  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and each week I share sermons that balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth of the Word of God.

  3. Together, we'll explore Scripture using observation, interpretation, and application.

  4. This helps us discover practical ways to live out our faith every single day.

  5. Let's dive in together into God's Word.

  6. Well, good morning, everyone.

  7. Today, we are doing something a little different.

  8. We finished our series on the parables of Christ.

  9. That was a 38-week sermon series.

  10. We thank God for that.

  11. We thank God that, number one, we had the opportunity for us to go over His Word,

  12. but also for us to learn and grow together.

  13. We think of parables as these simplistic teachings from Christ.

  14. And these teachings are all part of God's plan, God's story.

  15. It helps us to not only minister to us, but for us to minister to others.

  16. And so I felt it appropriate.

  17. This next week, we're going to celebrate Ontario Community Church's 80th anniversary.

  18. And so before this celebration, I felt it was so appropriate for us to do a recap

  19. and to go over, in a very simplistic manner, what it is we have gone over

  20. and what it is we will go over.

  21. I originally titled this, Thy Kingdom Come, Parables from Heaven for Life on Earth.

  22. And this is to help all of us, no matter where we are in our spiritual walk and in our journey

  23. in faith, to grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord.

  24. For those of you who may not know the Lord, it's coming to know who Jesus is.

  25. And for those of us who do know the Lord, to strengthen in your walk.

  26. It's a great encouragement that no matter where it is you come from,

  27. no matter what it is you have been through, what you have gone through,

  28. what you're going through or what you will go through,

  29. God extends that invitation for you to receive the free gift of salvation.

  30. And so typically, what we do is we use the OIA method,

  31. and I did the best that I could to follow that method, right?

  32. Observation, interpretation, and application.

  33. So let's go to this next slide here.

  34. And we have in here parabolic symbols, right?

  35. We have things that show up as patterns within the Word,

  36. specifically within these parables that help us understand.

  37. We began with the seed and the soil.

  38. The seed representing the Word, and the soil representing our hearts.

  39. And that our hearts should be softened towards the Lord.

  40. That our hearts should be transformed.

  41. For many of us, we may know someone who has a hardened heart.

  42. Someone that we can pray for.

  43. Someone who has bitterness or hatred towards Christ or to the Church.

  44. For many of us, we may have even been hurt at times.

  45. But it's such an important call for us to ask God to soften our hearts

  46. and to receive His Word, much like how we are called to receive salvation.

  47. We had all these soils representing different statuses of the heart.

  48. Sometimes there are moments where there's sin that is occupying our lives,

  49. represented by weeds.

  50. That we need to clear out these weeds, as it were,

  51. and focus on becoming more Christ-like,

  52. following in the footsteps of Christ,

  53. and letting God transform us from the inside out.

  54. So we have the Word, right?

  55. The seed gets planted into the ground,

  56. and it grows into a tree,

  57. representing our spiritual walk in the Lord,

  58. and that we are to bear fruit.

  59. We also went over this idea of the treasure and the pearl.

  60. That salvation in Christ,

  61. truth, the truth that we find in Christ,

  62. should be regarded higher than any other truth.

  63. When we went over the treasure and the pearl,

  64. you had different scenarios where one person stumbled upon the truth.

  65. They just happened to find something of such great value

  66. that they were willing to trade everything for it.

  67. Then you had the guy who was seeking after fine pearls,

  68. who was seeking those pearls with everything that he had

  69. to find something of great value.

  70. And so, whether you stumble upon who the Lord is,

  71. or you're seeking truth with all that you have,

  72. it is important for us to seek after Christ,

  73. the truth of his Word,

  74. and the salvation that he offers to each and every one of us.

  75. So, truth.

  76. We also have the lamp and the householder.

  77. The lamp representing,

  78. we find this in the parable of the ten virgins, right?

  79. Where some of them are holding their lamps,

  80. and the lamp representing a vessel,

  81. representing a person,

  82. also representing churches.

  83. That you want to have it filled with oil,

  84. representing the Holy Spirit.

  85. And you need to have the flame, right?

  86. You need to have the light that shines in the darkness.

  87. And as we went over last week,

  88. let it shine.

  89. We want our lamps to shine,

  90. not only in our own households,

  91. but for the world to see.

  92. To be examples.

  93. And the householder is someone then,

  94. who is able to discern,

  95. and take out the treasures new and old.

  96. Some scholars have said,

  97. it's the ability to distinguish the difference

  98. between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

  99. Some have said it's the old promises

  100. and the new promises.

  101. But it's the ability to shine your light,

  102. and also to be able to spiritually discern.

  103. Right?

  104. Knowing the difference between right and wrong.

  105. Truth from lies.

  106. And in discernment,

  107. we train in discernment.

  108. We also have the shepherd and the sheep.

  109. And what's really powerful about that

  110. is the shepherd is represented,

  111. and a lot of us know this language,

  112. it's represented by Christ,

  113. the chief shepherd, right?

  114. Or the great shepherd.

  115. And his sheep are represented

  116. as those that know him, right?

  117. Just as when scripture says

  118. that the sheep know his voice, right?

  119. And it's always interesting,

  120. in a Bible study that I went to the other day,

  121. there was a man there,

  122. if Kermit is watching on YouTube or wherever,

  123. he'll appreciate this.

  124. He told me this story of when he would go outside,

  125. and he would call for his cows, his cattle,

  126. and hundreds of them would just come

  127. right from over the hill, as it were.

  128. He would just, they knew his voice so well

  129. that they responded,

  130. and it's such a real-life connection

  131. when we think of the shepherd and the sheep, right?

  132. When you have animals,

  133. be that cows or sheep or horses,

  134. they know who you are,

  135. and how often they're happy to see you,

  136. even when you're having a bad day, right?

  137. There are, that goes to show the familiarity

  138. of us knowing the Lord.

  139. What beautiful imagery that is,

  140. and also the fact,

  141. the simple fact that we also can think of

  142. those that are watching the gate.

  143. We talked about gatekeepers,

  144. that that unfortunately has a negative connotation,

  145. but a gatekeeper is someone who is to protect

  146. and assist the shepherd.

  147. So we see Christ as the great shepherd,

  148. but also we think of pastors

  149. as they are to lead their congregations,

  150. not to be a hireling,

  151. but someone who cares for the flock, right?

  152. Who watches out and checks in with their,

  153. makes sure there's no injury

  154. or they're not stuck in a rut or whatever it is,

  155. but takes care of them.

  156. And even in the image of gatekeepers,

  157. people who are assisting the shepherd in that,

  158. what beautiful language.

  159. We also had the,

  160. a lot of the language about virgins and the banquet

  161. used as this idea of anticipation

  162. and being prepared, right?

  163. Preparing for the wedding feast.

  164. And that kind of language is very,

  165. it's difficult for us to think of nowadays,

  166. but think of someone who's waiting

  167. for their wedding day.

  168. That sense of anticipation, right?

  169. Is the same type of anticipation

  170. when we are waiting upon the Lord to return,

  171. waiting upon Christ for,

  172. well, the new heaven and the new earth, as it were.

  173. So there's so many connections that we're seeing here.

  174. And of course, the banquet,

  175. which is talking about the great feast.

  176. When we think about this,

  177. we, when we've just partook in communion,

  178. it is the table that is available

  179. for those to come and celebrate,

  180. to taste and see that the Lord is good.

  181. We think about it,

  182. just as the table is open for you

  183. to partake in communion,

  184. so too is the table of plenty

  185. when it comes to salvation, right?

  186. We've talked about many parables

  187. where invitations were invited to certain people

  188. and they rejected the messengers

  189. or they said that they were too busy

  190. or whatever it was.

  191. But the invitation now is for everyone.

  192. Much like how when we think of Christianity,

  193. the mystery of Christ,

  194. that which was hidden,

  195. is now revealed for all.

  196. That which was once exclusive

  197. is now inclusive

  198. for everyone to come to Christ

  199. by believing in the death, burial, and resurrection.

  200. We also had the minas and the talents here.

  201. Now, it's always interesting.

  202. Most people, they go over the talents, right?

  203. And we think of, you know,

  204. stewarding your money, right?

  205. We think of all these different things,

  206. but it's so much more than that.

  207. The importance of stewardship.

  208. Many of us, I know in my own background,

  209. I think of how I was taught,

  210. you gotta steward your time, talent, and your treasure.

  211. I remember learning that very young from my mother.

  212. But we also steward our very lives.

  213. We steward what God has given to us,

  214. even our own testimony.

  215. How are you going to use your story?

  216. How are you going to use your resources

  217. for the glory of God?

  218. How you answer that is unique to you.

  219. For some of us,

  220. especially when we're younger,

  221. we may have more time.

  222. We may have a little bit of talent.

  223. We may have a lot of talent.

  224. We may not have a lot of treasure.

  225. It's how we are going to use

  226. what God has given to us

  227. for his honor and his glory.

  228. And so minas and talents,

  229. it's just the main idea of stewardship

  230. and how important that is for us.

  231. And then we have the wheat and the weeds,

  232. the net and the sheep and the goats.

  233. This kind of language has been shown

  234. throughout the parables,

  235. showing this distinction of separation, right?

  236. When we were doing our interactive reading,

  237. the final separation or the final judgment

  238. between good and evil, right?

  239. And when we think of this idea

  240. of sheep versus the goat,

  241. the goats is,

  242. who do you belong to?

  243. Do you belong to the great shepherd

  244. or do you not?

  245. And even though that can be scary language

  246. and to some capacity,

  247. it's a call for us as Christians

  248. to be able to share to the gospel

  249. the goats of the world

  250. or the weeds of the world.

  251. It's also important for us to know

  252. that there will be a final judgment

  253. or a final sorting as it were.

  254. That's nothing to be afraid of.

  255. That's actually something

  256. that we should be encouraged by.

  257. That God has the final say

  258. and that God is in control

  259. and that we are to trust in him,

  260. knowing that you see all of these references

  261. about final judgment.

  262. It's something that we need to take to heart.

  263. And then I put on here,

  264. there's a few other ones I haven't gone over,

  265. but one important one was the friend at midnight

  266. and the persistent widow.

  267. Those are some of my favorite ones, right?

  268. This widow who is asking for justice

  269. from a wicked judge, right?

  270. And the judge gets so bothered

  271. by the fact that this old widow

  272. is just bothering me for justice.

  273. I'm finally gonna give her justice.

  274. I think of this old guy

  275. or I think of this judge

  276. and he's like, leave me alone.

  277. I'm not giving you justice.

  278. I'm not giving you justice.

  279. I'm not giving you justice.

  280. And then finally she keeps coming,

  281. asking for justice

  282. and it finally happens.

  283. And the whole premise of that parable

  284. was God saying,

  285. look at this wicked judge

  286. who neither feared God

  287. nor respected man,

  288. as the text says, right?

  289. That's a pretty wicked person.

  290. Look at how much more God will give justice.

  291. How much more God loves us.

  292. So that is something that was very powerful.

  293. And then the friend at midnight

  294. was very similar

  295. in the sense of being,

  296. asking for assistance

  297. and being persistent in prayer, right?

  298. So we can think of how we seek God

  299. and asking for justice,

  300. for love,

  301. or sometimes for some of us

  302. we've asked for patience

  303. and we're still waiting for it, right?

  304. We think of these different things.

  305. But it's being persistent in our prayers.

  306. Just like how scripture tells us

  307. that we are to pray without ceasing.

  308. We are to continually to pray for others.

  309. And there's a few other ones

  310. that I haven't listed on here.

  311. These are the main patterns.

  312. For example,

  313. the children in the marketplace

  314. was the idea of

  315. in good times or in bad,

  316. respond and be a part of the community, right?

  317. There's certain ones in there

  318. that just we would be going on and on

  319. basically the entire thing.

  320. But these are the main patterns that we see.

  321. In other words,

  322. pursuing truth,

  323. receiving salvation,

  324. letting your light shine,

  325. knowing who Christ is

  326. and knowing the sheep,

  327. being in preparation

  328. for the final judgment,

  329. being in preparation

  330. for Christ's return,

  331. the importance of stewardship,

  332. knowing about the final sorting, right?

  333. And then also being persistent in prayer

  334. when you're seeking God.

  335. That's how we bring it all together.

  336. We now go to the next slide then

  337. is what can we learn?

  338. So we'll condense this even more

  339. so that we can understand this.

  340. An entire almost 40-week series,

  341. how do we condense that

  342. into something that we understand, right?

  343. What we can learn is

  344. from the seed to bearing fruit.

  345. That's the first point in here, right?

  346. And so it's a call for us

  347. to respond to the gospel, right?

  348. That let our hearts,

  349. let our soil be ready

  350. to receive not only the word,

  351. but salvation into our hearts.

  352. Some of you may know someone

  353. who has that sense of bitterness.

  354. You may know someone

  355. who has a hardened heart.

  356. Pray for them.

  357. Pray that their heart will be softened

  358. and be ready

  359. to make that decision for Christ,

  360. believing in the death, burial,

  361. and resurrection.

  362. But it's also,

  363. it's not only the fact

  364. about salvation though,

  365. it's the fact of the kingdom of God.

  366. When we're talking about

  367. that which is small, right?

  368. From the Jewish people,

  369. going all the way to salvation

  370. available for everyone.

  371. Just as I had mentioned

  372. many times throughout the series,

  373. the stone that knocks over

  374. the giant statue

  375. and grows into a mountain,

  376. very similar,

  377. just as the seed, right?

  378. It grows into a tree

  379. and it bears fruit.

  380. So not only can we think of this

  381. at an individual level,

  382. we can see how the kingdom of God

  383. is expanding.

  384. That is very powerful.

  385. That is very beautiful.

  386. And so,

  387. when you receive salvation,

  388. let God work in and through you.

  389. Be ready to follow

  390. in the footsteps of Christ.

  391. Let God stir your hearts

  392. as it were,

  393. much like how the Lord will do that,

  394. stir our hearts

  395. and convict us

  396. to become more like Him.

  397. So we have from the seed

  398. to bearing fruit.

  399. And I pray that all of you,

  400. first and foremost,

  401. believe in Jesus Christ.

  402. that you grow in Him

  403. and that you bear fruit.

  404. The second thing then

  405. is stewardship

  406. and counting the cost.

  407. I had talked so much

  408. about the idea

  409. of when we had

  410. our response stones, right?

  411. When you're thinking

  412. of counting the cost,

  413. it's the very notion,

  414. the language is

  415. casting your pebble, right?

  416. We can kind of think

  417. about that nowadays,

  418. about casting your vote,

  419. but I don't want to get

  420. too political here, right?

  421. But it's basically

  422. where are you going

  423. to put all your,

  424. what are you going

  425. to put your life in,

  426. so to speak, right?

  427. And so counting the cost,

  428. it's calculating,

  429. it's considering

  430. these kind of things, right?

  431. But also the fact

  432. when we think of stewardship,

  433. that we are to,

  434. everything that God

  435. has given to us,

  436. it's just like

  437. when scripture says,

  438. every good gift

  439. comes from above, right?

  440. The gifts that we are given,

  441. right?

  442. Our time, talent, treasure,

  443. our testimony,

  444. our very lives,

  445. we are to use

  446. and we are to discern,

  447. we are to steward

  448. our very lives

  449. in honor and glory

  450. to the Lord.

  451. Now, again,

  452. how you do that

  453. is very different

  454. from the one person

  455. to the next person

  456. to the next person.

  457. And so that's very,

  458. very important.

  459. And it's also important

  460. as we steward, right?

  461. As we're growing in faith,

  462. that our intentionality,

  463. us, just as we should

  464. all seek Christ

  465. and his salvation,

  466. we should continue

  467. to seek God

  468. and having him

  469. transform our lives,

  470. saying,

  471. I am ready, God,

  472. for you to mold me

  473. into who you want me to be.

  474. In other words,

  475. we think that,

  476. let us remember

  477. that discipleship

  478. is intentional,

  479. that our faith

  480. is built upon

  481. the solid rock

  482. and that we,

  483. we are to cast our pebble

  484. and let God work

  485. in and through us

  486. till the very end.

  487. And then finally,

  488. we have grace,

  489. compassion,

  490. and prayer.

  491. These are three things

  492. that we find

  493. throughout the parables here.

  494. That God seeks the lost.

  495. That God provides grace.

  496. God gives us

  497. this opportunity,

  498. this invitation

  499. for us to respond to him.

  500. salvation,

  501. newness of life,

  502. a new identity,

  503. God provides

  504. for all that we need.

  505. And as we are given,

  506. let us give back to God

  507. and let us be that light

  508. for others to see.

  509. And so,

  510. let us be

  511. like the good Samaritan.

  512. Let us be good neighbors,

  513. right?

  514. Just like,

  515. what is it,

  516. Mr. Rogers,

  517. won't you be my neighbor,

  518. right?

  519. We think about

  520. these kind of things.

  521. How we can be

  522. an example

  523. for others to see.

  524. Good neighbors

  525. who show mercy

  526. and kindness

  527. and compassion,

  528. love,

  529. grace,

  530. and the truth

  531. of Christ.

  532. All of these things.

  533. And let us also remember

  534. to, again,

  535. be persistent

  536. in prayer,

  537. be faithful to God

  538. in anticipation

  539. for his return.

  540. Now,

  541. here's the thing.

  542. We don't know

  543. the time

  544. when Christ

  545. will return.

  546. I know there's

  547. many books out there,

  548. many magazines

  549. and articles

  550. that'll say

  551. it'll happen

  552. at this moment

  553. or another moment,

  554. right?

  555. How many of you

  556. remember Y2K,

  557. right?

  558. The Y2K bug

  559. that'll wipe out

  560. everything,

  561. right?

  562. Other people said

  563. it was 2012

  564. because of the Mayan calendar,

  565. right?

  566. We had that.

  567. It's almost like

  568. every year

  569. someone wants

  570. to make a lot

  571. of book sales

  572. saying when it'll happen.

  573. But how embarrassing

  574. it must be

  575. when you're proven wrong,

  576. right?

  577. But it's important

  578. for us

  579. that we wait

  580. in anticipation

  581. for Christ's return.

  582. We live

  583. as waiting

  584. for him,

  585. being faithful

  586. to God

  587. and to his word,

  588. living and loving

  589. like Christ

  590. for other people.

  591. And so,

  592. that's what we can learn

  593. when it comes

  594. to parables

  595. in the most

  596. simplistic of senses.

  597. And then finally,

  598. it goes into,

  599. then what can we

  600. do about this?

  601. How do we live

  602. with these parables?

  603. Something I did not

  604. put on here.

  605. Every parable

  606. is a way

  607. that you can minister

  608. to someone.

  609. Let me give you

  610. an example.

  611. There's the parable

  612. of the

  613. Pharisee

  614. and the tax collector.

  615. the Pharisee

  616. representing someone

  617. who's religious,

  618. who,

  619. the text says

  620. that he gave

  621. 10% of everything

  622. that he owned.

  623. On the surface,

  624. this man

  625. looked like

  626. he got

  627. everything under control,

  628. but yet Christ

  629. said that he

  630. is not justified.

  631. Well,

  632. what a way

  633. to minister

  634. to someone

  635. who is more

  636. focused on

  637. the rules

  638. and the rituals

  639. and the religion

  640. as opposed

  641. to the relationship.

  642. Does that make sense,

  643. church?

  644. Because it goes

  645. over to the tax collector.

  646. He goes in there

  647. and some scholars

  648. say he was in

  649. the outer courts.

  650. Some say he was

  651. in the Holy of Holies.

  652. We don't know

  653. specifically,

  654. but it says

  655. that he wouldn't

  656. lift his eyes

  657. towards heaven

  658. because when you

  659. go in there,

  660. you are going

  661. to pray

  662. with your arms open

  663. and lift your eyes

  664. towards heaven.

  665. But this man,

  666. he ends up

  667. banging on his chest

  668. saying,

  669. God,

  670. have mercy

  671. on me,

  672. a sinner.

  673. This man

  674. did not have it

  675. together.

  676. That parable

  677. is a way

  678. that you can

  679. minister to someone

  680. by sharing

  681. a simple truth

  682. to another person.

  683. That's just

  684. one parable.

  685. And we,

  686. as Christians,

  687. are to think of

  688. how can we

  689. minister to people

  690. by sharing

  691. in the power

  692. of parables.

  693. So,

  694. we still have

  695. these three things.

  696. I wanted to share

  697. that as something

  698. that's important

  699. for when it comes

  700. to sharing

  701. our faith

  702. with others.

  703. Well,

  704. the most important

  705. thing, right,

  706. receive the word,

  707. right?

  708. Christ being

  709. the word.

  710. Christ being

  711. the solid rock,

  712. the foundation.

  713. In other words,

  714. receive salvation.

  715. Let it take

  716. roots,

  717. grow in it,

  718. and produce

  719. fruits.

  720. Treasure the kingdom.

  721. Treasure what you have.

  722. Don't take it

  723. for granted.

  724. The very salvation

  725. that we have

  726. by you believing

  727. in Jesus Christ.

  728. The death,

  729. burial,

  730. and resurrection

  731. is the single

  732. greatest decision

  733. that you could make

  734. that not only

  735. affects your life

  736. here on the earth,

  737. but has eternal

  738. consequences.

  739. Okay?

  740. Us choosing

  741. what we're going

  742. to eat

  743. or dress

  744. or what college

  745. we're going to

  746. has no

  747. eternal significance

  748. compared to that

  749. of believing

  750. in Jesus Christ.

  751. Christ.

  752. So receive

  753. the word,

  754. receive Christ,

  755. and treasure

  756. what you have.

  757. I've always

  758. found it so

  759. wonderful.

  760. Some of you

  761. may identify,

  762. you may know

  763. someone who just

  764. became a Christian,

  765. and they're so excited.

  766. And they say

  767. things like,

  768. I know Jesus

  769. saved me.

  770. I know Jesus

  771. loves me.

  772. I know that

  773. my sins are

  774. forgiven.

  775. And you're like,

  776. man,

  777. I hope I never

  778. lose that enthusiasm.

  779. I want to be

  780. like that new

  781. believer who

  782. realizes the

  783. heaviness of the

  784. salvation they've

  785. received.

  786. May we never

  787. grow cold or

  788. bitter towards

  789. that.

  790. May we appreciate

  791. the treasure,

  792. the pearl of

  793. great price,

  794. the very word

  795. that we have

  796. received,

  797. the salvation

  798. that we hold

  799. dear.

  800. May we hang

  801. on to it.

  802. So ready your

  803. heart to respond

  804. to the gospel.

  805. Seek God,

  806. respond to the

  807. invitation,

  808. cast your stone,

  809. enter through

  810. the gates.

  811. All of this

  812. is very similar

  813. language.

  814. Believe in the

  815. Lord and be

  816. saved.

  817. Let go of the

  818. former life and

  819. the former

  820. things.

  821. Let God work

  822. in and through

  823. you.

  824. The second

  825. thing then is

  826. to steward your

  827. life and count

  828. the cost,

  829. right?

  830. Steward

  831. everything that

  832. you have.

  833. Do it.

  834. If God gives

  835. you everything,

  836. won't you give

  837. but a little bit

  838. back to him?

  839. That's,

  840. I remember

  841. learning that

  842. when I became

  843. a new Christian

  844. and I hated

  845. that.

  846. I'm like,

  847. what do you

  848. mean?

  849. But when you

  850. really think

  851. about it,

  852. write down

  853. every blessing

  854. that you have.

  855. Write down

  856. every gift

  857. that you have

  858. and just think

  859. for a moment.

  860. Take inventory

  861. of that.

  862. What can I

  863. give back

  864. to the Lord?

  865. So your time,

  866. talent,

  867. your treasure,

  868. your very life,

  869. your mina,

  870. follow in the

  871. footsteps of Christ

  872. and honor the

  873. King.

  874. It's just like

  875. when we've

  876. talked so much

  877. about parables,

  878. about this idea

  879. that we are

  880. to build

  881. upon the

  882. solid rock,

  883. right?

  884. We are to

  885. build our

  886. house.

  887. Or just like

  888. even how

  889. scripture says

  890. we are to

  891. have treasures

  892. in heaven.

  893. Let us be

  894. reminded that

  895. we are saved

  896. by grace

  897. through faith.

  898. We are not

  899. saved by

  900. what we do.

  901. We are saved

  902. by what has

  903. been done.

  904. We have

  905. been saved

  906. by grace

  907. through faith

  908. so that

  909. we can do

  910. good in

  911. the name

  912. of Christ.

  913. And that's

  914. very powerful.

  915. It can be

  916. convicting for

  917. sure.

  918. Build upon

  919. the rock

  920. and let

  921. God work

  922. in and

  923. through you.

  924. Journey

  925. with Christ

  926. in your

  927. spiritual walk.

  928. Be a

  929. hearer

  930. and a

  931. doer.

  932. Choose

  933. the rock

  934. over the

  935. sand as

  936. well.

  937. And then

  938. finally,

  939. practice

  940. love,

  941. mercy,

  942. prayer,

  943. and shine.

  944. Of course,

  945. there's other

  946. things.

  947. Speak the

  948. truth in

  949. love.

  950. Be an

  951. ambassador for

  952. Christ.

  953. There's so

  954. many different

  955. things in

  956. this.

  957. In other

  958. words,

  959. it's being

  960. Christ-like.

  961. It's

  962. considering how

  963. you speak

  964. to people.

  965. It's

  966. considering how

  967. you act,

  968. your words

  969. and your

  970. deeds,

  971. your words

  972. and your

  973. actions,

  974. but even

  975. your very

  976. presence

  977. life.

  978. When you

  979. are with

  980. someone,

  981. how are you

  982. exhibiting the

  983. light of

  984. Christ towards

  985. others?

  986. And we

  987. have these

  988. parables to

  989. help us

  990. to see

  991. examples.

  992. We think

  993. of putting

  994. our lamp

  995. on a stand

  996. and letting

  997. it shine.

  998. Let what

  999. you do

  1000. point to

  1001. the Father.

  1002. Your very

  1003. life can

  1004. have such a

  1005. profound impact

  1006. on other

  1007. people.

  1008. From the

  1009. everyday,

  1010. the people

  1011. we meet at

  1012. the gas

  1013. station,

  1014. whether it's

  1015. Shell or

  1016. Maverick or

  1017. whatever it

  1018. is,

  1019. wherever it

  1020. is you go

  1021. to get

  1022. gas,

  1023. right?

  1024. Or wherever

  1025. you shop,

  1026. your co-workers,

  1027. students that

  1028. you know,

  1029. different things

  1030. you can exhibit

  1031. the light,

  1032. love,

  1033. and truth.

  1034. So this is

  1035. part of what

  1036. we found.

  1037. Love,

  1038. mercy,

  1039. right?

  1040. Prayer,

  1041. and let your

  1042. light shine.

  1043. And so,

  1044. be encouraged

  1045. by all of

  1046. this.

  1047. That God

  1048. is that

  1049. Jesus Christ

  1050. is the

  1051. good shepherd.

  1052. That Jesus

  1053. Christ is

  1054. the way,

  1055. the truth,

  1056. and the

  1057. life.

  1058. Let us

  1059. continue to

  1060. grow and

  1061. to make a

  1062. greater impact

  1063. for Christ.

  1064. Let us

  1065. consider the

  1066. words we

  1067. speak,

  1068. the actions

  1069. that we do

  1070. for others.

  1071. Now,

  1072. granted,

  1073. we're not

  1074. going to be

  1075. perfect,

  1076. right?

  1077. But we

  1078. still continue

  1079. to do the

  1080. work for

  1081. Christ.

  1082. I want

  1083. to go

  1084. ahead and

  1085. shift over

  1086. for a

  1087. moment,

  1088. if we

  1089. can put

  1090. the

  1091. revelation

  1092. slide

  1093. coming up.

  1094. Now,

  1095. in

  1096. studying,

  1097. preaching,

  1098. and teaching

  1099. the parables

  1100. of Christ,

  1101. this next

  1102. week,

  1103. we're having

  1104. our 80th

  1105. anniversary.

  1106. The following

  1107. week,

  1108. on September

  1109. 21st,

  1110. we will be

  1111. getting a

  1112. new sermon

  1113. series on

  1114. revelation.

  1115. The parable

  1116. series was

  1117. called

  1118. Thy Kingdom

  1119. Come.

  1120. This is the

  1121. continuation of

  1122. this,

  1123. Thy Will

  1124. Be Done,

  1125. the final

  1126. parables of

  1127. the kingdom

  1128. going over

  1129. revelation.

  1130. The reason

  1131. for this is

  1132. because so

  1133. much of the

  1134. language in

  1135. revelation

  1136. can be

  1137. understood

  1138. by what we

  1139. learn from

  1140. parables.

  1141. Let me give

  1142. you a couple

  1143. examples here.

  1144. we had

  1145. the

  1146. ten

  1147. virgins

  1148. that were

  1149. holding their

  1150. lamps full

  1151. of oil,

  1152. right,

  1153. representing

  1154. the Holy

  1155. Spirit,

  1156. much like

  1157. how we

  1158. have the

  1159. churches in

  1160. revelation

  1161. and their

  1162. lampstands.

  1163. Very

  1164. similar

  1165. language to

  1166. what we

  1167. have learned

  1168. in parables.

  1169. We also

  1170. have the

  1171. harvest and

  1172. the city

  1173. that there's

  1174. so much

  1175. about the

  1176. final judgment

  1177. and things

  1178. that will

  1179. happen.

  1180. This is the

  1181. continuation

  1182. of that.

  1183. We also

  1184. have the

  1185. unknown

  1186. language where

  1187. there's a lot

  1188. of debate

  1189. on the

  1190. scrolls and

  1191. the seals and

  1192. the trumpets and

  1193. the bowls.

  1194. There's a lot

  1195. of people asking

  1196. which bowl

  1197. means what,

  1198. right?

  1199. But a lot

  1200. of that language

  1201. is similar to

  1202. God's plan for

  1203. final judgment.

  1204. I always

  1205. found it very

  1206. interesting when

  1207. we look at

  1208. the Old

  1209. Testament and

  1210. how when you

  1211. have the story

  1212. of Moses,

  1213. right, and

  1214. the people of

  1215. God in Egypt

  1216. and all of the

  1217. plagues that

  1218. happened, how

  1219. they're almost

  1220. exactly identical

  1221. to the judgments

  1222. in revelation.

  1223. That's

  1224. fascinating.

  1225. Like a lot

  1226. of that

  1227. apocalyptic

  1228. language that's

  1229. happening goes

  1230. right into

  1231. what we see

  1232. in revelation.

  1233. We also have

  1234. the lamb and

  1235. the shepherd

  1236. from revelation

  1237. five, just

  1238. like how there's

  1239. the parable of

  1240. the good shepherd

  1241. who takes care

  1242. of his sheep.

  1243. Very similar

  1244. in there.

  1245. You also have

  1246. the marriage

  1247. supper and the

  1248. white garments.

  1249. That's interesting,

  1250. right?

  1251. Just like how we

  1252. talked about the

  1253. wedding feast and

  1254. the great banquet

  1255. and being in

  1256. preparation for

  1257. the return of

  1258. the bridegroom.

  1259. So many

  1260. similarities in

  1261. there.

  1262. So we have

  1263. that.

  1264. We have the

  1265. books open and

  1266. the reward.

  1267. We have the

  1268. sickle and the

  1269. throne talking

  1270. about the

  1271. separation,

  1272. right?

  1273. Talking about

  1274. the final

  1275. sorting of

  1276. judgment, just

  1277. like we talked

  1278. about the

  1279. sorting of

  1280. the fish, the

  1281. separation of

  1282. the wheat and

  1283. the tares, the

  1284. sheep and the

  1285. goats.

  1286. We even have

  1287. the, we talk

  1288. about counterfeit

  1289. rule, right?

  1290. The dragon, the

  1291. beast, the

  1292. false prophet and

  1293. the mark.

  1294. And even the

  1295. river and the

  1296. tree of life.

  1297. So many things

  1298. are connected in

  1299. there that we

  1300. will go over.

  1301. It should be

  1302. about a 40

  1303. week, 40, 42

  1304. week sermon

  1305. series going

  1306. over revelation

  1307. and we will see

  1308. not only the

  1309. connections within

  1310. the parabolic

  1311. language from the

  1312. teachings of

  1313. Christ, but also

  1314. how revelation is

  1315. connected with

  1316. other things.

  1317. We are not

  1318. going to focus

  1319. on the things

  1320. that divide us

  1321. because I

  1322. realize, don't

  1323. raise your hand

  1324. here, I know

  1325. revelation is one

  1326. of the most

  1327. debated on books.

  1328. Pastor, what are

  1329. you doing

  1330. preaching revelation?

  1331. Do you want to

  1332. divide this church

  1333. or not, right?

  1334. You have

  1335. different perspectives,

  1336. amillennial versus

  1337. premillennial versus

  1338. postmillennial versus

  1339. rapture versus no

  1340. rapture versus is

  1341. the mark of the

  1342. beast the barcode,

  1343. right?

  1344. You have so many

  1345. different things,

  1346. right?

  1347. Is the beast

  1348. America?

  1349. Is the beast

  1350. Russia?

  1351. It goes on and

  1352. on.

  1353. But what we are

  1354. going to do is

  1355. look at where

  1356. are the patterns,

  1357. where are the

  1358. connections within

  1359. scripture and what

  1360. can we as

  1361. Christians, as new

  1362. believers, as

  1363. existing Christians,

  1364. how can we grow

  1365. and view revelation

  1366. as the final

  1367. parable?

  1368. That's why I put

  1369. it, final parables

  1370. of the kingdom

  1371. because the

  1372. apocalyptic

  1373. language is

  1374. very similar

  1375. to parabolic

  1376. language.

  1377. And so I have

  1378. to tell you as

  1379. your pastor, I'm

  1380. very excited to

  1381. go over this

  1382. series.

  1383. It will be

  1384. different.

  1385. It won't be the

  1386. typical, you

  1387. know, the beast

  1388. is, you know, the

  1389. antichrist is so-and-so

  1390. celebrity or so-and-so

  1391. politician, right?

  1392. We're not going to

  1393. necessarily go into

  1394. that, but what does

  1395. it mean?

  1396. What does the

  1397. antichrist mean?

  1398. What does the

  1399. mark mean?

  1400. What does it mean

  1401. in scripture, for

  1402. example, when it

  1403. says, blessed is the

  1404. man who washes his

  1405. robe?

  1406. What?

  1407. I've got to wash

  1408. my laundry and I'll

  1409. be blessed and make

  1410. them white?

  1411. No.

  1412. There's so much

  1413. more than that,

  1414. right?

  1415. Or when we think

1416. of just all of this

  1417. language, we can find

  1418. a wonderful

  1419. understanding for our

  1420. growth and in our

  1421. preparation for things

  1422. that are to come.

1423. And so I hope that

1424. you guys will come to

  1425. as we begin our

  1426. revelation series in

1427. two weeks and what a

  1428. great way to start

  1429. after celebrating our

  1430. 80th year.

  1431. Amen?

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Well, let's go ahead

  1434. and pray together and

  1435. we'll go ahead and

  1436. we'll close it out.

1437. Our final thing I want

  1438. to say.

  1439. Let us remember the

  1440. patterns.

  1441. When we find things

  1442. that are interconnected

1443. with the Word of God,

  1444. we consider the

  1445. context.

  1446. We've got to know

1447. what's going on in the

  1448. surrounding verses.

1449. But we've also got to

  1450. see where is this

  1451. connected within the

  1452. entire body of

  1453. Scripture, right?

  1454. The Bible, right?

  1455. Meaning the library.

1456. Where else is it in

  1457. the library?

  1458. Where else is it

  1459. found?

  1460. We think about these

  1461. kind of things and

  1462. there, let us receive

  1463. the Word, let us

  1464. steward our life, let

  1465. us practice being

  1466. Christ-like.

  1467. Let us let our

  1468. light shine.

  1469. And I'll read this

  1470. final verse and we'll

  1471. pray.

  1472. Every scribe who has

  1473. been trained for the

  1474. kingdom of heaven is

  1475. like a householder who

  1476. brings out his

  1477. treasure, what is new

  1478. and what is old.

  1479. Let us pray together.

  1480. Father God, we thank

1481. you for this time and

  1482. this opportunity for us

  1483. to do this parable

  1484. recap, this parabolic

  1485. recap.

  1486. We're just grateful for

  1487. your Word.

  1488. We're grateful for your

  1489. Son, Jesus Christ, who

  1490. came down from heaven,

  1491. being born in a

  1492. manger, living, teaching

  1493. these parables, healing

  1494. the sick, walking on

  1495. water, even being

  1496. raised from the dead.

  1497. A fulfillment of

  1498. prophecy.

  1499. We're grateful for the

  1500. salvation that you give

  1501. to us.

  1502. May we never be

  1503. discouraged in taking

  1504. that believing in you,

  1505. making that decision to

1506. receive this free gift of

  1507. salvation.

1508. Father, I pray for this

  1509. congregation and I pray

1510. for all of those who are

  1511. tuned in online.

  1512. However many there are,

1513. we are grateful for all

1514. of the people that are

  1515. here in this place,

  1516. whether physically,

  1517. digitally, or those who

  1518. are traveling, wherever you

  1519. are.

1520. We're grateful for all of

  1521. them.

  1522. Father, we're grateful for

1523. for your Son, for the

  1524. Word.

1525. And we just pray that as

  1526. we conclude finally and

1527. move on to our celebration

  1528. of our 80th anniversary,

1529. may we consider how you

  1530. have worked in this

  1531. congregation, how you

1532. have worked in this city,

  1533. the things that are

  1534. happening today and even

1535. as we look forward to

  1536. tomorrow.

1537. May we seek you and your

  1538. word.

  1539. May we become those

  1540. ambassadors for Christ.

1541. May we be able to

1542. discern and be a light,

  1543. holding your light, the

1544. light of Christ for others

  1545. to see.

1546. May we be transformed and

  1547. through you, may we

  1548. transform others.

1549. We love you, we praise

1550. you, we glorify you, and we

  1551. honor you.

1552. It is in the name of

  1553. Jesus Christ that we

1554. pray and we all say

  1555. together, amen.

  1556. Amen.

1557. Thank you for listening for

  1558. this week's message from

  1559. Ontario Community Church.

1560. I pray that you are

  1561. encouraged and strengthened in

  1562. your walk with Christ.
