  1. OK, so we are finishing up our series on the life of David we

  2. have today and we have two more left and next two sermons will

  3. be dealing with actually end of his life.

  4. Today is probably the last kind of event that that is well

  5. known. Today's sermon is on David and

  6. Bathsheba. It's about how he commits

  7. adultery and murder. Let that sink in for a moment.

  8. Adultery and murder. We've been just talking about

  9. for weeks how wonderful David is.

  10. Last week's sermon was how David showed the kindness of God that

  11. has said of God to somebody who did not deserve it, how his

  12. kindness directly points to the gospel.

  13. And two chapters later we're talking about adultery and

  14. murder. This is, after all, the man

  15. after God's own heart. This is the king that God chose.

  16. This is the man who trusted in God fighting a giant named

  17. Goliath. And now adultery and murder.

  18. And we see this kind of things all the time.

  19. One of my heroes of the faith, Philip Yancey, who wrote What's

  20. So Amazing about Grace? He just had a falling recently,

  21. Ravi, Ravi Zacharias, who faithfully defended our faith

  22. for decades. And several of really people who

  23. I consider to be role models in the faith, they went from

  24. faithful men to destroying their life with sin.

  25. And that's the question we want to answer today.

  26. How can a faithful person like David fall into destructive sin?

  27. Well, number one is because we think we can control sin and we

  28. can manage it as we're not that bad.

  29. Let's read Second Samuel Chapter 11 one through 4 for now.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  30. Oh now it's OK, I'll just turn around Arena.

  31. In the spring, when kings March out to war, David sent joy with

  32. his officers and all Israel. They destroy the Ammonites and

  33. besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.

  34. One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on

  35. the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman

  36. bathing, a very beautiful woman. So David sent someone to inquire

  37. about her, and he said, isn't this Bathsheba, daughter of

  38. Eliam and wife of Uriah, that he's like.

  39. David sent messengers to get her, and when she came home to

  40. him, he slept with her. Now, she had just been purifying

  41. herself from her uncleanliness. Afterward, she returned home.

  42. Oh, yeah, It works. OK, It works.

  43. I see it. Yeah.

  44. Thank you. Thank you.

  45. Although the king is not expected to be necessarily every

  46. part of battle. But it seems like, according to

  47. verse one, it says when kings March out to war.

  48. This is a time when I guess kings did March out to war.

  49. And we know that this is what he should have been doing because

  50. it says here, but but David remained in Jerusalem.

  51. He did not go to war instead, but David remained in Jerusalem.

  52. So why did David stay behind? Was he scared?

  53. Of course not. He won many battles.

  54. He defeated giants. There's no way he's scared.

  55. He didn't go because he was actually winning every battle.

  56. David is at the height of his power and everything is going

  57. his way. Kind of like you start your own

  58. business and it goes so well. After a while, you just hire

  59. some managers, just kind of check in here and there.

  60. And it seems like that's what he's doing.

  61. He's checking in here and there and he's not actively involved.

  62. And this where David is at, at the height of his power,

  63. comfortable, settled in. This is actually a very

  64. dangerous place to be being settled in, comfortable, kind of

  65. doing the cruise control of life.

  66. That is a very dangerous place to be.

  67. And we know this because immediately he's comfortable.

  68. He's walking around his palace. In verse 21 evening, David got

  69. up from his bed and stroll around the roof of the palace

  70. and he saw a woman bathing, a very beautiful woman.

  71. Now, let me just note that Bathsheba was she was doing a

  72. purification ritual. It was actually she was doing

  73. something religious. It wasn't a woman just kind of

  74. flaunting herself in public. They I read that the bath, it

  75. was often on the roof, but it was well covered.

  76. Really the only person who could see her was somebody who was in

  77. a really high place, which is the palace where David lived.

  78. So she was certainly not trying to seduce anyone, but David

  79. certainly is not the victim here.

  80. David was walking around kind of bored, and then a naked woman

  81. caught his eye. See David's danger?

  82. But it wasn't just that he he was lustful.

  83. It was more so combination of success and an absence of trial.

  84. See, trials often awaken our dependence on God and comfort

  85. can lowest low person to spiritual sleep.

  86. He wasn't afraid of sin. He wasn't guarding his heart.

  87. And oftentimes that is where spiritual danger is most

  88. present. You know, you don't fall asleep

  89. through middle of storm. You fall asleep in Hawaii in a

  90. nice beach when your guard is down against sin.

  91. Step by step you may be walking into destruction and you don't

  92. even know it because you don't think you could fall.

  93. Things are going too well, so you just go along with it.

  94. There is a progression of sin and David doesn't even notice

  95. it. Look at verse 2.

  96. He first saw when you're walking around and then you accidentally

  97. see a naked woman. That is actually not sin.

  98. That is actually not his fault, unless he was looking for a

  99. naked woman, but it doesn't say that he saw a woman bathing.

  100. It's only bad when you keep looking.

  101. So he saw and then verse three, he sent, OK, there's a

  102. progression that's worse. And then and then he he sent

  103. someone to inquire, right. And then he sent somebody to get

  104. her in The Hebrew is directly translated.

  105. He took her and then of course, the worst part, he slept with

  106. her. He saw, he sent, he took, and he

  107. slept with her. In the middle of this, he even

  108. got a reminder who the husband was because remember he said

  109. someone to inquire about her. And then he said, isn't this

  110. Bathsheba? Isn't that the wife of Uriah?

  111. So Uriah is mentioned in other parts of the Bible.

  112. So you actually Uriah is somebody David would have known

  113. very well there. There was a time when he was

  114. running away from Saul and some of his warriors kind of rescued

  115. David from from danger. And Uriah was one of the men

  116. that was part of the rescue team.

  117. So Uriah has been faithful servant from day one, before

  118. David even became king. The servant goes, wait a minute,

  119. isn't that woman Uriah's wife? And he just says, come, bring

  120. her to me. There is a progression of sin

  121. and he just keeps going along. The vast majority of us are

  122. sitting here thinking, well, you know what, I won't do that.

  123. This will never happen to me. I can never get there.

  124. If you are thinking to that to yourself, I'm sorry to say, but

  125. you just put yourself in the front of the line of spiritual

  126. danger. The person who says that will

  127. never be me is the person in danger of doing the exact same

  128. and sin. See, because sin rarely happens

  129. with just just sudden fall. Nobody goes from faithful

  130. servant and boom, destructive Sinner.

  131. There's steps to it, and when things are comfortable, when

  132. your guard is down, you take those steps and you don't even

  133. know you're going in that direction.

  134. Because comfort, success, it makes us prideful and we ignore

  135. the signs. There's a progression.

  136. Look, scent, take slept. Why not fight it at look?

  137. Why not? Why didn't he just fight the

  138. scent at look, what we have to do is check even the little

  139. smallest movements of our hearts and we cannot leave our hearts

  140. unchecked. The famous quote by John Owen,

  141. be killing sin or it will be killing you.

  142. He's saying we cannot just control sin, manages sin.

  143. He says we have to fight it. We have to be alert.

  144. We have to be intentional about it, but when things are, you

  145. have a crazy season of life and things are settling down, a

  146. little uncomfortable, we start fighting sin and things just

  147. creep up. We forget that we have to be

  148. constantly suspicious of our own hearts.

  149. When you're angry, when things are unsettled, we have to be

  150. first be suspicious of our own hearts.

  151. Is this something me? Before you start blaming others,

  152. you got to be suspicious of your own heart first.

  153. But we don't do that when we're comfortable and then we let them

  154. grow and our hearts unchecked. Our only hope is sneaking out

  155. our sin and going to God in repentance.

  156. Our only hope is that to ask the Holy Spirit that we'll be

  157. sensitive to the warning signs. Our only hip hope is to be alert

  158. against sin at all times. OK, so how can we go from

  159. faithful to destructive sin? We think we can control sin, and

  160. we put our guards down #2 we think we can keep sin private.

  161. We think we can keep sin private.

  162. Let's go to the next passage, chapter verse 5 to 11.

  163. So. All right, it's stuck, I'll just

  164. turn around. Oh Nope, the woman conceived and

  165. sent to word to inform David I am pregnant.

  166. Let's stop there for real quick. So after 4 verses, right, David

  167. might have seemed like OK, it was a one and done, it was a one

  168. night stand and OK, nobody knows about it.

  169. I'm good all right. In fact, he might have even felt

  170. like he felt maybe good about himself because most kings right

  171. when they take a woman, it doesn't matter if she's married

  172. or not, it's his woman. Now other kings would not let

  173. that woman go back to her husband.

  174. So maybe David's like, OK, well, you know, maybe I'm I'm I'm

  175. better than others. And and he thought it was going

  176. to stop right there. But that cover up is no longer

  177. possible. It's no longer A1 night stand.

  178. It's no longer a closed chapter because verse 5 she sends word

  179. to David, I am pregnant. Oh, oh, Plan B OK, so now he has

  180. to do more things to cover this up.

  181. So David sent orders to Joab. He's the commander in in the in

  182. the war. Send me Uriah the hicite, the

  183. husband. So Joab sent Uriah to David.

  184. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops

  185. are doing and how the war was going.

  186. Then he said to Uriah, go down to your house and wash your

  187. feet. So Uriah left the palace and a

  188. gift from the king followed him. OK next.

  189. But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master

  190. servants. He did not go down to his house.

  191. When it was reported to David, Uriah didn't go home.

  192. David questioned Uriah, haven't you just come from a journey?

  193. Why didn't you go home? Uri answered David, the Ark, the

  194. Israel. Israel and Judah are dwelling in

  195. tents and my master Joab and the soldiers are camping in the open

  196. field. How can I enter my house to eat

  197. and drink and sleep with my wife?

  198. As surely as you live and by your life, I will not do this.

  199. So David has a clever plan. OK, let's bring home Uriah.

  200. Have him sleep with his wife and then it will be his.

  201. People will think it's his baby. OK, all the cover up will be

  202. complete. A little problem.

  203. This guy is too faithful. He's like my soldiers, my my

  204. commander. Everyone is on the in in the in

  205. the field, in a tent. How can I go home to my wife?

  206. How can I be in comfort? And then we didn't read it but

  207. the next few verses David tries again but this time he gets him

  208. drunk. But same thing Uriah just

  209. drinking he does do, but he sleeps still on the floor.

  210. It still doesn't work. He just thinks if I keep this

  211. thin hidden I will be OK. If nobody finds out I should be

  212. good. So now he has to go to Plan C,

  213. and now it won't be pretty. We're not going to read it, but

  214. perhaps it's a story that many of us know.

  215. He sends Uriah back to the battlefield with the letter, a

  216. letter to the commander Joab in. In it.

  217. It instructs Joab to send Uriah to to the front of the word.

  218. There is most fierce battle. Essentially, David is arranging

  219. Uriah to die. Adultery now became murder, and

  220. it's not possible to send one man in battle.

  221. It's too obvious. It's too fishy for for a king to

  222. say send Uriah to conquer the city of I like.

  223. You can't send one man, you have to send a group of men.

  224. All of them went to battle just so they could die, and so the

  225. King's sins could be covered up. If you find yourself hiding sin,

  226. if there's something going in your life and you're ashamed and

  227. you don't want anyone to know and nobody knows about it, that

  228. is the most dangerous place to be.

  229. Because we know from Scriptures that sin grows in darkness.

  230. And when I mean darkness, I mean letting nobody in, not not

  231. asking anyone for prayer, not asking anyone for support, not

  232. confessing it to anyone. James, 15, says after desire has

  233. conceived, it gives birth to sin.

  234. And when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.

  235. Sin doesn't just stay there. It grows in darkness, and

  236. darkness is not letting anyone in, including God.

  237. Your sin grows in darkness. It's hidden.

  238. Give it enough time. Keep it a secret long enough.

  239. It will grow out of control so much that it will eventually be

  240. revealed. Somebody will find out.

  241. There's a long list of celebrity Christians who have fallen

  242. because the sins have gotten out of control, and by the time we

  243. read about it or hear about it, it's just crazy.

  244. If you find yourself hiding even the smallest of sins, like

  245. secretly at home, you, you're angry or you yell at your wife

  246. or a husband and nobody knows about it, or you have a lust

  247. issue and you let nobody in, They will only grow in darkness.

  248. Let other people in. We are called the children of

  249. the light, right? Let other believers in.

  250. Let them pray for you. Let them support you.

  251. However, in this story, you might think, OK, but you know

  252. that's exactly what happened. Like, he like, OK, but what

  253. happened to David? He planned to have Yorak killed.

  254. And he does die. And it seems like it's covered

  255. up. Well, from this point on, David

  256. will no longer live in peace. David will spend the rest of his

  257. reign as a king dealing dealing with violence, rebellion and

  258. really deep personal sorrow. I mean, he has family members,

  259. you know, rape and murder, and then his son tries to kill him

  260. and he's running away. Rest baby dies and rest of his

  261. life is no longer peaceful. Even if you didn't get caught,

  262. it doesn't mean you succeeded. Ah, it's all covered up.

  263. I'm good now. There is always consequence of

  264. sin. Always consequence of sin.

  265. The restless nights, the anxiety, no peace.

  266. You're irritable, impatient. Sin changes you.

  267. But even if nobody finds out, guess what?

  268. Let's go to the last two, verse 26 and 27.

  269. When Uriah's wife heard that her husband Uriah had died, she

  270. mourned for him. When the time of mourning ended,

  271. David had her brought to his house.

  272. She became his wife and born him a son.

  273. However, this is the key. The Lord considered what David

  274. had done to be evil. The Lord knows.

  275. God knows about it. Nothing could be hidden from God

  276. when you're in sin. Yeah, and you have hidden sin

  277. and it's growing. You have the separation from

  278. God. There's always consequences.

  279. As I was reading the story and and thinking about David, it's

  280. really like a one of those depressing Hollywood rich and

  281. famous stories. Oh, this person got rich and

  282. famous and successful. Oh, but he did drugs and died.

  283. The end. That's not all these stories

  284. end. I saw that movie about Queen.

  285. Oh, successful, so talented. Oh, he got as and died.

  286. I didn't see Michael Jackson's story that's out in theaters.

  287. I'm assuming that's the same. Oh, it's rich and famous.

  288. And then he started buying up animals and speaking to monkeys

  289. and then he died. Those those stories all end the

  290. same. It's tragic.

  291. David kills Goliath and becomes king.

  292. He's a hero. Oh, but he commits all adultery,

  293. murder, and his life spirals down from then.

  294. His child dies, murder in the family.

  295. Absalom tries to kill him. The end.

  296. And really the next sermon, we're going to skip Absalon

  297. because we've talked about it quite a bit.

  298. Next week's sermon is toward his like, end, End.

  299. It's like Bathsheba and then story almost ends.

  300. The sad thing is our life is no different than David because we

  301. deserve the same ending. Yeah, we're not adulterers and

  302. murderers perhaps, But you know, Jesus raises the bar for

  303. adultery and murder in the New Testament.

  304. He said if you have hatred in your heart, that is murder.

  305. If you have lust in your heart, that is adultery.

  306. So yes, we are in fact adulterers and murderers, and we

  307. do deserve the same tragic ending.

  308. We do deserve the consequence of sin, the punishment for sin.

  309. But for God's people, it is actually not one of those

  310. Hollywood movies that end tragically for us.

  311. The Gospel offers a rescue, a rescue from sad endings.

  312. And Davis finds that rescue as well.

  313. Yes, his life was in turmoil. Consequence of sin cannot be

  314. avoided, but we know somewhere along the line, his heart was

  315. renewed, he was restored. Let's look at Psalm 51.

  316. This is, I know that most people know the NIV version of this

  317. passage. And you know there are songs

  318. written about this. But God created me a clean heart

  319. for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

  320. Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy

  321. Spirit from me. Restore the joy of salvation to

  322. me and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.

  323. This is written after Bathsheba incident and after he becomes

  324. repentant of his sins. David is his sin and he clings

  325. on to God and begs God, Lord, I'm a Sinner.

  326. I want a new heart. I want a clean heart.

  327. And he says the last thing I want is for your presence to

  328. depart from me because God's presence departed from Saul.

  329. He's like, I don't want that. I want your presence.

  330. And Lord, because of sin, I am devastated.

  331. I am sad. There's tragedy in my family.

  332. But he says I want you to restore the joy of salvation.

  333. It doesn't matter what you've done.

  334. It doesn't matter what sins you've been hiding.

  335. Right now, God offers a rescue plan.

  336. God offers a rescue from sad endings.

  337. What He offers you is a clean heart.

  338. What He offers you is that He will be.

  339. He will have your His presence in you through the Holy Spirit.

  340. And when you come to Him in repentance, the joy of salvation

  341. will be restored in your life. It's true that there is no

  342. hiding from sin, but there is a safe place for our guilt.

  343. It's the cross of Christ. David eventually found mercy in

  344. God's forgiveness. Our hope, our only hope, is that

  345. Jesus died for all our all our sins.

  346. And his mercy is available for all of us, for all of our sins.

  347. Main point Destructive sin grows when we try to control or hide

  348. it, but mercy is found when we bring it into the light before

  349. God. Let's take time to pray.
