  1. This might be the most to use quote in our SPMC sermons

  2. history. It's from CS Lewis, Chronicles

  3. of Narnia, and it's easy, safe, safe, said Mr. Beaver.

  4. Who said anything about safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he

  5. is good. He's not safe, but he is good.

  6. Of course Mr. Beaver is referring to Auslan who who who

  7. who was portrayed as God slash Christ figure in the books.

  8. He isn't safe, but he is good. That's who God is.

  9. And God never presents himself as safe.

  10. From the very beginning of scriptures, Adam and Eve, after

  11. they sin, they are cast out. Lot's wife turns around he will

  12. she wasn't supposed to and turns into a pillar of salt.

  13. Isaiah meets God and says woe to me for I have, you know, unclean

  14. lips. Peter meets Jesus on the boat,

  15. on his boat and says depart from me for I am a Sinner.

  16. God says to Moses, no one can see me and live.

  17. God is not safe, but he is good. In today's passage, David

  18. realizes both. He sees how unsafe God could be,

  19. and he also sees the goodness of God.

  20. And we're going to figure out how both of them could be true

  21. at the same time. So we're going to answer the

  22. question, how can sinful people experience the presence of God?

  23. How can sinful people experience the presence of God #1 recognize

  24. we often approach Him the wrong way.

  25. We must recognize how we approach Him the wrong way.

  26. If you have your Bibles, please turn to Second Samuel chapter 6.

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  27. Otherwise it will be posted behind me as well.

  28. I'll be reading one through 7 for now, from the last sermon

  29. till today's sermon, and it's only one week for us.

  30. But in the story, about 10 to 15 years have passed.

  31. David is no longer running from Saul, but he has become king.

  32. In chapter 5 he becomes king and this is chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  33. So he just becomes king of all over Israel and and this is the

  34. first thing he does. OK chapter 6 verse one, David

  35. again assembled all the fit young men in Israel. 30,000 He

  36. and all his troops set out to bring the ark of God from Baal

  37. Judah. The ark bears the name, the name

  38. of the Lord of armies who is enthroned between the cherubim.

  39. They set the Ark of God on a new cart and transported from

  40. Abinadab's house, which was on the hill.

  41. Uzza and Ahil, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the cart and

  42. brought it with the Ark of God from Abinadab's house on the

  43. hill. Ahil walked in front of the ark.

  44. David and the whole House of Israel were dancing before the

  45. Lord with all kinds of four wood instruments, liars, harps,

  46. tambourine systems and symbols. When they came out to Nakon's

  47. threshing floor, Uzza reached out to the Ark of God and took

  48. hold of it. Because the oxen has stumbled.

  49. Then the Lord's anger burned against Uzza, and God struck him

  50. dead on the spot for his irreverence, and he died there

  51. next to the ark of God. I know right away your mind

  52. might be wondering, OK, why did he have to die before we get

  53. there? We got, let's start from the

  54. beginning. If you go to this, go to the

  55. verses before this, the ark represents God's presence.

  56. This is the same ark if you watch the movie Indiana Jones,

  57. that's the one that he's looking for.

  58. The ark is basically a big box and it has 10 commandments in

  59. there along with Aaron's rod. It has a part of manna from

  60. Moses time. Ark was not actually just a

  61. symbol of God's presence. God's presence was actually

  62. there. His presence is manifested in a

  63. concentrated form. So there's a greater Prince of

  64. God on the ark than anywhere else.

  65. God is everywhere, but sometimes he chooses a specific spot for

  66. his more intense presence, and the ark was that place.

  67. Chapter 5. David becomes king and the first

  68. thing he does, the first act of being him being a king, is to

  69. bring the Ark back to Jerusalem. For the past 40-50 years, the

  70. Ark was kind of near the Philistine Israel border.

  71. Saw this entire time he was king, he just left it there even

  72. before Saw Eli's sons actually because of them, it kind of

  73. ended up there. Kind of shows that Saul really

  74. didn't care about God's presence or worship or anything like

  75. that. And David here does the right

  76. thing. He's absolutely right in this.

  77. He says we need the presence of God and he brings the ark back

  78. to Jerusalem. This was his first order of

  79. action, and it should also be our first order of action in our

  80. lives that we have the presence of God.

  81. We don't need any more. We don't need just information

  82. about God. We need God's presence.

  83. Without it, we are constantly trying to build our own

  84. identity, carry our own burdens and and really secure our own

  85. lives without God's presence. We're we're anxious, we're

  86. exhausted. We're never sure if we're

  87. enough. And the Bible says, you know,

  88. really, you don't need anything else.

  89. What we actually need is God himself.

  90. What I found is that what I just explained, we need the praise of

  91. God. I really need to convince

  92. people. I think most people will say,

  93. especially if you're Christian and you're coming here like,

  94. yeah, well, obviously that's why I'm here.

  95. That's why I came to worship. The problem is really the desire

  96. that's kind of innate in us as Christians.

  97. But it's the approach. It's the approach in in how to

  98. be in Prince of God. Let's examine Ouza.

  99. OK, It's this is one of the passages where people get turned

  100. off about our faith. They read stuff like this and

  101. they're like, see, This is why I'm not a Christian.

  102. This is why I don't read the Bible.

  103. There's one thing wrong and boom, God zaps him and then he's

  104. dead. And and these are parts of the

  105. Bible that if you're not believing, friends came up to

  106. you and like explain this and you're like, oh, do I have to it

  107. it? It's a difficult thing to

  108. explain, but let's try. Let's try to figure out why God

  109. might do such a thing. They are bring carrying the ark

  110. back to church women and it is a celebration and verse one it

  111. says David is bringing 30,000 men, which means they're not

  112. going to war. They're not afraid that they're

  113. going to get attacked or anything like that.

  114. They wanted like a like a professional, a parade.

  115. Just imagine 30,000 men, soldiers and other people too

  116. right People play instruments and and carrying the ark of God

  117. back to Jerusalem. It's supposed to be a

  118. celebration. Apparently it was at this guy

  119. named Ooza's house or his binnadab, his dad's house for

  120. somewhat years. And, and so so they've been

  121. taking care of it and, and they are in charge of of kind of

  122. bringing the art back to Israel. Along the way, the oxen stumble

  123. and Ooza reaches out only to prevent it from falling to the

  124. ground. Then maybe it's a bumpy Rd.

  125. It's shaking and Ooza grabs the ark and boom God strikes him

  126. dead. I know that sounds harsh and

  127. even unnecessary but try to understand this.

  128. This is the issue with Oozes approach.

  129. He has a casual view of God. The problem is not that he

  130. touched the ark and it was just arbitrary rule that God made.

  131. When I was in elementary, when the bell rang, you have to

  132. freeze. My son Micah and Maddie, they

  133. went to the same elementary as me.

  134. And my God, when he got a detention and I said what

  135. happened, he said he moved for two seconds after the bell.

  136. I did not get mad at him at all. You know why?

  137. Because I got detention for the same thing 30 years ago.

  138. It's not a stupid rule like that.

  139. It's a random rule God says. You know what?

  140. I don't want anyone touching this.

  141. Someone touches it, bam, you're dead.

  142. The problem with this is Luza, even though he had to arc for 20

  143. years, he really has no idea how holy God is and how sinful he

  144. is. He has a low view of sin and a

  145. high view of self, Low view of God.

  146. You know, the, the, the, the laws that God gave about

  147. handling the ark. We're very clear.

  148. OK, you actually, they weren't even supposed to put in another

  149. cart. That wasn't allowed.

  150. So they weren't, they weren't supposed to do that.

  151. Only Levites, a tribe or it's a priestly tribe.

  152. Only they could handle it because they're trained in it.

  153. And certainly nobody could touch it.

  154. Luzza doesn't follow any of that and he touches the ark.

  155. See, from the beginning of time, God has been trying to teach his

  156. people about this reality. He's saying any other God, all

  157. the other gods that were worshipped at this time, they

  158. were the same. You were to impress God, have a

  159. perhaps a 30,000 soldier processional for God.

  160. Do crazy sacrifices for God. Impress them enough where God

  161. says, OK, I accept you, you've shown enough.

  162. But the true God is saying that's not how I operate.

  163. It's not about impressing me, it's not about performing front

  164. of me. It's about my presence, the

  165. presence of God and man. The only thing that comes

  166. between US and God is sin. That's why from day one God was

  167. always serious about sin because that is the only thing keeping

  168. us away from God. So he gave clear instructions

  169. how to deal with it. The one obstacle for us to get

  170. through God. God gives us clear instructions.

  171. Once a year the high priest goes in to the Holy of Holies,

  172. sprinkles blood into the ark and and man sins are.

  173. It wasn't technically forgiven, it was delayed.

  174. The punishment was delayed all the way until Christ dies for

  175. us. Jesus pays for our sins every

  176. year. God teaches a way for people to

  177. deal with their sins so they could have the presence of God.

  178. Luza didn't just break a rule, he was rejecting the core of the

  179. gospel. When he touched the arc, there

  180. was assumption on his part. His assumption was my hand is

  181. cleaner than the dirt. Imagine there is some dog poop

  182. on your hands. I say this because it recently

  183. happened. I was with actually, you know,

  184. Mike Albert practice baseball. It was at like their friend's

  185. backyard. They have a batting cage and and

  186. there's poop every worse, they have a dog back there too.

  187. And you know, with the bag, we clean up and then we and then we

  188. practice and there was a little bit of poop in my hands.

  189. So I have to wash it and all that.

  190. But imagine the poop was in my hand and I was, I don't know, I

  191. was hanging out, right? I don't normally do that.

  192. But let's just say I have poop in my hands and Micah has his

  193. water bottle and then he's about to drop it.

  194. Would I go Micah let me save her water bottle.

  195. Here you go. No, I let it drop because my

  196. hand is dirtier than the grass. There's assumption that Ooza

  197. makes that I am. My hands are not that dirty.

  198. My sin is not that bad. There's assumption that Ooza

  199. makes that God is not that holy. I could touch the ark, at least

  200. the dirt, it's not sinful. At least Jesus didn't have to

  201. die for the dirt. Dirt you could wipe off.

  202. But God is very serious about our sin.

  203. He's saying that sin problem we cannot figure out on our own.

  204. Even if I explained this to many of us that will still not

  205. understand. I don't know Pastor Tim, but

  206. Uzza had good intentions. Why?

  207. Why did God have to be so severe?

  208. Unfortunately, good intentions don't override God's holiness.

  209. God is so holy he cannot intermingle with sinful people.

  210. He just can't. It's not his nature.

  211. It seems harsh, but God has always been harsh when it comes

  212. to sin. God is harsh to the point where

  213. if you do not accept the gospel, you don't go to heaven.

  214. That's harsh. When sin came to to the Garden

  215. of Eden, they were kicked out. That's harsh.

  216. God's been harsh with sin because that's that important.

  217. Ultimately, he sent his Son to die for our sins.

  218. That's why he didn't want us to take it lightly.

  219. He didn't want us to have good intentions and go to God saying,

  220. God, I did all these great things for you, now accept me.

  221. You have great intentions, but God is saying that is not

  222. enough. Lord, I've done so much for you,

  223. You must accept me. That's good intentions, but it

  224. is not enough. And David, he sees all of this

  225. happening before him. He sees Ooza die.

  226. And then in verse 9, do we have verse 92 slides down.

  227. David feared the Lord that day. There was fear in David and he

  228. says, how can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?

  229. Now he's saying I'm sinful. How can God's presence come to

  230. me? He's fearful.

  231. But God doesn't leave David there.

  232. He provides a way which leads us to point #2 Remember, it is not

  233. just that God is unsafe, He is good .2 We can only experience

  234. God's presence through His provision of grace.

  235. Let's read verses 11:50. So he was not willing to bring

  236. the ark of the Lord to the city of David.

  237. Instead, he diverted to the House of Obed Adam or Edom of

  238. Gath. The ark of the Lord remained in

  239. his house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed Edom and

  240. his whole family. It was reported to King David.

  241. The Lord has blessed Obed Edom's family and all that belongs to

  242. him because of the ark of God. So David went and had the ark of

  243. God brought up from Obed Edom's house to the city of David with

  244. rejoicing. OK, I don't know if this is

  245. messed up, but David's like, Oh no, the ark kill somebody, let's

  246. drop it off of somebody else's house and that it remains in the

  247. house for three months. Same presence of God, same ark.

  248. It kills Ooza. The same ark blesses Obed Edom

  249. and his family. How is that possible?

  250. It's God dangerous or is He good?

  251. You know Mr. Beaver already gave us the correct answer.

  252. He is both. He's not safe and He is good.

  253. He is dangerous in His Holiness, yet life giving in His grace.

  254. Let me put it this way, God is not safe to sinners who approach

  255. Him on their own terms, but God is safe to sinners who are

  256. covered by His grace. Oba Edom's name is listed in

  257. First Chronicles and it turns out he was a Levite, which means

  258. he was trained in how to deal with the ark.

  259. It means he he had a proper respect for it and he followed

  260. all the rules. He knew how to handle the ark in

  261. God's way. And what is the result of that?

  262. It says with rejoicing. David sees this and he says

  263. something clicks. Ah, it's not that God is just

  264. unsafe, but he's also good. He also brings blessings and he

  265. brings it back with rejoicing. And we see more of that next

  266. verses. Let's go to the next one, 13 to

  267. 16. When those carrying the ark of

  268. the Lord advanced just six steps, He sacrificed.

  269. That's key. We'll come back to it.

  270. He sacrificed an ox and fan calf.

  271. David was dancing with all his might before the Lord, wearing a

  272. linen effing. He and the whole House of Israel

  273. were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts.

  274. And the sound of the ram's horns.

  275. There's a lot of celebration going on.

  276. As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David,

  277. Saul's daughter Mikhail looked down from the window and saw

  278. David leaping and dancing before the Lord.

  279. And she despised him in her heart.

  280. So we see two groups of people a little contrasting here.

  281. OK, so David says, OK, God is good, now let's bring it back.

  282. And the ark is this time carried properly and within 6 steps

  283. sacrifices are made. To me, that is proof that David

  284. saw this correctly. Let me explain.

  285. Why does God require sacrifice? It's not.

  286. Again, the other gods require sacrifice.

  287. Because it's like, pay me, I'm going to protect you.

  288. It's like the mafia, I'll protect you, but you got to pay

  289. up. But when it comes to our God, it

  290. is not a payment sacrifice, it is it it points to Jesus.

  291. Sacrifice is not saying let me pay you back.

  292. Sacrifice signals the right approach to worship, right

  293. approach to his presence. Sacrifice is saying I deserve

  294. judgement, but another takes my place.

  295. That's the only way into God's presence.

  296. Not by effort, not by just sincere heart, not by emotion,

  297. but by substitution. That's the whole point of the

  298. story of David and Goliath, right?

  299. That is not that be brave like David.

  300. No, it means we couldn't defeat Goliath.

  301. So somebody else had to step in to defeat Goliath.

  302. We needed a substitute. David worshipped God and made a

  303. sacrifice, saying we deserve this, I deserve the punishment.

  304. But this punishment now goes to the sacrifice.

  305. We need a substitute. We need a substitute in Jesus

  306. Christ to defeat sin for us. And David figures this out and

  307. the result is always great joy. When you realize what the grace

  308. of the gospel is, what a gift of salvation is, the result is

  309. always great joy. And look at this.

  310. This is the king of Israel. It says here he was dancing with

  311. all his might. He's dancing so hard that it

  312. says in later, we didn't read it, but later verses that some

  313. of his skin was showing, which is a great no no to somebody in

  314. somebody in the royal family and his wife sees him and says she

  315. says she despised him in her heart.

  316. Now why do we see two different responses?

  317. Before this moment, David is afraid of God, but after this

  318. moment, when he realizes the grace of God, he is dancing

  319. before the Lord. He is free, he is humble, he

  320. doesn't care about reputation, dignity, image.

  321. This is true worship coming out. But his wife, she doesn't have

  322. joyful worship. She's embarrassed of her husband

  323. and later tells tells her husband, you have embarrassed

  324. yourself. You have embarrassed me.

  325. This is David's response in 21 and 22 and David reply to Macau.

  326. It was before the Lord who chose me over your father and his

  327. whole family to appoint me a ruler over the Lord's people,

  328. Israel. I will dance before the Lord,

  329. and I will dishonor myself and humble myself even more.

  330. Perhaps the NIV version is more memorable to to us.

  331. It says I will be even more undignified than this.

  332. I will dance before the Lord. I will even be even more

  333. undignified than this. Of course, David Crowder and his

  334. band made a lot of money singing about that true worship, true

  335. experience of God, experiencing the presence of God.

  336. It makes you think less about yourself.

  337. You you care more about what God has done for us.

  338. You see what Jesus did and what he has accomplished to the to

  339. the cross. For people who have not

  340. experienced grace, who have not experienced the gospel, you care

  341. more about yourself, yourself image, your reputation.

  342. So for me, Cal, it's like, well, I'm royal family, I'm the queen.

  343. I got to be dignified. I have a reputation.

  344. And here's my husband showing his belly button because he's

  345. dancing like a commoner. But David, he says I will

  346. dishonor myself and humble myself.

  347. You know why? He says humble myself.

  348. People who receive grace, they naturally become humble because

  349. they knew they didn't deserve it.

  350. There's a Korean player in the Dodgers, and I root for him.

  351. And he was part of the championship team last year, but

  352. he did nothing. Not one hit, not nothing.

  353. He was a pinch runner a couple times.

  354. And even that he almost made him.

  355. He made a mistake, almost got out, but he still gets a ring.

  356. I don't know him personally, but I bet you he's not going around

  357. like, hey, I'm a champion. I think he's like, I'm glad to

  358. be a champion. Even though I was just on the

  359. roster and did almost nothing, Man, I'm glad I'm a champion.

  360. He knows he had no part in winning that trophy or that

  361. ring. If you know that it was because

  362. of somebody else that you received something, it makes you

  363. humble. And what humility does is it

  364. allowed David to worship God with all his might to the poor

  365. people like you, worshiping God like a commoner, like a servant.

  366. Mikel doesn't know what joyful worship is.

  367. She's worrying about her reputation, her status, her

  368. performance. You embarrassed me, husband.

  369. This is probably something you could do at home or in your

  370. community groups sharing. But if you care a lot about what

  371. people think about you, that means your attention is on

  372. yourself. That means the grace of the

  373. gospel has not impacted you in a deep way yet.

  374. Or it has in the past, but you have forgotten it a little bit.

  375. As grace changes you, the attention of the focus goes away

  376. towards others, towards helping others, towards God, towards

  377. missions, and you start getting excited and energized to see

  378. what God is doing in your, in the world and in your heart.

  379. Something to think about. We all need the presence of God,

  380. but thankfully we don't need the ark anymore.

  381. When Jesus died on the cross, the separation between man and

  382. God was removed. Literally the curtain that

  383. divided the Holy of Holies where the ark is and everyone else,

  384. that curtain it really ripped. Now God's presence lives in us.

  385. You are the ark, the Holy Spirit lives in you.

  386. And if you are a Christian, if you have salvation, if you have

  387. said Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior, then God is safe.

  388. He is your mighty fortress. He is safe to those who know

  389. that they are sinners and that they need a Savior in Jesus

  390. Christ. Main point, we can only

  391. experience God's presence through His provision of grace

  392. rather than our own performance. Let's pray.
