Live On Mission // Let's Get Moving

Rosa. It has been a crazy I don't know, three days or so.

We found out Thursday night at around eight thirty pm. We were having

a wisdom table meeting and a couple of our leaders were at the town hall

where the decision was made to shut the doors of the Trilaying Center for the

Arts. Again, just to reiterate, this has nothing to do with the

Movement Church. This is not on us. Our name is Bennett and we

ain't in it. We were renting that place. We were good tenants.

We have a good relationship with Michael and Debu Mattis. We love them and

we believe that they are going to work to fix the problem, But for

a while, we're gonna be temporarily displaced. This particular place, the Ponderosa,

is run by Andrew and Melanie Clark. Are they in the room right

now? Okay, hey, you guys wave at us. Andrew and Melanie

have been part of the Movement church for over a year now, is that

right? Yeah? And so I called him or texted him at like nine

thirty, Hey, can we use the chapel Sunday? This is the only

sun this spring that the chapel was not booked. Isn't that amazing? So?

Yeah, So you know when you say that God is a sovereign,

I just have some stories to tell you right about how good he is.

Now we're going to see how good he is this week. We're going to

find out where we're going to end up on Friday. On Friday, it's

snowed or late Thursday night at snowed. So all the schools in D thirty

eight were closed on Friday. So many of the phone calls that we will

make tomorrow we couldn't make on Friday to look and see is there a place

that we can meet temporarily. There are some really neat stories happening behind the

scenes that I'm not ready to share with you yet because they haven't come to

fruition. But as they happen, you're going to know about it. So

be the way to find out where the heck we are. Marty Taylor yesterday

had a good joke and so I'll give him credit for it. He said,

you know, maybe maybe we need to change the name of our church.

Maybe it's kind of hurting us in the long run. Maybe we should

be stationary church or permanent church, cement block church, you know, something

very permanent. Now. Man, God's on the move and we very much

believe that he absolutely knows what he's doing. Anybody want to say him into

that. So we're not worried. We're not troubled. You know, we

started this year if you watch that YouTube video that we put out on December

thirty first, we started this year looking at Psalm twenty four, and at

the end of Psalm twenty four, David says, open up you ancient doors,

open up you ancient gates, and let the King of Glory enter in

the Lord. This is my favorite phrase in the whole Psalm of twenty four.

It says the Lord invincible in battle, in Vince in battle. That

means God has never walked into a fight and wondered. He's never wondered.

Okay, he walks into a fight with absolute confidence. He is invincible in

battle. And that's our king, that's our God, that's our leader,

that's the leader of the movement Church. So I'm not worried. We don't

want you to be worried. We are going to find places or a place

for us to meet, and we're going to figure this out in the interim

between the time that the TLCA opens their doors, or maybe we'll find a

place that we like better. We don't know. We're just holding our hands

open and saying, God, what is it that you're doing, and what

is it that you want for us and from us and in us and through

us. You know, every week we read the forward, and I don't

know if you noticed the prepositions in the forward. Move in me, Oh

God, Move for me, Oh God, and move through me. Oh,

God, I totally believe that that's the story of the Movement Church.

That God is moving in us, He's moving for us, and he's moving

through us. You ought to say. So. With that said, we

are in this series called Let's Get Moving, and we have been working through

our core values of the Movement Church. It is a great time to talk

about our core values because when things like a location kind of fall from underneath

your feet, You're going to wait a minute, what is it that I'm

standing on right? What is it that I believe in? What is it

that I'm about, what is it that I'm for? And I'll tell you

one of the things that I'm very very, very very I can't say enough,

varies very against. One of the things that I am desperately against is

this hidden expectations. I hate hidden expectations. Anybody else in the room.

I can't stand hidden expectations. And so that's what these core values are about.

We had a feace with the Viights with the Michaels this week, Sondra

and Robert. Sondra and Robert. Yeah, and Data was kicking me under

the table because sometimes I could be very direct. But Sondra, do you

remember the moment I said, guys, one question I have for you is

what expectations are you bringing in to this experience of the Movement Church? What

expectations do you have for your church? And Dana's going, that's too direct

of a question, don't ask that question, and She's kicking me under the

table, and I was like, I meant what I said. I meant

this question. I want to know what these people expected me, right.

I hate hidden expectations, and so our core values are really in answer to

the question of what is it that we expect? We are all about managing

expectations here at the Movement Church because loaded indirect questions designed to investigate whether the

two of us are on the same page. No, thank you. I

learned this in marriage. Maybe some of your husbands have learned this in marriage

when your wife asked you this question, what do you want to do tonight?

Honey? What do you want to do tonight? Honey? If you

men, do you know that this is a trap? Are you aware?

Are you aware that this is a trap question? I used to think it

was a genuine question. My wife would say what do you want to do

tonight? And I would say, well, the Nuggets are playing the Timberwolves,

so I definitely want to sit and watch that. That's what I would

because I thought the question was what do you want to do tonight? I

really thought that's the question she was asking me, what do you want to

do tonight? Or what do you want to do tonight? That's not what

the question was. And so I learned over years, maybe I'll try this,

Maybe I'll answer the question by saying, honey, whatever you want to

do, whatever it is you want to do, is what will do tonight?

That's not the right answer either. That's that, in fact, is

the wrong answer, because what comes after that is you don't even know me,

right, And so the question that she's asking is do you know what

I want to do tonight? So when she says what do you want to

do tonight, what she's asking you is do you know what I want to

do tonight? I wish she would just ask me that, because then I

could say, no, I don't would you just tell me? But I

don't know what she wants to do tonight? Just tell me? And so

I can't stand hidden expectations. Sandra said that she used to ask Robert,

Hey, Robert, you want to help me with the diistions. And for

the first few years of their marriage, Robert would say no, and then

he realized she wasn't asking him if he wanted to help with the editions,

right, hidden expectations, And so these core values are really what we're trying

to tell you is we want to unhide the expectations. We want to get

them out in front of you, but so that we can get and so

the first week you heard from John Wilson about growing in groups. So think

of it this way. This is how it wants you to understand these core

values. They're an answer really to two or three questions all at once.

The first question is what is the life that God wants for you? God

wants for you, not from you, for you to grow in groups.

One of the absolute features of Christianity is growth. It's growth. Christianity is

not supposed to be this stagnant experience where you learn about Jesus, you learn

about salvation, and then you learn nothing else the rest of your life,

where you figure one thing out and that's it. That's not Christianity. Christianity

is a constant growing and learning and evolution of your faith and of your understanding

of the character and nature of God. You are supposed to be growing,

and we think that the best way to do that is not on your own.

God made the heavens and the earth, and he said it's good.

He made our barks. He said they were good. I don't know what

that. He said, it's all good. And then he said there's one

thing that's not good. It's for you to be alone. God wants us

to be in community, So grow in groups. We expect that you would

yearn for growth. The leadership of the Movement Church expects that you would yearn

for growth, that you would want to grow, and you should expect that

we, the leadership of the Movement Church, are going to do whatever it

takes to help you grow. You see what I'm saying. I'm trying to

unhide the expectations. So what I'm telling is this church and Movement Church,

no matter where we meet, we will not be a community for the frozen

chosen. I'm not going to name any names. I don't want you to

either, but I know that you know of people who are part of churches

where it's just why do you go to church here? I don't know.

This is just where we go to church. Okay, well, what's the

mission and the vision and the values of the church. I don't know what

we've been here in thirty seven years, right, not here. That's not

what this is going to be. This will not be a community where the

frozen chosen find a home. This is a place where we are going to

generate growth. And you ought to say amen, and you ought to say

it without me having to tell you to say about it. So unhiddon ext

i taste. Here's the second one. Melissa Janish. Last week she preached

serve in sincerity, and she gave a beautiful message despite all the tech problems

that we had last week, she gave a beautiful message. And the point

that she really zeroed in on was not the serving but the sincerity. She

dug into the sincerity and I love that because we at the Movement Church,

we don't want or need you to serve beyond your identity. If you do

not love babies, stay out of children's ministry. Okay. If you cannot

sing but your husband says you can, I'll be the judge. Okay.

We don't want or need you to be anything other than you. And by

the way, neither does God. God does not need you to be anything

other than you tell the person next to you, there's nobody like you.

Tell them there's nobody like you. But the expectation, listen the expectation here.

The expectation is that you contribute yourself. That you don't just consume a

church, that you don't just come and just receive, but that you contribute.

That's what a community of faith is supposed to look like. That's the

expectation that you contribute yourself, and that you should expect that we as a

church would develop you. Because if you walk through the doors and we tell

you we want you to serve in sincerity, and you say, cool,

I don't know who I am, I don't know what I'm good at,

I don't know what my gifts are. Awesome, We're gonna help you figure

that out, and then we're gonna put you in a place where you can

serve and you can feel the breath of God's lungs in you, you can

feel what it feels like to serve in sincerity. That is an unhidden expectation.

Next week, you're gonna hear from this man right here, mister Jeff

Rudder, you're gonna hear about another unhidden expectation, and I don't want you

to skip church next week because it's important, Okay, But that one is

giving and generosity. I'm just gonna give you a preview. Here's the idea.

God loves a cheerful giver. Why because a cheerful giver is free.

A cheerful giver is not bound up and tightened up by oh man, how

much money does the pastor want from me? Zero? The pastor wants zero

dollar from you? Do you hear me? What God wants is for you

to be free to give your generosity because that's who He made you to be.

You're gonna hear more about that next week. But today our unhidden expectation

and the reason I'm preaching it. I don't know if you notice. Our

teaching team is covering this series, but the reason I'm teaching this one is

because it's the one I'm the most passionate about, and it's this one.

Live on mission, Live on mission. Your church expects for you to live

on mission, and you should expect of your church to help you do that.

So what does that mean? What does it mean to live on mission?

Well? I mean at the core of it. Here's what I mean

by this. It's really what Jesus spent a lot of time doing during the

Gospels is communicating this idea that ministry is not reserved for the professionals. Ministry

got taken out of the hands of the professionals by Jesus Christ, and he

got given to the body. Now I have a role, I have a

responsibility, and we'll talk about that. But Jesus made it so clear in

what's called the Great Commission. It's in Matthew Versus Matthew, chapter twenty eight,

verse eighteen. It says this Jesus came, and he told his disciples,

I have been given all authority. Everybody say, oh, not of

all authority. Somebody has all authority. Then you better listen to what they're

about to tell you. To do right all authority and having and honor.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the

name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Teach these

new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you, and be sure

of this. I am with you always, even to the end of the

age. God is saying to us wherever you are, whatever neighborhood you live

in, whatever town you're in, whatever profession you have, whatever family you

found yourself in. Your responsibility in your context is to go and make disciples

of all of the people around me. That's the idea this summer. This

past summer, there was a movie called Barbie that came out, and by

see Barbie, by seeing the movie, Okay, anybody liked the movie?

Now I'm macdone, don't Okay? There was a song in a movie that

brought me to tears when I watched it. I mean, I'm just sobbing

listening to this song. There's a song called What Was I Made For?

It is written by Billie Eilish. If I know this song, what was

I Made For? Absolutely stunning question. Now the song is supposed to be

sung from the perspective of a Barbie doll who has come to life, and

she's trying to make sense of why am I here? What is my purpose?

What is my existence all about? Listen to these lyrics. She says,

I used to float and now I just fall down. I used to

know, but I'm not so sure. Now What was I made for?

She says? Taking a drive, I was an ideal. I look so

alive. It turns out I'm not real, just something you paid for.

But what was I made for? And the chorus says, I don't know

how to feel, but I want to try. I don't know how to

feel, But someday am I listen to this verse? When did it end

all the enjoyment? I'm sad again. Don't tell my boyfriend I love that

lyric. It's not what he's made for? What was I made for?

And this last verse of the song is just like amazing to me. I

think I forgot how to be happy. Something I'm not, but something I

can be, something I wait for, something I'm made for. That is

so human, it's so beautifully human. And it's a question that all of

us have to wrestle with on some level. What was I made for?

Why am I here? What am I doing here? What's my purpose?

We believe at the Movement Church that your purpose is to live on mission is

that everywhere you go, in all that you do, that you would shine

and share the love of Jesus. Our mission statement is this is what we

say is earning the right to share the gospel by loving people and serving people,

really, really well, that's what you were made for, earning the

right to tell them about Jesus, by the way that you love them,

by the way that you go and make disciples. Here's the metrics. Make

disciples of all nations. Baptize people in the name of the Father, the

Son of the Holy Spirit. Teach these disciples to obey Jesus, and never

do any of it on your own. Now, in churches, we can

use all kinds of metrics to evaluate ourselves as followers of Jesus. We can

add so much legalism to our Christianity. We can put all these metrics onto

ourselves, Like what sins we avoid, Ooh, I did a great job

of avoiding this sin this week. What good we can accomplish in parentheses on

our own, what wealth or time we invest, what moments we spend in

the word, and what effort we make in serving a church, how we

love, how we serve, and how we affect our family. We can

use all of those metrics and go, this is how I know I'm doing

a good job at the whole Christian thing. But Jesus says that the metrics

that matter are these, Are you making disciples of all nations? Are you

doing that? Are you actively replicating your Christianity, your faith into other people?

Only you know the answer to that question. Are you baptizing people in

the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Guys,

we could fill up every seat in this chapel. But are we seeing

stories of people whose lives have been changed because you decided to live on mission?

Are we teaching these disciples what it looks like to obey and follow Jesus?

And are we choosing not to be lone rangers? Are we doing it

with each other? What was I made for? I was made to do

that. You were made to do that? And that's what the movement church

is all about. And this is where I've come in. This is where

you know, Pastor fight, Richie fight. This is my job. I

have a part to play in your part to play. I have a part

to play in your story. And it's this. Listen to this and Ephesians

four, Paul is laying out we just read through this this year, this

last year. But Paul is going to lay out for us my responsibility to

you. Listen to this, he says, and he God gave the apostles,

the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and the teachers to do.

What to equip the saints for the work of ministry. If you think

ministry is fun and play and just enjoyment and la la Land, Paul says,

We're going to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building

up the body of Christ, until they'll be an end to it, until

we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the

Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of

the fullness of Christ. Why so that we may no longer be children tossed

to and fro by the waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine,

by human cunning, by craftiness and deceitful schemes. So my job,

your church's job, your leadership at your church, our job is to equip

you to live your life on mission. That's our job. That's what I

signed up for when I said yes, I'll be the senior pastor of the

Movement Church. This right here is what I signed up for. It's not

just the preaching, I mean, that's part of it. I mean we're

gonna hear about the Word of God today and hopefully something I say to you

from the Word is gonna say and it's going to be portable and you're gonna

take it with you in your life. But man, it doesn't really matter

what happens on Sunday mornings. So it matters what happens Monday through Saturday.

And my job is to equip you to understand that and to live it out.

And again you ought to say, amen, I know that this is

like, it's sort of this paradigm shift because I think we get fooled by

Okay, Well, the guy up on the stage is preaching, he's the

professional Christian, he's got it all figured out. I came here to hear

from him, to be inspired that I'm actually not so bad of a person

after all. Right, that's why I can't. Well that's okay, But

the reason I can't, the reason i'm here today, the reason I do

this job is to equip you to live on mission. That's my job.

So with all of that said, that was just the intro. With all

of that said, I'll get through these quick. But with all of that

said, let's ask this question. What does it take to live on mission?

What does it take? What's it going to require of him, and

I'm going to give you three of these. I think that all three of

these are just little mental shifts that you need to make in your mind.

The Bible says that you will be renewed by the transforming of your mind,

and so I believe that I'm going to give you these three ideas. They're

all scriptural that are going to help you to see your life a little differently

so that you can live on a mission. So check this out. What

does it take to live on mission? Here's the first one. Choose providence

over coincidence. Choose providence over coincidence. What is providence? Here's the definition

of providence, the foreseeing care and guidance of God over the creatures of the

earth. The foreseeing care and guidance of God over the creatures of the earth.

Guys, Thursday night, we're in our Wisdom Table meeting. We're forecasting

the future. We're talking about months and months ahead. We're dreaming about what

God's going to do in our church. That's what we're doing in our wisdom

table meeting. John Cressman and Gonzalez walk in from a town hall. They

sit out. That's it. We're locked out. What Yeah, it's over.

It's a wrap. We're locked out. We're done. It's over.

Huh okay. So then we kind of I mean, I wish it was

on video. I'm glad it's not. We just kind of sat there,

I mean I just sat there, stunned, just kind of going, Okay,

it's Thursday night. We have church on Sunday. Where in the world

are we gonna meet? How are we going to do this? I've got

thirty seven thousand questions. It is rolling through my mind, you know,

And we just stopped and prayed and said, all right, well tomorrow all

of us are going to do our best to hustle. We've made phone calls

and talked to people and said what do you think? Is this a place?

Is this a place? And again there's stories I can't tell you yet.

I cannot wait to tell you their fun stories. But conversations started happening

on Friday, Ideas started happening, and we started to see that God was

actually stirring amongst us. He is provident. And again, this is the

ondly Sunday that this particular building that we're in, this particular spring of twenty

twenty four was available to us Thursday night at nine pm. What is providence,

the foreseeing care and guidance of God over the creatures of the earth.

Listen to this In Matthew, Jesus says, don't be afraid of those who

want to kill your body. They cannot touch your soul. Fear only God,

who can destroy both soul and body in hell. What is the price

of two sparrows one copper point? But not a single sparrow can fall to

the ground without your father knowing it. Your Father knows what's going on in

your life. And listen to this, and the very hairs on your head,

even Steve White's it's alone er. They're all number. I mean,

we know the number. All of us know the number for Steve. God

knows all of the number for all of us. So don't be afraid.

You are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. You are

more valuable to God. Mark Twain said this, There are no coincidences,

just God incidences. That's not a word, by the way, incidences.

The word is incidents major and that offends me, but it's cute. There

are no coincidences, just God incidences. Now the word coincidence. This word

coincidence, in fact, is only in your New Testament one time. This

word is not a biblical concept. It's only in your New Testament one time.

It happens in Luke, and it's Jesus talking. It's the parable of

the Good Samaritan. And there's this moment where Jesus says this. He talks

about this guy walks by, didn't help. This guy walks by, didn't

help. And then he says, and by a coincidence, a certain priest

was going down in that way, and having seen him, he passed over

on the opposite side, by a coincidence. Now, in the Greek this

is what it says. The word coincidence is translated from the Greek word sinkirion,

which is a combination of two words soon and curios. Soon means together

with curios means supreme in authority. So a biblical definition of coincidence would be

what occurs together by God's providential arrangement of circumstances. So Jesus is saying there

are no coincidences, just God incidences. That's the way it works your life,

when you look back on it and you begin to make sense of it.

If you go, wow, look at what God was doing, look

at how He was working. Man, if we could do that in the

moment, our faith would be so much stronger. Somehow, it seems like

we can only make sense of that in hindsight, right, But man,

if we could do it in the moment, our faith would be so much

stronger. And so I would say this to you. Since you are where

you are, when you are, and why you are on purpose and for

a purpose, shouldn't you take a moment to ask God how you might seize

upon that purpose for his glory. So we printed out these block maps.

Orf I got one? Did you get one when you came in? Pull

them out? If you got it, We're gonna have a little competition.

Movement Church. Okay, the first person that fills out their block pat and

posts it on our Instagram just tag us at Instagram. Okay, well you're

gonna have that's the first pot at Movement Church. CEO at Movement Church CEO,

the first person that fills this thing out. And so what you want

to do is you're in the middle. Who are the neighbors that surround your

house? All of these neighbors. The first person that fills it out and

posts it on Instagram is going to get a prize. I'm not going to

tell you what the prize is. It will be a great price, Okay.

I don't want you to do it for the prize. I want all

of us to do it, and I want you to race. And if

we all race, then we'll all put it on Instagram and what a story

It'll be, right. But whoever does it first is going to get a

prize. My promise to you. It's important that we know that a neighbors

In the fifties and sixties, America was a front yard culture. Did you

know this? America was a front yard culture. Life happened in the front

yard. People were throwing footballs. You know, Hey, Bob, what's

going on? Man? Oh? How you doing, Sally? You know?

People are walking by that thing like I don't even know about it because

I saw it in the movies. I didn't grow up with it, but

I saw it on Leave It to Beaver, right. But America was a

front yard culture. Now what are we We're a backyard culture. We're a

garage doore culture. What do we do? We drive it to our neighborhood,

We press the button, we pull into our house, we press the

button. People never see us because then we go and hang out in the

backyard, throw the football with the kids. That's what happens in America.

If you don't do that, congratulations, But most of us do, and

so most of us don't even know the names of the people that live right

next door to us. Know the names of the people who live right next

door. Now, listen to me. I am not advocating that you go

knock on your neighbor's door and say, I want to tell you Jesus Christ.

Okay, please don't do that. Please don't do that. What is

our slogan? Earn the right, earn the right to share the gospel by

what loving people really really well? Love your neighbors, Care for your neighbors,

your neighbors going out of town. Hey can I water your plants?

Hey? Do you need help with your dog? Hey? What can I

do? Right? Hey? I'll make sure that no robbers are going to

steal anything from your house, be a good neighbor and know their names.

Enough said you with me? So your church's job is to equip you to

live your life on viition, What does it take to live life on vins

choose providence over coincidence. Now, I want you to see this as we

talk about this next point. These guys, the New Testament writers, these

guys that wrote the New Testament, they understood that. They understood that there

was no coincidences, only God incidences. They understood that, and they also

understood something else. And I want to see if you'll pick it up.

I'm just going to give you some snippets from some of these writers, mostly

from the very beginning of the letters that they would write. So the first

one is from Paul, who's writing to a guy named tied Us, and

he says, this Paul a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ,

for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the

truth which accords with Godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God,

who never lies, promised before the ages begin, and at the proper time

manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the

command of God, our Savior. Has anyone started a letter like that?

Anyone ever dies. I'm gonna think I'm gonna write my grandma, I Richie

let anybody ever do this, anybody ever write a letter to someone with all

of these words. This is how Paul. This is how significant his life

was he understood it to be. Listen to James, the brother of Jesus.

He says this, a servant of God, God and of the Lord

Jesus Christ, to the twelve Tribes and the dispersion, Greetings, and I've

thought a lot about this verse this week. Count it all joy, my

brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the

testing of your faith produces steadfastness, and lets steadfastness have its full effect,

that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. That's James.

Listen to Peter. That's how he starts his first Peter, he says,

blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to his

great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is

imperishable, undefiled, unfading, kept in heaven. For you, who by

God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in

the last time. And John the Beloved, when he's writing the Book of

Revelation, Listen to how he starts it. He says, the revelation of

Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that

must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his

servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony

of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one

who reads aloud the words of this prophecy that means I'm blessed, and blessed

are those who hear that means You're blessed, and who keep what is written

in it, for the time is near. Now I'm gonna give you the

point that will unpack it. What does it take to live on missions Number

one was choose not to believe in coincidence but providence. Number two is choose

eternal and not temporary. Choose the eternals over the temporaries. And for all

four of these writers are saying, They're saying, listen, I got a

short life that I'm living right now. And the reason that I'm writing this

letter to you is because eternity is about to happen, and matters that you're

ready for it. It desperately matters that you understand that when eternity happens,

it's going to happen to you too. And so we are choosing eternal things

over temporary things, eternal things over temporary things. The driving force in each

of these guys' lives was no longer the kingdom that they could build for themselves,

but the eternal one that they were sure to inherit. So I would

ask you this question, and I bet many of you have thought about this

question on some level, but I want you to think about it today.

What legacy are you leaving behind? What legacy are you leaving behind? Is

it your kids? Is it the property of is it you know, the

words that you say? Is it the things you accomplish? What legacy are

you leaving behind? I have a friend named Chris who does this thing called

life planning, and I told him, what's the first step? Talk to

me about you do it? And he said, the first step is you

get alan by yourself and you write your eulogy. Anybody ever done that.

My friend Chris has done it. You write your eulogy. What does that

mean you write what you would want people to say about you when you're dead

and gone. Think about that, what would you want people to say about

you at your funeral? And then after you write that eulogy, then you

live to fulfill it. Now, my friend Chris is a very accomplished man.

He's done a lot, accomplished a lot, earned a lot, he's

got a lot of money, he's got, you know, a lot of

clout. And he said, you know, when I wrote my eulogy,

there was nothing in it, not a single thing about anything I've accomplished.

There's nothing in it about anything I've done or said. Everything I wrote in

my eulogy is what I want people to say about me, And what I

want them to talk about is my character. I want them to talk about

the man that I am, the person that I am, not the things

that I've done. And I'll tell you I resonate with that. I'm gonna

die before some of you in the room and when you're at my funeral.

I hope that what people say about me is not boy he was a great

songwriter, but that guy sure good preach man. I hope that's not what

people say about me. I hope people say he was a friend. I

hope people say that guy in character, he was who he was on the

platform and off the platform. That guy loved Jesus, that guy loved his

family, that got poured into the eternal things of life. That guy lived

on mission. That's what I want people to say about me. I don't

care if you talk about my servants or my shoes. You can talk about,

but I want people to talk about my character. Amen. I want

people to talk about who I am. And don't you want that? So

what if you were to do that? What if you were to write out

what he would want people to say about you and then live to fulfill it.

Jesus said this. He said, wherever your treasure is there the desires

of your heart will be. Whatever matters the most to you. That's where

you're going to spend your time. That's where you're going to spend your mental

effort. Whatever matters the most to you. So what is it? What

is it? Your church's job is to equip you to live life on mission?

What does it take to live on mission? You have to choose eternal

over temporary. Amen, here's the last one. This is a painting I

found by Dolores de Velde. This is a depiction of one of my favorite

scenes in the Bible, Isaiah six. I'm gonna read it for us,

and then we're gonna unpack it, because there's this beautiful moment in Isaiah six

that I think sets the template for what it looks like to live on mission.

Look at this, Isaiah says this. It was the year King Uzziah

died that I saw the Lord. If you've got a Bible and a highlighter

or a pin circle star, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on

a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the temple attending him

or mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their

faces. With two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.

Can you imagine that? Can you imagine that image? Now? Think of

it as shack. We've talked about this. Verse three. They were calling

out to each other. This is what these two angels do for eternity.

One speaks to the other, He says, Holy, Holy, Holy,

is the Lord God Almighty. The whole earth is filled with his glory.

And the other angel says, I hear what you're saying. I'd like to

repeat back to you, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God

Money. They are blown away, They are eternally impressed by the majesty of

God. Their voices shook the temple to its foundations, and the entire building

was filled with smoke. And then I said, whoa. That's what we

would all say, whoa. But Isaiah means it a little different. Woe

unto me. He is immediately aware of his humanity in the presence of divinity,

immediately aware of the distance between what's good and what's bad about him and

what's majestic about God. He says, I'm doomed. I'm a sinful man.

I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips.

Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven's armies. And

then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken

from the altar with a pair of tongs. What would you do with that

moment? How did you respond? In that moment? There's a crazy angel

with six wings flying at you right, and he's got this tongue with hot

cold Oh, what's about to happen? He touched my lips and with it

he said, see this coal has touched your lips, and now your guilt

is removed, and your sins are forgiven beautiful and verse eight, and then

I heard the Lord. First he saw the Lord. And now he hears

the Lord, and he hears the Lord asking a question, not even to

him. It's an indirect question. I don't like those, Jesus, but

it's an indirect question. He says, whom should I send as a messenger

to this people? Who could I send as a messenger to this people?

Who will go for us? We'll go for us. God's asking this question

almost above Isaiah, and Isaiah says, here, I am send me.

I'll do whatever you ask me. I'll do it. I'm in let's go.

Maybe you've heard this quote before that God doesn't call the equipped, but

that he equips the call. Have you heard that? The concept of that

is God's not really all that interested in what you've accomplished in your life.

He can work with whatever you've got, and he can work with your little

to do a lot. God doesn't call the equipp he equips the call.

And so here's the question. Your church's job is to equip you to live

your life on mission. What does it take to live life on mission?

You're gonna have to choose willingness over readiness. You're gonna have to choose willingness

over readiness because I know I've heard some of you. I don't know how

to do that. No one's ever told me how to do that. I'm

not the right person for the job. Use somebody else. I'm not the

one right I've heard these excuses, are these comments, and I think they're

coming from a genuine place, because I believe you. You probably don't know

how to do it. But are you willing? Are you willing for God

to do something amazing in your life? Are you willing to watch him amaze

you by how he can do incredible things for you that you didn't know that

you could do. Choose willingness over readiness. Isaiah heard the voice of the

Lord who will go for us. He says, it's got to be me,

Send me. Has anybody ever read what happens next in that chapter?

Most pastors stop at verse eight because it's this beautiful moment. And so today

would you say to the Lord here I am send me. Has anybody ever

read verse nine? And on? Okay, my job is to equip you

for the work of the ministry. I'd like to read for you this beautiful

moment that God is about to send Isaiah to go. Do you're not ready?

I hope you're willing. You're not ready. I want you to see

this. Look at verse nine. He says, yes, good, Okay,

Go and say to these people, listen carefully, but do not understand.

Watch closely, but learn nothing. Harden the hearts of these people.

Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way they will not see with

their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts,

and turn to me for healing. They're not going to turn to me for

healing. Go tell them, Go tell them, Go, make sure and

tell them verse eleven. This is a great question, Isaiah says, Lord,

How long will this go on? That's the question I'd be asking.

How long am I supposed to do this and go on? This is tough,

Lord, And he replied, good question, Isaiah. Until their towns

are empty, until their houses are deserted, and the whole country is a

waste land. Until the Lord has sent everyone away, the entire land of

Israel lies desert. If even a tenth a remnant survived, it will be

invaded again and burned. But as a terrabinth or oak tree leaves a stump

when it is cut down, so israel stump will be a holy seed.

Oh okay, step you want me to go say that to them? Here?

I am Lord, send me. Good. Here's what you're gonna go

do. Man. Let me tell you something. If you think ministry is

glamorous, you're in the wrong church, my friend. If you think ministry

is this incredible, amazing experience, somebody has told you wrong. Ministry is

work, and there are moments that you have to do things that are hard,

and it's just all about am I willing? Am I willing to live

on mission? That here? I am Lord send me. Attitude is essential

to the Christian way of life. Is it easy? Hardly? Let me

tell you something. Putting this Sunday together not easy. A lot of work.

We did a lot of work to make sure that you were in this

room. And I'm so glad that it worked. Praise God, He's faithful.

You came amazing. God's been honored and glorified. We are still a

church. Okay, you know that old thing. Here's the church. Here's

this people open it up, and here's the people. They got it all

wrong. This is the church, this right here, you guys, this

is the Movement Church. And you ought to say, all right? So

is it easy? Hardly? Ever? Is it rewarding? Almost always?

Will you see the reward on this side of eternity? Maybe not? Maybe

not? But are you willing? I know you want to be ready?

But what matters is if you're willing. So your church's job is to equip

you. What does it take to live on mission Hugh's willingness over readiness.

I want to tell you that there are people. This message I'm giving today

is not a message about who you ought to be as a people, as

a church. It's a message who you already are. Our poor the people

who are a part of the Movement Church are already doing this. My friend

Jeff Rutter, who's on our Wisdom Table team and serves on the worship team

and on the teaching team, Jeff has invited every human being he has ever

met to come to the Movema Church. I'm pretty sure. I asked Jeff

the other day, have you invited anyone to church? Because I've run out

of people. I've invited the ball all right, good job, Jeff's living

on mission. Our friend Melissa Janis who was here last week and preached.

Melissa took on the challenge of becoming a special education teacher at Lewis Palmer Elementary

School. Guess how much Melissa knew about being a special education teacher when she

said, here I am send me zilch zero. Nothing. She is currently

in school while leading a family of y'all, four or five kids. Four

kids. She is a wife to a husband who's a handful and sconstantly being

spaghetti and sitting him on golf trips. We heard about this last week,

right, So Melissa's got her handsful. But she said, you know what,

I see a need and an opportunity for me to step in and to

help and to serve. And she's doing it. Has it been hard?

Yes? Has it been rewarding sometimes? Right? Is she going to see

all of the evidence of what the Lord's doing in her on this side of

heaven? Maybe not? Maybe not? Brett in Deborah Jones, my good

friend, Brett. I got to tell you, Brett. You know,

when I went and visited you guys in the hospital a few months ago,

I talked with the nurses after I walked out of the room, and they

were blown away by you and your wife and your faith and your belief in

Jesus. In the midst of one of the hardest seasons of her life,

Deborah was asking questions of the nurses and talking with them and praying for them.

That's who she is. She's living her life on mission from a hospital

bed. Okay, Karen Tussling, My friend Karin. She's the student on

the right there. All the other kids are a little shorter than her,

but she is the assistant principal at Chinook treil Millary Elementary School. I can

tell you from experience that the assistant principle deals with problem children because I was

one and I knew my assistant principal very well and she made an impact on

me. And so I know that you are making an impact on people,

shining the love and the light of Jesus in an incredible way. Our friend

Chuck mackenzie right here, and yes, that's a medium. He serves at

Lockheed Martin in Defense Contracting. It's a very buttoned up culture, a very

tight culture, and Chuck has an opportunity in a very unique space to shine

the love of Jesus, to share the light of Jesus in a real way.

Our friend Mike Pinston is a neuroscientist and a counselor, and his specialty

is isolating parts of the human brain that aren't functioning properly, isolating them and

fixing them so that people can actually think straight. It's an amazing thing that

he's done. In some of the technology that he's using he helped to invent.

Mike is shining the love and the life of Jesus. And if you've

spent more than five minutes with him, you have felt what it feels like

to be loved by my Pinston. My buddy Jack Rutter is in the house

today. Jack, that's the best picture I could find. I'd be brought.

I looked everywhere, man, I asked your mom for pictures, I

asked your sister for pictures. I asked your dad for pictures. This is

what they sent me, okay, Jack. One of my favorite things that

Jack has ever said to me, we were playing like five dollars poker one

night and he went all in on a terrible hand and he said, a

gambler, bro. And I've never forgotten. I think he might have won

that hand actually. So anyway, Jack is a high schooler and very recently

he was in a relationship with a young lady who didn't quite have the same

faith in Jesus that he did, and she wanted for him to make some

decisions with her that he didn't feel like fit his Christianity. So Jack ended

that relationship, and as people asked him about it, he told him why.

He shined the light of Jesus. He took a stand for his convictions

as a high schooler. He's living on mission. I'm proud of you,

Jack, And I want to tell you about this guy, Jeremy Robert.

Jeremy's over here. He's a doctor at Peak Med. And Jeremy is a

secret agent of sorts that I want to tell you about. This is a

true story. The week that we were disaffiliating from Vanguard and becoming the Movement

Church. Before that, I preached a sermon and y'all's family, the Rodbert

family was there. I even mentioned both the kids, Grant and Reagan,

and I said they had presidential names. If you were there, that they

may remember that. Okay, so they were there. I met them in

the lobby, but I did not remember Jeremy's face. Two weeks later,

I've got a terrible ingrown toenail. Anybody ever had a terrible ingrown toenail?

Come on, you are a full grown adult if you've had a terrible ingrown,

Todell, This thing was like digging into my skin. And I'm a

tennis player, and so I couldn't play tennis. Every step was hurting.

It was like, and I'm pitiful when I'm sick. I'm like, I

was like, it was a bad moment, So Danny. So, so

I go. I go to the doctor on a Tuesday afternoon and I go,

I need I need help. I'm I think I'm gonna it's it's over.

Just cut it off. I'm gonna die. Uh. And so doctor

Roderick took good care of me. I put my foot up on his knee

and he was he had a beautiful bedside manner, just beautiful, loving,

generous and kind. Took good care of my foot. He said, well,

here's some things that I would advise. I'll put some medication. And

I was like, thanks, Doc. That was pitiful. Was that pitiful?

Come on? I was pitiful? Now I didn't remember that he had

been to our church. I didn't remember his face, but he knew who

I was. And he didn't tell me that he knew who I was.

Part of it is because they weren't sure if they were coming back to our

churney. But anyway, so then we open up at the TLCA. It's

our first week, the week after we did the out of service and here

they come in and I said, hey, nice to meet you guys again.

We've been here before. Oh yeah, ok so I'm bad with that.

So that's why the visa bikes really helped me, because then I really

know you. Okay. Anyway, so they filled out a card. We

had lunch. Marissa showed up first to lunch, and I'm asking Marissa tell

me about her husband. What does he do? YadA YadA, And she

says, well, he's a doctor. Oh where's he practice at? Pete

med On North Kate? Yeah? Norooth, Kay what does he look like

because he's not there yet? Oh that's kind Let's second, your husband has

held my foot in his hands. And then here he walks in and I

go, I've got a bone to pick with you, and he goes,

yeah, how's that foot doing? And I was like, come on,

man, like you knew I was this whole time. Anyway, Jeremy Roderick

is a doctor who is loving and kind and generous, and I felt I'm

telling you, I don't know if you've ever felt ministered to by a doctor.

I felt ministered to that day by a doctor. He shared the love

of Jesus that day with me. I love you, Jereby. You're a

good man. Maxine Waters is here today. Where are you, Maxine?

Hey? Maxine. Maxine is the mother of the best hugger on the planet,

and that is Haley. And right now, because she's a single mom,

Maxine's primary mission in life is to be a mom for her daughter,

is to share the love of Jesus with her daughter. We are going to

baptize Haley this year. It's gonna happen. No, I'm confident of it.

I'm confident it's gonna happen. But you're doing an incredible job of leading

your sweet daughter. She is so incredible. She loves people so well,

and she has the right values. And it's because of the work that you're

doing loving her. You are living your life on mission. Last couple,

Barboa, maybe you know Barb maybe you know she hasn't been able to be

with us recently because Barb's mom and dad are older and they live in Phoenix,

and Barb decided that well, I really think the Lord decided that Barb's

mission was to go out to Phoenix and be a primary caregiver to her mom

and dad in their ailing years. Her dad recently passed and now she's out

there with her mom, which leaves Steve here by himself quite a lot.

And Steve is serving his wife and his kids and his grandchildre and he's also

leading our prayer team. These people are living on mission. I could go

on and on and tell you stories about people in our church who are living

their lives on mission. I'm so proud to be your pastor. I'm so

grateful to be a part of this community of faith. I'm proud of you,

and the Lord is too. But how have these people been able to

do this? How have they been able to live their life on mission?

I think it's because of this unhidden expectation. I think in a lot of

churches and a lot of churches, what you end up hearing from the front

is we need for you to help us do ministry. We have big visions

of how we're going to do ministry. We want you to come help us.

Man, that's really not the vibe of the Movement Church. We want

to help you do ministry. Whatever that looks like. You tell us,

tell us what you're passionate about, tell us what the Lord's stirring in your

heart, tell us where you feel like it's your mission field, and let

us help you to do that. What does it look like to live life

on? Mens? Choose providence over coincidence. There are no coincidences, only

God incidentss Choose eternal over temporary. What do you want them to say about

you when you're dead and gone? And choose willingness over readiness. Here I

have Lord, no matter how hard, no matter how exciting, no matter

how challenging, no matter what you ask me. I may not be ready,

but I'm willing. Amen, Let's get moving. So what's God leading
