  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and each week I balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth of the Word of God.

  3. Today, you'll be hearing week four of our sermon series through the book of Revelation.

  4. We're looking at Revelation chapter 2, verses 1 through 7, which is Christ's letter to the church in Ephesus.

    Revelation 2:1–7

  5. Here's something fascinating to note before you listen.

  6. This is the same church that the Apostle Paul commended in the book of Ephesians for their love and faithfulness.

  7. It was a flagship church in the early Christian movement.

  8. Yet here in Revelation, it was being rebuked for abandoning its first love.

  9. It is a reminder that even strong churches can drift when they focus on only being right and not balancing the truth and the love of Christ.

  10. As you listen today, pay attention to the three-part remedy that Christ gives to remember, to repent, and to do, which is to love God and to love others.

  11. Let's pay attention to the connection to Jeremiah chapter 2 and how that imagery of devotion is connected with the Old Testament and with Revelation.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  12. Let's listen together to today's message.

  13. First love, remember, repent, and do love.

  14. Well, good morning, everyone.

  15. So we are in week four of our sermon series through the book of Revelation.

  16. We have been making some really good ground so far, and it's just been very interesting seeing all the different connections that happen within the book of Revelation.

  17. And we started off by seeing how important it is for us to read, study, and to preach through Revelation.

  18. And I cannot help how often we hear of Revelation as a book that is scary and confusing, one that is divisive.

  19. But the reality is there's nothing to be afraid of, especially when you know Jesus Christ.

  20. Amen?

  21. There's nothing for us to be afraid of when we trust in the living God.

  22. Our hope is in Jesus Christ and Revelation, just like any other book of the Bible, is something that we should seek, we should learn from and grow, and we should be moved to act as well.

  23. And Revelation, like any other book of the Bible, is important for us.

  24. It is if we understand that in Revelation chapter 1, verse 3,

    Revelation 1:3

  25. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

  26. And how important it is for us to read the word of God and to hear it, but to hear it so that we understand.

  27. And so often in Scripture, when you see that language of, he who has an ear, let him hear.

  28. It's for us to understand and to be transformed by the word.

  29. And we have got to keep the word of God.

  30. We have to keep it within our hearts, much so we hold dear the gospel message, as well as our testimony.

  31. I would like for us to turn to Revelation.

  32. Revelation. We're going to go into Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  33. And we're going to go over the first seven verses.

  34. And if you remember last week, we were going over this language where John was talking about what Christ's saying.

  35. Where Christ says,

  36. Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one.

  37. I died, and behold, I am alive evermore.

  38. I have the keys of death and Hades.

  39. Therefore, the things that you have seen.

  40. We had this imagery of the seven stars and the seven lampstands.

  41. The stars representing the angels or the messengers.

  42. And the lampstands representing the churches.

  43. And so, what's really cool about this is we're going to go over each of those lampstands and what the Lord has to say.

  44. Father God, we thank you for this time and this opportunity for us to gather together as we are going through this, the book of Revelation.

  45. And we are now going through the church in Ephesus.

  46. We pray, Father, that we may really take to heart the message here.

  47. May we see the good things that Ephesus did, but also learn from the bad things as well.

  48. May our hearts always be focused on you.

  49. The source of life.

  50. The source of our salvation.

  51. And may we learn to balance the truth of your word and never lose sight.

  52. May we never lose your love in the process.

  53. It is in the name of Jesus Christ that we pray and we all say together, Amen, church.

  54. All right.

  55. So, Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  56. We're going to read these seven verses.

  57. Let's read it together, church.

  58. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  59. The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand,

  60. Who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  61. I know your works, your toil, and your patient endurance,

  62. And how you cannot bear with those who are evil,

  63. But have tested those who call themselves apostles,

  64. And are not, and found them to be false.

  65. I know you are enduring patiently,

  66. And bearing up for my name's sake,

  67. And you have not grown weary.

  68. But, uh-oh.

  69. All that was good, right?

  70. But, I have this against you,

  71. That you have abandoned the love you had at first.

  72. Remember, therefore, from where you have fallen,

  73. Repent, and do the works you did at first.

  74. If not, I will come to you in what, church?

  75. Remove your lampstand from its place,

  76. Unless you repent.

  77. Yet this you have,

  78. You hate the work of the Nicolaitans,

  79. Which I also hate.

  80. He who has an ear,

  81. Let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches,

  82. To the one who conquers,

  83. I will grant to eat of the tree of life,

  84. Which is in the paradise of God.

  85. Wow.

  86. We thank God for that.

  87. What an interesting message that's happening here, right?

  88. So what exactly is going on here?

  89. We see in the beginning that Christ is saying, right,

  90. To the angel, to the messenger of the church in Ephesus, right,

  91. Write this down.

  92. So this is from Christ, right?

  93. The words of him, right?

  94. The words of Christ,

  95. Who holds the seven stars in his right hand,

  96. Who walks among the seven golden lampstands, right?

  97. We've seen this language that's happened previously, right?

  98. Where you have this imagery of Christ with eyes of fire, right?

  99. If you remember that language.

  100. And the seven stars in his right hand,

  101. And he's walking among the lampstands.

  102. Okay.

  103. It then goes into verse two, right,

  104. Where Christ is acknowledging what Ephesus is doing, right?

  105. So what do we have?

  106. I know your works, right?

  107. I know the things that you have done.

  108. I know your toil, right?

  109. The pressure that they've been under,

  110. The hard work, right?

  111. And persevering through things.

  112. Your patient endurance, right?

  113. All these things are really good when you read it, right?

  114. The good things that you're doing,

  115. That you have persevered to the end.

  116. You've been patiently waiting upon the Lord.

  117. And then it goes on,

  118. And how you cannot bear with those who are evil.

  119. Well, that's interesting, right?

  120. This church has a standard, as it were.

  121. They know they're not going to compromise.

  122. They're going to stand firm, as it were, right?

  123. And many of us know people who are like this.

  124. They're going to stand in their conviction.

  125. They're going to stand in truth.

  126. And they're not going to be shaken.

  127. They're not going to waver.

  128. And this is a good thing.

  129. And, I mean, this is what Christ is saying.

  130. So, they have a standard.

  131. But have tested those who call themselves apostles,

  132. And are not.

  133. Well, we can see here that something is going on.

  134. That in having this standard,

  135. There had to have been people who were claiming to be apostles.

  136. And they weren't.

  137. And it's important when we see this right away,

  138. How important it is for when we think of apostles in the early church.

  139. But we can think of pastors today, right?

  140. And people who are coming in the name of Christ.

  141. Are they preaching and teaching from the word of God?

  142. Are they bearing fruit?

  143. Are they exhibiting the love of Christ?

  144. We can see that in scripture,

  145. Very often it speaks of testing the spirits.

  146. Which is very important.

  147. My friends, I have to tell you,

  148. There's a reason why in your notes,

  149. I always have cross-references within scripture.

  150. I certainly hope to not be wrong in what I preach to you.

  151. And to make sure that it is backed up by scripture.

  152. Now, in that, not everyone is like that.

  153. And that's fine.

  154. But you have to be careful in the ability to discern, right?

  155. So this is what Ephesus was doing.

  156. They were discerning and they were able to call out evil for evil.

  157. And they were able to know,

  158. This guy is not a good apostle.

  159. This guy is a false, right?

  160. A fake or a phony, right?

  161. You've probably heard the example before.

  162. You hear it a lot on YouTube where

  163. You know what a real dollar bill looks like and feels like, right?

  164. Compared to funny money, right?

  165. Or compared to something that is fake.

  166. Well, when you're trained,

  167. When you know the word,

  168. When you are guided by the Holy Spirit,

  169. The ability to discern right and wrong,

  170. Truth from lies is a wonderful gift from God.

  171. And we thank God for people who have that ability.

  172. And it's important for us to grow in that ability.

  173. And so you got to know the real thing

  174. In order to know what the fake and phony things are, amen?

  175. That's so important for us.

  176. And so we can see that's what's happening, right?

  177. They've tested those who've,

  178. Now we don't know how many people

  179. Called themselves apostles,

  180. But it's enough for

  181. This church to have a standard

  182. And for Christ to commend them for that.

  183. And found them to be false.

  184. I'm going to test this apostle

  185. And see if they're legit or not.

  186. So it's going on in verse 3 then,

  187. I know you are enduring patiently

  188. And bearing up for my name's sake, right?

  189. They are persevering.

  190. They're not growing weary.

  191. This could be a church that has been

  192. Maybe dealt with spiritual warfare

  193. Or attacks, right?

  194. These kind of things that have happened

  195. That no matter what was happening at the time,

  196. We don't know exactly,

  197. They stood firm.

  198. What a beautiful thing, right?

  199. For a church to be able to not grow weary

  200. And to just keep Christ

  201. And keep Christ's truth in this case.

  202. So all of this, when you're reading this,

  203. You're like, okay, this is great.

  204. They have a standard.

  205. They're standing on truth.

  206. What could possibly go wrong?

  207. Well, we find that in verse 4 then,

  208. I have this against you.

  209. It's the but, right?

  210. How many of us like the,

  211. You did all this good thing, right?

  212. If you ever had a job review, right?

  213. Your annual review.

  214. And you're like, you did all these things great.

  215. But, right?

  216. And then you're like, but you got to improve here, right?

  217. So it's, it's, Christ is auditing here.

  218. I have this against you.

  219. That you have abandoned the love you had at first.

  220. You left, some translations say,

  221. You have left your first love.

  222. And this is talking about a departure.

  223. A leaving from loving Christ.

  224. We think about this.

  225. Now, this kind of hits home when you think about it.

  226. How sad it must be

  227. To be, to get things, so many things right,

  228. But to lose that love and devotion for Christ in the process.

  229. In other words, they had their grip so tight,

  230. You couldn't have a crowbar open it, right?

  231. Nothing could get it open.

  232. They focused so much on truth that they lost love.

  233. The love for God and, quite frankly, the love for others.

  234. What a tragic thing when you think about the other side.

  235. And when we think about it, we can think of people,

  236. And I'm not going to call out any person or any church for this,

  237. But we can even think of churches that are like this.

  238. Or people that are like this.

  239. They're so focused on the truth,

  240. And being correct, and being right.

  241. What about the love?

  242. It's a balance between the two,

  243. And it's certainly a difficult one, isn't it?

  244. Think about it.

  245. Well, I have to stand on the truth of the word of God.

  246. And by golly, I'm going to stand on that.

  247. But you can't have that grip so tight.

  248. You have to be able to speak the truth in love.

  249. We cannot forget that as we pursue the truth of God's word,

  250. We've got to have the love of Christ in us,

  251. So that we can share it with other people.

  252. So abandoning this love.

  253. Then he goes on in verse 5.

  254. That R word.

  255. What's the R word?

  256. Remember.

  257. Remember.

  258. Remember what?

  259. Remember from where you have fallen.

  260. Repent and do the works you did at first, right?

  261. And so, he's saying,

  262. Remember.

  263. Repent.

  264. And do the works.

  265. And what are those works?

  266. It's to love God.

  267. And to love other people.

  268. I get this imagery.

  269. How many of you remember when you first became a Christian?

  270. You can raise your hand if you want.

  271. Don't be bashful, right?

  272. Or you know someone if it's been a while.

  273. They first became a Christian.

  274. And that love.

  275. And that reliance and devotion to Christ.

  276. When they're so excited.

  277. And they may not have all the correct theology.

  278. But yet, it's like,

  279. I know Jesus loves me.

  280. And I know that he died for me.

  281. And that might be all they understand.

  282. And I know that Jesus rose again from the dead.

  283. And that's what I believe in.

  284. That kind of excitement and devotion to Christ.

  285. That's the kind of love

  286. that we should have

  287. towards Christ.

  288. Much like how in Scripture,

  289. when Christ says that we are to

  290. be like children,

  291. we are to come to the Lord

  292. as a child.

  293. What in the world?

  294. I remember when I first read that,

  295. I'm like,

  296. you've got to be kidding me.

  297. Like,

  298. I don't want to be a child.

  299. Right?

  300. But you think of that

  301. sense of awe and wonder

  302. for who Christ is.

  303. And that devotion to Him.

  304. That is the first love.

  305. That is beautiful

  306. when we think of this.

  307. So,

  308. Christ is explaining

  309. what needs to be done here.

  310. And unfortunately,

  311. there is a consequence

  312. if you don't change.

  313. If you focus so much on truth

  314. and not on the love of Jesus Christ,

  315. what does it say that will happen, church?

  316. church,

  317. the lampstand will be removed.

  318. Unless you repent.

  319. And let us remember

  320. when we're thinking of repentance,

  321. it's you've got to change your mind

  322. for a second here.

  323. Change your mind

  324. and change your trajectory

  325. as it were.

  326. Isn't it interesting?

  327. Kind of as a side note here.

  328. There are some churches out there.

  329. They're so focused on being right

  330. and the truth

  331. that yet they die.

  332. They don't grow.

  333. Isn't that interesting?

  334. It's important to have the truth.

  335. And by golly,

  336. we have the Word of God,

  337. but not to get so nitpicky

  338. on these things, right?

  339. That's why I talk so much

  340. about how important it is

  341. for us to understand.

  342. We all come from different backgrounds

  343. and different perspectives.

  344. As I even mentioned

  345. in the beginning

  346. of us going through Revelation,

  347. some of you are all millennial.

  348. Some of you are post-millennial.

  349. Some of you are pre-millennial.

  350. Some of you don't even know

  351. what these words are

  352. and that's okay.

  353. Right?

  354. I mean, we even have

  355. rapture versus non-rapture.

  356. What matters,

  357. instead of fighting each other

  358. and dying on these hills,

  359. we come together

  360. as the body of Christ.

  361. And here's the thing.

  362. It's not about

  363. how much you know.

  364. What matters is that

  365. you know Jesus Christ.

  366. That is what we've got to know.

  367. We've got to have that relationship

  368. with Jesus Christ.

  369. And I know that

  370. as I say this,

  371. it can be very difficult,

  372. especially if we come

  373. from that kind of background.

  374. And I will be honest,

  375. I was very attracted

  376. to always being right,

  377. having the right theology

  378. and fighting all the people

  379. that were wrong.

  380. I admit,

  381. and some of us,

  382. we may identify with that.

  383. But what matters is

  384. let us not lose

  385. the love of Christ

  386. in the process.

  387. Okay?

  388. You may have your conviction

  389. and that's okay.

  390. There's nothing wrong with that.

  391. You may be at a certain place

  392. in the Lord

  393. where it's like,

  394. you know what,

  395. where I'm at,

  396. I believe in the rapture.

  397. That's fine.

  398. You may be of the theology

  399. that you're not.

  400. And that's okay.

  401. What matters

  402. is we're not going to

  403. attack and kill each other

  404. in the process.

  405. Amen?

  406. Let's not do that, right?

  407. Like it says in Scripture,

  408. a house divided cannot stand, right?

  409. We have got to be united.

  410. And we keep the main thing,

  411. the main thing,

  412. and that is Jesus Christ,

  413. the love that comes from Him,

  414. and the truth

  415. from the Word of God.

  416. And so in here,

  417. very interesting,

  418. in verse 6 here,

  419. yet this you have,

  420. you hate the works

  421. of the Nicolaitans,

  422. which I also hate.

  423. It's kind of random, right?

  424. You read that,

  425. you're like,

  426. okay,

  427. who are the Nicolaitans

  428. and what in the world

  429. is going on here, right?

  430. So the Nicolaitans,

  431. we don't know exactly

  432. who they are

  433. and what they did,

  434. but it seems

  435. that they were compromisers, right?

  436. They were compromising the,

  437. Christ also hates it,

  438. and you find,

  439. I have in your notes here,

  440. it seems it was similar

  441. to worshipping Baal,

  442. it seems to indicate that

  443. in terms of idolatry

  444. and sexual immorality,

  445. you know,

  446. pretty heavy stuff, right?

  447. And so,

  448. but we don't know

  449. the full scope of it,

  450. nonetheless.

  451. But this was an infiltration

  452. in the church at Ephesus

  453. to the point where

  454. they're not going to let

  455. that infiltration happen.

  456. They're not going to let

  457. sexual immorality

  458. and they're not going to let

  459. idolatry infiltrate the church.

  460. And Christ is saying,

  461. look,

  462. I get it.

  463. I hate them too.

  464. But,

  465. he says specifically,

  466. do I hate the people

  467. or do I hate the works?

  468. Look at this,

  469. very important.

  470. Yeah,

  471. it's important to note that,

  472. right?

  473. I hate the things

  474. that they do,

  475. not the people.

  476. That's very interesting.

  477. It's important for us to know,

  478. right?

  479. That it could be

  480. they were infiltrating

  481. or it could be

  482. they were led astray,

  483. these people.

  484. We don't know

  485. the full scope of that.

  486. But in any case,

  487. just as Ephesus,

  488. we reject idolatry

  489. and sexual immorality,

  490. so that's important to note.

  491. And finally,

  492. at the end,

  493. he who has an ear,

  494. let him hear

  495. what the Spirit says

  496. to the churches.

  497. To the one who conquers,

  498. I will grant to eat

  499. of the tree of life.

  500. Isn't that interesting?

  501. The language that you find

  502. even from the garden,

  503. right,

  504. is very similar

  505. to what you find

  506. in Revelation.

  507. It's beautiful.

  508. In all of this,

  509. what can we learn from this?

  510. Well, the first thing

  511. is that,

  512. church,

  513. truth without love

  514. cannot sustain

  515. lasting what?

  516. Right?

  517. So these lampstands

  518. are representing

  519. their witness,

  520. the church's witness.

  521. So Ephesus

  522. has truth,

  523. they have a standard,

  524. they're discerning,

  525. they're diligent,

  526. right?

  527. They're focusing

  528. on accuracy,

  529. but yet Jesus rebukes

  530. them because they need

  531. the love of Christ,

  532. and they need to love others.

  533. And I'm reminded

  534. in so many times

  535. how without love,

  536. we are nothing.

  537. And we have got to have

  538. the balance of that.

  539. We have to have love

  540. first and foremost,

  541. and out of love

  542. flows truth

  543. that we speak

  544. to other people.

  545. And so,

  546. this is leaving

  547. the first love,

  548. the love for Christ.

  549. That devotion

  550. has got to flow

  551. from us

  552. to other people.

  553. And that's so important.

  554. And a question

  555. I want you to think about

  556. is,

  557. has my pursuit

  558. of truth

  559. or has my

  560. desire for being right

  561. overtaken

  562. my love

  563. of Jesus

  564. and his people?

  565. Ask yourself

  566. that question.

  567. It's a difficult one.

  568. I read that

  569. as I was writing this.

  570. I'm like,

  571. I don't like that question,

  572. but you got to think

  573. about it, right?

  574. And think for a moment

  575. further

  576. that Ephesus

  577. was commended

  578. for their

  579. love

  580. and truth

  581. in Ephesians.

  582. And yet,

  583. later on,

  584. it lost the love.

  585. How interesting.

  586. So,

  587. you have to

  588. constantly keep it at bay.

  589. The second one

  590. is we are cared for

  591. and we are accountable

  592. to who?

  593. To Christ, right?

  594. That Christ protects us.

  595. He walks with us

  596. in our

  597. journey in faith

  598. as well as

  599. when we think of churches,

  600. he journeys with us

  601. corporately.

  602. And it's important

  603. that just as a person

  604. can lose their way

  605. and get lost,

  606. so too

  607. can a church,

  608. at least that's what

  609. we're seeing

  610. here in Revelation.

  611. If a church

  612. loses their way

  613. and refuses

  614. to change their mind,

  615. refuses to repent,

  616. then

  617. the lampstand

  618. can be removed,

  619. meaning the loss

  620. of corporate witness.

  621. So,

  622. some people may ask,

  623. well,

  624. is the loss

  625. of a lampstand,

  626. is that loss

  627. of salvation?

  628. Well,

  629. no.

  630. It's the loss

  631. of your witness,

  632. though.

  633. There are some people

  634. that are saved,

  635. but yet they don't

  636. exhibit godly living.

  637. You may know

  638. someone like that.

  639. Someone that has been

  640. saved by grace

  641. through faith,

  642. and yet their witness

  643. is not,

  644. it's not shining brightly,

  645. as it were.

  646. And so,

  647. in the case of the church,

  648. losing that witness

  649. means the church

  650. will essentially die.

  651. And what a sad thing,

  652. especially when we look

  653. at statistics

  654. and we see about

  655. how many churches

  656. are dying.

  657. And I hate to think,

  658. is this a pattern

  659. that we have seen

  660. in churches?

  661. I think so.

  662. So,

  663. we've got to remember

  664. the truth

  665. of the word of God,

  666. but we cannot

  667. lose that love

  668. in the process.

  669. And then,

  670. the Nicolaitans,

  671. then,

  672. it seems to

  673. be some sort of

  674. infiltration

  675. or change

  676. of people

  677. within the church,

  678. whatever it is,

  679. that

  680. we do stand firm

  681. in the word of God.

  682. We don't compromise,

  683. but we also

  684. don't lose that love.

  685. The third thing,

  686. then,

  687. is,

  688. if we lose

  689. our way,

  690. remember,

  691. repent,

  692. and do

  693. the first works,

  694. which is to love.

  695. Remember

  696. that devotion

  697. you had.

  698. Just as I gave you

  699. that imagery

  700. of someone

  701. who just

  702. became a Christian

  703. and that excitement,

  704. that dedication,

  705. that enthusiasm,

  706. right?

  707. I don't know about you,

  708. but when I see

  709. a new believer,

  710. it makes me think

  711. I don't ever want

  712. to be so old

  713. that I'm no longer

  714. excited about Christ.

  715. I want to be

  716. just as enthusiastic

  717. as a new believer

  718. and I don't want

  719. to lose sight of that.

  720. And I hope for us,

  721. we don't lose sight

  722. of that either.

  723. we have got

  724. to keep that devotion.

  725. Remember the former

  726. devotion,

  727. right?

  728. When we're talking

  729. about repentance,

  730. let us change

  731. our mind.

  732. Let us change

  733. our trajectory

  734. and let us do

  735. the first works,

  736. the love that was

  737. once recognized.

  738. I want to take a moment

  739. before we go

  740. into the application.

  741. I want us to turn

  742. to Jeremiah chapter 2.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  743. It's on page 746.

  744. I want to show you

  745. something here.

  746. this ties into

  747. this idea of

  748. love and devotion,

  749. remembering that

  750. love of Christ.

  751. So Jeremiah chapter 2.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  752. And we'll go from

  753. Jeremiah 2,

  754. page 746

  755. in your ESVPU Bibles.

  756. Are we all there?

  757. All right.

  758. We're going to read

  759. those

  760. five verses.

  761. Okay?

  762. Verses 1 through 5.

  763. Let's read it together,

  764. church.

  765. The word of the Lord

  766. came to me

  767. saying,

  768. Go and proclaim

  769. in the hearing

  770. of Jerusalem,

  771. thus says the Lord.

  772. And this is important.

  773. This next one.

  774. I remember

  775. the devotion

  776. of your youth,

  777. your love

  778. as a bride,

  779. how you followed me

  780. in the wilderness,

  781. in a land not sown.

  782. Israel was holy

  783. to the Lord,

  784. the first fruits

  785. of his harvest.

  786. All who ate of it

  787. and culted guilt.

  788. Disaster came

  789. upon them,

  790. declares the Lord.

  791. Hear the word

  792. of the Lord,

  793. O house of Jacob,

  794. and all the clans

  795. of the house of Israel.

  796. Thus says the Lord.

  797. What wrong

  798. did your fathers

  799. find in me

  800. that they went

  801. far from me

  802. and went after

  803. worthlessness

  804. and became worthless?

  805. It's showing

  806. very similar imagery.

  807. The most important part

  808. is that verse 2 here,

  809. that devotion.

  810. Right?

  811. Because we think

  812. of Christ

  813. as the bridegroom

  814. and the church

  815. as the bride,

  816. very similar language

  817. in how important

  818. it is for us

  819. to keep that

  820. young devotion

  821. as it were.

  822. Right?

  823. When you think of

  824. a bride and

  825. a groom,

  826. that love

  827. and affection,

  828. that devotion,

  829. very similar

  830. how we should have

  831. love and devotion.

  832. Not in a romantic

  833. sense,

  834. but in

  835. a spiritual sense

  836. towards the Lord.

  837. So that's very,

  838. very interesting

  839. in that connection.

  840. And when you think

  841. about this,

  842. I want you to think

  843. if Jesus came

  844. to this church today,

  845. what would an audit

  846. look like?

  847. You know,

  848. I certainly hope,

  849. yes,

  850. we would be standing

  851. on the truth

  852. of the word,

  853. but I certainly hope

  854. we would be commended

  855. for our ability

  856. to love.

  857. And also,

  858. we have to think,

  859. maybe for you,

  860. you can think

  861. of that devotion.

  862. And how can you

  863. think about,

  864. take some time

  865. to think of that

  866. devotion

  867. you once had

  868. towards the Lord.

  869. And if you haven't

  870. had any devotion

  871. like that to the Lord,

  872. well,

  873. certainly,

  874. ask other people.

  875. Learn their testimony

  876. and how on fire

  877. they were

  878. and how God

  879. changed their life.

  880. And so,

  881. in this,

  882. let's go to the

  883. application then.

  884. How should we respond?

  885. What do we do

  886. about this?

  887. Well,

  888. the first is

  889. keep your first love

  890. for Jesus,

  891. right?

  892. You've got to keep

  893. devotion to Him.

  894. We love God

  895. and we love

  896. others,

  897. right?

  898. The great commandment.

  899. We keep the Word

  900. in our hearts.

  901. We keep His,

  902. we follow in the

  903. footsteps of Christ

  904. and we have that

  905. sense of awe

  906. and wonder

  907. of who Christ is

  908. and think of that

  909. imagery

  910. as we went over

  911. in Jeremiah.

  912. And let

  913. your love

  914. for Christ

  915. be shown

  916. to others

  917. in the words

  918. that you speak,

  919. in the actions

  920. that you do,

  921. just even in

  922. your very presence

  923. and visiting

  924. other people.

  925. Let that love

  926. radiate.

  927. The second thing

  928. then

  929. is

  930. from love

  931. flows

  932. truth

  933. and witness.

  934. we have to

  935. think how God

  936. loved us

  937. first

  938. and we are

  939. saved.

  940. We're saved by

  941. grace through

  942. faith.

  943. Essentially,

  944. we're saved

  945. because God

  946. loves us

  947. and we are

  948. called

  949. to love

  950. like Christ.

  951. We think of

  952. truth and witness,

  953. right?

  954. We have to speak

  955. the truth

  956. in love.

  957. We have to

  958. witness

  959. to other people.

  960. Telling the

  961. gospel story

  962. or even

  963. our own

  964. personal

  965. journey in

  966. Christ

  967. and how

  968. God has

  969. worked in

  970. our life.

  971. How God

  972. has transformed

  973. us

  974. from the

  975. inside out.

  976. We think

  977. about this.

  978. It's

  979. important for

  980. us.

  981. Let us

  982. grow in

  983. Christ

  984. and let us

  985. bear

  986. fruit.

  987. Live

  988. as an

  989. ambassador

  990. for Christ

  991. and be

  992. a messenger

  993. as it were.

  994. One who's

  995. not ashamed.

  996. It's so

  997. important for

  998. us.

  999. Yes,

  1000. by all

  1001. means,

  1002. I'm not

  1003. saying let's

  1004. not have

  1005. the truth.

  1006. I'm saying

  1007. we have

  1008. the truth.

  1009. We've also

  1010. got to have

  1011. the love.

  1012. We've got to

  1013. have both

  1014. of these

  1015. things with

  1016. us.

  1017. And so

  1018. be a

  1019. witness,

  1020. right?

  1021. Be a

  1022. witness.

  1023. Share the

  1024. good news.

  1025. Invite

  1026. someone to

  1027. church.

  1028. Maybe you

  1029. need to share

  1030. in your

  1031. testimony.

  1032. Maybe you

  1033. need to

  1034. share how

  1035. God's

  1036. moving in

  1037. your life.

  1038. And let

  1039. the things

  1040. that you

  1041. do glorify

  1042. the Father.

  1043. And

  1044. finally,

  1045. the last

  1046. one is to

  1047. guard the

  1048. lampstand

  1049. with truth

  1050. and love.

  1051. Because our

  1052. testimony,

  1053. right,

  1054. our witness

  1055. matters.

  1056. Our personal

  1057. witness,

  1058. but also our

  1059. corporate witness.

  1060. we have to

  1061. guard it and

  1062. protect it.

  1063. We have to

  1064. live in love

  1065. like Christ,

  1066. but we also,

  1067. we don't

  1068. deviate from

  1069. truth either.

  1070. We have to

  1071. keep the

  1072. truth in

  1073. us and

  1074. protect it.

  1075. It's a

  1076. reminder for

  1077. us to not

  1078. let the

  1079. world

  1080. infiltrate our

  1081. hearts or

  1082. our minds

  1083. and to not

  1084. infiltrate

  1085. our

  1086. fellowship.

  1087. Instead,

  1088. let us be

  1089. transformed by

  1090. Christ and

  1091. let us

  1092. influence our

  1093. friends,

  1094. our family,

  1095. the community,

  1096. and let us

  1097. make a

  1098. difference in

  1099. the name of

  1100. Christ.

  1101. And it's

  1102. also important,

  1103. as we found

  1104. in the

  1105. Nicolaitans,

  1106. that at

  1107. times,

  1108. people will

  1109. do things

  1110. that are

  1111. evil.

  1112. We hate

  1113. the things

  1114. that they

  1115. do.

  1116. But we

  1117. still offer

  1118. love to

  1119. our enemies.

  1120. We still

  1121. extend that,

  1122. and that's

  1123. very difficult.

  1124. Love our

  1125. enemies?

  1126. A lot of

  1127. us would

  1128. say,

  1129. I'd rather

  1130. not.

  1131. Let's be

  1132. honest here,

  1133. right?

  1134. But we

  1135. think about

  1136. that,

  1137. how Christ

  1138. was saying,

  1139. I don't

  1140. like what

  1141. they are

  1142. doing.

  1143. Even when

  1144. Christ was on

  1145. the cross

  1146. saying,

  1147. Father,

  1148. forgive them

  1149. for they

  1150. know not

  1151. what they

  1152. do.

  1153. Right?

  1154. So it's

  1155. important for

  1156. us to

  1157. love the

  1158. sinner,

  1159. hate the

  1160. sinner.

  1161. You've got

  1162. to know the

  1163. difference.

  1164. How many of

  1165. us know

  1166. they hate

  1167. both the

  1168. sin and

  1169. the sinner,

  1170. right?

  1171. Don't raise

  1172. your hand,

  1173. please.

  1174. Right?

  1175. We may know

  1176. someone like

  1177. that, and I

  1178. pray it's none

  1179. of y'all,

  1180. right?

  1181. We hate

  1182. the sin.

  1183. Love the

  1184. sinner.

  1185. We pray

  1186. for them

  1187. that they

  1188. turn from

  1189. their sin.

  1190. We pray

  1191. for them

  1192. that they

  1193. go out

  1194. of darkness

  1195. into light.

  1196. That they

  1197. get out

  1198. of the

  1199. confusion

  1200. of the

  1201. sea,

  1202. from chaos.

  1203. And you'll

  1204. find that a

  1205. lot in

  1206. Revelation,

  1207. the imagery

  1208. of the

  1209. raging sea,

  1210. and how

  1211. Christ

  1212. brings forth

  1213. still waters,

  1214. much like

  1215. how Christ

  1216. said,

  1217. peace,

  1218. be still,

  1219. bringing to

  1220. order that

  1221. which is

  1222. chaotic.

  1223. We pray

  1224. that people

  1225. will come out

  1226. of that

  1227. chaos

  1228. into the

  1229. peace of

  1230. Christ.

  1231. Christ.

  1232. And so,

  1233. let us

  1234. never forget

  1235. where we

  1236. have come

  1237. from.

  1238. Christ is

  1239. the one

  1240. who walks

  1241. among the

  1242. lampstands.

  1243. He is

  1244. with us

  1245. as churches,

  1246. and he is

  1247. with us

  1248. individually

  1249. as well.

  1250. Let us

  1251. think then

  1252. of how

  1253. can the

  1254. love and

  1255. devotion

  1256. that you

  1257. have for

  1258. Christ?

  1259. How can

  1260. that be

  1261. shown this

  1262. week,

  1263. today,

  1264. with another

  1265. person?

  1266. How can

  1267. you practice

  1268. truth,

  1269. speaking truth,

  1270. in love?

  1271. Think about

  1272. that.

  1273. And how can

  1274. we have

  1275. our lampstand

  1276. shine brightly

  1277. so that

  1278. others can

  1279. come to

  1280. Christ?

  1281. Christ.

  1282. And so,

  1283. Christ,

  1284. again,

  1285. he walks

  1286. among the

  1287. lampstands,

  1288. and he is

  1289. near to

  1290. us to

  1291. restore us.

  1292. So,

  1293. let us

  1294. love like

  1295. Christ and

  1296. keep the

  1297. truth of

  1298. God's

  1299. word in

  1300. our hearts.

  1301. Let's pray

  1302. together.

  1303. And,

  1304. Father,

  1305. we thank

  1306. you for

  1307. this section

  1308. in Revelation.

  1309. It's a heavy

  1310. one for sure,

  1311. Father.

  1312. but we

  1313. just pray

  1314. that

  1315. we may

  1316. have the

  1317. truth,

  1318. but we

  1319. may have

  1320. the love

  1321. as well.

  1322. May we

  1323. stand firm

  1324. as on

  1325. you,

  1326. our

  1327. foundation.

  1328. May we

  1329. be able to

  1330. speak truth

  1331. to others,

  1332. but may we

  1333. do it in

  1334. love.

  1335. Father,

  1336. we pray

  1337. that we

  1338. may never

  1339. lose sight

  1340. of who

  1341. you are.

  1342. may we

  1343. never

  1344. lose that

  1345. love and

  1346. that devotion

  1347. of who

  1348. you are,

  1349. what you

  1350. have done,

  1351. the love

  1352. that you

  1353. have for

  1354. us,

  1355. you sending

  1356. your Son,

  1357. Jesus Christ,

  1358. the way,

  1359. the truth,

  1360. and the

  1361. life.

  1362. May we

  1363. never forget

  1364. even in

  1365. your word

  1366. when it

  1367. says,

  1368. for you,

  1369. God,

  1370. so love

  1371. the world

  1372. that you

  1373. gave your

  1374. only Son,

  1375. that

  1376. whosoever

  1377. believes

  1378. shall not

  1379. perish,

  1380. but have

  1381. eternal

  1382. life.

  1383. All of

  1384. this comes

  1385. from you

  1386. and we

  1387. are grateful

  1388. for that.

  1389. We pray

  1390. that if

  1391. the Lord

  1392. ever came

  1393. in today

  1394. and audited

  1395. this church,

  1396. that we

  1397. may have a

  1398. good report

  1399. and if

  1400. there's

  1401. anything

  1402. that we

  1403. are not

  1404. doing,

  1405. may we

  1406. remember,

  1407. may we

  1408. repent and

  1409. do what

  1410. needs to

  1411. be done.

  1412. May we

  1413. walk humbly

  1414. before you,

  1415. following in

  1416. the footsteps

  1417. of Christ,

  1418. living and

  1419. loving like

  1420. you,

  1421. guided by

  1422. your Holy

  1423. Spirit.

  1424. It is in

  1425. the name

  1426. of Jesus

  1427. Christ that

  1428. we pray

  1429. and we

  1430. all say

  1431. together,

  1432. Amen,

  1433. church.

  1434. Amen.
