  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and each week I share sermons that balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth of the Word of God.

  3. Together, we'll explore Scripture using observation, interpretation, and application.

  4. This helps us discover practical ways to live out our faith every single day.

  5. Let's dive in together into God's Word.

  6. Well, good morning, everyone.

  7. I hope all of us are staying cool as the weather is starting to heat up and everything.

  8. I want us to turn our Bibles to the Gospel of Luke as we just had our Scripture reading in Luke chapter 17.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  9. What we have here is we'll be going over the unprofitable servants from verses 7 through 10 in the Gospel of Luke chapter 17.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  10. In order for us to even begin to understand this very heavy, it's simple but yet it's heavy, parable.

  11. I want us to turn there and start in verse 17 here where we see in the first two verses where Christ is saying to his disciples, right?

  12. Talking about the temptations that they are sure to come, right?

  13. Woe to the one through who they come.

  14. It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and cast into the sea.

  15. That's very, very harsh language we're seeing.

  16. But it's a warning from Christ against causing these little ones to stumble.

  17. And this is found after the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

  18. And it's very important for us to consider the context of what is going on here.

  19. That the rich man's sin was making an idol out of money.

  20. And that's something that was very common back then and it is still common even now.

  21. That there are people who they will idolize riches, fame, things that are outside of the Lord.

  22. We have to consider this.

  23. It goes on then into verses 3 and 4, right?

  24. Pay attention to yourself.

  25. If your brother sins, rebuke him.

  26. And if he repents, forgive him.

  27. And if he sins against you seven times in a day and turns to you seven times saying,

  28. I repent, you must forgive him, right?

  29. It's showing the importance of, well, rebuking and repentance, right?

  30. Who here likes being rebuked here, right?

  31. Nobody.

  32. Nobody in that.

  33. But it's showing that when there is wrong that is being done, there's the call for repentance.

  34. There's the call for speaking to that.

  35. Forgive as you have been forgiven, in other words.

  36. Which then is leading us into 5 and 6 as it's kind of paving the way here where the apostles are saying to the Lord,

  37. increase our faith.

  38. And the Lord said, if you add faith like the grain of a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree,

  39. be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.

  40. And that leads us now to this parable of the unworthy servants.

  41. Where we start off where it's saying, will any of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in the field,

  42. come at once and recline at the table.

  43. It's talking about the return of servants.

  44. It's now very commonly in scripture and the biblical culture back then.

  45. The plowing of the field and the tending to the sheep was the most common duty that was expected from a servant.

  46. And so it's very interesting.

  47. We see plowing and shepherding, right?

  48. The breaking the hard ground, the soil as it were.

  49. And of course, shepherding would be caring for and guiding the flock.

  50. So we see that there right away.

  51. It's important for us to see these are a couple of things that were common for servants to have.

  52. Leading into verse 8 then,

  53. will he not rather say to him,

  54. prepare supper for me and dress properly and serve me while I eat and drink and afterward you will eat and drink?

  55. We'll just finish this off.

  56. Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?

  57. So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded,

  58. say we are unworthy servants.

  59. We have only done what was our duty.

  60. It's kind of a strange parable if you think about it.

  61. Well, when we're going back to verse 8,

  62. verse 7 and verse 8,

  63. the servant, he is plowing, he is keeping the sheep.

  64. This idea of reclining at a table,

  65. you see this a few times in scripture.

  66. When you first read it,

  67. you think, okay,

  68. the guy's just,

  69. he's had a hard day at work.

  70. He wants to sit down.

  71. He wants to have some water.

  72. He wants to have a break.

  73. That's not what's being explained here.

  74. The reclining at the table is speaking of a place of honor.

  75. Now, when you read it on the surface,

  76. you get one understanding,

  77. but culturally, reclining at the table is more of the place of honor

  78. where you are being served

  79. rather than just simply sitting in a chair

  80. or sitting on the couch after a hard day's work.

  81. So that's very important for us to see.

  82. Then, of course,

  83. yeah, it says honor, leisure.

  84. It's found in the gospel of Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  85. We're not going to turn there.

  86. 12, 37 and John 13, 23.

  87. So it's saying that there is still work that needs to be done

  88. in the respect that you as a servant

  89. are not being placed in a position of honor.

  90. That's what's being said here.

  91. Now, before the servant eats,

  92. he must serve the master, right?

  93. That's what we're seeing in verse 8.

  94. Will he not rather say to him,

  95. prepare supper for me and dress properly

  96. and serve me while I eat and drink

  97. and what does it say after?

  98. Afterward, you will eat and drink.

  99. So it's showing here.

  100. So the master's not being neglectful.

  101. It's just understand that there's still things

  102. that have to be done in this respect.

  103. And so in verse 9 then,

  104. does he thank the servant

  105. because he did what was commanded?

  106. That's an interesting question.

  107. Well, in this case,

  108. and it's hard for us to read something like this

  109. because we think of servants and slaves

  110. and that kind of language back then,

  111. it's hard for us to understand

  112. in a modern sort of concept that happens.

  113. Well, we don't necessarily have slaves

  114. or servants nowadays,

  115. or at least I hope you don't.

  116. But it's important for us to at least understand

  117. that back then that was more common

  118. in the given culture.

  119. And so what he's saying here

  120. is that the master's not going to give extra favor

  121. for doing what's already meant to be done.

  122. It's kind of like a similar rendering,

  123. a similar theme that we can see would be

  124. if you have a job and you have your employer

  125. and you're expected to do certain things,

  126. well, it's nice to get a pat on the back,

  127. but when you're doing what's already expected of you,

  128. you should see it through to the end, right?

  129. You should complete your job at hand.

  130. That's kind of the only modern parallel

  131. that we could see nowadays

  132. because, again, we don't have servants and slaves anymore,

  133. so it's a little hard for us to understand.

  134. And then, of course, at verse 10,

  135. it closes off,

  136. so you also, when you have done all your commanded,

  137. say we are unworthy servants,

  138. we have done what was our duty.

  139. That's kind of a strange one there.

  140. Being unworthy.

  141. And so, when it's talking about we are unworthy,

  142. it's talking about the word unprofitable.

  143. For those of you who remember the series I did on Philemon,

  144. you had Onesimus,

  145. who was someone,

  146. his name means useless or useful.

  147. He was once useless,

  148. and he became useful.

  149. It's very similar language in that,

  150. that we are unprofitable, right?

  151. So it's similar to what we would find in Philemon.

  152. And so, it's the wordplay.

  153. This parable, then,

  154. even though it may be hard for us to understand,

  155. is very similar when we start connecting the dots

  156. with other parables.

  157. For example,

  158. the parable of the prodigal son.

  159. You remember that story.

  160. The one runs off,

  161. squanders all his money,

  162. and he comes back,

  163. and there's a celebration.

  164. And you had the other brother,

  165. who was rather upset.

  166. And I'll tell you,

  167. I feel like I'm not the only one

  168. who struggled with that parable, right?

  169. We can be honest here.

  170. Well, there's this big celebration

  171. of this son that's returning,

  172. but some of us identify with the other son

  173. that's been there the entire time,

  174. doing what he's supposed to do.

  175. Very similar language

  176. to what we're finding here.

  177. These servants are doing

  178. what they're supposed to do.

  179. They are already within the fold,

  180. within the protection,

  181. within the knowing of the master.

  182. And so, there's no need for celebration.

  183. As hard as it is for us to understand,

  184. and even at times,

  185. well, agree with it,

  186. that's what the Lord is going for in that.

  187. The other thing is,

  188. well, when you think of the parable of the talents,

  189. it's, in other words,

  190. how someone responds

  191. to what the master,

  192. to what God has for your life.

  193. Are you going to do

  194. what the Lord has called you to do,

  195. or are you not?

  196. That's what we have here.

  197. And so,

  198. this then kind of leads us

  199. into our interpretation here.

  200. It's only a couple of verses here

  201. that we're seeing.

  202. Our interpretation then,

  203. or you know what?

  204. Let me go here.

  205. This is our outline.

  206. The servant returns from the field.

  207. The master's orders

  208. to prepare my supper.

  209. There's no extra thanks

  210. for the mere duty.

  211. And the disciples are saying,

  212. we are unprofitable servants,

  213. which is showing this mirroring

  214. for what, one,

  215. a disciple of Christ

  216. is supposed to do.

  217. Now, when you think about it,

  218. I want to stop for a second.

  219. I want you to see the parallel here.

  220. When we're talking about,

  221. because this is very negative language,

  222. it's kind of like,

  223. this is kind of sad.

  224. It's kind of like,

  225. okay,

  226. saying that you're an unworthy servant

  227. and I've only done

  228. what I'm supposed to do.

  229. We have to look at it

  230. as these servants

  231. are known by the master

  232. and the servants are doing

  233. what they are called to do.

  234. And when the disciples,

  235. then,

  236. are saying the same thing,

  237. it's much like how we,

  238. when we are in,

  239. when we are saved by grace

  240. through faith,

  241. there are things that we

  242. ought to do.

  243. Following in the footsteps

  244. of Christ.

  245. And so,

  246. the first point here,

  247. when we go into

  248. our interpretation,

  249. this will make more sense,

  250. that obedience creates

  251. no leverage.

  252. It's not like

  253. these servants

  254. who are already

  255. under the protection,

  256. they're,

  257. you know,

  258. employed,

  259. they're housed,

  260. all these things,

  261. it's not like they can do

  262. something extra

  263. that would make the master

  264. owe them money.

  265. Does that make sense?

  266. And so,

  267. in the same way,

  268. for us being saved

  269. by grace through faith,

  270. we are called

  271. to do good

  272. in the name of Christ,

  273. we are called

  274. to grow in Christ,

  275. but it's not like

  276. we're going to have

  277. leverage against God.

  278. It's not like

  279. we're going to

  280. outperform God.

  281. The Lord has us

  282. covered through

  283. the blood of the Lamb.

  284. The Lord has us

  285. covered.

  286. And us,

  287. like trees,

  288. we are to produce

  289. fruit,

  290. we are to bear

  291. good fruit,

  292. that's part of

  293. being in the vineyard,

  294. being in the care

  295. of the Lord.

  296. So,

  297. that first point there

  298. when it says

  299. obedience creates

  300. no leverage,

  301. even in the context

  302. within this

  303. parable,

  304. even having

  305. the mustard seed

  306. like faith

  307. or constantly

  308. forgiving each other

  309. doesn't create

  310. leverage against God.

  311. okay,

  312. when you're in

  313. the fold,

  314. you are in,

  315. amen?

  316. So,

  317. it's not like,

  318. hey God,

  319. I went above

  320. and beyond

  321. because that's

  322. going to create

  323. a works-based

  324. system.

  325. And that's not

  326. what God is

  327. going for.

  328. Remember the point

  329. when we think

  330. of all of

  331. Christianity

  332. that we are

  333. saved by grace

  334. through faith

  335. that whosoever

  336. believes

  337. shall not perish

  338. but have

  339. eternal life.

  340. and yet

  341. often at times

  342. we still like

  343. to go back

  344. to the old

  345. system

  346. where

  347. look at all

  348. that I'm doing.

  349. I want

  350. extra things.

  351. And what it's

  352. saying here is

  353. well,

  354. you're still

  355. a servant here.

  356. And so,

  357. in other words,

  358. the things that you do

  359. does not create

  360. a debt

  361. that God

  362. can pay

  363. because God's

  364. already paid

  365. the debt.

  366. So,

  367. you don't have

  368. to,

  369. you're still

  370. called to do

  371. things but

  372. just understand

  373. you're not

  374. going to give

  375. God a bill

  376. when he's

  377. already paid

  378. it all.

  379. The second

  380. thing then

  381. is that grace

  382. empowers

  383. our service.

  384. This is a very

  385. powerful thing

  386. that the servant

  387. again already

  388. belongs to the

  389. master.

  390. So often in

  391. scripture,

  392. you see the

  393. apostle Paul

  394. saying that

  395. he is a

  396. slave or

  397. a bond

  398. servant or

  399. he serves

  400. the living

  401. God.

  402. The idea

  403. being that

  404. he belongs

  405. to Christ

  406. and that

  407. he serves

  408. the living

  409. God.

  410. Belonging

  411. to the

  412. Lord,

  413. belonging

  414. to the

  415. master,

  416. we are

  417. protected,

  418. we are

  419. saved,

  420. we are

  421. secure,

  422. and we

  423. are called

  424. to be

  425. healed,

  426. to be

  427. transformed,

  428. to grow,

  429. and to be

  430. moved to

  431. produce fruit.

  432. It's much

  433. like how we

  434. find in

  435. Ephesians,

  436. you are

  437. saved by

  438. grace through

  439. faith,

  440. not by

  441. works so

  442. that no

  443. man may

  444. boast.

  445. It goes

  446. on into

  447. that verse

  448. 10,

  449. we are

  450. saved for

  451. works.

  452. We are

  453. saved so

  454. that we

  455. can do

  456. good for

  457. God's

  458. glory.

  459. And so

  460. whether you

  461. are in

  462. the field

  463. or whether

  464. you are

  465. helping the

  466. flock,

  467. you can

  468. see the

  469. spirituality

  470. in that.

  471. When we

  472. think of

  473. the soil,

  474. breaking

  475. ground,

  476. when we

  477. think of

  478. hardened

  479. hearts and

  480. how God

  481. is working

  482. through you

  483. to change

  484. hardened

  485. hearts to

  486. be soft,

  487. or even

  488. shepherding,

  489. which is

  490. ministering

  491. to people,

  492. showing care

  493. and compassion

  494. to your

  495. neighbor,

  496. your brothers

  497. and sisters

  498. in Christ,

  499. those around

  500. you,

  501. those that

  502. you interact

  503. with.

  504. We are

  505. empowered

  506. because we

  507. can have

  508. confidence in

  509. the living

  510. God,

  511. because we

  512. can have

  513. full confidence

  514. in our

  515. salvation.

  516. that should

  517. be the

  518. greatest

  519. motivator

  520. for us

  521. to act,

  522. to share

  523. in the

  524. gospel message

  525. with others,

  526. to share

  527. in your

  528. testimony.

  529. How has

  530. God worked

  531. in your

  532. life?

  533. Have you

  534. experienced

  535. his healing

  536. or a still

  537. small voice?

  538. Or maybe

  539. just a simple

  540. transformation,

  541. maybe a

  542. simple change

  543. in how

  544. you love

  545. or how

  546. you live

  547. or how

  548. you speak

  549. to others.

  550. Perhaps

  551. it is

  552. important for

  553. you to

  554. take inventory

  555. of these

  556. kind of

  557. things.

  558. The third

  559. thing then

  560. is humility

  561. guards against

  562. what church?

  563. Entitlement.

  564. Now,

  565. it's very

  566. important we

  567. see so much

  568. in scripture

  569. where we

  570. have to be

  571. mindful.

  572. we have

  573. to check

  574. our pride.

  575. There's a

  576. famous saying

  577. that I like

  578. when I first

  579. heard it,

  580. I've never

  581. forgotten it.

  582. It's you

  583. got to check

  584. yourself before

  585. you wreck

  586. yourself.

  587. Right?

  588. You got to

  589. check your

  590. pride.

  591. In other

  592. words,

  593. you have to

  594. check your

  595. heart.

  596. And so

  597. when you

  598. see here

  599. the unprofitable

  600. servants,

  601. it's about

  602. the heart.

  603. Recognizing

  604. that they

  605. are serving

  606. the master

  607. and they

  608. need him.

  609. again,

  610. that's hard

  611. for us

  612. nowadays to

  613. understand.

  614. But back

  615. then,

  616. that made

  617. a lot of

  618. sense.

  619. In other

  620. words,

  621. think of

  622. it as

  623. without the

  624. Lord,

  625. we are

  626. nothing.

  627. We rely

  628. on the

  629. Lord as

  630. the source

  631. of life.

  632. We rely

  633. on the

  634. Lord for

  635. salvation in

  636. Christ.

  637. Christ.

  638. We rely

  639. on the

  640. Lord,

  641. or at

  642. least we

  643. should to

  644. guide us

  645. and to

  646. help mold

  647. us into

  648. who he

  649. wants us

  650. to be.

  651. How much

  652. trust do

  653. you put

  654. in the

  655. Lord?

  656. I can't

  657. answer that

  658. for you.

  659. But it's a

  660. question to

  661. think about.

  662. If we are

  663. to boast,

  664. let us

  665. boast in

  666. the Lord

  667. and not

  668. boasting

  669. in ourselves.

  670. so when

  671. you see

  672. that last

  673. thing,

  674. when you

  675. see that

  676. last verse,

  677. we are

  678. unworthy

  679. servants.

  680. They are

  681. recognizing.

  682. They are

  683. humbling

  684. themselves

  685. before God.

  686. That is

  687. what you're

  688. seeing in

  689. this scene.

  690. We have

  691. only done

  692. what is our

  693. duty.

  694. We have

  695. done what

  696. you have

  697. called us

  698. to do.

  699. It's a

  700. posture

  701. of humility.

  702. They are

  703. considering

  704. their heart

  705. before the

  706. Lord.

  707. Which leads

  708. us then,

  709. what do we

  710. do with

  711. this?

  712. It begins

  713. to make a

  714. lot more

  715. sense.

  716. Because at

  717. first you

  718. read it and

  719. you're like,

  720. okay,

  721. these servants

  722. are just,

  723. they're being

  724. very humble.

  725. But we

  726. start to

  727. see,

  728. a servant

  729. looking towards

  730. his master

  731. is realizing

  732. he is,

  733. in this case,

  734. is thanking

  735. the master

  736. for being,

  737. remember how I

  738. talked about

  739. previously,

  740. you want to

  741. be in the

  742. vineyard?

  743. You want to

  744. be in the

  745. protection of

  746. the Lord?

  747. Well, you

  748. want to be

  749. where God

  750. is.

  751. You want to

  752. serve the

  753. living God.

  754. You want

  755. your life

  756. to reflect

  757. and to

  758. shine the

  759. light of

  760. Christ so

  761. that others

  762. can see.

  763. And so,

  764. what do we

  765. do with

  766. this?

  767. The first

  768. thing is to

  769. develop a

  770. servant's

  771. heart in

  772. prayer.

  773. There's many

  774. of us that

  775. know someone

  776. who has a

  777. hardened heart.

  778. Don't raise

  779. your hand,

  780. but do we

  781. know someone?

  782. You may

  783. know someone

  784. who is

  785. resistant to

  786. God,

  787. is resistant

  788. to Scripture,

  789. is really

  790. resistant to,

  791. well,

  792. any good

  793. thing that

  794. comes from

  795. the Lord.

  796. Hopefully,

  797. it's none

  798. of us here.

  799. But even

  800. if it is,

  801. it is important

  802. for us as

  803. the body of

  804. Christ,

  805. Christ,

  806. as the

  807. church,

  808. to pray

  809. that hardened

  810. hearts will

  811. be softened.

  812. Not only

  813. should we pray

  814. for one

  815. another,

  816. but we

  817. should pray

  818. for our

  819. friends,

  820. our families.

  821. Think of

  822. someone that

  823. you know

  824. who has a

  825. hardened

  826. heart,

  827. and pray for

  828. them.

  829. And if you

  830. realize that

  831. you have a

  832. hardened heart,

  833. praise God.

  834. let this be

  835. a time for

  836. you to

  837. pray to

  838. the Lord

  839. and come

  840. before Him

  841. and ask

  842. for that

  843. heart

  844. transformation.

  845. Because God

  846. is the God

  847. of transformation.

  848. So consider

  849. some prayers

  850. when you wake

  851. up in the

  852. morning.

  853. Father,

  854. show me

  855. what you

  856. have for

  857. me today.

  858. Or in the

  859. evening before

  860. you go to

  861. bed,

  862. the good

  863. that I have

  864. accomplished,

  865. I thank

  866. you for.

  867. It is

  868. yours.

  869. I give

  870. to you

  871. what was

  872. due,

  873. what was

  874. expected.

  875. And I tell

  876. you,

  877. this is a

  878. challenge.

  879. This is not

  880. an easy

  881. thing to

  882. preach upon,

  883. let alone

  884. to implement.

  885. But how

  886. beautiful is

  887. it to

  888. wake up in

  889. the morning

  890. and ask

  891. God to

  892. lead and

  893. guide you?

  894. What do

  895. you want me

  896. to do

  897. today?

  898. How can

  899. I glorify

  900. you in

  901. the morning?

  902. How can

  903. I thank

  904. you today?

  905. Or at

  906. the end

  907. of the

  908. day,

  909. and look,

  910. when we

  911. think of

  912. us today,

  913. we may

  914. not always

  915. have a

  916. perfect

  917. day.

  918. Let us

  919. turn to

  920. the Lord

  921. in those

  922. good,

  923. those bad

  924. days,

  925. and of

  926. course,

  927. those ugly

  928. days.

  929. None of

  930. us here

  931. have had

  932. an ugly

  933. day

  934. before.

  935. We've

  936. all had

  937. ugly

  938. days,

  939. right?

  940. We've

  941. had bad

  942. days.

  943. You

  944. still

  945. give it

  946. to the

  947. Lord.

  948. God,

  949. I didn't

  950. have a

  951. good day

  952. at all.

  953. My AC

  954. went out.

  955. My tire

  956. went flat.

  957. My boss

  958. was mean

  959. to me.

  960. Whatever

  961. it is,

  962. offer it

  963. to the

  964. Lord.

  965. The second

  966. thing,

  967. then,

  968. is to

  969. serve

  970. without

  971. what?

  972. The

  973. expectation

  974. of applause.

  975. And Scripture

  976. talks about

  977. this so

  978. much,

  979. right?

  980. To not

  981. be like

  982. the hypocrites,

  983. for example.

  984. There's a

  985. famous

  986. quote or

  987. saying,

  988. and if I

  989. get it

  990. wrong,

  991. I apologize.

  992. It's

  993. basically,

  994. character

  995. is what

  996. you do

  997. when no

  998. one is

  999. watching.

  1000. Something to

  1001. that effect,

  1002. right?

  1003. Or

  1004. integrity.

  1005. What do

  1006. you do

  1007. when no

  1008. one is

  1009. looking?

  1010. Do you

  1011. steal the

  1012. five dollars?

  1013. when no

  1014. one's

  1015. there?

  1016. It's

  1017. five bucks?

  1018. Or do

  1019. you do

  1020. the

  1021. responsible

  1022. thing?

  1023. That's a

  1024. question.

  1025. In the

  1026. same way,

  1027. then,

  1028. even when

  1029. what you're

  1030. doing,

  1031. when you're

  1032. serving the

  1033. Lord,

  1034. or you're

  1035. giving it

  1036. all at

  1037. school,

  1038. or you're

  1039. performing

  1040. your best

  1041. at work,

  1042. whatever it

  1043. may be,

  1044. always remember

  1045. you do

  1046. your best

  1047. in excellence

  1048. for the

  1049. glory of

  1050. God,

  1051. and recognize

  1052. there will

  1053. be times

  1054. well,

  1055. how many

  1056. times have

  1057. we done

  1058. something and

  1059. not gotten

  1060. a pat on

  1061. the back

  1062. or an

  1063. applause or

  1064. an appreciation?

  1065. Please don't

  1066. raise your

  1067. hand.

  1068. But there

  1069. are times

  1070. where that

  1071. happens,

  1072. especially

  1073. like when I

  1074. think of

  1075. my own

  1076. children,

  1077. when we

  1078. think of

  1079. our own

  1080. kids,

  1081. the things

  1082. that we

  1083. do behind

  1084. the scenes

  1085. to make

  1086. life better

  1087. for our

  1088. family,

  1089. for our

  1090. friends.

  1091. things.

  1092. And so

  1093. it's a

  1094. call for

  1095. you to

  1096. consider,

  1097. just like

  1098. that first

  1099. point,

  1100. how is

  1101. your heart,

  1102. you know,

  1103. the first

  1104. point is

  1105. for you to

  1106. ask yourself,

  1107. what is your

  1108. heart posture

  1109. towards God?

  1110. Do you have

  1111. a soft

  1112. heart or

  1113. a hardened

  1114. heart?

  1115. For the

  1116. second one

  1117. is,

  1118. will I

  1119. still do

  1120. the right

  1121. thing even

  1122. when no

  1123. one is

  1124. looking?

  1125. That's a

  1126. way to

  1127. gauge your

  1128. heart.

  1129. Am I

  1130. still going

  1131. to serve

  1132. the Lord

  1133. even when

  1134. I'm not

  1135. appreciated?

  1136. Am I

  1137. still going

  1138. to do

  1139. the right

  1140. thing even

  1141. when no

  1142. one is

  1143. looking?

  1144. That's a

  1145. hard question

  1146. for sure.

  1147. Because a

  1148. lot of us,

  1149. let's be

  1150. honest,

  1151. we like

  1152. getting

  1153. appreciated.

  1154. We like

  1155. being thanked

  1156. for what

  1157. we do.

  1158. And certainly

  1159. we should

  1160. thank others.

  1161. Don't get

  1162. me wrong.

  1163. I'm not

  1164. saying don't

  1165. be appreciative

  1166. or thankful

  1167. for what

  1168. others do.

  1169. But when

  1170. you are

  1171. serving,

  1172. understand that

  1173. may not

  1174. always happen.

  1175. And so,

  1176. when we

  1177. think of

  1178. our time,

  1179. our talent,

  1180. and our

  1181. treasure,

  1182. give to

  1183. the Lord.

  1184. You are

  1185. serving him

  1186. and not

  1187. man.

  1188. And in

  1189. everything,

  1190. just know

  1191. that it

  1192. does matter

  1193. what you

  1194. do.

  1195. The final

  1196. thing then

  1197. is to

  1198. lead as

  1199. a servant

  1200. leader.

  1201. There's no

  1202. spacing there.

  1203. That's

  1204. all right.

  1205. It's to

  1206. lead as

  1207. a servant

  1208. leader.

  1209. What does

  1210. it mean

  1211. to be a

  1212. servant

  1213. leader?

  1214. Well,

  1215. first off,

  1216. it is

  1217. knowing that

  1218. you belong

  1219. to the

  1220. Lord,

  1221. right?

  1222. That you're

  1223. growing in

  1224. him and

  1225. you're

  1226. moved to

  1227. live like

  1228. him,

  1229. to love

  1230. like him,

  1231. and to

  1232. lead others

  1233. by Christ's

  1234. example.

  1235. example.

  1236. Doesn't

  1237. Jesus Christ

  1238. give us

  1239. an example

  1240. of how we

  1241. should live

  1242. our lives?

  1243. Doesn't

  1244. scripture tell

  1245. us that

  1246. we should

  1247. forgive one

  1248. another?

  1249. Showing

  1250. compassion,

  1251. love, but

  1252. also we

  1253. have the

  1254. love side

  1255. and we

  1256. have the

  1257. truth side

  1258. because we

  1259. stand on

  1260. the truth

  1261. of God's

  1262. word and

  1263. we deal

  1264. in love.

  1265. And so

  1266. it is

  1267. through your

  1268. words,

  1269. it is

  1270. through

  1271. your

  1272. actions,

  1273. how you

  1274. speak to

  1275. people.

  1276. How do

  1277. you speak

  1278. to your

  1279. neighbor?

  1280. How do

  1281. you speak

  1282. to your

  1283. family?

  1284. How do

  1285. you do

  1286. that?

  1287. And also

  1288. in your

  1289. actions.

  1290. How are

  1291. your actions?

  1292. I mean,

  1293. I know a

  1294. lot of

  1295. us,

  1296. we know

  1297. that actions

  1298. speak louder

  1299. than words,

  1300. but the

  1301. two should

  1302. be in

  1303. alignment.

  1304. Don't be

  1305. a hypocrite

  1306. in your

  1307. words and

  1308. your actions.

  1309. they need

  1310. to be

  1311. in

  1312. alignment.

  1313. Be

  1314. an

  1315. ambassador

  1316. for

  1317. Christ.

  1318. That's

  1319. what

  1320. matters,

  1321. is that

  1322. you represent

  1323. Christ.

  1324. In

  1325. knowing the

  1326. Lord,

  1327. in

  1328. believing

  1329. in

  1330. him,

  1331. recognize

  1332. that you're

  1333. saved,

  1334. and be

  1335. transformed

  1336. by him.

  1337. Show

  1338. others

  1339. through

  1340. your words

  1341. and your

  1342. actions

  1343. that you

  1344. are a

  1345. Christian,

  1346. that you

  1347. are saved.

  1348. And whether

  1349. you are out

  1350. in a

  1351. field,

  1352. preparing

  1353. the soil

  1354. or preparing

  1355. hearts,

  1356. or whether

  1357. you are

  1358. tending

  1359. the sheep,

  1360. whether it's

  1361. literal sheep,

  1362. or it's

  1363. tending

  1364. those that

  1365. know the

  1366. Lord,

  1367. the flock,

  1368. what matters

  1369. is that you

  1370. belong to

  1371. God,

  1372. and you

  1373. serve him.

  1374. we are

  1375. certainly

  1376. saved by

  1377. grace through

  1378. faith.

  1379. We grow

  1380. and we

  1381. do good

  1382. in his

  1383. name.

  1384. That is

  1385. our

  1386. calling.

  1387. That is

  1388. our

  1389. mission.

  1390. That is

  1391. our

  1392. objective,

  1393. to be

  1394. saved,

  1395. to grow

  1396. in his

  1397. name,

  1398. and to

  1399. do good

  1400. in the

  1401. name of

  1402. Jesus

  1403. Christ.

  1404. Certainly

  1405. the

  1406. setting

  1407. and the

  1408. situation

  1409. may

  1410. change,

  1411. but God

  1412. is

  1413. constant.

  1414. Who do

  1415. you belong

  1416. to?

  1417. And who

  1418. do you

  1419. serve?

  1420. Let us

  1421. remember

  1422. then,

  1423. that God's

  1424. grace

  1425. is enough.

  1426. God

  1427. supplies us

  1428. with all

  1429. that we

  1430. need.

  1431. What a

  1432. wonderful God

  1433. that we

  1434. serve.

  1435. Without

  1436. him,

  1437. we are

  1438. nothing.

  1439. And to

  1440. bring it

  1441. all home,

  1442. I want

  1443. to challenge

  1444. you.

  1445. I want

  1446. you to

  1447. turn your

  1448. Bibles

  1449. real quick

  1450. as we

  1451. close here.

  1452. I want

  1453. you to

  1454. go to

  1455. 1 Peter.

  1456. It's

  1457. not on

  1458. the screen.

  1459. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:11

  1460. chapter 4

  1461. verse 11.

  1462. It's

  1463. on page

  1464. 1206

  1465. in the

  1466. ESV

  1467. Pew

  1468. Bible.

  1469. I'll

  1470. start with

  1471. verse 8.

  1472. Are we

  1473. all there,

  1474. church?

  1475. So I'll

  1476. start with

  1477. verse 8.

  1478. Above

  1479. all,

  1480. keep loving

  1481. one another

  1482. earnestly,

  1483. since love

  1484. covers a

  1485. multitude of

  1486. sins.

  1487. show

  1488. hospitality

  1489. to one

  1490. another

  1491. without

  1492. grumbling.

  1493. As each

  1494. has received

  1495. a gift,

  1496. use it

  1497. to serve

  1498. one another

  1499. as good

  1500. stewards

  1501. of God's

  1502. varied grace.

  1503. When we

  1504. talk about

  1505. being a

  1506. servant,

  1507. part of

  1508. that is

  1509. stewardship.

  1510. As good

  1511. stewards of

  1512. God's

  1513. varied grace,

  1514. whoever

  1515. speaks,

  1516. as one

  1517. who speaks

  1518. oracles of

  1519. God,

  1520. whoever

  1521. serves as

  1522. one who

  1523. serves by

  1524. the what?

  1525. The strength

  1526. that God

  1527. supplies,

  1528. in order

  1529. that in

  1530. everything may

  1531. be glorified

  1532. through Jesus

  1533. Christ.

  1534. To him

  1535. belong glory

  1536. and dominion

  1537. forever and

  1538. ever.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Do you see

  1541. that there?

  1542. it helps

  1543. us with

  1544. our

  1545. understanding

  1546. of the

  1547. parable

  1548. that whoever

  1549. serves,

  1550. God will

  1551. give you

  1552. the strength

  1553. and he

  1554. will supply

  1555. with what

  1556. you need

  1557. and in

  1558. doing this

  1559. that God

  1560. may be

  1561. glorified

  1562. through

  1563. Jesus

  1564. Christ.

  1565. And so

  1566. let that

  1567. truth,

  1568. let that

  1569. remain with

  1570. you today

  1571. as we

  1572. close and

  1573. we see

  1574. how powerful

  1575. this parable

  1576. is.

  1577. May it

  1578. stir

  1579. our hearts.

  1580. May we

  1581. have a

  1582. heart of

  1583. gratitude.

  1584. May we

  1585. seek God,

  1586. grow in

  1587. him,

  1588. and do

  1589. good in

  1590. his name.

  1591. Let's pray

  1592. together.

  1593. And Father,

  1594. we thank

  1595. you for

  1596. this time,

  1597. this opportunity

  1598. for us

  1599. to go

  1600. over your

  1601. word.

  1602. What a

  1603. very

  1604. unique

  1605. and very

  1606. deep

  1607. and very

  1608. heavy

  1609. parable

  1610. that you

  1611. have here.

  1612. And although

  1613. we may not

  1614. fully understand

  1615. it here

  1616. in 2025,

  1617. as we

  1618. know,

  1619. hundreds,

  1620. thousands of

  1621. years have

  1622. passed by,

  1623. may we

  1624. recognize

  1625. that these

  1626. servants

  1627. were dedicated

  1628. to you

  1629. in service.

  1630. And although

  1631. we may not

  1632. have slaves

  1633. or servants

  1634. today,

  1635. may we

  1636. at least

  1637. recognize

  1638. that the

  1639. servants in

  1640. this parable

  1641. relied on

  1642. you,

  1643. recognizing

  1644. who they

  1645. belong to.

  1646. May we

  1647. consider that.

  1648. May we

  1649. think about

  1650. it,

  1651. that we

  1652. belong to

  1653. you,

  1654. that we

  1655. serve you.

  1656. Father,

  1657. I pray

  1658. that if

  1659. there's

  1660. anyone who

  1661. has a

  1662. hardened

  1663. heart,

  1664. that it

  1665. may be

  1666. softened

  1667. I pray

  1668. that if

  1669. there's

  1670. anyone who

  1671. has not

  1672. had a

  1673. relationship

  1674. with you,

  1675. may they

  1676. repent the

  1677. changing of

  1678. mind to

  1679. believe in

  1680. you.

  1681. I pray

  1682. that we

  1683. may together

  1684. and individually

  1685. grow in

  1686. you,

  1687. continuing to

  1688. be molded

  1689. and transformed

  1690. by you.

  1691. And I

  1692. pray that

  1693. we don't

  1694. have an

  1695. inactive

  1696. faith,

  1697. but we

  1698. have an

  1699. active

  1700. faith,

  1701. living out

  1702. the gospel,

  1703. being that

  1704. ambassador

  1705. for Christ

  1706. in what

  1707. we say

  1708. and in

  1709. what we

  1710. do.

  1711. May you

  1712. stir our

  1713. hearts much

  1714. like you

  1715. stirred the

  1716. heart of

  1717. pagan kings

  1718. to act.

  1719. May you

  1720. stir our

  1721. hearts

  1722. to be

  1723. empowered,

  1724. to be

  1725. more like

  1726. you.

  1727. It is

  1728. in Jesus'

  1729. name that

  1730. we pray,

  1731. and we

  1732. all say

  1733. together,

  1734. amen.

  1735. Thank you

  1736. for listening

  1743. I pray

  1744. that you

  1746. and strengthened

  1747. in your

  1748. walk with

  1749. Christ.
