  1. Hi, this is Dave Olson. I'm the senior leader of

  2. Heartland Church located in Ankeny, IA.

  3. I hope the following message challenges, encourages, and

  4. ultimately changes you. Thanks for joining us.

  5. I'm thrilled to be here today. I gave Pastor Dave a hard time

  6. that I was going to talk to him about his unexcused absence

  7. later and so via text, he laughed at it, thankfully.

  8. But today I want to talk to you all about the very exciting and

  9. very deep topic of grave clothes.

  10. Yay. Are you guys excited?

  11. You all brought your pom poms, right?

  12. So today we're talking about grave clothes.

  13. We're going to start in John Chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  14. And many of you have heard this story.

  15. This is a story about Lazarus and he he was very sick and he

  16. was going to die. Mary and Martha come to Jesus

  17. and say, hey, our brother is sick and dying and we need your

  18. help. We need you to come now and make

  19. sure he doesn't die. That was their request.

  20. Make sure he doesn't die. Well, Jesus heard this and he

  21. thought for whatever reason, OK, I'm not Jesus, but for whatever

  22. reason, He decided to wait and he did not respond immediately

  23. then. So that is the beginning of it.

  24. Then Lazarus dies. OK, so we're going to pick up in

  25. John Chapter 11 on verse 30. I'm in the NLT version if you're

    John 11 chapter mention

  26. reading along with me, and we're going to read some scripture

  27. here, and then we're going to pray and see what the Lord has

  28. for us today. All right, John Chapter 11,

    John 11:30

  29. verse 30, Here we go. Jesus had stayed outside the

  30. village at the place where Martha met him.

  31. When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her

  32. leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus's grave

  33. to weep, so they followed her there.

  34. When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said,

  35. Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  36. When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing

  37. with her, a deep anger welled up within him.

  38. Remember that point? And he was deeply troubled.

  39. Where have you put him? He asked.

  40. Then Jesus told him, Or they Excuse me, they told him, Lord,

  41. come and see. Then Jesus wept.

  42. Remember that point, the people who were standing nearby said.

  43. See how much he loved him. But some said, this man healed a

  44. blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus

  45. from dying? Jesus was still angry as he

  46. arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its

  47. entrance. Roll the stone aside, Jesus told

  48. them. But Martha, the dead man's

  49. sister, protested. As you can imagine as you hear

  50. what she's going to say, Lord, he has been dead for four days.

  51. The smell will be terrible, Jesus responded.

  52. Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believe

  53. so? They rolled the stone aside.

  54. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, thank you for

  55. hearing me. You always hear me, but I said

  56. it out loud for the sake of all of these people standing here so

  57. that they will believe that you sent me.

  58. Then Jesus shouted, Lazarus come out and the dead man came out,

  59. his hands and his feet bound in grave clothes, his face wrapped

  60. in a head cloth. Jesus told them unwrap him and

  61. let him go. Let's pray.

  62. Father, I just thank you for bringing us all here today to

  63. hear your word as the church. Father, I thank You that you

  64. knew who was going to be here before I was even preparing the

  65. message. Holy Spirit, we just say have

  66. your way in this place. Have your way through me.

  67. And as these words are spoken, I thank you that you are meeting

  68. each person right where they need to be met today in Jesus

  69. name, Amen. So the beginning or the end of

  70. this story is there's a man named Lazarus.

  71. He died, Jesus came. This is short version.

  72. Jesus came, told him to come out of the grave, and then Jesus

  73. told the people around him to unwrap him and let him go.

  74. Well, what does this all mean? Like many of us have heard the

  75. story, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.

  76. That's pretty amazing, right? He literally physically raised a

  77. man from the dead, told him to come out of the grave, and

  78. Lazarus did. Isn't that enough?

  79. Well, I think there's more to this story that some of us,

  80. including myself for years, didn't really grasp onto.

  81. And so that's what I want to take a minute to kind of dive in

  82. today, dive into today. There's a lot of meat in this

  83. story. And many of us, like I said,

  84. it's just, oh, Jesus raised him from the dead, which in and of

  85. itself, I don't know how many all have done that, but I have

  86. not done that. Even Jesus working through me, I

  87. have not done that. That's miraculous and enough in

  88. and of itself. Right?

  89. Does everybody agree? OK, yeah, together we agree.

  90. But at the end, as Jesus or as Lazarus is coming out, it says

  91. in verse 44, the dead man came out, his hands and his feet

  92. bound in grave clothes, his face wrapped in a head cloth.

  93. Jesus told them unwrap him and let him go.

  94. This is what I want to talk about today is what grave

  95. clothes do you still have on many of us in this room.

  96. You've accepted Jesus as the Lord of your life and which I

  97. thought was enough. That's only the beginning.

  98. And so today I want to share you share with you about my story of

  99. my grave clothes and the journey, not the destination of

  100. removing the the grave clothes, but the journey of removing the

  101. grave clothes. Are you all with me?

  102. OK, so just a quick recap on who I was.

  103. I was raised in a great home. I had a mother and a father in

  104. the home. I had an older brother, great

  105. family. They, My parents loved me, My

  106. physical needs were met. My parents loved me.

  107. I was involved in soccer, they came to my soccer games, we

  108. prayed before meals and we went to church on Sunday.

  109. It was a great home. My brother, he was cool too, but

  110. that's another story. So I had a great home.

  111. I really have nothing to complain about.

  112. But I did realize as I was growing, actually more so when I

  113. got married, that it's weird how marriage just kind of shows you

  114. some of your issues. I had learned that being raised

  115. in my home that I had, I did not know how to deal with emotions.

  116. I did not know how to deal with conflict.

  117. I did not know how to do conflict resolution.

  118. I did not know how to talk about any tough issues.

  119. And by tough issues, I mean, if I burnt the dinner, like, can I

  120. talk about that and not have be all defensive like this isn't

  121. real tough. But that was tough for me

  122. because I didn't know how to work through it.

  123. And so anyway, I got I was born again.

  124. I'm kind of jumping back and forth because a lot of it is

  125. tied to Pastor Adam, but I was born again at 19 and filled with

  126. the Holy Ghost two days later. So spiritually I was made new.

  127. I was a born again believer. If I died that day, I knew I had

  128. no question in my heart I was going to heaven.

  129. Well, as I kept going, I had no understanding of how to work

  130. with emotions. And then I get born again.

  131. Well, I want you to know, when I got born again, I did not

  132. miraculously learn how to deal with emotions.

  133. I know some of you could fall out over that, but it's true,

  134. OK? I was here and my spirit was new

  135. and God was working through me and I believed in him and I had

  136. all faith and trust that if I died, I was going to heaven and

  137. He was my Lord and Savior. But somehow over here in this

  138. general vicinity where something how I pictured it, my soul and

  139. my body, they were two separate things.

  140. Well, 33 separate things that spiritually my relationship with

  141. is with God and it's spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit.

  142. And then over here, your soul and your body, which involves

  143. your emotions. Are you following so far?

  144. OK, well in my mind I love the Lord, and I would shove my soul

  145. and my body over here as if they had no reason for existence, so

  146. to speak. In my eyes, it was as if they

  147. were a ball and chain. I'll be very honest, my spirit

  148. was alive in Christ and the soul and the body, they were

  149. pointless and actually, in my eyes, tearing me down, like

  150. pulling me back from everything that God actually wanted for me.

  151. And so I just kept shoving the soul aside, kept shoving

  152. emotions aside. I didn't miraculously learn how

  153. to deal with any of that. And then one day this is a joke

  154. in my marriage. So you don't have to like throw

  155. stones at Pastor Adam by any means.

  156. While we were dating, he gave me a book by a very well known

  157. author called Managing Your Emotions.

  158. I'm going to let you know that book is still on the bookshelf

  159. and not has been. It has not been read by me

  160. whatsoever. But I have learned a lot about

  161. soul and emotions through multiple tracks.

  162. So Adam and I, pastor Adam and I joke about this because he saw

  163. that girl. You got some issues and I didn't

  164. see it. I was defensive.

  165. I had no idea what to do with emotions, with my soul.

  166. I just thought my life with God is spiritual.

  167. Like, what point is that? Well, then a couple years ago, I

  168. don't know how many of you know, but we lived in Texas and God

  169. called us to move to back to Iowa, to Des Moines.

  170. And we were praying about, Lord, what do you have us to do next?

  171. What do you have us to do next? And every part of our life we

  172. fully believed and surrendered to the Lord.

  173. We wanted to do everything the Lord was asking us to do.

  174. So we moved several times. We lived in a hotel for 40 days

  175. with our five kids because we felt like that is this open door

  176. for us. So that's what we did.

  177. It was just, we hear your word, we know it in our spirit, we

  178. move. We hear your word, we know it in

  179. our spirit, we move. Well, when we moved back to Des

  180. Moines, we felt like God was calling us to plant a church.

  181. And so we did. And we actually, there's several

  182. people like Pastor Adam was saying, actually you might have

  183. mentioned it for service. I apologize.

  184. There's several people here at Heartland that moved to Des

  185. Moines or came alongside us to help plant the church that God,

  186. that we believe God asked us to plan.

  187. And it was going great. People were getting saved,

  188. people were getting baptized. We had Koinonia like fellowship

  189. around food. And man, if you have fellowship

  190. around food, I'm in. Just so you guys know, if you're

  191. fellowshipping around food, I'm in.

  192. OK, So anyway, I'm in for Koinonia, for fellowship with

  193. food. Love it.

  194. And then the Lord's like, well, well, he didn't really say it

  195. like that, but we felt as we were praying that something just

  196. wasn't right. And I would go to Pastor Adam

  197. after services. I said, something's off,

  198. something is off. Another week we would do you

  199. know, I would lead worship. He'd preach the word or and I'd

  200. come home, something's off. And he's like, I need a little

  201. bit more than that, Heidi. Like what do you got?

  202. Like, what does that mean? Like, did you not eat the right

  203. food yesterday? Did you not get enough sleep?

  204. Like, what do you mean? I'm like, I don't know.

  205. Something's not right. And in this, not because of me

  206. saying something is off, but in this phase, we just kept digging

  207. into the Lord, like, what's going on?

  208. What's going on? What do you have for us?

  209. And we felt like he was asking us to take our Isaac, which was

  210. the church. It was a promise fulfilled to us

  211. and put it up on the altar and say, Lord, this is yours.

  212. It's not ours to do. And he asked us to close the

  213. church. And I'm going to be honest,

  214. we've heard multiple comments from people.

  215. How could that? Be.

  216. Why would you close something that's the Lord's promise?

  217. If it was healthy, you wouldn't close it.

  218. We've heard a lot and we've questioned a lot.

  219. It was a big soul searching time for all of us.

  220. But like I said, everything we were doing, we were doing our

  221. best to hear the voice of the Lord, process it, and then move

  222. on, the voice of the Lord. So we closed the church.

  223. So that was 2022, maybe I think the very end of 2022.

  224. And we started coming here. I didn't know why we were coming

  225. here. And I probably still don't know

  226. a lot of the reasons we're coming here.

  227. And I mean mean that because I think there's multiple reasons

  228. we're here, but one of them is because the Lord needed me to

  229. get healthy in an area that was a grave cloth for me, but I had

  230. no understanding about it. So when we came to Heartland, we

  231. attended a little bit before, we weren't even seeking a job.

  232. He wasn't seeking a job here. But eventually we knew this is

  233. where he was supposed to get hired.

  234. And when he took the job, I told him because I was not.

  235. I told you I was off something wasn't good.

  236. I said, Adam, you can take the job in ministry, but I'm all I'm

  237. doing right now is I'm coming to church and I'm leaving with the

  238. kids like I can't do this ministry again.

  239. This didn't get me first service, but I just I told Adam,

  240. I said I love the Lord. I am not turning from him, but I

  241. can't do ministry right now. Something's off.

  242. I just didn't know what it was. And so he said, OK, let's just

  243. do that for this season. But we still didn't know what to

  244. do, what the reasoning was. Well, come to Heartland and I

  245. knew I was going to cry at some point, so I stuck a handy dandy

  246. Kleenex right in my pocket. So anyway, I still didn't know

  247. what the problem was because I was like, I'm reading your word.

  248. I am praying, I am teaching my kids about the Lord.

  249. I have preached messages before. I have changed dirty diapers.

  250. I have scrubbed toilets for you, Lord, like, what is going on?

  251. I just don't get this. And then I happened to have the

  252. opportunity to share in the women's ministry my testimony.

  253. At this point in my testimony, I was in a pretty raw spot.

  254. I wasn't at the height of who I was in my identity or anything.

  255. I was just kind of broken and I was pretty vulnerable about

  256. that. And during that testimony or

  257. shortly thereafter, I heard about a class called the

  258. Ultimate Journey. Ultimate Journey is a class

  259. Heartland does offer. It is also offered through other

  260. ministry centers in the area. But I took the class and when I

  261. took the class, wouldn't you know it, that is when I figured

  262. out some of my grave clothes. Not super comfortable.

  263. I'm going to be honest with you. It was so not comfortable.

  264. I had it in my head that I learned Scripture.

  265. I preach about God's word. I'd be willing to be used by

  266. God, however, but I kept my soul and my body, like I said over

  267. there and then in the ultimate journey and through multiple

  268. points at this church, I realized, wait a second, they're

  269. all supposed to be integrated. Are you kidding me?

  270. I was born again for like 1520 years and I didn't know that.

  271. I didn't know. Now that's through no fault of

  272. other people or you know, I only could take in at certain points

  273. what I could take in. But I realized, wait a second,

  274. God actually wants my spirit. He wants my soul and he wants my

  275. body all in a sozo experience, all in a whole completely well

  276. experienced, not just my spirit. And this I'm telling you, this

  277. was earth shattering to me. Y'all are not earth shattered.

  278. That's fine. I went through like an earth

  279. shattering experience and I would come home from all through

  280. the journey and I'm not really know how to talk to Pastor Adam

  281. because he hadn't gone through it yet.

  282. And I was like, but this is amazing.

  283. And I've learned that my soul needs cared for and part of my

  284. soul is my emotions. Your soul is made-up of your

  285. mind, your will and emotions. OK, for me, I'm, we're not

  286. really going to talk about the mind and the will today,

  287. although they're vitally important as well.

  288. We're going to talk about the emotions because that's how God

  289. has worked through me and revelation that I have.

  290. So that's what I'm going to give to you today.

  291. OK. So I learned through this

  292. ultimate journey that I had emotions and I didn't know what

  293. to do with them. So for years, I shoved them down

  294. here. OK, we're going to act like

  295. we're in physics class here for a moment.

  296. So for years, I shoved them down here like a pendulum, like over

  297. here. I don't want to have anything to

  298. do. I'm shove, shove, shove, shove,

  299. shove down. OK, Well, when I didn't have the

  300. choice because I didn't have the emotional maturity yet, these

  301. shove, shove, shove down emotions would all of a sudden

  302. go here. They.

  303. Are. You're angry and you have no

  304. control over it 'cause you shove, shove, shove, shove down.

  305. We have so much pressure build up, but it's coming out now.

  306. Can you believe that, that my anger would do that?

  307. And I was like, oh, now you know why Pastor Adam gave me the

  308. Managing Emotions book. And so I said, hey, have you

  309. ever had Pastor Adam on your heart to pray for?

  310. Just pray for him because he has to deal with me and the emotions

  311. that God gave me. But So what I realized in

  312. Ultimate Journey and many counterpoints intersections here

  313. at Heartland is that God actually wants soul and body

  314. just as whole as he wants your spirit.

  315. They're all together. So as we start this journey, as

  316. I started this journey, I was like, wow, I have some pretty

  317. deep emotions about some things. Is that OK?

  318. Because before I've heard all I've heard, which is biblical,

  319. but I heard your you obey the voice of the Lord.

  320. You're led by the Spirit of God. Yes, that is true.

  321. So then I started hearing that I'm like, OK, so emotions don't

  322. matter. I just keep shoving them down.

  323. Even in church settings, I was shoving them down.

  324. I was like, wait, something's not right.

  325. Like I just feel so empty. And so when we closed the church

  326. and then I went through ultimate journey, I realized that I had

  327. not brought my soul and my body before the Lord.

  328. I've worshipped with my hands up, but my soul was like to me

  329. in my eyes, the decrepit part that didn't allow, I didn't

  330. allow to have voice in who I was.

  331. And so as I'm working through this, I'm realizing, OK, God

  332. wants me whole spirit, soul and body.

  333. There's actually scripture for that.

  334. It's in First Thessalonians 523. We're not going to go there.

  335. But he doesn't say. We just want you whole spirit.

  336. He wants to hold spirit, soul and body.

  337. So what does that mean if our spirit is made new the day that

  338. we're born again and our soul and our body aren't necessarily

  339. flipped and made a new that day, What do we have to do with that?

  340. What do we do with our emotions? What do we do with that stuff so

  341. that it can become more like Christ and serve Him as well?

  342. I want to take a look at a couple verses.

  343. The first one we're going to look back at is John Chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  344. where we just were in with Lazarus.

  345. OK, I had mentioned my journey was dealing with emotions and

  346. that was my grave cloth. Your journey might be different.

  347. Your journey with grave cloth might involve addictions, it

  348. might involve anger and bitterness towards certain

  349. people or people groups, It might involved involve eating

  350. too much, it might involve shopping to escape the pain.

  351. I don't know what your grave cloth is, but emotions were one

  352. of my biggest to this day that I know of.

  353. Now I'm on this journey. Please know that this is not a

  354. final destination for me. I'm willing to say OK Lord

  355. tomorrow. What do you got for me?

  356. Am I being bound by anything that's not of you because I'm

  357. alive spiritually, but if I'm bound by I'm not meaning you all

  358. are like this. I just keep walking over here.

  359. If I'm bound by anything spiritual or emotionally or

  360. anything that pulls me away from you, that's a grave cloth that I

  361. want to get rid of, OK? I don't want to be alive

  362. spiritually and then wrapped in my grave claws.

  363. Jesus clearly said in the scripture, Lazarus can be made

  364. physically made new and alive, but something on him does not

  365. belong anymore. Something on him to is tying him

  366. back to his old way of life. And Jesus is saying, when you're

  367. made new, when you're born again in the Spirit, we have to check

  368. those grave claws and say, what is tying me back to my old way

  369. of life? What is keeping me in bondage

  370. that I am not allowed to walk in the freedom that Christ actually

  371. purchased for me. This is so much bigger than

  372. spiritual freedom, guys. That is a valid part of it.

  373. And that's where we are. We get to go to heaven, but

  374. there's so much more. There's so much more freedom

  375. that Christ died for. And if we don't look at the

  376. grave clause that we're clinging to or that we're not aware of,

  377. both can be true, then we're walking around in bondage either

  378. in our soul and our body, but spiritually free.

  379. Does that make sense? Y'all tracking.

  380. OK, so we're going to look at John Chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  381. And when I started learning about emotions, I was of the I

  382. mentioned already that I didn't feel like emotions were OK.

  383. Like spiritually it wasn't OK, but then I started learning, no,

  384. God has gifted you emotions. God has gifted you emotions so

  385. you can enjoy this walk on earth and so you can understand some

  386. things that actually have weight or meaning to you.

  387. That's part of what grieving is. If we can swing to that for a

  388. minute because sometimes we think, oh, I don't want to deal

  389. with grieving. It shows you what was a value to

  390. you when you grieve something that had value to you.

  391. OK, so as these emotions are brought before the Lord, we get

  392. to decide, Well, first of all, we don't want to be over here

  393. anymore and shoving these not so nasty things down.

  394. But we also don't want to be way over here where we are reacting.

  395. And you know, I know none of you have done this.

  396. I used to do this and now I'm perfect.

  397. So I don't do it anymore. But I used to, you know, if

  398. someone cut you off in the road. You guys have never done this.

  399. I Why are they cutting me off? I have places to go.

  400. I chose to leave 10 minutes late, but they are cutting me

  401. off. So why are they getting in my

  402. way? Because my way prevails their

  403. way. So get out of my way.

  404. Has anybody done that? No.

  405. OK. Oh, I did see some hands.

  406. Wow. OK, so that is one thing.

  407. Coffee pot breaks before you're trying to go to work.

  408. Are you kidding me? I need my coffee before I go to

  409. work. We're over in the reacting

  410. state. Do you understand what I'm

  411. saying? We don't suppress our emotions,

  412. but we also have to learn. Are we reacting to things?

  413. And maybe it's the person that cut you off on the side of the

  414. road or in the road. Maybe your coffee pot broke.

  415. Maybe someone's name got defamed on Facebook and you're like,

  416. yeah, I know it. They need to be torn down.

  417. Whoa. Ouch.

  418. This isn't just the quote negative emotions.

  419. This is some of the like, why are you so excited about that?

  420. So going back to what we don't want to do, we don't want to

  421. suppress their emotions. They're a gift from the Lord.

  422. We don't want to react to them where they have power over us.

  423. That's not an emotionally mature, spiritually LED

  424. Christian. Therefore, you're not a

  425. spiritually more mature Christian.

  426. Did you all hear that part? If you're reacting out of your

  427. emotions, you're not a spiritually mature Christian.

  428. It's impossible to be spiritually mature and be

  429. emotionally immature. It does not work like that.

  430. I don't care what Bible verses you know.

  431. I don't care how long you've been saved.

  432. I don't care how big your church is or what Bible studies you

  433. lead. If you don't emotionally know

  434. how to address your emotions and bring them before the Lord and

  435. not react, we got work to do. And that was me, Yay.

  436. And I think that's a few of you too.

  437. And that's why God is asking me to bring it to the body of

  438. Christ because there's too many times where we have used knowing

  439. a certain scripture and whatever degree you have, whatever Bible

  440. study you've LED as spiritual maturity.

  441. And he's ready for his sons and daughters to say, that's not it.

  442. That's part of it. But He actually wants us to

  443. bring our emotions and our brokenness before Him and say,

  444. now what do I do with this Lord? Because I'm done suppressing it

  445. and I'm also done reacting to it.

  446. I want to be who You have called me to be.

  447. Amen. Even with emotions.

  448. OK, so now we're getting back to John 11, which I've already told

  449. we're going to. I want to take a couple looks at

  450. Jesus in Scripture as he was operating through this earth.

  451. Now one of the things we need to look at about with Jesus, He was

  452. the Son of God. He was also Son of man.

  453. You can go through Scripture, find out that he refers to

  454. himself and others refer to himself as the Son of man.

  455. It's three to four more times than he's referred to as the Son

  456. of God. So there's something in that.

  457. When God starts repeating himself in Scripture, it's time

  458. to hold up and realize, what are you trying to say here?

  459. And when Jesus is being identified more times as the Son

  460. of man than as the Son of God, it doesn't mean that it's more

  461. important, but it does mean it has weight.

  462. And so we need to look at how does Jesus embrace his humanity

  463. so many times. And when we were planting the

  464. church so many times, I was like climbing the ladder of I just

  465. need to see things how God sees them and trying to like get up

  466. and see his perspective. And that's good.

  467. That is part of it. But on the other hand, he wants

  468. to meet me where I am. It's not just about climbing and

  469. striving to see God's perspective.

  470. That is valuable and part of what God says in His Word.

  471. So we need to hold that in this hand.

  472. But what about our humanity? What about our humanity when

  473. we're weak? When we are, we're angry.

  474. When we don't know what to do? What do we do with that?

  475. If Jesus was human, he learned how to navigate this road as a

  476. human in authority, in authority to God with his emotions.

  477. So that's what we're going to look at.

  478. I keep finding more to tell you about this before we go to John

  479. 11, but here we are, John Chapter 11 in verse 33, we're

    John 11 chapter mention

  480. looking at Jesus. Jesus, this was Lazarus, Mary

  481. and Martha, and verse 33 it says Jesus saw her weeping and saw

  482. the other people wailing with her.

  483. A deep anger welled up within him and he was deeply troubled.

  484. Where have you put him? He asked them.

  485. They told him, Lord, come and see.

  486. Then Jesus wept. Here are two to three different

  487. examples of Jesus, the sinless man of God, who we want to

  488. follow and get our examples from.

  489. He's getting angry, He's welling up with anger, He's deeply

  490. troubled, and he's weeping. To me, those are some pretty

  491. deep and expressive emotions, are they not?

  492. Like he just wasn't even keel all the time.

  493. He, he had emotions in him. He was human.

  494. God actually has emotions too, but that's not what we're

  495. focusing on right now. Jesus had emotions welling up in

  496. him when Lazarus died. It's OK to have emotions.

  497. We don't need to suppress them. It's OK to have emotions, we

  498. shouldn't react to them. But what does Jesus do with his

  499. emotions? Because they are a gift from the

  500. Lord. Mostly, and I want to kind of

  501. segue there, God gave us emotions, but the enemy has come

  502. in and twisted and perverted them.

  503. So I just want to take that minute to segue or give that

  504. little side note. It's just like God created the

  505. rainbow. The enemy perverted it and has

  506. done his tactics of darkness with it.

  507. God gave us emotions and they can be used and a gift for us

  508. and for others, but the enemy is trying to come in and make you

  509. suppress them or make you react to them.

  510. So either side of this pendulum, we're doing aerobics today here

  511. too. Either side of this pendulum,

  512. not where God wants us. OK, God wants us in the middle

  513. and we're going to find out how Jesus did this with our

  514. emotions. We're not going to turn there

  515. today, but when you have time to go to John 5, I want to make

  516. sure I give you the right verse. John 5/9/19 Jesus is explaining

  517. He only does what He sees the Father doing and only says what

  518. He hears the Father saying. For years all I thought that

  519. meant was, OK God, you're having me pray for this person.

  520. I can pray for that person. OK God, I'm going to be your

  521. vessel to preach this message. I can do that.

  522. But I think it's a little deeper and a little more expansive than

  523. that. I think if Jesus was looking at

  524. this as a spirit, soul and body experience, he's going to God in

  525. events in his life and wondering, OK, God, I got anger

  526. here. What's going on?

  527. What do I need to be doing with it?

  528. And then he's waiting on God to say, this is what we're doing.

  529. This is what you're saying. Jesus never got into the point

  530. of reacting out of emotions. It's impossible for him to do

  531. that because he was sinless. He never sinned once, therefore

  532. he never got out of the authority of God once.

  533. There's a pretty big weight to that.

  534. We are not of that nature. We have sin, but it doesn't mean

  535. we can't loose our grave clothes and figure out God.

  536. What do you have me doing with my emotions so I can do what

  537. you're asking me to do and say what only you are telling me to

  538. say? Not suppress them or react.

  539. React to them anymore OK so Jesus is sitting there he has

  540. anger and he's troubled then in verse 35 he weeps it is OK if

  541. you guys cry. The strongest man alive cried.

  542. The strongest man alive got angry in verse 38 after someone

  543. said to Jesus, man, you've healed a blind man.

  544. Couldn't you even keep Lazarus from dying after they started

  545. jabbing him verbally for what he wasn't doing?

  546. He was still angry. And 38, he didn't just supersede

  547. it spiritually, which was my problem before I became so

  548. robotic with verses and I don't have them all memorized.

  549. But I knew what to say for the moment to get me spiritually on

  550. with my way so I could preach another message, so I could care

  551. for my kids again, so I could cook another meal.

  552. But I didn't allow myself to address the emotion in the

  553. moment that God was asking me to address, nor did I then say,

  554. God, what do I do with? This.

  555. And Jesus, look at this, he was still angry in verse 38.

  556. And then he says part way through 41, he starts talking to

  557. God. Jesus wasn't out on his own

  558. doing this. He was having a relationship

  559. with the Father in this moment to figure out, OK, God, what are

  560. we doing? Lazarus is dead.

  561. These people are jabbing at me with their words that I'm not

  562. doing enough. They're defaming my identity,

  563. basically, and Jesus is starting to well it up.

  564. He had human emotions, and he's going to God and saying, OK, I

  565. want you to do what we'll do, whatever we're supposed to do.

  566. And that's when he commanded Lazarus to come forth and then

  567. told the people around him to take the grave claws, grave

  568. claws off. Jesus was not outside of

  569. authority when he commanded these things.

  570. Now I want to bring up another Scripture that many of you have

  571. heard of that we're not going to turn to many of you have heard

  572. of. It's been on Facebook so many

  573. times. If Jesus can turn the tables in

  574. the temple, I can do that too. OK, here's the problem.

  575. You can't do it out of reaction and be following God.

  576. You can't do it out of out of suppression and be following

  577. God. You have to take that anger and

  578. give it to the give it to God and say, what am I supposed to

  579. do with this? What are we doing with this now?

  580. He didn't not address the anger. He understood you all know the

  581. story of the temple. He's going to the temple and he

  582. sees tax collectors and money exchangers in the temple.

  583. And that's not how the temple was supposed to be used.

  584. And he knew when he saw it, that's not it.

  585. That's not God. We can't have that here.

  586. So anger started welling up in him.

  587. Well, he didn't react and say get out because he only does

  588. what he sees the Father do, and he only says what he hears the

  589. Father say. So he had to go to the Father

  590. and say, what are we doing about this God?

  591. What are we doing about this Father?

  592. And so it doesn't say it in all the Gospels, but in one of the

  593. gospels, he goes and makes a whip before he turns the tables

  594. in the temple. What does that mean?

  595. God and Jesus are making a whip because of the anger.

  596. It's not Jesus making a whip out of his own fleshly reaction, nor

  597. is it Jesus suppressing the anger, saying they're screwing

  598. up. This is not what the temple

  599. supposed to be using, and I'm just going to deal with it.

  600. He had to do something, but he had to respond out of God's

  601. word. He had to respond out of God

  602. what God was asking him to do, not just, well, today I'm going

  603. to say forget about it. Tomorrow I'm going to say I get

  604. to freak out because I'm Jesus. He didn't get that.

  605. He had to come under authority, but he had to choose to do it

  606. every day with his emotions every day.

  607. And so when he was getting anger, angry, excuse me, he was

  608. going to God. OK, what are we going to do

  609. about this? When you start feeling emotions,

  610. it's your chance not to suppress them or react to them, but to

  611. invite God into the situation and say, why am I feeling this

  612. anger towards this situation or this person?

  613. Why am I feeling happy that their name just got defamed on

  614. Facebook? That's a valid question to ask.

  615. Holy Spirit. Why am I excited that they got

  616. the ticket on the road and I didn't even know I was going 20

  617. over the speed limit? Why?

  618. That's a valid question. So when we start having these

  619. emotions, it's not that they're all true and scriptural.

  620. It's that it's an open door for us to invite God in and say, why

  621. am I angry? Why am I happy?

  622. Why am I sad? And that's where he meets you

  623. and comforts you when necessary and gives you the right

  624. direction from there after that so that we're not stuck in these

  625. two pendulums anymore trying to figure out life on our own

  626. because that's not God's intent. We are an integrated being.

  627. This isn't just spiritual people.

  628. This is involves our soul as well.

  629. This involves our emotions. And so we get to bring those to

  630. the Lord and say, OK Lord, I'm feeling anxious about this.

  631. And here is why you want to do this.

  632. You can use the Scripture, which is true.

  633. Be anxious about nothing. If I'm starting to feel anxious

  634. and I only use the scripture now you guys need to put your your

  635. ears on and hear what my heart is on this.

  636. If I'm only using the Scripture and telling myself be anxious

  637. about nothing, be anxious about nothing, be anxious about

  638. nothing, be anxious about nothing, be anxious about

  639. nothing, be anxious about nothing, be anxious about

  640. nothing, and I just quote the Scripture, which is weaponry

  641. that we have to quote the Scripture, but I never go to the

  642. Lord and ask Him why the heck am I anxious?

  643. He's like, girl, do you even get it?

  644. You had an appointment at 8:00 and then you had a dentist

  645. appointment at 8:30. And then at 8:45 you had to call

  646. your mom for your weekly check in.

  647. And then 9:00 you had to rush home.

  648. And because so and so is sick from school.

  649. And then you had to rush home. And then at 9:30 you started

  650. thinking about, Oh, I want to redecorate my home.

  651. So we're going to get on Pinterest and start redecorating

  652. home and do all these Pinterest boards and dah, dah, dah, dah.

  653. And then at 10:00 you had another meeting.

  654. And at 11:00, you had this, and he's like, sister, what the heck

  655. are you doing? You're quoting scripture, but

  656. you're weaponizing it against me.

  657. And that's exactly what the enemy does.

  658. He uses scripture to weaponize it against the Lord.

  659. Scripture matters. You have to use it in context.

  660. This is a living, breathing document.

  661. It divides the soul and the spirit and the joint from the

  662. marrow. That's what this does.

  663. But if you don't invite God into your situation, he could be,

  664. He's like, well, all you have to do is simplify your calendar.

  665. Heidi. Meanwhile, I'm just be anxious

  666. about nothing. Heidi, be anxious about nothing.

  667. Be anxious about nothing. Be anxious about nothing, be

  668. anxious about nothing, be anxious about nothing.

  669. And I go to all my 30,000 appointments.

  670. I come home stressed. I'm not able to give to my

  671. husband and my kids what they deserve because I'm weaponizing

  672. the scripture and not allowing God to meet me where I was at in

  673. my soul. Scripture matters.

  674. Scripture and context matters more.

  675. Spirit matters. Spirit, soul, and body matter.

  676. I don't want to say more, but they matter a lot.

  677. We can no longer be segregating our spirit from our soul and

  678. body. It's a, it's an integrative

  679. thing that the Lord has given us on purpose.

  680. He knew we would have this. It wasn't a it wasn't a surprise

  681. to him. Oh, my gosh, they're angry.

  682. I can't believe it. Jesus.

  683. He's not sitting up in heaven saying, why are they angry?

  684. I can't believe they even have this emotion.

  685. That was actually a very feminine voice.

  686. So I'm sorry, God. Yeah.

  687. Anyway, do you understand? He's not surprised by your

  688. emotions. We can bring them to the Lord,

  689. but what we want to stop doing is suppressing or reacting to

  690. them. Those are the enemies territory.

  691. God's territory is saying, OK, I'm anxious, help me navigate

  692. what the heck I'm doing. OK, I will use the scripture,

  693. but if I need to cancel appointments because I am

  694. presenting, I am causing this myself, then that's an issue.

  695. He's giving me the way out today.

  696. We've talked a lot about emotions, and that was part of

  697. my story. I didn't know that they were OK.

  698. I didn't know how to deal with him in a godly way.

  699. I was either suppressing or reacting, and I usually didn't

  700. have control over when I reacted because I would get triggered

  701. off of something. And then it's like those old

  702. things where it's like like those snakes or something shoved

  703. in a can. Then all of a sudden they're

  704. like everywhere and you have no control over when it comes out.

  705. That's kind of where I was. And again, he got to deal with

  706. it. My kids got to deal with it.

  707. But I'm so grateful that now God is like, hold up, Heidi, you

  708. have a soul on purpose. I didn't mistake when I made

  709. your soul. It's not a mistake.

  710. It's not a problem in the factory setting.

  711. He knew you had a spirit, soul and body.

  712. He knew the purpose of all of them.

  713. He wants them integrated and all serving him together.

  714. As in my case, Heidi, my soul serving him.

  715. My soul submitted to his authority, not separate and in

  716. the enemy's territory. That was one of my grave clothes

  717. was emotions. You guys might have some other

  718. grave clothes. Maybe you didn't necessarily

  719. identify with the emotional part.

  720. Maybe you had a great upbringing and you've known how to stay in

  721. the middle row with your emotions from your beginning,

  722. which I highly doubt. But I will give you the benefit

  723. of the doubt. That's fine, you can take it to

  724. the Lord. OK, I'm not here to tell you

  725. what it is, but my story was emotions.

  726. That was my grave cloth. One of them.

  727. I know that this is a journey with God, so if He shows me

  728. another grave cloth, you better expect me to know that I am

  729. going to be going to God and say, how do we get rid of this

  730. one? Because I don't want to be

  731. living in the bondage that the enemy has meant for me this

  732. whole time, even though I thought I was free, right?

  733. So I'm going to ask the ministry team to come up as we close

  734. today. Some of you have probably grave

  735. clothes on and maybe you came in here today not knowing.

  736. That's fine, I have no judgement towards you because none of us

  737. have it all figured out. None of us have come been have

  738. been completely perfected and are walking sinless like Jesus.

  739. Not one. So my grave cloth, my biggest

  740. one that I have found to date is not knowing how to submit my

  741. submit my emotions to the Lord. Your grave cloth could be

  742. watching porn, something that's keeping you in bondage outside

  743. of God's freedom. That's what we're talking about.

  744. Grave clothes. You could be shopping to escape

  745. pain. I know shopping isn't

  746. necessarily a bad thing, but if you're using it to escape pain

  747. and not address soul stuff with the Lord, it's a problem.

  748. You might be running to the bottle to escape pain, to not

  749. deal with your soul with the Lord.

  750. These are just some examples. There's so many examples that I

  751. mean, if we interviewed everybody, they would probably

  752. have oh, and I did this and I did this.

  753. Let's figure out what the grave clothes are so God can show us

  754. and loose us today through our ministry team so that we can be

  755. walking in the freedom that God has provided us since we were

  756. born again. We just didn't we weren't aware

  757. about. OK, as we close today, I want to

  758. tell you one thing. At the end of John Chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  759. this is a story about Lazarus. Lazarus came out of the grave.

  760. The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in grave clothes,

  761. his face wrapped in a head cloth.

  762. So he was still bound with his grave clothes.

  763. And Jesus told the people around Lazarus to lose him, to unwrap

  764. him. What does this tell me?

  765. This is not just about you and Jesus.

  766. This is about a community, a people, a body, a ministry team

  767. that is here to help you be loosed into the freedom that

  768. Jesus has provided for you. Thanks for listening to our

  769. podcast. If you'd like to help more
