Let your Heart be Different

Hi, this is Dave Olson. I'm the senior leader of

Heartland Church located in Ankeny, IA.

I hope the following message challenges, encourages and

ultimately changes you. Thanks for joining us.

No, I am not the second coming of Pastor Dave.

This is for somebody. If you're feeling unsettled, if

you're feeling pressure about something right now, if you're

just, if you're just kind of and you don't know why and you can't

put your finger on it, Let me tell you this.

Sometimes God is comfortable with making you uncomfortable

where you are so he can move you when it's time to move you to

the next thing, right? So don't always interpret

everything in a negative light. Sometimes you need to just go,

OK, God, what are you doing here?

Kind of like me yesterday. I'm sitting in my house and I'm

just feeling uncomfortable and I'm just going, God, what in the

world? I mean, I've been a good

Christian this week. I'm this week and, and I, you

know, and I'm just feeling just unsettled.

And so I'm supposed to be like installing a toilet and getting

some plumbing stuff. And who doesn't love to do that

on a Saturday? But I instead, I just sat down

and I prayed for a while and I read, read the word a little bit

more and it was still there. So I'm walking around my kitchen

and I'm going, God, while we're talking about things, you gave

me this message like back in September, this, this sermon

thing. What are you going to do with

this? What, what, what are you going

to do? What, what, what do you want?

Still pretty quiet in my kitchen.

So I decided to take a nap because I'm that spiritual and I

couldn't sleep. And I'm just laying there and

I'm praying. God, what is this?

I'm unsettled. I'm the guy that plays keyboard

or guitar. I'm not the guy that does this.

What? And Pastor Dave calls me, says I

can't be there tomorrow. And I felt like God told me you

had something. Why yes, yes, I do.

Never lie to your pastor because that's not going to go well for

you. I'm just telling you that right

now. So here I am, and for those of

you that don't know me well, I'm one of the board members here,

so some of you voted for me. At least that Rick Arrowwood.

I, my wife Carrie and I have three wonderful daughters who

have snagged themselves three wonderful husbands and given us

6 1/2 grandchildren. Awesome, right?

It is awesome. We've been here 17 years and if

you know Carrie at all my wife, you know that she loves snow and

she loves Christmas and Target. So on the Giving tree in the

back, she looked for A tag that had a Target gift card request

on it. And that's the one she snagged.

I'm just here to tell you there are more cards left on the

giving Tree. So you have an opportunity still

like one more week, I think, right, that you can, you can

bless someone. So what a great opportunity to

bless someone at Christmas. And it's pretty, it's easy to

do. And Carrie might have gotten the

last Target one, but you know, buck up, do something.

I really wanted to make this a Christmas message.

I really wanted to extend Pastor Dave's message series about

women who were alive at the time of Christ.

And I got started thinking of all the old politicians that we

know. And no, I guess I, I don't know

anyone. So I'm just going to have to

leave that to him to wrap up. But here's, here's the thing.

This is, this is God poking at my heart first.

This is me reading Isaiah chapter 6 in September and God

Isaiah 6 · chapter mention

poking at my heart and going, you need to pay attention to

this. And so I'm sharing that with you

and I'm going to be a mess while I do it, and I don't care.

All right. And if you get messed up,

awesome. But the Holy Spirit is going to

move on us today. And what He showed me, He's

showing us because, see, God doesn't mean he isn't

vindictive. He shows this thing by the Holy

Spirit so that we can conform to His image in His will, so that

we can take part in the Kingdom. And we can be pleasing to His

heart because we're walking where He walks, right?

So I read this in the year that King Uzziah died.

I saw the Lord high and exalted, seated on the throne, and the

train of his robe filled the temple.

And above him were seraphim, each with six wings.

With two wings they covered their faces with two, they

covered their feet with two. They were flying, and they were

calling to one another. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God

Almighty. The whole earth is full of His

glory. As a worship leader, I've sung

this a million times, but on this day, God said, if you want

to really grasp the significance of this, you need to look at who

I, who Uzziah was. I mean, my Bible college

education was 35 years ago. My Old Testament history is a

little well, anyway, I have the Internet, so I'm good and I and

I have a Bible. So you can read the story of the

kings in Second Chronicles and Uzziah's story starts in chapter

25. Don't, don't read that.

Now we're going to talk a bit. So Isaiah also wrote about them

because he was alive during the reign of these kings.

So when you read Isaiah, the book of Isaiah, a lot of the

things that he was talking about were happening during the reigns

of these kings. The verse that Pastor Adam read

this morning, Isaiah 1 through 5, describes prophetically and

poetically the sad story of the kings Amaziah, Uzziah, his son

Jotham, his son Ahaz, and his son Hezekiah, Kings of Judah,

the southern Kingdom that was ruled by the House of David,

though they were the House of David now mostly in name only

and some barely. That Samaria to the north had

broken away was ruled by the House of Jeroboam, and they were

evil in every way you could think of.

And Isaiah's version gives us the spiritual side of the

chronology and Chronicles, but from the perspective of the

broken heart of God. So Isaiah 2 says, come on,

descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

A plea. Isaiah 217 says the arrogance of

man will be brought low, and human pride will be humbled.

The Lord alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will

totally disappear. And Isaiah 5 verses 20 through

Isaiah 5:20–25

25. And tell me if this doesn't

sound like a country we may have lived in.

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness

for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for

sweet and sweet for bitter. And woe to those who are wise in

their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at

mixing drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny

justice to the innocent. Therefore, as tongues of fire

lick up straw, and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so

their roots will decay, their flowers blow away like dust.

For they rejected the law of the Lord God Almighty and spurn the

word of the Holy One of Israel. And I know we're talking about

Israel, but it feels like America to me a little bit.

Therefore the Lord's anger burns against His people.

His hand is raised, He strikes them down the mountains shake

the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets.

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away.

His hand is still upraised. This was the heart of God over

Israel. Now for the history lesson.

To tell the story of Uzziah, we have to start with his Father

and Messiah and Messiah's father.

Joash was at first a really great and righteous king of

Israel. He rebuilt the temple and and

reestablished worship in Israel. But after the priest Jehoiada,

that's close enough. Nobody else is going to say it

better. Jehu Otto died.

And guys, you know how long he lived.

He was the priest who helped Joash take his throne and he

stayed as his advisor and he guided him in the hand of the

Lord. And tell me the Lord didn't

extend this because he lived 130 years.

Should have also been a clue to Joash.

Like I should probably keep doing that, doing those things.

But he didn't. He turned back to Asherah poles

and idol worship and set it up all over Israel.

He even when Joe had his son Zachariah, whom God sent to call

him to account for his wickedness, he participated in

his murder. So God gave him over to the

Arameans who killed him and his son Amaziah became the king.

And Joash, who was once the great reformer, the once the

great revivalist, was not even buried in the tombs of the kings

of Israel. They just put him in a box

somewhere. Amaziah was listed as one of

Judah's good and successful kings.

He had a lot of military victories, but in one of them,

over the nation of Sere, he brought home their gods and set

them up as his own. I mean, think of that, right?

Hey, these are the gods of the of the country we just

conquered. These should be pretty good,

don't you think? God wasn't pleased and Amaziah

became arrogant and he picked a fight with Joe as the king of

Israel. And God set this all up so that

he would start a war that he would lose miserably.

And he was captured and imprisoned in Samaria for a long

time, but eventually was killed by his own people with plotting

his who'd been plotting his death ever since he turned his

back on the Lord. Arrogant, proud.

This is what was said of him at the beginning of his story,

Second Chronicles 25. Two.

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not

wholeheartedly. He served the Lord, but not with

the whole heart. His half hearted service to God

and his pride, his arrogance, he passed on to his son Uzziah.

So then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was 16 years

old, and made him king in place of his father, a Messiah.

He did a lot of good stuff. He was the one who rebuilt,

built Elath and some of the other cities that they'd

captured from the Philistines, restored it to Judah after a

Messiah had rested with his ancestors.

And Uzziah was 16 years old when he became the king, and he

reigned in Jerusalem 52 years. This is a long time for the

kings of the of those generations.

His mother's name was Jacaliah. She was from Jerusalem.

And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his

father Amaziah had done. Unfortunately, that wasn't a

very high bar, right? We were talking about

generations this morning, right? Amaziah, arrogant, proud and

half hearted and his son served the Lord just like him.

Fathers, this isn't this is just a gulp moment for us, right?

It's more than just good for you to serve the Lord.

How you serve the Lord is how your sons will serve the Lord.

And that's for all of us who are physical and who are spiritual

fathers to this house. He sought God during the days of

Zechariah the priest, one more time, a faithful priest guiding

the king, who instructed him in the fear of God.

And as long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.

He won battles with the Philistines, the Arabs, the

Ammonites. He broke down their walls,

rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem and the gates of Jerusalem.

The Arameans brought him tribute.

He had a large and well equipped army.

He was famous in all the earth because God had helped him out

until verse 16 says. But after Uzziah became

powerful, his pride led to his downfall.

He was unfaithful to the Lord his God and entered the temple

of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.

Azariah, the priest with eighty other courageous priests,

Because you'd better be, because the king can.

Yeah, kill. You followed him in and they

confronted King Uzziah and said it is not right for you, Uzziah,

to burn incense to the Lord. That is for the priest, the

descendant of Aaron. Please don't do this thing.

They've been consecrated to burn the incense.

Leave the sanctuary for you. Been faithful, and you will not

be honored by the Lord your God in this.

But Uzziah, who had a sensor in his hand ready to burn incense,

became angry. And while he was raging at the

priests in their presence before the incense altar in the Lord's

temple. I mean, think of that.

He's come into the Lord's temple at the place where incense is

burned before the presence of the Lord in a role that's not

his. And he's raging at the priests

that are telling him you can't do this.

And as he was raging at the priests in their presence before

the incense altar in the Lord's temple, leprosy broke out on his

forehead. And when Azariah, the chief

priest, and all the year the priest, looked at him, they saw

that he had leprosy on his forehead, and they hurried him

out. And indeed he himself was eager

to leave, because the Lord had afflicted him.

And King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died.

He lived in a separate house, a leper, A leper banned from the

temple of the Lord and from ruling the Kingdom.

Jotham, his son, had charge of the palace and governed the

people of the land. Now remember that it said that

it was his pride that he was down, it was his downfall.

David and his men, when they were fleeing from Saul, went to

the temple and they gave them the showbread that had been

offered for the before the presence of the Lord.

This only belonged to the priest, but the priest gave it

to them and they were all right. Why?

Because the heart of David was different.

His intent, his purpose was different, and he was anointed

to be king. But Uzziah went in there because

he was proud and because he was arrogant.

This makes me think that it's more than just a desire to

worship God, but he was using God, that this was a power play.

You know, like that time that Saul was ready to go into the

battle and Samuel was supposed to come and offer a sacrifice

before all the people went out to the battle.

And Samuel was late. And Saul is going, I can't do

this if I don't have the blessing of the Lord on this.

And so he decided that he would do the sacrifice himself.

And then Samuel showed up. So for all the things that

Samuel that Saul did, trying to kill David, all of the, the, you

know, throwing a spear at him, just doing all the things that

he did, the thing that he was rejected by the Lord as king for

was this making this sacrifice. And this is what Samuel told

him. Because you have not honored the

Lord in front of the people. He has rejected you as king.

And I think Uzziah had the same heart.

I mean, ultimately he was wanting to be seen as one who

wielded the power of God, maybe for his next conquest, or even

maybe God was his next conquest. Ultimately, his argument with

Priest wasn't. His argument with them was, who

are you to tell me that I can't do this?

Who are you to tell me that I can't do this?

And that wasn't the point at all.

God had said no, and he didn't care.

Uzziah God had said no and he didn't care.

This is the next step in Amaziah his father's dishonor of God and

arrogance, his son's dishonor of the very holiness in the

presence of God. So King Uzziah is in this

progression from holiness to idolatry at Joash.

His grandfather a passion, a passion from passion to half

hearted arrogance like his father and Messiah to arrogance

and brazen to Zane for the holiness of God in Uzziah.

And so he became the leper king cast outside the camp.

His son Jotham did better. He learned from what his father

did and he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.

It said that Jotham grew powerful because he walked

steadfastly before the Lord his God.

But Jotham's son, Ahaz, he could have been the wokest of the

woke. He might have invented the EI,

I'm not sure. But what he did do was he closed

up the temple, sealed the doors, closed it up and set up Baal

worship. And he set up high places for

all the Israelites to worship in their cities and towns.

And he set up Asherah poles and he sacrificed children to Molech

in the fire in the valley of Hinnom.

This is the progression that starts with a half hearted king

who is arrogant and proud to a son who doesn't honor the

presence of God and skips a generation to the king who

abhors God entirely. Israel was dark.

It was so dark. It was like Los Angeles in 2023.

Dark but then God, always God. Hezekiah A has the most wicked

of the kings. His son Hezekiah did what was

right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had

done. That's what it says all these

other kings. It says he served the Lord just

as his father a Messiah had done or just as his father.

But for Hezekiah, they reached back to the king that God had

selected for the kingly line and said he's just like David.

Come on. Is that not the heritage that we

want? I mean, Richard Earwood is my

dad, but 6 foot 4, I'm never going to do that.

But I want to look like David in this generation.

I want to have the heart of David, the passion of David, the

reverence for the holiness of God, of David.

Hezekiah purified the temple, opened it back up and cleansed

it top to bottom, restored the Levites, the sacrifices.

They celebrated the Passover. They worshipped on the very

instruments that David had made. They pulled David's worship

instruments out of mothballs and worshipped like David.

Come on, I like piano, but man, I'd take me some of those David

instruments right now. It was stunning.

And anyone who had lived under his father a has his reign would

have never seen that in one generation all of this was going

to change. They'd have never imagined this

was possible. And I look at those kings and

I'm reminded of all the ministries where it became more

about the ministry than holiness.

We've all been recipients of the fire that burned at IHOP, Jimmy

Swaggart Ministries. I, I'm not even going to start

naming names. You know what I'm talking about.

Lies, deceit, greed, perversion, serving God, but with the same

immorality as setting up an Asherah pole in the temple.

And I'm not talking about patriotism or righteousness in

government, people serving God and serving the country.

But Christian nationalism is something darker.

God becomes just the tool for the next political conquest, not

to serve Him, to serve us. I told you I didn't want to say

this, but it's swinging unholy incense in the very face of the

Almighty. Or how about how the Church has

become comfortable with being religious without being

wholehearted, without being sold out?

I hate every way that I've become comfortable with that.

Not just calling good evil and evil good, but not calling

anything anything. Not having the voice that we

were set to have in this generation for righteousness.

And that's when it hit me. In the year that King Uzziah

died, I saw the Lord high and lifted up, and his train filled

the temple. It has to die.

Uzziah in US, in the church, in the ministries of the church,

and the things that the body of Christ does to represent his

face in the earth. Uzziah has to die if we want to

see the Lord high and lift it up, if we want to see His glory

fill the temple. If we have built any kind of

altar to sin and enshrined it in any way, that Uzziah has to die.

If we've attempted to make God serve our ends instead of

serving His, that Uzziah has to die.

If we have been anything but blazing white hot with His fire

in our eyes, that Uzziah has to die.

Now I will tell you that I think this is already in progress.

Uzziah's name in the other manuscripts is also called

Azariah. And isn't it interesting that it

was Azariah the priest who confronted him when he went into

the presence of God? Same name.

God always has an Azariah, the priest and the 80 faithful

priest with him. He always has a remnant, and

they are always speaking for the Lord, and they are always there.

And I know that I'm looking at Azariah is in this room right

now. And after Ahaz, the worst of the

kings comes. Hezekiah, come on.

Just look at what's happened in the last two years.

Roe V Wade is gone. Who of us ever thought we would

live to see that day? It's gone.

The back of the unrighteousness in our Ahaz culture is breaking.

You can see it. You can even see it on Facebook.

That's, yeah. After Charlie Kirk's death,

there is a Hezekiah generation rising up now in the earth.

And even if we have been an Amaziah or a Uzziah or even

Ahaz, we can turn our hearts to the Lord and rise up as the

fathers and mothers who will hold the Hezekiah generation up

as they bring the glory of the Lord back into the earth.

It's generational. It's generational, but that

doesn't always mean generational curse.

There is generational glory that can be released to the earth.

And it's time for Uzziah and everything that he represents to

die. So here's your Christmas story,

right? I have to do this this December.

It's in the Bible. Do you remember that?

Carrie and I are also the facilitators for Ultimate

Journey Phases 2 and three, right?

You know that right? I love you guys.

So some of you have already heard me say this.

Jesus didn't come to fix your life.

Christianity is not a 12 step self help life improvement

program. It's a cross.

He hasn't come to fix your life, He's come to kill you.

But what he's killing isn't you, right?

If you've been an ultimate journey Phase 1, you know all

the lies that have been piled onto your life.

Every lie that the enemy has told you, that family members

have told you, that culture has told you that society has told

you, have been pasted on you by the enemy and said here, this is

your identity and it's built this form around you that's

marked by sin and the glory of God that's within you can't even

shine out through this crud caked on you.

And Jesus is saying, let me kill that because you were made in

fashion in the image and likeness of God, and that is in

here. And his Spirit cries out to your

Spirit and says, come on underneath of all of that, you

look like me, you love like me, you walk like me.

Let me free you from that dead thing.

That's on you. Let me kill it so that the you

that he's always seen and he's always known and he's always

loved. Did you know when Jesus died on

the cross for you? You're going to say AD 33,

right? You're wrong, it says.

Before the world was spun up, before the foundations of the

earth were laid, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God was slain.

What does that imply? All the things that I was ever

going to do wrong, because God knows all the things He already

knew, all the mistakes I'd made, He already knew I was going to

make them. And included in the price what

it would take to get past those things.

He who did not even hold back his own Son, how then with Him

will He not freely give us all things?

You, you on the cross. It says that He endured the

cross, despising its shame for the glory set before him.

If you read John 17 and you look at when Jesus said I've taken

the glory you've given me, and I've given it to an

organization, I've given it to a structure, No, I've given it to

them and all those who believe on my name, through them it's

you. You are the glory of God

revealed in the earth. All we got to do is chip off a

little Amaziah and we're good to go, right?

You were always loved. You were always.

He looked at you from the cross and said worth it, Worth it,

worth it. One passage even implies that he

bragged about the deal that he got in purchasing you.

Come on. So now we know who we know who.

Well, all of them are, but we know who Uzziah is.

Listen again, this is what's on the line for us.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord high and

exalted, seated on a throne, and the train of his robe filled the

temple. And above him were seraphim, and

each with six wings. With two they covered their

faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they

were flying and they were calling to one another.

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.

The whole earth is full of his glory.

Come on. And at the sound of their

voices, the doorpost and threshold shook, and the temple

was filled with smoke. Look, I mean, doorposts.

Hold the door open, right? The threshold, it's the place

that marks inside the door. And outside the door, the door

is shaking, and on earth, as it is in heaven, is about to step

through the door. That's what a Hezekiah

generation does in the earth. Come Lord, oh come Lord, I can't

start praying yet. I got to finish the sermon.

And Isaiah's response, Woe to me, I cried, for I am ruined.

I'm a man of unclean lips, and I live among the people of unclean

lips, and my eyes have seen the king, the Lord Almighty.

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand,

which he taken with tongs from the altar.

And with it he touched my mouth and said, See this has touched

your lips, your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.

Remember he cried out, not only am I guilty and are my lips

unclean, but he said My people and their lips are unclean.

And the Angel said, your sin has been atoned for.

Will we be the ones who stand before Almighty God and say,

touch me for my nation? Will you cleanse the lips of my

nation? God, this is our heritage, this

is our inheritance. Then I heard the voice of the

Lord saying, now, right now, Uzziah has died.

That which was polluted and broken and sinful and denying

God and dishonouring God has died and the glory of God is

released to the earth. And if you've been standing

there going, it's I'm not worthy, I'm not good enough, I

can't do this thing. See, here comes an Angel with a

coal in his hands for you, and you and you and our nation.

And Isaiah cried out, Here am I, the Lord said, who will go for

us? Who will I send?

And the Lord said and he replied, Here am I send me.

It's releasing the glory of the Lord and all the earth.

Let's stand together. It's shaking the doorways and

thresholds so God can step through.

It's removing the guilt and releasing atonement for the man

and for the nation of unclean lips.

And then whom shall I send? And who will go for us, Says

God, to his house. Who will I send?

Who will go for us? Place your hands out in front of

you. Say this here am I, Send me.

Oh God. God let every peace that looks

like he's I in our life, in the church, in the state, in this

nation, burn it away. Burn it away, God.

And even the things that Jesus said, take up your cross and

follow me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

God, the things you're calling us to nail it to a cross, to

nail Uzziah in a cross and sacrifice it because it's not

you and it's not who you made us to be.

And we don't want that in our lives.

We don't want that in our church.

We don't want that in our sons and daughters.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord high and

lifted up. God come be high and lifted up

in the midst of your people, of us, God, of us.

And if we have to learn and we have to grow and we have to

study and we have to become. And if it takes work.

It's not works like earning our salvation, it's works like

walking where you walk and following in your footsteps and

taking part in the family business which is redeeming the

earth. God here we are.

Send us Uzziah has to die that the glory of the Lord may live.

Come Lord, come Lord, that's my altar call.

That's it. That's what I've got.

I kind of don't do the standard centered prayer that says, O

Lord, and this is my life helped my life to improve in me to be

better and to do things right. He's got a cross for all that

but his life in you. He wants to raise his life in

you and he wants you to look just like him.

He wants you to be the one that he says, just like my servant

David. Hezekiah looks just like my

servant David. He worships like David.

He plays the instruments of David.

He sings like David. He glows like David.

He represents me before the earth like David.

Come on. If you want to come to the

altars, the altars are open. You can kneel where you are, you

can try to drive home. It doesn't matter.

The Holy Spirit's got your number right now come to the

altar or pull over on your way home, because either way, God.

And remember, this started because I prayed a simple

kitchen prayer yesterday. God, what are you doing?

Prayed one prayer already. Ready.

Prayed this one with me. God, what are you doing?

Come on, God, what are you doing in me?

Yeah. This is just time to do business

with God. I don't have a different agenda

than that. And and your simple yes might be

powerful enough right now to just do all the things that need

to be done. If your yes isn't good enough,

God can improve your yes. That's never a problem for him.

A broken and contrite spirit He will never despise.

Never, never, never. You are so amazing, so valuable,

so wonderful to him. But if you need to come and

pray, come and do that. And I'm going to close this with

a prayer and, and be sure to sign up for Ultimate Journey in

Jesus, I am so thankful that we are part of what you are doing

in the earth in this time and in this hour and that you've chosen

not to pass us by, but to visit us, to come and be in our

presence, to come and make your presence felt and known, to make

your face seen in our hearts in this room right now.

So I bless these your people to walk in the light of your glory,

to walk in your presence, not just in this moment and in this

time when they come to church. They are the Kingdom of God on

feet in the earth today, in the places where they work, in the

middle of their families and all the things that we do or that we

say. We represent you and we become

you as you live and walk and move and breathe and fill us

with your Holy Spirit. You thought you were not a big

deal. You thought you were not a

thing. You thought other people got to

be the thing, but you didn't get to be the thing.

You are the thing. You are the big deal.

You are the reason that heaven said I can't possibly imagine

not redeeming you. So Father, we just bless your

people to walk in your glory and Lord every God, I pray that by

your Holy Spirit you'll continue to show us the things if we have

not been made aware of things that look like a Messiah in our

lives that are not yet dead. Show us.

Be merciful, O God, and show us and free us.

God, we love you, we love you so much, You're so good to us.

We can't even express how great your glory in your presence is

does how much you mean, but we love you with our whole hearts,

our mind and our soul and our strength.

Thank you Father, in Jesus name, Amen.
