  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and each week I share sermons that balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth of the Word of God.

  3. Together, we'll explore Scripture using observation, interpretation, and application.

  4. This helps us discover practical ways to live out our faith every single day.

  5. Let's dive in together into God's Word.

  6. Alright, well good morning everyone.

  7. What a fun morning we've had so far with all the kiddos and all the energy.

  8. You know, one of the great things I really appreciate just about our church family, our church community, us coming together,

  9. is knowing that kids can run around and be kids.

  10. You do not have to raise your hand when I say this, but I'm sure for a lot of us,

  11. we've been in churches where if a kid runs around or screams a little too loud, they might want you out the door.

  12. Let's be honest here.

  13. But we have to be reminded of how important it is for children to come to know the Lord, even at a young age.

  14. To learn the basic Bible stories, right?

  15. Like the creation account, or Noah, and the flood.

  16. Or even how, well, the Pharaoh, Moses, right?

  17. The story of Joseph, and of course the story of Jesus Christ.

  18. I'm reminded so much of how when Scripture says,

  19. let the little children come to me, when Christ is saying that.

  20. And even as we, as adults, we have our moments where we're like, ah, they're a little too loud.

  21. But it's so important for us as a church community,

  22. as the body of Christ, to let children be children,

  23. but also to instruct them, to show them what it means to love Jesus.

  24. Amen?

  25. So I want us to go ahead and,

  26. today's sermon is titled, There's Still Room.

  27. And we had this activity here where we had the pitcher of water,

  28. the bread basket, and all these different things that are going on.

  29. And, you know, I got to tell you,

  30. I was planning on doing this parable of the great banquet for a while.

  31. Well, God's timing is better than my timing kind of thing.

  32. So it wasn't, it was the hand of God that we were doing,

  33. already planning the great banquet,

  34. and tying this in with children is just a wonderful thing.

  35. So go ahead and turn your Bibles to Luke, chapter 14, verses 12 through 24.

    Luke 14:12–24

  36. And as you're turning there,

  37. you may turn to, it's on page 1038 in your ESVP Bible,

  38. or you're welcome to use whatever Bible of choice,

  39. the KJV, NIV, et cetera, et cetera.

  40. We use the English Standard Version here.

  41. And as you're turning there,

  42. I'm going to go ahead and,

  43. let's open in prayer,

  44. and let's ask God to bless this time together,

  45. that we will know Him, grow in Him,

  46. and be moved to do good in His name.

  47. Dear Lord and Heavenly Father,

  48. we thank You for giving us this time

  49. and this opportunity for us to gather together

  50. to sing these wonderful songs,

  51. lifting Your name on high,

  52. for Your name is the name that is above all names.

  53. We worship You, and we praise You,

  54. and we thank You.

  55. We are in awe and in wonder of who You are,

  56. making the heavens and the earth,

  57. knowing that the heavens declare Your glory,

  58. and that You made each and every one of us

  59. in Your image,

  60. and You call each and every one of us

  61. to this great feast,

  62. to this great banquet,

  63. is something that is extraordinary.

  64. We thank You that we can open Your Word

  65. and read it.

  66. We can observe what's going on

  67. within the pages of Scripture.

  68. We can learn the lessons,

  69. and also we can be moved

  70. to live out this faith.

  71. And Father, I pray,

  72. if there is anyone that needs healing,

  73. let there be healing.

  74. If there's anyone that needs comfort

  75. or understanding,

  76. let it be done according to Your will.

  77. Father, may we be reminded

  78. that no matter where,

  79. what our background is,

  80. what our backstory is,

  81. You call each and every one of us

  82. to know You,

  83. to believe in Your Son, Jesus Christ,

  84. the way, the truth, and the life.

  85. And upon that salvation,

  86. receiving the free gift of salvation,

  87. You call for us to grow in You,

  88. to live it out every day

  89. in our everyday world.

  90. And so be with us this morning

  91. as we go through this parable

  92. of the great banquet.

  93. It is in Jesus' name that we pray.

  94. Can I get an amen?

  95. Amen.

  96. All right.

  97. So are we all there?

  98. All right.

  99. The parable of the great banquet.

  100. Kind of the thing to know is that

  101. this is obviously right after

  102. the parable of the wedding feast,

  103. right?

  104. Talking about humility.

  105. And then we also look at

  106. what's happening after,

  107. which is also talking about

  108. the cost of discipleship,

  109. which is also going on about humility.

  110. So that might have something to do

  111. with what's going on here.

  112. Right?

  113. So the parable of the great banquet.

  114. So starting at verse 12,

  115. he also said to the man

  116. who had invited him,

  117. when you give a dinner

  118. or a banquet,

  119. do not invite your friends

  120. or your brothers

  121. or your relatives

  122. or rich neighbors,

  123. lest they also invite you in return

  124. and you be repaid.

  125. But when you give a feast,

  126. invite who?

  127. The poor.

  128. Who else?

  129. The crippled,

  130. the lame,

  131. and the blind.

  132. And you will be blessed.

  133. Why?

  134. Because they cannot,

  135. what?

  136. Repay you.

  137. For you will be repaid

  138. at the resurrection of the just.

  139. Then you go into verse 15 here.

  140. When one of those

  141. who reclined at table with him

  142. heard these things,

  143. he said to him,

  144. Blessed is everyone

  145. who will eat bread

  146. in the kingdom of God.

  147. It's kind of a random statement,

  148. but it's a statement nonetheless.

  149. Because Jesus is going to clarify this

  150. in a second.

  151. He said to him,

  152. A man once gave a great banquet

  153. and invited many.

  154. And at the time for the banquet,

  155. he sent his servant

  156. to say to those

  157. who had been invited,

  158. Come,

  159. for everything is now ready.

  160. But they all alike

  161. began to do what?

  162. Make excuses.

  163. They said to him,

  164. one of them, right,

  165. I've bought a field

  166. and I must go out and see it.

  167. Please have me excused.

  168. And another said,

  169. I bought what?

  170. Five yokes of oxen, right?

  171. And I go to examine them.

  172. Please have me excused.

  173. And another said,

  174. What happened?

  175. I married a wife

  176. and therefore I cannot come.

  177. So the servant came.

  178. And I mean,

  179. life happens, right?

  180. So a little humor in there, right?

  181. And the master of the house became,

  182. or so the servant came

  183. and reported these things

  184. to his master.

  185. And then the master of the house

  186. became angry

  187. and said to his servant,

  188. Go out quickly

  189. to the streets

  190. and the lanes

  191. of the city

  192. and bring in who?

  193. The poor,

  194. the crippled,

  195. the blind,

  196. and the lame.

  197. There's a pattern here.

  198. We can see that.

  199. And the servant said,

  200. Sir,

  201. what you commanded

  202. has been done.

  203. And there is what?

  204. Still room.

  205. And the master said

  206. to the servant,

  207. Go out to the highways

  208. and hedges

  209. and compel people

  210. to come in

  211. that my house

  212. may be filled.

  213. For I tell you,

  214. none of those men

  215. who were invited

  216. shall taste my banquet.

  217. Why?

  218. Because they rejected

  219. the invitation.

  220. What a very interesting

  221. parable.

  222. Right?

  223. When we're thinking about it,

  224. we already had the parable

  225. of the wedding feast,

  226. right?

  227. Where it's talking about

  228. everyone who exalts himself

  229. will be humble

  230. and he who humbles himself

  231. will be exalted.

  232. We have what appears

  233. to be a dinner scene

  234. that's going on.

  235. There's a man

  236. that's inviting him

  237. to this,

  238. kind of this dinner party

  239. that's going on.

  240. There's a distinction here

  241. between a dinner

  242. and a great banquet

  243. that we find later on

  244. in the verses.

  245. You see,

  246. we live in this kind of world

  247. where,

  248. well,

  249. how many of you

  250. have taken someone out

  251. for coffee before?

  252. Or you had lunch together,

  253. right?

  254. We live in this culture

  255. where it's very common,

  256. you scratch my back,

  257. I scratch your back,

  258. right?

  259. You buy me coffee,

  260. eventually you're going to

  261. buy me coffee,

  262. kind of thing,

  263. right?

  264. That's the kind of world

  265. that we live in.

  266. But that's not what Christ

  267. is talking about here

  268. in this scene.

  269. He's talking about something

  270. that is far greater

  271. than just buying coffee

  272. or having lunch together.

  273. I know some of us

  274. may not have had breakfast,

  275. so we might be hungry

  276. when I'm mentioning food.

  277. I apologize in advance here.

  278. But it's so interesting

  279. that one of the things

  280. that we can see

  281. when we are thinking

  282. of parables,

  283. when we're thinking

  284. of how Jesus is talking

  285. to the Jewish people

  286. and their understanding

  287. of the world,

  288. it was very common

  289. to talk about things

  290. that were small

  291. that gets magnified

  292. into the larger,

  293. from the lesser

  294. to the larger.

  295. That was very common.

  296. And so what you see here

  297. is a smaller dinner

  298. compared to a great banquet.

  299. And in here,

  300. it's saying here,

  301. Jesus attends the dinner party,

  302. right?

  303. He challenges the norm.

  304. He's going from

  305. that cultural meal,

  306. having a meal together.

  307. We all love

  308. having meals together.

  309. I sure hope that we do.

  310. Or at least with people

  311. that we like, right?

  312. Especially our family.

  313. We all love our families.

  314. Amen?

  315. Right?

  316. Talking to a kingdom invitation, though.

  317. So there's a difference

  318. between the common dinner,

  319. the common luncheon

  320. in our own context,

  321. or a common meeting up

  322. for coffee

  323. and a banquet.

  324. So in this world,

  325. we buy each other coffee.

  326. But when it comes

  327. to the kingdom of God,

  328. there's still room

  329. for everyone.

  330. So when we think

  331. of this table

  332. that Amber had set up,

  333. that's something that

  334. we can initially see

  335. right away within the text.

  336. And this isn't the only time

  337. that Jesus was using a banquet

  338. to talk about the kingdom.

  339. If you think of Matthew 22

  340. and the wedding feast,

  341. right?

  342. Some rejected.

  343. Then all was invited.

  344. Right?

  345. It's starting from something small

  346. and it goes to something

  347. much larger in scale.

  348. When you think of Luke chapter 15,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  349. the parable of the prodigal son,

  350. where the father throws

  351. a banquet for all,

  352. even the unexpected.

  353. You see a pattern

  354. that happens within Scripture

  355. because let us remember,

  356. we look at the context

  357. within what's going on

  358. within the story,

  359. within the pages of Scripture,

  360. but we also look at

  361. where else do we see

  362. this in Scripture?

  363. In Matthew 25,

  364. when I did the message

  365. on the parable

  366. of the ten virgins,

  367. there's the wedding feast

  368. where the virgins

  369. are waiting in anticipation

  370. for the bridegroom

  371. to come onto the scene

  372. because there's a celebration

  373. that's going to be happening.

  374. And so,

  375. what do we see here?

  376. Jesus is saying,

  377. don't invite people

  378. who can repay you.

  379. Instead,

  380. invite the poor,

  381. invite the crippled,

  382. the lame,

  383. and the blind.

  384. Well,

  385. we can think

  386. even back then,

  387. it doesn't take much

  388. for us to think

  389. that these are

  390. the outcasts of society.

  391. They weren't viewed upon

  392. very favorably back then,

  393. and sadly,

  394. it still happens today.

  395. Are there not people

  396. in society

  397. and in everyday living

  398. that you just don't

  399. want to deal with them?

  400. You just don't.

  401. They may not smell right.

  402. They may not.

  403. They may look funny.

  404. They may be the outcasts

  405. of society.

  406. But yet here,

  407. it's talking about

  408. when it goes into

  409. that parable,

  410. when you give a feast,

  411. invite everybody,

  412. even the misfits,

  413. even the outcasts

  414. of society.

  415. And perhaps you

  416. have had moments

  417. in your life

  418. where you have felt

  419. like you are an outcast.

  420. Maybe there's something

  421. that's unique about you

  422. where you just don't fit

  423. within the cultural norms

  424. of society.

  425. And so,

  426. true hospitality

  427. is when you're

  428. giving to someone

  429. without the expectation

  430. of receiving

  431. in return.

  432. When we think about it,

  433. we get in the habit of it.

  434. I give you something,

  435. you're going to give me

  436. something back.

  437. But the ability

  438. to be able to give

  439. without the expectation

  440. of receiving

  441. is something

  442. that's far more powerful.

  443. And that's what Jesus

  444. is calling

  445. here in the text.

  446. And so,

  447. we see in verses 14

  448. and,

  449. excuse me,

  450. in 15 to 17,

  451. a very interesting thing

  452. that this guy is saying.

  453. When one of them

  454. reclined at the table,

  455. he's saying,

  456. blessed is everyone

  457. who will eat bread

  458. in the kingdom of God.

  459. It's kind of like saying,

  460. praise God.

  461. Amen.

  462. We're going to eat

  463. at the feast in heaven.

  464. So,

  465. he's not saying something

  466. that's wrong,

  467. necessarily.

  468. He's saying something

  469. that needs to be

  470. spoken to,

  471. though.

  472. So,

  473. Christ wants to

  474. elaborate a little bit

  475. more on what exactly

  476. is going on.

  477. He's responding

  478. with the story.

  479. Yes,

  480. that's true.

  481. We praise God

  482. for being able

  483. to eat

  484. in heaven,

  485. so to speak.

  486. But he's showing

  487. the importance

  488. of inviting people

  489. to the banquet.

  490. That there's something

  491. that's much greater.

  492. Is it possible

  493. that this person

  494. might have been,

  495. well,

  496. I'm in.

  497. I'm already good to go.

  498. I'm going to the banquet.

  499. Well,

  500. there is some debate

  501. on that.

  502. We can certainly

  503. come to an easy

  504. conclusion that Christ

  505. is saying,

  506. look,

  507. that's great.

  508. You're going to eat

  509. bread in the kingdom,

  510. but you've got to

  511. invite people.

  512. That's the lesson here.

  513. And so,

  514. we see in this parable

  515. that many are invited.

  516. We have three

  517. rejections here.

  518. Three of them.

  519. Right?

  520. Right?

  521. We have the excuses

  522. that are made.

  523. One person bought

  524. a field.

  525. He's too busy.

  526. Does this remind you

  527. of the Good Samaritan?

  528. Think about it,

  529. right?

  530. They're too busy

  531. with their everyday

  532. obligations that they

  533. couldn't help someone

  534. in need.

  535. But here,

  536. it's,

  537. I'm too busy

  538. to respond to an invitation.

  539. I'm going to give you

  540. an excuse because

  541. I've got other things

  542. to do.

  543. One bought a field,

  544. one bought an oxen,

  545. and one got married.

  546. The thing is,

  547. it's not the reason,

  548. it's the fact that

  549. they're refusing to go.

  550. Do you understand

  551. the difference here?

  552. There's a very big

  553. difference,

  554. right?

  555. We all got reasons,

  556. don't we?

  557. But a refusal to

  558. the banquet in this

  559. context,

  560. there's consequences

  561. to that.

  562. And so,

  563. what Christ is saying

  564. here,

  565. yes,

  566. praise God,

  567. but are you going

  568. to respond,

  569. number one,

  570. to the invitation?

  571. And number two,

  572. are you going to

  573. extend that invitation

  574. to other people?

  575. Are you going to

  576. make excuses?

  577. Are you going to

  578. show up?

  579. And so,

  580. when we think about

  581. it,

  582. the invitation

  583. then widens,

  584. and we see this

  585. with many

  586. different parables,

  587. many different

  588. things in Scripture.

  589. I've mentioned,

  590. what is it,

  591. Daniel chapter 2,

    Daniel 2:35

  592. verse 35,

  593. the stone that

  594. hits the big

  595. statue,

  596. and the statue

  597. crumbles,

  598. and the stone

  599. goes into a

  600. great mountain,

  601. right?

  602. That which is

  603. small expands,

  604. right?

  605. Lesser going to

  606. greater.

  607. In this case,

  608. we are seeing

  609. salvation being

  610. made available

  611. to a select

  612. few,

  613. listen to me,

  614. from a select

  615. few to

  616. everybody.

  617. Does that

  618. make sense,

  619. church?

  620. That's what

  621. we're seeing

  622. here.

  623. The invitation

  624. saying,

  625. you know,

  626. I'm going to

  627. only invite

  628. five people

  629. here.

  630. That's it.

  631. They said,

  632. no.

  633. I'm still going

  634. to have a party

  635. going on here,

  636. and I'm going

  637. to invite everybody.

  638. I'm going to

  639. invite the

  640. misfits.

  641. I'm going to

  642. invite the

  643. lame and the

  644. blind,

  645. the crippled,

  646. the poor.

  647. So the

  648. servant goes

  649. out into the

  650. highways,

  651. into the

  652. hedges,

  653. and it's so

  654. fascinating when

  655. the master is

  656. saying,

  657. so that my

  658. house will be

  659. filled.

  660. Well,

  661. you got a lot

  662. of room if

  663. you're going to

  664. invite everybody,

  665. but it goes to

  666. show the

  667. abundance of

  668. God's grace.

  669. That's actually

  670. what leads us

  671. then into the

  672. interpretation,

  673. right?

  674. We read the

  675. text,

  676. we look at

  677. what's going

  678. on initially,

  679. we then go

  680. on for our

  681. own spiritual

  682. walk and

  683. our growth

  684. in the

  685. Lord.

  686. What are

  687. the lessons

  688. that we

  689. can learn?

  690. Number one

  691. is that God's

  692. kingdom is

  693. abundant grace.

  694. Knowing that

  695. Christ died

  696. for the

  697. ungodly,

  698. as Romans

  699. 5,

  700. 6-8

  701. mentions,

  702. or even

  703. Isaiah 55,

  704. many of you

  705. know that

  706. verse,

  707. come all

  708. who are

  709. thirsty,

  710. right?

  711. Without

  712. money,

  713. without

  714. price.

  715. The

  716. invitation

  717. is,

  718. look,

  719. you don't

  720. have to

  721. have money.

  722. You don't

  723. have to

  724. be in

  725. perfect

  726. health.

  727. You don't

  728. have to

  729. be married,

  730. right?

  731. The

  732. invitation

  733. is for

  734. everyone

  735. to respond

  736. to the

  737. call that

  738. Christ has

  739. for every

  740. single one

  741. of it.

  742. And what

  743. does that

  744. response look

  745. like?

  746. Believing

  747. in the

  748. death,

  749. burial,

  750. and resurrection

  751. of Jesus

  752. Christ.

  753. Making

  754. that decision

  755. to say

  756. yes to

  757. Christ,

  758. that Christ

  759. is what

  760. you need,

  761. is all

  762. that you

  763. need when

  764. it comes

  765. to eternal

  766. salvation.

  767. And consider

  768. that when I

  769. talk about

  770. abundant

  771. grace,

  772. it's extended,

  773. it doesn't

  774. run out.

  775. Now we know

  776. there's time

  777. that ends,

  778. sure,

  779. but we know

  780. that,

  781. well,

  782. saying things

  783. like,

  784. well,

  785. salvation's

  786. only available

  787. to an

  788. exclusive group

  789. of people,

  790. a certain

  791. demographic,

  792. or a certain

  793. culture,

  794. or a certain

  795. race.

  796. No,

  797. it is

  798. available for

  799. everyone.

  800. The second

  801. thing then

  802. is,

  803. well,

  804. a little

  805. more blunt

  806. here,

  807. don't make

  808. excuses.

  809. Respond.

  810. Because Christ

  811. is showing

  812. the,

  813. right at the

  814. very end,

  815. I tell you,

  816. none of those

  817. men who are

  818. invited shall

  819. taste my

  820. banquet.

  821. That's not

  822. the easy

  823. thing,

  824. but it

  825. is the

  826. truth

  827. nonetheless.

  828. Maybe you

  829. identify as

  830. one of the

  831. people who's

  832. been making

  833. excuses.

  834. Knock it

  835. off.

  836. Respond.

  837. Say yes

  838. to the

  839. invitation.

  840. In Luke

    Luke 8:14

  841. chapter 8

  842. verse 14

  843. where there's

  844. reference that's

  845. talking about

  846. being choked

  847. up by

  848. life's worries,

  849. right?

  850. Riches or

  851. possessions.

  852. Well,

  853. there's a

  854. famous saying,

  855. you can't

  856. take it with

  857. you.

  858. We have to

  859. remember,

  860. our soul

  861. is what we

  862. have to

  863. consider.

  864. That which

  865. is eternal.

  866. Philippians

    Philippians 3:8

  867. chapter 3

  868. verse 8

  869. when the

  870. apostle Paul

  871. is saying,

  872. I consider

  873. everything a

  874. loss compared

  875. to knowing

  876. Christ.

  877. Knowing

  878. Christ is

  879. the greatest

  880. treasure,

  881. right?

  882. Just like we

  883. talked about

  884. the pearl

  885. of great

  886. value or

  887. the hidden

  888. treasure that

  889. we are to

  890. seek Christ

  891. with everything

  892. that we

  893. are in the

  894. same way as

  895. X marks the

  896. spot and you

  897. are to go

  898. after that

  899. treasure.

  900. And so

  901. in this,

  902. ask yourself

  903. that question,

  904. are you making

  905. excuses or are

  906. you not?

  907. Maybe you

  908. identify and

  909. say, you know

  910. what, I have

  911. been making

  912. excuses.

  913. I'm ready to

  914. respond to

  915. God's call in

  916. receiving salvation

  917. or even further,

  918. I'm ready to

  919. respond to God's

  920. call for my

  921. life.

  922. Maybe you're

  923. wrestling with

  924. something that

  925. you've been

  926. wrestling with for

  927. a while.

  928. You know God's

  929. calling you to do

  930. something or to

  931. stop doing

  932. something.

  933. And you say,

  934. not yet, God.

  935. Maybe you

  936. identify with that.

  937. Or if you

  938. don't, maybe

  939. you've had a

  940. moment like

  941. that.

  942. I know I

  943. have for

  944. sure.

  945. The third

  946. thing then is

  947. that God's

  948. heart is for

  949. all, even

  950. what?

  951. The misfits.

  952. How many of

  953. you watch that?

  954. There's that

  955. old Christmas

  956. story.

  957. You guys know

  958. where I'm going

  959. with this.

  960. The island of

  961. what?

  962. The island of

  963. misfits, right?

  964. And the one

  965. that always stuck

  966. with my mind

  967. all these years

  968. ever since a

  969. kid is the

  970. train that had

  971. the square

  972. wheels, right?

  973. And it's a

  974. cute, if you

  975. haven't watched

  976. it, you should

  977. watch it sometime,

  978. right?

  979. The island of

  980. misfits where

  981. they're the

  982. cast outs of

  983. society, right?

  984. Nobody wants a

  985. train that has

  986. square wheels.

  987. Are you kidding

  988. me?

  989. That's kind of

  990. the attitude you

  991. see in the

  992. movie.

  993. But in the

  994. same way, for a

  995. lot of us, we

  996. may have felt

  997. like we are on

  998. the island of

  999. misfits, as

  1000. it were.

  1001. Some of us

  1002. have had those

  1003. moments where,

  1004. you know, I

  1005. don't fit the

  1006. square hole.

  1007. Maybe I don't

  1008. fit that.

  1009. Maybe there's

  1010. something that's

  1011. different about

  1012. you or whatever.

  1013. We are all

  1014. different and

  1015. maybe you just

  1016. stick out.

  1017. And that's

  1018. okay.

  1019. Knowing the

  1020. fact that God's

  1021. invitation for

  1022. salvation is for

  1023. everyone, including

  1024. the misfits, is

  1025. remarkable.

  1026. Because I'm sure

  1027. that in our own

  1028. lives, many of us

  1029. have felt those

  1030. moments where we

  1031. felt isolated, where

  1032. we felt like we

  1033. just don't, we

  1034. don't know where

  1035. we fit in.

  1036. It's just like what

  1037. I've told you, and

  1038. I'll say it before,

  1039. and I'll say it

  1040. again.

  1041. Man will fail

  1042. you.

  1043. God will never

  1044. fail you, though.

  1045. And no matter

  1046. what hurt, or

  1047. what people say, or

  1048. what people do

  1049. against you that

  1050. has affected your

  1051. life, God

  1052. remains as the

  1053. constant, everlasting

  1054. to everlasting.

  1055. Our Lord remains

  1056. the same.

  1057. He does not

  1058. change.

  1059. We certainly

  1060. do.

  1061. And I'm

  1062. certainly glad I'm

  1063. not God.

  1064. Aren't you glad

  1065. you're not God?

  1066. I'm glad that God

  1067. forgives me of my

  1068. sins.

  1069. I'm glad that the

  1070. Lord loves me.

  1071. And he's still

  1072. offering that

  1073. invitation.

  1074. We think of how

  1075. often, how quickly

  1076. for us, we might

  1077. say, you know

  1078. what, I don't love

  1079. you anymore because

  1080. you did me dirty.

  1081. You did me wrong.

  1082. But to know that

  1083. God's love is much

  1084. greater, continuing

  1085. to extend that

  1086. invitation.

  1087. And even if you

  1088. are, well, living

  1089. in sin, as it

  1090. were, or you're

  1091. distant, or you're

  1092. in darkness, or

  1093. you're separated

  1094. from the presence

  1095. of God, you can

  1096. still come back

  1097. to him.

  1098. And that's what's

  1099. powerful.

  1100. No matter what you

  1101. have been through,

  1102. or what you are

  1103. going through, or

  1104. what people have

  1105. said, or what

  1106. people have done,

  1107. the invitation is

  1108. still there.

  1109. Let us remember, the

  1110. shepherd leaves the

  1111. ninety-nine for the

  1112. one.

  1113. Let us also

  1114. remember, it's a

  1115. Luke chapter five,

  1116. where Christ is

  1117. saying, I came not

  1118. for the healthy, but

  1119. for the sick.

  1120. And the idea of

  1121. that is, well, are

  1122. any of us actually

  1123. healthy?

  1124. But we think about

  1125. that.

  1126. That God is doing

1127. so much for us to

  1128. respond.

  1129. This leads us, then,

  1130. into the application,

  1131. then.

  1132. Right?

  1133. We observe the text.

  1134. We look at what's

  1135. going on within the

  1136. context.

  1137. We look at the

  1138. connections.

  1139. We look at the

1140. lessons we can have in

  1141. our own spiritual

  1142. walk.

1143. And what do we do

  1144. about this?

1145. And number one is to

  1146. remove the what,

  1147. church?

  1148. The obstacles or

  1149. the excuses.

  1150. Doesn't this remind

1151. you of the parable of

  1152. the soils?

  1153. The four soils?

  1154. Some of the soils

  1155. had weeds.

  1156. Some of the soils

  1157. had other things in

  1158. it, rocks and stuff

  1159. that needed to be

  1160. removed.

1161. Do you see how it's

  1162. connected here?

  1163. Remove those

  1164. obstacles.

  1165. Remember, the weeds

  1166. representing sin.

  1167. The obstacles, well,

  1168. in this case,

  1169. representing excuses.

  1170. Think about that.

  1171. Remove the obstacles

  1172. and remove the

  1173. excuses.

  1174. Right?

  1175. Hebrews 12, 1,

  1176. throw off everything

  1177. that hinders you.

  1178. Or Matthew 10, 39,

  1179. whoever finds his

  1180. life will lose it.

  1181. Whoever loses his

  1182. life will find it.

  1183. We know about that.

  1184. It's about surrender.

  1185. Remember, when we're

  1186. considering those other,

  1187. the cost of discipleship

1188. and the parable of the

  1189. wedding feast, it's about

  1190. humility and recognizing

1191. that Jesus Christ is what

  1192. you need.

1193. You can't do it on your

  1194. own.

  1195. It's about recognizing who

  1196. Christ is.

1197. So maybe you need to ask

  1198. yourself, what's keeping

1199. you from the table that God

  1200. has set before you?

1201. Only you can answer that.

  1202. I wish I could answer on

  1203. your behalf.

  1204. Maybe not.

1205. But in any case, only you

  1206. can answer that.

1207. The second thing, then, is

  1208. to accept the invitation

  1209. and what?

  1210. Respond.

  1211. Right?

1212. Many of you know the

  1213. Revelation 3, 20, right?

  1214. Where it's, I stand at the

1215. door and knock, and we see

1216. so many pictures of Jesus

  1217. patiently knocking at the

  1218. door when we're realizing

  1219. that it's referencing

  1220. judgment that's about to

  1221. happen.

  1222. But it's still a good

  1223. thought nonetheless.

  1224. Right?

1225. The imagery of the Lord

  1226. knocking at the door.

1227. Are you going to open it?

  1228. That's fine.

  1229. That's consistent with how

  1230. we understand the Lord.

1231. How is that any different

  1232. than an invitation?

  1233. We think about that.

  1234. Or in 2 Corinthians 6,

    2 Corinthians 6:2

1235. verse 2, that now is the

  1236. time for salvation, just

1237. like we talked about last

  1238. week.

1239. God gives us time, but not

  1240. forever.

1241. And it's up for us to

  1242. respond, well, you better

  1243. do it now.

1244. Better do it now, because you

1245. don't know what tomorrow will

  1246. hold.

1247. So in other words, don't

1248. RSVP later for something that

1249. is ready for you now.

1250. And third and final, be a

  1251. servant who extends the

  1252. invitation.

  1253. What's so remarkable about

1254. this parable is when it

  1255. talks about the servant,

  1256. right?

  1257. The servant that's

  1258. extending the invitation.

1259. Now, some will argue that

1260. this is a representation of

  1261. Christ.

  1262. That's fine.

1263. In the same way that Christ

1264. has extended the invitation to

1265. many and then to all, we

1266. should think about how we can

1267. do that in our lives.

1268. Who can we extend the

1269. invitation to in our own

  1270. lives?

1271. Start small and go big.

1272. Think of your friends, your

1273. relatives, those that you are

  1274. very close with.

1275. And think of how God calls for

1276. us to go out and to make

1277. disciples, declaring the name of

  1278. Jesus Christ.

1279. And let's not forget, we still

1280. live in an everyday world where we

1281. have to work, we have to go to

  1282. school.

  1283. Well, that's why it's important

1284. for us when we consider being an

  1285. ambassador for Christ.

1286. Thinking about what we say to

1287. others and how we conduct

1288. ourselves and what we do, all of

  1289. these things are important.

1290. And so maybe you need to ask

1291. yourself, how can I extend the

1292. invitation through words and even

  1293. through actions?

1294. Let us not forget Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  1295. chapter 2, verses 8.

1296. Many of you know 8 through 9, for

1297. by grace you are saved and not by

1298. works, lest any man or lest anyone

  1299. boast.

  1300. Verse 10, don't forget that.

1301. That we are created for good

  1302. works.

1303. Not saved by what we do, we are

1304. saved so that we can do.

  1305. Does that make sense?

1306. Do we understand the difference

  1307. here?

1308. Because that's, little word can

1309. make a huge difference in that,

1310. especially when it comes to

  1311. salvation.

1312. And so, let us remember this

  1313. specific parable.

1314. Think about the activity we just

  1315. did.

1316. How awesome it was for us to go

1317. through these kind of, what is

1318. like a puzzle kind of thing,

  1319. right?

1320. The invitation is still going

  1321. out.

1322. And the idea is that let us

1323. remember, if there's anything to

1324. take away from today, is there is

  1325. still room.

  1326. Respond.

1327. There is still room for you.

1328. There is still room for your

1329. friends and your family and those

  1330. that you know.

1331. Let this be a call for them to

  1332. respond as well.

1333. And so, the question is, will we

  1334. respond accordingly?

1335. The table has been set.

1336. There is an invitation for all of

  1337. us.

1338. Let us respond to God's call for

1339. salvation and God's specific call

  1340. for our lives.

  1341. Let's pray together.

1342. Father, we thank you for this time

1343. for us to gather together as the

  1344. body of Christ.

1345. Father, I pray that we may all take

1346. to heart the importance not only of

1347. the great banquet that you have set,

1348. but also may we appreciate the

1349. importance of the invitation that

1350. your Son has given to all of us.

1351. Father, I pray that if anyone is

1352. making an excuse or there's an

1353. obstacle or whatever it is, that

1354. they may have the tools or someone

1355. to talk to or whatever it is to be

1356. able to no longer have obstacles or

1357. rocks or weeds for their soil, but

1358. they will respond to you.

1359. They will respond to your salvation.

1360. Father, I pray that we as a church,

1361. will grow in a healthy manner, much

1362. like I pray, Father, that each and

1363. every one of us will grow as an

  1364. individual.

1365. And through growth, may we bear

1366. fruit, may we extend the invitation,

1367. and may we live out this faith in

1368. what we say and what we do,

1369. especially when we consider the world

  1370. that we live in.

1371. And Father, I especially would like to

1372. pray for those who attack the

  1373. misfits of society.

1374. We know that your heart is for

  1375. everyone.

1376. And we know as a culture, we tend to,

1377. well, we have our own biases towards

  1378. people.

1379. And you love each and every one of us,

  1380. even the misfits.

1381. May we have a heart that reflects you,

1382. balancing the grace and love that you

1383. give us and the truth of your word.

1384. We say all of this in the name of Jesus

  1385. Christ.

  1386. Amen.

  1387. Amen.

1388. Thank you for listening for this week's

1389. message from Ontario Community Church.
