  1. Tables and turn to the Gospel of Luke chapter 6, Luke chapter 6

Luke 6 chapter mention Luke 6 chapter mention

  2. and it's page 915. If you're using one of the

  3. Bibles in the seat around you just as you're opening to that.

  4. I want to welcome a few new members to our church family.

  5. So would you join me in welcoming Grace Van Weingarten,

  6. Bob Nugent, and Pearl Dale to our church family today?

  7. If you consider forward to be your church home and you're not

  8. yet a member, I want to encourage you to take that step.

  9. It's a great way to covenant with each other to live together

  10. as a family on the mission that God has called us to.

  11. Luke chapter 6. I want to begin reading at verse

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  12. 24 today. But woe to you who are rich, for

  13. you have received your comfort. Woe to you who are now full, for

  14. you will be hungry. Woe to you who are now laughing,

  15. for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all people speak

  16. well of you, For this is the way their ancestors used to treat

  17. the false prophets. So let me remind you where we

  18. are in Luke chapter 6. A couple of weeks ago we started

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  19. into this series called Different.

  20. Jesus had been up on a mountain praying with some of his

  21. disciples. He came down into a level area.

  22. This large group of people are gathered together in this area

  23. to hear from Jesus, to hear his teachings.

  24. And last week Jesus talked about how even in the most difficult

  25. circumstances of life, you can be blessed.

  26. You can experience the blessed life.

  27. This week, Jesus takes the exact same physical circumstances that

  28. he described last week, and he flips it on its head and he's

  29. looking at it from an entirely different perspective than what

  30. he did last week. And this week he uses a word.

  31. Whoa now, most of us don't ever use the word woe in our everyday

  32. language unless somebody does something shocking or annoying

  33. and you're going woah, hold on a second there, right?

  34. That's not what Jesus meant when he uses the word woe in this

  35. passage. Woes in the Bible were generally

  36. an exclamation of God's judgment.

  37. You should consider a woe to be a warning sign.

  38. It's like Jesus is saying, if you do this, this is what's

  39. going to happen, or maybe a better way of looking at it

  40. because you do this, this is what is going to happen.

  41. This is the consequence that is going to come.

  42. Now, if we're honest with ourselves, most of us don't

  43. really respond well to warnings. Most of us ignore warning signs

  44. that come to us in life. Want to put a picture up on the

  45. screen? It's a picture from the Dolomite

  46. Mountain Range in northeastern Italy.

  47. It's a beautiful area and beautiful pictures of mountains

  48. from that area. This past July, there were a

  49. series of warnings that were posted throughout this mountain

  50. range and also into some of the Alps.

  51. A series of rock fells, rock falls had taken place throughout

  52. the area. And so hiking paths were shut

  53. down and people were told, hey, you can't go into these areas.

  54. So you see a sign there, it says close, It says it in multiple

  55. languages to tell people. And the signs were everywhere

  56. all over this mountain range. Well, on July the 19th, there

  57. were two Belgian hikers who were out hiking and they just walked

  58. right on past all of the warning signs that were on all the

  59. trails in this mountain range. And believe it or not,

  60. shockingly, they found themselves trapped by rockfall

  61. and a rescue helicopter had to be sent in to rescue those two

  62. hikers out that day. Within just two weeks, a British

  63. hiker was in almost the exact same area.

  64. And he thought to himself, these warning signs don't know what

  65. they're talking about. I know what I'm doing.

  66. I'm going to go for a hike in these trails.

  67. And shockingly, the British hiker found himself in the exact

  68. same spot that the Belgian hikers had found themselves.

  69. Rockfall happened. He was trapped.

  70. They had to send in helicopters to rescue him and pull him out.

  71. They actually charged, I don't know why they charged the

  72. British guy but not the Belgian guys, but they charged the

  73. British guy $16,500 US to cover the cost of the rescue

  74. operation. Now, most of us, we think, well,

  75. that's good. He was dumb for going and

  76. ignoring all the warning signs that were in front of him.

  77. But but the reality is we all don't pay attention to warning

  78. signs. There's something inside of us

  79. that says I don't need to pay attention to a warning sign.

  80. If a police officer ever pulled you over and gave you a warning

  81. for speeding, how much longer is it before you're speeding again?

  82. Right? We don't all listen to warnings

  83. that come at us. There's just something inside of

  84. us that says when you warn me about something, you can't tell

  85. me what to do. I know better than you.

  86. I'm willing to take the risk. It's fine.

  87. Don't worry about it. And I want to say that as we

  88. come to this passage, whatever you do, don't treat Jesus the

  89. same way that you would other people.

  90. You and I, we need to pay far more attention to the warnings

  91. of Jesus then we do the warnings that we're going to receive from

  92. someone else. Because if Jesus is really the

  93. Son of God, if he's really the Messiah that's been promised

  94. from the Old Testament that we studied and talked about, if

  95. he's really the one who has all power, then his warnings

  96. certainly take on a different significance than the warnings

  97. that we'll get anywhere else in life.

  98. Jesus knows what he's talking about.

  99. In fact, when he gives a warning, it's it's not a

  100. prediction. It's a guarantee of something

  101. that's going to happen. So do yourself and the people

  102. around you a favor and pay attention to the warnings that

  103. Jesus wants to give. What Jesus is warning you today

  104. is this. Chasing the wrong things in life

  105. will lead to disappointment or even disaster.

  106. Now I recognize that in the climate and the culture that we

  107. live in, as soon as I say Jesus is giving you a warning, don't

  108. do this. There's some of us who go, but I

  109. thought Jesus was all about love and compassion.

  110. That feels a lot like fear to me and it and I don't want to like

  111. ever respond or make any decisions based out of fear and

  112. someone scaring me into something.

  113. I I just want love and compassion to come my way.

  114. And I can I just say almost all of us in this room, we are here

  115. today because at some point in time somebody scared us into

  116. something. Let me give you an example.

  117. At some point in time when you were a kid, somebody said to

  118. you, don't cross the street without looking both ways.

  119. Why? Because you're going to get

  120. smoked by a car if you do, right?

  121. They're giving you a warning that tells you not to do

  122. something. Now why do they give you that

  123. warning? They give you that warning

  124. because they love you. They care about you.

  125. And that's what Jesus is doing here.

  126. When Jesus gives us warnings, it's not just because he's out

  127. to be a fear monger to scare you.

  128. He's giving you and I warnings because He does love us and He

  129. does care for us and He does want what's best for us.

  130. And the very first warning that Jesus gives is found in verse 24

  131. and it's this money will not bring you lasting comfort.

  132. The very first woe that Jesus gives us to those who are rich

  133. now a bunch of us, as soon as I say, OK, Jesus is giving a

  134. warning to the rich, you immediately check out and go,

  135. well that's not me so I don't have to worry about this.

  136. I'm good. Did you know that if you have a

  137. household income of $50,000 a year, your income is 3 1/2 times

  138. the global median income for a house and you are in the richest

  139. 18% of the population in the world?

  140. As Scotiabank likes to tell you, you're richer than you think.

  141. Now, I get that rich is a relative term.

  142. I understand that cost of living here and cost of groceries and

  143. mortgages and all those things is one thing.

  144. So for some context, the people here in Jesus Day who are

  145. considered the rich were usually people who were land owners,

  146. especially people who owned more than one property.

  147. They would have been classified in the rich.

  148. Business leaders, business owners would have been

  149. classified as being rich. There was an elite to society in

  150. that day. Government officials, certain

  151. religious officials, people who were well known popular people,

  152. they would have been considered rich in society.

  153. And there were other individuals along the way who had who had

  154. substantial personal wealth. All right, we OK, We're going to

  155. find out if we're OK. All right.

  156. Other individuals who had substantial personal wealth

  157. would have also been considered rich.

  158. I want to be clear. Jesus is never against people

  159. having money. If you look at the end of the

  160. life of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea is a wealthy man who

  161. uses his tomb to bury Jesus in. Even Luke, who writes this

  162. gospel is a physician. Luke the physician would have

  163. had money, and he writes this gospel to a guy named

  164. Theophilus, who is recognized as a Roman official, and he would

  165. have had money as well. So Jesus isn't speaking out

  166. against having money. Having money can be great.

  167. There are all kinds of benefits to having money.

  168. You can afford a house that other people can't afford you.

  169. You can. You can pretty much go anywhere

  170. you want to on vacation that other people can't go.

  171. You can go and buy clothes just for fun.

  172. You can eat out at the nicest restaurant you want to eat out

  173. at just because you need a break from cooking dinner today.

  174. You can give money to ministries and people in need at a far

  175. higher rate than other people. Can I?

  176. I had a friend who once described his career this way.

  177. He said, Kirk, I am a professional philanthropist.

  178. So what do you mean by that? He said God's given me a unique

  179. ability to make a lot of money. And that also means God's given

  180. me a unique calling to give a lot of money away.

  181. And so my calling in life, my career, is to be a professional

  182. philanthropist. But the problem is not having

  183. money. The problem is when money has

  184. you. That's what Jesus is warning us

  185. about, that when you and I trust money to be the place where we

  186. go to bring comfort and refreshment to our lives,

  187. there's a warning sign there. You will only get as much as

  188. money can buy you for as long as money can buy it.

  189. And what money can buy is never going to truly last.

  190. Now, in my experience, money is one of those topics that in

  191. North America we don't like to talk about.

  192. Certainly in church we don't like to talk about it.

  193. And also in my experience, most of us live from the sense of I

  194. need to figure out how to get more money so I can live.

  195. But we never really ask ourselves the question, would

  196. Jesus say that I am rich? Would Jesus, what would Jesus be

  197. warning me about in my own heart right now related to money?

  198. We, we rarely ask ourselves that question.

  199. Whether you're a new Christian or you've been a Christian for a

  200. long time, money seems to be a blind spot in our lives.

  201. And a lot of times we convince ourselves we're fine when it

  202. comes to honour and God with our finances.

  203. So I want to give you some kind of diagnostic questions.

  204. I want you to think about these questions to maybe do a little

  205. bit of a heart check of maybe is this warning from Jesus applying

  206. to you. You might be sitting here today

  207. and maybe you're not rich yet, but you believe you are

  208. convincing your heart of hearts that I will be happy and

  209. satisfied in life as long as I can make this much money.

  210. And so everything in your life is focused on how do I build my

  211. career to that next level? How do I get more money into my

  212. bank account? You're obsessed almost with the

  213. point of how do I get more money.

  214. If you are in that place where you are almost obsessed with I

  215. don't have enough, how do I always get more money has a hold

  216. on you. If you can pay for that dream

  217. vacation or that car that you've always wanted or the house that

  218. you've always dreamed of or maybe the cottage that you've

  219. always wanted, but you don't have enough money to truly be

  220. generous to help those who are poor to give money to God and

  221. His ministry. Money has a hold on you.

  222. Honestly, I I've met a lot of people who do have financial

  223. means By God's standards, you are rich and you, you.

  224. When I talk to them about money, quite often they'll say to me,

  225. Kirk, I give a percentage of my income to help people.

  226. I give a percentage of my income to the church.

  227. I give my percentage of my income to ministries.

  228. I want to make sure that the organizations I support, the

  229. church that I'm a part of, that they've got enough money to

  230. reach the budget. So I give enough money to make

  231. sure that they reach the budget. And I want to say if you're

  232. using an organization's budget or a here's a percentage of my

  233. income that I'm going to give, there is a chance that money has

  234. a hold on you. Why?

  235. Because you're using the church's budget as a reason to

  236. not give everything you're capable of giving.

  237. The mission needs to drive your giving.

  238. Your generosity needs to drive your giving far more than did we

  239. reach a budget. If Jesus wanted you to sell

  240. everything that you own in order to follow him, would you?

  241. You might go, Well, Jesus would never ask me to do that, but he

  242. did ask someone to do that in a rich young ruler.

  243. But let's say he doesn't ask you to do that.

  244. Let's say Jesus wanted to live on, wanted you just to live on

  245. whatever you need to live on. So he's going to give you enough

  246. money for you to live on whatever you need.

  247. But then he wanted you to give away the rest, Would you?

  248. If if Jesus wanted you to give up some of your investment

  249. portfolio or your vacation for next year, or spend a little

  250. less on that renovation so you can give a lot more to God's

  251. mission in the world, would you? And if not, you have to ask

  252. yourself, does money have a hold on you?

  253. And Jesus is going to return to this theme again and again as we

  254. walk through Luke. So I don't want to pile on too

  255. much on money, but money is one of those places we don't like

  256. other people having an opinion on.

  257. We don't like it when people talk about that.

  258. But I want you to know Jesus is not giving you his opinion here.

  259. He's giving you a warning of the consequences and the limitations

  260. of putting your hopes and what money can give you.

  261. Because when money has your heart, it is limiting your

  262. ability to discover and walk in and experience the depths of the

  263. comfort and the peace and the rest that can only come from

  264. Jesus. Money is one of those ways that

  265. we pursue life on our own terms. And Jesus also warns us that

  266. living for yourself is going to ultimately be devastating.

  267. In verse 25, when he talks about those who are full and those who

  268. are laughing, what he's doing is he's, he's warning people about

  269. a self satisfied and self indulgent lifestyle.

  270. He he's calling out people who do what they want, when they

  271. want, how they want. And he's warning people, this is

  272. going to end badly. But you, you might sit there and

  273. go, man, my life is good, my life is full.

  274. I got so many blessings. It's all good, he's saying, but

  275. if your hope is in that and how good your life is, there is

  276. coming a day when your life is just going to end up hungry.

  277. You might feel like I, I've built all this stuff in my life,

  278. I've been able to achieve all these things.

  279. I've built this on my own terms. And Jesus is warning us, if

  280. that's the core direction of your life, that you're just

  281. going to do things on your own terms, you will be devastated by

  282. the end result. And while not all of us are

  283. rich, all of us have lived in a culture where the predominant

  284. philosophy of life in Canada has been what's called secular

  285. humanism. Here's how a website

  286. calledsecularhumanism.org defines humanism.

  287. Secular humanism incorporates the Enlightenment principle of

  288. individualism, increasingly empowering each of us to set the

  289. terms of his or her own life. We live in a culture that has

  290. said, you go ahead and set the terms of your own life.

  291. You decide what you need to make yourself happy, comfortable,

  292. find peace, find joy, find rest. You set those terms for

  293. yourself. And even though most of us in

  294. this room would say I'm not a secular humanist, many of us

  295. live like we are. We set the terms of our own

  296. lives. We've become consumers in all of

  297. life. Everyday you're bombarded with

  298. commercials and content designed to say to you, here's what you

  299. need, let me give you what you need, let me give you what you

  300. want. And we've bought into that

  301. message. We're soon, we start to think

  302. that everybody needs to give me what I want, when I want, how I

  303. want it. And it's become so normalized.

  304. Consumerism has become so normalized that we carry it into

  305. everything in our lives and we don't even realize it.

  306. We don't even pay attention to it.

  307. I, I hear people say all the time, Hey, Kirk, I, I want

  308. friendships. I want deep friendships with

  309. other people, but they have to be able to meet on this day of

  310. the week at this time of the day and they need to like this kind

  311. of coffee and, and, and I don't want to get too deep because

  312. that's way too time consuming if they need my help with

  313. something. But I really want deep

  314. friendships. No, you don't.

  315. You don't. You just want some companionship

  316. when it suits you. That's living life on your own

  317. terms in marriages. I hear people in marriages will

  318. live with the mindset of, hey, if I'm not getting what I want

  319. from my spouse, if if my spouse doesn't like the fact that I

  320. work too much or I have too much to drink, or I spend too much

  321. money, my spouse doesn't like the fact that I like to look at

  322. porn all the time. It really doesn't matter because

  323. it's what makes me happy. I'll do what I want to do.

  324. We do it with our sexuality. I'll do whatever I want to do

  325. because that's what's going to fulfill me.

  326. Even at church, we live with a mindset sometimes that says,

  327. hey, I'm only going to participate in this activity or

  328. event. As long as it's something I'm

  329. going to have fun at or people that I know and like are going

  330. to be there, that's my criteria for showing up.

  331. And I could go on and on and giving you examples.

  332. Now we might think to ourselves like, what's so wrong with

  333. living for myself? Nobody else is looking out for

  334. me, so somebody has to look out for me.

  335. But here's what happens when you set the terms of your own life.

  336. When you only look out for yourself, you are living like a

  337. functional atheist because you end up living like you don't

  338. really need God, or you only need God in certain parts of

  339. your life when something's going wrong and you need him to show

  340. up. You pick and choose the parts of

  341. your life where God gets to be God.

  342. And the truth is, we all have a God, and there's only room for

  343. one God in your life. Whoever or whatever is at the

  344. center of your life is who you are serving.

  345. They are your God. When you live for yourself,

  346. you've made the decision whether you've used the Word or not.

  347. But when you live for yourself, you've made the decision that

  348. you are God. You set the rules of what's

  349. going to give your life meaning and purpose and satisfaction

  350. when you live for yourself. You decide, this is how I'm

  351. going to spend my time and how I'm going to spend my money.

  352. And the warning of Jesus here in this passage is simply this.

  353. The God of your life is going to take you somewhere.

  354. The only question is, where's the God of your life taking you?

  355. What's the end of the story that the God of your life is taking

  356. you towards? What's the promise at the end of

  357. that story? If you're trying to find life in

  358. anyone other than Jesus, Jesus is warning you here that you

  359. will be devastated by the end result.

  360. Now, some of you, you're here today because you see it.

  361. You, you've bought the message of setting life on your own

  362. terms. And you, you've seen the

  363. results. You're looking at the results in

  364. your own life and you're asking bigger questions and you're

  365. saying there's got to be such a better way to live than

  366. everything I've been taught. And I want you to know the

  367. answer is, yeah, there is a better way to live.

  368. Sometimes we go from one extreme, if I want to do life my

  369. own way to another extreme, the opposite extreme, which is I

  370. just want everyone to like me. And so then we end up becoming

  371. people pleasers in everything, which leads to the final warning

  372. of Jesus being popular and well liked won't matter in the end.

  373. That's what he says in verse 26. Jesus gives this warning that

  374. there's a danger when everyone speaks well of you.

  375. Now, at first that seems like a strange warning.

  376. Why? Why wouldn't you want everyone

  377. to speak well of you? Why wouldn't you want everyone

  378. to like you? And then he compares how much

  379. people like you to the way that people have treated false

  380. prophets in the past. You know what false prophets do

  381. really well? They only tell people what they

  382. want to hear. False prophets at the end of the

  383. day are people pleasers. And you might think, well, but

  384. doesn't Jesus want me to serve people?

  385. Doesn't he want me to be nice? And the answer is yes, of course

  386. he does. But serving people is not the

  387. same thing as being a people pleaser.

  388. And a lot of us have become people pleasers.

  389. At the core, people pleasing is actually another way of living

  390. for yourself, because people pleasers do everything they can

  391. to make other people happy. For one motivation.

  392. I just want them to like me, so I'll do whatever I need to do to

  393. get other people to like me. People who serve are different.

  394. People who serve do everything to make the other person's life

  395. better, even if the other person doesn't like some parts of the

  396. journey. I I was in the hospital a week

  397. ago with kidney stones. It's not fun and the doctor,

  398. like there are things that happen when you go into the

  399. hospital that you don't like, but you need it in order to get

  400. better. And people who serve live with

  401. that mentality. I don't care if you don't like

  402. me in the moment. I care more about your

  403. well-being. If you really love and serve

  404. people, you are going to have times where you have to have

  405. difficult conversations. And the single most important

  406. conversation that you may ever have is that the other person

  407. needs a savior. Remember I said earlier that

  408. Jesus is looking at the opposite side of the things he talked

  409. about and what we looked at last week.

  410. He's, he's holding up two sides of the same coin in these

  411. verses. And last week he said that you

  412. are blessed when people hate you, exclude you, insult you

  413. because of your faith in Jesus, because of who you are as a

  414. disciple of Jesus. But now he is giving the

  415. opposite side of the story. And what he's doing is he's

  416. giving us a warning on being silent as followers of Jesus,

  417. that if we never take a stand for anything, we are falling

  418. into this warning that Jesus is giving.

  419. Many years ago I was interacting with a well known broadcaster

  420. who also happened to be a Christian and everybody loved

  421. this guy. Everybody thought he was just

  422. the nicest guy in the world, that his his coworkers thought

  423. he was such a great person to work with.

  424. But then I remember one of his coworkers coming up to me and

  425. said, Kirk, that guy's a Christian.

  426. I had no idea that he was a Christian.

  427. I thought, man, you spent all that time with someone and you

  428. had no idea they followed Jesus. It is awesome church that people

  429. think you're a good person, that they think you're a great

  430. person. It's a great start.

  431. You should not be a jerk. If you're a jerk, that's a whole

  432. other problem. But if the only thing that the

  433. people around you know about you is that you're a really nice

  434. person, then it's one of life's greatest tragedy tragedies.

  435. This warning from Jesus forces us to ask the question, What

  436. good have you really done for the people around you if you

  437. haven't pointed them to Jesus? Because every single good thing

  438. you've ever done for other people can only be temporary.

  439. Don't be the Christian who is so well liked that they are not

  440. fully known. Care for people enough to talk

  441. about the things that matter most, and there's nothing more

  442. important than the state of people's souls.

  443. When you take everything that Jesus is talking about in these

  444. verses here, here's the bottom line of what He's telling us.

  445. Don't let the good life become more important to you than

  446. eternal life. I want to show you something to

  447. illustrate what I'm talking about.

  448. I saw this illustration a number of years ago from a pastor named

  449. Francis Chan and asked Paige to come on out and help me with

  450. this. I want you to imagine that life

  451. is like this rope and we got a knot in our lives.

  452. It's OK. Don't worry about it.

  453. We get the idea. No, forget it.

  454. Keep pulling. Why don't you imagine that life

  455. is like, There we go. Imagine that life is like this

  456. rope. And I'm just going to pull this

  457. up a little bit. See this, This rope represents

  458. the life that you are always meant for.

  459. It's eternal life. You are always meant to have

  460. eternal life. But most of us, we live our

  461. lives in this space. In this space.

  462. This red tape represents the years of your life that you have

  463. here on this earth. If you live to be the same age

  464. as the life life expectancy in Canada, you will live to be

  465. about 82 years old. And so most of us make our

  466. decisions, make our choices, live our lives from the

  467. perspective of how can I get everything done that I want to

  468. get done? How can I achieve and succeed

  469. within those 82 years that I have on this earth?

  470. And maybe you're not even thinking that far in advance.

  471. Maybe you're just thinking about like this little window here

  472. that's like the next three years of your life.

  473. How, how can I just make it in the next three years of my life?

  474. What are my goals in those three years?

  475. So you become obsessed and consumed with those next three

  476. years. Maybe if you're in rough enough

  477. shape, if, if life is hard enough, you're not thinking

  478. about even three years, you're just thinking about one week or

  479. one day. How do I just make it through

  480. today? And what Jesus is coming around

  481. and saying to us is when you live your life from the

  482. perspective of just these years, you're going to make choices a

  483. certain way. When you live your life with

  484. eternity in mind, you're going to make a whole different set of

  485. choices with your life. The warning is when you only

  486. live in this space, it has limitations.

  487. It also has consequences. When you live with eternity in

  488. mind, it changes everything. It changes how you are going to

  489. live every moment of your life. Last week when we looked at the

  490. people who were blessed, even though their life was rough,

  491. they were blessed not because of the moment they found themselves

  492. in. They're blessed because of the

  493. bigger picture of who they are as citizens of God's Kingdom.

  494. They know that the end, that the story that they're in today is

  495. not the end of the story because there's all of eternal life

  496. still waiting. And when you are here in this

  497. moment today, on the opposite side of the coin, the warnings

  498. of Jesus, is that living your life when there's only 80 years

  499. to life, there's so much damage to your soul.

  500. If life is only 80 years, of course you're going to look to

  501. make as much money and have as much fun as you can.

  502. If life is only 80 years, of course you're going to do things

  503. your own way so you can experience the best life

  504. possible. If life is only 80 years, of

  505. course you're going to do everything to just get people to

  506. like you. Because really, I don't want

  507. people to not like me. But Jesus came to show us that

  508. life is not only 80 years. Life was always meant to be

  509. eternal. If you're here today and you are

  510. not yet a believer in Jesus, John chapter 3 verse 16 says

    John 3:16

  511. that God so loved you that he gave his only Son, that if you

  512. believe in him and follow him, you will not perish.

  513. You will not die. 80 years is not the end of your story.

  514. You will have everlasting life. And if you're already a disciple

  515. of Jesus, eternal life is not meant to be something that

  516. happens right after we die. Eternal life is meant to be

  517. something we experience right now.

  518. In John 17 verse 3, Jesus described eternal life as this,

    John 17:3

  519. that they know God the Father. Eternal life is not an event.

  520. It's a relationship with God. It's knowing Him intimately,

  521. powerfully in your life. It's my brothers and sisters in

  522. Christ Jesus. Our Savior and our King is

  523. warning us today. Stop living like you've only got

  524. 80 years to live. So many of us, we are so caught

  525. up in all the things that the world says is important and you

  526. don't even have time to read your Bible or pray you.

  527. You say you can't wait to have eternal life with God, but you

  528. can't spend any time talking to Him now.

  529. Why do you want to spend eternal life with someone that you can't

  530. bother talking to today? For some of us, our, our primary

  531. goal has become how much money can I make and how much fun can

  532. I have? And God becomes a secondary part

  533. of our lives. And when we, when that happens,

  534. you know what we're saying. I need this life to give me

  535. something more than God can give me.

  536. And you're doing damage to your own soul when you do that.

  537. I, I know there's a lot of us who are struggling in different

  538. areas, but sometimes we're struggling in part because we're

  539. choosing to do life on our own terms instead of being shaped by

  540. Jesus. There are a lot of marriages in

  541. our church that are struggling. And I got to tell you, in many

  542. cases it's because you're choosing to do things on your

  543. own terms instead of Jesus way. We have an equipped class

  544. starting next month for marriages.

  545. You need to register if you want to be able to learn how to do

  546. marriage the way that Jesus wants us to.

  547. So many of us, we are holding on to our riches.

  548. We are pursuing life on our own terms.

  549. We just want to be liked by everyone.

  550. We're living for now instead of living with eternity in mind,

  551. and anywhere that you're focused on the temporary instead of the

  552. eternal is a missed opportunity. Don't ignore the warning of

  553. Jesus. Don't waste your life on things

  554. that only last 80 years. I'm going to ask you to close

  555. your eyes, please. I want to ask you to just take a

  556. moment and ask the Holy Spirit to turn a mirror on your heart

  557. and your mind, to ask the Holy Spirit to do a deep check on

  558. your life. With this question.

  559. Say, God, where am I letting the good life become more important

  560. to me than eternal life? Father, I know that listening to

  561. warnings like this can sometimes be uncomfortable for us.

  562. But God, I am grateful for your faithful, everlasting love that

  563. you care enough about us to warn us of things that can harm our

  564. souls. I pray in the power of the Holy

  565. Spirit you would turn a mirror on my heart, on my mind, on our

  566. hearts and minds as your children, and you would help us.

  567. To see the places where we have placed a higher value on what

  568. the world calls a good life instead of a higher value on

  569. eternal life. Give us a greater vision, God,

  570. of the things that truly matter. Cleanse us from our sins.

  571. Help us, help us, oh God, to be set free from these things that

  572. are holding us back from really knowing you deeply and

  573. intimately in our lives. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

  574. Amen. Let's stand together and sing

  575. this last song.
