And that's a privilege I think so often that we take for

  148. granted. John was teaching us this

  149. morning and he said, you know, we should be praying that God

  150. would give us one person in our life this week that we might be

  151. able to share the gospel with and really be thankful that we

  152. have the privilege and we can do that without fear of being in

  153. prison, right? Yet these people in these

  154. countries and the folks in Smyrna, because of the

  155. persecution and because of the rules and the laws of Caesar,

  156. they spoke about their faith in Christ anyway.

  157. They didn't care if they lost their job.

  158. They didn't care if they were thrown into prison or beaten or

  159. even killed for their faith. And as I read that, I say, Lord,

  160. where's my heart and all this? If I was put in a situation

  161. right now, today, tomorrow, next week, where I had to lose my job

  162. because of my stand for Christ, would I be willing to stand up

  163. for my faith? We all say, yeah, we would.

  164. But when we're in that situation, only God knows what

  165. our hearts would actually do, right?

  166. But I believe that God gives us grace in the midst of the times,

  167. of the trials and the tribulations.

  168. We don't have the ability, so to speak, to think I'm tough, I'm a

  169. strong Christian, I can handle anything.

  170. I'll do this. That's foolish.

  171. But to realize, Lord help me, if I'm ever put in a situation like

  172. these folks in Smyrna, that I'll be found faithful to the end,

  173. not relying upon my strength, but upon the strength that only

  174. you can give me. And that's called dying grace.

  175. Many of the martyrs, when they gave their lives for Christ,

  176. they were freaking out up until the moment that they were taken

  177. to the torches. And once they were tied up and

  178. the fire was being lit and being lit, many of them said.

  179. And before they died, there was such a sense of God's presence

  180. and peace that they were excited about what was waiting for them

  181. on the other side of this world. And that's the grace of God

  182. provided for us, I believe, in the time of our most desperate

  183. need. There was one minister at that

  184. time, a very famous church father.

  185. You might have read about him as you studied church history and

  186. approximately 155. His name is Polycarp and he was

  187. a minister, but that later on after these days of Smyrna.

  188. But this persecution continued intensely up until the 3rd

  189. century until Constantine saw this vision in the sky of a

  190. cross. And he said he heard this voice

  191. saying by this you'll conquer. And that's when he became a

  192. Christian and he made Christianity the religion of the

  193. provinces at that time. And so the persecution stopped.

  194. That was a wonderful thing in some ways.

  195. But when the persecution stops, what happens is a church has a

  196. tendency to then become lukewarm and cold.

  197. That's just the way it is. But anyway, Polycarp, he was

  198. given this edict that he had to come into the Colosseum.

  199. It was during the times of The Olympian Games, similar to like

  200. right now what we have going on in Canada.

  201. And it was accustomed that he would have to or Christians,

  202. anybody, they'd have to give allegiance to Caesar, basically

  203. say Caesar is Lord. And there was no way Polycarp

  204. was going to do that. He refused.

  205. And so the crowds are crying out in the Coliseum for Polycarp

  206. because he was very influential at the time.

  207. Everybody knew his faith and how he lived.

  208. And they're all thinking like this guy, he's not going to

  209. stand for his faith when it's going to possibly cost him his

  210. life. This is what he replied whenever

  211. they told him you curse Christ, you make a sacrifice of Caesar

  212. or you die. This is what a polycarp said. 86

  213. years have I served him and he has done me no wrong.

  214. How can I blasphemy my king who saved me and he was burned at

  215. the stake by the Romans and Jews?

  216. How awesome. What an example to us of a hero

  217. in the faith. And so Jesus is encouraging them

  218. as he speaks to his church in Smyrna, He says to them that he

  219. is the 1st and the last who was dead and he came to life.

  220. So he's speaking to those who are facing martyrdom.

  221. He's saying, think about this, they crucified me, they killed

  222. me, but the grave could not hold me.

  223. The grave won't hold you guys either.

  224. If you're believers in Christ, no matter how you die, no matter

  225. what happens in your life, whether it's just your natural

  226. death, old age or disease or a tragedy or maybe for someone day

  227. martyrdom. We don't have to fear or worry

  228. because as Christ has been risen from the dead, we also shall

  229. rise in newness of life. And so he's speaking to them

  230. comfort and he says in verse 10 about the sacrifice that he

  231. made, He said don't fear the things that you're about to

  232. suffer and the deed. The devil's about to throw some

  233. of you into prison that you may be tested and you will have

  234. tribulation for 10 days. What Christ went through for you

  235. and me that the death of the tomb couldn't hold him.

  236. We read about that in the the Gospels during our daily Bible

  237. reading. I mean, they sealed that tomb

  238. up. They sent the soldiers there

  239. because they heard, hey, this guy, supposedly he's, they say

  240. he's going to raise. We've heard them say this about

  241. him. He said this about himself.

  242. So this would be on the safe side.

  243. Get down and really seal that tomb.

  244. I mean, a huge rock was, was pushed in front of it.

  245. How in the world you'd ever get that thing off would be a

  246. miracle in itself. But the seal, it made it

  247. impossible to do anything with that.

  248. I mean, that was a done deal. And yet that sealed tomb, that

  249. big stone couldn't hold him, could it?

  250. He walked out the third day and he was seen by over 500

  251. witnesses. He was alive from the dead.

  252. So he's encouraging them to be faithful and death.

  253. Don't, don't fear. He's exhorting them.

  254. Be faithful until death. And he says you'll be crowned

  255. with the reward of life. And you think about the trials.

  256. He says, I know your works, your tribulation, your poverty.

  257. Sometimes we think about trials. Why do we have them?

  258. We all go through them. But there's nothing like trials

  259. to purify us, is there? There's nothing like difficulty

  260. in life to get us on our face and say, Lord, help me.

  261. And that's humility. When a trial comes, God allows

  262. it because he knows it's going to bring us closer to him.

  263. Now we're freaking out. We don't like it.

  264. We want it to go away as quickly as possible.

  265. He understands our frame, our weakness.

  266. But he says don't be afraid that the trying of your faith works.

  267. Patience, try. Your faith will make you like

  268. me, and you'll shine like pure gold.

  269. If we're going to be glorified together with him, the apostle

  270. Peter tells us, we also have to suffer with him.

  271. And we always have to remember all of us, that in the midst of

  272. the trials and the struggles of life, God is with us, isn't he?

  273. He always is with us. He promises He'll never leave us

  274. or forsake us. Sometimes we feel like, God,

  275. where are you? I felt like that at times.

  276. I'm sure you have too. You're going through something.

  277. You're like, Lord, where are you in all this?

  278. But he's there, He's always there.

  279. He promises never to leave us. He walks through it with us.

  280. I like what Psalm 32 says. He says, behold, the eye of the

  281. Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy

  282. to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive and in

  283. falling. Our soul waits for the Lord.

  284. He is our help and our shield for our heart shall rejoice in

  285. him because we have trusted in his holy name.

  286. Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us just as we hope in you.

  287. He says that in these trials, in the midst of these trials,

  288. they're rich. And James says in chapter 2,

  289. verse 5, listen my beloved brethren, has God not chosen the

  290. poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom

  291. which He promised to them who love him?

  292. I think about the Christians in Haiti.

  293. You've seen him on TV, haven't you?

  294. They have lost everything. They didn't have anything to

  295. begin with. One of the most poor countries

  296. in the world. They have this horrendous

  297. earthquake that wipes out over 200,000 people.

  298. Many of them lost their children, their spouses, their

  299. loved ones, their friends, and I was blown away to see them

  300. assembling together, raising their hands and worshipping God.

  301. Poor, inheriting the Kingdom of God.

  302. He speaks about the adversary, the devil, and he is a real

  303. being. He is interested in destroying

  304. all of our lives. The Bible tells us the devil has

  305. come to seek and to kill and to rob and to destroy.

  306. He is involved in this world every day to keep it from

  307. knowing the truth of Jesus Christ.

  308. He is sending his emissaries out all the time to prevent you and

  309. me from growing in the grace and the knowledge of God.

  310. He wants us to be stunted, immature Christians.

  311. He wants us to live without our inheritance in this world, not

  312. experiencing the Kingdom of God within.

  313. He'll do everything he can to destroy your faith.

  314. The Lord allows him to work. That's the mystery.

  315. And the purposes of God are sometimes very, very complex for

  316. our human frail minds to understand.

  317. But the Bible tells us that God's ways aren't our ways.

  318. Neither are his thoughts. Our thoughts, for his ways are

  319. so much higher than our ways, and His thoughts so much higher

  320. than ours. There's a purpose in all these

  321. things, and God is ultimately glorified.

  322. And one day this enemy of our souls and the enemy of the

  323. Kingdom of God will be one day in that final judgment, pass

  324. into the lake of fire forever and ever, never to bother or

  325. hassle anyone again. But he's always working to

  326. trouble the church. His big focus is to destroy the

  327. Church of Jesus Christ. The good news is Jesus Christ

  328. says I will build my church and the gates of hell will not

  329. prevail against it. The enemy can take everybody

  330. out, but it can't stop the work of God moving on.

  331. And many of these people had given their lives in this day

  332. and Smyrna for the sake of the gospel, but it hasn't stopped

  333. the movement of the gospel. 2000 years later.

  334. He speaks about these people that are enemies of God and

  335. they're tools of the devil. It says these folks say they are

  336. Jews and they are not two different kind of Jews.

  337. Jews that have a heart for Messiah, Jews who are waiting.

  338. Jews even at the time of Christ crucifixion were sensitive, even

  339. though they couldn't understand that he at this time was the one

  340. they were waiting for. They had a vulnerable, a

  341. vulnerability of softness. Many of them eventually did come

  342. to believe on Christ because the early church was made-up

  343. primarily of Jews and they carried the worship of the

  344. synagogue right into the New Testament.

  345. Many of the symbolism and the pictures and the art and the

  346. design of the priestly garments and robes were carried through

  347. from the Jewish temple. It's interesting as we're

  348. reading right now in Exodus, isn't it the, the, the specific

  349. detail on how God wanted that Tabernacle built, the colors,

  350. the, the length of the, the material that was used, the

  351. embroidery and the, the symbolism, the type at this,

  352. this mind blowing of the, of the beauty of, of God and, and his

  353. Kingdom, his church. But there were obviously as

  354. there is today, not any Jews but Gentiles who cannot stand the

  355. gospel of Christ and they are the enemies of the gospel.

  356. I would say organizations like the ACLU.

  357. They are dead set against our freedoms as Christians and the

  358. message that we proclaim the person we believe in and trust

  359. in his Lord and Savior. Many, many people today on the

  360. liberal side of the agenda that are pushing all these teachings

  361. of of really ungodliness are against what we do here and what

  362. we do as churches in these last days, standing on the Scriptures

  363. and teaching the word of God and so.

  364. Because of the large population of Jews in Smyrna, the

  365. Christians were really overrun by all these people that wanted

  366. to destroy them. It was a tough place to be a

  367. Christian in. They were the main enemies of

  368. the gospel. Verse 10 he says to them again,

  369. don't fear these things which you are about to suffer.

  370. Luke chapter 12, verse 4, Jesus says to the disciples, My

    Luke 12:4

  371. friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that

  372. have no more that they can do, but fear the one who has the

  373. power to cast 1 into hell. So Christ himself reminding us

  374. that we're not to fear what man can do to us.

  375. You know, there's this element of fear that we all have, a fear

  376. of disease, fear of failure, fear of financial ruin, fear of

  377. losing jobs. We all, we all struggle with a

  378. certain type of fear, but a fear of knowing that you're in the

  379. jail cell tonight. This is your last night on

  380. earth. And you know, tomorrow you're

  381. going to be thrown to the lions or you're going to have your

  382. head cut off because of your faith.

  383. And you're probably walking around pacing in the cell

  384. saying, Lord, I really believe you.

  385. But I really have to go through this.

  386. Is there another way out of this?

  387. You know, would you mind if I just, you know, I really believe

  388. in you, but would you mind if I just told him I didn't?

  389. I'm sure those things would go through all of our minds and our

  390. hearts, especially when our families, maybe we're at home

  391. and we knew that we wouldn't see them again until the next life.

  392. The struggle of having to wait for the Lord to bring everything

  393. to a final culmination in the last day.

  394. But I think about martyrs. I think about Stephen, the first

  395. martyr in the New Testament in Acts Chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  396. This is what happened after he's being accused of treason and

  397. he's speaking out and proclaiming the gospel with all

  398. his heart, all his mind, all his soul is strength.

  399. Such conviction and fervor and love in his heart for the people

  400. he's speaking to. He's speaking to them about who

  401. Jesus is and what he did for them.

  402. It says that people were so angry they clenched their teeth.

  403. They just like, let me add them, let me get rid of them, just

  404. like they wanted to get rid of Christ.

  405. And it says, but he being full of the Holy Spirit.

  406. And that's the key, guys. No matter what we're going

  407. through in life, the struggles, the fears, the anxieties, the

  408. pressures at work or home or wherever, when we are filled

  409. with the Holy Spirit, we're overcomers.

  410. But when we're filled with our own vanity and pride and our own

  411. fear, we're basket cases. Stephen's full of the Holy

  412. Spirit. He gazes into heaven and God

  413. gives him a vision. He sees the glory of God and

  414. Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

  415. I love that Christ stood up. He it says right now he's seated

  416. at the right hand of Father ever living to make intercession for

  417. us his Saints day and night. He's praying for us all the

  418. time. But there's a limit, isn't

  419. there? What he's going to allow to

  420. happen to his kids. And so he sees what's going on

  421. with Steven and he couldn't help but to stand up.

  422. And one day he's going to stand up and not only stand up, but

  423. come back and put all things in order, and he's going to destroy

  424. wickedness from the face of the earth, and no one will ever

  425. raise their hand and one of his children again.

  426. What a day that'll be, huh? When are Jesus?

  427. We shall see when we look into his face, the one who saved us

  428. by his grace, the old song, What a day, glorious day that will

  429. be. And so Jesus, he stands in the

  430. right hand of the Father. And Stephen says, look, I see

  431. the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right

  432. hand of God. Thanks for being with us today

  433. here on Living Waters of Grace. We're in the Book of Revelation,

  434. and we find it fascinating how influential and involved the

  435. angels are in this book. They bring about whatever it is

  436. that God has instructed them to do, but it's through their

  437. actions that much of the judgements come on the earth.

  438. The angels are in submission to God as their authority, but He

  439. utilizes them in unique ways throughout this book.

  440. Like angels have a specific purpose from God, you have a

  441. unique purpose and plan too. God wants to use you in your

  442. life as a testimony to others and to bring others who are

  443. currently lost into the fold of God.

  444. God would love more than anything for all who are willing

  445. to come to Him for salvation, but He wants it to be their

  446. choice, not a forced situation. This is the way God works, not

  447. forcing himself on anyone, but giving each person free will.

  448. If you're interested in learning about this choice that's free

  449. and that it's a gift, go to calvarychapelonline.com and

  450. click on the About Us tab and then find the link for what we

  451. believe. We'd love to be a help and a

  452. resource for you as you walk through what it means to be a

  453. follower of Jesus. If you find the contact tab on

  454. our website, you can get in touch with us or submit a prayer

  455. request. We'd love to hear from you.

  456. That's all for today's edition and Revelation, but there's much

  457. more that Pastor Clark plans to share with us from this

  458. culminating book of the Bible. Stay tuned for that and make

  459. sure to mention this radio program to others.
